Started watching SNW season 2 episode 3 and my eyes literally glazed over the moment they both came out in matching all black hoodie-leather jacket-jeans outfits and I couldn’t keep watching after that
#it was TOOO BOOOOORING for me............I want to see HIJINKS I don't care about augments or war or whatever#the augment thing was fine in the last episode bc it also had a courtoom drama and I /do/ like courtroom dramas and mystery plots#but this one was just La'an and [redacted] having a very boring date on modern day Earth which ties into something something augments Khan#the only fun part was Pelia v_v#my opinion is very biased I really can't stand more grimdark metallic war depression type plots#I skip a lot of the borg stuff on Voyager for that reason ... I'm an early seasons silliness type of guy#I hope the next episode of SNW gets back to aliens and hijinks and people in bright clothing trying to worm their way outta THIS mess#idk if this episode is fun for people who actually do care about/understand the khan stuff and the augments stuff#but please don't explain it to me v_v it will never penetrate my heart#idk how to describe 'grimdark metallic' but it's like Picard...it doesn't feel warm. It's glossy and cold.#I don't like that vibe for star trek v_v#also THIS is what it looks like when I'm not having fun so you see I was telling the truth when I said I had fun the last episode#even though I was making fun of it relentlessly...episodes can be fun-bad and I'll still thoroughly enjoy them I just couldn't get into this#please!!!! -dying- please...the goofs and gags.....#livetweeting#please star trek...the STRANGE (NEW) worlds.....not shitty earth...I'm ON shitty earth!!!

Pondering the different versions we've had of Kirk, Spock, and Bones.
There's actually no one version of Trek which is flawless. We can set TOS as the gold standard, or we can pick and choose.
For me, it goes like this:
Pine Kirk: best looks. I'm sorry, young Shatner looks pretty nice but he is not in the same league.
Tumblr media
Shatner Kirk: best characterization. Because of the changes in the Kelvin timeline, AOS Kirk is a completely different guy. There are similarities, but TOS Kirk has a gravitas I really like. He's not a kid. He's a starship captain.
Tumblr media
Wesley Kirk: I hated him at first, but I'm starting to see it. You can see Kirk's kindness, his way of getting people to open up to him (even La'an!), his ability to get the best out of people.
Tumblr media
Still, he looks kinda like a muppet. Idk.
Nimoy Spock: best looks. The other two are great, sure, but the cheekbones? The lanky but strong figure? The VOICE?! You can't beat Nimoy Spock.
Tumblr media
Quinto Spock: best characterization. I know, how can you outSpock the original Spock, but bear with me. TOS struggled a bit sometimes to decide who Spock would be. He's serious, deadpan, and then they get bored and spray him with sex pollen or something to get him to do something else. Quinto has the advantage of a serious character arc where we get to see the tension between Spock's feeling and emotion, his human and Vulcan sides. I consider the backstory in the 09 movie absolutely canon for the main timeline.
Tumblr media
My only complaint is, destroying Vulcan is too sad. Seriously, JJ. We can traumatize Spock without throwing a massive complex trauma into the entire universe that every future work is going to have to cope with.
Peck Spock: he certainly is hot, and his voice is much more like Nimoy's than Quinto's is. He does have the tension that Quinto has, though in a less intense form. He's missing a bit, though. Why isn't he greener? Where is your eyeshadow, Mr. Spock? Where is your SASS? As Strange New Worlds continues, I really hope he grows in his ability to sass.
Tumblr media
Bones: honestly??? Kelly and Urban are the same dude. Karl Urban simply becomes Bones. Hard to have a preference of one over the other when they are both so perfect. TOS Bones does have the advantage of looking older, which seems more in character for a guy that grumpy. But AOS Bones is of course much hotter.
Tumblr media
What do you guys think? Am I wrong? Who did these amazing characters best?

I’m a sucker for Steve learning about the party’s interests, do you have any thoughts about the kinds of things he’d do for each party member? (E.g. he has the ability to recognize tony hawk, despite his inconspicuousness, because of max’s skateboarding)
Actually now I'm obsessed with the idea that Steve is one of the few people who are not personal friends with him who is able to identify Tony Hawk without a skateboard. Like. Steve is an athlete and respects athleticism, and gives credit where it is due. (He does NOT allow making fun of Olympic athletes, even the weird sports, just because some people don't appreciate how hard you work for it.) So he's like "wow that Tony guy sure is talented. He is so high in the air. Good for him." And never forgets his face. At some point someone shares one of those "didn't recognize actual skate legend Tony Hawk " stories except it ends with "and then the guy in pastels standing beside Eddie Munson slapped his (Eddie's) chest and went "hey!! That's Tony Hawk!! Let's see if we can get an autograph for Max!" And I realized I had been making awkward small talk about cocktail weenies with sports legend Tony Hawk while working up the courage to ask Eddie Munson for an autograph."
He also tries to learn how to Ollie but he's actually really nervous and wears all the protective gear possible and is only able to go forward. (This is from my personal experience being post concussive and not a good skater. It's scary! My brain meat is delicate!) But Max tells him it's okay and talks about the skatepark in California and some of her old friends from there, and he tries to teach her how to make fried rice.(one of the only actual meals that isn't breakfast food he can cook really well completely from scratch) She gets him to do her hair with El because Steve is the only other person who understands that for El hair is a means of control, and that taking care of it is something important to that feeling.
He and El do jigsaw puzzles together and listen to folk music I think. El would appreciate having the option to talk or not, and likes listening to Steve talk too. Also I like jock El so he gets her overly invested in the Cubs like tells her all the lore and she's obsessed with the goat and she joins a softball team. When she first yells at an umpire for a bad call Steve almost cries of pride. Like. Finally. He's not the only one who Gets It.
Lucas and him bond over basketball yes. But Lucas doesn't yell at refs, and Steve gets why but thinks it's very fun when people yell at officials. Also I think they watch clouds together after practicing. Just nice peaceful, laying on warm blacktop and staring at the sky. Maybe El joins them and Lucas and El can bond this way too. Steve and his little jock siblings. (Why does no one consider max a jock for skateboarding? I guess it wasn't really seen as a sport for a long time...hm..)
