27.08.2023 | I've spent most of this morning creating more reels for my Instagram. As much as I love doing it, I forgot how time consuming editing videos can be! Now, it's time for me to finish off one of my upcoming Notion templates (it's a travel planner, like the ULTIMATE travel planner) and do some revision ahead of my upcoming clinical placement starting this Tuesday. Hope you're all having a great day.

just american problems: Trying to decide if tens of thousands in college debt is worth being able to see a primary care physician because That might genuinely be cheaper than being un-insured or switching to a private insurance to see a primary care provider not associated with a college.

i have never liked bugs and most animals that aren't cats/rabbits/puppies. i certainly do not like earthworms. one week in neurobio lab we were learning to measure action potentials by placing sedated earthworms on some wires and stimulating them w electric pulses that would travel down their giant nerve. we had to repeat this multiple times. the worms were mostly asleep, switched between alcohol and water baths. towards the end of the experiment i had gotten over my ick and could handle them with my bare hands. class ends, we're packing up our items, and i joke to my lab partner about the stories these little worms will have to tell their friends later. my TA, walking past, went, "oh! oh no, ru, we're not releasing them into the wild". there was too much alcohol in their bodies to just be returned to the environment now, so they would have to be put to sleep and, i assume, disposed of.
this isn't uncommon in neuroscience research, btw. another week it was frogs, another week it was fruit flies, one week it was grasshoppers (though they were live, so perhaps released or kept for future studies). never had to work with mice but i know they are a very common model organism. you get the idea.
again, i never liked worms. but i was heartbroken at this news. these little guys were taken from the soil for some undergrads to fuck up their lab report and then put to sleep. they helped me with my silly little weekly report that my grades (and graduation) depended on. anyways every time it rains i have a laser focus on the sidewalk now so i don't step on any, and i move the ones that i can out of the path and back into the grass and soil. a tiny repayment.
the point is that science often requires cruel methods, for educating and training and making important discoveries to save human lives. it's an unavoidable truth. but i do think it also invites a lot of love.

It fascinates me how we try to understand memories and emotions and our entire self by simply drawing the brain on paper. We try to sum up a person in words and logic and reasoning.
All logic aside, is it not simply magical? Chemicals becoming signals, making us come to life, creating a voice inside of our heads, making us what we are; becoming who we are entirely.
While all may be explainable, I sometimes still want to stop and appreciate this… craftsmanship. I do not know who made this, who made us… but I do believe we were impossible to create without a touch of magic.

02.09.2023 | Today was much more productive than yesterday (thankfully!). I spent the morning catching up on some dermatology revision, then created an illustration for a publication I'm working on and then sent out some emails for the charity I work for.

honestly crazy how much trial by fire we had to go through for bioethics to find a place in biomedical research. 23 nazi doctors were accused of crimes against humanity during the nuremberg war crime trials. from 1932 all the way through 1972, black american men were (unbeknownst to them) subjects in the phs study of untreated syphilis, and weren't even offered treatment when it became available. the revolting willowbrook trials, where mentally disabiled children were deliberately infected w hepatitis. the jewish chronic disease hospital study, where cancer cells were. on purpose. injected into cognitively impaired patients. fucking wild and crazy and insane. this is why the national act and the belmont report and 38736 other regulations exist. i cannot imagine being a doctor or clinical researcher during that time and just 1000% doing this w no conscience.
