OK, so this story really ballooned in my mind and it started to become clear that drawing it all out would be a pretty big undertaking, especially since much of it is exposition.
I made the pivot to writing most of it out because as a dyslexic person, it does me good to practice writing (I tried for the style of a history book? Maybe?). Prior warning on any typos, just roll with it.
In post-war Illyria, the land finds itself ensnared in a web of adversity. A dwindling population hampers agricultural endeavors, while power struggles over vacant leadership positions sow discontent among the people. Whispers circulate, advocating for Illyria's right to select its own leader from someone who lives within their own borders.
This chosen person would safeguard the interests of Illyria and its inhabitants from being used as a military power but ignored in times of peace. Progression is overdue, trade is being stunted, and the now-largely female population (due to the losses during the war) is eager for equality.
And thus enters Emerie, a Carynthian and a Valkyrie, as well as a small-business proprietor. Practical and resolute, Emerie begins to garner support from the predominantly female populace, with her Carynthian status creating male allies as well. She envisions a future of thriving trade, using her own experience running her shop, and dreams of Illyria never being lacking in spices and salt.
She envisions cultivating an economy based on tourism, enticing other courts to partake in Illyria's small shops and enterprises, and this will help build new businesses like hotels and guided tours.
Tumblr media
As the movement gains traction, the final piece of the puzzle falls into place: Devlon. Possessing the wisdom of age and name recognition she lacks, Devlon bridges the divide between the disparate camp factions and gives her 'legitimacy' to the wary males by standing as Emerie's second-in-command.
Devlon wants independence for Illyria and is smart enough to see that getting on board with Emerie and her group would give the movement more traction and more likelihood of success.
(It helps that Nesta, ever vigilant, casts an ominous witchy glance at Devlon whenever he looks to be up to no good. He will eventually establish himself as a trusted confidant to Emerie and her government. )
In a collaborative effort with their loyal companions, Emerie and Devlon meticulously pen a declaration of independence so thorough and thoughtful that even Rhys, the High Lord of the Night Court, accedes to its terms. Acknowledging that the most advantageous course of action for Illyria is to empower it, Rhys pledges financial aid as seed capital while the newly independent nation gets on its feet. A special bond endures between Illyria and the Night Court, now operating as sovereign entities with far less strain than before.
Tumblr media
Emerie becomes the Prime, with Devlon as her Second-in-Command. There's an initial forum with citizens to share their worries, followed by a celebratory party DJ-ed by Nesta's ipod-egg and featuring singing by Gwyn.
Rhysand employs this secession as a catalyst to deepen his involvement in the Hewn City, but this time with benevolent intentions. Bereft of the Illyrian army, he endeavors to gain control over the Darkbringers and seeks to enhance the quality of life therein, offering the possibility of migration to Velaris for those who desire it.
With Nesta and Cassian at the helm of two formidable armies—the Valkyries and the Illyrians, respectively—Illyria solidifies its status as a force to be reckoned with in Prythian. This commands immediate respect from the other courts, who are intrigued at this new country for them to trade and visit (but not dare to take on in battle).
Oh, and did I mention that our trailblazer Emerie secures a seat at the High Lord table being the first female and elected leader to sit there? Because she does.
Gwyn, bravely venturing forth from the confines of the library, champions the cause of non-High Fae rights. As a part-nymph, she has personally encountered bigotry, which resonates with the plight of other marginalized fae and Illyrians. (Remember all that 'lesser fae' bs from ACOTAR?)
Gwyn assumes the mantle of their advocate, bolstered by Nesta, who desires a future where her part-Illyrian child will never experience such animosity. Several priestesses get involved and their 'safe haven library' mission expands to other courts (becoming a quasi-embassy) run by a priestess-ambassador. Helion and Meallan are invaluable as transportation while they get set up.
In this shared mission, Nesta stands as Gwyn's steadfast second, while Gwyn reciprocates as Nesta's second within the Valkyrie army. Together, they dedicate their efforts to train any woman who aspires to be empowered and thrive.
Emerie bestows a position of authority upon one of her close friends in Windhaven; a fellow small-business owner, who becomes the Chief of Trade. She begins by establishing a robust import framework, laying the groundwork for future exports and imports. Initially targeting the Night Court as a trade partner, their aspirations eventually extend to encompass all of Prythian.
Azriel becomes both emissary for the Night Court and shared spymaster. This mutually beneficial alliance allows Illyria and the Night Court to share confidential intelligence. By being more involved in Illyria, Azriel begins to reconcile his own long-held prejudices to his people and heritage. He splits his time evenly between the two courts (when he's not spying).
Nesta and Cassian live in Illyria full-time, training their armies and raising their family. Nesta also dedicates time to creating a night life by helping establish several clubs/bars with dancing and music for all to enjoy. Eventually talented Illyrians will form schools dedicated to the arts. Speaking of school...
Devlon's cause is education. Too proud to ever admit he's wrong, he realizes he needs to be right more often than not to make that work. He sets up schools in each camp, many of which also serve as boarding schools for the orphans. He claims it because it's because he doesn't want to deal with wild children running about, but he becomes very invested in education and it gets really dusty in here whenever a child hugs his leg.
Tumblr media
This emancipation advances Illyria and the relationship with the Night Court is forever made more solid now that there's mutual respect and admiration between the two.
Are you still reading? Oh my goodness, thank you. As you can see, this idea would have been tricky to draw out since most of it is exposition.

There are so many things I adore about Gwynriel, but right now I'm particularly loving how Azriel -- the stoic and stony Spymaster of the Night Court -- is repeatedly amused by Gwyn. And you know what they all say about how sharing a similar sense of humor is important for a thriving relationship...
Quotes:
"Az stared after her, brows high with amusement."
"Azriel's lips twitched."
"Azriel couldn't help his soft chuckle."
*Gwyn makes a joke about Nessian being too into each other to conduct training properly.* "Azriel laughed. 'I'll give you that.'"
