#new horizons AKA ENDGAME

Note
I'm feeling kinda optimistic? Like, I know it's weird, but after what you said today about how there's a chance that they could have an ambiguous scene for closure (because they didn't know for sure when they were working on the episode that they were going to be picked up by ABC), I'm obviously mad at Kristen for preffering five minute love interests as "endgames" than have them together officially and only giving them an up to interpretation scene for the sake of the internet.
However, I'm also thinking "hey, we lost the battle, but not the war". It's probable that not a lot will shift with ABC, but who knows? Kristen got what she wanted with Buck and Eddie right now, but with a new network on the horizon that's well known for actually caring about the promo of its series... I'm not giving up just yet.
Pretty much how I feel (as someone who hasn't abandoned my 'they can drag this shit out to the bitter end' stance). I don't think Buck and Natalia - with the way they were written in the first episode - is going to make it past the finale, so if Buck's *not* still single at the end...something went wrong at the last minute, aka someone panicked, lol Eddie and Marisol *could* go on a date (I didn't say definitely, guys, just that they could), but with it happening right after Eddie made the remark about dating people from a call not being the best idea...I think the plan right now is for it to not get anywhere serious - maybe the s6 finale makes the audience think Eddie's on the right track just so his arc is neatly "wrapped up" because s7 was TBD - and then, unless there's another "deep dive" into the fan base that reveals a love of Marisol, Eddie will remain unattached at the beginning of or sometime during the early portion of next season. Buddie won't be THE story in the finale - that's for the overpass collapse and Chimney whump (that brings back the Lees?) and whatever happens to Bobby because there's (obviously) always something for Bathena to go through in the big moments - but could we close out with a Buddie/Buckley-Diaz scene that leaves a mark, a scene that is meant to carry us through however long the hiatus is because this fandom's talent is making a meal out of crumbs? Yeah, I think we could. What I won't speculate on is where the show runners take it now that they know s7 is locked in. New season, new story.

morning writing drafts
I should be working on sleepless in la.
Big SHOULD there.
Instead, I think i’ve come up with a name for a 911/mass effect mashup.  And been graphic editing because who wants to finish their rom com that should have been done already?
*sigh*
Title: The First Spectre (aka previously known as untitled 911/Mass Effect space opera slowburn) chapter 1 vs prologue
Fandom: 911, Mass Effect Trilogy
Pairing: endgame Buddie (MShenko equivalent).  Assume anything else is fair game until we hit ME3 territory because i’m totally making Taylor into Miranda and Abby is going to be Liara.
Tags/warnings: i’m still not committing to writing this monster length fic(and I do mean monster length if I go for it—like 600k of the slowest of slow burns).  In the meantime i’m evidently writing a beginning, a divorce-era horizon disaster, and can clearly picture the catalyst firing/’don’t leave me behind’ scene in all its angsty goodness. Author may be in deep trouble.  First draft.  Assume Eddie=Kaidan Alenko and Buck=MShep.  Chimney is totally Joker.  Use of military terms that may confuse some audiences and be completely inappropriate as author does not have a military background and just reads too many generation kill fics.
Tagging because they asked @shortsighted-owl.  If you would like to be tagged for any updates or snippets from this one please let me know.
Tumblr media
Lieutenant Edmundo Diaz—known to his family as Eddie or everyone else as Lt Diaz or just Diaz—sat in the copilot’s chair on the bridge listening to Flight Lieutenant Han, aka Chimney, grumble about their newest mission orders.  Eddie thought that the grumbling was mostly for show—being assigned to work under Captain Robert Nash was a coveted position and good for your career.  The Normandy (known also by it’s engineering designation as SR-118) was a new type of freighter that was a joint project between the Alliance and the alien council races. There was no ship faster or with better handling anywhere in the fleet.
Chimney really should be happier he was getting the privilege of flying the equivalent of the most luxurious, high tech interplanetary transport ever made.  Instead, he was grumbling about scuttlebutt that he’d heard while getting his clearance physical from Dr. Wilson.
“Did you hear who you’ll be working with?” Chimney asked Eddie, implying that Eddie should be unhappy about his new CO.
“I heard I’d be working with Commander Buckley and there’s nothing to say.  He’s a good soldier.”
“A good soldier?!?  You heard what happened on Akuze right?  That he’s the only one who survived?”
“It means he’s capable and smart,” Eddie argued, trying to put an end to Chimney’s rant that had been going on for over a half hour.  “That’s good to have in a team CO.”
Chimney scoffed. “His entire team died except him. You going to be happy with him hanging you out to dry while he hightails it to safety?”
Eddie was beginning to think that the intel folder that had been sitting in his inbox wasn’t common knowledge as there’d just been a string of nonsensical numbers and letters as the sender’s contact information.  He’d been sent the extended—and highly classified—report on the Akuze Incident as well as the redacted official report that had been released to the press along with his official orders and a copy of Commander Buckley’s jacket. Eddie thought that Commander Buckley was lucky to have survived the first contact the Alliance had ever had with a thresher maw that had literally devoured an entire colony and then the rest of his naval special warfare unit that had been sent to investigate why the colony had gone dark.
Thresher maws were basically giant, hungry space worms with teeth the size of a small shuttle and spat acidic venom up to 3 clicks with eerie accuracy that would melt through shields and armor in less than two minutes.  If you didn’t die from the acid then you had to worry with either being eaten or crushed to death.  The damned things also hunted by noise and vibration so there was no escaping them other than getting off planet in a hurry.
Eddie might have nightmares about incidents like Akuze.  Commander Buckley had his respect for surviving one. The fact that the commander wasn’t out of his brain and stashed in some head doctor’s padded room drooling from being drugged to the gills spoke to his mental strength and resiliency.  The rest of his military jacket was even more impressive with the noted list of assignments and commendations including that he’d graduated from the Interplanetary Combatives Training (ICT) program and was one of the rare N7s.
Eddie’s only question was who had sent him the file—he was to be the XO for the ground team but it was highly unusual for him to have gotten this much intel up front…so who had given it to him?  It could be Captain Andersen since his name was also all over Commander Buckley’s file which suggested a mentor-mentee relationship but it could also have been the Commander himself or a third party who wanted to somehow prejudice Eddie in some way.
He was inclined to give his new CO the benefit of the doubt and see how things went.  Paperwork often omitted some truths and as a biotic Eddie had experienced his fair share of off-the-books blowbacks and prejudices.
Chimney, however, wasn’t.  The man was an inveterate gossip and had his ear tuned to get all the latest scuttlebutt.  Eddie had only known him for a few weeks but he knew if he needed to know anything about anybody on the ship then Chimney was the person to see.

Chapters: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - Not Finished
Chapter 6 Excerpt:
"Would you look at this, all this fuss over me … it's maddening. I hate it," groaned Robin. Nancy rested against the table, her hand grazing against the Bard's. "What if this all goes to hell, like whatever you see inside here is just blank, or worse, what if they aren't okay." Robin prodded at her head with her finger.
Nancy nudged their shoulders together. "Afraid I'll see a private confession?"
"Possibly In front of Will Byers," Robin laughed. "Not likely."
A quiet passed between the two, their surroundings far too public.
