So the NFLPA released report cards for each team's working conditions that graded them based on polls from players, which I found pretty interesting but also a little depressing. You can read it here: NFL Player Team Report Cards | NFLPA
More thoughts under the cut since I was initially going to put my thoughts in the tags but I thought reading it was quite eye-opening.
The Bengals being graded an F- for nutrition... I'm not that surprised considering what former players have said about the cafeteria, but it's still pretty embarrassing. And those comments were from the 2000s. Not providing dinner, vitamins, or supplements to players is a little questionable, especially if players are going to be spending long days at practice. And the fact that they’ve had breastfeeding mothers sit on the floor of public restrooms to take care of their kids is… concerning. (This is a Mike Brown moment. Unfortunately. The “no indoor practice facility” jokes looking more and more true by the moment. Like I get he’s pretty poor for an NFL owner but your team made the Super Bowl two seasons ago invest in the facilities more have an actual food service on hand cmon man why are you proving Carson Palmer right)
I wasn't surprised looking at the Falcons' grading of their strength coach (by and large, strength coaches were graded exceedingly positively by the players, except for the Falcons and the Ravens. In the case of the Ravens it appeared that they had a strength and conditioning coach who was pretty disliked by the players, and that coach did get fired, so at least the team's aware of it), mostly bc the Falcons aren't very good at tackling 😭 hopefully they make a change in that regard because man. At least they think Arthur Blank is ok.
Haven't watched mid-season Hard Knocks so didn't really have an idea of how the Cardinals' facilities were, but... wow. Overall second to last behind the Commanders (who are, y'know, dysfunctional), which kinda surprised me but at the same time the Cardinals are kind of low-key dysfunctional now I think about that. Making players pay for dinner out of their payroll... don't like that! Oh yeah and their training facilities are apparently a health and safety risk (fun).
It is interesting to note that the rankings of the facilities didn't necessarily correlate with team success: the top-ranked teams in this survey were the Vikings, Dolphins, Raiders, Texans, and Cowboys while the bottom-5 teams were the Commanders, Cardinals, Chargers, Chiefs, and Jaguars (Bengals dodging this phew). This is probably because a lot of stuff that's surveyed here can impact team performance, but only if it's egregiously bad (ie Cardinals or Commanders). Was surprised by how the Chiefs graded out on their training staff considering they just won a Super Bowl but I would wager that's to do with Andy Reid and his whole system; works but isn't the nicest about it.
I thought that the way some categories were weighted were a little questionable, ie travel and treatment of families being abt the same level. Personally having younger players room with each other is whatever, not having a proper space for families is a bigger issue. But maybe that's me being unsympathetic (and there is the whole difference between a star player and practice squad guy to consider because their treatment would be different).
Overall, pretty good survey, I do hope it's able to enact some awareness bc the NLFPA isn't that strong, but they do seem to be doing their best as a union (working in the interest of players).

Calls for NFL Reforms Grow After Damar Hamlin Suffers Cardiac Arrest During Game
Chris Walker January 3, 2023
Tumblr media
Damar Hamlin, a 24-year-old safety in his second season with the Buffalo Bills, is in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest during a Monday night game with the Cincinnati Bengals.
After tackling wide receiver Tee Higgins, Hamlin took two steps and collapsed backward. Medical personnel immediately rushed to his side, administering CPR and giving him oxygen as he lay motionless on the ground. Hamlin was then strapped to a stretcher and carted off the field in an ambulance.
Commentators were at a loss for words, and went to commercial break several times during the 10 to 15 minutes that Hamlin received medical attention. Several players from both teams were visibly upset, with many crying and praying on the field as medical care was being administered.
It appears that players were initially told they would have five minutes in the locker room before resuming the game, but after coaches from both teams conferred with officials, it was agreed that the game should be suspended indefinitely. About an hour later, the NFL announced that the game would be postponed.
NFL vice president of football operations Troy Vincent disputed the claim that play was going to resume five minutes after Hamlin was driven off the field, even though it appeared on screen that players had been told to warm up after Hamlin was carted away, with Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow throwing footballs to his teammates during that time.
“Neither coach was talking about resuming play, the players were not thinking of resuming play,” Vincent said. “How do you resume play after seeing such a traumatic event?”
