#netflix: NEO YOKIO SEASON TWO WATCH NOW

People who moralize (is that the word?) Piracy are so fucking annoying.
I don't have the money to spend on a million streaming services. The ones that I can afford, I have, the ones I can't, I don't.
Onyx Equinox is in like my top ten, maybe five, shows ever. It sounds like we may get a season two under a different studio. I would love to financially support the creator, at the very least by watching it properly, which i do now, but if it moves, I just cannot promise that I will.
Neo Yokio. Where my pfp is from. My favorite piece of media ever. I love everything about it. The comedy, the cast, the worldbuilding, the writers, the music. It's inspired me so much. It made me laugh during my worst. I am so passionate about this series. It deserves so much more praise. But it's a Netflix original, and I don't have Netflix.
KinnPorsche. It's frustrating being behind, but I physically can't pay extra for the up to date/uncensored episodes. If one day I snap and look for them elsewhere, I'm not gonna feel bad about it, I'm gonna be relieved. Because it's not because I don't want to support the art. It's that i literally can't.
And I mean, for KinnPorsche, that season two is already confirmed, unlike my other examples, which need the support more, and which I love more.
I haven't seen much of this guilt tripping about paying for shows in the fandoms for Onyx Equinox and Neo Yokio. I mean, if you're in the Neo Yokio fandom, you're predisposed to hating Netflix and capitalism. But I have seen this nonsense in the KinnPorsche fandom, and just tempts me even more.

December End of the Year Media Madness!
It’s a new month and a new year! And what a crazy month it was what with Tumblr imploding and all. But I’ll still throw this on here just because I’ll be on this site until it literally boots me out. But I do have a twitter now…@metalandmagi where I’m also barely active at all.
Anyway, why make top 10 lists for the entire year when I can just ramble about all the media I consumed this month? There’s only a marginal amount of holiday things on here by my standards!
November media
Movies!
Give me some credit there’s only four Christmas movies on here.
Won’t You Be My Neighbor?: A documentary about Mr. Rogers starting with the birth of the television show to his death. This is the fluffiest most heartwarming thing I could have possibly picked to watch on Christmas, and I encourage everyone, even people who hate documentaries and/or never grew up with Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, to watch it. There’s a lot of important messages about acceptance, dealing with tragedy, and mental health that people can learn from and feel good about. Not to mention how he completely revolutionized children’s television. So yeah, he was awesome.10/10
Spider-man Into the Spider-verse: When a rip between dimensions is opened, a bunch of different spider themed superheroes from every comic fan’s wet dreams all get together to close it. Guys I’m not that big of a Spider-man fan, but dang this movie was a ton of fun. I came for the amazing visual effects and stayed for the amazing...everything else. The music, the performances, and the story were all top notch. Also I now have a new favorite Nick Cage role. If you thought the trailer made the animation look interesting, it was just the tip of the iceberg because it is the most visually interesting movie I’ve seen in the last three years. I strongly suggest any fan of animation...or even any fan of great stories and movies in general go see it even if you’re not that big on Spider-Man. Now I’m demanding a Spider-verse Aunt May movie because I have so many questions! And the post credits scene was the best out of any Marvel movie. Period. 10,000/10
Tumblr media
The Wiz (2015 musical): I should start making a section for musicals or plays instead of just lumping it in with the movies. It’s the Wizard of Oz...but cool. I’ve never seen any iteration of The Wiz and it seems like I’m constantly hearing about it. So I watched the 2015 version of the 1975 Broadway musical that NBC aired. And yeah it’s good. There were some great performances. But I wasn’t very impressed with the songs themselves, and it’s not really the same without a dog along for the ride, but whatever. 7.5/10
Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle: The surprisingly fun reboot/sequel thing of Jumanji where four teenagers get stuck in a video game that follows every “stuck in a video game” trope you can imagine but actually does it well. It’s a sweet, funny romp through the jungle with some great comedic performances. I really don’t have much to say about it except that this movie is better than it has any right to be. 8/10
The Christmas Chronicles: Two children stow away on Kurt Russell’s, I mean Santa’s sleigh and go on a dangerous, balls to the wall adventure throughout Chicago trying to save Christmas or something. After everyone started talking about how crazy this Netflix movie is I had to watch it to verify if it is indeed as wild as they said. And yes...yes it is. It is so laughably ridiculous and questionable that it’s impossible to actually hate. The elves are some unholy mixture of minions and gremlins, one of the children is a literal felon that no one is concerned about, and Kurt Russell is super into the role but has some sort of thing about fat-shaming Santa. I just...have so many questions! But it was certainly a trip, so I’d have to recommend it just so you too can witness the insanity. -10 “savvy, straight-talking St. Nicks”/10
Arthur Christmas: No, it’s not a Christmas special related to the aardvark cartoon! This is the 2011 animated movie that no one remembers exists. Santa’s clumsy but enthusiastic son Arthur must deliver a forgotten present in less than two hours while the rest of his family deals with some Arrested Development style family drama. This is by far the most underrated Christmas movie of all time; even I didn’t realize it was actually good until I watched it for the first time in 2016! The fun road-trip style plot and the entertaining characters were victims of bad marketing. Arthur is hilariously endearing, and there was so much heart and effort put into it that I can find new things to notice every time I watch it. Not to mention the amazingly animated opening spy sequence! And also Mrs. Claus is secretly a total badass and Bryony the elf is the coolest female character in a Christmas movie ever. The movie’s message of old vs new is nothing we haven’t seen before, but I really don’t care because at the heart of it all, it’s about making people happy on Christmas. If you’re like me and just assumed this movie would suck...or didn’t know it exists, please give it a chance. It’s not perfect, but it’s worth seeing. 9/10
Neo Yokio Pink Christmas: Yes, it’s the Christmas special for Neo Yokio. No I cannot accurately describe it with mere words. There’s a rich bachelor gift exchange, demon possession, and pompous French aunts slinging insults at each other. It is unironically my favorite holiday episode of a show ever, and to me it’s the best Christmas special ever made. I thought I was prepared for the absolute bat-shit ride I would go on, but no...I wasn’t even close. At this point I don’t know if it’s written like this on purpose or if some divine twist of fate made the executives believe this is truly brilliant television. Either way, it is a masterpiece in its own right. There’s even a somewhat intriguing plot and a message about gift giving and capitalism under all the crazy! If you haven’t jumped down the rabbit hole yet, I implore you to watch the insanity that is Neo Yokio and follow it up with Pink Christmas because it will truly make your holiday season. 100,000 demon DNA drugs out of 100,000!