"It's got to be you. I have dingus to look over me, and Argyle would do anything for the Byers. Even the new one has Hopper as much as he doesn't seem to want the job. Barb has no one to look after her. Make sure she's okay. Gods, I hope she's okay." Nancy stayed silent, letting her friend ramble away her thoughts. The Elf took hold of the Bard's hand she squeezed hard. "If you do see some sort of love confession or deep secret in there … make sure those two don't go blabbing it to anyone." Nancy laughed. "I’d like to keep a few times in Vogler to myself." Robin eyed the brunette. Nancy knew exactly the point in time she was thinking.
---
The stars are cruel to our Elf Fighter(Nancy) and Human Bard(Robin). Always passing, never aligning.
Will Nancy and Robin realize they have always wanted more, or as always, turn from possibilities, afraid of losing the strong bond they already had?
Their burn is slow, but it is strong. Ronance is endgame.
-or- A retelling of core events and much more, In a High Fantasy setting of Dragonlance aka ST with Dragons. Nancy, Robin, and friends prepare for adventure on the horizon.

Magical Initiative: Walpurgisnacht trailer
A trailer for the fourth (but not the last) Magical Initiative movie, inspired by the 1st Endgame trailer.
(Open on a computer screen displaying a video ready to play, while somber music can be heard in the background. The cursor hits the play icon, and the video starts, the footage displaying Oriko Mikuni in her Puella Magi garb.)
Oriko: Is this thing on?
(She pauses.)
Oriko: Hello there. My name is Oriko Mikuni. If you’re hearing this, it means I am now dead.
(Shot of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask greeting the Starlights and Sailor Kinmoku [Princess Kakyuu]. Luna and Artemis stand in human form nearby.)
Oriko (v/o): But I have foreseen much of what is to come after I am gone.
(Shot of Aguri Madoka comforting Yuma Chitose. They are joined by Kyoko, who is carrying a bag of steaming hot buns. Shots of the Sailor Senshi, Symphogear squad, Smile Cures, and Mew Mews interacting with the purified Gertrud, HN Elly, Elsa Maria, and Patricia, respectively.)
Oriko (v/o): Thus, I have made these recordings so you will be prepared.
(Shot of Westar, Soular, Marmo, Ira, and the Dokkashi approaching Alyssa Searrs and Miyu Greer in a park. As the former servants of Moebius and Deep Blue engage Miyu in conversation, Marmo and Ira crouch down to where Alyssa is sitting, Marmo holding out a small blob of purple and yellow energy that continuously changes form.)
Oriko (v/o): You deserve to know the whole truth about the Incubators.
(Shot of multiple silver-black wormlike creatures looking up at an enormous three-headed, gem-encrusted monster resembling a chimeric hybrid of snake, beetle, and moth—the Incubator queen. Cut back to the video.)
Oriko: And more importantly, how to end the suffering they cause—permanently.
(The video pauses as the camera zooms out, revealing several silhouetted figures watching. Cut to a crowd of people standing on a riverbank, placing small paper boats carrying candles into the water. At the same time, the background music changes, becoming more ‘an epic battle is about to begin’ in tone.)
Hibiki (v/o): We drove the Incubators away, but at a great cost.
(Shots of various girls holding swiftly blackening Soul Gems. Some are trying to clean them with Grief Seeds, but the taint keeps building no matter how many seeds they use.)
Fate (v/o): Every Puella Magi we didn’t save...is now an Eldritch witch.
(Shots of different Puella Magi collapsing lifelessly, their Soul Gems turning to Grief Seeds as new Eldritch witches emerge in droves.)
Yuna (v/o): So much was lost because of their lies.
(Shot of Vita and Signum sparring with Kyoya and Miyuki Takamachi. Despite being new to Mid-Childan magic, Nanoha’s siblings are proving surprisingly adept.)
Mami (v/o): But at the same time, for all they stole away...
(Cut to Mami, Kyoko, and Nagisa, all possessing traits of their witch forms, speaking to a group of other purified Eldritch witches. Among them is Carola, AKA Kazumi Subaru, who is passing out tea and strawberry tarts to the others.)
Homura (v/o): ...they may have given us the key to destroying them.
(Shot of the Go Princess Cures face to face with Mai Tokiha, Mikoto Minagi, and Natsuki Kuga. After a moment, Cure Flora and Mai take each other’s hands, all present wearing looks of grim determination.)
Cure White (v/o): This war isn’t over yet.
(Shot of the Regalia trio, the girls from Asunaro and Hoozuki, and the Fresh Cures in their civilian forms watching what looks like a mass of storm clouds on the horizon. As the camera zooms in on it, however, the form of a certain super-Eldritch becomes somewhat visible.)
Cure Black (v/o): We will avenge the fallen.
(Cut to the Prism—old and new members alike—gathered outside the Lunarium. Sailor Moon stands before the assembled magical girls and allies, looking determined.)
Sailor Moon: It’s time to take the Incubators down, once and for all.
(Cut to title card.)
Magical💖Initiative: Walpurgisnacht
Alicia (v/o): Hello, is anyone there?
(Cut to a camera monitor displaying a girl almost identical in appearance to Fate, but with bright red hair.)
Alicia: My name is Alicia. You might know a girl named Fate, who looks like me.
Nanoha (v/o): Is this a recording of some kind?
Alicia: Listen, I’m here with some other girls.
(The camera zooms out slightly to reveal Serena Cadenzavna Eve, the Splash Star Cures, and the Yes 5 Cures, all in civilian garb.)
Alicia: They say they might be able to help.
Fate (v/o): No...it’s the front door!
Alicia: So is there any chance you could buzz us in?

a new threat is on the horizon — or so you’ve been told. the initiative is kept in vague terms, secretive about what their goals are and who is involved; an anonymous phone call and unfamiliar voices on the other end are all you have to go off of. the one thing they do tell you? the universe is on the brink of collapse if nothing is done to stop it.
SO WHAT'S NEXT?
UNIVERSEHQS is a marvel rp group set post endgame on earth-199999 ( aka the universe that the mcu is set in ) where characters from all different marvel universes are recruited and gathered together by an unknown organization to face an unknown threat.
who has brought them here and why will be revealed through events and plot drops, but for now everyone is in the dark.

book review: Carolyn Slaughter, Relations (1976)
Genre: Gothic psychological suspense
Is it the main pairing: yes
Is it canon: yes
Is it explicit: yes
Is it endgame: no
Is it shippable: yes
Bottom line: I read this concurrently with Wuthering Heights and allow me to play sommelier—10/10 recommend this wine pairing for maximum gothic extraness. tw: suicide
There’s boatloads of sex but this is not a horny story. It’s a lyrical story—in the sense of expressing direct, spontaneous feeling. Not that a story couldn’t be both (Wuthering Heights is both horny and lyrical) but I actually want to spend a minute defending this book to my past self. The first time I read it, I was unimpressed because Relations wasn’t much of a Love Story. You know the kind I’m talking about, you know the beats you’d expect it to hit: here is a pair of siblings tOrMeNtEd by their iLLiCiT pAsSiOn!!! I mean, the mode isn’t always tragic or dark but even the cream-puff versions of this arc entail some sort of line being crossed or feelings being caught. We are used to characters who begin in initial-state, a journey brings them to end-state and a clear delta separates the two conditions. This book says: fuck that. Fuck change. Fuck growth. My best days are behind me and I’m ok with that because now my brother is lost to me and I give zero fucks about anything else. We have a novel steeped in the symbolism of winter (the season of loss & deadness that is impermeable to change). Our pregnant heroine dreads her impending due date, in part because the child is not her beloved brother’s; but mostly because having a baby is just about the biggest change a body can be subjected to, and she’s actively averse to change. All she wants is her brother back. If you’re looking for characters to fall in love, as in transition from feeling one way to feeling another way, this is most likely not the book for you. But I enjoyed it a whole helluva lot and let me tell you why.