A statement from the Bills on Tuesday morning said that Hamlin’s heart had stopped but was restored by medical professionals on the field. He is now sedated and in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Jordan Rooney, Hamlin’s friend and marketing representative, tweeted earlier in the evening that Hamlin’s vitals had returned “to normal.”
Teams and players tweeted well wishes for Hamlin and expressed shock at the incident.
Many commentators urged the NFL to consider reforms in the wake of Hamlin’s injury and other worrisome injuries that took place earlier this season.
After explaining a number of scenarios that could have led to Hamlin collapsing on the field, ER physician and social media personality Jeremy Faust said that changes to the sport needed to be discussed. “The worst fears are being confronted, and this must trigger reform,” he said.
Some social media users, including political columnist Skip Bayless, questioned how the game could be resumed this late in the season. Nina Turner, a progressive former Ohio state lawmaker, condemned Bayless’s tweet, suggesting that it showcased the way sports leagues exploit athletes, particularly players of color.
“This goes to show how some dehumanize professional athletes, especially Black athletes,” Turner wrote on Twitter. “These athletes are people with families. They are people, not bodies meant for entertainment.”
In an op-ed for Truthout in October, journalist Harvey Wasserman, who once played football as a wide receiver, pointed to other serious injuries this season, arguing that changes to the sport were desperately needed. When Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa collapsed on the field earlier in the season after sustaining a hard hit to his head, for example, the team initially told the public he had undergone a “back injury.” Tagovailoa was allowed to play the following week, only to sustain yet another head injury.
While quarterbacks are especially in need of protection, players in all positions are at risk of severe injury, Wasserman noted.
“For all the focus on rules surrounding quarterbacks, the essence of the game at all positions remains embedded in its violence, with the expectation of injury being virtually universal,” he wrote.
Replacing tackling with the use of flags “may be the game’s only hope,” he went on, adding:
The violence lovers will whine that the sport is going “wimpy.” But in the long term, the whole game must be overhauled and made less brutal. The grotesque parade of seriously harmed young stars being carted off the field is not sustainable.
The reality is this…

NFL player Damar Hamlin, a safety for the Buffalo Bills, collapsed mid-game on Monday night—during the first quarter of a match against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin remains hospitalized in critical condition, following apparent cardiac arrest, according to a statement posted across the Buffalo Bills’ official team social media accounts.
Yet within hours of the football player falling unconscious and crumpling on the field, anti-vax conspiracy theorists seized the opportunity to spread disinformation on the internet. Numerous tweets insinuating (or outright blaming) the covid-19 vaccine for Hamlin’s collapse popped up in the incident’s aftermath, as first reported by the Washington Post.
“Everybody knows what happened to Damar Hamlin because it’s happened to too many athletes around the world since COVID vaccination was required in sports,” former Newsmax and OANN corespondent, Emerald Robinson, tweeted. She has nearly 500,000 followers on the platform, and her post has been viewed more than 2.3 million times.
Charlie Kirk, noted disinformation disseminator and Turning Point USA founder, stoked the fire of the same conspiracy theory, tweeting “This is a tragic and all too familiar sight right now: Athletes dropping suddenly.” Kirk has nearly 2 million followers and his post has been seen more than 11.7 million times.
Business mogul and prominent anti-vaxxer, Grant Cardone, also quickly joined in on the unscientific theorizing. He tweeted, “Do you think the medical society should investigate THE VACCINE as responsible for sudden deaths like tonight’s Damar Hamlin collapse? #SuddenDeath,” in a post that’s been viewed more than 3.4 million times. Note: Damar Hamlin is not dead, and his condition is reportedly improving.
Then, the conspiracy got even more exposure on Tuesday night when Tucker Carlson took to cable television to call medical experts and other media outlets “witch doctors,” and promote vaccine skepticism. His argument: “We can’t say it was the shot. We can’t say it wasn’t the shot. We don’t whether he got the shot.”
But here’s the thing: We do know that the risk of heart inflammation and other cardiac problems is significantly higher with coronavirus infection itself, than from the vaccine. Myocarditis, or heart inflammation, is a documented, rare side effect of the vaccine. In one study of 43 million people, just 617 experienced myocarditis within 28 days of receiving a vaccine. And people, both unvaccinated and vaccinated, were about 10 times more likely to end up with myocarditis immediately following a positive covid test than following vaccination. Another 2022 study determined covid infection increased myocarditis risk by seven fold more than covid vaccination.
