후래삼배(後來三杯) is the repackaged second studio album by fictional boy group Fable. It was released on July 20, 2023, a little over three months after the initial album. In addition to the original eleven songs, it contains three new songs, including title track "그리운 밤 (Nostalgic Night)". It was promoted for three weeks and received one music show win.
It is also the first Fable title track to not incorporate their signature traditional Korean instruments and styling. It was still relatively well-received by fans, with the exception of a few very loud fans on Twitter.

ERA NOTES !
If it weren’t for the single music show win they managed to scrape out—their first in almost three years—Yejun would have his creative freedom revoked. He’s on thin ice for now.
The title track surprised a lot of fans for deviating from their normal concept, yet the reception was generally positive. The sales were good, they seem to be in charge of their music, and the line distribution is the most even it’s ever been.
The glaring exception was a few loud fan accounts hurling around accusations of the group turning their backs on the concept that made them famous, as if their music was ever meant to be fully representative of Korea and its history. The PROTECT FABLE Twitter accounts had their work cut out for them.
This album’s theme is maesil, the Korean green plum. It was obvious from the beginning that it was supposed to be released much earlier. Unripe maesil are harvested in May and June, which is exactly what they did in their variety show.
They also kept talking about it. Mingeun, Haksu, and Yejun in particular could all not shut up. None of them would say exactly why the album was delayed (again), hinting only at recent internal changes and complications.
Mingeun was on Shooting Stars at the same time. He didn’t miss a day of filming for either the show or their promotions, though he looked dead on his feet at their single encore stage. He said he was fine because he memorized the “Nostalgic Night” lyrics and choreography two months ago.
Haksu landed a solo maesil-ju cf. He cracked the top fifty of the individual boy group member brand reputation list for the first time.

Pinocchio's education (3/4)
And here is the last part of my rough translation of Apostolidès’ article “Pinocchio, a male education”. If you want to check the original in French, it is available for free here. [EDIT: Turns out Tumblr doesn't like having posts too long, so I'll need to cut the third post into two...]
Tumblr media
Created in 1940, Walt Disney’s version presents an Americanized Pinocchio. The animated movie changed so much Collodi’s character that it was very coldly received in Italy upon its release. A first change of note: In Disney’s movie, the story is narrated by the Talking Cricket who is now called Jiminy Cricket. In Collodi’s novel, the cricket as just one voice among many – here, he is promoted to the rank of “official conscience” of Pinocchio. In the novel, Collodi has many different external voices speak to the puppet, all transmitting to him through proverbs what were usually advices born of folk-wisdom. This true concerto, played usually by animals (the talking cricket, but also the slug, the pigeon, the parrot and many more), was a double of the parental voice. As such, the entirety of nature gathered around Pinocchio to tell him which path he should follow. With Walt Disney, Jiminy becomes an internalized conscience, he is the superego of the puppet, solemnly ordained by the Blue Fairy (“So she dubbed me Sir Jiminy Cricket, Lord High Keeper of the Knowledge of Right and Wrong”). From the first to the second version, we went from a Pinocchio shaped by exterior elements to another with a more modern sensibility, determined by internal elements. This new Pinocchio does not show any rebellion against the adult world. On the contrary, he impulsively tries to take advantage of it, not able to recognizing in this adult world what is good for him, and what is bad for him. A part of his misfortunes also comes from the fact that his conscience doesn’t know what to choose either – here again, we find ourselves in an era when values were changing.
Since the original context of Collodi’s creation disappears with Walt Disney’s version, the story is now inscribed in a new one: the American values of the early 1940s. Geppetto is not a poor wood-sculptor constantly hungry anymore: he is a lonely craftsman, living comfortably, and who builds toys for children. When the fairy grants him his wish to see his puppet come to life, she just says: “Good Geppetto, you gave so much happiness to others, you deserve to be rewarded”. The fairy appears in the beginning of the movie, while Collodi only introduced her in the fifteenth chapter. When the audience first discovers Pinocchio, Geppetto is almost done with his work, by painting a smile on the wooden face. As such, the puppet does not spring to life on its own: he needs both parents. The “bastard” aspect of the original character, that we highlighted before, is replaced by a conformism making Pinocchio a little boy immediately fit for social order. His father gave him his shape, his outside appearance; his mother gave him his soul and his life. It is also her mother who sets him free from the strings that restrained him: the mechanical education of the father is followed by the mother’s psychological and moral education. Walt Disney’s fairy lacks any ambivalence: she has the same physical and moral traits as the dreamy princesses of the other animated fairytales of the American master, Cinderella and Snow-White. Towards Geppetto, she behaves like a wife – a younger wife, a distant wife, a benevolent wife. She even speaks to him as if he was the child. Meanwhile, towards the puppet, she behaves as a protective mother and as a very moral figure. As soon as Pinocchio asks her what he must do to become a real boy, she lists to him the moral stereotypes of the America of the time: “Prove yourself brave, truthful and unselfish. Be a good son to Geppetto - make him proud of you ! Learn to tell right from wrong. Then, some day, you will wake up and find yourself a real boy”.
Tumblr media
Just like the parental figures, the values offered to Pinocchio lack any ambiguity. The good characters are easily distinguishable from the villains – the villains are always dressed in shabby, poor clothes. For example, the Fox and the Cat that are seemingly ignored by a society of abundance. The same thing is true for the rascals of Pleasure Island: a close-up on their shoes show that they come from the lower class. Their transformation into donkeys is a metaphor to reveal that the only thing they truly bring was workforce.
The tragedy of Pinocchio, a little boy from middle-class, is that due to frequenting them he is threatened with ending up as a lower-class. The movie takes a great care to show who is good and who is evil: all the ambiguous characters, such as Fire-Eater the puppeteer, lose any form of complexity. Within Collodi’s work, he borrowed traits from Bluebeards: when Pinocchio arrives within the theater, the puppets of the commedia dell’ arte see him as a savior. Following his example, the puppets set themselves free from their traditional roles, and made Pinocchio triumph. After thinking about turning him into fire-wood, Fire-Eater forgives Pinocchio and sends him home with five gold coins. With Walt Disney’s, the puppeteer, renamed Stromboli, becomes a former partner of the Fox and the Cat, now reinvested in the business of theater. The animal duo sells him Pinocchio to become the star of his show. The problem introduced now is the one of the child sent too soon within the economic system: Pinocchio embodies the myth of the child-star, freshly created by Hollywood a few decades earlier. Pinocchio is not a child anymore, and yet cannot be recognized as an adult. If on one side he does a work that brings money, on the other he is tricked and exploited by Stromboli.
Within Walt Disney’s work, the conflict of values is located between the world of traditional crafts, and the world of the big industry: the world of Geppetto against the world of the little fat man that turns children into donkey (aka, into the lower class). Pinocchio would not be thinking about leaving his father’s house if the outside world didn’t offer him endless temptations. They are not solely tied to traditional forms of entertainment, such as the puppet theater – they are also focused on the Pleasure Island, where children stay for a few weeks before being metamorphosed into donkeys. On this island, carousels and games can be found, but also plenty of adult activities usually forbidden to children: smoking, drinking, playing billiard… Sexuality is not evoked in the movie, except in a minor way by “inferior” beings, such as Figaro the cat or Cleo the fish. On Pleasure Island, the children can also destroy the things that represent the traditional Western values: the traditions of literature and art. Torn books can be found in the streets, an entire palace is offered to be destroyed. When Candlewick and Pinocchio enter in said palace, a child destroys with an axe a piano ; and if Candlewick lights up his cigar by scratching his match against the Joconde, his friend destroys with a stone and great pleasure a cathedral’s stained glass.
Tumblr media
In 1940, these scenes were clear allusions to the book-burnings that had happened the previous years within Nazi Germany. But, they could also be read as an allegory of the consumerist society that was building itself within the United-States. Geppetto, a product of the traditional Protestant mentality, belongs on a social level to a world that is economically threatened: he doesn’t have any appeal that could keep his son with him. Pinocchio will rather turn towards the outside world, and let the outside images filled the emptiness of his private life.
From a psychological point of view, Pinocchio is torn between the traditional modern (determined and shaped from the inside), and a new model. A new model that encourages imitation, an identity that forms itself with a group of kindred. Pinocchio is as much eager to look like the “others” around him as he is separated from his original nature of puppet. Another reason behind Pinocchio’s quest for a male model in the outside world is Geppetto’s age, and his behavior. The brave man is at the same time an old man, an elder, and a buddy-dad, a friend-father, with which the child plays and dances, but who is no model. And he is not a true husband for the fairy, who rather floats around the male world as a distant by protective mom. Pinocchio can only solve his contradictions by becoming a hero – that is to say by escaping into the extraordinary. By saving Geppetto’s life, by sacrificing himself for him, he takes the place of the absent father. The fairy-mother recognizes this substitution, and as such turns the child into a man, by making him a “real boy”. This promotion happens in the movie in a very symptomatic way, by the acquiring of a new finger on each hand: the puppet of Geppetto only had four fingers on each hand, but when he is transformed, the first thing Pinocchio sees when he wakes up is his human hand.