Tumblr media
Die Hard: Nothing says Christmas like terrorists taking over a skyscraper and Bruce Willis having to take them all down by himself. Yeah...so I’ve never seen Die Hard before, but this is one of those movies that is so famous that I felt like I’d already absorbed everything important through cultural osmosis. And even though it’s pretty good, I would have liked it better if I didn’t know what was going to happen. My only real complaint is that I think it goes on way too long. More than anything it just made me sad to remember that Alan Rickman is gone. And it bothers me so much that John McClane goes through this building that’s under construction WITHOUT SHOES! 8/10
Books!
The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis: The 4th/6th book in the Chronicles of Narnia, in which Eustace Scrubb and his classmate Jill Pole go to the underworld to find King Caspian’s long lost son. Even though my children- the Pevensies aren’t in it, I actually think this book is my favorite of the series so far. Jill and Eustace are both sassy enough to play off each other, Puddleglum absolutely hilarious, and the book actually has a clear cut plot! It reads much more like a Greek myth than a children’s fairy tale since there aren’t nearly as many of Lewis’s trademark author interjections, and you know...it’s a literal journey to the underworld. And can I just say that it’s super refreshing to have an author write two main characters WITH ZERO ROMANTIC INTENTIONS! Especially since they’re freaking children! Now I just wish Disney had continued the movies even more! 9/10
Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare: I’m going to do this with only minor spoilers. It’s the final book in The Dark Artifices trilogy. Will Emma and Julian break the parabatai bond? Will the reflection of the modern day American government- I mean the Cohort/ the Clave fuck up the relationships between Shadowhunters and Downworlders forever? You’ll have to suffer like the rest of us to find out! In my opinion, 99% of this book is amazing, but in the last 50 pages there are some...bullshit ways of solving problems. Like everything that went down with the Cohort in Idris. Not to mention we’ve been so invested in the parabatai curse and how Julian and Emma’s bond would go down and...let’s just say the resolution was way too easy. And if you thought Clare’s other finales were jam packed, you ain't seen nothin’ yet. My copy is 880 pages and there was still more stuff that I wanted to happen...like any sort of scene between Dru and Ash...or an ending between Kit and Ty that doesn’t make me want to cry (the Wicked Powers is going to be brutal). But the rest of that 99% is mind-blowing! There’s so much good I can say that it mostly outranks anything I didn’t like...I mean we finally got a Malec wedding and a proper polyamorous relationship for the Angel’s sake! It may be my least favorite of her finales by default but it was still a fun ride! 9/10
TV shows!
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018): An elite soldier finds a sword that can transform her into a super buff magical girl who helps princesses take down the forces of evil. It’s a reboot of the 1980s cartoon, and holy crap it’s AMAZING! I have a whole new group of children to adopt, each episode is entertaining in its own way, and there’s so...many...good...ships! And it gives Steven Universe a run for its money with the care that went into making every character a different kind of warrior, which I love because the cast is 99% female. My only real complaint is that I never warmed up to Catra because she wasn’t particularly sympathetic to me from the beginning. But I understand why some people love her. If you love well crafted adventurous character driven cartoons and haven’t watched it yet WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?  10/10
Tumblr media
Nailed It Holiday: Yes, my favorite baking show (and by that I mean the only baking show I watch) has a holiday season out on Netflix, in which newbie bakers are tasked with making incredibly professional desserts with a very short time limit. And whoever makes the best treat gets 10,000 dollars. I’ve talked about this show before in my June media madness, and I don’t know what it is but I’m so addicted to it. 10/10
Brooklyn nine-nine (season 5): Come on we all know the cop sitcom. It’s the best sitcom. Just in general it’s the best. Great characters that subvert expectations, great humor, and a lot of heart. I’ve known that this show is supposed to be amazing for years, but I only started watching it a few months ago. And since I couldn’t find season 5 anywhere...I got a Hulu subscription just to watch it before season 6 comes out. That’s how good this show is. 10/10
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (season 2): Our favorite underdog comedian is back, and she’s slowly gaining popularity and doing...stuff. Like going on tour. And hanging out with Zachary Levi. Yes, this season is great, but my problem with this series is that every character aside from Midge and Susie are the fucking worst, especially the parents. Midge’s parents suck, Joel’s parents suck, Midge and Joel are appropriately neglectful parents for the time period...I could go on. And it’s not even in a funny way; like it’s just disgusting to watch these power dynamics. Not to mention how old the comedic bits for the parents get (how many times can we hear about Joel needing to date or Midge needing to get married?!) Yes, I realize that we’re supposed to be annoyed AND YES I realize that this is a product of culture and how society was, but none of the parents have any redeeming qualities. In episode one, we’re led to believe that Midge’s parents will grow and change through the season and they never do! At least there are moments where Joel can kind of be redeeming and expand on his actual character before he reverts back to being an asshole. Anyway, my thoughts are pretty much the same as the first season. It’s funny and interesting to watch, but it can be ridiculously frustrating when you hate almost all the characters!  8/10
Fuller House (season 4): Yes I do watch the ridiculous Netflix reboot of Full House. And yes, it is absolutely terrible! I really really hate it! But will I stop watching it? Let’s just say you can pry this pile of garbage from my cold dead hands. I don’t know if I’d call this a guilty pleasure or a hate watch type of show... it’s certainly not so bad it’s good territory like Neo Yokio...but Full House was pretty much my entire childhood. And yes, the original show is also not great. I loved it as a kid, and it was my first real exposure to a non-traditional family in live action, but yeah it doesn’t age well. What I’m trying to say is...I have no good reason for watching this.