And the last three were when he "wouldn't go so far as to call Gwyn a friend". Like imagine this: he was already so comfortable with her and found her company entertaining when he didn't consider them friends (since this bonus scene was earlier on in the book). Like -- just their potential!
And of course, the one that everyone knows:
"So he offered her a crooked smile."
AHHHHHHHHH!!! *this is the sound of me screaming until my soul has left this world, btw*
Are they in love right now? OF COURSE NOT! No one, NO ONE is claiming that they are head over heels in love with each other right now. But do I see their relationship developing into eventual love and acceptance of each other? Hell yes!
I find it interesting that Azriel was so self-conscious of his scarred hands around Elain, thinking himself sullied, but around Gwyn he was so completely relaxed that he didn't even think about his hands. He even had to fight back the urge to "open up her wrist and rotate the blade" (which he obviously didn't do out of respect for her personal boundaries). Like he was willing to make physical contact with her to demonstrate how to do the move correctly (and no, not in a skinship or sexual manner, but just pointing out how he could be around Gwyn without hiding himself).
Azriel doesn't need to be fixed.
Gwyn doesn't need to be fixed.
They need acceptance, and I believe they can find that in each other.
I still firmly maintain that Gwynriel is endgame but if the stars misalign and the sun rises from the west, I will still be a Gwynriel shipper. I have shipped non-canon couples in other media before. My love for them burns just as bright nonetheless.
But fear not, Gwynriels, we will get the story the world deserves to know 💖

💞 Like calls to like💞
“Like call to like” is a quote that SJM has stated numerous times in the acotar series. This quote also goes for her mates. SJM is known to want her mates equal. She’s not known to do an opposites attract mating bond.
From what I gathered from the text with feysand, Nessian, gwynriel, and elucien; each couple has many similarities between them.
Based on what I gathered, which is canon evidence throughout the series, we can see that Azriel and Gwyn have enough connections and similarities that make them equals. And since we know elucien is already mated, we can see why they are deemed equals.
✨Feysand✨
• They are one of the most, if not just the most, powerful fae in Prythian. (Rhys is the most powerful high lord in Prythian history & Feyre has all 7 high lords powers.)
•Feyre’s birthday is on the longest night of the year (winter solstice) and Rhysand is high lord of the night court.
•Both of them rule the night court with the “high title”. (Feyre is the first leading lady of a court to have a title that is equal to an high lord.)
•Both are compassionate when it comes to their family. They really love their families.
•Both are morally gray characters. Feyre has a mean streak so does Rhys. Rhys is more advertised to be morally gray but I just think Feyre is too.
•Both felt/feel like they are monsters at some point.
•Both are cunning.
•Both have calculated minds.
•Both will become monsters to defend their love ones.
•Both felt like they weren’t worthy of good things at some point.
•Don’t like to share the burden of their troubles.
•Both sacrificial fools.
•They both are trained warriors and fighters.
🗡Nesta & Cassian🗡
•Cassian is the general/commander of the Illyrian’s and we get foreshadowing that Nesta would be the general/commander of the valkyries.
•They both are trained warriors/fighters.
•Both thought less of themselves. (Cassian often called himself just a bastard born nobody and Nesta thought she wasn’t shit and a waste of space.)
•They both thought they didn’t deserve one another.
•They both thought they didn’t fit each other’s standards.
•Both have calculated minds.
•Both have minds that can calculate a battlefield. (We know this due to Cassian being a general/commander but we see that Nesta used a ballroom as her battlefield to spite a girl who was mean to Elain.)
•Both have a connection with death. Cassian walks alongside death because he’s a warrior. Nesta has death magic and is called lady death.
•They both have a connection to dancing and music. (Nesta dances and loves music. Cassian has so much skill and precision in battling that is was like a dance. And for him, battle is a symphony. He has a death dance. (Page 509, ACOWAR)
•Training helps both of them clear their heads.
•They rather put themselves in danger than their families.
•Both have insecurities and doubt themselves.
•At one point both of them were filled with self loathing.
•They both have the power and abilities to be courtiers.
•Both hate the spring pollen.
•Both have allergies.
•Both were poor and starving when they were younger & growing up.
•Nesta has the title lady death, and Cassian has the title lord of blooshed which can also mean death.
⚔️Gwyn & Azriel⚔️
Both of them believe that they are too impure/dirty/scarred.
I think Gwyn sees herself as impure because she thinks she doesn’t deserves to wear her priestess stone, which ties into the guilt of her sister.
Azriel always thinks negative thoughts of his scarred hands and with his bonus chapter we see he kind of thinks his job in Hewn City taints him.
They both believe they don’t deserve the people in their life and good things.
“He might have defied and proved those illyrian pricks wrong at every turn, but it won’t matter if Rhys makes him Prince of Velaris, he’ll see himself as a bastard born nobody, and not good enough for anyone.” (pg 511, ACOMAF)
Once again, we see that Gwyn feels that she doesn’t even deserve to wear her invoking stone because she failed her sister and she blames herself, to the point she couldn’t see Catrin’s grave.
They both have the Illyrian title, Carynthian, for conquering the blood rite. (Even though Gwyn decided she rather have the valkyrie title).
Both are trained warriors/fighters.
They both can sing.
Gwyn was the one who gave the readers something new and personal about Azriel.
They both are very competitive.
“Roslin, Ananke, and Deirdre were close on their heels, propelling Gwyn to push her group harder. She wanted to be the first. Wanted Nesta and Emerie and her to be the ones who wiped the smirks from Azriel’s and Cassian’s faces. Especially Azriel’s. (pg 624, ACOSF)
“Who ever lands the next blow wins.” “That’s ridiculous,” Az panted back. “We go until one of us eats dirt.” Az had a viscous competitive streak. It wasn’t boastful and arrogant like Cassian, or possessive and terrifying like Amren’s. No, it was quiet, cruel and utterly lethal. (Pg 254, ACOSF)
When it comes to challenges/tasks, they both have to do it/finish it and if they don’t they get frustrated and see their selves as failures and push hard to finish whatever it is.
