Frogs love to snuggle up in the Nepenthes pitchers but don’t worry, they don’t get eaten! They can easily climb in and out of the pitchers.

SOLARIS ; January 20th, 2024 Charleston, SC ***
HAD LIFE ALWAYS BEEN DISAPPOINTING?
I had always wondered what it would be like if I was like other teenagers my age. Would I smile without reason? Instead of looking glum and sullen? Would I have friends? I never had any before. Well, none that I could remember, anyway.
I liked to fantasize of what I wished my life would be like if Mama hadn't died.
I most often dreamed of a world without pain, suffering, and misery.
But didn't we all?
My life has ceased its meaning the moment Mama died ten years ago, at least in my Father's eyes.
I believed he only kept me around because of Mama. He loved her — more than life itself. And the moment her soul left her body and drifted to the heavens, I became a meaningless piece of property Father had to care for.
Not that he did.
I was tossed into the background and continued to exist. No love, no care, no words of comfort when I awoke during the night, sobbing, when the memories of what could have been flashed behind my eyelids.
Quite honestly, the only times my Father paid me an ounce of his attention was he got drunk and turned violent. Which was more often than I cared to admit.
And I couldn't even defend myself.
I had always been weak.
Weak minded and submissive when people — men or women — raised their voices at me.
My first thought would be to find the nearest corner and cower.
I was upset with myself about that fact.
Would I ever get stronger?
Hard pelts of water landed on my cheek and I whimpered, bruised wrists already starting to swell, weakly trying to rid myself of the zip ties encasing them. The shower turned on full blast constantly belted cold water onto my face and shivering body.
The stool underneath my bottom wobbled as I did so, and a squeak left my lips as I nearly fell forward into the cold shower wall.
This was my punishment for accidentally forgetting to cook dinner tonight.
I had been so tired from picking up the tiny minuscule pieces of glass that was embedded in the living room carpet.
I had been there for hours after Father busted it over the coffee table.
Now I was paying the price for my incompetence.
Tied to a stool in the cold bathroom waiting for Father to sober up and he remembered where he put me.
Another shiver racked up and down my spine. I was so cold. When will this end?
I sniffled, limbs trembling, and looked heavenward.
I pressed my eyes shut and mumbled a prayer under my breath. Nowadays, praying was the only thing I sought comfort in.
Loud bangs were heard outside of the bathroom door causing my heart to skip a beat. The drunken slurs leaving Father's lips made fear creep down my spine.
Mama, please just let this night end.
I wished now more than ever to be sitting on the roof above my bedroom to look up at the stars and pretend Mama was right beside me, pointing out the constellations she was so fond of.
Mama loved the stars — being named after one herself — and even loved them enough to name me after the sun she admired and the heavens she knew she would be inhabiting one day.
Far sooner than any of us expected.
The images around me blurred, pulling me into a comforting memory that dialed down my fear. The memory was my favorite.
"Your name means of the sun, Solaris." Her voice was sweet and as smooth as honey. The unconditional love and care she held within her soul shined brightly as she brushed through my hair.
"Your middle name means heavenly," I heard her voice continued. The banging within the bathroom made an unconscious jerking sensation to my shoulders, but I was pulled in far too deep into my head that I didn't care about what would happen.
"And finally, our last name." My lips pulled up into a sorrowful smile as I heard her laughter, "it means evening star or evening prayer. Pretty, isn't it?"
Mama was my hiraeth – a home that I couldn't return to unless my days on earth were no more.
My body was jerked and the zip ties cut with a clumsy slice of a knife, jerking me back to reality. A cry of pain got lodged in my throat when the knife sliced the inside of my delicate wrist and bled.
"Up." Father's slurred voice commanded as he gave a kick to the stool I was tottering on. I teetered back and forth, my aching arms flailing through the air.
Pain erupted in the back of my head once my body fell back, and I hit the back of my head against the tiled walls.
"When will you stop being so fucking clumsy, girl?" Father looked down at me with cold, reprimanding, watery eyes.
I hesitantly touched the back of my head with my arm, and the cold water continued to pelt down onto my body — making my pain numb.
"...I...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to." my teeth chattered as I forced the words out. The only thing the water didn't numb was my fear.
