The beat and thrum of the music vibrated through the ground and into the tall glass champagne flute in your hand as you stepped out onto the empty balcony. The chill, salty night air wafting up from the Sidra was a relief from the massive pulsing crowd of guests at the River House. Feyre and Rhys were graciously hosting Starfall this year, and requested a special performance from their favorite violinist. You had been practicing for weeks, needing to perfect your self-composed piece before playing it in front of the hundreds of expectant Fae present tonight. Although confident in your skills, having played the instrument since you were a young girl, performing on Starfall for a high-standards crowd was out of your comfort zone.

Thank Gods for Cassian, you thought, relishing the cool breeze gently grazing the bare skin of your thigh, arms and neck. You two sat together on the roof of the House night after night, Cassian listening to you practice while offering sweet encouragement and boasting with pride as your skilled hands strummed and plucked your beautifully carved violin.

As if he read your mind, his familiar fresh, woody scent wafted from inside, carried out on the night breeze. He didn’t need to announce his arrival—you knew the sound of his footsteps, his cadence, his stride. Cassian approached you from behind, grabbing your hips and running his nose along the length of your neck. “You were incredible tonight, my love. Everyone is so impressed, and I get to tell them all about how talented my mate is,’ he murmured between soft, loving kisses along your neck and down your exposed collarbone.

You had been mated to Cassian for almost a decade now, yet he still gave you butterflies. To the world, he was the Army General of the Night Court. But to you…he was your sweet, kind, gentle mate. You leaned back against his rigid, muscular body, sculpted from years of brutal war and Illyrian training. Despite the strappy four-inch heels, Cassian’s massive frame still towered behind you.

“I’m still sweating, I was so nervous,” you mumbled, closing your eyes and grabbing his warm, calloused hands, bringing them across your stomach and lacing your fingers with his. Strands of his silky hair tickled your cheeks as he kept peppering you with kisses and praise. “I couldn’t even tell. You played your piece perfectly. All your long nights of practice paid off.”

You dropped your head against his chest, savoring the quiet, intimate moment away from the Starfall party. You both silently watched the thousands of glowing stars flying past, lighting up the sky with streaks of blue and green and purple. You turned to face your mate, craning your neck to look up at his gorgeous, rugged face, illuminated by the stars. Cassian was dressed to the nines in a black suit that left little to the imagination, tiny stars embroidered at the cuff of his jacket and the ankles of his pants. His hair was tied back in a bun, and his silver hoop earring sparkled under the moonlight. He looked amazing, even if you knew how uncomfortable he was and how badly he wanted to change back into his leathers. “You don’t look too bad yourself,” he chuckled, likely in response to the waves of admiration he felt slamming down the bond. You donned a silky black dress cut of similar cloth, with a plunging neck and backline, and a long slit up your left thigh, identical silver and gold stars embroidered on the draping train. Your hair was curled and pinned half up to reveal your sharp décolletage and the smoky, dark makeup accentuated your gorgeous sensual eyes. You and Cassian looked like an absolute dream standing together: a Cauldron-blessed match.

You met his blazing hazel eyes with a pouting face. Cassian knew what you wanted without you having to say it. His low, soft chuckle rumbled deep in his chest, and he scooped you up in one easy motion. You wrapped your arms around his strong neck, playing with the soft hair that had fallen loose from his bun. With a beat of his magnificent wings, you were shooting up into the glowing night sky. Starfall continued far below you, but you were ready to spend the rest of the night snuggled up next to your mate.

You leaned back on the edge of the balcony railing at the House of Wind, Cassian setting you down gently and immediately crouching down to unlace and unbuckle your tight heels. You winced in pain as you stepped onto the warm, stone floor, your feet aching and throbbing from the night of dancing and mingling in Mor’s stilettos. “I told you it was a bad idea,” Cass murmured under his breath.

“I just wanted to look good for you,” you cooed with a wicked grin, nudging him with your bare knee. Cass planted a soft kiss against your skin before standing up to his full height, pulling you in at the waist. “You’re just as beautiful to me in your pajamas as you are in this little number,” he breathed against your ear, tugging at the silky fabric of your dress, hanging to your mid-back to reveal your tall, muscled torso. You got up on your tippy-toes to kiss his cheek, raking your fingers through his hair. Cass scooped you up again, your heels in one hand, and carried you up effortlessly to your bedroom.

