Fellow Neurodivergent people! What are some of your favorite books with Nerodiverse characters? Please comment your favorites!
A few that I have read that I have enjoyed:
The Boy Who Steals Houses by C.G Drews (This whole series is amazing! Other two books on Patron! Autism and Anxiety representation!)
Human Enough by E.S Yu (Autism representation!)
The Fort by Gordon Korman (OCD representation!)
A Quiet Kind Of Thunder by Sara Barnard (selective mutism representation! I'm not sure if this is a type of neurodiversity, so let me know if it is not!)

Over the years, I've gotten the feeling that being into musicals is "Weird" A lot of musicals are old and have racism and sexism embedded in them, the musical Wicked, which Kavi goes to see, is ableist against Nessa, so being into musicals is weird. I'm disabled and was around adult therapists a lot, so they would know what Mary Martin Peter Pan was for example, but as I got older it was harder to socialize with people my own age because of my interest in musicals. I love that Kavi was in Annie because I wanted to be Annie to Memorialize my Dad. Kavi made me feel seen for who I am inside!
Kavi is AuDHD like me.Varsha Bajaj. chooses to show her receiving accommodations rather than say what type of neurodivergent she is which is fine I guess.

I don’t think autism is being seen from all lenses — except when they’re actually mentally or physically affected.
(I’m speaking as someone who has been diagnosed from a young age, so experiences may not be the same as what you see in the media!)
Whenever you think about someone with autism, what do you think about? Chances is that you probably have the media depiction of it. However, that’s not how we’re all like — or at least 90% of the time.
If I have to say, I feel like there is a silent majority of us that may never get our voices heard enough to where people can see that autism does not always mean high functioning.
I was diagnosed at just age of 3. As soon as the doctors found that out about me, they immediately took control of my life and shut me out of any school that other kids would go to. I remember from a young age being sad that my older sisters got to go to school whilst I had to stay at home and be homeschooled by a special needs teacher.
Because of that, I never got to experience life outside of my own family and would feel alienated when mixing in with people that do knowing that I’m the only one that doesn’t. It really affected me — even now.
Whenever I tried to call out and complain to a social worker or a teacher, they would always come back to me not answering the question saying “but having autism makes you unique and special” or “but [insert celebrity here] has autism and they’re also smart” and some shit. The constant sugar coating is very prevalent here since it still happens until this day. It always didn’t feel right when they say stuff like that. But little did young 8 year old me knew that they were purposefully infantilising me and keeping me away from the truth — alas, it didn’t stop me from finding out the hard way when my parents told me that the doctors thought that I wasn’t academic enough, despise being self aware on how they were treating me.
I don’t know why this never shows up whenever the topic of autism shows up. It makes me feel alone thinking that only people with autism should accept it as a part of them when really, it was a daunting label that nearly cost my education and it has been such an emotionally alienating experience that I never wish anyone had to go through. And the fact that people are seeing it as a “quirky” thing and even lying about having it is such an embarrassment. Not even just that, but really insulting to people like me who had to go through something like this. Imagine having to go through something like that and not seeing anybody else having to do the same thing. It sure made me feel alone, and I hope you do too because it’s awful.
The UK system is literally fucked up. Apparently my second niece from my sister may have autism too — which isn’t bad by the way, but it’s scary to think that she may have to go through the same thing again. Having to second handedly go through this experience another time is exhausting and I just want it to stop.
Stop infantilising us. Some of us don’t need a lot of support.
Edit: Written something wrong so I changed it to make more sense.

