Somehow getting dragged along on a cryptid hunt in Michigan was the exact sort of holiday Hermann Gottlieb needed, per one Newton Geiszler.

Drafted yet another au fic while my student’s did their freewriting today; someone please exorcise these scientists from my mind already.

"How much longer do you plan on just sitting here?" "Patience, my man," Newton murmured, too busy squinting through his binoculars to answer properly. Hermann rolled his eyes in irritation, once more rubbing his hands together in a futile attempt to try to summon some more warmth. The damnable heat inserts for his gloves had ceased working what felt an eternity ago, despite having been obtained after the recommendation of an accomplished mountaineer. "Not to disparage your hopes, but I highly doubt we're going to find anything." At this, Newton lowered the binoculars just enough to glance Hermann's way, a smirk tugging at his lips and a finger pointing accusingly towards Hermann. "Not with that kind of attitude."

Hermann huffed, perhaps a bit melodramatically, turning his own attention to the distant shoreline, too far for his naked eye to determine any differences between tree and shrub. Had you told him four months ago that the Hermann Gottlieb- cynic, skeptic, man of logic and reason and fact- would willingly be cramped into a tiny boat in the middle of a Michigan lake during a bitterly cold spring day trying to spot a bloody Bigfoot with his on-again, off-again worst enemy- Well, frankly, he would have laughed at you.

And yet that was exactly what he was doing, much to his bafflement."I still cannot understand why you insisted we waste our entire weekend on this. Or, why I agreed for that matter." He couldn't be certain without looking, but he would swear Newton was laughing to himself. "Bragging rights maybe? I dunno dude, but if you're right, I'll let you hold it against me for... Four weeks? ...Maybe five." Hm. That was tempting. Unfortunately, most points of contention that he had taken against the man had- Well, Newton may be a hurricane of restless energy and too little caution, but he was often correct. But the existence of an alleged cryptid? That was pure nonsense. Aliens, however- unlike all the bloody ghouls and gremlins and gargantuan tall tales Newton obsessed over- Aliens could exist. The Universe was, after all, such a vast Unknown. And that didn't even account for the dimensions beyond the- "And you needed a break. I know your dad's been driving you nuts." Hermann's thoughts cut short, attention fully stolen by the man to his right. Newton was still staring at the distant shore, seemingly unshaken by the revelation. He had spoken so casually, was so unflinchingly blunt, yet Hermann was left careening into a tailspin. It was that- That bloody glimpse of sentiment this ridiculous man seemed prone to dropping unexpectedly. Simple observations and gestures of instinctual care that revealed just how much of himself was Known. Newton had been doing it more and more often lately; he read Hermann so well sometimes that he was beginning to fear that the confounded man had somehow perfected telepathy with all the scrap metal he kept in the basement. And what was more alarming- The observation was completely true. Lars had been pressuring him, insisting- demanding- that Hermann return to Germany this summer, to finally- Well, it didn't matter. That wasn't the life Hermann wanted, never truly had. And despite knowing his own feelings on the matter, he decided to take the opportunity confide in Newton, who- apart from Vanessa- truly did know Hermann best. "He is adamant that I return home. Wants me to take my proper place in the family." For the first time in the past half-hour, Newton properly lowered his binoculars, turning to Hermann with a baleful look. He studied him for a moment- an excruciating moment where the usual rambunctiousness was cast aside in favor of steely observation- before his eyes narrowed. "I love you man, so please don't take this the wrong way, but fuck that guy." Hermann was startled into a bark of laughter; the vitriol in Newton's voice, the anger on Hermann's behalf- It was a rare moment of finding true common ground, especially in a relationship as convoluted and complex as theirs. And Newton making threats was- It brought to mind the few kittens he had kept as a child, full of spite and such a blatant disregard for one’s own smallness that they truly believed they could intimidate. The image only made his laughter peal slightly louder, ridiculous and improper as it was. Newton, for his part, seemed completely perplexed by Hermann's reaction, features pushing and pulling as if unsure what to do with themselves, before finally settling into something like a warm smile, eyes narrowed slightly in fond bemusement, unable to completely resist laughing along. "It really wasn't meant to be funny, but it's good to hear you laughin' again." Hermann finally caught control of himself, waving off the comment. "No, no. I-" He snickered again, before turning with a grin. "You gave voice to my exact sentiments. 'Fuck that guy,' indeed." "So..." Newton trailed off, frowning as he tried to work something out, his next words coming out a little unsure, a midge timid. "You're not going back to gut alt Deutschland then?" Hermann winced at the pronunciation, but shook his head in confirmation. "Not for some time, at least. I-" He frowned, unsure if he should reveal too much of the matter, but this was Newton after all. If he couldn't confide in- well- then who could he ever trust? "I've grown quite fond of the people I've met here and the life I’ve built. I can't imagine cutting that short for Lars. No matter what his beliefs may be regarding my alleged ‘responsibility.’" Newton was offering some sort of awed and adoring look, still tempered by warm amusement. "Wow, I've been a bad influence on you. This is- I'm still talking to Hermann right?" "Sod off," Hermann tried not to chuckle at Newton's light teasing. "I'm the same as I've always been, you menace." "I mean, you've always had the potential Herms; no one's arguing that. Trust me; I know it's always been there. Just...” Newton’s head tilted slightly, eyebrows furrowing once more, his every thought once again clearly carved across his features. Hermann was grateful for it, some days. Some days, he almost envied it. Newton finally found his traction once again, expression softening and words taking on a tone akin to relieved. “ You didn’t used to be so.." He gestured emphatically at Hermann's whole self, ending with a rather dramatic shrug. "...obvious about it. Looks good on you."