“Tell me you found their secret to cutting the ribbon.” “You and that ribbon.” Nesta muttered, shutting the tome. Of all of them, Gwyn had become the most relentless about succeeding. (Pg 519, ACOSF)
Assess—and brood, it seemed, since Azriel had barely managed a polite hello to me before launching into squatting with Rhysand, his face grim and tight. They’d been at it now for an a hour straight, their slender blades like flashes of quicksilver as they moved around and around. I wondered if it was as much for practices as it was for Rhys to help his spymaster work off his frustration. (Page 293, ACOMAF) We see that Azriel couldn’t get his spies into the mortal queens court and was frustrated about it. Plus he wasn’t happy when hybern attacked summer and he didn’t know about it.
They both are very stubborn.
“The argument with Rhys this morning had been swift and brutal: Azriel insisted he could fly—fight with the legions, as they planned. Rhys refused. Cassian refused. Azriel threatened to slip into shadow and fight anyway. Rhys merely said that if he so much as tried, he’d chain Azriel to a tree (Pg 610, ACOWAR)
I’m going in,” Azriel said. “No” rhys snapped. But Azriel was spreading his wings, the sunlight so stark on the new, slashing scars down the membrane. “chain me to a tree Rhys,” Azriel said softly. “Go ahead.” He began checking the buckled on his weapons. “I’ll rip it out of the ground and fly with it on my damned back.” (ACOWAR, page 6??)
“No.” “I can use the bottleneck of the path right there,” Nesta plowed ahead, pointing to the space beyond the archway, “to keep them off long enough for you two to reach the top. Or dawn to come. Whichever happens first." Gwyn bared her teeth. “I refuse to leave you here." Emerie's pained face told Nesta enough: she understood. Saw the logic. Nesta said to Gwyn, “It is the only way." Gwyn screamed, “IT IS NOT THE ONLY WAY!* And then she was sobbing. “I will not abandon you to them. They will kill you.” “You need to go, Nesta said, even as her hands began shaking. “Now." “No," Gwyn wept. “No, I won't. I'll face it with you." (Page 704, ACOSF)
Would do anything for their friends/family, including literally fighting to their death and sacrifice themselves to save the ones they love.
We see this with Gwyn not wanting to leave Nesta be herself to go against the Illyrian’s during the blood rite. That Gwyn would rather die than leave Nesta on her own. (Pg 704, ACOSF)
“I wondered if the shadowsinger was usually the first to throw himself into danger.” (pg 180, ACOMAF)
•Passionate about the ones and really love the people that they consider family.
•Gives their family a helping hand when it comes to physical and emotional factors and barriers. Azriel wanted to help Feyre learn to fly because he knows the emotional and physical barriers in learning how to fly late. We see that Gwyn helps Nesta with breathing techniques to calm her mind.
Azriel tucked in his wings, his beauty features uncharacteristically soft. Contemplative. “I’ll teach you.” “Are you certain?” I asked. The unreadable mask sloped back over Azriel’s face. “Rhys and cass were taught how to fly so young that they barely remember it.” But Azriel, locked in his hateful fathers dungeons like some criminal until he was eleven, denied the ability to fly, flight, to do anything bud illyrian instincts screamed at him to do. (Page 187, ACOWAR)
During ACOSF, (pages 409-411), Gwyn helped Nesta feel settled into her own skin for the first time in her life with mind stilling techniques that Gwyn help teach her.
Az & Gwyn both have similar quotes and sayings to their selfs to help them get through things.
“You are immortal,” he said quietly. “You are very hard to break”. A pause. “That’s what I told myself.” (Pg 305, ACOWAR).
Gwyn whispered, “I am the rock against which the surf crashes.” … “nothing can break me.” (621, ACOSF)
TRIGGER WARNING. They both were abused, whether emotionally or physically by the hands of men.
Azriel was physically trapped by his father in a cell and his hands were burned by fire by his brothers. He was only allowed to see his mother a hour out a of week.
Gwyn is trapped by the fear of living in the outside world due to the physical abuse she received by men in Sangravah, seeing her sister brutally murdered in front of her, and maybe due to the events of the Blood Rite.
They both have some interest in their worlds, the universe and have a connection to the overlapping worlds.
Gwyn worked with Merrill, who wrote about overlapping worlds and Gwyn is a researcher who helped Merrill with it.
Both are aware of the trove, which the harp is connected to other worlds.
Azriel is the one to find Bryce and his knife is the counterpart to her sword.
“In its center, a massive, working model of their world, the stars and planets around it. Az, of course had been fascinated. Rhys had built the model himself centuries ago. It could not only track the sun, but also tell time, and it somehow allowed Rhys to ponder the existence of life behind their own world.” (Page 37, ACOSF)
Both of them blame themselves and feel guilty over things they cannot control, nor was their fault.
Gwyn feels guilty and blames herself for Catrin’s death. She thinks she failed her.
Azriel feels guilty on the fact that he didnt save Mor before she was violated, he didn’t help Cassian before he was gutted in the second war, that he didn’t find out beforehand that Hybern was going to attack the summer court, etc.
Hybern had made their grand move at last. And we had not anticipated it. I knew Azriel would take the blame upon himself. One look at the shadowsinger as he prowled though the front door of the town house minute later, Cassian on his heels, told me that he already did. (Page 347, ACOWAR)
Both gather information.
Azriel is the spymaster who gathers intel for the Night Court. (I also think that Azriel also research things due to him being the spymaster as well. So assuming Azriel goes to the library for work is not so far fetched.)
Gwyn is a researcher who helps gathers information for Merrill. Plus she lives in a library period.
Their occupations puts pressure on them, causing them to hold themselves to high standards because they don’t like to fail.
She told me little of the specifics—even less about how the frustration of not being able to get his spies or himself into those courts took a toll on him. The standards to which he held himself, she confided in me, bordered on sadistic. (Page 376, ACOMAF)
Gwyn went on, “These females took me in. Gave me shelter and healing and family.” Again, her large eyes darkened. I cannot stand to fail them in anything. Especially someone as demanding as Merrill. Even when it might seem trivial.” (Page 148, ACOSF)
*They both have connections to the color blue.
