Today I transplanted seedlings in horticulture class, ate lunch, got help with essay for english class, went to DND club meeting where club officers talked about character creation, went to art club where people were talking about drawing college mascot for a logo, watched teacher give demo on making clay on the wheel in ceramics, did some practice on the wheel, and cleaned up a bit before leaving.
Also I got compliments on my amazing eyeshadow and one person in art club recognized my mini nepeta plushie

Evening Gardeners,
Now is the time to start your garden plans for the Maritime Northwest climate. Getting a jump on your season can save you a headache or two once the physical planting time comes.
LENGTHY POST AHEAD
GENERAL INFORMATION
Check your garden soil. Preform a pH test and amend your soil if necessary. If you are planning on a diverse pH planting, make sure your planting area and it’s medium is set for the specific vegetation. Ex, blueberries will require a more acidic pH medium than leafy vegetables.
Weed your garden. Seriously. Start weeding now, your produce seedlings will thank you. The less they have to compete with at a young age, the stronger plant you will have.
Turn your soil. Especially the areas that got hit by the 2021 February snowstorm. Turn your soil after weeding your garden. If you need to amend your soil, this is a good time to do it as you will be mixing your amendments throughout your entire growing area.
Start your warm season seeds indoors. If growing potatoes or fava beans, have their growing plot ready to go by March. Sprout your potatoes a week or so prior to planting. If you need to divide a large seed potato, make your cuts are done 2 days minimum prior to planting to reduce the risk of rot. Fava bean (seeds or starts) can go directly into the ground the first week of March as they are cold hardy and can tolerate light frost.
Start pest prevention early. For slugs use copper tapes and salts to deter them from your seedlings. Use cabbage collars on your cabbage seedlings to prevent cabbage root flies from getting at the stems. Net your seedlings in advance for prevent loss to birds. Use floating row covers while seedlings are young to prevent pest damage and to keep some extra warmth. Don’t forget to remove covers as the weather warms up so benifical pollinators can reach your garden.
Check your garden tools are sharp, oiled, and ready for the growing season.
FOR CANNERS ONLY: If you plan on canning your harvest this year, stock up on a case or two of your preferred canning jars. Once canning season is in full swing, items such as lids, rings, jars, pectin, etc. can be difficult to find.
Try something new. Save a small patch of space in your garden to test out a single planting of a crop you have always wanted to grow! If it performs well, you can add it to next year’s plans. If it doesn’t meet you expectations, you didn’t put a large amount of cost into growing the crop and can try something else next year.
SEED COMPANIES
Below is a list of seed companies I trust and use in my garden. My personal favorite are highlighted in green:
Seed Savers Exchange
Territorial Seed Company
Seattle Seed Company
Heritage Harvest Seed
Seeds of Change
Victory Seed Company
MIGardener
Ed Hume Seeds
GENERAL GARDEN FAQ

Winter sowing (for Aimée)
Winter sowing is so easy, you basically just sow it outside and leave it there. How easy is that? Some videos MIgardener (I guess that means he's in Michigan?) Susan is using milkjugs
I usually sowed perennials this way but since this is for Aimée I'll namedrop herbs and medical plants. SOME ARE POISIONOUS.
Seeds to try this fall/winter: Yarrow achillea filipendulina Coneflower echinacea purpurea Lavender lavendula Mint mentha Beebalm monarda didyma Catnip nepeta (true catnip is n. cataria) Poppies papaver Sage salvia Feverfew tanacetum parthenium Tancy tanacetum vulgare Thyme thymus Valerian valeriana officinalis Blue Vervain verbena hastata
Tumblr media
Borrowed this picture, make sure to drill holes in the top and the bottom. No dogs or cats will get into these, they won't blow over in a storm. Place the boxes somewhere light and just wait for spring, you might want to ventilate more in the spring but the boxes will work as a mini greenhouse and give the seedlings a great start.

Windowsill of Curiosities: Pt.1
So, as I previously posted, I have decided to try my hand and building on my recently re-discovered green thumb and try and grow a variety of easy and extremely hard plants in completely unsuitable conditions (but the best I have available) and see where it gets me.
