Remus and Sirius recognize a feeling of “I have something rotten in my core” in each other. That’s what rejection from a parent, coming from a line of cruel bloodpurists and being stigmatized as a werewolf does. That’s why Remus can forgive the prank, that’s why they are both instinctively ready to kill Peter together.

As Harry says James would not, that shared understanding is what sets their connection apart. However, it’s also their downfall because a feeling that wrapped up in internalized shame is easily manipulated by the war/Peter.

There is no universe in which Sirius chooses anyone over James. That’s not even up to consideration, James is his safe haven and soulmate. Let’s also not forget that it was James who risked his life for Remus during the prank, who financially supported him when he couldn’t find work, who did not distrust him as it would be the height of dishonour.

This doesn’t negate or diminish Sirius and Remus’ relationship but yes, they would both choose James first. They already have before. That’s not an idealization of James, it’s how pivotal he is to their characters. Sirius and Remus’ capacity to love and be loved by James is the light they see within and how they love each other.

James grinned and his cheeks reddened a little. “Good, I think.”

Sirius’s eyes widened. “James Potter, are you blushing? Now I need to know everything.”

James fidgeted with the hem of his jacket a bit. “I’m not sure there’s much to tell? We got together to work on our scenes and that went good…she sat next to me at the movie theater last night…I don’t know.”

“Did you make a move?” Sirius asked curiously. He was wondering if his own lack of action was normal. 

“I…not really. I didn’t want to…I don’t know, spook her?” James said, earnestly. “Like…I’m not sure if she want to…you know…”

“Make out with you?” Sirius supplied, hating that that was where his mind was. 

James chuckled. “Yeah, I guess.”

“I mean…it seems like she wants to hang out and stuff,” Sirius ventured, not sure they were still talking about Lily.

I have this headcanon that one time, McGonagall caught Sirius and James in a prank. She called Effie and Fleamont this time because she didn't know what to do. They agreed that no punishment was enough for them. So they came up with another one.

"So, your punishment is..." McGonagall spoke with the hands on her hips "One week without the other"

"WHAT?"

"NO NO NO NO!"

"Mum! Dad!"

"That's your punishment, son" Fleamont said.

"Don't argue against it, boys" Euphemia added.

And then Sirius and James made puppy eyes and made pouts looking at each other.

And then James started speaking.

"Oh Sirius..."

"No!" Sirius protested.

"I think it is time for us to take some time...." James said with his voice breaking.

"No!" Sirius shook his head, with tears in his eyes.

"I am sorry..."

"For how long?"

"For how long?" James asked the adults.

The adults looked between each other.

"A week?" McGonagall suggested and the Potters agreed.

Both boys whined.

"Oh Sirius..." James grabbed his hands "This hurts me more than anything I've ever done"

"Oh James!" Sirius whined "What am I gonna do without you?"

"We will see each other again, okay?" James continued as Sirius fakely sobbed "And if you meet someone else, another best friend in the meantime..." James nodded "I would understand"

"No!" Sirius protested "I am never going to forget you. No one will be able to replace you"

"Do you boys realize it is only for a week?" Fleamont asked.

But the boys ignored him.

"I am going to miss you, my sweet sweet Sirius" James touched his cheek.

"I am going to miss you too" Sirius kissed James' hand.

The adults just observed them. Mcgonagall rolled her eyes.

"Don't cry... come here" and he pulled him into a hug "You are going to be my first. Always. My first best friend"

Sirius sniffed, nodding.

"I will always love you"

"Please don't leave me, James! I love you so much!"

"Okay... starting from now" Fleamont said as he dragged James to his feet.

Then James began singing to the lyrics of I will always love you by Whitney Houston, while he was being "dragged" by Fleamont, extending his arm towards Sirius. Sirius joined him in the singing, trying to reach his arm.

"SIRIUS!" James cried from the entrance.

"JAMES!" Sirius cried as well.

"Don't you think that was a bit too harsh, Minerva?" Effie finally asked, watching how Sirius dramatically crumbled to the floor and pretended to sob.

But Minerva shrugged "They'll get over it"

Sirius extricated himself from Remus’s neck where he was currently murmuring in his ear and snapped his head round to James, who was sporting a gleeful grin.

“What?”

“Ex?” Lily said in surprise. “Who in the world else have you dated?”

“That delightful young woman over there,” James said, thoroughly enjoying himself.

They all looked over in the direction of his gaze to see a pale, elegant woman with a sharp jawline and glossy dark hair pulled back in a tight bun standing by the bar, tapping her fingernails absentmindedly on the wood as she waited to be served.

“No, Potter, don’t try and pull one over,” Lily said, shaking her head. “I’m not buying it.”

“Evans I’m serious,” James told her earnestly. “Pads dated her back in fourth year.”

“Yeah, alright. Sirius dated a ridiculously attractive woman who looks like she’d step on you, and you’d be grateful.”

“Yup,” James said cheerily. “He was nurturing quite the crush on Moony at the time, of course. A little attempt at deflection if I recall, eh Pads?”

“Would you fuck off,” Sirius muttered, currently trying to disappear as far down in his seat as possible.

“Roslyn!” James called out.

“Prongs are you fucking kidding me!”

“Fancy seeing you here!” James beamed, waving across the pub.

Roslyn looked round in surprise and caught sight of James. Her eyes ran over the rest of the group and she seemed to freeze, desperately searching for a way to escape, before giving an awkward smile and conceding to her fate.

“Pads, it, er, looks like she’s coming over,” Remus told him, smirking into his drink.

“James, hi,” Roslyn said, clutching a glass of red wine. “Hi Remus. And I’m sorry, I don’t know your name?”

“It’s Lily.”