Because vaccines still do so much to reduce the risk and severity of infections, even against newer variants, the covid-19 vaccine actually protects heart health. The most recent, fast-spreading variants do seem to evade vaccine immunity better than past viral strains. However, vaccinated people are still significantly less likely than unvaccinated people to be infected or become seriously ill with covid-19—and are thus less likely to end up with myocarditis.
Conversely, sudden cardiac arrest in athletes is a well-documented, tragic phenomenon that predates the covid-19 pandemic. Sudden cardiac death is “the most frequent medical cause of sudden death in athletes,” said one 2016 medical study. Other studies, at least one more than 25 years old, illustrate the particular risk of “commotio cordis,” a term for blunt force trauma to the chest and subsequent sudden cardiac arrest and death. Though the condition is rare overall, it’s considerably more common among athletes, Christopher Madias, a physician and researcher at Tufts Medical Center, told NPR.
Right before his collapse, Hamlin sustained a hard hit to the torso during a tackle. With commotio cordis, such blows trigger the heart’s electrical signals to misfire and lead the organ to stop suddenly. It has happened to professional athletes before. For instance, hockey player Chris Pronger, who went down during a 1998 NHL game. Pronger recovered and played in the league for 13 more years.
Amid the muddle of vaccine conspiracies, multiple doctors and other medical experts have taken to Twitter and media outlets to explain this much more feasible theory. Yet, these posts appear to have a fraction of the views and engagement as the anti-vax content.

The off-season has been pretty cool so far and I have a lot of thoughts about it, so...
Ranking Dolphins off-season additions
S Tier
Vic Fangio - Defensive Coordinator
Tumblr media
One of the best defensive minds in football and The Godfather of the modern day NFL defense. I mean that literally because I am 90% sure this man is secretly an Italian crime lord or something. He deadass even has an heirloom secret meatball recipe.
Jalen Ramsey - Cornerback
Tumblr media
Stud cornerback who gives major bottom energy playing across from Daddy Xavien? Nuff said.
A Tier
Braxton Berrios - Wide Receiver
Tumblr media
One of several strays we rescued from the Jets. Poor thing's been traumatized by shitty QB play. Fits the classic white slot receiver archetype that every team needs. Bonus points for being a dynamic return man. It's giving Wes Welker, but he fast boi now.
David Long Jr - Linebacker
Tumblr media
True middle linebacker who hasn't been able to stay on the field for very LONG. Get it? Cause he has injury concerns? ...I'll see myself out.
B Tier
Mike White - Quarterback
Tumblr media
King of having the most generic, white-ass name known to man. Best known for being HIM to the Jets fanbases for like 1 and a half games each season before the crushing reality of being the Jets comes back to bite them in the ass. Decent backup. Probably scored bonus points for having the same name as the Head Coach.
Eric Saubert - Tight End
Stopgap TE who actually knows how to block, so already better than Mike Gesicki. This man is a Durham Smythe clone except slightly faster. You can't fool me. I am familiar with your game.
Malik Reed - Outside Linebacker
Tumblr media
Big man rush quarterback and make it easier for other big men to rush quarterback. Had a lot of previous success under Big Dick Vic in Denver across from Bradley Chubb. Gives me a chub just thinking about it.
Chosen Anderson - Wide Receiver
Tumblr media
Best known for having the most, well... unique wicks known to man, and for being a moderate locker room cancer. A true Florida man. Whether I mean that in a good way or a bad way is up to interpretation. Low risk, high reward signing. Somewhere in a dark room Mike McDaniel is currently pushing his glasses up his nose and cackling at the idea of having 3 sub 4.4 40 WRs at his disposal.
C Tier
DeShon Elliott - Safety
Tumblr media
Best known for making himself public enemy number one to the Dolphins fanbase before he'd even been on the team for a month by being out of pocket about the quarterback position. Better watch those Twitter fingers, bucko. We take mutiny very serious here. Solid player otherwise who will bolster a burgeoning secondary. Would be in B Tier if he wasn't a Twitter antagonist.
Dan Feeney - Center
Tumblr media
Great leader. Great locker room guy. Great mullet. Mid to dog water player. Decent backup center all things considered. He's like the Ryan Fitzpatrick of centers except Fitzy was actually good half the time. Dan Feeney is giving more Fitzception than Fitzmagic.