They both have blue stones. Gwyn has a blue invoking stone and Azriel has a blue siphon.
When making the friendship bracelets one of Gwyn’s color was blue.
Gwyn’s priestess robes are blue.
Gwyn has blue teal eyes.
*They both have trouble sleeping.
“Bad dreams,” Nesta said. Gwyn asked, on Nesta’s other side, “do you have them often?” “Yes.” “Me too,” Gwyn said quietly. “Some nights, I need a sleeping potion from our healer to knock me out.” Gwyn said playing with her hair, “I dream of my past too.” (Page 329, ACOSF)
“Sleep, they seemed to whisper in his ear. Sleep. I wish I could, he answered silently. But sleep so rarely found him these days. Too many razor sharp thoughts sliced him any time he grew still long enough for them to strike. Too many wants and needs left his skin overheated and pulling across his bones. So he slept only when his body gave out, and even then only for a few hours.”(Azriel’s bonus chapter.)
They both are described as beautiful.
Gwyn nimbly rolled to her feet, grinning so broadly that Nesta was momentarily taken aback by it. The priestess has been pretty in the library, but with that joy, that confidence as she aimed for the three priestesses she had emerged into a beauty to rival Merrill or Mor. (Pg 317, ACOSF)
“But the second male, the more classically beautiful” (pg 158, ACOMAF)
Azriel was nothing short of beautiful. Even with those scarred hands and the shadows that flowed from him like smoke, she’d always found him to be the prettiest of the three males who called themselves brothers. (Page 100, ACOSF)
I think that Gwyn has the potential to also be a spy. She’s already physically trained. She’s able to help research for any future missions. In ACOSF, I don’t think there’s a coincidence for SJM to go into great detail on how Gwyn led the beast to the camp by spying on the beast for 2 days and learning their habits during the blood rite and have Azriel explain 6 pages later how spying is all about waiting for the right moment and Gwyn just so happen to have and say “timing that was just good luck.”
“I kept to the trees the first two nights, watching the beasts, and I spotted that horrible male and his companions this morning. Saw they’d found my nightgown and displayed it, and I knew they were hunting for you. I thought I’d take them out before they could find you.” “You lead the beast right to them.” “I learned where the beasts sleep during the day,” Gwyn said. “and that they get very angry when awoken.” she pointed to the cuts on her face, her hands. “I barely out ran that one as I led it toward the camp. My timing was just good luck, though.” (Pg 682, ACOSF)
“Azriel sharpen truth teller. the Black Blade absorbed the dim sunlight trickling through the forest canopy above. “it seems you’ve forgotten how much of spying is waiting for the right moment. people don’t engage in their evil deeds when it’s convenient to you. Cassian rolled his eyes. “I stopped spying because it bored me to death. I don’t know how you put up with this all the time.” “It suits me.” (page 688, ACOSF)
🌻Lucien & Elain🌻
They both can “see”. Elain is a seer & Lucien has a special eye that can see through glamours and spells.
Both are associated with nature, Elain is seen/associated with flowers (usually a rose) & Lucien is seen to be sunlight due to the fact Lucien name literally means “light” & his biological dad is the high lord of the Day court (we all know majority of flowers need sunlight to grow).
Both of their names mean light! Lucien’s name means light and Elain names means sun ray/sun light/ shining light.
They are both associated with animals. Elain is associated with a fawn and Lucien is associated with being a fox.
In the series we really didn’t see the both of them really speak up or defend themselves, and let people treat them any type of way, until ACOSF we see changes in that. Elain stepped up and wanted to be apart of helping with the dread trove.
They are both very underestimated by others in the series. Although Feyre & Rhys discussed how they know that Lucien has much more to offer. Amren & Rhys know that Elain has much to offer because Amren said that Elain is fully capable of defending herself against the dread trove and in the bonus chapter rhys mentioned that Elain has much more to give.
They both don’t like to be around cruelty. (we see that Lucien threw up seeing a fae have his wings cut off and looking pale when seeing a spiked head in the fountain in ACOTAR and we know Elain does not like the brutality of Hewn City & pales at the sight of a blade.)
They both are social butterfly’s. Lucien is known to know how to talk to people and he’s known to make many friends across different courts. Lucien also knows enough about the autumn court citizens to recognize who is apart of the court and who isn’t. Once Feyre’s family got their money and status back, Elain was very social with a group of girls and greeted everyone at the ball they threw in Feyre’s honor in ACOTAR. Nesta said that Elain used to love balls and parties.
They both dress good no matter what happens. Feyre pointed out in ACOTAR that even in poverty Elain still looked lovely and Cassian pointed out no matter how many jobs Lucien had, he still dresses good in ACOSF.
Both of them had their previous love interest “ripped” away from them. Graysen was no longer Elain’s after she turned fae because one, she was fae and two, became Lucien’s mate. Elain had no way of stopping herself from becoming fae. Lucien saw his girlfriend be executed in front of him and he had no way to get to her or stop it due to his family.
Don’t fit into their family’s courts. Lucien doesn’t fit into the Autumn Court. Elain is said to not fit in the Night Court by Cassian when they all visited Hewn City.

Elucien and gwynriel think the same way elriel thinks when it comes to ships😅 you see their coments and all they said is sjm’s Pinterest is full of elucien and gwynriel and that they have all the canon evidence and similarities with others ship. Elriels think the same way we think we are right and that all the evidence points to us. I mean I have seem multiple elucien saying they can’t wait to see our ship sink. The fandom is so clearly divided and each side thinks they are 100% right. They said we make everything about elain and we said they make everything about gwyn or lucien🤷🏼‍♀️ is literally the same way of thinking just with different characters. Honestly it makes me a little scared to who is really right when it comes to ship because every side is so sure they are right. I honestly just want elain’s book.
I disagree with this because i think there is a big difference between wishful thinking and canon evidence.