Steve also bought a flat of new coke before they stopped selling it and keeps it for Lucas on movie nights or whatever and everybody always yells and groans because where is getting that!! It was discontinued!! Also they watch anime together. Erica and Robin join.
I can see him getting into some video games with Dustin and Mike and Lucas. Only the two or more player ones though he doesn't like playing alone. Like. Okay this whole post has anachronisms but please imagine him playing Lego Star Wars (complete saga) with Dustin. The chaos. The yelling.
He's absolutely a pinball guy. They go to the arcade and everyone does their thing but then end up cheering Steve on as he goes for idk star trek pinball glory. Without even tilting it! Idk what to tell you but Steve def loves pinball.
Also before his dad cut him off or after he gets some kind of inheritance he does a very financially secure impulse buy: he purchases an arcade game. Full size. I am partial to Asteroids because that's what my dad impulse bought in the 80's and had it in our basement growing up but let's keep this going he has a themed pinball machine. Icon.
He 100% reaches Dustin to drive. Mrs. Henderson asked him because Steve just looked sad when she mentioned teaching him and she was like well...we could BOTH teach him :) (because she has mentally adopted him. She told him to call her Ma and he does and Robin is like Steve. That's your mum now. And Steve's like no... Everybody calls her that. And she saysnSteve. Only Dustin. Her actual literal son. Calls her that. Guess what that makes YOU.)
Steve and whole party Lego Building Buddies? Mayhaps?
I wish tamagotchis were out in the 80's because Steve would be so diligent a Tama babysitter Erica would sell his services to her friends if they needed it lmao. He'd get all squinty and concentrated you know he'd highscore jump rope but not get the shapes game (me too buddy). Alas. Not to be.
Instead he listens to her talk about her elementary and middle school drama while looking for four leaf clovers. He also has watched MLP with her and may have teared up a little. Also, of course, she is his one true Game Master. Sorry Eddie
Mike is harder...maybe they bond over making snarky comments about people in movies, and then talk about how actually is car racing a sport? And it'd be sort of awkward because Mike has Nancy as an older sibling (even if they don't get along) and he's holding on to animosity that's pointless now. Plus Dustin and Lucas both seem to see Steve as a big brother and friend figure, but like. It's a bit weird for Mike. But still, Mike knows if he bikes to Steve's at two am he'll be hauled in and forced to sit down and asked if he wants a hug and hot chocolate.
Same with will, except Will has Jonathan (El does to but it's different) so at first they're sorta🧍🧍 staring at each other. Steve has to be like sooooo wanna. Tell me about Wizards? Or something? Cool...rocks? And Will would realize that this guy's just, y'know. A guy. Probably similar to Mike except he's not begrudging about it.
I guess a lot of Steve and the party is him listening to them and letting them actually be silly and kids, making snarky comments about the highschool dramas happening, and encouraging them to try different things (he did!) And figure out what they like outside of what they think the rest of the party likes.

On the topic of 19th century polar expedition were everyone are greatly unprepared for what they were actually doing
Well the original reason i started to look up different polar expeditions was because i stumbled over the swedish engeeiner Andrée attempt to reach the north pole in:
A hydrogen balloon!
Tumblr media
When the technology was new! And he knew very little about actually using the balloon. But he knew even less about the north pole.
They went in summer because:
1.
"The north pole got great weather in the summer for a balloon. Always sunny and and calm above the still ocean and smooth ice sheet"
(In reality summer means non stop fog and shifting winds. The ice sheet is melting and then freezing when the temp hovers around zero degress. This means it melts, moved and crashes into itself non stop.
The ice at the north pole is not you know. Anchored in land. Except at the edges were it sometimes reaches land. But in the summer it does not always reach land. So, no calm ice sheet, it is stormy broken landscape of arctic ocean with gigantic ice sheets crashing into eachother, breaking eachother, building up fun ice walls etc while the wind and oceans moves them around)
But! Andrée was gonna go with two lads across the north pole in a balloon.
2. Start in Svalbard and then just go were the wind takes them. Then he would land in "alaska, russia or canada" and just "walk to the nearest town and then take the train back to sweden idk"
(seriously his plan for post north pole flight was. Well i will be somewere in the arctic, i guess i will find humans and then go home?
At least, to his credit he knew and admitted that humans lived nearby the north pole, and he would be able to. Talk to them about how to get home. On the other hand, he was swedish so.... sweden has 30% of its surface within the polar circle. He started his travel from Norways Svalbard. So honestly, living in total ignorance of the people in northen sweden and norway would be absurd. And that it logically should be lots of people in equally northen places who knew in which direction the nearest train station/harbour were.
But! Some southern 19th century swedes would not have realised this so??? The bar is so low it have sunken to the south pole, but!)
But problem here is of course not that he gets that there are people to talk to when you have crossed the north pole. It is, that he do not grasp he might need to walk 1 week to reach these people. And what would our three stockholm dwelling southern swedes wear for their north pole expedition?
3. Normal southern swedish winter clothes! For you know around -10 to about -0 C. And living in a city were one can walk inside at any time.
Anyway their balloon crashed two days into the expedition on the that summer arctic ocean ice. And they needed to walk back to Svalbard archipelago.
It took 3 MONTHS. Because somehow Andrée had lived in denial that he might you know. Just crash into the arctic ocean. So all that. "I will just go the city and buy some coffee" planning did so not work out.
It took 3 months because Andrée and his two other expedition lads had no planning to actually needing to trek across the previously mentioned moving ocean ice. Also, the ice was as i mentioned MOVING.
Something they did realise. They did have all the academic skills in have to measure there movement across earth via stars, but not the.. pracitcal skills to solve how to get were they wanted to go.
Tbh i impressed that these 3 stockholm lads, all academic types, made it 3 months. What i mean is that, i would except most current day stockholmers to die much earlier tbh.
They also hunted polar bears like it is no big deal??? I mean they had guns so it was not difficult as such. But once again, tbh would expected my fellow stockholmers to be eaten earlier.
In general they appear to be good at hunting, which tbh finds interesting in contrast to other failed polar expedition were they run out of food. Perhaps swedens population having a hunting tradition were it was a important part for both getting food and the get money for ones household helped?
What i mean is that hunting was not just a upper class hobby as in some european countries at the time. It was just a normal way people got food.