Call me a fucking idiot but I honestly thought the ending to GDT Pinocchio would be Pinocchio turning human (basically looking like Carlo but more...lanky) after his sacrifice. Have him grow up during the remnants of ww2 and show a montage him and his family. Him reuniting with Candlewick who almost doesn’t recognize him until he hears his voice, sees those eyes and recognizes this strange sense of life. Have them at Geppetto’s grave, alongside Spazzatura and Sebastian’s graves. Then more scenes of a town now filled with the boys that outlived the war, young adults. Pinocchio walking arm in arm with Candlewick as they embrace a new life and era where fascism no longer reigns.
The final scene is Pinocchio telling everything to his grandchildren, especially Giuseppe who is age 10. Giuseppe asks, "Did it happen?"
Pinocchio shows him a blue feather.
From outside, afar, Wood Sprite and Death look on with smiles. Then roll credits.

Expect the unexpected (Fanfic)
New chapter from my main series 🩷
Eugéne was reading the newspaper, she had already read the main headline and was just scrolling to see what else she could find,
… the Stalker formerly known as Parrot has finally been apprehended, as it’s known, this stalker was the partner of the great Stalker Alidoro who unfortunately was murdered by Parrot although for now, the reason is still unknown. Since he refuses to explain his motives.
He is being detained and his trial will….
The sound of the bell of her shop opening was heard, she looked up to see that Pinocchio had entered.
“Hi Eugéne! I have something to show you” Pinocchio was holding a sword in his hand, the sword he had found on the underground of Hotel Krat, he had finally found time to show it to her.
He handed her the weapon, and she analyzed it carefully, very carefully, she was silent while analyzing every detail.
“This was made in the 1500s, I can tell by how it was welded, although by those standards it’s a little different, the handle has the same materials even if it’s not a traditional handle, but the sword is made of something completely unusual for the era, or any era really, it’s made of Damascus steel to find one of these is so rare”
Eugéne was completely entranced by the weapon, “Someone made this with a lot of care, these details are so unique, it must have taken months to build this”
Pinocchio can see that Eugéne has a big smile on her face, she seems to be in love with that sword.
“Do you want to keep it here with you?” Pinocchio smiled, “I still have some of my other weapons at home and if I ever need it, I can just ask you”
Pinocchio only kept very few of the weapons he found since they were taking up too much space at home, so he sold most of them, the extra cash was good to buy a few things for himself without the need for his allowance money, although he did give the dragon sword to Eugéne as a gift, she loved it. He remembered when he was organizing what to keep and what to get rid of.
“Son, why do you have an umbrella with the rest of your weapons?” His father looked confused, even more confused when he explained how greatly it works.
“You know, you could also have used it back then to not get wet” Geppetto had seen his son come back to Hotel Krat completely covered wet due to the rain. But as we know, Pinocchio tends to not take the best care of his clothes.
As for his legion arms, Pinocchio kept all of them, eventually, he did find more calibers here and there and managed to fully upgrade them all.
“Hopefully it’s not much to ask but yeah I would love to add this to my collection” She makes weapons but also collects them, she has a special place in the back of her shop and has them displayed.
They were casually talking for a few minutes when Pinocchio noticed the newspaper, Eugéne could tell he was reading the main headline.
“It’s crazy, right? I can’t believe a serial killer is running around, and they still haven’t caught them” Eugéne knows better than to trust the Krat’s police but at least when it came to something like this they should put in the effort, the killer is leaving the bodies in exposed places and leaving messages, at least that should give them a hint, “For some reason, Krat has been feeling a little more unsafe lately”
“Well, yesterday someone tried to steal flowers from me” Pinocchio recounted what had happened.
“Seriously, trying to steal flowers? The nerve of some people” Eugéne sighed, “You know the other day I went outside my home for five minutes, just for a trip to the store and back, and on my way back someone tried grabbing my bag”
“What?!” Pinocchio couldn't believe it.
“Don’t worry, everything was fine, everything happened so fast but a stalker was walking nearby and that seemed to scare them, they stopped as soon as they saw the stalker”
“You got really lucky but be a little more careful next time” Gemini was also worried, if this happened so close to her home, he couldn’t imagine if she were to take a long walk somewhere else.
“I guess I had a little guardian Angel following me” She smiled, it made her feel safe that someone or something could be watching over her.
“What mask were they wearing?” Pinocchio is curious, he doesn’t want to be a stalker but he does like and find interesting what they do.
“It was a mastiff dog mask, or at least I think that’s what it was, I’m more of a cat person” Eugéne has more experience and knowledge when it comes to cats rather than dogs, “I saw that they were a man since he stared at me for at least a minute before leaving”
She found it a little odd but in a way, all stalkers are a little weird and she was extremely grateful for the help. She almost wanted to ask where he got that sword, Eugéne was sure that it was a sword from the east.
“I wonder if someone has a cricket mask” Gemini has never seen someone having bug masks.
“Who knows Gemini, there are so many stalkers out there, maybe one of them is a fan of crickets” Eugéne touched Gemini’s little head with her finger, giving him gentle headpats.
“Pinocchio why don’t you learn a few things from her instead of shaking me each time you get mad?”
Pinocchio smiled at Gemini quickly trying to grab him with his hand but Gemini jumped away to Eugéne’s shoulder.
“I knew you were going to do that you brat” Gemini chirped.
They were having a great time, Eugéne closed her shop for an hour each day as her break, at it was time for that, so she decided that it would be a good idea if both of them went together to have a little snack.
They saw an interesting shop that sold pastries and sweets, and each one of them ordered the same one, eclairs with orange flavor, apparently, it had a fun secret ingredient and they wanted to try it out, it seemed fun, Pinocchio ate his first, too excited to try it, as he ate it, he felt a crunchy sound, it was odd but it must be some sort of edible decoration so he swallowed it. Once he was done eating, he felt a little odd.
“Pinocchio you shouldn’t eat food so fast,” Gemini said, now back im his cage.
“No, this is different, I know how to explain but I feel weird” Pinocchio doesn’t know how to explain it, “Almost as if I have felt this way before but…”
“Mmm” Eugéne had a bad feeling about this, so she cut in half her pastry and a little rock came from inside.
A disruption crystal.
Needless to say, the three of them were completely panicking, Pinocchio had swallowed it whole and every minute he passed was vital.
Eugéne grabbed Pinocchio’s shoulders, “Pinocchio listen to me, take this”
She handed Pinocchio something that looked like a pocket watch, but it was more of a strange necklace.
“At the union, all workers are given this, I don’t work there anymore but thank God I kept mine, it can send you to a special stargazer that’s inside the premises”
It’s a stargazer that’s just outside the factory, it’s given to all workers in case of an emergency.
“Quick, go and find your father” Eugéne knows how to work in the most stressful of situations, she knows how to keep her composure, it’s a skill that takes time to develop when working on hard labor like this, even more so when in your profession mistakes can have big consequences.
Pinocchio nodded and activated the device, Eugéne had no choice but to return to her shop, she was worried sick but she needed to keep calm, she believed in Geppetto’s skills.
—-
He entered the building, he got yelled at for entering but he didn’t care, he remembered where his father’s office was but unfortunately, he wasn’t there, he was panicking even more, he was starting to feel worse now, he grabbed his bag and pulled a small bottle from the inside a Purification Ampoule, thankfully he always carries one just in case but that’s not going to stop it as long as that stone is inside his body.
After asking around frantically he knew where his father was and rushed to get there, it was a testing room, and Pinocchio opened the door with force almost breaking it.
“Father!”
“Geppetto your puppet son can’t be here” Conrad was there and he didn’t look happy, but truthfully he never looks happy unless he is taunting others.