I don’t mean to say that there’s nothing good about it, especially this season. They really back off on the more cringe-worthy catch phrases, Stephanie being aware of how stupid the writing is and constantly pointing it out is actually funny, their Christmas episode was surprisingly genuine, and they impressed me by actually make two female characters try and work through their difficulties instead of pitting them against each other for laughs. It has its moments, just like the original but definitely not enough to make up for the worst of it. Maybe this generation of children will like it the way lots of my generation used to like Full House...but yeah it’s awful, I hate it so much. -1 missing Tanner child out of 3
Voltron Legendary Defender (season 8) SPOILERS: It’s the final season of Netflix’s Voltron, and boy it was...something. I didn’t want to make this a big rant/defense of the show...but I feel like I have to highlight some things because this fandom is a shithole that refuses to see the good in anything.
There is so much good and so much...not good I can say about it, so here’s a couple things. I know this show didn’t go the direction anyone wanted, but that doesn’t make it bad. In addition to the stunning fight scenes and music, the performances this season were just amazing! I literally wanted to cry every other episode even though sometimes I didn’t know why the fuck something was happening. I don’t know how I feel about Honerva’s plan. I understand her motivation, but I was constantly questioning how we got from point A to point B... so yeah the plot and writing could be...weird at times. Also everyone seemed to have super pointy chins this season...
Spoiler alert: Not many of us wanted Lance and Allura to happen, but I truly believe it wasn’t done in a half assed way. At the very least, I appreciate that they had a genuine bond that developed over so many seasons. BECAUSE YES IT DID! Anyone who says they had no development or that it felt forced never paid attention. I wanted it to stay platonic; I wanted Klance to happen, but...I can’t be too mad at the writers because they at least tried. I still believe that Klance was endgame and the creators were forced to change the outcome of the show later on. AND YES LANCE DID GET A CHARACTER ARC! It may not have been the one we wanted to see, but I’m baffled that people think Lance living with his family, surrounded by people he loves-which is what he wanted all along- is not a happy ending. I just wish his relationship with Keith wasn’t pretty much ignored all season. But I believe Allura is his past that taught him to genuinely love and Keith is his future who will make Lance his “first choice”. And I’m not even gonna try to explain how I feel about Shiro and Allura’s endings because everything I feel is so complicated and layered. There is good and there is bad.
TLDR: This show teaches us that we’re stronger together, and I think the “fandom” completely missed the point because they do nothing but tear others down and refuse to look at things from other perspectives. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO NOT LIKE IT, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE AWAY OTHER PEOPLE’S ENJOYMENT AND BE A DICK ABOUT IT. It may not have been everything I wanted, but I’m glad I went on this ride. Besides, there are canonically infinite realities so there’s got to be a reality where all your dreams for the show come true. As a season, I’d say it’s a 7.5/10.

sorry for the awful awful awful pun.
Ezra Koenig, these days best known as host of Apple Music Beats 1 “radio” show Time Crisis (10/10 would recommend listening to btw (it’s on every second Sunday)), but also known as singer and writer in the band Vampire Weekend, is now also the creator of an anime series (I should mention that (at the moment) it’s debatable whether it’s a “true” anime or based on animes. Either way, it’s in the style of animes.) that will premiere on Netflix on September 22nd. The show’s called Neo Yokio and seems to be about a city (Neo Yokio) that seems perfect but obviously isn’t really. There’s demons and occultist (?) rituals and one man/boy to save the city. At least, that’s what I got from watching the trailer.
Confession: I’m not really into anime. Plenty of friends and acquaintances have tried getting me into it and given me long lists of animes I should watch but I never feel like it. And what’s the point of watching a series, any series, if you don’t feel like it? You probably won’t enjoy it anyway. But for some reason, I am kind of excited about watching Neo Yokio. Well for one, I usually like the stuff Ezra makes.