Anyway, ones again the bar is low it sunk to the south pole haha. The 3 lads of Andrée expedition knew how to hunt and prepare wild animals. As the majority of people living within and near the polar circle
ANYWAY
In the end they did reached the Svalbard archipelago again. Finally not on moving ice anymore! But it was a remote island few ever visited... Shortly afterwards they all three die.
Exact cause of death is unknown, but personally i am surprised these 3 stockholmers even lived 3 months on sea ice?? 3 unprepared stockholmers? Like i am just like, obvoiusly they would not survive, there are so many things that can kill when you are just 3 indoor lads out in the arctic so....
We know all these details btw because in the 1930s the found the expedition and all there papers. And photos! Lots still able to be looked so
Anyway this was a rambling info dump of what i learned about the Andrée expedition these lasts days

the show has established how much ted loves and misses kansas from day one sorry you're too stubborn to accept it
lol not gonna deny the stubbornness, but to me it really didn't feel like they show did enough to establish ted missing and longing for kansas?
like qualitatively what did they show from him as a character about his missing kansas itself? his tshirt collection, peanut butter and bbq sauce, mentioning the state flower? bitching about local stuff? like um ok?
this might just be coming from my own experiences as a 15-year emigrant, but like... i long for bagels, i really do. it's one of the greatest tragedies of my life that i no longer fly back to the states through new york and getting real bagels is now a long and miserable planned trek. i genuinely can taste in my mouth rn a toasted sesame bagel with a schmear of veggie cream cheese from bagel boss on merrick road my god i would do crimes. don't even get me started on real deli pickles gOD all pickles here are sweet it's so deeply wrong. (and btw our state flower is the rose very sexy). don't wanna move back tho.
like...idk that's just part of the emigrant experience? like idk if they intended all of that to signal a deep and tragic desperation to go back to the wide open skies of kansas but that kind of just felt like standard emigrant behavior to me (lmao i just realised my desktop bg is literally ny street scenes too), esp bc at least one of the writers has had that experience themselves? they needed to really give ted something more to get me to believe that he's somehow got the kansas soil in his bones and would be incomplete without it.
and imo things that and like the wizard of oz pinball machine only work as symbolic emphasis if the character work has been done to give them something to emphasize? as it stands, it feels like a lot of floating symbols were thrown around instead of actual character work, attempting to cheaply borrow meaning from elsewhere to make ted's supposed homesick longing feel real.
and tbh that kind of felt like his relationship with henry too? we got the symbol of the concept of a traditional father/son relationship, we got the symbol of the legos, we got the symbol of cat stevens father and son demanding our heartstrings be pulled... but what material things were those symbols emphasizing? how much time was given to showing ted and henry's actual relationship? like even in the episode this season when henry was literally present, ted p much ignored him in favor of stalking michelle! they didn't have one-on-one conversations except for ted trying to pump him for info about dr jake??? what are we supposed to do with that?? feel like everything's healthy and cool and great for them esp isolated in kansas?
it's like a bunch of floating signifiers that we're supposed to take as substitute for actual story. here's some barbecue sauce can't you just taste the longing? listen to stevens's music - that's a relationship, right?
empty symbols just aren't good enough for me, especially when there are plenty of relationships between people and places on this show that aren't just froth with no filling.

Here is how I would fix the sequels:
Just saying… if Star Wars pulled a Star Trek and dabbled (lightly) in time travel so they could create different timelines with their different movies (aka the 2009 Star Trek movie being an alternate timeline version of the original 1960s series) and make it so the sequels exist in the alternate timeline, the vast majority of their problems would go away.
Sequel enjoyers will still be able to enjoy the movies and know that they’re still canon, but they just make a little more sense now.
Sequel haters can either finally be appeased or continue to scream into the void about how they “technically aren’t canon anymore”. They’ll be able to ignore them if they want to because they’ll exist separately but they will still actually be canon.
That way, we can stop sacrificing every future season of every show to just being set-up for making the sequels actually believable. Sure, they’ll still have to do some set-up to make this make sense, but other stories can also take place in the main timeline, aka the timeline where Anakin remains the chosen one and truly destroys Palpatine in ROTJ. We could even see the sequels characters show up eventually but get them in completely new stories.
They could make it so some huge canon event happens, and I mean huge, that somehow affects the world between worlds and leads to a new timeline being created. Some kind of force anomaly or something. Blah blah blah somehow Palpatine has still returned except this timeline is absolutely insane and the sequels happen and you can do some really wild shit with this freedom of separation from the main storyline. This is the darkest timeline and the main one can lead to something completely different in the future, separated from Palpatine completely. It also could open the doors for that what if series people want so much, depending on how they play it.
They’ve already made time travel technically canon in Rebels (with Ezra saving Ahsoka), but I understand the reluctance to potentially overuse it. If they don’t want to normalise time travel too much, they can just make it so whatever makes the timeline split somehow makes the entrance to the world between worlds crumble or something else that just makes it harder to access (or everyone who knows about it is either dead or refuses to talk about it).
It’s obviously not ideal but I truly think it would settle a lot of problems Dave Filoni and Lucasfilm are currently facing with shows like The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch and Ahsoka having to use most of their runtime to create eventual context for the sequels (which I actually don’t hate, they’re just pretty messy).
Also time travel is fun, but I’m heavily biased there. They don’t need to overuse it. They just need to let Ezra be Ezra (or someone else Idk) and I’m sure he’ll manage to do something chaotic enough to split the timelines.