Pinocchio rushed to his father’s side, he was talking too fast to explain but Geppetto managed to understand, his face becoming pale. He grabbed Pinocchio’s hand and dragged him out of there.
“This is an emergency, I’m borrowing one of the rooms for this!” Geppetto shouted at his coworkers and took his son to another room that’s used for testing, rooms like this have everything he needs.
He told Pinocchio to take off his shirt and to lie down on the table.
“Sorry son but this is going to hurt” Geppetto was apologetic but he couldn't sugarcoat this.
Geppetto put on some gloves and opened Pinocchio’s chest cavity, his heart was exposed as well as his other organs, Geppetto was nervous because of the unique situation his son was in. He looked at Pinocchio’s stomach, his living organ just like all the others, mixed with the mechanical parts. But God answered his prayers because the stone wasn’t inside Pinocchio’s stomach, but rather stuck on a gear next to it, he doesn’t know how that works but he isn’t going to question this good luck he had.
He grabbed some tweezers and pulled out the crystal, Pinocchio giving out a cry of pain; Geppetto set it aside somewhere else, on the other end of the room as being near it was still dangerous for Pinocchio. The thing being inside ended up disrupting the flow of some of the mechanisms and Geppetto could tell that the human part of his son’s body was trying to compensate for the problem.
Geppetto took a deep breath and repaired him just as he did when his son was in his original state, he concentrated as to not think about the organs and blood around him, as long as he didn’t touch them it should be fine, the task was hard, but he went into autopilot, not touching even an inch of his living body.
Pinocchio was quiet, trying not to cry in pain, it did hurt a lot and he started to feel exhausted, slowly the pain started to go away, he closed his eyes and ended up falling asleep.
Geppetto was already done with the inside, but he did fix some small details that had nothing to do with the issue, nothing really that important in the grand scheme of things but he is a perfectionist and his son deserves the best care. After closing Pinocchio he took a sigh of relief and left him resting for a moment.
He turned to look at the cricket “Gemini keep an eye on him will you?”
Geppetto grabbed the crystal and put it inside a container, he made his way towards the door, he was going to have to dispose of it, and he was also going to have to find the other members of the board and explain why he had to leave with his son, It would be easy if Venigni was here but he is attending to his other job matters so he isn’t at the union today.
He opened the door, looks like Geppetto didn’t have to look for any of them, as all the other members of the board and even other coworkers were just outside the door, badly acting as if they weren’t trying to overhear how he was fixing up his son.
Really? They can’t even try to be a little more discreet?
Geppetto was so done with this “Excuse me but, I’m going to have to leave work early”
“It’s okay Geppetto don’t worry about it” One of the men said, “You know if you need any help regarding your son-“
“Thank you very much but he is my son and I will treat him himself” Geppetto stared intensely at the man for a few seconds and he took the hint, all the others took the hint as well.
“Would you mind giving me that Crystal Geppetto?” The subdirector of the union said, “I need to check how that store got their hands on it, they aren’t supposed to be available for the public”
That’s right, they are used in many things related to labor, the crystals are for testing certain types of resistances and even communication systems, as well as testing puppet endurance. They are important and lately, there has been a shortage of disruption crystals.
“And it’s not harmful to humans but I’m still sure that’s a health violation”
Geppetto is glad that he can count on the subdirector for his help, their work relationship is always purely professional but the subdirector of the union is a nice man.
Even if he is nosey just like all the other ones, at least knowing these people are dying to know how his son was built and how they envy his skills makes him feel a little proud of himself, at least it distracts him from the stress for a moment.
He didn’t want to wake up Pinocchio but he had to, his son can’t be resting here. So they both went back home, and as they left they could hear the others talking.
“He can eat? How is that possible?”
“The puppet was crying too, I wonder what Geppetto did so that could happen”
“Did anyone manage to overhear what tools Geppetto was using? That could give us a hint”
“I think I heard some sort of clock? What part would need that?”
“Not sure what springs he is using but they definitely don't sound like any of the ones we use here”
“Hey, if we are all here then who is in the other testing room?”
While father and son were leaving they started hearing one of the emergency alarms, Geppetto rolled his eyes, officially that was not his problem.
——-
Pinocchio was okay, just in his bed resting, falling asleep again, first Geppetto called Eugéne to tell her that Pinocchio was okay, she was so relieved, next he called Antonia since as his mother she should know this happened.
“That was a big scare, but thankfully everything was solved without much issue,” Antonia said from the other line.
“Yes, I’m happy everything was solved” Replied Geppetto.
There was a pause, no one talking for a few seconds.
“Geppetto are you okay?”
“No”
She figured that it must be the case, Pinocchio being in danger kept happening more often and it was obvious how stressed he was while hearing him on the other line. Maybe one would assume that considering all the danger Pinocchio has gone through Geppetto would have gotten used to it by now, but that’s not the case, no one ever wants to see their child in danger.
At this point is also believable that the universe must have something against poor Pinocchio considering his bad luck.
“Antonia I know that he is going to be okay but now I feel like an even worse father, I was sending him to do all those dangerous things before and-”
“Geppetto stop it, this was an accident and no one could have seen this coming” Antonia takes a brief pause, “And as I told you before, I am your shoulder to cry on but you know what we talked about last time”
“I know, I know, the appointment is already set for the day after tomorrow, I was going to tell Pinocchio about this today but then this happened” Geppetto also wonders if he should ask the doctor for medical advice on Pinocchio's human health.
“You can still tell him, just when he wakes up” Antonia was trying to reassure him.
“Can you please come I think I need your support because honestly, I’m too stressed right now”
Before Antonia could say something Geppetto spoke up first.
Geppetto was a little embarrassed “And because… I’m bad at explaining”
Antonia smiled. “I’ll be there soon”
——
“So that’s how you got electrocuted”
They were making small talk while waiting for Pinocchio to wake up.
“But Polendina is supposed to be waterproof how did that happen?” Geppetto knows that it doesn’t make sense for that to occur.
Antonia just blushes, “Well we were sort of experimenting and-
“You know what? Never mind I don’t want to know”
“Hey you are the one that brought up this topic first by mentioning-“
The sound of Pinocchio opening the door of his room was heard, and both of them immediately stopped talking about that.
“Son, how are you feeling?” Geppetto asked sweetly.
“Better” Pinocchio said in a drowsy voice, still sleepy.
When Pinocchio noticed that his mother was there he smiled, probably thinking that she came to spoil him because he wasn’t feeling well. Not entirely untrue since she is planning to do that but first they need to have this conversation.
“Pinocchio in two days you and your father are going to see a doctor” Antonia began to speak, “Just to see how you are doing”
“Oh, okay” Pinocchio was still smiling.
“Son this is a special kind of doctor” Geppetto paused for a moment, hopefully, he could explain well this time, “You know how you have gone through a lot of hardships right?”
“Um… yes?” Pinocchio knew this was going somewhere.
“And I know that you have a hard time talking about it and prefer to write down your feelings but just this time maybe it can help you,” His father said.
Both of them explained why he was going and why his father was going as well.
Antonia smiled at Pinocchio “Dear you don’t have to keep going if you don’t want to, no one is forcing you, but it doesn’t hurt to see if it helps at least once”
Pinocchio nodded, it looked like he understood well, Geppetto was glad he asked Antonia for help. He doesn’t know what his deal with explaining is, he explains perfectly well other things like when he teaches him about math, history, literature, etc.
Pinocchio put his two index fingers together “Can we go see my pony?”
It was only 3 pm so they still had plenty of time to go and have a visit and Pinocchio should have a good reward for what he went through today.