I am sorry, but Gwynriel is just whack. From purely evidentiary POV, if you are not an obsessed fan who spent 3 years looking at the 2nd part of the bonus chapter and thinking you got something, Gwynriel doesn't exist. Like ask ANY casual reader, who isn't influenced by anything (btw, when ACOSF just came out, I was a fan of ACOTAR but I wasn't a crazed Elriel. I was still mostly into Feysand and Nessian, and I wasn't dealing with Elriel, because that was coming later. So I was technically that casual reader) if they think Gwynriel is an actual thing, 99% of them will say no. And look at you like you just fell out of a tree. Literally, yesterday, someone asked their mom about their opinion, since they are reading ACOSF, and the mom was like 'what? Azriel and that teenager?" It's not US. It's reality. There is no Gwynriel. Sorry.
Elucien have a bond. But haven't the last 4 books shown that the bond and the lack of attraction between Elain and Lucien are kind of sus? Again, SJM throwing in a ton of 'what if the Cauldron was wrong? why not make them mates?" isnt there for shits and giggles. Could, extremely hypothetically, Elucien happen? I'd say, yes, it has more chances than Gwynriel, but it's not saying much. Also, Lucien was literally given a girlfriend! Why they keep bitching about Vassa, I have no idea. It's a fantasy. They can all be immortal, it's okay.
But seriously, I cannot CANNOT compare Gwynriel, which is just a combo of headcanons, what ifs, random wants and delirious TikTokers, with what is actually in the books for Elriel.
Seriously, what are we even comparing here? Huge scenes like the Hybern rescue, the TT exchange, the murder of the King, and I want to eat Elain out, to what, exactly?
I wanna cut the ribbon! Go ahead. Cut it.
Or
absolutely NO Elucien scenes. Name ONE Elucien scene? Other than him having a long ass monologue in his head? NONE exit.
So, I am gonna be honest, and will put on my 'Crazed Elriel' hat and say one is definitely not like the other two.

Text
Lucien and Azriel's thoughts on Elain
So let's go over and compare how Lucien and Azriel both think about Elain. For the canon context that we have. I'll also be pulling text from the Nessian bonus chapter since that chapter tends to be used in comparison with Azriel's bonus chapter as well. First, we have Lucien's thoughts. When Feyre jumps into Lucien's head in ACOWAR in Chapter 24, page 249. We can see here, the obvious that Lucien's mate instinct is to ravish Elain. Taste her, smell her, touch her. But we can also clearly see that he is fighting those instincts to give her the space that she needs. He is putting her needs before his. We can also see in this passage that Lucien is worried about her physical well-being. That is isn't eating enough and she's too thin to stand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, we can see in the text above, from the same scene as mentioned above, Elain mentions getting married to Graysen. The mating bond in Lucien makes him want to go feral that another man has set claim to his mate but instead of reacting on his instincts, he puts Elain first.
Tumblr media
In the above text, later it is Feyre and Rhysand chatting in their room when Feyre confesses to Rhysand what she did. Here we can see that even Feyre thinks Lucien is concerned for Elain. That Lucien's feelings for Elain are genuine.
So now, I'm going to pull text from Azriel's bonus chapter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a continuation of the text, I just had to put it into two different pictures.
So this bonus chapter happens in chapter 58 of Silver Flames. Azriel gifts Elain a necklace for Solstice. Azriel is thinking to himself how he wants Elain. He wants to touch her. Ravish her. (Which is not a bad thing.) But we can see in this second picture from the text that Azriel is only thinking about his needs. He can scent Elain's arousal and yes she gives him permission to kiss her. No one is arguing that. What makes this different from Lucien's thoughts is that Azriel has ONLY thought about his pleasure. Not hers.
Tumblr media
Here is his chat with Rhysand later in the bonus chapter. We have the confession in Azriel's POV that he hasn't thought about Elain past the fantasies he pleasured himself to. He has not thought about their future. He has not thought about the repercussions that will happen if something does happen with Elain and Azriel. (Yes there will be repercussions. And while Rhysand has told Feyre, Elain will be safe in the Night Court if she does reject the bond. There is still the possibility of fallout in other courts. Namely, Autumn and Day.)
Tumblr media
Rhysand asks Azriel, "What about Mor?" to which he ignores the question and then refers to Elain as "the third". Once again, proving that he doesn't think about Elain's needs but only himself and what he wants. (spoiler alert. He wants a mate) Azriel even admits during this bonus chapter that he just wanted one time and nothing more. It would be done after one time. Once again proving he hasn't thought about what ELAIN wants. Now I'm going to bring in the Nessian bonus chapter and compare. I see a lot of people say there is a lot of comparison between Azriel's chapter and Nessian's. This Nessian chapter is from ACOMAF.
Tumblr media
This text comes from the Nessian bonus chapter. Cassian and Nesta are in her room. It's important to note as well, it's canon that Cassian and Nesta are mates (since some people (????????) like to say they aren't (????)
Tumblr media
Added gif cause if you can't see Nessian being mates don't waste your breath with me, cause I won't be hearing it. Anyways, We know from this scene that Nesta and Cassian's banter has a lot to do with Cassian trying to get under Nesta's skin. By saying things he knows will get her flustered. Earlier in the scene Cassian had asked if Nesta had ever been with a male, to which Cassian uses to his advantage to get under Nesta's skin. We also know that Cassian pull to Nesta is because they are mates. (Just as Rhysand had a pull on Feyre when she was only human)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this, we see Nesta remembering the day Tomas almost SA Nesta and she is remembering it, her scent gives her away to which Cassian notices and he becomes enraged. He wants to know who. So how does this pull back together to Lucien's thoughts on Elain? Both of these males are concerned for their MATES. Both of them put their emotions to the side of what they WANT (touching, tasting, ravishing in any way) because they know their mate doesn't need or want any of that in those moments. They can put aside their emotions for the well-being of their mate. Whereas Azriel, can't even say Elain's name when he is questioned on his feelings for her. Whereas Azriel hasn't even thought past the thought of his fantasies of Elain. To end this post I want to end it with something a friend said to me, which completely and perfectly sums everything up, "Lucien's lust towards Elain lasts for just a moment, a brief few words, and then it's over, he reels in the urges. And this is preceded and then followed by thoughts of concern and care for her well-being. It's clear with the way that it's been written that the physical attraction he feels for her at this point is only stemming from the biological instincts of the mating bond, but that his concern for her as an individual who is currently in the throes of depression overcomes those instincts. It's comparable to how Cassian views Nesta in his bonus chapter. If we ever got Rhysand's POV during ACOMAF, his thoughts would be similar. Sjm is writing Lucien as a mated male who will get his happy ending with his mate, because he has put her first before himself, always."