Your posts about SNW Spock makes me so curious, could you please explain how they've done him wrong since he seems very different from the original series :O Are they making him more human despite the SNW taking place before the og?
yeah i can! im not the best person to talk about it probably since im a pretty recent trek fan and also tos/spock arent parts of trek i care about as much as a lot of other fans, but i have opinions for sure!!
firstly just up front i do not like ethan peck as spock. he does not look like spock or act in a way i am satisfied with. it feels like the only reason they cast him was because he has a deep voice. so i am going forward in this with haterism for him specifically not JUST how he is written in snw
Spock is written not like a vulcan but like an anhedonic human. actually not even anhedonic, just like a human raised in vulcan society trying to blend in. like there is nothing about him that feels genuine he just feels like woobiebait for 2012 tumblr to make flower crown edits of because he is awkward and quirky. every scene involving spock is a joke about him and his demeanor, everything he says is a wink wink nudge nudge "lol vulcans act like this and its so stupid lol logic is silly" like i can physically feel a laugh track whenever hes on screen. i enjoy jokes about vulcans but it isnt funny when there isnt anything else. its like spock showing emotion, it isnt satisfying when its a constant and not a little treat peppered in. in snw hes stifling a giggle or screaming in pain or being oopsie awkward silly every time he gets a focal scene, it takes the magic away because now it isnt a rare break in character its just how he is. Ive seen a lot of people defend this aspect as him being young and therefore less mature than in tos, but hes like approaching 30 :\ i get him being less mature but he doesnt act like a sheltered 30 year old he acts like someone freshly 18. at this point its just like…MAKE A NEW CHARACTER!!!!
as a point of contrast, i like how uhura is written in snw (in season 1 anyways, she has barely appeared in s2) she is obviously younger and is growing into her spot on the crew, but they arent hinging her character on the 1 or 2 pop culture uhura moments, retconning anything about that that doesnt align with modern media fandom, and calling it a day; they actually expand on her character outside of like idk her doing a sexy dance and her sitting at the phone (though i guess it is easier for her since she had barely any character in tos anyways). meanwhile they DO do that with spock, his bullet point top 10 iconic spock moments of sometimes being awkward and showing emotion are now the only things he is allowed to do. tldr flanderization
i also think its interesting that it is this way since ethan peck played spock in discovery and there hes the exact opposite. hes extremely serious and vulcan; which fits the tone of the show (regardless of my opinions on the tone of disco). i just dont understand how that spock translated into the snw spock. they are not the same guy.
anyways on to the biggest plot related gripe with him...how he interacts with women!!!yay!!
first theres how they decided to have multiple episodes about his, apparently, strained-yet-loving-and-involved relationship with tpring. the inclusion of t'pring feels stupid because other than the 1 minute of cheap "oh i remember her!" from someone seeing her on screen for the first time what point is there to her returning when the ONE canonical fact about her is that she and spock A: had an arranged marriage, B: did not meet in person since they were children, and C: hated each other. its not like there is a huge contingency of t'pring/spock shippers holding out since 1967 so what value does reintroducing her as a character serve? i assume its as some kind of attempt to give a woman who previously had no real character something to do, but her existence on snw is STILL only about spock and her relation to spock so there isnt any sort of feminist level up happening. including her was not interesting enough to justify retconning the plot of the most iconic episode of star trek. especially when multiple episodes tonally and stakes-wise rely on you caring about them as a couple, and anyone watching who knows who she is already knows that her and spock dont have any relationship to speak of in the future so who is this for? if you really really just NEED spock to have sex with a woman why not make a new character? that would also suck but at least it wouldnt be timeline interfering. im not even a huge continuity purist "oh no!!the timeline!!!plotholes!!!" but when the situation is the writers deliberately breaking the continuity in large ways and the outcome isnt even fun? stupid.
and now his relationship with chapel. i am way more annoyed by this one since its just gross. so from tos the only thing with them is that chapel has a crush on him and spock is not interested. also worth noting that its such a non-plot related thing that it only is revealed under the influence of alien drug virus that makes you horny. and they decided that not only was that enough to base a whole reciprocated romance arc around, but now since theyve introduced tpring back into the story, spock is now a cheater??? what is the POINT of breaking canon to introduce spocks girlfriend only to go "well actually hes horny for his coworker" like...that isnt how love triangles work youve just done a character assassination. the man who would rather kill his best friend than have sex with his wife is now fucking both her and the woman who confessed to him and he got so mad he crushed a computer with his bare hands. ok 👍. i just hate that they chose spock to be the romantic center of the show. anyone else could have been the character who gets into relationship drama why spock? there are multiple new characters who could have taken up the position. and its not like spock has nothing else to do as a character without it
to say things specifically about the most recent epsiode since it was particularly annoying and showed things that happen throughout the series:
firstly spock just does shit thats stupid. illogical even. i know the whole logical fallacy moment with vulcans but when it isnt a point of note in the show and rather just happens as if its a normal occurrence for spock as a person im like...he would be a laughing stock on vukcan and not have any of the positive reputation he holds.
the plot of this ep was basically that spock gets turned completely human and they just miss literally the whole point of it. vulcans have MORE emotion than humans, they ACTIVELY suppress it. yet when spock is turned human he just experiences human emotion completely emotionally? he should be having an EASIER time suppressing his emotions. and OMG he gets a BONER because he sees a hot WOMAN LOL LOL isnt that funny? spock got hard isnt that hilarious? its just so cheap. they act like being human makes him a completely different person, they played it like the voyager episode where belanna gets split into human and klingon BUT in that case she was literally split into two different people (this ep had a lot of issues too ie racism but that’s a different can of worms); here spock just becomes human he still has the same memories and training and history...why would he forget what its like to be a vulcan. they could SO EASILY make excuses too but they just didnt care. and anyways bada bing bada boom the ep ends with him and chapel hooking up which i already complained about and could complain about more.
i think thats already too much so im gunna stop myself here but trust theres more i hate and other people have probably talked about this better than i have :')

tqtqtqtq 2 @f1-stuff for tagging me in this and i am very sorry especially about #1 i accidentally ended up with 1k of bulletpoints i had to cut so aksjdfaf. Anyway tagging @husbono @love-leah @cofyspooons @albonology and @boxboxlewis but no pressureee <3333
tell me about 1-5 ideas that you’ve not written a single word for yet. notes don’t count. (nsfw under da cut)
Lesbian Nuns/Convent AU this is actually my favourite little recovering catholic daydream like i think i would love a convent or an abbey if it wasnt for like. the religion LOL. ANyway, think the little hours vibes.
carlos is a disgruntled eldest daughter whose been sent to the convent to honour god. dont get me wrong she is VERY devout and prays 5 times a day like a good cath. shes just like. a bit upset because she'd grown up dreaming of a big wedding with a strappingly handsome young lord chosen for her by the king and she would get to run a household etc etc but NOW there's a civil war because people like? aren't happy? crazy. also every single other nun in this convent is like. a terrible catholic by medieval standards and like. smokes medieval weed and fucks lesbically and can read. anyway one day a horse shows up with a handsome rebel knight bleeding out on its back and sister carlos is in charge of healing him but then takes his armour off (blushed and flushed and promising to confess it all)  and its NOT a him its lesbian she/they charles leclerc and DOT DOT DOT
Disney Starstruck AU where girlYuki is wdc and alex is Just a Normal Not Like Other Girls Girl and yuki is doing a sponsor event in bangkok and accidentally bonks alex on the head or like runs her over (mildly) or something but then they are running from the paps and the fans and going incognito and alex shows yuki around the city and they eat delicious food and yuki looks at alex and alex looks at yuki with her big eyes and bigger mouth as she sips from a plastic bag and theyre under the neon lights with the smell of barbecue all around them and both of them think yeah.