Kendall Lamb - Offensive Tackle
The most mid of mid tier swing tackles... Which is disturbing because he is currently RT1... Which is disturbing because we have the only left handed quarterback in the NFL and that's his blindside. To this day I have no idea how that concept keeps escaping this team's front office, but you know, whatever. Mediocre right tackles go brrr!!
Dog water
Butch Barry - OLine Coach
Tumblr media
Besides looking like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, this man is best known for being a part of the shit show that was Denver last year. Coached an OLine that hated him and was fired mid-season so... Love that for us.
Best addition of the off-season so far?
Vic Fangio by a country fucking mile.
This is a multifaceted signing with a plethora of advantages. Daddy Vic is a defensive genius. We know he's gonna get the defense right, but in all reality, just his presence will help our offense improve as well.
The one defense Tua has historically had the most trouble with in his career is the Fangio defense. As a rookie he faced him in Denver and had a very rough game. Just this past year he had his worst game against the Chargers and Brandon Staley who is a Fangio disciple.
It makes sense because up until now, he'd only been able to face our previous defense in practice, which relied heavily on man coverage and all-out blitz looks. Fangio's defense is the opposite. He prefers to only send four pass rushers and disguise his looks in the secondary by playing heavy zone coverage and rotating in and out of different looks at the snap forcing the quarterback to methodically read the defense in real time, take his check downs, and slowly march down the field. Accordingly, Tua's been very good against man heavy teams, but has struggled at times against zone heavy teams.
Well, now the man who's defense he's had the most trouble with is in that building. He'll be seeing those looks for months in practice and getting countless reps against it. Fangio can even advise him on the best ways to play his scheme.
11 teams in the NFL run the Fangio defense. That's a third of the league and our offense is about to get the cheat codes directly from the horse's mouth.
But maybe the best thing about Grandpappy Vic is that he's a grizzled old veteran who was a former Head Coach, and when you have a young little cinnamon roll of a Head Coach in Mike McDaniel it is such an advantage to have a seasoned former Head Coach there to advise him and mentor him.
I love Mike McDaniel, but he had his coaching struggles last year. He challenged more plays than any other Head Coach and only won one challenge the entire season. He's struggled immensely with getting the plays in on time to the point where it might have cost us a playoff win. Subbing in different players and personnel packages was a major logistical issue at times. And on top of all of this to keep track of, he's also the offensive playcaller.
It's a lot to do, and he's still pretty green in some areas. So to have a guy like Vic Fangio there with all his wealth of experience and wisdom for Mike to consult with during important moments is huge. He can also completely govern the defense and take that off his plate as well.
What I wouldn't give to sit in a room with Mike McDaniel and Vic Fangio and just listen to them talk football. An offensive genius and a defensive genius just bouncing shit off of each other.
The moment he signed, Vic Fangio instantly made everyone from the defense, to the offense, to the Head Coach better. Incredible signing. Best signing of the entire NFL off-season imo.
Worst addition?
Butch Barry.
Y'all... Mike Munchak was right there! And the best they could do was this Dobby looking ass motherfucker?
Considering they actually refuse to bring in a legitimate blindside tackle and have a bunch of young guys and journeymen competing there, you'd think they'd actually bring in a legitimate OLine coach to teach them and not one that was tarred and feathered and run out of Denver with a bunch of pitch forks. I mean for fucks sake, they practically threw a party over there when this guy was fired. Hopefully he proves me wrong, but it's not looking good in my eyes.
Four years into Tua's career and he's yet to have an offensive line that wasn't bottom 5 in pass protection. I mean, he's only had serious issues with injuries and now concussions in his career, and our entire season only hinges on him staying healthy and being there to lead this team. In what world would he need a proper blindside tackle? That's ludicrous.
Someone pray for my mans, bruh.

Falcons Draft Rumors Explode After Shocking Owner's Meeting Revelation!