“Meet Pinocchio” session at G-STARS 2022
LoP Art Director Noh Chang-kyu is sharing some of his concept arts for Lies of P, the origin of the handsome boy “Pinocchio” and cool looking uncle “Geppetto” . The article: from Shunsuke Yasuda of GameWatch The key concept here is Beautiful but strange.  The core theme is inspired by many sources, such as movies like “Blade Runner 2049″, “Westworld”, “Ghost in the Shell”, “Pan’s Labyrinth”, “Crimson Peak”, “Sleepy Hollow”, etc. At first, Director Noh said he was using the media as the reference, but since they want to make it unique and original, he also did  some researches himself. Director Noh was fascinated by the Belle Epoque era, and has knowledge about said time period, and thus this was picked as the main theme to work around.  (More information is in the article, in particular the high quality photos)
Tumblr media
(At the beginning of the project, it was said to be “Soulslike” and horror with no further information. Later, the team picked 19th century as their reference period. Their concept is going to be based on ‘sci-fi’ + ‘gothic horror’ +  “Belle Epoque aesthetic” = Belle Epoque Punk)  [note by me: With a high quality photo, you can see that P has his right eye opened but his left eye closed/blinded]
Tumblr media
(Design of the safe vault. The safe vault is 180cm in height. Using the safe as reference, it is confirmed that P is taller than 180cm and can be around 185-200cm)
Tumblr media
(Concept art for P/Pinocchio. He is a ‘beautiful boy’ living in a strange world, who seems to have left his childhood era behind)
Tumblr media
(Geppetto is an interesting character because his face is based on by Director Noh’s father-in-law. Director Noh’s wife is Colombian and her descent is Spanish-origin. Although in-game Geppetto is now much different than the man he is based on, some resemblance can still be seen. It is noted that Geppetto is supposed to be taller than his son. [note by me: oh so that’s why he has to duck his head when he is stepping out of the carriage, in the trailer] Also:  장인 which means “father-in-law/ wife’s father” and “craftsman” share the same pronunciation as ‘jang-in’) This must be a call of destiny lololol
Tumblr media
(The Blue hair fairy is reinterpreted as the character “Sofia”. No artworks showed so far. Interestingly, it is said that the devs have considered the story to be about an alchemist coming to a new town, at some point. I wonder if Sofia is going to be the character to convey that plotline)
Tumblr media
(Venigni’s concept art. Interestingly, the pin showed his initial as ‘B’ instead of ‘V’ like in the finalized concept. So he was supposed to be “Benigni Lorenzini”? I supposed he is an Italian businessman who came to Krat, that later brought wealth and prosperity to the city through the production of puppets. Also, he has a mole under his right eye which is not visible as much in game)

When You Wish Upon a Star by Elizabeth Lim Disney-Hyperion
“Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight . . . ” so begins the wish that changes everything—for Geppetto, for the Blue Fairy, and for a little puppet named Pinocchio. The Blue Fairy isn’t supposed to grant wishes in the small village of Pariva, but something about this one awakens some long-buried flicker within. Perhaps it’s the hope she senses beneath the old man’s loneliness.
Or maybe it’s the fact that long ago, before she was the Blue Fairy, she was a young woman named Chiara from this very village, one with a simple wish: to help others find happiness. Her sister Ilaria always teased her for this, for she had big dreams to leave their sleepy village and become a world-renowned opera singer. The two were close, despite their differences. While Ilaria would give anything to have a fairy grant her wish, Chiara didn’t believe in the lore for which their village was famous.
Forty years later, Chiara, now the Blue Fairy, defies the rules of magic to help an old friend. But she’s discovered by the Scarlet Fairy, formerly Ilaria, who, amid a decades-long grudge, holds the transgression against her sister. They decide to settle things through a good old-fashioned bet, with Pinocchio and Geppetto’s fate hanging in the balance. -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads

Blood Debts by Terry J. Benton-Walker Tor Teen
Thirty years ago, a young woman was murdered, a family was lynched, and New Orleans saw the greatest magical massacre in its history. In the days that followed, a throne was stolen from a queen.