Star Trek AU the issue with star trek AUs is that the fun of star trek lies in the everyday shenanigans? so like. idk what i would even write if it wasn't a pwp about half vulcan half klingon carlos going into pon farr @ human charles. or like. maquis rebel yuki rescuing first officer alex albon from an exploding shuttle. either way it would be at least partially written like First Officer's Log, stardate 2349.43221. who the ACTUAL FUCK does that security officer prick think he fucking is?? (do NOT come for me idk the timelines or how the dates work) . also i think it would be very very funny to have sexually repressed rule-stickler george russell be an orion. If you want to accurately assess the vibes watch ST:Lower Decks xx
Sex Pollen. Idk who Idk what Idk the plant in question but we as a fandom are NOT using fuck or die enough. Same goes for The Regulating Body of Our Sport Says We Need to Bang.
Scuba AU which is essentially just self-indulgence because i am romanticising my family holidays OKAY. alex is on summer break from being world champion and decides to have a fun scuba holiday in the andaman sea and charles is that one french prick who took a gap yah and never left but also unforunately he is very nice and maybe alex WILL pay extra for the nitrox course (james vowles finds out an rips him a new one) yuki is also there and pissing himself laughing at how alex's ginormous head looks in a mask and snorkel
Classic F1 AU where carlos and charles have big hair and short shorts and theyre both closeted (carlos more so, marketed as the Paragon of Masculinity and Family Values, has met the pope etc etc). They've just finished the barcelona race and carlos figures, well. its a big city and he had a bad race he deserves to feel better, feel something and like. noone from work will be there. charles walks into the gay glub and sees carlos sandwiched between 2 men. they make eyecontact. DOT DOT DOT
And Bonus! Just da Tip Au where girl!yuki is not allowed to fuck per known weirdo and freak michael italiano's instructions. fortunately for her he's a loser and only defines penetrative sex as intercourse so she's free to mess around with her championship rival alex albon who is sooooo slutty and desperate for it and begs for her to let him….u guessed it…..just da tip!!

Lilo and 3/3 by The Japanese House have just been doing something to me the past couple days, idk man.
Tumblr media
Lore(?) below the cut
I don't have a specific time frame in mind, but my idea was that this is sometime after the night elves secede and most of them go back to Kalimdor, Cathala and Tarinne included. I have a vague headcanon that I actually just checked and it's canon that ritualistic bathing in moonwells is a thing, so yay me for being a genius who knows everything I guess. Anyway as I was gonna say, I figure bathing in a moonwell is something most night elves do every couple of years or at least, like, once a decade, just as a way to feel closer to Elune and what have you *waves hands vaguely* Even besides that, moonwell water has very strong healing properties so I mean it's just benefits all around.
For the entire period of time from Teldrassil to secession (~7 or 8 years), the night elves in Stormwind only have access to one moonwell, which is all the way out in Duskwood and is a multi-day trek. Stormwind doesn't let any of the priestesses/druids make any new ones (or any proper shrines at all) in/near the city, and most of the land surrounding Stormwind City itself is farmland or owned by nobles who ALSO don't want moonwells on their property, so they're stuck with that one. Considering moonwells are one of the main types of shrines to Elune to pray/leave offerings at, this isn't super great for morale. The trip is expensive, dangerous, and even those who can afford it can't find the time. So it's a big relief to a lot of people when they can finally do so after returning to Kalimdor.
Tarinne is one of those people. Cathala is... not. Not really.
Even before Teldrassil, she wasn't the most devout. All that time on Pandaria, away from anyone else who worshiped any of her gods, wore away at her. By the time the mists parted, she was in a weird place where her kind of religion more closely resembled pandaren religion than anything night elven. Much less emphasis on gods (excluding the August Celestials, who interact with their followers a lot differently than Elune does, for example), and more emphasis on one's ancestors. That would be fine on its own, but it was just another thing that made her feel alienated among her own people. And then after Teldrassil, she (among others) felt Elune had betrayed or abandoned her in her darkest moment, so she stopped worshiping her altogether after that. But even years later, Cathala still carried a lot of guilt and doubt regarding that decision, and actually goes through ✨a Character Arc✨ regarding that while hunting Sylvanas, but that's something I want to save for a fic so that's all you get right now.
The end result is that she's in an even weirder spot by the time secession happens, still trying to figure out where she stands on this whole faith thing. So it's bittersweet when she can finally do this moonwell thing with Tarinne again, for the first time in years. Or maybe for the first time, period, I haven't quite decided.
She'll get it figured out though, Tarinne will make sure of that <3

Does Greek mythology count as a fandom? Probably not but still there's definitely the community there.
Also i don't like the minute something becomes popular like a series or movie people jump to fanart and i feel the anxious urge that i have to draw it only because it's popular and it may gain popularity.
It's general yeah for commissions but internet has become hostile to new artists so eventually just focus on what i like the most. Though it's also not bad when your art gets appreciated.
well I count everything as fandom. Greek mythology itself is.... a mythology. The entirety of myths from a specific time and place. I would say "the people who like greek mythology" can consider themselves/be considered part of a fandom for sure. fandom isn't a scientific term so we can say "the cat fandom" etc, whatever we want.
Okay yeah, I understand the fear of missing out, but we also need to remember that the fanartists usually actually like the thing. when something is popular it means many people watch it and a percentage of these people are artists. if 1 in 50 people draws, when 50 people watch something then you have only 1 making art, if 50.000 people watch it then you have a thousand artists. that's an over simplification but I hope you get my point. FOMO is an issue we need to work on in ourselves because it's a useless burden.