Tumblr media
A big topic amongst Falcons fans has been whether or not Atlanta will draft a quarterback. This is something that Terry Fono spoke about at the NFL owners meeting not too long ago. So, I want to talk about some quarterback targets for the Falcons in the draft if they go down that path. Now, let's go back in time for a moment to when Terry Fono spoke to the media not long ago on adding a quarterback. He said, 'We're definitely going to add a quarterback. We're not going into the season with two arms.' That quote right there got chopped off, and the second half of it, which I'm about to share with you guys, is very important. But when you just look at the front half of it, people have taken that and ran with 'Atlanta's drafting a quarterback'. Summary: The Atlanta Falcons are facing a pivotal decision regarding their quarterback situation, following revelations made by Terry Fono at the NFL owners meeting. Speculation is rife as fans debate whether the team will draft a quarterback or focus on supporting Kirk Cousins. With uncertainty surrounding Cousins' health, the pressure is on for the Falcons to make the right choice. I'm not convinced. Here's the full quote: 'We're going to definitely add a quarterback. We're not going to go into the season with two arms.' But it could be the draft, it could be before or after the draft, and we'll be open-minded about how we go through that. So, I think the last part is very important, that maybe before the draft or after the draft in free agency. And I fully expect Atlanta to have three quarterbacks on the roster because every team in the NFL has at least three, sometimes four, quarterbacks going into OTAs and minicamp. Just to help facilitate the drills when you've got 90 guys on their roster. Especially with Kirk Cousins coming back from an Achilles injury, he likely won't be ready to roll for the first day of training camp. So yeah, Atlanta's going to add a quarterback. It may be as low level of a UDFA signing, it could be a draft pick, it could be free agency. But don't look at that initial quote and go 'it's a done deal, the Falcons are drafting a quarterback'. I am more confident that the Falcons will not draft a quarterback in round one or round two than I am about them drafting Dallas Turner. And I've already deemed him a Falcon, his wings are growing right now. So there will not be a quarterback selection for the Falcons in round one or round two, and there better not be. Not because there's bad quarterbacks in this draft class, not because I don't like the idea of taking a quarterback. In fact, I think me from like a few months ago would slap myself silly currently. But the reality is, Kirk Cousins signed a 4-year $180 million contract, but the guaranteed money is the number I want you to remember right now. $100 million guaranteed through the next three seasons: 2024, 2025, 2026. Atlanta has hitched their wagon to Kirk Cousins to the tune of $100 million. If you spent $100 million on a home and then you went to like Target, wouldn't you want to buy things to help accessorize the home, not go buy a smaller home? Day two picks should be 100% devoted to supporting Kirk Cousins. There's only one position on the roster that does not make Kirk Cousins a better quarterback: it's the backup quarterback position. If he was younger in his career, yeah, he could probably benefit from having another mind to help him during film prepping during the week. The guy is 35 years old. No 23 or 24-year-old rookie is going to hop into a quarterback room meeting with him and go 'Kirk, I don't know if you noticed this but the defense, they're lining up with two safeties. Do you know what that means?' Kirk's going to look at him like 'get out of here'. So no, there is only one spot that does not improve the Atlanta Falcons or specifically Kirk Cousins, and it's the backup QB spot. So round one, round two, round three picks should all be devoted to investing in your $100 million quarterback, whether that is wide receivers, defense, so that Kirk Cousins can put up 30 points and not lose 31-30. Pass rusher, cornerback, literally any position but the backup quarterback position will improve Kirk Cousins in Atlanta, I am convinced of that. So go support him. Now, does not mean the Falcons will not draft a quarterback later on towards day three. And we all know that rounds six and five and sometimes even a little bit of four, they are, you know, shots in the dark here. So what I want to do next is look at Mel Kiper quarterback rankings. Because despite how passionate I am that the Falcons should not go quarterback in rounds 1 through three, that does not rule out the possibility of them going quarterback in round four, five, maybe six. Because it is a valuable position where you want to have a good backup plan in place in case Kirk Cousins does get injured. But I still maintain the belief of you should spend your top three rounds investing in supporting Kirk and getting good assets around him. So what I have here is Mel Kiper quarterback rankings. You see all the names on the left: Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels, Drake Mann, just cross them all off. They are not happening. No JJ McCarthy, no Michael Penix, no Bo Nix. I expect all six of those guys to go