"You never mean to." He rolled his eyes, his dark hair sticking up in different directions as he leaned down and jerked my body up with his hold at the top of my arm.
A cry of pain left my lips as my head smacked the glass shower door when his blunt fingers pressed purposely against the gash on my wrist.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" I sobbed as I was thrown onto the floor, knees crashing against the hard marble floor. I curled into myself and pushed my soaking-wet body into the corner beside the toilet. "It was an accident."
Father only stared at me hatefully, "Shut the hell up, girl. Don't you know it doesn't do you any good to make excuses for your laziness?" He slammed his fist into the wall above my head. "Now dry yourself off and make my fucking dinner — and don't even think about getting to eat tonight after what you've done."
Throbbing erupted behind my eyelids as I pressed a tender hand to my head. I stood up on shaky feet — took a towel from the basket and dried myself off, and the tears that were rolling down my face in the process.
Sniffling, I placed a small bandaid on my wrist to stop the bleeding and stared at my scraped knees as blood beaded from the tiny cuts.
My body convulsed in shivers as I left the bathroom, freezing. Biting down on my lip, my feet padded on the floor as I took myself up to my room to take off my wet clothes.
Thumbprint bruises were already starting to form on the tops of my arms where he had grabbed me, and my injured wrists were rubbed raw, bleeding,  and had already been bruised hours ago.
"It's okay, Solaris," I whispered to myself — having no one to talk to besides myself. It brought me comfort to hear the name my mother gave me. I never heard it leave anyone's lips besides myself.
I hurriedly changed into my clothes — an old tattered dress the women next door had given me years ago, and a pair of old socks, that had more holes than I cared to admit.
It was the only other clean set of clothes I owned. Father didn't care to buy me new clothing or shoes since I never left the house and hadn't for years.
Most of the information I knew from the outside world, was from the books and magazines Father carelessly threw away. But I always managed to sneak them back to my room and hide them in my hiding place underneath my bed.
I pulled my dripping hair back in a careless bun at the nape of my neck and snuck to the kitchen — hoping to not anger Father more than he already was.
I was as quiet as a mouse as I cooked dinner, silently crying as I did so. It didn't take me as long as I expected and I was grateful for that. My fingers shook minutely while I was plating the spaghetti and garlic bread onto his plate.
"Finally," Father grunted, glaring up at me, eyes clearing and appearing more sober than before. I jumped, flinching away from him the moment he snatched the plate from my hands and set it on the table before him. He smirked at my reaction and cracked his knuckles. "Get my beer, would you?"
I jerkily nodded and flew away from his figure to grab an unopened bottle of Modelo and cracked it open with the bottle opener hanging on a magnetic hook on the fridge.
I shifted in place, picking at the cracked skin on my lips, and waited for him to dismiss me for the day.
I shivered, running my hands up and down my arms to gain warmth. I knew better than to leave without him telling me to.
The last time I did it, two years ago, I was locked outside of the hours, in the middle of the night, during the worst cold spells Charleston had ever experienced. I distinctly remember wearing this dress and no socks.
I felt myself sniffling and made myself stay quiet. I knew I was going to have a cold after being under the cold water for hours – every time this happened, I always ended up getting sick a day or two afterward.
Father slurped down the noodles and leveled me with a stare as I stood by his side, feeling my limbs turn to ice. "I expect you to have this house spotless by the time I get back tomorrow. The guys at the company are coming over to finish up a project."
I licked at my dry lips.
I don't like it when they come over. Why do they always have to come here?
"...w-why are t-they coming here, Father?" I asked meekly, immediately regretting it when my head shot up and looked at me warningly.
"Why else? We got to get that stupid fucking PowerPoint ready for the meeting before Chairman Jeon comes back from his trip."