There's a discussion i've seen happening a lot about the problem with fandoms getting faster and faster, where the majority of fans consumme everything within a month and then forget the thing afterwards, making fanartists feel like they have to rush. That's a problem with media in general imo, and it's up to everyone individually to understand this is a problem, slow down and enjoy things more and for a longer time. But there will always be people who are fans of a thing years and years after it's done. Star trek fanart, or lotr fanart is still doing extremely well out there.
When everyone and their mother is trying to market you a new band, a new game, a new series it doesn't help. At the same time, nobody can police how long people spend on any one interest and nobody owes anyone their free time and attention.
OKay so for commissions, as I said, if your art is good, and you build yourself a small community of artists (even just a few dozens of people) who will see you making a "commissions open" and reblog it, you can get some jobs. then one job will bring another, but it's a very slow process. Another thing about commissions is that you will absolutely get orders that do not interest you at all, and unless you're crazy succesful, you'll have to take them to make a living. so if you see your "making fanart of things you maybe aren't crazy about" as part of your job, maybe that will make it easier.
But literally, don't stress. Just post your art and try to focus on growing as an artist. If you don't rely on commissions to pay rent and food, literally give 0 fucks about the audience.
Final note, it really is extremely rewarding and the best motivation, to have your art appreciated by others. The more you grow and the more you share it, the more of that you'll get. People are usually very drawn to others who are passionate. Whatever you're passionate about, share it. Be annoying, even. post stupid sketches, post whatever. I thought I was just gonna be screaming into a void about alcibiades but i've found a bunch of people who also want to scream about him and it's great.
P.S. PRO TIP I JUST THOUGHT OF. One could say this is a bad thing, idk, but the way social media is, it pays off to show yourself along with your art. I don't mean show pictures. I mean post about your day. Post your thoughts, whatever. Make your presence more personal rather than "I just post my art", especially on places like twitter and tumblr. On instagram, you can do that through stories. Share funny things, be engaging. I have favorite artists that I know nothing about, but the ones I feel like I know personally I will be more likely to support by buying merch/commissions or helping them promote their stuff. It makes people feel like they can talk to you more.

Hello! For the ask game, if you'd like!!!
S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?
T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?
Hi Parker! thank you for these!
S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?
So AS YOU KNOW I love an AU. Daemon and Star Trek AUs, and also general science fiction AUs, apocalypse and Pacific Rim and dystopia AUs. I have occasionally done a lawyers AU too. And roller derby. I did a bakery AU once! I love an AU. Never been quite sure why, either; they just really appeal to me partly because they’re fun, and I think also because translating well-beloved characters so they’re the same but different is the sort of thing that can keep you busy on long train rides.
The other trope I love, and no one ever seems to do as much as I’d like, is “I thought you were dead!” I’ve written it once or twice but I’ve never done anything really substantial with it and I want to. It’s just such an all-purpose brilliant trope! It has angst and introspection and an occasion for one half of a ship/friendship to have a long dark night of the soul, and for the other half to have an adventure (or whatever it is they’re doing while they’re not actually dead) but also a solid happy ending with proper heart-to-hearts. Everything you need.
Worth mentioning “When There’s A Will, There’s a War”, an episode of MASH which I would like more if it committed to the bit. It does do this trope. For five minutes. You’re supposed to pay off this trope with the not-dead person walking through the door, to shock and delight. The episode does not do this.
(I do like it, for many reasons not least Hawkeye and Margaret Make Bad Puns and Throw Things At Each Other. but. hmph. I ask for so little.)
T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?
CHRISTMAS. On TV I don’t mind it, mostly. The MASH Christmas episodes are doing something specific which I enjoy, and the Doctor Who, Ghosts, Dinnerladies etc Christmas specials are just part of being alive and British at the same time. Actually, Dinnerladies has a lovely cosy Christmas 1999 episode and then the millennium episode has maybe the bleakest scene I’ve ever seen in anything and it’s under the credits. I respect the hell out of that.
Anyway, it’s the schmaltzy fannish Christmas trope I can’t stand, by contrast. The happy little story where all the characters hang up stockings and put up a tree and eat a turkey and the author’s preferred ship kiss under the mistletoe. Partly it’s because I’m a misanthrope par excellence, and partly because it’s so, idk, Western imperialist? And often, clueless imperialist: written by people who have never stepped out of their immediate cultural experience. We do exist, we happy few who don’t do Christmas and nevertheless write in English on the internet, and more to the point, we exist in fiction. This sort of fic always assumes that everyone is with the programme - that Christmas is a religious and/or secular holiday that everyone celebrates. There is one really popular Deep Space Nine fic on the AO3 like this, and putting aside that half of the characters are aliens (!!) it then tramples over Julian Bashir, who has the same British-Sudanese Muslim background that his actor has. And even if you put that aside it flattens characters with (probably) Christian backgrounds, too. You have Benjamin Sisko, who is a Black man from New Orleans and Miles O’Brien, who is a white Irish Catholic from the Gaeltacht. What do they have in cultural common? Maybe not that much! So it’s quite a lot of rage to extract from what are usually quite benign plotless fluff stories, but there we are. Thank you for giving me the first opportunity this year to air this Opinion. <3

TNG UPDATE TIME. it's been ages. monday we did "a matter of time" (boo) and wednesday we did "new ground" (holy shit).
a matter of time: did you guys know the little guy here played pestilence on spn? his vibes were horrific. he was awful. i don't say that about the actor himself, who was obviously very good if he could get us to lean back from our screens like that, but i did NOT like that. not one bit. now every time i see him in spn gifs i get scared
anyway it's been awhile since we had such a huge dud and i did not miss it. everybody was extra stupid this episode to make the bad guy seem smart, My Least Favorite. he was also there ALL THE TIME instead of giving us a break from him which was also super awful
also he tried to kidnap data, though i love that he failed hilariously and also they made a new jersey joke
i predicted the twist of this episode - that he was from the past, not the future - about halfway through. so at least i get to feel accomplished about something.
i do like that deanna told him to fuck off. she's never mean to anybody but he REALLY deserved it
new ground: I LOVE WORF................