The nuerodivergent batch (mostly)
Me and my bf watched up to episode five of season 2 (all that is available rn) of the Bad Batch, and we now have headcannons.
Spoilers for season 2 under the cut!
Note: we both are nuerodivergent, using research, personal experiences, and experiences of others as reference. Neither of us are professionals. These are HC for fun. :]
Even in their concept, they reflect a lot of things that happen to people considered 'abnormal' in real life. Being avoided, often disliked and generally being marked as different.
Let's start with Wrecker, he's actually one of the most interesting.
It's very easy to see he's childish, initially he may seem underdeveloped BUT clones age twice as fast, so what if his brain is just developing at average speed? His body is leaving his head behind, he's were he should be. Everyone else is just going at double the speed. He may have some form of dyslexia or discalcalculia, with him having issues reading and understanding numbers in the show.
Next is Tech, who I believe is autistic. He takes things very literally, as seen in his deconstruction rather than reaction to Wanda Skyes' compliment/flirting. Has a special interest in technology, studying and mastering it. Along with his general social awkwardness with strangers, oftentimes due to his lack of emotional reaction and taking things literally. Also seeming uncomfortable with physical closeness, disliking when the survivor got too close while celebrating how he fixed the memory bank thing with his people's history saved in it.
Also on the autism spectrum we have Hunter. With his elevated senses being a parallel to how many autistic people have more intense (and often overwhelming) senses and ability to perceive the world around them. Often culminating in 'picky' eating, texture preference, overstimulation and perception of things others may not notice. He seems the most 'normal' compared to his squad mates, being the easiest to mask (act like a 'normal/average person to fit in) and generally go under the radar. He also seems to be the most trained of the group, needing to hone his skills into something useful in combat. He hasn't had any noticeable signs of overstimulation yet, but most of the places he goes to regularly have rather simple color palettes. Along with the uniforms worn in the imperial/Republic's army. Even when he is often in combat, things are fairly simple and he could even have ways to adjust/cope if it does bother him because of all his experience. I also thought of this fun little hc detail.. he could mask, he already seems to be the best at befriending 'regs'. But he doesn't, he customizes his uniform, grows out his hair, wears accessories like his bandana, because he is proud to be different. He is happy to have his squad. He won't hide it. :)
TW: DISCUSSION OF DEPRESSION (in this next paragraph, skip if you aren't comfortable reading about that)
Crosshair shows signs of clinical depression in the episode 'The solitary clone'. He doesn't finish his food, just eating a bit and giving up on it when he's called to the admiral or whatever guy's office. (Loss of appetite) Is seen sitting awake before the daily alarm goes off both times holding his head in his hands, seeming just kind of..depressed honestly. (Early rising/insomnia) He also seems to be very isolated from other clones, social isolation is also a symptom. This one is a very obvious sign his mental health is not in a good place, being one the the most noticeable symptoms of depression. And a loss of interest/enjoyment of activities, he seems to be living in routine. Many people with depression describe experiences of 'being on autopilot' just going through a daily routine with little to no positive or any emotion at all. We are informed he was waiting to be medically cleared for duty, being in a sorry state when he was retrieved after the squad abandoned him. This would have left him alone and possibly in that autopilot state for weeks or even months. The military is a place that runs off its routine, causing this behavior to not be picked out as abnormal or concerning. He also seems to lack much motivation, just finishing his missions. Possibly even becoming reliant on assignments to give him a sense of purpose.
Echo very likely has PTSD from going through an explosion and being rebuilt. His concept on a base level sounds very dark and traumatic. He isn't shown having any flashbacks or extreme reactions suggesting this though. But he is also marked as 'other' by Regs and Kaminoans. Being somebody who is disabled, or possibly differently abled, being able to hack systems with his replaced arm-screw thing. Being seen as abnormal due to his changes, even though they are helpful and were made to help him survive.
Omega doesn't show any obvious signs of neurodivergency. But she likely isn't going to be completely normal with such an...unconventional upbringing.
I'd be really happy to hear about you guys' thoughts! I'll be back with more stuff like this.
Note: they were seen as advantageous, so they may have had some 'undesirable' qualities removed or not appearing, otherwise they may have been euthanized. :(