Here’s some other things I like about the trailer, that get me excited for the show itself:
the name: it’s a combination of New York and Tokio. Ezra’s basically from New York, Tokio is in the motherland of anime, both cities are huge and filled with skyscrapers and people looking to make their dreams come true. ALSO I just googled Neo Yokio and always helpful Google showed me some results for a 1987 anime called “Neo Tokyo”. Another layer. Like an onion? I’ll stop. (cf last bullet point)
Ezra worked on it with Jaden Smith, who voices the main character: in my mind they’re a slightly odd couple which makes the result of their collaboration all the more appealing.
the aesthetics: I’ve been watching a lot of Gossip Girl recently (2 seasons in a week (which is a lot for me)) and a few things in the trailer made me think of that show. The colours are nice, too. Some of the things reminded me of Ezra’s aesthetic or things he’s talked about on Time Crisis. I wonder if when he said he’d been doing some research in the library he was talking about researching stuff for Neo Yokio...
it has a certain humour about it, it’s not taking itself very seriously, which I love because being very serious is one of the things I don’t really like about anime. Also, just look at the “preppiness” around Vampire Weekend especially during their first two albums - that was also meant in a rather humourous and non-serious way, but not too blatantly. That preppy aesthetic also features in the trailer. Also, that nose bleed when the girl kisses the guy and he’s kind of embarassed? Like that’s not a stereotype. Another addition: the way they talk, Jude Law narrating the trailer, ... you cannot take this seriously. Which makes it so great. I don’t think It’s full of hipster irony, trying to make fun of what anime is. I’m also not saying it’s an intelligent masterpiece only few will understand because that’s also not true since that would make it a piece of hipster irony. It’s not just a parody either.
Who knows what it is, really. I don’t yet. But I’m going to watch it and then make my brother, who loves anime, watch it and see if he gets it. Will report on that.
Basically, I’m pretty excited. And hopefully LP4 will be coming soon, too...
Here’s the trailer:

________
Update: I LOVE NEO YOKIO JUST AS MUCH AS EXPECTED (WHICH IS A LOT). It is very much Ezra humour, so if you like Vampire Weekend and listen to Time Crisis, you’ll most likely get this show. If you think it’s dumb/horrible voice acting/there’s no proper character development, then I’m sorry if this sounds rude but you don’t get it. The way they talk is part of the humour, the little character development from Kaz is part of his character. He’s a pretentious rich dude, he needs some more time. This whole show needs more episodes. It feels unfinished, like there’s still more to be said. Like what the real problem with/in Neo Yokio is and what’s happened to Helena Saint Tessoro.
10/10 would recommend

another update of sorts: read this 2010 article on Vampire Weekend to get a better feel for what Neo Yokio’s deal is. It’ll help you understand what Ezra’s about and therefore understand his cartoon too.

I Started Trying To Replicate “What’s In A PV?” and I Ended With An Essay Comparing “Neo Yokio” and “Children of Ether”
I wish I could post this on /r/ anime but I’ve never posted on their before and after a brief rundown of the rules it seems like this would most likely be removed for not fitting their definition of anime. Still, I’d like to make everyone aware that when I call this property an “anime” I am referring to the fact that it is a part of the anime-inspired movement as defined by Mother’s Basement. (See his video titled “Avatar is an Anime: Fuck You, Fight Me)
So, “Neo Yokio”, a very obvious and not so clever allusion to Neo Tokyo. Where to begin? Well, within two days, this trailer has not received much attention, and those who have been talking about it are split on not whether it will be terrible, but whether it will be terrible in a good way, or terrible in a bad way, and by that they are referring to being nonredeemable, even through memes. After jumping into this two days late, I was only able to scan the comments underneath the trailer on Youtube, and I saw this split very prominent. However, I was surprised to find a few people who saw some worth in this series, that it may in fact be good- in a trashy but comedic way.
I think the main thing many people are missing from this show is that it’s a parody. If you do any few seconds of research, hell- even simply typing the show title into Google- you’ll instantly be shown several articles that all include the word “parody” in the title. So, we should already be aware the show won’t be taking itself seriously, which I think is good. The last time Netflix tried to make an anime inspired thing, which was less than a month ago, it turned out badly, almost as bad as everyone fears this series will be, un-memeable (I tried to avoid typing that, I really did) However, with what the trailer shows, I think this series will offer plenty in terms of comedy, as I don’t think the lines of dialogue we heard in the trailer in context will be as similar to Jaden Smith tweets as we are being led to believe. At the very least, there is hope that when put into context, they won’t intentionally sound cringey and forced as if to replicate the hilarity of his most famous tweets.
So, now I’d like to jump into the trailer, stealing a bit of Mother’s Basement’s “What in A PV?” format, although I am not as eloquent as him, and I’m not being sponsored by the network this series is being hosted/licensed on. Now, if I’ve learned anything from the Anime Youtube community, it’s that sometimes one shot can encapsulate a whole show. In Made in Abyss, the opening scene that drags the camera vertically up from the bottom of the abyss has been analyzed by many this season as a key example of this. The shot right before the title drops, I believe is this show’s rather crude version of that. When we are shown the two girls playing tennis, the reaction of the girl breaking her racket is supposed to be seen as strange and over dramatic to the extent that our curiosity is awakened. We are immediately supposed to be led to believe that the rest of the trailer will show us a rather over the top reactions made by characters, and the entire show will be similar in nature. But, when the shot freezes and starts playing Studio Ghibli like music over top the brush stroke stylized title drop, the contrast is supposed to leave us with more questions than answers.