The predominant note of this story is MELANCHOLY. It’s backwards-looking rather than forward-looking, things just keep getting worse and worse for our protagonist and yet she’s unapologetic about what she did: she loved her brother, loves him still and always will. What I admire is that she is steadfast in the face of remorseless despair. Compare these quotes, this one from near the beginning: “I feel listless, often close to tears. I am beset by fiendish pangs.” This is from near the end: “I am hollow, clanging with emptiness; there is no solution.” Do you see what I mean by no delta between initial-state and end-state? I think there is an important distinction between this book and Forbidden, which holds out the promise of a happy ending only to snatch it away at the last minute, in that Relations puts its cards on the table & promises no such thing. It’s melancholy all the way down (well, three-quarters of the way down it transpires this book is in fact a high-concept Folgercest prequel I SHIT YOU NOT friends read it yourself).
In the novel’s present, our girl Catherine is entombed in a emotionally sterile marriage; in the past she grows up warmed by the sun of her brother Christopher’s regard & affection. Slaughter chooses to locate these strands at two crucial points in Cathy’s development—age ten (prepubescent) and age thirty (the age at which women’s “biological clocks” start ticking—this is relevant because Slaughter is writing in the 1970s even if Cathy is living in the late Victorian Era). We should note here that Christopher is older than Catherine by two years, aka the universally acknowledged INCEST SWEET SPOT (I know some of you favor twincest but you are WRONG and I will prove it in my forthcoming monograph on the topic). At age ten, Cathy and Christopher have intercourse for the first time after stumbling on their father’s secret porn stash. The sex is more mechanical than enjoyable, and that’s the point: they start banging out of curiosity, keep banging out of habit, and only later do hormones and feelings kick in. Ten- and twelve-year-olds just don’t get horny the way older kids do, and that is, again, the entire point. Slaughter structures it so the sex happens first (in the very first flashback chapter). The feelings don’t follow, the feelings don’t emerge, the feelings were there all along. What the sex does is seal a secret between the two of them, the secret of their father’s porn stash (hidden in an abandoned wing of the house).
If we turn back to the present, we find Catherine yoked to a man who excites zero feelings in her. By her own admission she married him because “I found him pleasant to listen to and he never made any demands upon me.”These are the qualities that recommend a husband to her—that he impose no psychic demands whatsoever! All her energies are already absorbed in reminiscence lol. We find out he proposed to her with a speech worthy of Pride & Prejudice’s Mr. Collins, and that he possesses not a particle of passion. Which is exactly how Cathy wanted it:
I entered the marriage in a state of apathy; simply undergoing it because of Mamma’s pressure, and because there seemed no other real alternative apart from marriage open to me.
We were married in the winter of my thirtieth year.
I walked down the aisle in a state of complete inertia, my sense muffled by the laudanum … I wished with all my heart he could have been my brother.
File away that glancing reference to winter; more on that later. For now please focus on how numb she is—not discontent, just apathetic. Cathy insists the present brings her nothing but pain and insists she doesn’t regret the choices that brought her here. She’s unrepentant about loving Chris, and explicitly rejects the conventional moral framing that would view her past self as “sinning” and her present self as “redeemed”:
I could not rid myself of the old and over-riding passion of my childhood. I decided eventually that no one would ever, could ever, be what my brother had been to me.
If I could have felt then, and now, that there was some evil in what we did, then I could have borne it. But I could find no evil in it.
I would not be so oppressed if I could but feel my past was wicked and scandalous. If I believed that, i could gladly submit to the institution or the grave. But some buoyant spirit within me keeps insisting that what I had was fine, and contained elements of true beauty.
“The institution or the grave,” she says. Those are the choices. If you want to have Thoughts and Feelings and not just a Body, then your lot as a woman is to end up either in a sanitarium or dead in childbed. Only when she looks back at her childhood does Cathy perceive a time when it was different, when Christopher, at least, saw her as a whole-ass person. Yes, this is another entry in dr. thecloserkin’s ongoing “Incest vs. the Patriarchy” series; if you guys thought I was going to stay off my bullshit for more than ten minutes then joke’s on you hahaha. Here are some quotes that show she was getting her emotional needs met as a child (she’s borderline suicidal as an adult):
leaves me with only the memory of such complete intimacy. It is beyond my reach now, and perhaps I shall never agin recapture it though I live to be ninety.
there was no discord in our interests and desires.
We talked all the time. We never ran out of conversation; I never grew tired of his speech.
It never occurred to me…that we would not always be together. There seemed no need for anyone else—he filled out my present and my past.
Ok so if everything was so idyllic back then what the heck happened? How did it all fall apart? Slaughter withholds the crucial revelatory scene until close to the end, but the story up till then is permeated by a very Gothic sense of creeping dread. The elephant on the horizon is change. Cathy and Chris are on the precipice of puberty, which portends seismic changes in their bodies, and the accompanying changes in their roles as they inch toward adulthood. Cathy doesn’t handle it well:
the old fear. A fear of things changing; of his face looking at me in an unfamiliar way; of our world altering and growing cold about me.
There seemed no question why it should not always continue in this way, and no reason why our bodies or our minds should change or suddenly not fit.
Our life became a little cloister: and I never wanted to leave it. The idea of change haunted me.
I was insisting, always, like a child, the nothing must change; nothing must happen to destroy our life together.
And here is where I connect her fear of change with her favorite season, winter:
I was afraid of change. It seemed menacing. I realized the sadness and bleakness of the winter really suited my nature best. It made me feel more real; sadness now seemed more real than happiness; more permanent, and therefore easier to bear.
the seasons change and find me the same. Nothing touches me, nothing makes me laugh or weep. I have no real substance.
OMG SHE’S A FUCKING REVENANT
”You are so thin. Your limbs are slim as these winter branches.”
I have touched my roots, my beginnings, the things that have formed me.
This book is an anti-change pro-winter manifesto. Winter is the season of desolation, where nothing grows, and if there is one change she adjures above all others it’s the life presently taking root within her womb:
If I am a seed about to burst, if I am to flower, the old seed, my Self, must die. Some new thing will grow out of me; but I must perish. I cannot have it; I cannot allow it to happen. I must protect myself from this that would devour me.
My body continued to change according to its own will, nothing could shift the determined embryo within me … I cannot bear the thought of this thing growing within me, living off my blood … I feel nothing but doom, and a great fear if this shall finally come to pass.
The progress of her pregnancy is literally making her mentally ill. I want to link this horror imagery to child!Cathy’s musings on the decomposition of her father’s corpse:
I wondered if all the flesh had fallen off by this time. I imagined his bones growing into the wood of the coffin, and the trees growing into his skull, the roots twisting around his rotting limbs.
People who read this passage and think “this is a really tight horror aesthetic but what is it doing in the middle of my luscious love story” are missing the point. This is a horror story. But instead of framing the incest as the impure act that violates and threatens our accepted categories, we are invited to view the pregnancy as a gross & unnatural hijacking of Cathy’s body. Her body’s fecundity defeats and puzzles her. She actually tells us about her nightmare wedding before she tells us about her real wedding; in her nightmare she looks at her bridegroom and:
transfixed with horror because he is without the male member — all that resides in the space between his thighs is a burnt-out stub—like the hacked branch of a tree deadened and blacked by many winters.