Cristina, once a talented and dedicated practitioner of Generational magic, has given up magic for good. An ancient spell is what killed their father and she was the one who cast it. Cristina and Clement used to be each other’s most trusted confidant and friend, now they barely speak. But if they have any hope of discovering who is coming after their family, they’ll have to find a way to trust each other and their family's magic, all while solving the decades-old murder that sparked the still-rising tensions between the city’s magical and non-magical communities. Best Animated Movies on Netflix for a Visual Feast
1. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

Sequels released over a decade after the first film are always a gamble, but Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was one of multiple films from 2022 (Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water) that actually improved upon its predecessor. Eleven years after the first Puss in Boots, the eponymous rascally cat has now burned through eight of his nine lives on his various adventures, reteaming with Kitty Softpaws in pursuit of the Last Wish, which would restore his lives. Along the way, he tries to outrun Goldilocks — hoping to attain the Last Wish for herself — and a menacing wolf who mysteriously stalks Puss. Like other DreamWorks films post-Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the blend of 2-D and 3-D is striking in its visual texture, particularly in action sequences, but its darkly authentic themes of anxiety and the value of friendship resonate most of all.
2. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017)
Tumblr media
EW grade: B+ (read the review)
Director: David Soren
Cast: Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, Thomas Middleditch, Jordan Peele, Kristen Schaal

The wildly popular Captain Underpants book series has kept kids entertained since 1997, but it wasn't until 20 years later that the tighty-whities-clad hero made it to the big screen. The First Epic Movie centers on George and Harold, fourth-grader best friends who create the Captain Underpants comic book and hypnotize their strict principal into becoming the superhero — who doesn't actually have superpowers. Kid-friendly without being too mind-numbing to their parents, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie has "charm to spare," praises EW's critic, noting it works "mostly because it never tries to be more or less than what it is." It also spawned a series on Netflix, The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, which ran from 2018 to 2020.
3. The Angry Birds Movie (2016)
Tumblr media
EW grade: B (read the review)
Director: Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly
Cast: Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage
While it may be damning with faint praise to give credit to The Angry Birds Movie for not being a total disaster...it really could've been much worse. Based on the wildly popular app of the same name, the film follows Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), a talking bird who comes to suspect that his island's new pig inhabitants have malicious intent. Your mileage may vary depending on your tolerance for punny/juvenile humor, but as EW's review notes, the film "delivers a mildly diverting mix of winky meta-jokes and moral lessons, cannily aimed at both the next generation of tiny consumers and their more sophisticated parents.
4. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022)
Tumblr media
Director: Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson
Cast: Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann, Burn Gorman, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton
Codirectors Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson transport the classic story of Pinocchio to World War II-era Italy in this meticulously crafted stop-motion animated film. Following the death of his young son, carpenter Geppetto cuts down a tree and carves a wooden boy, who is subsequently brought to life and dubbed Pinocchio. As the boy ventures to the outside world, he is met with dark forces that attempt to use and corrupt him, all against the backdrop of Benito Mussolini's reign as leader of Fascist Italy. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a darker take on the tale compared to the well-known Disney adaptation (which also received a far-inferior live-action remake in 2022). From the fraught setting to the detailed creature designs, del Toro and Gustafson create a distinct world while providing valuable life lessons to viewers of all ages. The film became the first Netflix production to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
5. The Sea Beast (2022)
Tumblr media
Director: Chris Williams
Cast: Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste
Lights, camera, VPNaction! Elevate your movie nights with NordVPN. 🎥🔒secure your connection and Download NordVPN . Click now to unlock global cinematic thrills!
A brave orphan girl named Maisie stows away aboard a ship of sea monster hunters in The Sea Beast, helmed by Big Hero 6's co-director Chris Williams. The sailors are renowned for their hunting abilities, though their status is threatened by their society's admiral, who wishes to replace them. They go out on one last hunt to track down a powerful sea beast called the Red Bluster, but, as Maisie soon discovers, the creatures may not have the kind of malicious intent for which they've come to be known. With dazzling colors, fast-paced thrills, and classical storytelling, it's easy to see why The Sea Beast became Netflix's most watched animated original film as of October 2022, according to the streamer. The film also earned a Best Animated Feature nomination at the Oscars, following a wave of critical praise.

ya know puppets cant have babies with each other for obvious reasons but that doesnt mean they cannot build a brand new mechanoid by their own hands and call them their "child"👶. Thats what I see dark messiah!P and his evil puppet darling doing
they've always wanted a child to call their own, so using their own knowledge and the reports left over by mr. geppetto, they start making their own puppet children in their very likeness.
a daughter that had p's freckles but your eye color.
a son that shared your hair color but had azure eyes like p.
and they would be beautiful, so achingly beautiful as all four of them would come together as a happy family. all mechanoids would keep worship the ground p and his beloved family walked on.
a new era was coming, where automatons all come together in a near perfect world: one where no one is inflicted with the plague, or any other illness for that matter.
yes, everything was coming together perfectly, so perfectly that pinocchio can't bring himself to regret his decision of rejecting his chance to become human, fully embracing his mechanoid heart as he hoped to stay forever with you, his beloved queen and wife, along with your children, in perfect bliss.

Pinocchio (2022) Review
Personal Score: 7.5/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 30%
Rating: PG
I must admit, as far as this fairly recent trend of remaking Disney movies into live action films goes, I am a big fan. I realize that this may be an unpopular opinion and might go so far as to devalue my opinion when it comes to my reviews, but it is the truth. As someone who was raised upon the magic that was and are the films of Walt Disney, I can't help but continue to wish upon that particular star. Despite my rather positive attitude towards the live-action Disney remakes (though I would hesitate to call them remakes, rather retellings of popular stories), I put off watching this one for quite a while.
The original Disney Pinocchio movie was a bit before my time, being released in 1940, so it was never one of my favorites. As a child I was more attracted to the era of Disney films known as the ‘renaissance’ as well as the ‘post-renaissance’: Mulan, Aladdin, Hercules, Tarzan, Atlantis, etc. I also retain distant memories of a faint childhood fear when watching the original Disney Pinocchio, specifically regarding the scenes of Pleasure Island. These factors culminated in my not being very keen to see this new movie right away.
It wasn’t until I saw a scene from the movie on TikTok that I thought maybe I was misjudging it. As I was scrolling through my for you page, I suddenly come across a beautifully rendered scene of a magical and awe-inspiring blue fairy, bringing life to a wooden puppet. I knew that I couldn’t put it off any longer, I had to know if this movie was worth watching or if perhaps just a single beautifully put together scene had played its part and tricked me into watching the film. I had experienced this once before with the Amazon movie Cinderella (2021), where in there is a scene with Cinderella’s fairy godmother (father?) played by Billy Porter that is spectacular yet is not enough to cover up the misery that is the rest of the movie. I am glad to report that Pinocchio (2022) does not repeat this pattern.
The eponymous Pinocchio is voiced by 13-year-old Benjamin Evan Ainsworth who does a marvelous job at bringing the childlike innocence yet trusting naivete to the character. Ainsworth’s voice goes a long way towards making me really believe that the character on the screen is a wooden puppet that has been brought to life and wishes to make his papa proud. Throughout the movie the character of Pinocchio is a sympathetic one, merely a babe in the woods (more like a babe made out if wood) that strives to do his best when faced with judgmental, deceptive, sinister, and greedy people who all wish to take advantage of the little wooden miracle.
Tom Hanks portrays the elderly woodcarver Geppetto, much to my surprise. It took me over half the movie to realize that the Castaway star was playing Pinocchio’s father, which either says more about my great obliviousness or Hanks’ greater skills as an actor. Either way I will say, while I thought the character of Geppetto was portrayed very well in this film, a sad lonely old man who only wants nothing more than a family to call his own, once I realized who was playing the role, I couldn’t help but only see the actor Tom Hanks an no longer Geppetto. But like I said there were times, particularly near the beginning, when I found myself feeling genuine sorrow towards the old man’s circumstances. Hanks really turned this mostly joke character from the original film into a sympathetic one.
One of my two favorite parts of this movie is the wonderful acting of Cynthia Erivo who plays the Blue Fairy. Like I said before, her scene is what originally captured me an inspired me to even watch the film in the first place. And while the Blue Fairy was one of the best parts of this movie you may notice that I said ‘scene’ as in one singular scene. This is the most devastating part of the movie, the tragic underutilization of the most wonderous character in the entire movie. Despite the Blue Fairy appearing twice in the original Disney movie (to no great effect), this time around the Blue Fairy is only there to deliver the inciting incident, meaning Pinocchio’s life, and no more is seen of her. Erivo gives such a beautiful performance, lending the legendry Blue Fairy a sense of wisdom, elegance, and power that is much improved from the character’s 1940 counterpart.
Another showing of magnificent acting is what I may say is the second-best part of a wonderful movie, the performance of Kayanne Lamaya. Playing an all-new character Fabiana, a differently-abled ballerina that works for the greedy Stromboli yet has dreams of her own. Fabiana is accompanied by a beautifully animated puppet named Sabina that was always pleasant to look at as it moved across the screen. Lamaya performs the best song in the entire movie, which, to be honest isn’t a high bar as many of the songs are lack luster and don’t add much. That being said, ‘I Will Always Dance’ performed by Lamaya is leaps and bounds beyond any of the other songs in this movie, bringing depth to her character as well as joyous levity to the plot. As before, my only complaint about this character is that she does not appear in the film more.
Lastly, I will say, that over all I would recommend at least giving this film a chance. It is beautifully rendered, with just enough color to bring the magic of the world to life. I found myself with my eyes glued to the screen the entire time despite already knowing the beats of the story as this was a fresh take on the classic tale. There is enough that is different so as to appeal to a current audience while still keeping enough of the original story and improving upon it. I will say that for all its excellent qualities it faults in having rather boring and unnecessary characters appear too much while cutting down the screen time of the truly remarkable and interesting characters more than it perhaps should. Ultimately the film left a lasting mark on me in a way that the original Disney movie never did.
From the media to my mind to your screen.

