Hmmm Ian. I think for the first time I actually disagree with you. I DO think the Oz or Tara conflict of the episode pays off. I DO see it as an informed choice. I think it’s perfectly possible for Oz to still be around Willow even after this episode revealing that Oz can just basically wolf out now whenever he gets angry. I feel like that’s something she could deal with and it’s Oz that can’t accept it. But she accepts it along with him because she’s actually chosen to be with Tara and probably finds it easier if he just disappears as to not come between them.

What doesn’t work for me about this episode is that Oz wolfs out because of the information that Willow and Tara are involved. That to me seems like violent masculinity and therefore doesn’t exactly put Oz in the best light since he now just seems like an aggressive and jealous asshole and therefore Riley is actually in the right about him being dangerous. But nevertheless, Willow has handled danger like that before and she will again. So Oz’s inability to control ‘the beast’ is not the issue here, although it very much should be. The issue is that she’s with someone else. With Tara. So I believe she does very much make an informed choice because Oz driving back into her life asking for her back is something she still has to consider regardless. It would make it easier to just go back to the man she still has feelings for, right? There’d be less stress and fear.

Maybe the right word for it isn’t “choice”. I think “affirmation” works better. And I think to truly understand this as an “affirmation”, you need to have personally been in the predicament Willow is in in the episode which is probably why you don’t have much to say about the confession scene. It’s not something you can relate to or resonate with on the level of a closeted lesbian or WLW. Willow has an affirmation to continue her relationship with Tara - a woman - even though her previous lover - a man - has come back into her life specifically to ask for her back as a lover. It’s a validating affirmation.

Willow had already chosen from the start. What she’s grappling with is whether it’s the right choice to make now that her ex wants her back. Something she’s wanted most of all has unexpectedly happened. There’s not a single point in the episode where Willow specifically states whether she should stay with Tara or go back to Oz. The only thing she tells Buffy - and us - is that it’s complicated. It’s hard for her but her choice remains what it always was. Tara. It’s an affirmation what Willow goes through in this episode. Whether her love for Tara will prevail or whether what she still feels for Oz will change her mind. It didn’t. In this moment her relationship with Tara mattered more than that of what she desperately wanted with Oz. It’s a statement of choosing what makes her the happiest.

New Moon Not Rising

I finally continued my rewatch of Buffy. I don’t know if and how I’m gonna continue my Willow/Buffy scene compilations and thoughts, but I do have thoughts, that are even tangentially related to that: I don’t love New Moon Rising.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid episode. Willow’s coming out scene is sweet, her scenes with both Tara and Oz are good, but the main plot is missing something crucial, and that is importance. At the end of the day, everything returns to the status quo, except now Willow is out to Buffy, and her and Tara are a bit closer. But the main question of the episode, whether Willow will choose Oz or Tara, just resolves itself by Oz leaving, again, for the same reason he did last time. Except last time it had a huge impact, Willow was a mess for three episodes after it; now, there is nothing. Oz is barely, if ever, mentioned not just in the next three episodes, but the next three seasons.

And it didn’t have to be this way. I understand that Oz had to be gone for good, because the actor wanted out. That’s fine. But. What if they shuffled things around a bit, have Willow be a more active part of the episode, while arriving at the same result? It didn’t have to be much. Just let Willow choose Tara. Before Oz changes. Let Willow decide to be with her; let her sit Oz down and tell him. Maybe Oz is heartbroken, and that’s what makes him change, not getting uncharacteristically angry at Tara. And the rest can be the same, they rescue Oz, he leaves, but now Willow chose, and the episode mattered.

(Not to talk about how this version could very easily fix the issues with Willow’s sexuality, just with a few lines of dialogue. I understand that external pressure prevented making her bisexual, or exploring her orientation more, but giving any explanation would have been better, and it wouldn’t have felt like someone just switched a bit in a video game character.)

-Virgo Venus are probably the most nervous/shy when having intimate relations with their S/O the first times (or first very few times)

-I’m sorry but Scorpio in the Big 3 or Venus can NOT do friends with benefits. Even if they DON’T catch feelings they will try to claim you or not want to share you with others (regardless if the relationship stays hidden or not). If they do catch feelings they will try to manipulate the situation to have you stay if possible

*NOTE: even if Scorpio in Big 3/Venus are like this they can and will cut you off at any point if they notice you playing the game dirty (because they like the game just not in a way that they deem “too toxic”)

-I’ve noticed specifically with Sagittarius Suns/Mercuries (Very similar to Pisces Suns/Mercs) will pitch ideas on what to do to friends/acquaintances and will wait until someone funds the idea for them. They will repeat the pitch until they somehow end up doing it (ex: they want to go to the beach but have no car or means to get there, telling people how cool the beach is will eventually get someone to take them to do it without cost to themselves).

-Pisces Suns/Mercuries on the other hand will Lowkey force you to do (or give them) the idea they pitched, they do this by sharing the idea and then using their mental/telepathic forces to agree. Either way, Sagittarius and Pisces are great at having others funding their experiences

*NOTE: Pisces and Sagittarius suns/mercs are good at this with EXPERIENCES. Ive noticed it doesn’t do well with materialistic items or resources

The great thing about Willow and Tara’s romantic/sexual relationship is how natural and normal they treat it. Yeah, there’s jokes about them being lesbians every now and again but it’s not in a gratuitous or creepy way. It’s always in a very funny and relatable way. There’s also gender stereotypes between them but it never really has anything to do with them being a couple. They’re treated very much like every other couple on the show is - which means they’ll have their conflicts and drama every now and again just like the straight couples do.

The fact that they are equal to the straight couples in how they’re treated, for me, only serves to give them proper and true representation. The only way they can’t be equal is with the explicit sexual stuff because network censors were a thing back then. But believe me when I say - just like Xena and Gabrielle - it works for them to be less sexual and more emotional. There are really heavy things that this couple deals with that no other couple does and in that way they are special in their own right. And I really can’t go into more detail than that but trust me when I say that what people hate about this couple, I love them for it. For representing that. It makes them real, it makes them genuine, and that is true representation. Avoiding or masking it is not.

Again, I can’t go into detail as to what I mean by this - but you’ll know what I mean when you get there. It’s one hell of a ride Kassidy. Willow and Tara may not be the best WLW representation there is. But, to me, they are the truest. Meaning they feel very real. You will not get fairytale crap with this WLW couple.