The blood drained from my face and my blood ran cold. author's note ; ✨

Flask-Shaped Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes ampullaria)
Family: Typical Pitcher Plant Family (Nepenthaceae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
Most species of pitcher plants are carnivorous, using jug-like, fluid-filled traps that protrude from their leaves to capture small animals and digest their bodies, absorbing the nutrients released (particularly nitrogen, which is needed to produce chlorophyll and which is scarce in the soil around them due to intense competition with other plants) across the trap's inner walls. The Flask-Shaped Pitcher Plant, however, is unusual among its relatives in that it is seemingly essentially a herbivorous plant - found in damp, dense forests, it grows as a woody vine that creeps along the ground or through the lower branches of larger plants and uses its unusually short, wide pitchers to catch leaves that fall down from the trees above it, digesting them to make use of the nitrogen and other nutrients they contain. Widely distributed across much of Brunai, Indonesia, New Guinea, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore and reportedly quite common in damp, humid environments throughout their range, members of this species are dioecious (meaning that each individual plant is either "male", producing pollen-producing flowers, or "female", producing pollen-receiving flowers that develop into seeds once pollinated,) and produce dense clusters of small, petal-less flowers relatively high in their "branches", typically far from their traps to avoid accidentally trapping pollinators. Once pollination has occurred, "female" flowers produce numerous tiny, lightweight, hair-like seeds which are carried away from their "mother" on the wind.

Part one
The genus Nepenthes (pitcher plants) is named for “Nepenthe” which literally means “without grief”. In Greek mythology (the odyssey) it is a potion that wipes away grief/sorrows by making you forget. Named by Carl Linnaeus, he wrote that even if it wasn’t the true greek Nepenthes, it would be for any botanist. He loved them so much and was convinced any botanist would love them too which is cute.
The pitchers are modified leaves and grow as closed bud and sterile until the top opens with the liquid ready to go, the leaf lid (operculum) keeps rainwater from diluting the liquid inside, which can have a pH as low as 2 and has other enzymes to help it dissolve stuff. (Wiki)
I know what your next burning question is: can you drink them?
Luckily other more unhinged botanists and enthusiasts have dedicated a page on their forum with a few describing it. There’s a nat geo article with the author in a picture drinking from one so there’s 1 survivor. One person said they drank (unopened so no bugs) N. ventricosa that tasted like water or wheat-grass. Some others mentioned neat scotch. On a linked thread someone mentioned just handling the plants and the liquid made their hands red and inflamed. I would say the species matters.
Mobile is bugging with links: cpukforum.com, ‘Drinking Nepenthes Pitcher Fluid’ thread

Note
how do pitcher plants catch rats? can't they just gnaw through?
They probably could physically gnaw through the plant if they thought to, but a drowning rat is not the best at problem solving and the plant anatomy works against them. The inside of the pitcher is very slippery and it would be pretty tough get the grip needed to start chewing. When a rat/shrew/small mammal slips into a a large pitcher plant (such as Nepenthes rajah) they can very quickly drown in the nearly two liters of fluid and digestive enzymes within the plant.
Should be noted that mammals are incidental prey for carnivorous plants, as even the enormous specimens really prefer their invertebrates for lunch. Some scientists have speculated that the rodents ingested by pitcher plants must be sick or compromised in some way to succumb to the trap, but this remains conjecture.

Maybe some good news despite everything else,
First functional subterranean nepenthes pitchers found!!
BRUH NEW CARNIVOROUS PLANT DROPPED
im not gonna lie i went into that article expecting brand new specialized traps like utricularia but from the looks of it they really just took their regular traps and stared stuffing that shit under leaf litter, soil, little gaps that tree roots made, under moss tufts, etc and it worked. no time for new traps just take the normal ones and put them under other things instead of on top of things or in the air. this seems so obvious and intuitive and i love that i wasnt expecting it, like im willing to bet this isnt the only nepenthes pitcher plant that does this.
(ill need to read more about this when i get home from work!!! thanks so much!!)

SOLARIS January 20th, 2024 Charleston, SC
THE NAME SENT TREMBLES OF FEAR DOWN MY SPINE.
"Chairman Jeon?" my words cut off in a whimper at the reminder of the man everyone was frightened of. It was no secret to everyone how influential Chairman or Mister Jeon was and how much power he held by being the Chairman and owner of most of the multi-billion dollar companies in the United States and South Korea; the country he was originally from.
He even owned a Gentlemen's club here, called Ataraxia, in Charleston that Father visits more often than he ought — when the Chairman allows other people in the private club one another month.
I bit down on my lip as more thoughts raced through my brain.
Chairman Jeon wasn't a man even the most courageous of people wanted to cross, and those who did were either found dead...or just disappeared into thin air. He was the kind of man parents threatened their children with when they wanted them to behave. He was the same man Father threatened me with when I wouldn't stop crying after Mama died. Chairman Jeon was the most powerful sort of man Charleston had ever seen. It was also rumored that he had strong ties to the Mafia.