So far we’ve had body horror associated with (1) her father (2) her husband (3) her unborn baby. Notice who’s not on this list? Notice who she always thinks of with tenderness? Notice who doesn’t ever evoke an iota of fear or horror in Cathy? That’s right! Her brother. The whole incestuous affair is really an own-goal on patriarchy’s part, because the same doctor who warns Cathy’s mother against Cathy’s “wild and unnatural attachment to her brother” goes on to say:
Little girls, Madam, are the scourge of the earth. They have no future, but to grow into that unhealthy state of womanhood, with its unclean festerings and grotesque swellings of the abdomen. I would that little girls could always stay the pure young things they are before the age of eight.
This is some next-level IT WAS EVE’S FAULT SHE ATE THE APPLE spin. Can you blame Cathy for taking this venerable authority figure at his word, and staying “pure” by staying a child, by warding off womanhood and childbearing altogether? goodforher.jpg
Real quick here are some lighthearted episodes from their childhood since it’s not all doom and gloom: Christopher marches next door to confront the Frenchman who is maybe sleeping with their mom and is definitely perving on Cathy. Christopher returns the Frenchman’s gift of silk stockings with a grand declaration of “My sister Catherine has no need for these.” That’s right shut him down Chris!!! Also: Cathy falls into a frozen pond and Christopher rescues her. Their negligent mother blames Christopher. Cathy is shaking with pneumonia and all she wants to do is “make the sad look leave my brother’s sweet face.” Christopher refuses to leave her side until she rallies from the fever. He is thirteen:
I think that Christopher and I half-died together in that terrible week, and afterward, when the terror had passed, we were never quite the children we had been before.
Congrats kids you have undertaken a symbolic journey to the underworld!!!! Good job.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
It wouldn’t be a real incest story without a third sibling, an odd-man-out who helps us triangulate our main pairing’s relationship. Edward is a sociopath and a bully. Parents playing favorites always wreaks havoc with children’s sense of self-worth, but I think in this case it’s 90% down to Edward just being a bad egg (fwiw their father, when he was alive, did favor Christopher). Edward is a peripheral figure for most of their childhood; he appears only to “bang on our door to tell us to be silent for our giggling kept him awake.” That’s right, our door—teenage Catherine and Christopher share not just a room but a bed (!). Edward resurfaces as an adult to beg for Catherine’s intercession with his wife. He married an heiress, and now he seems to have soured on her. He talks about her “malady” and her “hysterical nonsense.” She has “phantom confinements.” They are “phantom” because she is barren. Sir you are literally a Victorian dude named Edward who keeps his mad wife locked up in the attic, you can sit allllll the way down. A heavily pregnant Catherine rolls up to Edward’s house just in time to witness his wife’s suicide: ”I had to make sure there was nothing inside me,” explains the poor woman, lying in a pool of blood after cutting her abdomen open with a knife. This seems fine. This whole society seems fine, right? Catherine reflects: “Ill-health or madness was her only solution, married as she was to a man who so complacently felt himself her superior” and “We are sepulchered alive in this close world, and want more room.” If this applies to her sister-in-law’s tragic fate it applies with equal force to her own situation. Cathy may not be physically barren but her inner life is empty af.
I’m going to talk about the breakup now. The climax of this book is the last time Cathy and Chris have sex. Contrast the arc of many slow-burn stories where the climax is the first time the main pairing has sex. Cathy’s menses doesn’t even arrive until after the incestuous affair is over! And what precipitates the breakup? Well, their mother decides to take the family on a seaside vacation. This is the summer when everything changes (Cathy’s favorite season is winter, and she abhors change). As for what changes, exactly, it’s kind of unclear? Wasn’t like they got caught having beach sex (which they had a ton of). The forces of change are wholly internal. They’re growing up. They’re waking up to the existence of social taboos that will brand their love “unnatural” & worse. As readers we can see that Catherine and Christopher’s attachment is as natural as breathing, and it’s actually the Incest Is Icky crowd that’s drawing harmful artificial boundaries. What happens is there’s a local girl who has obvious designs on Chris. She’s a nonentity but the mere existence of someone outside of Catherine and Christopher, someone who views one of them as an object of sexual desire, sort of punctures the bubble they’ve hitherto been living in. They can’t pretend society doesn’t exist or that what they’re doing isn’t immoral by its lights:
”We have never felt bad before. It just happened and there was no harm in it. I see no harm in it now—I cannot feel suddenly that it is wrong … but even if it is, why does it signify? Nobody knows.” ”Yes, but why does nobody know? It must be because we have deliberately tried to hide it?”
Christopher is the one who unilaterally decides that incest is wrongdirtybad and it has to end. Christopher is the one who seeks out Rando Local Girl and fucks her just to prove how serious he is about ending it with Cathy, which imo was inflicting a pointlessly cruel injury for no reason?? Wtf Chris I thought you were one of the good ones. What I love about Cathy is the steadfastness of her conviction—she accepts Christopher’s decision but she is far from convinced by his reasoning, his deference to social norms. Here’s Cathy’s take: “it seems to me that to live in a way that is contrary to one’s own nature, to live in a way that is false, that is the evil. The discontent grows like a cancer.” Authenticity ought to count for something, no? But these kids and their beautiful love are ultimately outmatched by, and broken by, the weight of social mores:
I could not bear to think of anything changing. I wanted it to stay the same dear way it had always been; ever since I could remember … but the spell was broken; we could not pretend any more. We had to stop being children. “Please. Once more.”
And that’s the breakup scene. It’s devastating. Cathy keeps staring at this one beauty mark on Christopher’s familiar well-loved face and she’s crying and I’m crying too. Recall that they’re still sharing a room/a bed up to this point? “The first night alone was the worst,” says Cathy. Imagine losing the person who is your whole world….overnight. Oof. There’s a time-jump of a few years, and Chris announces he’s off to—I think South Africa? I think this is around the time of the Boer War? I didn’t make any detailed notes and I’ll be damned if I’m going to fish for my copy of the book just to confirm what we already know, that it’s the 1800’s and the sun never set on the British Empire:
”I must get away from here and see something different; begin again…I cannot imagine a day without your face, or your sweet companionship. I do love you. But this must be for the best.”
Christopher goes off to doing colonial-settler stuff, initially. Here’s his first letter home:
I want you to be happy and grow up straight without me.
As opposed to growing up crooked, or growing up gay?? Here are subsequent letters where he seems to have done a complete 180:
thought it would be simpler to be away from you, from the constant temptation. It is not. My nightmares terrify me, they are eating my brain. I don’t know how long this can last.
AND THEN he writes he’ll be coming home for Christmas! I must’ve missed the memo where this story turns into a straight-up Folgers fic but that’s about where we are. It’s literally Folgercest. He goes to Africa explicitly to get away from her. Time and distance cannot suppress their feelings. He comes home to find her still waiting for him:
”Why have you clung to me, or rather the memory of me. For surely the memory is better than this twisted, pathetic creature before you?” “I have found no one better,” I said simply.