Hermann hummed in a detached sense of agreement. He had become more... outgoing in recent weeks. Perhaps being surrounded by so many people who were unapologetically themselves was beginning to influence him.

Some small part of him- one that was still desperate for his father's approval, one that still preferred standing away from the crowd, one that preferred taking up as small and insignificant a space as possible until he was needed- was appalled at the revelation. Appalled by his behavior, appalled by his vocality, appalled especially in the liberties he had even begun taking with his wardrobe. The Hermann who had arrived Stateside nine months ago as a guest lecturer in an American university was leagues away from the Hermann freezing his arse off in a rented pontoon boat sharing drugstore coffee with the man who quite literally embodied the phrase "chaos incarnate." He found he much preferred the newer model.

The Professors meet while Newt studies Extradimensional Pokemon and Hermann studies Extraterrestrial Pokemon. I have more ideas about how steel can’t be poisoned and other Pokemon they have, including eventual shared custody of a laboratory Rotom.

Would love to request Newt and Hermann dressed to impress in formalwear. Fancy up them boys!

They'd clean up so nice! Maybe they're going to an awards ceremony for BVR? Or maybe they have a gala in honor of them saving the world where they along with Mako, Raleigh, Tendo, and Herc are the guests of honor? Whatever the occasion I can't see them wearing "regular" tuxedos or one color fancy suits, there'd be some element of uniqueness. That being said, I thought Newt would wear a fancier version of a leather jacket, vest, nice pants, and boots; and Hermann would go the fancy professor look with a sort of nice checkered (not sure if that's what you'd call this pattern) suit and bow tie.

Newt, on his second tube of exorbitantly priced Extra Strength Results Guaranteed hair gel sometime in the earlier years of Shatterdome cohabitation with Hermann, having failed at his original goal of actually slicking down his hair as the dress code for the funding gala he and Hermann are attending in half an hour would require, but having succeeded magnificently in gelling his hair into incredibly stiff spikes of hair at a 75° angle instead of its usual 90° angle, conceding to the formal dress requirements in any other way by wearing his cleanest white button up and a pair of unripped black jeans: well shit. Also fuck. Yeah I think that sums up the situation.

Hermann, stepping through the door in an incredibly outdated suit cobbled together from thrift store finds, hand me downs, and though he would rather die than admit it to Newton, some pieces from Grandpa Gottlieb’s closet, well aware of how he looks: Newton, I’m ready to go if you are, and if you have anything to say just know that I am more than willing to hit you in the shins with my cane- oh. Oh dear

Newt, turning and seeing Hermann, immediately feeling better: holy SHIT dude you look like a spirit Halloween costume of a stodgy professor

Hermann, not rising to the bait due to his excellent manners and iron self control and certainly not the fact that he’s not sure what a Spirit Halloween is: well at least I don’t look like a low budget Naruto parody anime

Newt, finally getting himself under control after a three minute fit of laughter on the ground fueled by stress and caffeine, by the end of which he was only able to point at Hermann and squeak out ‘NARUto’ between hysterics: oh man. we are getting ZERO funding.

Hermann, shifting his feet into the most stable position he can manage and leaning on his cane as he offers Newt his hand up and then fixing his collar, the act of which happens to elicit an emotion that Newt will firmly refuse to interrogate for at least six months after this: Well. At least we’ll look as precisely in need of it as we are.

I love you, Hannibal Chau's golden shoe. I love you, unhinged, awesome, brilliant, despite-all-odds still alive pacrim fandom. I wish you all a happy 10th anniversary.

This movie changed my brain chemistry forever. I can watch it all over and over again, and never get bored. I can make up countless AUs and read hundreds of awesome fics. I can read my comics and laugh at the little silly nuances. I can recite the dialogues from memory. I feel awesome. I feel old. I feel like celebrating.