A cold chill passed through me at the thought.
Most of the people who lived here were grateful he barely made appearances, since ninety-five percent of the population of Charleston worked for him.
It had been months since Chairman Jeon had been here – I reckoned he spent most of his time in Korea, where his permanent residence was.
"Go to your room, girl, and remember –" he cut himself off to glare heatedly at me, "this house had better be spotless. I won't have my friends visit a pig stye."
I jerkily nodded and without wasting a moment, I raced away from him and shot to my bedroom. The first thing I did was wrap myself in my blanket and huddle in the corner – it was something I did when I wanted to think clearly.
Picking at the skin on my lip, I hesitantly glanced out the window and sighed. This would be a nerve-wracking week.
A stuffed purple bunny sat on the edge of my bed – a stuffed animal five-year-old me lovingly named; Mr. Carrots – caused me to smile. I shivered slightly underneath my blanket, thanking god I was finally warming up – and snatched the bunny from my bed and snuggled close to its neck.
Mr. Carrots had been with me the majority of my life and he was one of the only pieces of Mama I had left.
He brought me peace and comfort when Mama couldn't. I was anxious for what the next few days would bring but I didn't have any other choice but to just let them play out the way God intended.
*** SOLARIS January 21st, 2024 Charleston, SC
THE NEXT DAY WAS MUCH BRIGHTER THAN THE LAST.
Father had left before I woke up, sniffling with the first signs of a cold. I wrapped myself in one of Father's old sweaters to keep myself warm.
Wrapping my arms around my tummy with a flinch, I knew I better pay attention when it came time for Father to come home. The last thing I needed was for him to catch me wearing his old clothes to keep me warm.
The only thing I had to do before I started taking overthink down and cleaning was to place a new bandaid on the gash on my wrist.
Doing that, quickly, stomach grumbling in hunger, I entered the kitchen with a longing glance out of the tiny window above the kitchen sink.
I had lost count of how many years it had been since I was allowed to go outside the house and explore. I reckoned it had been years. I hardly remembered what kind of places were outside but I did remember how much I loved walking through the woods with Mama, collecting pretty leaves and tiny pincones. I smiled and started to twist the ends of my hip-length hair. I still had those leaves tucked inside the old pages of one of my old storybooks that Mama used to read to me. The little pinecones were stashed inside my little trinket box, along with the little acorns – we only found those when we were lucky.
I carefully grabbed a knife from the drawer, and cut a small apple in half, and nibbled on it as I pulled long hair out of my face with a ribbon and prepared to start cleaning.
I hummed happily under my breath as I picked up the glass, scrapped knees aching but I paid it no mind.
Hours passed by in a blur and I thankfully got the entire house cleaned and dinner and snacks already presented on the table before I declared myself done.
A grin beamed across my lips as I trotted to my bedroom and closed the door behind me. My bare feet padded on the carpet as I neared the small window a foot from the floor and knelt in front of it. My hands cupped my jawline, eyes watching the sun set with a heavy heart. Tears pricked my eyes and I closed them and clasped my hands together in front of my heart and began to speak.
"Dear heavenly Father," I started off, eyes closed and head tilted towards the sky, "I thank for letting me wake up and experience another day on this earth. I thank you for keeping me safe today, and being by my side when no one else is. I ask that you please watch over Mama and let her know that I love her and can't wait to be reunited with her one day." a lone tear dripped down my cheek, "Please, dear Lord, bless me and keep me safe and continue to hold me within your arms. I know that you have a plan for me," I continued, knees shifting.
"God always has a plan, my little Solaris." Mama's voice rang inside my head. "No matter how rough life gets at times, just know that God will always be there for you and after those hard times are over...the rewards are immense and glorious."
"But please, I just want to not be afraid anymore." I sniffled, "I want the pain to stop." the tear slid down my head and dripped onto my clasped hands. "I thank you for hearing my prayer and I hope you'll answer me soon." a small smile crept upon my lips. "I guess that's all for now – oh! And could you please keep me safe tonight and when Chairman Jeon comes back, please? I'm sorry to ask so much of you, but you're the only one besides Mama that loves me and I know that you hear me when I pray...um, Thank you again! In Jesus' name I pray, Amen."