Asdfdfkdfjd this reunion scene is heartbreaking bc Christopher and Catherine are barely five minutes in each other’s company before Edward intrudes, claims to have found them in a compromising position, claims to have suspected all along about the incest, almost comes to blows with Christopher, tells him to get out. And Chris does. Cathy doesn’t even get to say goodbye. Edward’s presence is so clearly a case of entrapment—he was expecting Chris to come to her, he was expecting to catch them doing something “inappropriate” even though it sounds like they were only embracing—that there is no doubt in my mind Edward’s intent was to hurt Cathy and Chris, rather than to protect Cathy’s reputation or whatever bullshit he was spouting. We have seen from Edward’s abuse of his wife that he is no kind of moral authority. He does, however, succeed in “making me feel unclean, and dirt was attaching itself to me with every foul word he said.” In this scene Edward is handy synecdoche for patriarchy, which berates Cathy with accusations of sinfulness while actively stifling her every creative impulse and intellectual endeavor. If this book has a villain (and I don’t think it does; it’s not that kind of book) Edward is it. I find that edifying. It’s not Cathy’s husband who’s the primary antagonist standing in the way of her self-actualization—the husband is no more than an empty suit—it’s her other brother. One brother saves her and the other damns her.
After Edward runs Chris off and Chris goes back to Africa there are a few more letters, including this one: “that nothing has changed in my heart. That I love you with the passion of our youth, with the strength of all these long, long years.” Thank you for the affirmation Chris! I needed it even if Cathy didn’t. But the war is ramping up and Chris is headed into a combat zone and the odds of his survival do not look good. Cathy is already preparing to grieve him. She’s also preparing to go into labor any day now. These two threads, her brother’s impending death and her child’s impending birth, merge in the final pages of the book where Cathy is just clearly SO OVER IT:
I have nothing to fight, yet the waiting is most terrible … I have nothing to do but wait. I have nothing to leave.
It is hard to go on. How can I escape this life, this round of boredom and other births? O, that I could be ten and happy!
That’s the end but come on. Raise your hand if you don’t think this girl will 100% yeet herself into the sea and they’ll rule it “postpartum depression”? Anybody? No?

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share? ~ Bleu
Oooo yes!! Lol so many
Letters from the Void Redux (stony): Endgame AU wherein Tony and Steve learn to forgive and fall in love through the art of writing letters. One scene in particular is inspired by this art.
Excerpt: Steve slips away as Tony’s taken to the medical ward, his skeletal frame scarily still. He shuts the bathroom door behind him with a resounding slam, locks it for good measure as he feels himself unraveling.
Liar
No trust
He bites back bile and whirls, slams his fist into tiling and yes that’s it, pain, pain is what he needs, deserves, so he does it again and again and again till there’s a hole a foot wide and ten inches deep in the steel and concrete and his hand is slick with blood.
The Muse (starker): Tony is a classical music composer who has lost his muse. He stumbles into a run down piano bar with no pianist and no customers and a bartender with a smile like the sun who reignites his creative fire.
Excerpt: Music is that powerful and all consuming feeling of awe and utter smallness when standing at the ocean's edge—He stands on the beach, pants soaking with each slap of the tide against his legs, the water freezing and he’s sure that if he looked his skin would be blue but it doesn’t matter, doesn’t feel like anything as he screams into the vastness of the horizon, time and tide carrying it away until there’s nothing left but the hoarseness at the back of his throat and the steady flow of the ocean—in and out, in and out.
Code Name: Love (stony): Steve Rogers aka Captain America is elected president and falls in love with his secret service agent, Tony Stark.
Excerpt: “Thank you Tony,” the President murmurs, gaze flickering over his face, lingering on his lips. “I...I think you should call me Steve when we’re alone,” he suggests softly, lips curling into a warm smile.
Tony feels heat crawl up his neck and nods nervously, “Sure Mr. President, uh, I mean, Steve,” he stutters out.
Steve grins and squeezes his shoulder, “Great! I think it’s time for bed then, don’t you?”
Heaven is Your Touch (spidershield collab with @infinity-worried ): Steve Rogers is a good man, a man of unwavering beliefs, which is why he’s a teacher at a prestigious Catholic school in New York. All that changes when Peter Parker transfers to the school and he can’t quite seem to keep his eyes off the young man. (No excerpt for this one yet!)
Unbroken (stony): Steve Rogers is rescued from the ice when Tony is just a kid, struggling under the weight of Howard’s expectations for him—Present as an Alpha or be disowned. Steve quickly becomes Tony’s only friend, his protector, but when Tony does present—he’s left with few options. Faced with being forced into a bond with Obadiah, Tony begs Steve to bond him instead.
Excerpt:
His father gives him his first taste of alcohol at nine, slapping him when he spits it back into the glass in revulsion.
“Starks are made of iron,” he declares and pushes the glass that’s half full toward Tony, “now drink.”
He makes Tony drink till his head swims and his stomach roils and then when he vomits on the floor of his father’s office, he gets his nose pushed in it like a puppy that’s pissed on the floor.
He cries as his father uses the belt, teeth biting hard into his forearm to stifle his cries. He gets better at it as he gets older, but the scars on his arm are proof of his suffering.
Proof that he’s like his father; strong and iron willed and alpha.

Disney+ The Winter Soldier And Falcon (Cap) Series Prediction
Directed by Chris Evans
So while this is a ways off I just like to spread rumors and speculations but supposedly Chris Evans has the opportunity to be considered to direct some if not all of the Winter Soldier Series.
What is being referred to as the “Batfleck contract” it is a situation where actor/director will star within the given role only if they are allowed to direct it ie formerly Ben Affleck when joining DC to be Batman. Chris Evans has made clear that his primary reason for stepping away from his role as Captain America is because he wants to become a director as in his directorial debut of Before We Go that he actually starred in alongside Typhoid Mary herself Alice Eve. Director Joe Russo made comical Chris’s apparently farewell tweet on Twitter by stating “He’s not done and fans will understand why soon enough” and perhaps this is what he meant stepping away from the screen and moving behind the camera. But the contract would flow as if Chris were to still be willing to move to a background role as Cap showing up in small cameos or like Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming at best then in exchange they will let him direct something as well as producing some of his own projects via any of Disney’s many outlets including indie film production company Miramax or newly acquired Fox.
That’s where this series comes in. It would be fitting that Steve Rogers not only step away from the frontlines of Cap but also literally pass on the mantle down. Between Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson as successors I say WHY NOT BOTH. He gives Bucky his new Shield but for Sam he gives him his Super Soldier Serum! and I’ll let the writers figure that one out.
Plot: In recovering from the events of Avengers: Endgame the world could “use a little old fashion” and the old Stars and Stripes are the right place to look for hope. With no more space invasions on the horizon but with Cap gone as well it’s up to his best friends to do their best and fill in the gap and keep would be super villains down. Their first mission is to recover the lost Shield left behind from Civil War (what a coincidence?! 2 Shields and 2 successors???) but when revisiting the past the past may not be so nice as they remember.
I would say to make it about Cap’s legacy and to go big this would be a great opportunity to introduce the first live action iteration of the Masters of Evil and reintroduce the talented Daniel Brühl but as full comic book Baron Zemo. I would say to use characters who could later show up as the Thunderbolts like Abner Jenkins aka Beetle and Paul Norbert Ebersol aka Fixer. And make it a reversal of the Avengers Under Seige storyline but with Bucky and Sam having to storm the villains’ base to recover the Shield that say they showcase as a trophy. In legacy terms Zemo could have gotten a hold of the Super Soldier Serum himself in his escape from captivity. Not to take away from an independent Bucky and Sam storyline but they are initially Cap side characters and due to their characters arcs this is a great bookend to the Cap side of their lives at least for the first Season. The Winter Soldier will get a redemption and transition role in earning the mantle of Cap while Falcon gets to soar above being considered a sidekick and can be the super powered heroic symbol the world needs. It’s more than just a buddy cop show or a Cap spinoff. This is important going forward and with the Disney Plus shows being literally connected to the greater MCU films unlike Agents of Shield or the former Netflix series this is a great way to establish these characters’ next chapters because James Buchanan Barnes needs some closure and Anthony Mackie can finally get some powers besides being the absolute best!

