The Neuroanatomy of ADHD (recommend to watch on 1.25 speed)
Part of Dr Russel Barkley's talk about the neuroanatomy of ADHD, touching on topics of Working Memory, Motivation, Timing, and Emotional regulation. The full talk is also available on YouTube if you want to listen to it all.
I found his work very useful in understanding more about how ADHD can affect the 'expected' working functions of the brain. By being able to pin down more specifically the ways in which my brain differs from the typical, I feel better equipped to find and develop accommodations that actually work to combat them and also to accept and understand more about myself.

The neuroscience lecture today was really fun. First about addiction, and then about depression. Discussing the neurochemical changes and how permanent they are. Changes in gene expression and nerve connections. Changes of brain anatomy. Not concerning at all.
....not that I have any of that. Anyway.

march 21, 2024 1:15am
got home at 4pm yesterday, slept until 8:30pm so i had really late dinner, and started studying at 9
we have neuroanatomy practicals tomorrow, and i can't study well if i don't study / make my own notes
classes start at 1pm tomorrow so will probably sleep at 4am and wake up at around 7 to do a bit of yoga and study again
not ideal for me to have just 3 hours of sleep but i really wanna do well in this exam since it's the last few months of the 2nd semester

So I've been writing the hippocampus chapter in my thesis and since it's one of those structures in the brain that was discovered thousands of years ago (but still no one knew what it actually did until like 70 yesrs ago), every time someone describes it, they give it a new name. These are my favorite so far.
For reference, this is what it actually looks like:
Tumblr media
And this is its positon in the brain:

Okay the names:
White silkworm
Cornus ammonis (the horne of amon, an ancient egyptian god).
Seahorse or hippocampus in ancient greek (although apperantly, while hippos does mean horse, kampus means sea monster which is much more interesting than just seahorse if you ask me).
Horse-caterpiller (??)
Neptune's steed (mythological creature with the body of a horse and the head of a dolphin).
Dolphine lmao

Neuroanatomy and eye visual information to thalamus
Gulcneate cell to thalamus to photo receptors to visual cortex from the retina is where the process begins after the light is hit or absorbed by it.
The visual cortex and chemical receptors work along the nerves and give the visual information that is required for the person and significantly it is viewed only with the visible light.
The chemical receptors involving several reactions can make it work with retina, cornea and with the cerebral connection.
The process goes with the trans retinal from cis retinal and simultaneous change in the molecular arrangement, typically it relies on the mechanism of isomerisation & the photo transduction.
And there lies an explanation with the psychological model of visual information and the chemical receptors that are involved in it to process the vision. And more than 3 visual cortex situated in the brain during the process from transformation from trans retinal to the cortex in the brain.
And speaking of chemical receptors from scholarly angle, the rod and cones react to the light.
From research point of view : Loss or any degeneration of photoreceptors found is considered as the common forms of blindness. This is a central hallmark of conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, and diabetic retinopathy. Once photoreceptors are lost, there is no effective way to restore sight in this generation of medical facility.

Here's some mock gundam set model instruction manual of the spinal cord that I made for my neuroanatomy class. I was pretty proud of it.

Sorry if this is weird but if you are ever wanting to, I would be so down to have neurology facts shouted at me. I'm endlessly fascinated by the brain and how it works. 😄
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
OK ONE COOL FACT THAT I THINK IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
THERE IS A WHITE MATTER STRUCTURE LOCATED IN THE CEREBELLUM CALLED THE ARBOR VITAE. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:
Tumblr media
THE COOLEST PART IS, ARBOR VITAE IS LATIN FOR “TREE OF LIFE” BECAUSE THE STRUCTURE ITSELF APPEARS LIKE TREE BRANCHES GOING THROUGH THE WHOLE CEREBELLUM!!
AND EVEN BETTER, ITS FUNCTION IS TO BRING SENSORY AND MOTOR INFORMATION TO THE CEREBELLUM THROUGH THESE BRANCHES!!
AND SINCE THE CEREBELLUM’S FUNCTION (PROCESSING OF SENSORY AND MOTOR INFORMATION) IS DIFFERENT IN AUTISTICS THERE IS SOME DIFFERENCES IN THE TINY ANATOMICAL DIVISIONS IN THE CEREBELLUM. SCIENTISTS FOUND THAT THE VERMIS LOBULES VI-VII WHICH CONTRIBUTE TO WHOLE BODY POSTURE WERE SMALLER IN AUTISTIC PEOPLE THAN THE CONTROLS (ALLISTICS) WHICH IS WHY A LOT OF AUTISTICS HAVE UNUSUAL POSTURE AND SPATIAL/BODY AWARENESS!!
I THINK THIS IS SUPER COOL BECAUSE EACH PART OF THE BRAIN IS NAMED SO CAREFULLY AND THE LATIN NAMES ARE BEAUTIFUL! ALSO AUTISM’S STRUCTURAL BRAIN DIFFERENCES ARE SO INTRIGUING BECAUSE THEY CAN BE VERY SLIGHT AND FOUND IN MANY DIFFERENT AREAS BUT HAVE SUCH A HUGE IMPACT!!!!
HOPEFULLY THAT WAS INTERESTING FOR YOU!!