My soul lightened and my heart rate relaxed and then sped up when the noises of the front door opening. A little gasp escaped my lips and I smothered.
Don't be seen or heard, Solaris.
The voices of Father's terrifying friends had me balking in place, arms wrapping around myself to ground my trembling.
With shaky fingers, I peeled Father's sweater off my body and stuffed it underneath my bed — I'd have to sneak inside his room and put it back when he left.
I sat in the corner of my bedroom, knees pulled to my chest, and listened closely to what was happening in the living room.
The house was old and nearly falling apart, which meant the walls were thin. Pressing an ear to the wall, my eyes fluttered closed to focus. But I didn't have to listen long.
"Girl!"
Father's boom made me stand at full attention. I held my hands together to shield the shakiness from them and scurried from the room.
Soon enough, I was standing in front of Father and his friends. Two older men who gave me the creeps.
James and Stevie.
They eyed me like I was a piece of meat when they plopped down on the sofa and stroked along their bulging beer bellies.
My lips trembled, remembering their slimy touches along my legs and biceps the last time they came here.
"Get us beer."
I stood ramrod straight and nodded.
I left the living room without another word and withdrew three bottles of Modelo and opened them. Shockingly being able to juggle them in my arms, I hunched my shoulders and walked slowly back to the living room — heart thundering inside my chest.
When I returned, Father was gone and only James and Stevie were there. Their eyes latched onto me in a second and they exchanged looks.
My eyes glossed over when Stevie ran a hand through his greasy hair and mustache while licking his nearly invisible lips.
"W-Where's Father?" I asked, even hearing the unaltered fear in my croaking voice. I took hesitant steps near them and slowly handed them the beers in my hand.
It was James who answered.
"Bathroom, sweetcheeks."
I only nodded in return, internally cringing at the terrible name.
Slowly sighing in relief, I turned and placed Father's Modelo on the coffee table and stilled when I felt a hand land on my lower back.
Disgust welled in my gut as another hand landed on the exposed skin on the back of my knee and caressed my skin.
"Don't." I stiffened, terror locking my limbs. "Please." I shook my head, turning to face the men. Their faces were held in a lecherous glare as their unfocused eyes glazed over.
Stevie's hand tightened around my knee and tugged as James' hand fell from my lower back.
"Why don' you take a seat?" James asked, fingering a yellow patch on his skin, running a hand on his swollen face — probably due to high cholesterol.
"No thank you." I shook my head and mentally begged Father to come back. I felt black spots dance across my vision in a slow, swift motion.
I felt so faint.
Their touches on my body made me feel disgusted. Dirty.
Even though I hated showers because of my experience with them, all I wanted to do in this moment was go under the scalding spray and wash my skin raw in hopes I'd never remember the feeling of their hands on me. I was so scared.
"I'm tired." I tried to refuse, tugging myself further away from them.
Stevie's eyes sharpened at my blatant disregard of his desires and he locked his limbs, preparing to jump up from his seat.
A tear left my eye in relief as Father stomped into the room, loudly complaining of the PowerPoint slide they had to finish before Chairman Jeon came back.
Tomorrow.
"I swear," Father grunted, plopping down in his recliner and snatching the beer from the table. "Every time that damned man comes back — everyone freaks out."
I slowly started in his direction, body positioning behind his chair. I felt my body relax the tiniest bit being away from those two men.
Stevie took a glance at me before looking at Father, "No shit." He agreed with an eye roll.
"I just don't know what Chairman Jeon just don't stay the fuck in Korea. Where he and that gang of his belongs."
My head was hung towards the ground as I listened closely to them bashing the Chairman. Speaking of how he basically took over Charleston with little to no work.
I didn't know how much of that was true — but I also thought they were just jealous of his success. I was scared of the Chairman, but I can also give credit when credit is due.
"Go to your room, girl, and leave us." Father ordered without looking at me.
I stood at attention and jerkily nodded.
I scurried to my bedroom and locked the door behind me.
In just a few moments, I allowed myself to fall down onto the floor and claw at my skin in hopes that I would scratch away the memories.
Would tomorrow be a better day?
I prayed that it would be.