blog 04 - avatar (the one with the blue people not the last airbender)
Tumblr media
preface
I went into this with absolutely no feelings about this movie beyond the absurdity of how many sequels it’s apparently going to get. As an artist, I find the visual effects extremely impressive even to this day, but as a storyteller, I thought this story was almost so inoffensive that it’s offensive.
However, I think that engaging with things in good faith is a good way to find ways to expand your horizons and thoughts, and I like to enjoy things despite my dad’s insistence that I like to not enjoy things. (It’s not that I like to not like things, it’s that it’s easier to entertain people when it’s a bad review. Tough crowd.) I’m a firm believer in the idea that cerebral analysis of media adds to the joy of consumption rather than takes away from it, so let’s dive right in.
I like structure, so we’re gonna layer it like a delicious theme cake.
1. the elephant in the room
Everyone has seen Pocohontas. Everyone has seen Dancing With Wolves. I’m not really here to rehash arguments, but I think getting into this movie without addressing what first comes to everyone’s mind when they think about it is pretty much impossible. The “White Savior” trope is more or less a narrative cliche in which a noble white person will take a stand against the Bad White People on the side of a sympathetic oppressed people-- Native Americans see this plotline probably the most, but black people still see it today every now and then (Green Book got nominated for a lot of Oscars, after all. The hunger is there for easily digestible feel-good race relation drama.) Wikipedia sums up the White Savior trope better than I could, so here it is:
“At the cinema, the white savior narrative occupies a psychological niche for most white people, as an expression of their latent desire for interracial goodwill and reconciliation. By presenting stories of racial redemption, involving black people and white people professing to reach across racial barriers, Hollywood is catering to a mostly white audience who believe themselves unfairly victimized by non-white ethnic groups, because they are culturally exhausted with the unfinished national discourse about race and ethnicity in the society of the United States. Hence, films featuring the narrative trope of the white savior have notably similar storylines, which present an ostensibly nobler approach to race relations, but offer psychological refuge and escapism for white Americans seeking to avoid substantive conversations about race, racism, and racial identity. In this way, the narrative trope of the white savior is an important cultural artifact, a device to realize the desire to repair the social and cultural damage wrought by the myths of white supremacy and paternalism, regardless of the inherently racist overtones of the white-savior narrative trope.“
Native Americans factor into this most significantly in the case of Avatar-- aliens in movies are hardly ever just aliens. Whether they represent an oppressed underclass (District 9), childhood innocence (E.T.), or fear of foreign invasion (War of the Worlds), aliens are an easy vessel to carry almost any idea you want them to. So if the Na’vi are more or less an ideological stand-in for Native Americans during the conquest of America, our protagonist Jake is the future space cowboy to the Cowboys and Indians In Space.
Both Jake and Grace sort of fall in and out of the White Savior space-- ultimately Grace condescends to the Na’vi a little more and she has a more complete character arc that ends with her transcending this trope, but Jake is whole hog in it. He’s like, the legendary prophecy warrior. He’s The Guy.
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: The Guy)
James Cameron grapples pretty hard with the White Savior trope-- he never truly goes one way or another about it and the concept of Avatars-- as in the Na’vi bodies that Jake and company jump into-- significantly...well, complicates the idea of race relations in this movie. There are certainly some uncomfortable ideas about identity wrapped up in the concept of body swaps (if this idea interests you, Altered Carbon is a really good read), but re: the readings and lectures, the concept kind of works towards what is ultimately the broad takeaway of the movie.
In summary: no, we’re not doing this whole review about White Guilt in Space. Now that that’s out of the way...
2. james cameron predicted late stage capitalism
Imperialism
"The policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies."
Avatar is about imperialism. This is as broad and pointed a theme as you can get from a movie that draws such heavy inspiration from Native American and Aboriginal cultures. Interestingly enough, the movie’s futuristic setting goes hand in hand with the commentary about the military and Western Imperialism.
The company in Avatar, and all the almost comedically evil military men, are very brazen about their lack of ideological purpose. They are on Pandora for money. They are being paid to go to Pandora to take its resources-- the delightfully named “Unobtanium” in specific. As mentioned in the reading, Unobtanium is valuable for its properties as a superconductor, and I’m not a STEM kid, so I’ll leave it at that for simplicity’s sake.
That the mercenary force on Pandora is so open about their exploitative intentions draws an interesting parallel to the world of today that’s maybe a touch haunting, considering that Avatar came out some years ago. In politics, at least up until now, you notice the use of a few common euphemisms as smokescreens for more extreme ideas-- for example, the Right’s: “protecting American jobs”.
Protecting American jobs is a euphemism for racism against Mexicans-- it was the most common smokescreen reasoning for the border wall pre-Trumpian politics. Trump and company have since dropped the euphemism all together. The death of a euphemism usually means that the euphemism is no longer culturally or socially required-- you can just come out and say whatever horrible thing you mean. In Avatar’s universe, it’s clear that the political-economic climate has come to a point where they can just say that they’re there to steal the Na’vi’s resources whether they like it or not.
The movie and the lecture both draw specific attention to the parallels the film draws explicitly between military tactics used in the movie, and real-world events. “Shock and Awe”, a tactic coined by the Bush era, is referenced in exact terms-- it being a display of overwhelming force intended to break the fighting spirit of the enemy. The commander character whose name I just read but I can’t remember now says that he is a veteran of both Venezuela and Nigeria-- both real world locations in which the U.S. has invaded and destabilized for material interests under the guise of American ideology.
In Avatar, we see the thin veneer of “freedom and democracy” as the driving forces of U.S. intervention stripped away explicitly. The opening narration of Jake’s arrival to Pandora has him say that “on Earth, these men were soldiers fighting for freedom...but here, they’re mercenaries”, however, the line between a supposed freedom fighter and a mercenary is borderline nonexistent.
Tumblr media
3. western scientific objectivism sucks
Another current running through Avatar is the juxtaposition of what is “real” with what is “unreal-- aka Western objectivity science versus belief systems. This is embodied in the character of Grace, a scientist and anthropologist who has been researching Na’vi culture for some time. The reading characterizes her as “the happy face of liberalism” that tries to put a nice coat of paint over the same imperialist ideas that the more blunt military types embody-- she is kinder to the Na’vi and sees their culture and planet as worth preserving, but she is ultimately dismissive of their beliefs and of Eywa (”pagan voodoo”) the same as the other mercenaries.
We’re gonna put on tinfoil hats for a little bit here to make a relation between Western culture (imperialism and colonialism) and capitalism and paganism. Are you ready?
Okay.
Tumblr media
So you know how they burned witches at the stake at the onset of the Industrial Age in America and the pagan practices of “hedge magic” were pretty much obliterated? I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Capitalism is a system that can only operate materialistically-- people aren’t “people” but “workers”, and the concept of magic and belief exists in terms that capitalism can’t define, and more importantly, can’t exploit. So witches were burned and women were placed with great reinforcement back into domesticity, where their function in capitalism was to give birth to and rear new workers.