i'm soooo mad at people in the star trek calling worf a deadbeat dad. idk if he does something shitty later but i totally understood the ethical dilemma in this ep maybe even perhaps better than the writers wanted me to bc the thing is like. sorry
CHILDREN
SHOULD
NOT
BE
ON
STARSHIPS
sorry to families with children. sorry to single mothers and actually to women everywhere. sorry even to wesley crusher, my perfect precious baby boy, who i will defend with my life. they SHOULD NOT BE ON STARSHIPS.
like, ok. let's get into it. i did think it was wack that worf initially sent alexander to his human parents...but that's because he wanted his son to have access to klingon society, which was something he himself DID NOT HAVE and COULD NOT GIVE ALEXANDER had anyone known alexander was worf's son. it was TOTALLY REASONABLE for worf to be thrown headfirst into parenthood and be smart enough to say, not only am i incapable of raising a child at this juncture in my life, i am incapable of connecting him to his culture, WHICH
WAS ALSO DENIED TO HIM. BY HIS MOTHER!!! LET'S NOT FORGET HIS MOM HATED KLINGONS like ik the writers forgot but EYE DIDN'T!!!!!!!!!
alexander's mother was a half-klingon woman who HATED KLINGONS. she at MULTIPLE POINTS made racist remarks about them and self-disparaging remarks about her own klingon heritage. she even gave alexander, despite being "more" klingon than human dna-wise, a HUMAN NAME. obviously the tng writing room wasnt going yeah ofc worf wants him to have access to klingon culture after all that but OFC HE DOES
which makes it wack to me that he sent alexander off to live with his parents and not his brother. NO ONE KNOWS kurn is worf's brother. he could have raised alexander on the klingon homeworld as his own, or even as his nephew, and no one would ever have known he was connected to worf. whereas sending alexander to live with the humans who raised worf is a huge indicator that he is worf's child
one might say, well he thinks klingon schools would be too harsh for this kid who was essentially raised as a human. this is a legitimate and valid concern he has in the episode as well. worf would not be as harsh as the klingon schools but he WOULD give alexander access to his klingon heritage. so that's the happy medium! as a side bonus we also don't give alexander EVEN MORE abandonment issues. the problem is,
CHILDREN SHOULDN'T BE ON A STARSHIP. we see in this very episode why they shouldn't be on a starship. "oh the saucer can separate whenever to protect the kiddos" SPACE IS DANGEROUS. they never have the budget or the time to separate the saucer. they just take all those little guys into horrible experiments whenever. i could almost understand if it was like, a spaceship that just delivered freight or something but it's an EXPLORATORY SHIP its SOLE PURPOSE is to head into unknown dangers. DON'T TAKE CHILDREN.
meanwhile worf is late to work meetings and gets commed twice about his kid while he's trying to explain himself to picard like...now you've got to consider the fact that people on the enterprise live at their workplace. they are basically on call 24/7. like if a space disaster strikes it is not gonna wait until you are through with your weekend relaxation or are finished putting your kid to bed. you CAN'T be on a starship and raise your child at the same time because as a parent you have to put your child first always and as a starship officer where EVERYONE COULD DIE AT ANY TIME you have to put the ship first always and TWO THINGS can't BOTH be first priority
like, worf is literally doing the best he can. maybe he should have sent alexander to live with his brother when he was still a little squirt but it may be too late for that now. there are quite literally no good options here to this moral dilemma of "where does my baby belong" which is actually so good because worf ALSO doesn't have a place he totally belongs. they both have a foot in each world. i bet it would be really good if it wasn't on tng
ANYWAY. sorry. there's a post in the george kirk tag about star trek fathers that disses worf and it makes me see red every time. wow! TONIGHT: "hero worship" (forboding title i hate tng episodes with kids) and "violations" (equally forboding title but here's hoping it just means we'll be playing riker roulette).

bonjour idk if youre still taking these. ive had this question for like 2 months and its hella lame and its """for mac""" - how the heck did he get into anime? if uninterested or not doing these u can just delete lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For reference, unless the ask box is actually physically closed and you can’t even send a question, it is open. :p if you continue to come in grovelling like this to every one of my blogs i will publicly poke fun at you, you know this. Assuming I don’t have my own delete policy, the nerve... p:
anyway whenever the question is related to one getting into video games, star wars, or weeb ass shit: the gateway enabler is nearly always Edward. (Of course, for some weird reason the line gets drawn at star trek - ed is strictly on the wars side of the spectrum at the moment out of stubbornness.)
I tend to think of Ed as being the most into anime because Animethon continues (?) to be the longest running anime convention in the country - that’s right, not just Western Canada! Take that, Anime North! :) I believe it’s going to be 28 years old this year. I haven’t really watched Gundam myself, but I think Ed has a soft spot for it especially since he cameo’d in it once.
Tumblr media
At the time of writing, I haven’t been to Animethon since it stopped being held at Grant Mac (aka Anime High School as it’s affectionately known in my head because it just looks like it should be in an anime opening okay) (and I’m still an annoying U of A grad so whenever someone says it’s a University I’m like awww smol). Here’s what I imagine would be an old photo from the early-mid 2000s of Mac and Ed cosplaying Bebop (ft. Mac’s modestly hidden waifu dakimakura) :)
More below
- In terms of personal timelines: basically in y2k Ed was spending a lot of time laying low at Mac’s place for Reasons and was keeping himself busy with proper housewarming activities for Mac’s brand new First House Ever, and once they finally got some patio furniture as a temporary placeholder for Mac’s living room, Ed’s idea of a wild Friday night after all the cleaning and painting and shopping was watching anime on YTV (which, for non-Canadians is one of the kids/teens channels and according to wiki it DOESN’T actually stand for “Youth Television” so idk what to believe anymore.)
- Ralph Bucks was the popular term for a government rebate (”Prosperity Bonus”) that then-premier Ralph Klein paid out in 2005, $400 for every man, woman and child in AB (except of course me and the fam because we had just moved back and didn’t have residency lol). Government rebates are a classic Alberta government (regardless of political stripe) tactic for boosting popularity (instead of like. spending the money on actual services or solving real problems) (again looking at you danielle) Anyway $400 could be like 2 really nice gundams at least... but Mac probably also spent the rest on something else.