All That Matters
For @c-e-d-dreamer and @cassianappreciationweek day 4. The request: Nessian. Any setting of your choosing, but how about something soft and sweet?
Nessian ✦ Rated M ✦ 867 words ✦ on AO3
CW: CANON-TYPICAL DEPICTION OF VIOLENCE
They sat on the river bank until the sun was fat and low in the sky, its orange fingers slinking through the willow boughs.
There was only the steady rise and fall of Cassian’s chest at her back, the warmth of him bleeding into her veins, and the I-love-you-s murmured back and forth at the same volume as the Sidra’s soft rush.
“Are you awake?” he whispered against her temple after a longer stretch of silence.
“For now,” Nesta replied, shifting to look at him. “But I’m not sure for how much longer.”
The reality of the last two days was finally settling into her bones now that the adrenaline had evaporated. The Rite, Briallyn, Nyx’s birth… exhaustion was lead seeping into her limbs and weighing them down, trying to draw her wholly into its grasp.
“Let’s go home then.” Cassian stood, then scooped her off the grass and into his arms. He launched them skyward and Nesta closed her eyes.
The next thing she knew, the world had stilled again and Cassian was saying something. “... know you’re tired, but I need you to try to eat something first.”
He sounded so gentle, so worried about her, and Nesta smiled as she opened her eyes. This male—capable of a ferocity to rival the gods, yet wearing his heart for all to see… “I love you,” Nesta told him again, just because she could and it was decadent.
The house delivered them enough food for a small army, and Nesta managed to put away a plate and a half before her yawns began arriving at a frequency that made eating inconvenient.
Cassian noticed, of course he did. “Let’s get you cleaned up and then we can sleep.”
Nesta considered protesting, a testament to the extent of her exhaustion considering that she hadn’t bathed in over a week, but knew she would regret going to bed layered in the residue of the Rite.
Cassian ran the bath as she sat on the edge of the counter and watched him move about the room. He helped her out of her clothes, his touch mindful of the bruises still littering her skin. He joined her in the bath, carefully maneuvering her tired limbs until she was leaning back against him again.
With a soft cloth, he worked honey-scented soap into a lather and began to clean away the grime. It was all Nesta could do to keep from dozing off.
But her closing eyelids snapped open when her mate took a shuddering breath that turned into a bitten off sob. Nesta turned around so quickly that she sent water careering over the sides.
“I could have killed you,” Cassian whispered in horror, looking down at his hands—they were trembling.
She took his shaking fingers in her own and squeezed. “You didn’t. You fought her.” Nesta shuddered as she remembered the sight of Cassian plunging that knife into his own chest rather than hers.
He shook his head, “I wanted to hurt you, Nes. It was…” he trailed off, looking to the side and squeezing his eyes shut.
A crystalline droplet streaked down his stubbled cheek and Nesta caught it with her thumb, coaxing him to face her.
“You weren’t yourself. That feeling wasn’t you—it was Briallyn and the Crown.”
The pain in his hazel eyes echoed through her and she drew him into her arms, holding him as tightly as she could.
“I thought…” Cassian drew a deep breath and held it, blowing it out slowly. “I thought I might never see you again. When I arrived at Emerie’s and you were missing, the smell of those males, of the drugs…” he shivered, putting his nose to her neck and taking another controlled breath.
“I thought I might have lost you and then to see you on that mountain, to be a puppet, forced to watch myself try to harm you without knowing if I could resist it… gods, Nesta, I was so scared.”
He lost his grip on the rhythm of his lungs, breaths turning shallow again.
“You did resist her, Cassian. That’s the only thing that matters.” Nesta traced patterns on his back and around the base of his wings as she held him.
The house kept the water at a steady temperature even as their fingers wrinkled. Eventually, the tide of emotion Cassian had clearly been holding back receded. They took turns helping each other wash.
A tired yet comfortable silence settled between them as they climbed out of the bath, hastily dried off, and then collapsed into her bed.
In the darkness, her mouth found Cassian’s, and she kissed him, pouring everything she felt into the touch: relief, gratitude, and more love than Nesta had ever imagined herself to be capable of.
Her friends and family were safe and healthy. She had her mate, and her home. There were many unresolved problems, sure, but they would still be there in the morning.
All Nesta cared about now was the steady beat of Cassian’s heart beneath her ear. His even breaths filled the quiet, starlit room and Nesta’s lungs slowed their pace to match as she finally allowed reality to drift as dreamless sleep embraced her.

Which scenes from acotar- acosf with Nesta are your favorites? 👀
Thank you for this ask, anon! This will be super fun to list out all of my favorite Nesta scenes from the ACOTAR books.
ACOTAR
"Tell me everything that happened." - When Feyre returns to her family halfway through the book, and we learn Tamlin's glamour didn't work on Nesta, and Feyre starts to understand Nesta's inner fire in a way she hadn't before. This set of scenes launched Nesta right on to my list of favorite characters - they are pure fire.
Feyre teaches Nesta to paint - This is a brief but, to me, utterly beautiful moment amid the set of scenes I listed above. It's when Nesta asks Feyre to teach her to paint, and in particular it's the moment when they emerge from where they had been painting together and both are covered in paint and charcoal, even as it's clear Nesta isn't very good at it but she wanted to try anyway, with her sister. Some day I want to commission an artist to draw Feyre and Nesta in this moment of ACOTAR. It fills my familial heart right up every time I read it.