You can see this dichotomy between the science of objectivity (what is “real”) and belief systems (what is “unprovable”, “unobservable”) in the way Grace uses scientific terms to justify the Na’vi’s spirituality. A very powerful through-line can be seen in the way that imperialism, capitalism, materialism, and objective science intersect. Their interconnected natural collective consciousness is like the raw function of a brain to her, likened to a network. It isn’t until Grace is mortally wounded and experiences the Na’vi’s healing ceremony that she is able to transcend the capitalistic, materialistic terms for definition for Eywa to have a spiritual experience, and to become one with Eywa herself (”she’s real.”)
In a plot that hinges on the material (Unobtainium) interests of a capitalist mercenary force, the ultimate refutation of this is the Na’vi’s spiritual values.
Tumblr media
4. avatar: endgame
So what is this all working towards? Well, the idea of an interconnected spirituality like Eywa. The idea takes root in geomantic ideas, more commonly known as “feng shui”-- it’s sort of the concept of an earthly energy, a flow that moves through and connects the Earth and its people and creatures. The strange braid cord things that allow the Na’vi to interface with certain points and other creatures is a very straightforward metaphor for that concept of feng shui and geomancy.
Here we come back around to the concept of Jake as the White Savior/chosen one/The Guy. It’s kind of obtuse, but the general theory is that Eywa chose Jake as a sign that all peoples must needs transcend their boundaries and become one with the larger concept that Eywa represents. This of course comes packaged with an urgent environmental message-- our life is that of the planet, and to exploit and sacrifice one is to sacrifice the other.
Pandora, Eywa, and the Na’vi represent the polar opposite of everything that capitalist imperialism is. Thus, James Cameron, ironically, used a huge budget Hollywood endeavor to refute everything that Hollywood is. Now he’s making Alita: Battle Angel.
Funny how that works. Oh, I made myself sad.

So, when Alec asks, after one more globetrotting date, "When do I get to take you somewhere?", he's not really prepared for the question. The sharing of experiences is a two-way street, and some things can only be seen by looking close.  ---   Five times Magnus finds himself in Alec's spaces, and the little discoveries they both make there. Link has an Akira-esque motorcycle now and that’s awesome, but this DLC is just kinda OK
So, what is presumably the final piece of DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild dropped about two days ago at The Game Awards 2017. It was one of those shadowy, no-promotion announcements that only Nintendo can get away with, and it was exciting, if only because the trailer showed Link on a FRIGGIN’ GUARDIAN MOTORCYCLE, DAMN SON. Also, following the tradition of Breath of the Wild having some of the best promotional artwork in the business, the drawing released to promote this DLC pack is basically an Akira reference! Thats so dope! But when it came time to fire up the actual DLC and gave it a whirl...I found myself kinda underwhelmed. (If you haven’t played it yet, go do that first, because spoilers lie ahead.) I’m not going to say that The Champion’s Ballad is a disappointment, because the fact that I wasn’t feeling it is mostly due to my own overblown expectations. But from looking at some reactions in the ResetERA official thread, I think it’s fair to say that myself and a host of other people were expecting something different. Ever since Breath of the Wild’s DLC plan was announced, Nintendo was hyping this second content pack up with promises of a “new original story.” From their ambiguous wording, it seemed like DLC pack 1 - the one that introduced the game’s Master Trials - was supposed to be the gameplay-focused package filled with a hard mode and other challenges, while DLC pack 2 was the one that was going to go heavy on plot content. Some people speculated that we’d be able to play as the deceased Champions or as Zelda herself. I wasn’t expecting anything that ambitious, but I was hoping for something like a little epilogue, or maybe a new map or island to explore.
What was actually released is maybe 30% story content and 70% stuff like the first DLC pack, AKA more endgame challenges and Shrines. The Champion’s Ballad, which is only unlockable after you’ve beaten the four Divine Beasts, actually starts off weirdly in that it makes you go back to the game’s starting area and clear out several enemy camps with a new weapon called the “One-Hit Obliterator,” which lets you KO baddies in a single strike but also decreases your health down to a fourth of a heart. New, more deviously difficult Shrines pop up after you clear out the camps, and once you’re finished with all of them, the Obliterator disappears...making it a strange, temporary tool that seems solely designed to create an arbitrary difficulty ceiling.
Once you’re done with the One-Hit Obliterator section, you’re sent to four corners of the map. At each location you need to complete three more tasks AND more shrines before tackling a boss and unlocking a never-before-seen memory of each Champion. (Finally, story stuff!) Unfortunately, here’s where I started to get weary, because the challenges to unlock said memories are mainly rehashed tasks from the main game (like sand seal surfing), the Shrines are all sorta annoying and the bosses are the same versions of Ganon that you fought in the past, only slightly harder and now in some nebulous “illusory” realm that looks like it was run through an Instagram filter. (It was at this point when I realized that this DLC felt more like a remix album than anything else.)
At the very end, there is one new Divine Beast to conquer, followed by an all-original boss battle that’s arguably one of the best parts of the DLC. If you’re successful, Link wins himself a spiffy new motorcycle that makes travelling around Hyrule a breeze...except it’s also kind of useless because by the time players unlock it, there’s just not that much left to DO, unless you’re still trying to collect all of the Korok Seeds or complete the game’s original 120 Shrines.
Don’t get me wrong, the bike certainly is a fun toy to play with and has resulted in some amusing videos on YouTube. And the new memories, though they amount to little more than 15 minutes in total, are very good. (There’s one scene in particular of Link, Zelda and all the other Champions that’s practically tear-inducing.) But the questline that you need to endure to get the bike and these teeny nuggets of plot just didn’t feel worth it, IMO. It seemed like it was designed to appeal to a certain type of player - the ones who are 100% completionists and loved the complexity of Breath of the Wild’s Shrines.
If you’re one of those persons, then I think you’ll enjoy this DLC. Sadly, I’m not a member of that group, and I’ve mentioned in the past that dungeons have never been the main reason why I’ve been attracted to Zelda games. For me, I play Zelda to be swept away by a sense of adventure, and the experience of climbing mountains, racing across Hyrule Field and learning more about a post-apocalyptic world was what made Breath of the Wild one of my favorite games of 2017, not its 120 Shrines. If you’re in the same camp as me and haven’t already bought the game’s $20 season pass, I recommend just watching the new cutscenes and boss fight on YouTube and calling it a day.
Speaking of that $20 season pass (which is the only way to purchase the game’s DLC), do I consider it a waste of money in hindsight? Well, not entirely. I did enjoy parts of the Master Trials in DLC pack 1, possibly because that stuff came out shortly after the game’s release and was never advertised as a “new original story.” Would I have enjoyed The Champion’s Ballad more if it had been released earlier and if the marketing language hadn’t shot my expectations skyward? Yeah, probably. As it stands, I still maintain that Breath of the Wild is a fine game, but when it comes to the post-launch content, I need to point out that we live in a world where Horizon: Zero Dawn - The Frozen Wilds, Bloodborne: The Old Hunters and both Witcher 3 expansions (the gold standard of recent downloadable content, in my eyes) all exist. DLC doesn’t have to be arbitrary stuff that should have been included in the base game, which kinda feels like the case here.  Nintendo can, and should, consider doing a little better next time.
I made the Breath of the Wild/Akira comparison pic myself! Though a quick peek at Twitter shows that I wasn’t the only one with that bright idea...