UN-POPULAR OPINION I THINK: I DONT LIKE WEDNESDAY, not the day, the show on netflix, ANYWAYS HERE IS MY RANT.
The internet is amazing, no one cares about my opinion and yet here it is.
Anyways..
Ok, so on paper it seems really good, and I love Jenna Ortega in it, she played it wonderfully and the latina representation was gorgeous, they nailed her character 100%. But the amount of missed opportunities on that dam show I swear. First of all and probably the most annoying TEENAGERS DONT TALK OR ACT LIKE THAT TF. l
Like I'm around that age and the amount of weird outfits and random coffee shop things and all that was so fucking annoying like a classic case of adults not knowing how to write teens. Also they never fucking went to class. Not once. I get that the plot was about the mystery, but they could have at least used it as a setting once or twice. Or implied there was homework, like, more than once. They went to plant school that one time but THAT WAS IT. As someone who is aggressively overwhelmed by homeowkr that I'm paralyzed by it this was widely inaccurate. And the use of the words "normie" and "outcast" was so fucking annoying. Like please stop.
Also, I feel like the plot could have been a little deeper, if they had just been more explicit about people they were representing. I've heard fan theories about how the whole thing was a metaphor for people on the autism spectrum, and I actually really liked that idea, I'm not nerodivergent, I don't think, but Wednesday seems like she would fit this well, especially with the plot line of her neglecting friends because she was extremly focused on her SPECIAL PROJECT TM. but they did zero with that. She spoke very briefly about how the pilgrams had stolen land, that was great, but that could have been taken further. When laurel said that thing about how nevermore was on "stolen" land I thought Wednesday was going to pull out books and maps and shit but NOTHING. Also, yes, I know, including a couple of black characters in the background was a ton of project for Tim Burton but come on, they could have gotten better roles/plotlines (one dead, one a dangerous bigot, one with a dysfucntional family who got the spotlight for one episode), there could have been more minorities in the cast, THEY COULD HAVE USED THEIR EXISTENCE TO TELL MORE STORIES. Wasted potential. And the one that bothers me most. WEDNESDAY ADAMS IS THE MOST QUEER CODED CHARACTER I HAVE EVER SEEN. SHES AND OUTCAST HER ONLY REAL CONNECTION WAS WITH HER FUCKING ROOMATE . THEY COULD HAVE KISSED, COME ON MAN. Wednesday was an "outcast", literally every gay kid ever. Come on. I'm too tired to lay out the arguments, but that bitch ain't straight, infact I'm pretty sure she's not even bi, girl's a lesbian. Doesn't want to turn into her parents who's whole thing is that they are madly hetero for each other that's a dead fucking giveaway. And enid's whole plot line where they actually name dropped conversion therapy was weird. And then she became a werewolf anyways? Like what was that plotline? No I'll never change for you, my disrespectful mother who wants me to be different. But I changed by myself to be that exact thing so it's fine now. Like let's be real, this was supposed to mean something, some writer thought this was meant to be like a thing about uniqueness or something, but even then what was this????
But you know what, the main plot was decent, I actually got invested, love Wednesday, and even though they hired adults to play children at least they didn't sexualize them.

MOON KNIGHT PROPAGANDAAAAAA!
moon knights been a really influential character for both me as well as many other people. the system has been able to be representation for many marginalized groups. not only have they represented systems in media, they’ve also been representation for latino individuals, as well as jewish individuals. the overall blend of these three things that the moon knight system are is honestly kinda graceful. all of these are often misrepresented or never represented in media, and both the show and most of the comic runs have represented it in a respectable way. as a nerodivergent latino individual, i HIGHLY relate to every one of the members of the moon knight system, and hold them all close to my heart. never had i really seen someone like me on screen, and instantly felt a deep connection to them. i hope my story shows how important these characters are to many people. wishing y’all a lovely day/knight!
Just need to say that I love that pun at the end!

Hello! I just wanted to let you know that I love your Demiurge stories and that they always make me smile. One of my favorites that I like to go back and read over and over is “Demiurges Special Little Pet” which has a more neuro-divergent MC. I really liked this a lot because it was very relatable and I don’t see this kind of representation in fics a lot! Do you have any plans to do more stuff with a neuro-divergent MC? Even if you don’t do more with this specific MC, thank you so much for writing this story and all your other Demiurge stories. I look forward to seeing all the stuff you do in the future!❤️🧡💛💚💙
Aww, thank you for the lovely words! They are super welcome around this time of the year. ♥
I am also happy the nerodivergent MC was enjoyed! She certainly came from a personal place in my own heart, all things considered. ♥
I wouldn't mind writing to more like her! I wouldn't even mind continuing on from that story either, as I had other plans to elongate it a bit.
I did want Demiurge to try and understand that this human isn't like other humans or even people in Nazarick. It was going to slowly become a story about understanding one another really.
Thank you again for the lovely comment! It means a lot to me! ;^; ♥

