Western Gull (Larus occidentalis)
taken in Newport Beach, California
status: least concern
Not the greatest of photos but it was a fascinating capture. Before each trip I pick a subject to sort of use to set my camera settings for the lighting I'll be dealing with during the whale watching trip (or any trip for that matter). Majority of the time these test photos don't see the light of day except for the rare occasion where it makes it to a stock photo. This day I'd chosen to test the lighting on a Western Gull that was flying around rather than the boats in the harbor. It seemed like it might be chasing a fish to catch so I wanted to see if I could catch the moment it got it. I did. Except when the gull quickly plucked the creature from the sea I thought at first glance 'oh no, its plastic that looks like a fish'. It wasn't until I sat down to go through these photos and zoomed in on it that I saw that it had actually caught a squid! Its hard to tell what species it might be from the photo as it wasn't really at optimal settings but you can make out its individual tentacles when zooming in.

We've seen a lot of people who wanted to live castles, so they built their own. These people wanted to live in a lighthouse, so they built one. Built in 1975 in Newport, Rhode Island, the 4bd, 5ba home is priced at $10.9M. The house has 4 decks with views of Newport Harbor. If you're into nautical decor, you'll love it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enter the nautical themed foyer that looks like the interior of a boat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a comfortable living room with a fireplace and large window seat.
Tumblr media
There is a kitchen counter to sit at.
Tumblr media
Beautiful kitchen with 2-tone cabinetry opens to a deck.
Tumblr media
Lovely formal dining room.
Tumblr media
Beautiful stairs to the next level.
Tumblr media
Family room in the "lighthouse" has built-in seating and a great view of the harbor. I was expecting something cute like a faux lighthouse room at the top of the tower, but this is it.
Tumblr media
There's a large deck outside the tower.
Tumblr media
Down this hall is a bump-out with a work area.
Tumblr media
A pretty guest powder room.
Tumblr media
This room also looks like a studio.
Tumblr media
The bar looks like it's made of highly polished wood just like there is on a boat.
Tumblr media
The wet bar and TV room make a lovely space to entertain.
Tumblr media
The large primary bedroom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It has a beautiful big en-suite with a double shower.
Tumblr media
This secondary bedroom is lovely.
Tumblr media
Gorgeous view from one of the decks.
Tumblr media
There's a small patio in the back of the house.
Tumblr media
And a water feature, but there isn't a pool.
Tumblr media
The home is on 1.1 acres.

I'm currently looking into Rhode Island, and it's admittedly tough to get opinions of other's thoughts and headcanons of Rhody that goes past chihuahua type behavior 🤨 so I'm wondering what headcanons you have for him? Even there ain't much!
Rhode Island headcanons and thoughts:
-is the second most densely populated state (after NJ) so he doesn't like crowds
-definitely was a pirate and/or privateer
-definitely was in the mob
-Rhodey is a sailor and fisherman at heart though--nothing better than the open sea, and a day of fishing. It's how he relaxes
-the man is a fighter: he was the last state to ratify the Constitution (and he only did so after the threat of tariffs and assurances that the Bill of Rights would be included), he was the first to have a Battle with the British, created to be home to religious dissidents etc
-In the Gilded Age, major industrialists from other NE states came to vacation in his state, centering on Newport (like implied, he, NJ and FL all don't like tourists from NY, MA, and CT, lol)
-his cooking specialty is everything to do with clams and any type of sealife
-my preferred ship for Rhodey is with Delaware (they are the other old marrieds but they aren't actually married unlike NH and Vermont who are), but I also like Rhodey/CT, Rhodey/Mass, Rhodey/NJ, Rhodey/Mary, Rhodey/Alaska, Rhodey/Hawaii as options
-Can speak Dutch, England, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and Irish thank you very much
-has the sixth-largest Dominican community in the country
-Rhodey and Jersey are buddies: they share the same state flower the violet and a hatred of the influx of tourists from NY, MA, and CT to their beaches
-Rhodey and Connecticut served on the same ships together as sailors, then privateers, then pirates
-actually has islands as part of its state: Narragansett Bay, as the wiki says, forms New England's largest estuary, which functions as an expansive natural harbor and includes a small archipelago.
-Rhode has his soft moments, but he is easily provoked

"On September 9, 1813, the United States frigate USS PRESIDENT, Commodore John Rodgers, on his way home after a cruise, when a little to the southward of Nantucket, fell in with the 5-gun British schooner HMS HIGHFLYER, tender to HMS SAN DOMINGO, 74 guns, commanded by Second Lieutenant William Hutchinson. By passing as a British frigate and sending a lieutenant dressed in a British uniform on board her, Commodore Rodgers succeeded in getting the book of private British signals and the stations of the different British men-of-war on the American coast. Taking his measures accordingly he was able, on the same day, to enter unobserved into the harbor of Newport, Rhode Island."