Tumblr media
I do wish to keep this up and do my best, so I will be using my tumblr to journal, as well as a special little notebook, I made to take notes.
It is small, but over my years of journaling and scrapbooking, I have made a habit of sticking in pages with tape and writing on the back of fold out pictures, so it should be enough to keep me going. Also, it looks pretty and gives me a chance to give some attention to my love of botanical drawing, so that is a plus and a double plus.
Tumblr media
The list of planted plants, as it currently is, is as follows:
The main troupe:
Belladonna (Atropa belladonna) - in stratification for 10h+24h
Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) - planted
Monkshood (Aconitum napellus) - in stratification for 6w
White sage (Salvia apiana) - planted
Sandalwood (Santalum album)  - planted
+ Mimosa pudica as host - TBP - to be planted
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) - planted
Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) - planted
Datura metel  - planted
Datura innoxia - planted Apr2019
Tobacco (Nicotiana tobaccum) - planted
Mastix (Pistacia lentiscus) - planted
Angelica (archangelica) - in stratification for 30d
The UwU factor:
Catnip (Nepeta faassenii) - planted
Chamomile (Marticaria recutita) - planted
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) - planted
I am also waiting for seeds of:
Angel’s Trumpet (Brugmansia arborea)
Angel’s Trumpet (Brugmansia suaveolens)
Datura stramonium
Pink Pepper ( Schinus molle)
Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Tumblr media
I have planted everything in peat planters, until (if) the plants sprout. Unlike my last completely unprofessional seed sprouting attempts, these are a definite upgrade, as they can be planted directly into the final pots, without disturbing the seedlings.
Tumblr media
I marked everything with name, date of sowing and expected time of germination, if known, so that I have a reference about when an attempt was or was not successful.
All the little planters are in a small plastic glasshouse with ventilation if needed.
I plan on making notes in my little book and posting pic updates here, not only to share but also to document any progress / or failure.
I think growing plants frequently used in practice could be a good option for those of us, who are urban and city locked and foraging for them is not an option.
Also, I hope to everything that is holy and powerful, that the experiment with sandaltree works, because I want to feel cool.
Reading for later references (will be updated sporadically):

And lastly, looking for seeds of salvia divinorum, for a friend. Of course.

PREPARING FOR THE LONG HOT SUMMER AHEAD
(The following only for devoted gardeners) Now is the busy time of the year garden wise. All the abundant spring growth that is now spent in the various beds around the house has to be removed so that the plants can ready themselves for the long hot summer ahead.
I have already started this overhaul in the long garden. The freestanding roses have been trimmed back and fed with Sudden Impact for Roes and I am in the middle of cutting back the large ‘Fantin-Latour’ fence roses. The salvias, scabiosa and dianthus along the front of the border have been trimmed to encourage more growth and fed with the seaweed concentrate Maxi-crop. I have been pinching back the asters and phlox since spring to encourage bushier and lower growth so I don’t have to stake them. I am removing some of the tall lychnis to make room for the new zinnia seedlings. The perennial foxgloves are nearly spent but I am keeping their presence going as long as I can. The same applies to the various cranesbills. The Hidcote lavender is now out at the end of the long garden and the white Christmas lilies are in bud. The various thistles (eryngium and echinops) are starting to rise and the dahlia is flourishing. The Annabel hydrangea is in bud in the corner under the standard wisteria. The delphinium spires are finished so they will be cut to the ground and fed so new stems come later.
I am also working on the front garden. There are tiny delightful little lizards there that bask in the sun and dart away when disturbed. Yesterday I completed one side, deadheading ‘Du Maitre...’, the pansies and the ‘Purrsian Blue’ nepeta. The potted Lisbon lemons are recovered from their winter overhaul and are now producing healthy green foliage and baby lemons. When cutting back is finished, I need to enhance the soil with some blood and bone as most of the zinnias will be going there, as they love the hot sun. The amazing low salvia ‘Blue Lightning’, which is well established there, will also have a trim. All the ‘deceased’ bulb foliage has been removed. The new tripod rose refuses to move but it is still green and alive, while the clematis ‘Rooguchi’, planted close by, might be the problem but I can't move it now.
