Robin Buckley is autistic-coded. And I love it.
Tumblr media
The line: "I don’t really have a filter or a strong grasp of social cues" is such an important line. It's always so refreshing to see such positive neurodivergent representation in female characters. Robin is highly intelligent, highly empathetic and struggles to contextualise and understand social situations but she is shown to be genuine and honest.
It's realistic that she doesn't have a diagnosis of ASD, given that this show is set in the 1980's and autism in females is so misunderstood still today, in 2022.
She says she is aware that her coming across as "mean or condescending" is a "flaw" because her "mother reminds (her) me everyday", which is something so common in undiagnosed autistic people.
We know from season three that Robin wasn't overly popular at school, and was the sort of student that played band and got high grades. We know that Robin doesn't do well when talking about her emotions and she can be quite straight to the point in conversations. She struggles to make friends and has quite a monotone way of speaking. I think it's been hinted at that her special interests may be movies, languages and band.
Additionally, she's shown to have sensory issues with particular textures when she talks about hating wearing certain clothing.
Robin is so well-liked, too. So having her coded to be autistic is such a lovely reminder that being autistic is okay. I think we all need that sometimes.
I headcanon she also has Dyspraxia because she says, and I quote, "I should warn you, I have terrible co-ordination. It took me like 6 months longer to learn to walk than the other babies." She can't run. I can't run very well. She has Dyspraxia. And that's co-morbid with ASD.
Also, there have been studies to show that autistic people are more likely to be LGBTQ+, so it makes sense. Robin is 100% an autistic lesbian and I love her.
Anyways, I haven't seen autism portrayed in a female character this well since Phoebe Spengler in Ghostbusters: Afterlife; these 80's set series and films really are giving us the most incredible representation.
Thank you, Stranger Things. This is such a genuine portrayal of autism. Thank you.
Edit: I'm seeing a lot of people saying that Robin wasn't neurodivergent in season three and I just wanted to add that masking is a thing. Robin didn't know Steve well enough to feel comfortable to lower that mask before. There are hints that she is autistic even in season three, like when she really struggles to find the words to describe how she's feeling and rambles when faced with difficult situations.
In fact, Steve even has to tell her that she "wasn't helping" when El was trying to sort out her leg in the mall scene. The hints were there all along but season four gave us an unmasked Robin and I am so grateful for that.

Do you eve wonder if snape was ND and possibly autistic?
Oh yes. In fact, I've made Snape autistic in at least one story: How (Not) To Date a Gryffindor.
It's funny now that I have my own autism and ADHD diagnosis, that I see ND traits in lots of other people, both fictional characters as well as people in Real Life.
Harry is someone I can definitely see as having ADHD, with his inability to plan anything and his chronic impulsiveness.
Another character that might very well have ADHD is Sirius Black, who also has zero impulse control. Yet he's capable of great things as long as he's able to put his mind to it (animagus at 15, marauder's map), just like Harry (patronus at 13).
Snape is a character that can easily be interpreted as autistic, with his questionable social skills, his tendency towards fixation (Lily in this case) and his very short temper. All things that can be explained by autism.
Another character that can be read as ND is Tom Riddle, who very well might have both autism and ADHD. The autism gives him his difficulty to make friends, his desire to be alone, his egocentric tendencies, his fixations on things like immortality and his short temper. The ADHD, combined with his genius intellect, drives him forever forward, makes him take enormous risks (splitting his fucking soul at 16) and his very poor impulse control gives him a certain lack of common sense (letting a basilisk loose in a school and then being surprised they're going to close the school).
I'm not saying that any of these charaters were deliberately written as neurodivergent or that this is the only way to interpret them. But it certainly does fit them and it also explains for myself why I've always felt drawn to them moreso than other characters.
Since I've had my own diagnosis I have started writing some of these characters as deliberately neurodiverse, to help me deal with my own wonky little brain. I'm glad that overall this has had a very good response.

Sensitivity readers
Tumblr media
Hello! I need sensitivity readers for Wild Stories. The series is tackling some heavy themes and I want to be sure that I go about it in the right way.
I'm looking for:
-Jewish Sensitivity readers
-Black Sensitivity readers
I'd also appreciate women sensitivity readers, asexual sensitivity readers, sensitivity readers with autism, sensitivity readers who are Roma or Italian, or sensitivity readers who can advise on trauma/abuse recovery. Also people with ADHD are appreciated. I think my research is mostly solid in these areas, but having someone else's input is always better. I'll eventually be looking for a sensitivity reader with trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) for a future story line but I don't have anything written down for it yet.
This is really causal, even just suggestions and advice in my ask or dms would be super helpful. I can't pay anyone, (I'm broke) so I'd probably just be offering my own services in exchange.
I can sensitivity read for:
-being trans masculine
-being non-binary
-being biracial
-A good deal of mental illnesses, dm for specifics.
-being autistic
I've never done it before but, hey first time for everything. I'm really selling this aren't I? I can also do beta reading (probably) and if you're looking for any other kind of writing help just let me know and I'll see what I can do.
Thanks for reading this, I appreciate it! :)