Day 1 - How did you first get into Torchwood?

fdhkf ok ok so basically. i do not remember exactly what happened. this happens to me often like i can never remember what i came across that first got me into the media. with torchwood i at least know it was the fact that everyone was bi, but i dont rmr if i saw a post about it, or if i was fucking around on tvtropes or something - i legit cannot remember. i remember seeing a gifset of gay torchwood kisses p early on, but i dont think that was like the inciting incident? that mighta come about when i was doing research into the alleged fruitiness FHSJDFKDS. i do know i've been aware of jack as a character for at least a decade, like i'd heard of the harkness test + i was aware that he was 'that slutty doctor who guy', and also, coincidentally, in the fandom i was in in 2015, someone wrote a crossover fic where my fav slept with jack and ianto and i read it 😭 had no idea who they were, i hopefully at least googled them but fhsdjkf. but anyway i was like 'ooh a show with an all bisexual cast? color me intrigued.' i'd never touched dw either, i had friends who liked it when i was in middle school but i always saw it as kinda dorky fhsdkj (namely cuz my friends were dorks), but yeah, i was reeled in by the concept of sci-fi bisexuals. but not fully! it was in like 'yeah ill put that on my watchlist and get around to it in 2 yrs' territory

but then, as im looking into it, i realize owen's played by burn gorman, who i only knew from pac rim, which i'd fixated on briefly in 2018, riiiight before pru came out. my pr fixation p much revolved entirely around newt; i liked newmann, but i didn't get super into it. hermann himself was kind of an afterthought, i wasn't big on him at the time. anyway i saw owen and recognized hermann's actor, and my initial reaction was like "WHAT DO U MEAN HERMANN FUCKING GOTTLIEB'S IN THE SLUTTY BISEXUAL SHOW??? THIS I MUST SEE! HERMANN GOTTLIEB KISS MEN REAL NOT CLICKBAIT?!?!?!!??" and that was literally the thing that made me watch it. LAWL and the first few eps were so damn jarring bc i continued to just associate owen with hermann initially. and worse yet, ive now developed a hefty crush on burn himself lmao, i think he's gorg and ive watched a lot of his stuff, but before i got into torchwood i only knew him from PR and i didnt find hermann attractive or even rlly compelling in the slightest (this has changed significantly; im in my hermann era as a pr fan. newt who). so it was also a lot of "WTF WHY IS HE HOT??? HUH???? DUDE NO WAY." it's since lost its novelty, but it was very jarring + amusing to me at first, trying to reconcile owen n hermann. its like if u ran into ur frumpy weird professor at leather night and he was the twink of ur dreams FDSKJFHDSKJFDSK

yeah so then i watched the show and it fucking smacked me over the head with a shovel bc its so fucking bad but its so fucking good. and very quickly my view of owen went from "wait a mf second why is not-hermann kind of 🫦 hiii mean slutty hermann hiii" to "wait. oh hes fucked up. oh hes sad. oh no i love him" to him being my third favorite character of all time. fff. but more on that tomorrow! hehehehe

As per our text convo, what if Newt’s type (“bitchy men”) stemmed from an old MIT professor who happens to looks a LOT like Hermann?

as always, this fic got away from me, so I posted it to AO3!!!! here's a sneak peek....

“My,” Hermann says. “Don’t we look smart.”

He catches Newton’s eye in the mirror, and Newton gives him a rather embarrassed sort of smile, one hand pausing mid-air as he lifts a razor to his jaw. He’s shaved the left half already—it’s bare of shaving cream and smooth to the touch as Hermann presses himself to Newton’s back and his cheek against Newton’s own. “Did you comb your hair?” Hermann continues. It’s laying flat against his head for once, not an ounce of hair product to be seen. And he smells almost overpoweringly like cologne. Newton has never worn cologne in his life.

“Um,” Newton says. “Maybe.”

Newton did not even comb his hair for their marriage ceremony. Granted, of course, it had been a rather quick and uneventful affair, and they’d argued the entire drive there and through most of the signing of papers and whatnot, but they’d at least made an effort to look nice at the time. No, no comb, no cologne, and certainly no fresh shave for the soon to be Dr. Newton Geiszler-Gottlieb that day. He has recycled the suit, however, seeing as it’s the single nice article of clothing he owns that has not fallen victim to laboratory accidents, deep-set xenobiological stains, or flames. This happens to a not-insignificant amount of Newton’s clothing. Hermann tugs on the bow tie now. “Very smart,” he says. “I should almost think I’m underdressed.” Hermann is wearing his best tweed blazer with one of his better-fitting pairs of slacks, though he has chosen a sweatervest that’s not missing any buttons. He privately considers it his dressy sweatervest. Newton does not know this, because he would almost certainly react to the information with far too much glee. "I thought you said it wasn’t a very formal affair?”

Old faculty reunion, Newton had told him a few months ago, rather quickly and nervously. It’s no big deal. They don’t want me to speak or anything, just show up so they can show me off, or I guess us off, trophy nerds, dude, that's us, you totally don’t have to come but— “It’s not,” Newton says. “I just want to make a good, um, impression. I haven’t been back in a while, you know?” He fumbles his razor and it clatters in the sink. “Oops.”