The side garden is looking quite good at present. The pale blue agapanthus are starting to bloom and they look pretty near to the lime green bracts of euphorbia. The blue Chinese Forget-me-not is still in flower, as is the very large Rosa ‘Mutabilis’. The foliage bed against the house is full of new growth and very pleasing to look at. The poor sedums that were literally blown away by the wind, the pieces retrieved from the footpath and put in pots, are now rooted and back in place but the lovely perfection of the original round forms has been marred. In time I will not notice this. The potted tall standard cumquat is not happy as I let some self seeding annuals stay there but they have robbed the tree of too many nutrients. Yesterday I soaked the plant, gave it new potting soil, and in a few days, I will give it some seaweed and perhaps some epsom salts to remedy the yellow foliage.
The driveway garden is going well, with regular watering and feeding. The eight sasanqua camellias are doing very well, the heucheras are excelling there while the experimental annuals - white New Guinea impatiens - are struggling. When the warmer weather is more constant, they should do better provided they are not burnt from the sun which is likely. We will see.

Blossom Arrangement Ideas
Numerous individuals basically abandon it past the point of no return in the year to begin planting seeds and end up paying out unmistakably more money for seedlings or develop plants. On the off chance that you have an excessive number of seedlings to plant out in your greenhouse this...try offering them instead...please let me clarify.
Tumblr media
All you need is some quality preparing fertilizer and a pack of old yogurt pots with gaps made in the base. At that point fill the pots with the manure and essentially exchange your extra seedlings into them. Develop them for around 2 additional weeks in the http://www.bestflowersonline.co.uk/sympathy-flowers-uk/ pots until they achieved a decent size. At that point you can offer them at chapel fairs, yard sales...you get the thought and profit, and the seedlings don't go to squander. Another incredible bloom game plan thought, and making an additional piece of money, is to sell hanging crates, particularly on the off chance that you have an eye for structure or blossom organizing. Right off the bat, use peat or peat-based manure since this will make taking care of the bins less demanding and more secure.
At that point begin by planting around the base of the bushel by utilizing lobelia, nepeta or antirrhinums, these are incredible plants for this. Use around 6 plants around the bin. Next, plant the best by utilizing well known plants like ivy leaf geraniums, helichrysum silver or gold leaf, petunias and so forth. At that point after all that you can sell your finished crates for anything from $24 to $32 each at spots like yard deals and so forth. This will be around half to 100% more than what they really cost you to make the bins. In the event that you have a lot of eagerness and inventive planting thoughts, at that point you could transform this into another business adventure. You can promote your administrations by setting sees in nearby newsagents and patio nursery focuses.

These Herbs Will Relieve Your Anxiety In No-Time
POSTED 4 HOURS AGO BY STACY FILTON IN ALL ARTICLES, BACKYARD PLANTS, HOUSEHOLD REMEDIES  0
Are you feeling anxious? If so, you’re not alone by any means. Anxiety is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders in the United States, affecting 40 million adults over the age of 18.
Mental illness is often misunderstood and can carry a stigma that inhibits people from seeking treatment and support. It can be a debilitating condition that can manifest into more severe forms of mental illness and out-of-character behaviors.
Understanding Anxiety
Anxiety is the fastest growing mental illness in America, with 18% of Americans experiencing an anxiety disorder.
It’s a general feeling of worry and unease that can range from mild to severe.
Common symptoms are difficulty sleeping, headaches, muscle tension and pain, irritability, and poor concentration.
Anxiety disorders can significantly impact your life – from social interactions to your ability to function at work or school.
Keep reading on to find out more about these herbs to help relieve your anxiety.
The Best Herbs To Relieve Anxiety
Anxiety is often thought to be a primarily psychological disorder. Still, it can also be rooted in an imbalance of the body’s natural chemistry.
The spring herbs listed below can help relieve anxiety by targeting these imbalances and restoring normal balance to your system.
Chamomile
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is a late-spring flowering plant belonging to the daisy family.
The name comes from Greek chamaimelon, meaning “earth apple,” and may refer to the plant’s scent.
Chamomile has been widely used as a natural herbal remedy since ancient times, with records of its use in Egyptian purification rites and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
It’s often used to help with anxiety and insomnia because the herb contains volatile oils that act as natural muscle relaxants.