Roslyn shook the outstretched hand offered to her, and then her gaze fixed on the large mound of black fur nestled next to Remus.

“Oh, is that a dog?”

“It is indeed,” smiled Remus, his eyes twinkling. “He’s a little skittish today, I’m sorry. Just wants to hide away. He can be a bit of a coward sometimes.”

Padfoot growled.

“Oh!” Roslyn said in surprise. “Oh, okay. Well, I’ve got to head out to the garden - my girlfriend’s waiting for me.”

“Fantastic,” grinned James. “Lovely to see you Roslyn.”

“Yes, wonderful,” she said forcefully. “Have a good evening.”

Lily smiled from under her palm as she tried to hold back her laughter, and Remus gave an awkward half-wave. They managed to keep it together until Roslyn was safely outside, then the three burst into hysterics.

“You absolute fucking devil, Prongs,” Sirius said murderously.

It's crazy that people still uphold show!Sansa as a well-written character and pretend that liking her is the pinnacle of feminism when it would be infinitely more impactful to acknowledge her terrible and misogynistic writing. This is the same character who, while written by two men, was thankful for the abuse she suffered because it allowed her to grow. The same character who we had to be told was smart because the writers were too lazy to develop or show her intelligence. i keep thinking about how “is this what justice means to you, answer me neuvillette”, despite having been used in a case all those hundred of years ago, was probably a question that haunted - and still haunts - neuvilette during the entire time he has been chief of justice. i keep thinking about how they highlighted his struggles through time with both carole and wriothesley's trials. how guilty and powerless neuvillette must have felt for not being able to support and save those he recognised as vulnerable and victims before a system that corrupted their fates but that he wasn't able to change despite his position. the theme of being a casualty of a system no matter if you're the victim or the perpetrator in its eyes. the way neuvillette took, in both cases, things into his own hands. even if it was too late to fix the hurting carole and those who cared for her went through, even if it was too late to save her life; even if it was impossible to change wriothesley's past, his verdict and subsequent imprisonment; neuvillette went above and beyond, making use of his influence, to allow both melusines and wriothesley the opportunity of a better future - to melusines by making sure they weren't discriminated, to wriothesley by supporting his attempt at a second chance in life. i think part of the reason he's so intriguing is our awareness that this internal conflict he's bound to have is so complex. you have a chief of justice, or a judge, that is supposed to be imparcial and follow the law stictly confronted with situations of social injustice, unable to protect those who rely on him. you have someone who understands better than anyone what it means to be an outcast, being able to relate to those who are ostracised and have their pain weaponise against them. you have, in vautrin's case, a friend who cannot even showcase his own pain and is still expected to fullfil his juridical duties despite being personally related with those involved in the case. someone who people constantly turn to but whom he feels like he has no right to turn to himself. it's about the conflict between his feelings and his duty, between what's expected of him and what he can actually do. i think that's why the end of his story quest is so emotional and why it's so heartwarming to have him realise he isn't an outcast anymore, that he has a community there for him too. because a system is a system and he will probably never be able to save everyone, because yes he isn't human, but it doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to belong or that an active demonstration of love towards individuals and people he can relate to rather than the theoretical concept of humanity isn't meaningful. in fact, i'd it's a lot about that, about finding ways to be kind and how community gives meaning to life; how personal relationships and targeted kindness can shape society, or at least i think so

rant warning by the way, I accidentally got more and more annoyed writing this 😬

im gonna be honest the number one reason is because i see it everywhere

the first effect of this is that content depicting xingqiu and chongyun in a nonromantic manner get tagged as xing/yun, which is annoying to me. you can draw 2 characters together in a nonromantic manner and you don't have to tag the ship guys. it's real it's called being friends. the second effect is that there's never any content with chongyun and Other Characters. people are so hung up on him and xingqiu that chongyun almost never exists without xingqiu. like you might notice i have a tag for chongyun and hu tao (mostly platonic) stuff except that there are only 7-8 posts tagged with that, because although the "exorcist and girl who can see ghosts" dynamic would be so cool, nobody seems to think abt that bc almost everything with chongyun includes xingqiu. this also goes for chongyun and xiangling (who canonically makes him his cooling popsicles) and like random other characters whom he Could interact with and be friends with (ayaka and him is a crack friendship i talked about once, and ofc chongyun and xiao). i hate it. xingqiu got his mr worldwide arc with venti and albedo please depict chongyun alone with other friends (it literally doesn't even have to be romantic). of course, this might just be a separate problem that I'm conflating with the ship, but it annoys me. i'm not focusing on xingqiu's side because although fan content for like idk him and yun jin? him and hu tao? albedo? is also super rare, at least that stuff exists in canon.

the second reason is because xingqiu's prankster attitude towards chongyun annoys me

yeah i love my little shit son but idk, it's just annoying when people make him feed chongyun spicy food, play pranks on him that cost chongyun Something (losing face, wasted time, frustration) idk. i guess i don't like that his condition isn't taken seriously. i don't think it's bad to have friends who pull your leg but at least not in a malicious way? like iirc he's implied to have triggered chongyun's yang energy overflows at least a couple times, and it's like . why. why is it played for jokes the kid literally passes out. "(He) needs more practice. Especially… with eating spicy food, haha." bro please do not !! don't trigger his condition just for kicks! xingqiu's other pranks also annoy me, given that i hate being tricked, so some of this might be projection or smth idk, but like idk you can give him good suggestions for where to demon hunt instead of making up shit and then going after him to make up for any costs. it's just annoying i think chongyun gets annoyed but then later forgives him, as friends are, but i cannot imagine them getting together like this. unless it's toxic idk . if they're friends i can give a pass to the pranks and stuff but in a romantic relationship i don't think i could see this kind of dynamic being a good one