ACOMAF
"Wings and Embers" bonus chapter - When I first read this bonus chapter, the way Nesta's pov in this extended scene made me feel seen by words on the page, in a way I never had felt seen before, is something I cherish.
When the human queens visit the Archeron estate - Nesta makes a passionate and uncharacteristically vulnerable plea to the queens to protect the human lands south of Prythian, which leads to Cassian promising to protect the humans even if the queens will not. It's another beautiful example of Nesta being vulnerable in a public way, and it moves me every time I read it.
"The hellcat now, if you'll be so kind." - When the King of Hybern orders Nesta to be pushed into the Cauldron and forcibly Made Fae. This entire scene is devastating and traumatic. But watching Nesta fight back with the rage we first glimpse in "Wings and Embers" makes this an absolute standout Nesta scene for me. The finger point at Hybern and his unnerved reaction are everything to me.
ACOWAR
Scenes when Nesta is training with Amren - I always loved these and even though my present canonical feelings about Amren are mixed to poor, the way these scenes brought out a side of Nesta we hadn't seen yet make them special to me.
The meeting of the High Lords - Both during it, when Nesta as the Night Court's new Emissary to the Human Lands makes a public and, again, incredibly vulnerable case to those assembled that the humans are worth protecting, and also the scene just after the meeting when Nesta senses the Cauldron and Cassian believes her without question, which is just one of many of the embarrassment of riches we get in this book when it comes to Nessian.
When Nesta scries for the Cauldron with stones and bones - Everything about this scene is chef's kiss, but especially the Nessian dynamic in it.
Nesta screaming for Cassian during the battle against Hybern - This doesn't need an explanation, does it? As we learn later, it's the moment Cassian realizes they are mates. It is everything.
Cassian lifting Nesta to greet Drakon and the legions he brought with him, and the arrival of Papa Archeron - This scene, also during the battle, means so much to me that it's depicted in the first ever artwork I commissioned.
Nessian's stand against the King of Hybern - the way they fight together and are willing to die together sets me alight whenever I read it, and it's always fascinating to me that SJM manages to show us this scene from within Feyre's pov, who isn't even present for it.
Nesta and her father - His last words to her.....ACOSF shows just how important and complicated this moment is for Nesta, and it's for those same reasons this scene is so important to me.
Nesta kills the king - I love that Elain is the one who appears and makes the first blow on this kill, and that when Nesta finishes the job she lifts the king's head like the badass that she is. There is such trauma and rage in this moment and, again, seeing that baldly on the page is transformative for me every time I read it. Related to this moment is a little while later when the Archeron sisters walk past the King of Hybern's corpse, and Nesta spits on it. So raw, so perfect.
ACOFAS
Nesta's pov - After her fight with Cassian, the small snippet we get in Nesta's pov when she returns to her apartment, locks her doors, and completely dissociates in despair. It is so painful and raw, but again there is something about this scene that also makes me feel seen, especially heading into ACOSF.
ACOSF
(I need to do these rapid fire because, if I give an explanation for each one, this post will take forever to write; they also may be listed out of order, my apologies for that)
The Prologue - Nesta in the Cauldron from her pov
Opening scenes in Nesta's pov where we finally learn what she's been going through
Nesta's nightmare after her first try at scrying
Nesta successfully scrying for the Mask (when the room turns cold and Cassian kisses her back to herself after using her power)
Nesta fighting the kelpie in the Bog of Oorid and then reuniting with Cass and Az
The first time Nesta wields a sword
Ch. 50 - Nesta and Cassian by the lake after their hike through the Sleeping Mountains
Nesta's fight against Lanthys in the Prison
Nesta bringing Cassian to her family's cottage (this scene is absolutely standout for me)
Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie making friendship bracelets together
When Gwyn gives Nesta and Emerie her Solstice gift to them ("We're in a book." "Our stories are worth telling." *sobs*)
Nesta working through her PTSD response to the sound of fire and then the House of Wind's Solstice gift to her in the heart of the House
Nesta dancing at the Solstice ball (when this leaked ahead of the book's release, I sobbed at seeing a glimpse of Nesta healed and joyful)
Ch. 58 - Cassian giving Nesta the Symphonia, her response, and Nessian finally yielding to each other and their mating bond solidifying
Nesta mastering herself during her fight with Cassian about their mating bond and choosing not to hurt him with her words
Nesta, Emerie, and Gwyn fighting off a group of random Illyrians during the Blood Rite like a single Valkyrie unit
Nesta sending Emerie and Gwyn to the summit of Ramiel and holding the Pass of Enalius
Nesta erupting with the power of the Cauldron
Nesta's conversation with the Mother while wearing the Mask during the birth of Nyx
Nesta visiting her father's grave at the very end of the book

It went right over my head when I read it before but it’s wild to think you were an IC fan before 🤯
Tumblr media
Some of the awful years.
Y’all will flip at this, but here were my thoughts on the Acotar cast when I was fresh in the fandom.
Rhysand- Liked him, didn’t feel as bad for him as others did but I knocked that down to me just straight up not being attracted to him. I started hating him in Acosf tho. I hadn’t read Acosaf because I thought it a waste of time. But if I had seen those scenes before Silver flames then I would’ve probably hated him sooner.
Feyre- I thought she was really fucking annoying. Especially in her scenes with Nesta. Not much can be said for her because Feyre was more of a device to see through. But I would be the last to advocate for her. Obviously that has changed drastically.
Morrigan- Liar. First thing that comes to mind. She seemed like a white girl who peaked in highschool so I just didn’t like her.
Amren- She was my favourite character second to Nesta. Solely for the reason we now had a morally grey character that actually acted like an unapologetically bad person when she wanted to. This has severely changed. Also literally two lines into her introduction I was screaming Valg King. Amren is a Valg King no one can change my mind. That part hasn’t changed.
Cassian- I was a die hard Cassian fan. I loved this man. I swear to God I would have gone to war for him. I was also die hard nessian. Obviously that has also changed, for the better in my opinion.