It might also be beneficial for those with fragile stomachs or colitis exacerbated by anxiety disorders because it has an anti-inflammatory effect on the digestive tract.
Chamomile Tea
Quite simply the simplest tea to make to calm anxiety.
Take a chamomile tea bag or just the flowers and put them in your cup of hot, but not boiling water for around 5 to 10 minutes, then you can drink it.
Lemon Balm
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a sweet-smelling herb that has been used for medicinal purposes throughout history.
It can be taken in tea form, rubbed on the skin, or even inhaled.
The plant contains the terpenoids citronellal and citral, both calming and sedative. The leaves of this herb also contain flavonoids that act as anti-inflammatories.
Lemon balm is also an antioxidant with antibacterial properties.
Research suggests that taking lemon balm extract provides relief from stress-induced anxiety among people who find themselves in high-pressured environments.
Lemon Balm Tea
These are the ingredients:
1 tablespoon dry lemon balm leaves (or two tablespoons fresh leaves)
10 ounces boiling water.
Honey or agave as optional sweeteners for your drink.
For a standard-sized teacup, fill a tea strainer or ball with lemon balm and allow to steep in hot water for 5-10 minutes before removing the tea strainer and adding the desired sweeteners if you choose so.
Lemon balm is an excellent medicinal herb for reducing anxiety and insomnia, especially when used in a concentrated tincture form, like the one found in the Apothecary.
Catnip
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) gives cats a feeling of euphoria, but in humans, it reduces tension and soothes frazzled nerves.
The leaves from the plant are often used as a sleep aid, though they primarily act to change one’s mood rather than sedate them.
Catnip grows as short-lived perennial plants in gardens; mature plants typically shed seeds that give rise to volunteer seedlings in subsequent years.
Established catnip can be grown during springtime by cutting back the plant halfway- this will quickly regrow and start blooming with large amounts of leaves ready for drying in late springtime.
Catnip Tincture
You can either use catnip as a herb for tea or a tincture.
A suggested dose for adults is 30-40 drops of the tincture 3x/day.
If you prefer to make an alcohol-free tincture version, that’s fine too!
Tulsi Basil
Tulsi basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is native to India and sacred to Hindus.
It’s also called holy basil, and it has a wide range of healing benefits in Ayurvedic medicine.
Tulsi basic offers relief from the impacts of stress on the body, which research studies have proven again and again; furthermore, its value for anxiety management as well as depression was confirmed by several scientific studies too.
A delightful herb with a citrusy bouquet that can be slightly musky when dried, tulsi perfumes any kitchen when added to boiling water or tea- what a fantastic addition!
Drying Tulsi Basil For Infusions
Gather small bunches of the flower spikes together at their base with string or twine.
Hang them up in a warm, dark, and dry place such as a garage or a dry store cupboard.
Lavender
Lavender (Lavandula) is well known for its amazing ability to create a calm atmosphere.
In fact, one of the main benefits of lavender is that it can take away your stress without making you too tired or setting you to sleep.
More than just generating a peaceful state in your mind, lavender can also reduce anxiety by influencing the fight or flight response.
Lavender, in an essential oil format, has been found to be effective in reducing anxiety through some studies conducted, as well as having a positive effect on things such as:
Reducing restlessness
Promoting sleep
Relieving nervousness and agitation
Alleviating depressive symptoms
Lavender Oil
Lavender oil is created by steeping dry lavender flowers in a carrier oil for one week to several weeks.
As the dry flowers infuse with the oils, natural essential oils from lavender are drawn out and into your chosen carrier oil.
Popular choices for carriers include extra virgin olive oil, jojoba seed extract, or sweet almond extract, among many more.
Peppermint
Peppermint is a plant from the Lamiaceae family.
It’s often used in herbal teas to provide relief from gas and indigestion and calm mild stomach aches and bloating.
However, it also has anxiety-reducing effects that are similar to certain types of medication.
As a plant extract, peppermint oil is a natural remedy.
It’s been shown to reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety; the ester menthone in the oil makes it more effective than other plants.
In this way, when you inhale the scent of peppermint or ingest it as an extract, it can work to calm your central nervous system and help alleviate your anxiety-related symptoms.