This show is a parody, so it’s going to be packed with references. These two contrasting shots that follow one another are very much that, references. The mecha robot seen throughout the trailer does not imply that the show will be attempting to invoke the mecha genre in anyway, but it exists for purpose of being an allusion to that genre, as well as a spin on the robot butler trope. When I found people stating that they thought this show had no direction and was plain cringey, I was a little surprised. I wouldn’t go so far as to say this was a passion project, as I am not familiar with Ezra Koenig’s works or interests, but another Google search has revealed to me the show’s intent is to be “a postmodern collage of homages to classic anime, English literature, and modern New York fashion and culture”, as stated by Netflix themselves. This explains how we got from Neo Tokyo to Yokio (New York + Neo Tokyo, although some of the narration about the city reminds me more of New Orleans, but I digress)  But, I feel as though people are fearing this is going to end up being like this season’s “THE REFLECTION” in nature rather than something like a comedic “Children of Ether”.
For those of you who went to Anime Expo this year or attended one of the Anime Movie Night screenings or encore screenings during the summer, I can hear some of you finding disgust with my comparison there. For those who are unaware, “Children of Ether” is a Crunchyroll original series created by LeSean Thomas and animated alongside the help of Japanese studio Satelight. An ONA is available on Crunchyroll and was premiered at the aforementioned events, and it too pays tribute to classic animes, but ones close to Thomas’s heart in terms of their animation, storytelling, and representation. The most notable and prominent influence on the work being Michiko & Hatchin, a series I thoroughly enjoyed and found to be a beautiful action and crime road trip story. Now, I would like to make it clear I am in no way saying that I think “Neo Yokio” is going to be an equivalent to “Children of Ether”, but I am saying it is possible to pay tribute to anime in your story in a multitude of ways. (Once again, see Avatar is an Anime, Fuck You, Fight Me). When I watched “Children of Ether”’s ONA short in theaters, I found it to be a rather interesting story that I looked forward to seeing more of. It had an art style similar to the works it had been influenced by, as the character designer was the same one from Michiko & Hatchin, and it’s voice acting for the main cast was well done and the world was fleshed out enough that it distanced itself from every other post-apocalyptic story we had seen in both eastern and western media. The only fault I had with the real short was the way the character’s mouths and bodies moved in accordance with their voices was always slightly off, both in mouth flaps and general motion. It ended up making some scenes very awkward to watch. Now, that can be explained away by problems with mixing Japanese animation and English voices, but the strange thing is, “Neo Yokio” doesn’t have that issue.
To be more precise, I understand that’s not enough to give Neo Yokio a leg to stand on or to place it above or on par with “Children of Ether” in any way. (I just figured it would be a good way to break paragraphs) “Neo Yokio” might have a better production team than “Children of Ether”, or at best one that has more experienced animating for another language, and as it would seem, that is Production I.G. But if you’re confused on why “Neo Yokio”’s art style has turned so many people off at the same time, it is being co-produced with Studio Deen. (So…) Yet, I feel it is unfair for people to treat “Children of Ether” so well when one can hold hope for “Neo Yokio” in the same way. The art style certainly does not have the same realistic edge as “Children of Ether” does, nor does it have KyoAni or A-1 Picture’s eye candy animation or anything like you would expect to see in “Ping-Pong: The Animation”, “Mob Psycho 100”, or “Tatami Galaxy”. In many ways, I think many people are forgetting what a lot of children’s anime or even mediocre anime looks like- it looks like “Neo Yokio”. It’s not trying to be anything special in that regard, and the typical art style one might see in a Pokemon episode is expanded upon by its western edge, which makes it into its own little mish-mosh creation. I understand it may not be pleasing to some, but it’s not trying to do what “Children of Ether” did where the production company literally was able to snag the exact designer of the work it was influenced by to create something equal. If anything, I think if “Neo Yokio” was given any sort of mainstream style (yes, at this point, I’d say even the oddballs with mixed media styles have enough to be grouped as a collective mainstream style decision) it would be worse off, because then it would be seen as trying too hard to be an actual anime. It would come off as obnoxious and be insulting.
“Children of Ether”’s purpose is to be its own work that visibly shows off the works that preceded it and influenced it in hopes of creating a compelling action and adventure story in a fresh post apocalyptic world. It also hopes to inspire more works to help increase the number of stories in anime that include diversity and representation amongst its cast. The tone of the serious is going to be serious but not melancholy, being able to build exciting suspense in fight scenes without ever falling too far away from the ability to turn a sad moment into a hopeful, but not heartfelt scene. “Avatar: the Last Airbender” and “The Legend of Korra” both are established in Mother’s Basement’s video essay as being a part of the anime community for their obvious art style and storytelling. While western media is meant to make people laugh first, Japanese media is always meant to make you feel for characters before you laugh at them, and although these two series often are known for their comedic scenes, they never break their emotional moments for comedy, they let them set in and simply be emotional and heart wrenching. Even shows like “Steven Universe” can be seen as not a direct western-anime equivalent, but have its moments where it allows itself to replicate Avatar and Korra it’s emotional scenes, but it plays more to the western cartoon art style. Yet, the idea of the story itself is not far from what would be found in Japanese media. And then there’s “Neo Yokio”.
