I've noticed that as we welcome in the new year there seem to be two main feelings toward it; anticipation and dread.

There's people who are hopeful that the next year will be a better one and bring them their hearts desires and those who try not to get excited at the idea because of painful experiences past.

I've been both. As a child I was caught in the glamour and dazzle of the New Year's celebrations. The hype that this year can only be better than the last. Later, I became the cynic. I dreaded the new year and often wondered what way the next year would wrap my torment.

Now, I think I stand somewhere in between. I'm not distracted by hype and dazzle but I'm not the pain dwelling pessimist I once was either.

Life is pain, but it is pleasure too. We can't have one without the other. I have come to not only expect, but welcome both.

Sometimes when you're in the thick of it, a situation can seem unbearable but I guess the thing that gets me through it is knowing I've survived everything up and to this point so how bad can this actually be.

I don't normally rant this much but I just wanted to say that I'm grateful for everything this year has given me; the moments of agony, fear, betrayal and the ones of laughter, clarity and freedom as well. It was all an opportunity to discover myself.

And whatever this next year brings, I'm not going into the year cowering anymore. I'm going to walk in, shoulders squared and eyes open.
