anon asked me for some autistic Thalin headcanons. I didn't want to just ADD stuff and just call it a day so I kind of combed through his character to find things that he already does that fits!! Thalin in my canon has anxiety, but I do want to explore more neurodivergent traits in my ocs so this was an interesting little character study!!

Autistic Monoma headcanons? (i think he’s very autistic coded but what do you think?)
very! he seems so neurodivergent (especially autistic)
i don't think that he gets special interests. That's just not a part of his autism in my head
instead if special interests, he latches onto characters to a borderline unhealthy amount. i think its bc he has an undefined sense of self due to masking and the nature of his quirk so when he likes a character, he tries to mimic it

Literally all the Afton kids give off neurodivergent/mentally ill energy so hERE WE GO-
Evan: Autism, anxiety and depression. Executive functioning improves post-rebirth, but at the lowest point in his life it was SO BAD to the point where he had auditory and visual hallucinations and horrific nightmares, as well as insomnia and intrusive/harmful thoughts. Stims almost instinctually, Fredbear is kind of like a de facto stim toy for him. Extremely empathetic, and had to ‘turn the tap off’ as Gregory. Displayed some symptoms of hypersensitivity and epilepsy, though he doesn’t have the condition itself.
Elizabeth: ADHD-PI and anxiety, ADHD-PI being the result of being born from a premature birth. EXTREMELY low executive functioning, has literally had meltdowns over the fact that she’s more ‘scatterbrained’ and ‘innatentive’ than her peers. Has trouble controlling her volume and tone, and does not pick up on other people’s social cues most of the time. Tone-deaf, and terrible musical memory- stims shamelessly (“What’re you gonna do about it, hmm?”)
Michael: Dyslexia and Synesthesia (Chromesthesia and Lexical-Gustatory). @mikewheelerfan2022: For dyslexia, during SL, the HandUnit WAS glitching, yet Michael’s dyslexia exacerbated it, causing him to become exponentially frustrated with the HandUnit every shift. And for Synesthesia, he experiences sound-to-color and sound-to-taste. He associates certain words with colors and tastes. Most of the time it does serve as something he has to live with, and as something noticeable to him yet growing used to it- yet Synesthesia has caused him to have meltdowns and sensory overloads in loud places with a huge variety of overwhelming sound, despite him loving music and being musically gifted (perfect pitch). Few times it is a gift, and a couple times, more often than desired, it is a curse. He tries to hide both of these things from his family and friends as a result of being uneducated. Spirals into a deep depression after the deaths of his younger siblings, obviously.

“Psychology doesn’t work on an idiot savant.”
I don’t want to jump to conclusions and I think that Lupin the Third just has whatever neurodivergent traits the writers find funny, but these are traits of his that I find relatable.

spy x family but it’s giving me queer and neuro-divergent feelings. Personal headcanons ahead with “evidence” from the show.
Twilight: transgender man, sex-neutral asexual. Doesn’t tell anyone his birth name, knows how to navigate different “personas” at work and with his “relationships” being flimsy - just enough to say “they dated” but not enough for actual physical and emotional intimacy. and - I’m not gonna lie he did Franky good with that makeup.
ADHD - he’s accidentally been keeping it in balance due to the high stress lies and extra missions giving him dopamine. Has rejection-sensitivity disorder - he keeps watching for any sign of rejection from anyone and majorly overcompensating.
Yor: cis female, bisexual. Had to grow up fast to take care of her brother, didn’t really have time to explore any feeling about herself.
Autistic - bluntness, inability to understand metaphors. Extreme tolerance to pain. Prefers her “work” dress and getting it repaired is priority would be a preference for certain fabrics.
Honestly the funniest and the saddest part of this show is that everyone thinks everyone else is “normal” and accepts any weird stuff they have going on. Imposter syndrome family~
everyone is just going “don’t be suspicious” and thinking they’re the only one out of place.

Very fucking frustrating to see autism being reduced to a fun character trait that barely impacts functioning by ppl on tumblr. I was diagnosed age 6 and although I would not be myself without it, my autism has absolutely had a major negative impact on my life.
I have suffered and currently suffer so much because of it and that is something that I can't afford not to recognize. I'm not saying "hey autism is nothing but suffering and pain" I'm saying that talking about autism like it's the Special Interest Disorder is a reductive way to look at something that is an inescapable and often very difficult reality for the people who have it.
EDIT: This post is about headcanons, not real people's experiences. Why the fuck would I care what people say about their own autism.