Even though it is true that Japanese animation aims for emotion over comedy, there are countless animes that exist for the pure purpose of making you laugh. “Neo Yokio” is going to be much different than any other western anime purely because all of the aforementioned ones ended up following two main things: art style and storytelling. “Neo Yokio” is a parody though, so both of these are actually secondary. If it were to try to follow the storytelling style, it would end up being “edgy” with all its references being seen as though it was trying too hard to replicate anime that it would be cringey- as many proclaim it will be. The lines hashed out by Jaden Smith should be enough to explain away that, but the main point is that because this series is trying to include a variety of anime references (mechas, demon hunters, etc.) the story is going to be certainly original but not original enough that it can survive in a serious tone and not been called out as a blatant copy. By taking the parody route, the series will most likely be able to be consumed as a sort of an anime abridged video, but not to improvisation level and chaoticness of “Ghost Stories”. I deeply believe that by deciding to make this series a parody instead of your typical western anime, it will be much more successful and much less cringey than it is being expected to be.

That 10 Best Anime Series on Netflix
Beyond the typical movie and TV offerings on Netflix, the streaming product also has an array of Anime ranging with mainstream staples enjoy Naruto to primary series like Neo Yokio. But with shows featuring patio furniture from ninjas and icon robots to sentient gear, superheroes, and murderous high-school scholars, how can an individual choose which to look at first? In order to resolve your streaming doubts and woes, Vulture provides this guide to help Netflix’s Anime selection, featuring ten of the greatest shows available to stream today.
Attack on Titan
In some of our current age with terrifying dystopian facts, it’s hard to identify a dystopian show with something novices at deliver — nevertheless here it is usually. In the environment of Attack on Titan, humans are now living communities enclosed inside giant, concentric rooms. Outside the rooms, giant humanoid pests called “titans” wander. Oh, and they also have an appetite with regard to humans. When smart, larger titans using new abilities demonstrate themselves and break in the barriers, the military ought to figure out ways to defeat them and fortify metropolis. Oppressively sad inside particular way just dystopian shows may be, Attack on Titan follows three friends as they simply join the military and tend to be immediately thrown in the fray of some sort of titan attack. Not a single thing sacred in the following show, which options beloved characters possessing mercifully crushed, chomped, together with smashed in just about every episode. Still, that writers know interest, building a world and then a story with many layers that, as soon as you dig in, you can’t help but dont stop learning .. Season one on Netflix.
Death Note
Virtually no, not Netflix’s abominable live-action version. I’m talking regarding the original series, which stands among the greatest Animes out of them all. Such hefty approval is well-deserved just by this show, which builds relating to the classic cat-and-mouse investigation company drama and branches out in the realm of that supernatural, in which passing gods and magical notebooks are definitely the norm. When Light Yagami, a bright (but everything needed sociopathic) student gets his mitts a notebook so that him to anonymously stop whomever’s name he writes within it, he begins some sort of campaign to cleanse the modern world of its criminals — consequently, all those which oppose him. Nevertheless first, he must ward off the equally smart and eccentric detective determined to give up him. Beyond it's deft twists together with turns, Death Note additionally addresses questions approximately morality, justice, together with capital punishment. Almost the entire package, plus beautiful animation and well-written discussion and plot, makes Death Note the cream in the animated crop.
Fate/Stay Night [Unlimited Blade Works]
If you value your Anime which includes a coat of shine, you’ll like the following series, which has cartoon so shiny it seems like they ran the illustrations via the power wax in the car wash. A gaming turned manga directed Anime, Fate/Stay Night [Unlimited Blade Works] comes after Shirou Emiya, an idealistic high school graduation student who gets dragged to a secret life-or-death miraculous tournament fought just by magicians and their own servants, the summoned mood of mythological together with historical heroes. For any surviving victor waits the legendary Ultimate goal, which has the strength to grant the superior magician any wish the affected individual desires. Although there’s truly great history of matches being successfully adapted into other styles of media (ahem, Silent Hill along with the Resident Evil franchise), Fate/Stay Night will work. The real treats are definitely the battles and that servants, who comprise such mythological greats since Medea, Cuchulain, together with King Arthur, and both of whom has an exceptional ability or gun.
Kill la Kill
File this in the position of “lovably, comically foolish. ” Kill la Kill comes after the journey on the schoolgirl named Ryuko as she quest for her father’s monster. Wielding one share of a giant couple of magical red scissors since her weapon of preference, Ryuko enrolls within a high school that the students fight thanks to uniforms that allow them to have superhuman abilities. When Ryuko learns a sentient consistent that bestows her with her very own set of specialized abilities, she has to help fight her way in the school’s hierarchy with uniformed super-fighters to uncover the answers your lady desires. Two few more episodes of 100 % pure, unadulterated camp, Kill la Kill shamelessly benefits gold in regards to racy humor together with packs every minute with action, going with almost manic pace through its block, which plays out being a drug-fueled fantasy. Almost the entire package is grounded just by Ryuko, the the majority determined, streetwise miraculous girl you’ll truly meet.