Peppermint Tincture
Fill a clean glass jar with fresh peppermint leaves and pour in 80-proof vodka or glycerin if you dont want to consume alcohol.
Wrap the mouth of the jar with wax paper or plastic wrap and close tightly, then shake vigorously.
Keep it in the dark for four to six weeks, shaking daily.
Strain out plant matter after steeping time is up (your liquid will be green).
Label your bottle clearly with the contents and date; this stuff can last years if stored properly!
You can add 10% glycerin to make it more drinkable,
Valerian
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has been generally considered safe at recommended doses, but since long-term safety trials are lacking, use it for only a short period (up to two weeks) unless your doctor approves otherwise.
It may cause some adverse side effects such as headaches, dizziness, and drowsiness in some cases.
Valerian root can be taken by swallowing it as a capsule, drinking it in tea, or tablets.
Ideally, valerian should be taken half an hour to two hours before bedtime.
Valerian Leaf Tea
Add one heaped tablespoon of your desired herb to boiling water in a teapot or infuser ball to make a delicious bedtime tea.
Allow the herbs to steep in the hot water for five minutes before discarding the herbs.
Sweeten it with honey or another vegan alternative and enjoy 30 minutes before bedtime!
You’re not alone if you have anxiety; it’s one of the most common mental health disorders.
Anxiety can be a debilitating condition, and some suffer from more severe forms that manifest into inexplicable behaviors.
You don’t have to live with anxiety alone!
While some prefer going down a pharmaceutical route for treatment, others head down an alternative path using natural remedies such as spring herbs which may help relieve your symptoms and prevent future episodes of unease when they strike again.
These herbs can be prepared in so many ways, from teas to tinctures or simply just adding a little to your meals, so whichever way you choose to take them, make sure they are the best for you and you do your research to be safe!

Wondering
A touch of spring has arrived and despite a regular light night time frost, the days have been noticeably warmer and the new shoots are clearly visible. Plants and trees everywhere are showing those exciting pin pricks of green - I always think this is especially beautiful on dogwood and willow.  The birds are really starting to kick off now, with the new season’s male blackbirds taking up their positions at dawn and dusk.  The pied wagtail has returned - no doubt to nest as usual under the solar panels on the garage roof!
The skylarks over two or three fields surrounding Brisley Common are providing the most phenomenal cheer at a time when the world has yet again been propelled into chaos.  When I walk the lanes and tracks with the girls I cant help wondering about the birds and wildlife in Ukraine - many urban birds displaced by terrible human actions and animals, many of them domesticated, frightened and probably now homeless and even ownerless.  Yet to hear the skylarks and see them soar up into a blue Norfolk sky, still gives one hope that despite all our terrible doings, the natural world still finds a way to survive.
Despite all the worry, succour can be found working the land - despite the sadness of losing Dan temporarily, with the wonderful help that has come to the rescue, the garden is looking absolutely fabulous.  His absence has spurred me on to do more myself and I have found myself doing little jobs that I have been looking at for a couple of years or more!  Jane and I re did the little troughs for alpines on Wednesday with some new saxifrages and Lithodora.  Simon pollarded the Salix alba Britzensis around the pond so now I have the fresh withies to make good the sweet pea wigwams.  The removal of the dear old topiary box snail in February meant that an old broken terracotta pot which the snail sort of curled around has been removed and this leaves a nice gap for a soon to arrive Libertia grandiflora.  We still have the dogwoods along the pond and ditch banks to prune hard and this year we must take some cuttings.
Jane and I also split up and potted up several items for a Plant Stall in May - masses of Geranium phaeum Samobor which always sells well, Nepeta Walkers Low which needed reducing - another job I had been putting off - Hemerocallis Bella Lugosi, Asters unknown but pretty and next week we shall turn our attention to potting up 3 different species of Brunnera, several young Helleborus and another Hemerocallis Stoke Poges.   I am happy to leave her in charge of taking cuttings of the scented pelargoniums as well - also good sellers.