I just realised that all the media I adore has some level of autistic/neurodivergent coding and it's been that way since I was a child.
And like, oftentimes their different way of perceiving and being in the world is the driving force of the story/and or a crucial element in it.
There’s the canon example of the entire Camp Halfblood (ADHD), where the ADHD is literally what keeps the characters alive.
There's Dean Winchester (ADHD) whose hyperfixations are typically masculine (as well as geeky) and who never sits still, with the added bonus of Castiel (Autism), who Dean just... accepts, in a way I rarely see.
Then there’s the infamous Will Graham (Autism) whose hyperempathy is litterally the focal point of the entire narrative.
We have Haru from Free! (Autism), whose special interest (swimming) is the motivating factor for several other characters.
Reki and Langa from Sk8 the infinity (Autism), who share a special interest and grow a special bond because of it.
There's Sai from Hikaru No Go (Autism), who trancedented time and space to play Go (special interest) and whose special interest sets the story into motion.
We have any version of Sherlock Holmes (AuDHD), who's brilliance I attribute to a mixture of hyperfixations and special interest in crime solving. His conflicts with society and disregard of social norms are a central theme as well.
There's Anne with an E (Autism), who loves words and stories and speaks before she thinks (where all major problems arise due to her lack of understanding for social norms)
We have Pat and Pran from Bad Buddy (ADHD + Autism), like I dunno, I just really felt that vibe.
There's Beth Harmon from Queen's Gambit (Autism) with her special interest in Chess.
And like, the list goes on: Daryl Dixon, Jon Snow, Kotaro from Kotaro Lives Alone, Will Treaty from the Ranger's apprentice, Hal from the same author, Katniss Everdeen, Si-eun from Weak Hero Class 1, etc.
Don't get me wrong I've consumed plenty of stories without characters coded this way, but all the stories that truly resonated with me? Neurodivergent, all of them.
It's probably because the focus on social norms/hierarchy always seemed foreign to me. Eg. I like Skam but it's like a view into a completely foreign world where people function differently.

Hi, do you have any Shouto headcannons?
i think he gets hyperfixated on really inconvenient things at really inconvenient times.
test that counts for 30% of his grade? no. he's going to watch 13 videos of people making kneadable erasers and then going to try it himself.
its an absolute mess every time but he doesn't care at all in the moment

I love finding characters I can relate (/project onto) within media. There’s something so comforting about seeing yourself on screen. I end up headcanoning most of them to be in-line with my identities (lesbian, wasian, autistic) because they are literally me in my head!!
Anyway here’s a long ass list of my favorite characters and why I head canon them as autistic for fun!! If you have any others you’d like to add I’d love to hear them. (And please note this is just my interpretation, and highly based on my experience with autism. I’m not saying they’re definitely autistic or that all the traits I listed are the dsm-5 criteria or something.)
Princess Bubblgeum from adventure time:
Tumblr media
This girl is peak evil scientist autistic. Her intense need for control, the way she carefully observes the citizens she created, an outsider to them, not quite like them… god it’s so perfect. I read her as being somewhat low empathy as well, it’s hard for her to change her perspective to that of others. Plus the fact her brother neddy is a pretty obvious metaphor for higher supports needs autism. I think they of represent how autism runs in the family and appears in all sorts of different ways in different people. They’re sort of two different representations of the spectrum.
Marcy wu from amphibia
Tumblr media
I mean this one is just obvious. The biggest nerd of all time. So obsessed with her RPG special interest that she literally sucks her and her friends into a fantasy world. She’s clumsy (just like me fr), very smart but super socially awkward, a little oblivious and naive. She’s terrified of change, especially if it means abandoning the few social bonds she’s been able to make. I honestly find it hard to believe this wasn’t intentional.
Entrapta from she-ra
Tumblr media
Another pretty overt example. I do have some issues with how she was portrayed in the show- (keeping her on a leash was weird.) but overall I really love her. She understands her tech, not people, and it can cause her to come into conflict with other characters. Their treatment of her makes me sad at times, but it’s realistic. I also love some of her other quirks, her love of tiny food, her exitable demeanor, ect.
Pearl from Steven Universe
Tumblr media
Peridot is the more obvious example of an autistic character in SU, and while I agree she’s coded that way, I personally resonate more with Pearl. She is not very socially aware, and bothered by disruptions to her routine/ broader life changes. She doesn’t like to break rules (despite being a literal rebel lol.) I find it interesting how she seems to have the poorest understanding of life on earth out of the gems, despite having lived here for thousands of years. She is graceful, but has an almost sort of awkward gangly-ness to her that I relate to. Her neuroticism is also very similar to how my anxiety disorder presents.
Pearl has a tendency to infodump, without realizing those around her are uninterested. Even her relationship with Rose struck a chord with me. The hopeless devotion to her, the way she followed along at her side. It’s how many of my friendships have been. Obvious it’s not exactly the same considering Pearl having originally been her servant, but while not being an explicitly autistic trait, that sort of clingy, starstruck relationship is something autistic people are prone to developing. She does little hand stims at times too that I love to see.
Poison Ivy (specifically the version in the Harley Quinn animated show)
Tumblr media
I’m surprised I haven’t seen more people mention poison Ivy. Fiercely intelligent and deeply introverted, she isolates herself from all people, and only connects with and understands her plants. (Which her deep affinity for can definitely be read as a special interest.) She very overtly has trouble forming relationships with others.
She’s blunt, socially awkward and a loner, has something of a flat effect and a monotone voice. Those around her initially read her as cold and impersonable. Her struggle with social anxiety as well as intense fear of failure/ low self esteem is also very relatable to me. She also often struggles to express/understand her feelings and emotions. Her radical political ideas and the fact that she’s literally an ecoterrorist paints her as having a very strong sense of justice and a somewhat black and white worldview. (Me)
Finally, her relationship with Harley just SCREAMS neurodivergent solidarity. Harley Quinn is (I think canonically) adhd, and they’re both outsiders in the world that found each other and just… get each other. She’s Ivy’s closest and only friend and amazing girlfriend and god it’s all so perfect.
They remind me a lot of the relationship I have with my best friend with adhd except theirs is gayer.
