New research alert! In 2019, Museum researchers David Gruber and John Sparks were diving in the icy waters surrounding Greenland when they discovered that the variegated snailfish (Liparis gibbus) glows. This tiny snailfish remains the only polar fish reported to biofluoresce. Now, in a recently published study, they have uncovered something else surprising: this fish contains the highest expression of antifreeze proteins ever observed. It also sends up a red flag about how these highly specialized animals might fare in warming environmental conditions. Read more about their findings with the link in our bio! I've always stressed the significance of gut health for overall well-being. Dubbed the "second brain," its role is crucial. Recent research suggests we may have underestimated its importance. Listen to the podcast at: https://www.life-enthusiast.com/articles/podcast-475-healthy-gut/

Twice as Much Land in Developing Nations Will be Swamped by Rising Seas than Previously Projected, New Research Shows
Twice as Much Land in Developing Nations Will be Swamped by Rising Seasthan Previously Projected, New Research Shows. Rising seas will swampfarmlands, pollute water supplies and displace millions of people muchsooner than expected, scientists said last week, as they released newresearch that accurately calculates the vulnerability of coastal areas, especially in developing countries that have not…

Counting species in marine environments isn't as easy as calling out names, but researchers at MBARI are up for the challenge! Assessing biodiversity—the abundance of individuals and species—is critical for understanding an ecosystem. But in the ocean, taking stock of what lives beneath the surface presents several challenges. Now, researchers from UC Santa Barbara and MBARI have shown that drifting bits of genetic material called environmental DNA, or eDNA, can be a valuable tool for monitoring coastal ecosystems. Image: @montereybayaquarium

For almost 20 years, researchers at the Santa Barbara Coastal Long-Term Ecological Research site have conducted detailed censuses of the majestic kelp forests off Santa Barbara’s coast. But each census requires divers to conduct underwater visual surveys or to deploy and monitor special equipment. Now, eDNA can be a new tool for detecting which species live in these lush underwater forests. Learn more on our website. Image: Santa Barbara Coastal Long-Term Ecological Research (SBC LTER)

🚨#NewResearch alert! A recent study co-authored by Museum Senior Research Scientist Jackie Faherty highlights 34 “ultracool” dwarfs, also known as brown dwarfs, that were discovered by a citizen scientist from the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project. 🔭Brown dwarfs are star-like, with more mass than planets but less mass than stars, which makes them much harder to spot. The question of how often stars exist alone is an enduring question in the field of astronomy, and for brown dwarfs, the answer to this question is especially elusive. But these discoveries could help astronomers determine if brown dwarfs are more akin to oversized planets or undersized stars, as well as providing insights into how star systems evolve over time. New Research Shows That Women’s Eggs Prefer Some Men’s Sperm Over Others
According to a new study, a woman’s eggs may be selective towards sperm cells and prefer some over the others.
Tumblr media
The study carried out by Stockholm University, in partnership with the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) looked into the chemicals used by a female egg to attract male sperm and results show that a woman’s eggs may prefer sperm cells of some men to others. ‘Human eggs release chemicals called chemoattractants that attract sperm to unfertilized eggs. We wanted to know if eggs use these chemical signals to pick which sperm they attract,’ said John Fitzpatrick, an associate professor at Stockholm University. The study specifically looked at follicular fluid, which surrounds the eggs and contains the chemicals that attract sperm. The study checked if the fluids from different women attracted certain sperm more than others and the result showed it does. The research team obtained anonymous egg and sperm samples from couples undergoing IVF at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester. ‘Follicular fluid from one female was better at attracting sperm from one male, while follicular fluid from another female was better at attracting sperm from a different male,’ said Professor Fitzpatrick. ‘This shows that interactions between human eggs and sperm depend on the specific identity of the women and men involved.’ It seems that even if a woman has chosen a partner to mate with, it’s not a must her egg and his sperm will attract each other according to the study. According to Professor Fitzpatrick, sperm have only one job which is to fertilise the eggs. So they won’t be choosy about which egg they fertilise. The study suggests that eggs have evolved and now pick high quality or genetically compatible sperm. “The idea that eggs are choosing sperm is really novel in human fertility’ said Professor Daniel Brison, the scientific director of the Department of Reproductive Medicine at Saint Mary’s. ‘Research on the way eggs and sperm interact will advance fertility treatments and may eventually help us understand some of the currently ‘unexplained’ causes of infertility in couples.’ Read the full article
