We don't need hope. Be grateful for the present and enjoy it.

Hiro Sachiya (27 July 1936) is a Japanese religious analyst

On the Buddha's words in the Majjhima Nikāya, "Don't have hope", he says:

Hope exists in the future. The future is not in our purview.  Yet we plan for next week, next month and next year.

Even if you are a very rich person, if you ask for a thousand or ten thousand dollars to allow you to re-use yesterday's twenty-four hours, it is not possible. Similarly, if you ask for a large sum of money and ask to be allowed to use tomorrow's 24 hours today, you will not be listened to. In this sense, time is given equally to all of us.

So what is it that should be done today ......? It is not preparation for tomorrow.

The Buddha said, "Do not hope for the future!" is teaching us not to have hope for the future and at the same time not to worry about the future. That is how I interpret it.

We have no choice but to live well today.

「希望はもつな」という中部 (ちゅうぶ、巴: マッジマ・ニカーヤ) にあるブッダの言葉について、氏はこう語る：

希望とは未来に存在します。未来のことはわたしたちの権限にありません。それなのにわたしたちは、来週のこと、来月のこと、来年のことを計画しています。

たとえあなたが大金持ちであっても、千金・万金を出して昨日の二十四時間を再使用させてほしいと言っても、それは無理です。同様に大金を積んで、明日の二十四時間を今日使わせてほしいと頼んでも、聞き入れられるわけがないのです。その意味では、時間はわたしたちに平等に与えられています。

では、今日なすべきこととは何でしょうか......？それは、明日のための準備ではありません。

釈迦が「未来を願うな！」と言ったのは、未来に対して希望を持たないと同時に、先のことをあれこれ悩むなと教えているわけです。わたしはそのように解釈します。

わたしたちは、今日をしっかりと生きるよりほかありません。