About to sow some beetroot and chard in plugs, broad beans now in the cold frames and the garlic and shallots are now showing the first green shoot.  I have 30 Lavandula Silver Sands waiting to be planted around the bed outside the greenhouse where again all the box was removed in February.  I have ordered some extra pea shingle to sweep back underneath them which will hide the unsightly black membrane - another thing I had been meaning to do - get some more of that for one or two bare patches!  The potatoes are sitting on the spare room windowsill and I think can go in next week.  Cosmos seedlings are showing and the sweet peas looking good enough to go into the cold frame as soon as the lavender is out.
Poor Bertha is still suffering from a badly cut front pad so a lot of Vetwrap, clingfilm and natty sock systems are in play - it is always such a nuisance but we are now on the way to recovery and I hope by the end of next week she will be fully repaired.  The others are feeling bored as the walks are short and carefully selected to avoid too much wet or spiky terrain such as stubble!
I have started to do some drawing and painting again - it is soothing in times of trouble and stops one endlessly looking at news items.

Brian Minter: Try a few of these plants in your perennial areas to extend the colour in your garden
Tumblr media
When folks who are relatively new to the world of gardening ask for help with selecting perennials, I always encourage them to try not only tough, resilient varieties, but also ones that have a long blooming period.
I then introduce them to the rudbeckia family, particularly to R. ‘Goldsturm’, the standard of excellence against which all other rudbeckias are judged. If space is an issue, I suggest the more compact R. ‘Little Goldstar’, which produces masses of tiny gold flowers centred with black-seed cones. It blooms from late June through September.
Next, I take them to the perennial geranium section where the star performer is the beautiful G. ‘Rozanne’. This somewhat spreading variety pumps out its magnificent blue colour from early July right into October.
My next stop is the coreopsis display where the well-known C. ‘Zagreb’ hangs out. It’s one of the oldest, most reliable performers. We’ve enjoyed its compact, spiky foliage and golden flowers in our garden from June well into October.
Then it’s off to visit the yarrows where the newer ‘Vintage’ series resides. Available in four colours (red, rose, violet and white), these basal branching, compact plants re-bloom throughout the summer.
Many other perennials have extended blooming periods, but to me, these varieties are proven icons that provide easy colour all summer and into the fall. This year, however, I may be adding some new members to my ‘long-bloomers’ list.
When I used to frequent gardens, garden centres and growers in Europe, I discovered some gems — one of them was the Whiteman Company in The Netherlands, who rebranded as Darwin Perennials. A leader in the introduction of new perennials, their varieties have added much depth to this plant category. Every year they came up with some real jewels, many of which are still favourites today.
To my surprise, Whiteman was later purchased by the Ball Horticultural Company, one of the world’s largest horticulture firms, and it continues to operate as Darwin Perennials. We’ve had a long association with Ball and a deep appreciation of how they care for and work with growers around the world. Their innovative ideas, sharing of information and encouragement to mechanize and modernize operations have helped many growers be far more successful. They have also made thousands of new plants available to consumers.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Karl Batschke, president of Darwin Perennials. I reached him in Chicago at Ball’s headquarters. Ironically, he too was a former perennial customer of Whiteman at his family business in Michigan. Knowing the history of the Whiteman Company and its goal of sourcing some of the best new perennials in the world, he said this objective continues but with a significant difference. Darwin is committed to encouraging their breeders to develop new perennials that have better pest and disease tolerance, greater plant longevity and a far longer blooming period.
Tumblr media
As thousands of conventionally bred seedlings are examined, Darwin is asking their breeders to look for unique characteristics, selecting them down to hundreds and, finally, narrowing them down to the few most promising plants. Batschke mentioned that it’s important to determine the right genetics to ensure these new perennials, especially the longer-blooming ones, improve year-after-year and continue to provide colour over a longer period.
According to Batschke, three key issues are important when developing new perennials:
• The ultimate goal is to ensure consumers have remarkable, durable new plants.
• The new plants must fit the parameters of what growers need to produce high-quality products.
• There needs to be a constant, reliable supply of these new plants to meet the growing demand around the world.
I appreciate this approach because it ensures that these new perennials have been vetted before arriving at garden stores. What we’re really talking about here is the development of perennials that act like annuals in terms of providing longer blooming periods, with the added bonus of coming back each year for a repeat performance. This is a major step forward in the world of perennials. We must remember, however, that first-year plants need to become established and may not perform up to expectations until they have truly settled in and matured.