book review || Fake It Till You Bake It by Jamie Wesley
video review ||
~Thanks to Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of Fake It Till You Bake It in exchange for an honest review. ~
Okay, so this was a good month for fake dating books because I also liked how this book handled the trope! That being said though, this wasn’t as great as I was hoping.
I love a good cooking setting romance, but the pacing of this was all over the place and the plot was... weird.
This started off strong, with a meet-ugly between Jada and Donovan. Initially, I really was thinking Donovan would be my preferred POV, but Jada ended up growing on me. She felt very personable and I could certainly relate to her speaking before you think issue as well as her fear of failure and disappointing her loved ones. The message about how women are portrayed in media was well done and the handling of her dyslexia was as well. I think overall, Jada had a strong character arc and was probably the most well-written character in the book. On the other hand, Donovan was charming in the beginning but I felt as though his personality slowly waned as the book progressed. And god, the possessiveness that comes out of nowhere and was so unwarranted! On top of that, his side plot felt very low stakes given that he could lose his company.
The attraction between these two was instant, but I didn’t feel like there was enough chemistry to back it up. They bickered a lot (sometimes sounding more like teenagers than adults) and only had a few serious conversations where I felt that a relationship was actually blossoming. Two chili peppers for the smut scene.
Side characters should have been more built up by the end, especially if there is going to be a sequel, and the last-minute conflict was so unnecessary. It lasted a single chapter. And then, of course, the required couple drama that also lasted a chapter. Why can’t we, as a book community, move past this? Instead of making them break up for a single chapter (that apparently was a three-month period?), the last-minute conflict could have been stretched out and the couple could have worked together to find a solution! In the process, they could see how committed they are and what they truly mean to one another! That would have been much more interesting.
I think this was an easy, quick romance read, but unfortunately, didn’t stand out.
3 / 5 stars

#Neurodiversity is a huge part of my "giftedness". Most #Empaths, Channels, #Lightworkers, #Geniuses 🤓, Creatives, what ever you want to call us, are #neurodiverse.
Today in honor of #KatharineHepburn's heavenly birthday 🎂, I share 1 of my favorite #movieClips with you, from 1 of my favorite #classicMovies - #DeskSet, with Katharine #Hepburn & #SpencerTracy.
I am eternally in Love with this couple & this quote. "I associate many things with many things" ... very few things describe me as much as this 🤓
Whenever someone tries to tell me that neurodiversity is "new", I point them this way 🎬. It also happens to be one of the smartest, funniest, sweetest films you'll ever see (I love #trueLove shining through on screen 🥰🥰). I completely recommend the full film, especially this 10 minute segment on #Genius 😉.

When people ask what I write, the short answer is a mumbled “fanfiction”, end of conversation.
…but I can do better than that. My current WIP, without any mentions of fandom, features a neurodivergent character who is a member of the military, and it focuses on their character development over time.
They go from a young, indoctrinated/patriotic soldier, through, trauma, dealing with PTSD, socialization, decision-making, recovery, learning healthy boundaries, and how to relate to others; to a confident, experienced person who is still a soldier but also so much more than that, with agency and stable relationships.

El's bullying in season four is the neurodivergent experience that so many of us can relate to. She had no idea people were being horrible. She thought they were her friends. And it breaks my heart to see it on screen.
I know it's because of her past that she struggles with her speech and her language and writing but it's all neurodivergency. She's autistic in my eyes. Completely.
I'm so sad for her.

Fanfic asks - for the askers
The Necromancer, no doubt. The world building is just incredible!
In The Necromancer, when Harry fights Rylan and gives Rindyll her new epic body (are those in the same chapter? I ain't sure :p)
100% Harry
Tomarry duh
I think I've read every fic you have for the HP fandom expect the crossovers (I don't really like crossovers and only read HP fanfic) so I'd say...none?
The Chamber collapse. That was such a funny oops moment.
The reveal that the children were bring raped and killed in Santika and how Harry was so oblivious to it at the start. That broke my heart when Harry's little friend was killed.
You imagination has no bounds and you describe things so well I can see the scenes in my head very crearly, like watching a movie.
Between Thoughts and Reality, that fic grew on me so fast. I usually don't like fem!Harry much, but you certainly made me enjoy that fic!
Theo Nott's father. He has a special place in my heart now.
You write so much and such varied tropes/topics that I can't think of anything of the top of my head. Maybe something about Soulmates?
The Darkening of your soul. It's so massive at this point that I needed to reread it a couple of times, and everytime was as pleasant as the first.
Nobody outside of online fandom. My IRL friends aren't into fanfic.
Between Thoughts and Reality (and also Witches are. Witches do. by extension) since it's fem!Harry.
In To Live is the Rarest Thing, is Tom really ace or neurodivergent? I'm aro/ace myself and it's nice to see good representation. Even if he is on the autism spectrum that is fantastic because we also need more representation for that! Either would make me happy tbh hehe
Thank you for being such a talented writer and sharing your stories with us <3
Thank you so much for filling out the whole list! I loved reading all the answers.
To answer your question #15: Tom is ace and neurodiverse (just like me). Like so many of us, it took him a while to figure out how to classify himself. And yes, I agree that we all need more representation. I've been including both in more stories since then, but To Live was the first time I made Tom ace and neurodiverse.
So far though I've only used Tom for this kind of representation. I still plan to one day write a Harry that gets an official ADHD diagnosis, because that would fit him quite well.

i want casual, everyday autism in shows. i want autistic characters who need sensory symmetry, who casually mimic anyone's touch on one side of their bodies on the other (or who have friends who do it for them). i want a friend with flashcards or signals for when their friend loses speech. i want people on video calls and body doubling when they do jobs. i want people having conversations without eye contact. i want excited stimming. i want to see someone getting really excited about the tiniest thing thats related to a safefood or a special interest. i want casual, everyday autism.