Skylar Preciosa Maciel, formerally Skylar Deleon, formerly John Jacobson, Jr, California inmate G56028, born 1979, incarceration intake in 2009 (this time) at age 30, sentenced to death
Murder
In 2009, a man was convicted of murdering an Arizona couple by tying them to an anchor and throwing them overboard from their yacht off Southern California was sentenced to death. Orange County Superior Court Judge Frank F. Fasel imposed the sentence recommended by the jury that convicted Skylar Deleon, 29, of killing Tom and Jackie Hawks of Prescott, Ariz. DeLeon, who appeared in a non-credited role in a "Power Rangers" TV series and starred in commercials, was also convicted in the 2003 killing of Jon Jarvi, an Anaheim man he met on a work furlough program.. "It is the judgment and order of this court you shall suffer the death penalty as to each count," Fasel said, adding that he decided to impose the penalty partly because of the horrific nature of the murders. Prosecutors said Deleon, of Long Beach, feigned interest in buying the couple's nearly half-million-dollar yacht and threw them overboard during a test cruise out of Newport Harbor in 2004. The Hawkses' bodies were never found. They said Deleon and his then-wife, Jennifer Henderson, crafted the plan to kill the Hawkses to steal their boat and savings. After the yacht killings, prosecutors said, Deleon and Henderson scrubbed the boat clean with bleach wipes. "It is difficult to imagine a case where it's more cold-blooded and calculated than this series of murders," prosecutor Matt Murphy said after the sentencing. "I can't imagine a situation that is more deserving of the ultimate punishment." Defense attorney Gary Pohlson had asked jurors to spare his client's life, arguing that Deleon was abused by a drug-dealing father who left him predisposed to violence. He declined to comment after the sentencing.
After being committed to prison, Deleon transitioned to a woman and changed the name they are known by.

Newport, Rhode Island
Rhode Island was the first road trip I ever made. I fell in love with Newport from the moment I crossed the bridge. It was about 8:30pm when we arrived and had snowed the night before.
It was freezing, but those two days were really worth it. Not for nothing, Rhode Island is called the Ocean State.
This is a photo from 2020, in the Newport Harbor. Newport is small, but you will have big fun over there.

𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 - 𝟐𝟐𝟖: 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐚 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐤
As Halloween approached in Maybee, Michigan, on October 24, 2014, residents eagerly finalized their costumes and readied their candy bowls for the anticipated festivities.
In the nearby town of Newport, a grand Halloween party was in full swing, attracting a crowd of approximately 600, most of whom were donning costumes and masks.
The atmosphere at the Halloween party was light-hearted, but unbeknownst to anybody in attendance, there was somebody there who was harboring dark intentions...
This week's episode of Morbidology takes a look at the tragic case of Chelsea Bruck. You can listen to episode 228 of Morbidology across all podcast platforms and Spotify:

Captain James Cook’s HMS Endeavour is believed to have sunk in Newport Harbor during the American Revolution.
As an historical link between Australia and the city of Newport, presenter Glenn Shorrock talks about the wreck of the Endeavour in this scene and presents what was then (1983) believed to be surviving wood from the wreck, including a small fragment that traveled to the moon on Apollo 15 (whose Command Module was also called Endeavour.)
However, as there has been some controversy in recent years about which shipwreck in Newport Harbor is actually the Endeavour, it is possible the space-flown fragment Shorrock is holding here (and another fragment flown on the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992) may have come from the wrong ship. Maybe.
Shorrock quotes an alternative story of Endeavour’s loss, saying that it instead sunk off Newport in the 1790s is, having been renamed Liberté by a French owner. This account is less-supported by the historical evidence and may instead refer to another HMS Endeavour or to another of Cook’s ships, the Resolution. However, given the coincidence of Australia II’s opponent in 1983 being named Liberty, this probably made a better story for the producers.
Certainly it must have been compelling for mid-20th-century Australian and British America’s Cup challengers to imagine their J-Classes or 12-Metres were sailing over the wreck of the Endeavour, just as it must have been for the astronauts to think they had fragments of the right ship. But until we identify its wreck for sure, perhaps imagining is all we can do…