- i dont know when the next time I’ll be at animethon is, i do have a soft spot for it and if you attended in the past decade you might have even seen me working the pre-registration table for a few years! if you ever see someone cosplaying alberta from iamp it’s most definitely me : ); I’ve been to Anime North and Otafest and they just don’t compare U_U

I loved the AOS movies but hated that they made spock and uhura date but not for whatever reason the fandom be saying (especially with the fandom racism tag) but I hated it because uhura was literally a historical legend, who in TOS was a very strong, independent, intelligent and proud black woman main character, something rare for that time. To me her and spocks relationship seemed to make no sense.. and they took her amazing and well written character and just made her 1. Spocks translator 2. Her whole point seemed to be being his girlfriend
Idk if I’m misreading things sometimes I really don’t understand things right in front of my face but I don’t even like shipping anyone personally LOL every modern show or movie seems to NEED a romance in it
Tumblr media
thanks for your ask, anon. i am a huge star trek fan--mom my raised me on the next generation and deep space nine and voyager, and as an academic i have written about TOS. i disagree that it doesn't make sense for their characters; in fact, nimoy and nichols wanted spock and uhura to be in a relationship on TOS, but they decided to go with the uhura/kirk kiss to make a bigger impact/statement (because spock as a character was already so othered), and because a long-running interracial relationship would not have been acceptable to depict on television at the time. so jarjar abrams and the AOS writers paying homage to that history is really beautiful, i think.
beyond the context of star trek, i also think it's completely unfair to characterize women who are in romantic relationships as being"just" a girlfriend or wife. i am a strong, proud black woman. i am also a wife. you can be both. uhura is such an important character not only because she is strong--which black woman have always been allowed to be hollywood--but because she is intelligent. she is feminine. she is graceful. she is beautiful and desirable. those are things that black women are still not very often written as being (which is why i am disgusted at the way uhura is depicted in strange new worlds, but that's another issue altogether). being strong and proud and capable doesn't strip you of your femininity. being in a relationship with a man doesn't reduce your value as a woman. i do agree that, as the films went on, they reduced her screen time (to make more time for white actresses ...) and that was awful and unfair, but it has nothing to do with her relationship with spock. i also agree that i wish they had spent more time on her inner life, but they didn't spend that time building character depth for anyone who wasn't jim or spock (the worst aspect of AOS, imo).
it's difficult for me to feel that arguments against spuhura or batcat or MJ/peter or sydcarmy, etc are made in good faith because they always hit these same beats: "why does she have to be with a man?" "why can't a black woman just be strong and independent?" "why does she have to be straight?" these things are said regardless of what the female character is actually like, too. it's just a catch-all that, to me, signals that people get uncomfortable when black women are portrayed as feminine or vulnerable or sexy, especially when they are paired with a non-black man, and they start thinking of explanations for why it makes them uncomfortable.
and, like, to be frank ... no one even likes these couples! everyone fucking hated spuhura and whined about it endlessly to the extent that they throttled it from happening in canon ever again. it's the same with batcat--selina is still always drawn as white--and basically every other BW/WM couple. so why even bother arguing against it? just let us have it, man.

I think when it comes to fanfiction and when it's x reader (not OC) people will always look at you weird. Bc to them they never thought about reading something where they're putting themselves in the perspective of being loved or just having fun with their favorite character.
Lots of people day dream but I've learned that lots of others don't. And most people dream about obtaining stuff they've never had or have had so little of it but they crave more, be it: having a friend, being in a relationship, a new game they've played at a friend's house bc they can't afford it, etc etc.
So most of the time the people who don't day dream are the ones saying: why are you reading x reader fanfiction? Isn't that cringe? That's so weird.
Man, all of us reading x reader fanfiction just want to be loved by our favorite character (s). Most of us have never had a meaningful relationship or none at all at the age of 20s, 30s, 40s etc.
Also it comes with going deep within a fandom. When u dig deep and make an account at Twitter/Tumblr you will see takes, fan art and even FANFICTION. stuff u may have never experienced before. You didn't know that shit existed.
Again, most people who criticize fanfic have never dug deep into a fandom. It's a thing that's always been there. Every fandom will have fanfiction. Believe me. That's why I don't like talking to guys who like marvel and star wars like me. Like okay i enjoy it but i don't feel comfortable enough in telling them oh i read fanfiction. Bc im pretty sure they don't even know what that is and I'm not gonna be the one to explain it.
One time i joked with an internet friend how talking to guys about those fandoms is like:
Me: i love the mandalorian (the character)
Them: oh yeah!!! He's so cool
Me: no u don't get it. I need mando to fuck me 😐
When it comes to OC people are more okay with it. Bc they're not imagining themselves. They're just imagining someone else. Like in a book. But when it comes to x reader it's different bc you either do imagine yourself or imagine someone made up from your mind. And people are not really prone to imagine themselves.
I love x reader but personally i don't imagine myself. But that's another story.
Idk where i was going with this but people should know fanfiction exist and they shouldn't be icky about it. It's normal. It's been here since the 60s (star trek). (Actually it's been here for longer but that'sss another story). Idk sorry if this doesn't make sense...
I've always been very open about writing fanfiction, all my friends and parents know. Even my professor knew I wrote it, and I think that me talking freely and being proud of it somewhat took their need to make fun of it and the power behind it, though I also understand that can't be the case for everyone
it's a bit long so i'm putting the rest under the cut dear anon xx
I really don't understand why people think x reader is cringe. Believe me when I writer character x character or x OC fic I'm also putting my personality into that character, or parts of it at least. That's what makes fanfic fun and you can't really say one is cringe and the other isn't imo, it's all fanfic.
I've only been in one terrible relationship my entire like and fanfic has helped me out tremendously so I feel you there <3
And honestly I'm so immersive when reading/consuming content that I can put myself into it immediately, so it's hard for me to imagine that other's don't. It doesn't matter to me who's pov I'm reading it from, or who it is. Maybe I'm just lucky in that aspect, but you might be right in saying that people just don't want to think of themselves directly and want to do it through a third party instead.
Experiencing fandom is truly an adventure it can go bad or good, luckily I've been experiencing good things so far with a couple of bumps! And to be fair I live in Turkey where fanfic and fandom is pretty much nonexistent, It's much more known now in the US and Europe
I agree that people shouldn't judge when they hear fanfic. It helps to understand yourself better and I can imagine some people not really liking the freedom of it.
And no worries, it made sense! I'm always happy to chat 💜
