Summary: Steve and Bucky are best friends. Always have been. Always will be. Around them, all their friends are falling in love, getting married, having children, living their best lives. Steve and Bucky are dancing around their feelings for each other. With wedding after wedding to attend, it might finally be time for Steve and Bucky to finally address their feelings for each other….

Chapter 5: A Funeral

When he was thirteen and lost his dad, Steve sought Bucky for comfort. He spent every night for weeks after in Bucky’s bed and days when he wasn’t in school beside Bucky on the couch watching movies or playing video games. Now though, he just wants some space from Bucky. He can’t explain why, but he does feel bad about it. He knows his mom was important to Bucky too, and that while he’s also mourning, he’s also just trying to be there for Steve, to support him any way he can. But Steve just can’t allow himself to turn to Bucky this time.

Like a zombie, Steve moves through the motions of his morning routine. He makes a cup of coffee and drinks it while eating some toast, not because he’s actually hungry, but because he knows he needs to eat something. Then he showers and dresses. He’s back in a suit, a simple black one. He tries not to think about how just over a week ago, he was in a suit for a more joyous occasion. Because if he thinks about Becca’s wedding, he thinks of how beautiful his mom looked and then he feels a pang of guilt thinking of how she left early because she was tired.

Steve calls an uber to take him to the funeral home. He has some time before the funeral begins, but he wants to be there early before everyone else.

In the car, he remembers that he has some unread texts from Bucky and opens them.

Bucky [Sunday 6:37pm]: How are you doing?

Bucky [Sunday 7:13pm]: Do you want me to come over before the funeral tomorrow?

Bucky [Sunday 8:42pm]: Good night

Bucky [Monday 7:04am]: Good Morning

Bucky [Monday 7:32am]: Steve, can you just let me know you’re okay

Bucky [Monday 7:44am]: I guess I’ll just see you at the funeral home

Steve doesn’t respond to any of the texts, just puts his phone away and stares out the window, watches as the world carries on without his mother. Rain is falling through Brooklyn, rivulets streaming down the window, making everything beyond the glass blurry. The gray skies match his mood. Steve can’t help but remember that it also rained the day his dad died and wonders if all the worst moments of his life will be accompanied by rain.

well, I can't say I expected the new chapter to feature Idia (metaphorically) going to (metaphorical) hell, getting a pep talk from his (metaphorical) Phantom brother which helps him finally move on once and for all from his brother's death, and (metaphorically) overblotting again to fight his way back out of (metaphorical) hell, only to have his darkest fear (non-metaphorically) come true when his mom goes through his computer and finds all his secret files. but I am glad it did!