Marvel Fic Recs:
For @intezaarlily
This is a mess of a rec, but I tried to pick the ones I enjoyed the most/thought were the most interesting reads. Keep an eye out for triggers and warnings, which the authors have mostly already tagged in their works. But if you have any questions or are looking for more, let me know!
4 Minute Window by Speranza (Bucky/Steve)
"Look, if they catch me," Bucky muttered, "they're either going to kill me or they're going to put me in a box with a little window and—Steve, I can't."
a line that goes all the way by napricot (Bucky/Steve)
"About six months after he left Bucky in cryostasis in Wakanda, Steve got a text from an unidentified number: He is awake and well, and wants to see you."
Steve and Bucky reunite and reconnect, with some help from modern technology.
A Place To Put My Heartache (Across Six Christmases) by BigSciencyBrain (Steve/Loki)
Steve's still trying to find his place in this world. Accidentally saving Loki's life doesn't help. But maybe there's a place for both of them, together.
Clint Barton and the Howling Commandogs by galwednesday (Bucky/Steve, Kate/America)
All five of the dogs were in the backyard, bounding enthusiastically through an obstacle course assembled from the kind of junk that accumulated in rich people’s attics. There were platforms made of legless chairs, tents of old tablecloths to run through, and a pile of sofa cushions the dogs took great delight in plowing into. The dogs were being directed by a one-armed man with long brown hair and a serious case of resting murderface.
"You guys," Clint hissed. "That's the Winter Soldier."
"Oh, word?" America said. She looked idly at her nails.
"You knew?"
Kate rolled her eyes. "Of course we knew. How many one-armed amnesiacs do you think are running around these days? It's fine, I shot at him a little when he first turned up to make sure he wouldn't go berserk."
"He was real polite about it," America said. "Didn't return fire or anything." (In which Clint liberates a pack of serum-enhanced dogs and ends up collecting one more stray than he bargained for.)
family means no one gets left behind or forgotten by cosmicocean (Bucky/Steve)
“Why did you think I wouldn’t like you for being gay?” Steve asks gently.
“You’re Captain America.” Eli’s got his teeth clenched and is resolutely looking ahead. “You stand for truth and justice and the American way. You stand for American morals. You stand for…” he shrugs awkwardly. “Not people like me.”
Steve blows the air out of his cheeks slowly, trying to figure out how to keep the anger out of his voice so Eli doesn’t think it’s at him.
Or, Steve comes to terms with his new world, and gains some children in the process.
The Favor of the King by thingswithwings (T’Challa/Sam)
T'Challa – King T'Challa of Wakanda, the Black Panther, Guy Who Dresses Up Like a Cat to Fight Crime or Possibly for Other Reasons, Who the Fuck Knows – T'Challa corners Sam during one of their visits to check in on Bucky and says, in a mild voice that should not sound as threatening as it does, "We need to talk."
"We do, huh," Sam says, looking him up and down. He's just a king and a superhero and a genius inventor and possibly the richest man alive, looking way too fine and wearing the hell out of a tailored three-piece suit; Sam can hold his own against this guy.
How to Woo the Winter Soldier by writeonclara (Bucky/Steve)
“I think I’m ready to date again,” Steve said.
“What,” Natasha said.
“What?” Clint said, lowering his binoculars. He blinked at the dumbstruck look on the Captain’s face, then followed his gaze to where he was staring dopily at—at the Winter fucking Soldier.
“Steve, no,” Clint groaned.
Or: Steve courts the Winter Soldier.
homefront by copperbadge (Steve/Tony)
Steve Rogers is a capable leader, a kind and cheerful man, a good friend, a strong role model, and a loyal soldier. He's also teetering on the edge of suicide.
the lines, here are written by dfotw (Steve/Loki)
In a world where everyone has their soulmate's name written on their wrists, Steve Rogers has quite a lot more... and Loki, a lot less. (follows canon faithfully except for, y'know, the trope.)
lord send me a mechanic if I’m not beyond repair by suzukiblu (Sam/Bucky)
Barnes’s daemon has a name, obviously, but he only ever calls her “Sweetheart”. At least, Sam’s fairly sure no daemons named their kid that in the 1910s, but hey, what does he know, maybe it was like the kids who used to get named after weird virtues and vices back in the Puritan days; maybe she’s lucky not to be Chastity or Prudence or Bread-of-Life.
Steve never calls her Sweetheart, though.
The Many Doors of Niu Heimar by nixajane (Steve/Loki)
In the weeks before Thor's coronation, Loki almost dies, not once, but twice. (An AU in which events conspire to keep Loki from the choices he made in Thor, a war is on the horizon and the chosen battlefield is Earth, and the Avengers assemble with an extra teammate and one less villain to fight).
Maybe Home is Somewhere I’m Going by astolat (Sam/Steve)
They were about fifty miles from Atlanta when Sam stirred and yawned awake in the passenger seat. “Morning,” Steve said: the sun had come up, but the two-lane road was still pretty empty, a little morning mist hanging low over the asphalt and in the trees.
Medvezhonok by lanyon (Bucky/Steve, but mostly gen)
The Winter Soldier is on the run and no one is more surprised than he is by the fact that he is accompanied by a little boy who seems convinced that he is his father:
“What’s that, Papa?”
Papa flinches and looks at Stefan. “It’s called a Kalashnikov,” he says, in a strange voice. “You’re not to touch it, okay?”
No, Mr. Bond I Expect You to Pine by galwednesday (Bucky/Steve)
"Agent Rogers. We have to stop meeting like this." The Winter Soldier crouched in front of where Steve was slumped against the wall, hands and forearms glued to the stone behind him by some kind of sticky polymer. "Comfortable?"
"No," Steve lied. "My blood circulation has been cut off. I've lost all feeling in my hands."
"Oh, so I should probably cut you loose," the Soldier deadpanned. "It's a medical emergency. You don't want to be responsible for me losing limbs, do you?"
"Tell you what, if you lose your hands, I'll make you some new ones." He held up his metal hand, smallest finger crooked. “Pinkie promise.” Secret Agent adversaries-to-lovers AU where the Winter Soldier keeps tying Captain America to walls and sticking around to chat. Shut up, Natasha, it’s not flirting, okay? (It’s definitely flirting.)
one cloud feels lonely by thecommodore_squid (orphan_account) (Bucky/Steve)
“I’m going to take a break for a while,” Steve said quietly, not looking at T’Challa, not knowing that this was what he was gonna do until the words were out of his mouth. “I can’t be on a team right now.”
T’Challa nodded as if he understood. “Alright.”
AKA
In which Steve and Bucky both figure out how to be a person again, and it still takes them over 130 years.
Sparked Up Like a Book of Matches by Sena
(Bucky/Steve)
Steve lives in Stark Tower and doesn't have much to do when he's not going after Hydra strongholds. He attends charity events to make Pepper happy. He goes hiking with Sam. He hangs out with Clint in Bed-Stuy and watches Dog Cops. Sometimes Tony gives him super alcohol in a sippy cup. Sometimes he sees Bucky out of the corner of his eye and wonders if it's real or if he's starting to lose his mind.
Alternately, the one with terrible jokes, a foot chase through the Lower East Side, and a tiny little robot named Shitcan.
This, You Protect by owlet (Bucky/Steve)
The mission resets abruptly, from objective: kill to objective: protect
when we come home by augustbird (Bucky/Steve)
Fighting is hard. Rebuilding is harder. Post-Endgame AU.