:[ Anonymous asked : What do you think is your MOST unpopular opinion about zexal? ]:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
   | I’ve put off answering this question for a while now, almost half a year, because I genuinely dont know how well it will be received..
( If you dont wish to read it because you’re not sure you’ll like it here’s a secondary unpopular opinion : Yuma’s design looks better when he has his dad’s tan. )
To rip the band-aid off : I dont like that Yuma is a part of Astral’s soul.
While may have framed it as a romantic ‘Soulmates’ situation and others have seen it as a close brotherly connection akin to family, for me it just grinds at me because it feels like it Undercuts the Genuine effort of both Yuma and Astral when it came to learning to understand each other and become friends.
Tumblr media
It’s easy to forget later on into the series but these two had to Work Hard to become as close as they are. I’d go as far to say they served as wonderful representation for young kids on how to adapt to their Nerodivergent and neurotypical friends! Yuma has to Listen and Adapt his way of talking and explaining over the course of Almost Twenty Episodes to get to a state where he can communicate with Astral smoothly in a way the envoy understands. Similarly it takes even more episodes for Astral to adapt his methods of explanation and how he goes about helping Yuma. This all takes so long because they have to Learn how to read each other and how to best help each other. It took time, patience and a Willingness to learn and change methods for them to become so inseparable.
Which is where my problem with the ‘Yuma is Actually part of Astral’ thing came from,,,
To say that they were ‘Destined to work together’ ‘Fated to form a bond closer then any before’ just feels like it cheapens all the work they did to get there. It feel less like they grew so close out of a beautifully genuine desire to understand and befriend each other and more because ‘Well obviously they’d get along eventually that’s part of his soul right there!’
This is an issue i have with ‘chosen one’ plots in general, in that they undercut the protagonist’s actual personality and choices in some areas because ‘they’re fated to’
It makes the story feel less like Yuma was eventually able to form Zexal with Astral because he took Genuine time and Effort to understand and befriend him in a genuine display of compassion and kindheartedness even from someone as stubborn as a 13 year old boy : And turns it into this grand destiny thing that was bound to happen anyway because hes The Special One whos the Only One who could ever form Zexal which-
   I dont like...
I dont like that their friendship became this destained thing,    I dont like that Zexal went from a metaphor of the wonders that can be created when you learn to understand and befriend those different then you into some prophesized savior.
I,, dont know perhaps it is just my dislike for prophecy plots,,     But,, yeah, Thats my most Unpopular Opinion.  |

Carlton
my original character Carlton is very special to me, i tend to try and make him like me in ways, he’s different from me in a lot of ways but he’s still kinda like me
i made him back in 7th grade for the sake of his mothers back story
then he was an Undertale Oc
but now he’s just him or well me
he’s the guy in my PFP i make his personality like mine, and give him a few things i have, he has ADHD like me and is rather shy and quiet, he’s a bit lonely and enjoys music
he is more of my calmer side, it feels odd to make a male character just like me but i want him to be like me, he looks nothing like me but he acts and thinks like me
if you want representation you haft to make it yourself
so i made an old Undertale OC into someone like me mentally and how i think and feel
I hope people find him and i can write him right so people learn what it’s actually like to have ADHD (or in my case ADHD paired with high functioning Autism)

If the 2020s are doing one thing for us, they are giving us positive explicit queer representation in urban fantasy, and as a kid who grew up in the 2010s where Stevn Universe was the exception, that really means a ton to me.
And while yes, you have shows like Loki that just have passing mentions of the main character being gender fluid and bisexual
Tumblr media
You also have shows like what we do in the shadows and the owl house with queer Lantina and Latino characters where their sexuality is discussed in universe and seen as a positive thing and not a tragic back story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If anything, Luz and Guillermo have a similar back story where their love of the occult and monsters are used as metaphors for their queerness long before we the audience know about it.
Then you have shows like Good omens where the characters aren't even physical on screen but just the way they act around each other we all know they're in love. A queer relationship with out labels.
Tumblr media
Like, gay stories are finally being told, and they're not just about white gay people in acceptable gay rolls. They're about people who have never been in long term relationships, they're about people of color And nerodivergent people who dont hate themselves, but still feel unloved. They're about non binary people, and gender fluid people, they're about religious trauma and how we don't hate that we're gay, but it came with a lot of emotional baggage. They're about not fitting into a society we were never a part of in the first place.
I touched on this earlier, but there s a reason that Urban fantasy being gay is so important.
The occult has always been used by writers to talk about sexuality. Often called "the monster in the closet" and I mean ALWAYS. Dracula and Dorian Gray have been here for ages.
We feel a pull to in an fantasy because we understand that there is a two faced world. There is the normal world where we're expected to act one way and for in, and the magic world where we are, aloud to be ourselves and our gender and sexuality are not the strangest things lurking about.
So seeing gay representation be so bold and open in these worlds feels natrual.
As someone who struggled with my attraction to women for years, and has flip floped between calling myself bi sense I was 15, what finally pushed me over the edge was seeing Loki just come out and say it. Seeing there was no shame, no hesitation, just answering the the question of who he's been with by saying "a bit of both" felt fucking freeing.
And seeing that so many people are also getting those characters who are saying that there's no shame in being queer (many of them targeted at kids who deserve to know that at a younger age) It makes me really really happy