Azriel- I cannot physically express how much I hated Azriel. He was quite literally my least favourite character, I wanted him dead. I was hoping every single page that he would be killed off. He was there for vibes and vibes only. Since Azris I am a changed man, but sometimes I just can’t stand him.
Nesta- My Queen. My Lady. My wife. My mirror. She made me feel seen and heard. I love this woman and I always will.
Elain- No opinions on her. I figured pretty quickly she would be a bigger factor later on but I had no opinions on her. I am very pro Elain now, but in canon I just don’t really trust SJM with her. Which is also why my only solid ship with her is Gywnlain. I am very anti Elriel, always was.
Lucien- My heart and soul. I was obsessed with this man. I wanted to wrap him up and hold him close. Still do.
Eris- I didn’t understand the hype in Acowar but come silver flames and I was diving deep into this man. Trying to undo every cryptic word. I developed a very deep love for him. One that has only grown.
Tamlin- Felt sorry for him, but overall I had no strong opinions. I really wanted Acotar back. In the first book I would have probably given up a kidney for him, then it went down slowly. In Acowar however I was defending this man left and right. By Acosf I wanted more Tamlin.
Then I started to deep dive into the characters and their arcs. This was before I joined Tumblr. And the more I read the more convinced I was that in the next book the IC was going to have a falling out because their dynamics made no sense to me. They looked like they were slowly breaking, and Rhysand was very shortly put on my anti list.
But I never made a big fuss about my thoughts because if I did I got attacked really fuckin quickly.
Then I joined Tumblr and found a great community where I could hate and be supported.
Love you guys to death. Thanks to all of you I get to be in my Pro Tamlin, anti IC world and I am so glad I get to be here.
Edit- I was also extremely closeted when I first read Acotar and that definitely had its affect on my opinions on some of the characters.

1) stop spoiling HOFAS. Jesus Christ.
2) the Bryceriel ship went up against a pre-existing relationship where the two characters (Bryce and Hunt) actually have feelings for each other, and actually like spending time with each other as both friends and lovers. You know, all the things Elain and Lucien canonically have no current signs of.
3) Lucien having a sad backstory doesn’t entitle him to Elain’s affections or love. It’s not about what he needs, or what the fandom thinks Elain needs (e.g. she needs to accept the mating bond, or she needs sunshine, or she needs to leave the Night Court), it’s about what Elain wants. And all signs (over 4 whole books now) suggest that’s not Lucien. It’s Azriel. And Elain is a seer - I’m trusting her judgement on this one.
4) I wouldn’t be so content to mock other people’s ships when you yourself have spent every. single. day. of the past 2-3 years going on and on about how Elucien is endgame, and that you know better than everyone else on the matter. You could be wrong too, you know?
Stop spoiling HOFAS?
You mean stop writing "Post contains HOFAS spoilers" followed by a Keep Reading button which hides the rest because you're the (insert choice word here) who chooses to continue reading the post when you're trying to avoid spoilers? Also, if you're the one who keeps using proof of a tainted Elucien bond because of the Cauldron then NEWS FLASH, you are already reading spoilers because that's a bullshit E/riel theory that they've suddenly come up with the leak of HOFAS. And...feel free to BLOCK my account if what I post is bothering you so much. I'm not sure why you're so desperate to keep my blog visible when it upsets you to this degree.
2. My point was that Bryce / Az shippers were convinced that because Hunt and Bryce's bond was described different than other ships, it had to be fake and Bryce's real mate was Az. Just like E/riels have a million and one theories for why the Elucien bond isn't real. But just as it was proven that Bryce and Hunts bond was the real deal regardless of it's differences to other bonds in description, Elucien's bond is the real deal too. Just like Feysand, just like Nessian. You still have absolutely NO PROOF that it was manipulated in any way especially when there are multiple examples in the ACOTAR series and CC3 explaining that when a bond snaps, it can be scented. Not just when it's accepted. 3. Lucien doesn't deserve Elain because of his tragic backstory but from a logical literary standpoint, authors do not write the progression of events that SJM has written for Lucien only to have his mate reject him in the end. The author chose to write it into her book that they are mates, has written him to be entirely respectful to the gift they share, and continues hitting us over the head with their compatibility. Elain is not real, you do know that, correct? It's not about what Elain wants but what the author wants for her. Nesta WANTED to drink and fuck random fae. Was that the best thing for her? Or did the author want better for her? So just because Elain wanted to hook up with Az doesn't meant that decision is being made for the right reasons or what Elain actually wants long term. I think it's a RIOT that you think Elain wanting to have a hook up with Az while refusing to reject her bond is a bigger clue to her future story than things like Elain always being by the sunniest window, that Elain wearing black, no matter how much she claimed to be part of the NC....it sucked the life from her, that SPRING had been made for someone like Elain, that Elain's scent was a promise of Spring. Oh, you mean the Seer powers Elain confirms she hasn't used? That her good boy Az hasn't offered to help her with? Yeah, great call banking her entire future on those powers. Seriously, step away from your ship for half a minute and pay attention to the fucking book outside of the Az and Elain moments. 4. I'm sorry. If I actually knew who you were and I looked at your page, do you think I'd find how you liked posts of E/riels mocking Lucien and the Elucien ship? Are you honestly coming on to my page and acting like what I do is so much worse than the people you follow? What I'm "mocking" is E/riels going around claiming they have canon evidence that the Elucien bond has been proven tainted and I'm fairly sure I'm allowed to call out how ridiculous that is. I acknowledge I could be wrong Elucien. I don't think I am but until the book is written anything is possible. But have you considered that you all could be very wrong about E/riel?

We all know there is not a single chance Nessian will just stop being Nessian, canonically speaking, and despite all the jokes and reblogs about Nesta dumping him and running away, I don't really want them to end like that (I feel in love with them for a reason, duh). But what I do want is for Cassian to get his head out of Rhysand's ass step up his game because BOY he really sucks at times. And I know he can be so much better than this that. He was That Man during ACOWAR so he can be That Man in whatever book will come next, as many as they will be.