The bath was already running with steaming hot water, and Cass sprinkled in your favorite eucalyptus oil while you stripped out of the silky gown. You hissed as you dipped into the bath opposite your mate, who was already savoring the near-boiling temperature. He grabbed your foot as you settled in, slowly massaging the ache and soreness out of your tired limbs. A moan escaped your lips at his gentle yet firm touch and you tossed your head back against the stone edge of the bath. You shut your tired eyes for a few seconds, and finally with a deep sigh lifted your head back up to meet his sultry, hazel gaze, your favorite feature of his, sparkling in the dim faelight lining the walls of the bathroom. You couldn’t help your soft smile—your heart burned with endless love and admiration for him, and you would spend the rest of eternity making sure he knew how much he meant to you. When you first met Cass as a Valkyrie-in-training, he always joked about being dumb bastardly war scum. His words broke your heart—you could never understand how someone as kind, noble, and fierce as him could think about himself that way. So ever since you two became mates, you made it a point always to cherish and praise him, vowing never to let him feel less-than again. You were more than lucky to have him in your life; you felt that way even before mating with him.

“I love you, you know?” Cassian tilted his head in response with a lovestruck expression, and suddenly your core felt warm from the love radiating down the bond. You got up from the tub despite his protests, and wrapped a towel around yourself, taking a seat behind him. Cass leaned his head back and groaned as you scrubbed his scalp with shampoo, taking care to be gentle with his silky, long tresses. You rinsed his hair with the warm bath water, softly raking your long, manicured nails against his scalp and kissing his temple softly.

“I love you too, so much,” he finally muttered back, his voice guttural. You playfully splashed water at his face. “You’re only saying that after the scalp massage.” Cass chuckled as he finally stepped out of the bath, drying himself off as you carefully dried his wings. His deep laugh, reverberating in your bones, was the sound of home.

You grabbed his hand and led him into bed, cuddling up against his broad, muscular chest. Sleep demanded your attention, but you fought it as much as you could, relishing in your mate’s scent. “I’m so lucky to have you,” you whispered against him, tracing his dark Illyrian tattoos with a soft finger. Cassian stroked long lines up and down your back, kissing your hair as sleep washed over you, sending you into a deep slumber, cuddled up against your mate.

It can be quite challenging to justify the notion that Elain's initial discomfort with Lucien is a valid reason to dismiss the potential of Elucien's relationship. It seems evident that SJM is guiding them toward a trope that many people find appealing. This aligns with the polite "I-don't-want-to-deal-with-you" vibe reminiscent of "Pride and Prejudice" and the current surge of interest in regency romance.

It's a regency setting, and SJM is purposefully placing them in a popular trope. SJM emphasizes that Lucien is a High Lord's son and that Elain enjoyed being a part of High Society until it was taken from her.

This discomfort is set up for a potential twist, much like when Darcy asked Mr. Bennet for Elizabeth's hand in marriage, which surprised many of her family, including her.

Elain as Darcy and Lucien as Elizabeth. It’ll be the mating bond instead of the proposal.

Continuing where they left off at the end of ACOWAR, with Elain blurted to Lucien to live in Velaris and him agreeing, wouldn't create the gripping, tension-filled, and angst-ridden story that many fans crave.

Lucien has shown that he can walk away from more challenging situations and manage his instincts, making it perplexing why Elain hasn't rejected the bond.

Lucien has given Elain plenty of chances to do so, all while maintaining a respectful distance to allow her to make a decision without pressure.

The argument that "she's uncomfortable with him" is invalidated when considering the other couples in the TOG, Feysand, Nessian, and Quinlar, all of whom had uncertain or rockier starts.

We understand the reasons why Elain and Azriel are intentionally avoiding each other, and we know it's a choice they've made.

However, the mystery lies in why Elain and Lucien are keeping their distance. This appears to be a deliberate decision on the part of the author and she has planned an entire book to explore and explain this particular aspect of their relationship.

Considering the content available in the book accessible to the general public, it's apparent that Lucien continues to regard Elain with longing, even when he attempts to conceal his feelings. His decision to attend Starfall, which Elain would also be attending, three months after the Solstice implies that she's not so uncomfortable in his presence as to avoid being around him entirely.