So, what are these exciting new varieties? Will they be available in B.C. this year? I ran the following list by Batschke and got his approval and his assurance that enough of these varieties will be in growers’ hands this spring to ensure good availability. Because growers receive most of these new plants as small ‘plugs’, it will be late June or July before they have sized-up enough for sale.
Tumblr media
Here is the exciting lineup of some of the plants that we can expect to see this year:
• Achillea ‘Milly Rock’ Series: Zone 5a, Grows 10-12 inches, Blooms April-September.
• Armeria ‘Dreameria’ Series: 5a, 10-12 inches, March-October.
• Coreopsis ‘Uptick’ Series: 5, 12-14 inches, March-November.
• Lavender ‘Primavera’: 7a, 16-18 inches, spring/winter.
• Leucanthemum ‘Whitecap’: 5a, 14-16 inches, March-October.
• Nepeta ‘Whispurr Blue’: 4a, 24 inches, April-September
• Penstemon ‘Cherry Sparks’: 5a, 18-20 inches, May-August
• Phlox ‘Ka-Pow’ 5 colours: 4b, 18-20 inches, June-August
• Salvia ‘Mirage’ Series 9 colours: 7, 12-14 inches, March-September
• Veronica longifolia ‘Forever Blue’: 4b, 16-18 inches, June-October.
The ultimate test for each of these plants is their performance in our gardens. Try a few in your perennial areas to extend the colour.
A huge thank you to Darwin Perennials and the Ball Horticultural Company for their innovation and dedication to breeding new plants. Their efforts are making a remarkable contribution to the world of gardening.

The Color Purple-Plants
By Cynthia Brian
“God gets mad if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it.”  Alice Walker, The Color Purple
As I amble through my April garden, I know that God is very happy! Purple, the color of royalty, wisdom, and luxury is favored in the majority of my botanical blooms.  The nobility of the season is highlighted with the elegantly perfumed lilac, the scented grace of cascading wisteria, and the pride of the dark and handsome hellebore as it changes from its deep shaded amethyst of winter to the violet and chartreuse of spring. Bees are swarming, sucking the sweet nectar from the fragrant flowers of lavender, freesia, and the Chinese fringe.  Shades of indigo, mauve, and sangria pepper the landscape offering a powerful presence yet calming expression.
Purple bearded iris and Dutch iris tender their brilliance in the middle of the weed filled hillside where Jerusalem star, also known as goat’s beard thrive. Bulbs and rhizomes are the ultimate VIP’s of my garden. Once planted, I forget about them until they burst into bloom, a welcome surprise especially when other plants are failing.  If you are a beginner gardener, I highly recommend indulging in bulbs for all seasons. Most require little maintenance and effort with minimal water while providing maximum results. Some of my perennial favorites that are available in hues of purple include calla lily, gladiolus, oriental lily, bearded iris, Asiatic lily, dahlia, anemone, and naked lady.
I love the color purple and have dedicated this month to everything purple.  If you’d like to bring a bit more of the richness of purple into your outdoors, I recommend checking out a few of these favorite cultivars.

SPLASH your barbecue grill with white vinegar then scrub with half an onion to clean the grates and get ready for outside dining.
BUFF your garden tools by plunging them in a five-gallon bucket of sand mixed with a cup of vegetable oil. The sand will keep them sharper and the oil wards off rust. Small hand tools can be stored in the sand bucket.
PLANT frost tender plants as the weather warms towards the end of the month. Ground covers, citrus, bougainvillea, and summer annuals are available for purchase.
SOW seeds of scarlet runner bean, sweet peas, or morning glories to climb on fences and wire.
RESIST cutting back the dying leaves of narcissi and daffodils. The frongs are gathering their nutrition for next year’s blooms. Cut them back only when as dry as potato chips.
BAIT the snails and slugs, pick them off by hand, use copper barriers, or bowls of beer. These slimy crawlers will devour new seedlings.
BUY ladybugs from your nursery or garden center if you see aphids or other pests on your plants. Remember ladybugs fly to infested gardens.