Disenchantment and Fairytales
Tumblr media
By now, we’re well aware that Disenchantment is to the fantasy genre what Futurama is to the Sci-Fi genre. It’s made many references to Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and of course, Disney. But a less glaringly obvious inclusion in the realm of Disenchantment is its use of fairytales, as they often exist only in sight gags or very minor elements. Take for instance the glass slippers Bean refuses to wear for her coronation in the finale for season 3, or Elfo’s Snow White style glass coffin actually being an aquarium. The only overt fairytale is Hansel and Gretel, which even then is given a very dark spin with the twins being cannibals who imprisoned the witch and used the gingerbread house to attract kids and other people to cannibalize. So, I wanted to examine the use of fairytales and how they might be used, played with, or subverted by Disenchantment.
Tumblr media
The Wicked Step-Mother
Most noteworthy in the fairytales like Snow White and also Hansel and Gretel, in the original versions of both stories, the wicked mother is actually the biological mother of the heroes. But in later renditions, it was altered to vilify step-mothers. Thanks largely to the Brothers Grimm popularizing these stories with evil step-mothers, they were driven to make these alterations due to their own perception of motherhood as pure and sacred, making the step-mother a wicked obstacle to the wholesome nature of the nuclear family. Disenchantment heavily leans on this trope, mostly with Dagmar resembling the wicked mother from Snow White. Like the Evil Queen from the fairytale, Dagmar is a smolderingly beautiful queen with a knack for witchcraft and sorcery. Oona meanwhile is the deconstruction of the Evil Stepmother trope, as Bean comes to recognize that she put her birth mother on an undeserving pedastal, and only comes to appreciate how cool Oona was too late, only seeing Oona as a true friend once she and Zog were divorced.
Tumblr media
The Princess and The Knight
Lady Bowmore is the bee knight that Bean meets in Steamland, and she even calls herself Bean’s “Knight in Rusted Armor”. The only thing we really know about Lady Bowmore is that she drives a mechanical horse-car, is very helpful and flirtateous with Bean, and she wears a bee medallion. While this is a personal theory, I wonder if the bee blimp that Bean took back to Dreamland belonged to Lady Bowmore, which would mean that she’s connected to Gunderson Airships, and possibly in allegiance with Alvin Gundersen and the plot to kill Zog. Based on the story conventions and Disenchantment’s general tone, the fact that she calls herself Bean’s knight in rusted armor implies that while she’ll seem like a heroic helper at first, the apparent chivalry isn’t as clean and pretty as it seems, and she’ll turn against Bean somewhere down the line as a deconstruction of the gallant heroic knightly figure. However, I could be wrong and applying a cynical reading, when instead the trope will play rather straight, and Lady Bowmore will be the stock gallant knight who rescues, aids, and defends the fair princess, possibly even defecting from Steamland to serve Bean as the new Penderghast and captain of the royal guards.
Tumblr media
Pinnochio
So far, Freckles has only been in three episodes. He showed up in a cameo in the pilot, and then appeared in earnest at the end of season 3. Freckles is clearly mischevious and very probably dangerous. For starters, the shop is literally selling haunted puppets, and the shop keeper (who is very likely Dagmar) says that she can’t part with Freckles because he’s a very naughty boy who is like a son to her, much like how Pinocchio is like a son to Geppetto. What’s more, in the book version of the fairytale, Pinocchio is a mischievous little brat whose actions get Geppetto arrested and kills his conscience. We also know that Dagmar told Zog to let her into his mind in exchange for being let out of the asylum, so this access to his headspace could have something to do with why he was drawn to Freckles specifically. There’s also a sign in the shop that reads “Replace your Child”, which Pinocchio was a substitution for Geppetto who had no biological children of his own and replaced that void in his life with a puppet he made. This stands to reason that Freckles is somehow going to threaten Bean’s place in Zog’s heart in one way or another. Another sign reads “Need a Friend? This Won’t Help” again alluding to how dangerous Freckles is going to be. When buying the puppet, Freckles says “Don’t you see? He talks through me. But it won’t be free.” Fairytales have a longstanding tradition of “paying for something in an unconventional way”.

Beauty and the Beast
I’ll admit, when Merkimer first turned into a pig, I assumed he was downgraded to a running gag side character, but season 3′s episode Hey, Pig Spender shows us a miraculous bit of character growth for Merkimer. He gives up his chance to be human in order to save Bean, and in that moment, I realized he wasn’t just a man turned into a pig as a joke. Merkimer is the Beast. Like Merkimer, Beast is usually depicted as a cruel, selfish, or vain man, who is changed through magic into a hideous creature in order to learn a lesson. While the Disney version is more similar to a wolf, most of the older illustrated versions depict the beast as either having the head of a boar, or being otherwise pig-like. In fact, the fairytale even has a related fairytale called The Pig King, which likewise features a handsome prince turned into a pig and only becoming human again once he obtains the love of a woman. With only 3 seasons so far, it’s hard to say whether Bean will eventually come to love Merkimer as he keeps growing and changing or if he will slowly win the heart of another woman (or man), Merkimer’s character arc is clearly setting up that he’ll become human again when he’s completed his redemption arc and become a better person. In a sense, he’ll stop being a pig when he stops thinking and acting like a pig.