Naruto
Among the most popular Anime number of the past 2 full decades, Naruto has done considerably to bring Anime in the mainstream. Naruto, a little ninja with latent abilities and then a heart of your old watches, goes on missions together with his team and tries to figure his way in the direction of becoming the Hokage, a- of the whole village. Full of underdog fights and sunny self-assurances, Naruto takes on most of the tropes of that shōnen Anime sort. But if you’re in need of subtlety and succinct storytelling, look in another place: With hundreds with episodes, Naruto is long-winded to speak about the least. Nevertheless, it’s not a major international sensation for virtually no reason; it’s a great action-packed show using comedy, drama, and positive messaging regarding the power of labor, determination, and neighborhood. Seasons one through three on Netflix.
One-Punch Man
Without a doubt, it’s not probably the most exciting concept: a bored superhero with the unbeatable one-punch breach tries (and repeatedly fails) to uncover someone to test him. Who wishes to watch a robust, near-unstoppable hero consistently win? But One-Punch Man is not even close to the typical superhero exhibit. Our hero, Saitama, loaded in uncool, hand crafted superhero duds, seems interested in getting deals in the supermarket than establishing himself as being the great savior in the city. Drawing with tropes from well-known shōnen and witty books, One-Punch Man provides comically exaggerated villains, idiotic together with incompetent heroes, and an unconsciously powerful protagonist in whose thriftiness and deadpan laughs make him — and this also show — truly extraordinary. Season one on Netflix.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
A tackle the popular sort of magical-girl Anime, Madoka Magica isn’t that fluff-and-puff series it is very much. When a middle-school person named Madoka together with her friend Sayaka face a catlike miraculous creature who assures to grant these any wish once they agree to struggle witches, it appears like everything’s going to remain flowers and natural light and cute clothing. But when Madoka together with Sayaka meet many other magical girls and the fine print on their magical-girl agreement, there’s not really much flowers and sunshine as there does exist death and give up hope. (However, there are a good amount of cute outfits. ) Madoka Magica riffs away from the expectations of magical-girl Anime to develop something darker, without a doubt, but also even more ultimately fulfilling. Quite possibly the animation, some sort of surprising 2-D collection of patterns together with colors, is trippy together with jarring, but in best wishes ways.
Rurouni Kenshin
Don’t skip this golden oldie, among the list of oldest Anime series on the market to stream on Netflix. Rurouni Kenshin comes about during the Meiji period of time in Japan, where an assassin formerly termed Hitokiri Battousai (“Battousai that Manslayer”) now moves the name Himura Kenshin and lives for a friendly, wandering samurai who vows never to take another lifetime. As a warning sign of his reformed options, he travels which includes a sword with some sort of backward blade. However the show has it's lighthearted moments, it’s not flippant considering how it handles it's themes of atonement together with justice. And even though it’s got a few filler episodes, the action views are memorable and Kenshin can be a worthy protagonist. For new fans to your series, there can be a few questions: How come the main dynamics talk like Yoda? The amount of times can the term Battousai be said within a episode? Is a sword which includes a backwards blade a good thing? Why is a villain a mummy? It’s acceptable, you can just pick it.
Sword Art Online
And for that reason it was claimed: Blessed are that gamers, for they shall inherit the globe … or at the least some really fascinating gear. This series comes after a talented teen gamer named Kirito since he tries the brand new in interactive playing games: Sword Art Online. He and innumerable others quickly identify that they’re trapped contained in the game, and once they die in that virtual world, they die in true to life. The only way to avoid, of course, may be to defeat the gameplay. Kirito teams up which includes a fellow kick-ass online gamer, Asuna, to face that game’s bosses and various human threats, and work out how to live their lives from this virtual world. The action from this show is a giant draw, but the true pull is precisely how it depicts the best way its characters react inside circumstances. The connection between Kirito together with Asuna, which evolves with a partnership between two teenagers looking to survive to an adult, supportive romance between a family who had to quickly become older in a distressing situation, is so well-done that will you’ll be rooting for your kids more than you would probably Romeo and whatshername.
Your Lie in April
Undoubtedly just about the most beautiful works with animation on Netflix today, what Your Lie in April delivers visually should be matched by precisely what it delivers sentimentally. In this passionate drama, strait-laced piano natural born player Kousei Arima undergoes a mental breakdown for a piano recital together with becomes deaf to your sound of his well-known piano-playing. But as soon as Arima meets Kaori Miyazono, a modern young violinist which plays with wildness together with passion, he starts out to re-evaluate precisely what he understands approximately music and themself. Your Lie in April certainly doesn’t cover where it’s advancing: We’ve got a great emotionally damaged boy and a manic pixie wish girl, and we realize from the beginning that there’s a superb chance this entire thing could join the express train to your Land of Crying. Still, you can’t allow but get used by the account of Arima, in whose joys, fears, and anxieties are sent to life through verdant, synesthetic animations that move along with the music. That alone makes this worth watching.

Unwanted Commentary
Eps 1: Is Kaz from Neo Yokio meant to be anything other than detestable..?
Helena on the other hand. I am digging helena.
“Tonight, the metropolitan museum of art, will run red, with the blood of the bourgeois” Netflix got me rooting for demons.
In all seriousness the pandering in this show is so blatant its cringeworthy, but at least its kinda funny, and well directed. And props to the art department (nothing I’d call visually spectacular or anything but a lot better than a lot of other animes & animations in general.) The dialogue seems kind of...off and unnatural and I feel like I’m missing something about it. I feel like if I was american and/or had a larger depth of anime knowledge I’d enjoy/pick up on a lot more of the cross cultural jokes/nods. Still there’s something about it that makes it very watchable. I’m definitely missing a lot of undertones though and its annoying me, I want to get it fully.
oh holy shit the pandering just gets more obvious and uncritical though ugh I’m choking rn “well first off, gender is a spectrum not a binary and second of all, I know a misogynist when I see one!” and then he throws the dude in the pool. Though I think there’s some unintended/enjoyable irony at the character playing that card being a literal upper class man in a dress. More enjoyable than the (probably?) intended irony of wealthy Helena’s champagne socialist attitude + lack of actual activism.
I love Milla tho, 10/10 (the russian chick)
It’s a shame 5 episodes in it doesn’t seem to be getting much better. The show still doesn’t seem to make clear if it wants to take itself seriously or not and if it wants to make a point or not. The fantasy setting and some off the theme’s had so much potential but it seems to be interested only in tongue and check, superficial exploration of them in a “passing by” way. Though I’m still kiiiiinda hoping it will be one of those shows that starts light hearted and superficial but intensifies as it matures and gets deeper/less...basic. I just don’t want the setting wasted mostly. I hope they do more world building too like they dipped their toes but I want a  proper swim.
And character building. Damn now that I think about it the character building has been awful. The only character with any significant arch is Helana (view point change and then the change from passivity to action.) I feel like there’s been an attempt at showing a pallid excuse for maybe the foundations of an arch in Kaz which I guess if they’re expecting at least two more seasons is okay. Would be kind of jarring if they set the pace for his personal progression to be this slow and then accelerated to Helena’s levels next season, but then again if there any substantial characters soon it may become harder to watch.
Ugh I can’t stand when writers are lazy and put the main characters in these non issues. Your aunt said you have no legal obligation to entertain this creep. Him asking, “should we dine together” when the main characters are in a rush to get a train, is not something that should be followed by a scene of them dining with him..??? Like people can say no in socially acceptable ways and even if Kaz is a complete idiot that can’t think of any excuses he has no reason to not be rude?? this guy has no power over you? Its aggravating af. And the “conflict” was resolved pretty immediately anyway so it was either filler (and tbh if you need fillers in your 22 minute episodes -including credits and intro- only 6 episodes into your brand new show you really shouldn’t be writing.) If it isn’t a filler, then it was a terrible excuse for a plot moment (I’m guessing the creep realising Kaz is hiding Helena + confirmation that she loves/is infatuated with him.) But important plot revelations shouldn’t be shoehorned within arbitrary non-conflicts and if you’re going to make the exposition that obvious you might as well have just had a scene cutting to the creep talking on the phone to a colleague, “yes I have suspicious Kaz Khan is harboring the fugitive.” At least it would have been an ode to a cliche classic. Pulp fiction style (genre not movie.)
Wtf so the blonde dude is a villain again. I really REALLY hope they’re building something with that because if they just scrapped one of the only character changes across six episodes imma be pissed. Even though it was poorly executed. Unless that was the point and its meant to be a point towards the boredom of the upper classes or something but I feel like I’m really reaching here.
Its not TRASH and I really do want it to get better so I GUESS I’ll watch season two when it’s out.
EDIT: Now I’m watching trash, (”Haters Back Off” -Miranda and its way better written than Neo Yokio)

Watch it here with a Netflix subscription. Neo Yokio is set in the titular town, and stars Jaden Smith as the existentially-questioning "magistocrat" Kaz Kazan. SEASON 2 - BAD NEWS BUT MOSTLY GOOD NEWS
I wanted to follow up on my last (now deleted) post, about season 2.
I want to be both optimistic and cautious.
I could not find a second source confirming that release date. And it looks like the website (whenetflix) tends to just make shit up for clickbait, so i deleted the post featuring them.
But the optimistic part is: even if it's not real, that doesn't mean there isn't a release date, just that it's not that one.
Below is a little bit of evidence suggesting that season two is happening, which i was going to post closer to when i thought it might be announced or hinted at officially, but since we're here I might as well share it now.
Something i find compelling (that my mom doesn't 😭) is this little timeline:
2015 - NY production started
2016 - still in progress
2017 - NY S1 released
2018 - NY pink christmas released
2019 - S2 production started?
2020 - still in progress?
2021 - present day/?
If s2 takes as long or longer to make as s1, and production started right after Pink Christmas or later... That means a hypothetical s2 would be completed this year or maybe the next. Especially with covid and especially if there's a proper 12 episodes, factors like those put the release date at the later end.
December's coming up, and i predict there's gonna be some sort of announcement then somewhere saying something like
"happy Hanukkah, happy holidays, pink christmas anniversary is coming up, watch that shit on Netflix and stream friend like u on Spotify, to celebrate here's a gift for fans of the show, [insert s2 announcement here]"
Even if it doesn't explicitly say "season 2 is here"
That's what it'll mean.
(you gotta let me know if this happens cause all i have is tumblr and youtube)
I have more ny theories I'm working on, one of which is sort of connected to this, they take me a while to write. Not as long as fics though 😎
But i do have a Christmas oneshot ready. I just gotta rewatch Pink Christmas to make sure there's no continuity errors, and i don't want to watch it yet considering it's only Nov 8th
And I'm finally getting back into figure skating (Olympics will do that to you), so I may add another chapter to my Neo Yokio figure skaters au soon as well.