The Little Mermaid
Like her fairytale counterpart, Mora gives up her home and family to pursue her passion, only to find it’s not what she expected it to be, and find herself regretting the choice she’s made to leave it all behind. The Little Mermaid wanted to see the land of the humans, and also longed for an immortal soul that she might live forever in Heaven. Mora meanwhile desired to be an actress, but due to her tail, wasn’t given a fair shake. This also mirrors the real life casting discrepancies of the early film era, when non-white actors had a hard time finding roles, and even the few actors of color who did manage to get roles were still largely disrespected by the industry at large. Due to the original tragic ending of the fairytale, I half suspect that Mora too will get an unhappy ending with Bean, likely due to how distant their kingdoms are, or how different their biology is. However, considering how much merfolk imagery appears in the Dreamland Castle, it is highly possible that Mora is Bean’s soul mate and ultimate love interest for the series. Mora’s song, though short, all but confirms that Mora is not gone from the story. When Bean finds herself caught in a war, Mora will appear and take Bean’s side, and fight beside her, likely as an archer like the mermaid in the constellation.

11, 20, 43, 55, 56, & 98 for the weird asks? -megs 💙
hello megs! thank you for asking @igarbagecannoteven
11. what you have for breakfast on an average day? either two slices of toast with jam or a bowl of cereal depending on the mood. lily sent me raspberry peach jam and it is the best jam i have ever had in my life and has ruined all other jams/jellies for me but i only have a jar left so i'm trying to make it go far.
20. preferred place to write (i.e., in a note book, on your laptop, sketchpad, post-it notes, etc.)? i thought this meant physical location (the right corner of the couch in the living room, i am there right now) but I write fic on google docs on my laptop! i absolutely hate writing on my phone, i would rather not write at all than write on my phone, and I do some writing in notebooks but the vast majority is google docs via my laptop.
43. hoodie, leather jacket, cardigan, jean jacket or bomber jacket? hoodie! i wear so many hoodies. i live in sweatshirts. cardigans make me a little nervous because i'm not the best at figuring out what shirt i can wear that will go with them, and conceptually i like jean jackets and bomber jackets but i do not have one
55. favorite fairy tale? oooooooo ummmmmm let's see. maybe red riding hood. i had a period of time where i was really into fairy tales (my sister and i wrote a movie where they were all jumbled, i wrote a play where fairy tales and nusery rhymes are jumbled) OH WAIT as i was writing this i remembered rumpelstiltskin. i do really like that one. also the youth circus i'm obsessed with did a summer show with the concept that baba yaga shakes up a whole bunch of fairy tales and they have to relive them and 1. geppetto had my favorite line in the whole thing because the rumpelstiltskin princess was asking if anyone had seen her baby and he was up on the tightrope and was like "have you seen my pinocchio? i lost my baby too" and i almost cried. genuinely. 2. they created a new princess named apricot crumble who was best friends with jack of jack and the beanstock (they had a Really Cool duo straps routine) 4. the youth circus did a show based on grimm fairy tales specifically in 2011 that was my first exposure to circus in general and my favorite routine in that was the silks routine that red riding hood did in the woods 4. not related to the circus but on the topic of baba yaga: we adapted baba yaga for the arts carnival with the nightmare internship so now i have so many conflicting feelings about baba yaga lol
anyway. all that to say: i'm pretty sure it's rumpelstiltskin, but i also really like red riding hood
56. favorite tradition? well since Christmas is coming up, i love the tradition of watching home alone 1 or 2 on christmas eve! these days i have to force my siblings into it but i refuse to let this tradition die.
98. favorite historical era? okay so not to be That Person but the world wars are super fascinating to me. specifically the political climate that led to and then came out of wwi!!!! that's my jam!!! so world war i is my favorite event to learn about, but as far as era, probably the 1940s. i did a presentation on 1940s fashion for my costume design class and i really enjoyed learning about the era
ask me weird questions that say a lot

Thoughts on ‘The Lightning Warrior’
Well... I’m well aware that I don’t usually do these episode reviews of sorts... but I’ve been looking forward to this episode for an awfully long time, and ultimately enjoyed it enough that I felt I should share my thoughts here.
Disclaimer: Any thoughts presented below are purely my own opinion. Some of those opinions will be drawn from scenes that take place in series, or my own personal interpretations on what may or may not have gone on behind the scenes, but they are still only my opinions.
Also, one part of this review will delve into VERY DARK elements and implications, so if you’d rather not see them, please, DO NOT click the read more.
I apologize about it, but... well... it’s just related to a conclusion I came to regarding the episode, and I didn’t want to lie about my thoughts on this matter.
I’m sorry.
With that said, here they come.
First of all, in general terms, I just simply loved the episode. Seriously, it was great. I simply loved seeing Victor and Carla again, and I found that the whole plot point of them needing to help Elena was a logical path to take, and was executed really well. There were funny moments, Victor and Carla recognized their own wrongs, we got more fun characters to add to the EverRealm’s universe, and we got to see believable positive developments in their dynamics with Elena.
Granted, some might say that Elena went a bit too far with her aggressiveness towards them, but as much as I am a fan of Victor and Carla, I don’t fault her for being so suspicious, given everything they did to her in the past. And Elena herself admitted that she was wrong, so that’s a plus.
Also, their song? Absolutely precious.
And the squad pose in the ending scene? Looks epic.
Now... breaking things down a bit more into some specific subcategories...
THE GREAT
- The partial return to way back when
Well... as I said earlier on, I simply loved seeing Victor and Carla return. I will admit, they didn’t exactly become my favorite characters from their first appearance, but I slowly grew to care more for them as time went on. Then Snow Place Like Home came out with that wonderful display of their bond and my feels for them suddenly got a huge boost, which only grew in the following episodes with them both. They all came to a head in The Magic Within, where Victor was petrified and Carla was left completely alone for the first time in her life and, I won’t lie, I genuinely got afraid they would be leaving the series that way, Victor petrified and forgotten, and Carla left to rot in the dungeon.
I understand that they both were villains for a long time, but they just never seemed cruel enough to deserve such a fate, and even if they had been... well... some things are too bad to happen to anyone.
Fortunately, this wasn’t the case here. We got to see them return. We got to see them be together again. We got to see more of their bond, which is just beyond pure and precious, We got to see them singing a wonderful song together about better times. We got to see them actually showcasing the change in their ways. And we got to see them receive a second chance and making good use of it.
The stand-out elements would have to be Victor’s reminsicing about the past and the way he and Carla were willing to help with Ash... but really, every last bit of it was wonderful.
- Close parallels and steps to a new chance
While I went on about Victor and Carla’s development, I liked how we got to see more of this from Elena’s end. As harsh as she may have been at points (not unjustifiably so) and how it took her time to accept that Victor and Carla were being sincere in their attempt at changing, she still shows her empathy when joining into Victor and Carla’s song, and conveys how she can relate to them by longing for a time when things were simpler.
Yes, she still took time to fully give it, but given what they did to her, it’s understandable she’d be resistant to it. I do think there’s one point where she went too far, which I’ll further discuss down below, but at least she showed once more she’s willing to realize the error of her own ways. Which is one of the great things about her.
- A hero and former villains duet
I’m not kidding here. Way Back When seriously already made its way into my top favorites. Like, between the sweet music and lyrics, the sheer longing for the simpler times that Victor and Carla - and later Elena - all share, getting to see younger!Victor with child!Carla in those flashbacks... seriously, I just found it great.
- A shockingly hilarious title character.
Ixlan was priceless. That’s all I can say.
That over-the-top deadpan and stoic personality, that brutal honesty, the way she thinks with her fists... well, it just makes for a combination that I found hilarious.
That said, beyond the humor, I liked how she has actual depth to her, most notably when she can see past first impressions and comes to admit Elena is a good leader, and her dedication to protecting the place where her home used to be.
- Monstro’s Maruvian counterpart
The Moyaku was yet another great. I liked her design - while seemingly being a shout-out to Monstro, she was distinctive enough in her own right, and had a really interesting design. I liked the way it and the general adventure with her reminded me of Pinocchio and the escape he and Geppetto made from Monstro (down to the sneezing) while still being its own thing, and it certainly was a relief to see that the Moyaku seems to have much less of a temper and can admit defeat.
I also liked the way escaping her insides involved both a throwback to the cooking scene and Elena putting her trust in Victor and Carla.
- Naomi’s character development
It was a subtle thing, but I liked how Naomi, like Elena, actually proved she can change her mindset and actually learn to give people a chance.
Also, she was hilarious in that scene involving the dish Victor and Carla cooked.
That’s all.
THE TROUBLESOME
- The pseudo-corpse that stayed there
Well... to give another disclaimer here, I’m NOT one of those people who believes Elena is a heartless monster, or that she’s somehow on the path to becoming evil.
That said, I did find it problematic how she moved Victor to the dungeon, and to top it off, how she seemed to have no intention of ever depetrifying him until Quita Moz said it would take malvagos to break the spell entrapping Ixlan.
I’m not trying to deny that Victor was a villain, and I’m not trying to deny that he endangered Elena. It’s just... there are limits, and leaving Victor petrified and in the dungeon crosses two.
For one, the fact that Carla basically had to deal with seeing what might as well be her father’s corpse every day for who knew how long. Granted, it’s not actually a corpse, but still, when you think about it, it’s beyond disturbing. The only way I could accept her having done that is if Carla somehow asked for him to be there. Because otherwise, even if Elena wanted to move him out of the garden to keep the statue safer, she looks like she has a big enough palace to put him somewhere else. I mean, we even see she even had spare dungeon cells. Honestly, this is just... well, problematic. Especially because Elena said she’d deal with Carla later way back in The Magic Within... and yet, if this episode is anything to go by, she wouldn’t have done anything about this whole situation if she hadn’t needed Victor and Carla.
It just... It just doesn’t look good, I feel.
For another... well... at the risk of sounding dark... there’s the fact that, in this universe, petrification can be seen as potentially worse than death.
If this sounds like it doesn’t make sense, let me explain why I have this opinon. We know that an afterlife exists in this universe. We know that people move on there when they die. And we know that people who get petrified have no awareness of anything until they get depetrified, which was visible with Fiero in Rise of the Sorceress and Victor in this very episode. So, if Victor had stayed petrified, he would have been separated from Carla for all eternity. At least Elena will get to reunite with her parents when she dies, if not before then. If Victor hadn’t been depetrified, Carla would never have seen him again.
Again, I’m not saying Elena is a monster who was deliberately torturing Carla with that. She possibly - even likely - may not have thought this through. But still.. I just can’t help but see it as problematic.
- Isolation is not a joke
Well... this one is something may just resonate too personally a bit too much, but I will confess I didn’t like the way Elena just automatically sent Victor and Carla off to Soledad Island, and how Carla just joked about it, on two fronts.
First, after the overwhelming isolation she appears to have endured, I’m not sure it’s in-character for her to make that kind of joke.
Second, after what happened in recent months, and to a degree is still going on today, I got to experience first-hand what even much less severe social isolation can do.
I will cut this one quite a lot of slack, because the episode was made before the Coronavirus Pandemic became a thing, and this is still a show for children, but still... it feels genuinely off to see isolation played for laughs so much when I know from personal experience how even less severe one can be damaging. And it similarly feels the same way when looking back at certain characters’ previous fates, like  the Chiki-Chiki in The Last Laugh.
Hopefully later shows will learn from this. I do understand why they would want to keep a measure of ‘downplayed realistic elements’ for the sake of storytelling, but still, I hope they learn this lesson from this era.
THE DIVISIVE
- Changes in magic brand
Well... again, I will partially admit I may be biased here, especially given the path I took in my fanfic AU... but honestly, looking at actual canon, I think that Victor and Carla ceasing to be malvagos was not a good idea.
First of all, the episode just showed how useful it was to have malvagos on the good side. Without that, Ixlan would presumably have stayed imprisoned for eternity. It doesn’t make sense to throw that way, especially because now there will be no one to undo Ash’s evil spells if she uses something comparable to what trapped Ixlan.
Second... we never actually get to see a proper reason that would justify them wanting to learn good magic. Despite there being a few differences, malvago and wizard magic seem to largely overlap. And there was no in-universe reference or explanation that being a malvago by itself is somehow psychologically damaging. Victor and Carla had their personalities stay the same even though they were malvagos for around a year, so there’s no sign of it ‘bringing about issues’.
Third... well... this is just my general opinion, but I confess I’m one of those who just thinks it would be more ‘narratively interesting’ and would ‘further set them apart’ if Victor and Carla had stayed malvagos (whether they wanted to change back or not) and ended up learning to use dark magic for better purposes - which well, this very episode proved it can be done, even if only in rare circunstances. And again, for the most part, dark and light magic seems to overalp.
But this is just me.
THE CONCLUSION
A great episode. It had a few ‘iffier’ spots, but overall, it was still a great episode. If all the episodes that will still come are as good as this one, the series will have a great ending indeed.

Bluenose Fairy
Brooklyn, New York
Although it's the Roaring Twenties, not all women, and not even all feminists, are wild flappers. Madame Fay Starling is a local Brooklyn schoolteacher and social activist, proudly successful Suffragist, and frustrated Temperance proponent. Don't get excited boys; I said Temperance. As in, pro-Prohibition, and anti-alcohol, premarital sex, and overall "indecency." These prudes are referred to by the flappers and their boyfriends as "bluenoses."
The queen of the bluenose prudes resides in Brooklyn, New York--the place where all the "bad boys" and little ruffians are stereotyped to rule the streets. Throughout the burrow, rumors and warnings of "the Bluenose Fairy" circulate among speakeasies. She is said to appear seemingly out of nowhere, when you'll be too drunk to stagger away from her Victorian reprimands. Guard your giggle-water closely, for she is known to dump it out before your very eyes. And whatever you do, don't try lying to her. All of this was learned the hard way by an eccentric old antisemite of a bootlegger named Mr. Geppetto. Old Geps was drowning his sorrows after his kegs disguised as wood puppets were chopped up in the streets by the coppers. Fay's stern yet empathetic lectures were ultimately as wasted as her audience. In the end, Geppetto's only takeaway from the entire evening was spending "three months" (three hours) in "the belly of a monstrous whale" (actual a jail cell, for public drunkenness), and accidentally swallowing a cricket that he swears up and down was talking to him. His pet kitten Figaro and goldfish Cleo, who have spent the night lapping up and swimming in the spilled assets pooling under the ruined "puppets," are both too drunk to care. AN: Apologies to fans of "Pinocchio," a film I never cared for. As an adult, I also learned some interesting trivia about Mr. Geppetto's voice actor that I did Nazi coming, which has pushed the movie even further out of mein kampfort zone. However, I do appreciate its gorgeous animation, and I have come to really like the Blue Fairy's vintage 1930s design. ("Pinocchio" was technically released in 1940, but for all intended purposes, it was a film of the Depression Era.) Like Snow White, this one needed minor tweaking to take her already 1930s look one decade back.