in the first two rounds of the draft. Maybe Penix sneaks into round three, but I still don't think Atlanta would go Penix in that spot. So that leaves you with Spencer Rattler, Michael Pratt, Kaden Slovis, Jordan Travis. And then here are five other quarterbacks that Mel Kiper did not have in his top 10: Joe Milton, Devin Ly, Sam Hartman. Oh, Sam Hartman's actually at Notre Dame now, sorry about that, silly me. Austin Reed and TOA Tug ioa. So there are, I would say, 10 quarterbacks that are in play potentially for Atlanta in rounds 4 through 7, day three of the NFL draft, because I don't see them going in the top three rounds. And I don't think any of the guys that we looked at in the top six are going to sneak into the third day of the draft. So with that all in mind, let's kind of reset our sights and check out who could be a realistic quarterback target for rounds four, five, six, or seven, where if Atlanta does decide to go QB, this would be a more appropriate option. Spencer Rattler, I don't think is a lock for the first two days of the draft. Neither is Michael Pratt, Slovis, Jordan Travis, Joe Milton, Devin Ly, Notre Dame Sam Hartman. Sorry about that again. Austin Reed, TOA Tug ioa. These are all guys that are going to go, in my eyes, from rounds 4 through 7. Some UDFA priorities, maybe Rattler sneaks into round three, but I think there's a chance he might go to round four because there are some concerns about his antics off the field. So we're going to look at, of those nine guys that Atlanta could be targeting, who makes the most sense for the Falcons? But first, speaking of Kirk Cousins, if you want to get a brand new Kirk Cousins Jersey, go to chatsports.com/cousins and use that link to get yourself an awesome new Falcons jersey. COWBOYS MOCK DRAFT Simulating the right fit Plenty of new faces enter to replace all the talent lost to free agency It’s draft season and time for our traditional NFL draft seven-round simulation, making every pick for the Cowboys. This year, we used Pro Football Network’s draft simulator and there were some trades and interesting decisions in our mock. We used PFN’s draft board and picked players atop their ranking when it came time to select for the Cowboys. Let’s go: First round The pick: Graham Barton, C, Duke The Cowboys have the 24th pick of the first round and were offered a trade by the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona wanted to move up from No. 27 to No. 24 and also offered a 2025 second-round pick. So we took it. The Cardinals used it to pick cornerback Nate Wiggins from Clemson. So when the Cowboys came to bat we selected Barton. We bypassed Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II — we believe in Mazi Smith — Texas receiver Adonai Mitchell and Oklahoma tackle Tyler Guyton. Barton played tackle in college but he projects as a center/guard. Does Barton solve the center position? Yes, he does. But does that mean Tyler Smith moves to left tackle for the 2024 season with this selection? Second round The pick: Edgerrin Cooper, LB, Texas A&M We were offered trades by Denver and Cleveland to move down in this round. We rejected both. Cooperwas on our draft card when we picked with No. 56. We bypassed Florida State running back Trey Benson, who was available along with defensive tackles Ruke Orhorhoro (Clemson) and Leonard Taylor III (Miami). It’s hard to pass up Benson and his 906 rushing yards. We felt adding a linebacker was more important. Third round The pick: Devontez Walker, WR, North Carolina No trade offers this time. When Dallas was up at No. 87, Walker was our selection. He is a man with speed. He ran a 4.36 40 at the combine and had a 40 1/2 inch vertical jump. His 2022 season (921 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns) was much better than last year (699 receiving yards and seven touchdowns) but we believe in the Tar Heel. We bypassed Georgia safety Javon Bullard, Mississippi corner Kris Abrams-Draine and Texas tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders. Fourth round The pick: None The Cowboys don’t have a pick in this round but we tried to get back into it. We offered Baltimore our fifth-round pick in 2024 and 2025 to move to No. 113 and were laughed at. So we offered Carolina a fifth and seventh (No. 244) for their pick (No. 141) and that also was rejected. Fifth round The pick: Isaac Guerendo, RB, Louisville No more trades for us and at No. 174 Guerendo was our selection. He didn’t play much at Wisconsin and had a Lisfranc injury in 2021 but returned to play the next two seasons. We had a chance to draft defensive tackle Justin Eboigbe (Alabama), guard Javion Cohen (Miami) and safety Evan Williams (Oregon). If you’re worried about Guerendo, he ran a 4.33 40, produced a 41 1/2 vertical and a 10-9 broad jump at the combine. Health doesn’t seem to be an issue with him. Sixth round The pick: Jowan Briggs, DT, Cincinnati At No. 216 we had some good options but took Cincinnati defensive tackle Jowan Briggs. We thought about Notre Dame safety Thomas Harper and tight end AJ Banner from Michigan. We also had NC State guard Dylan McMahon available. Briggs just seemed right. You want to talk about a man with power, he bench-pressed 225 pounds 39 times at the Big 12 pro day. Seventh round The picks: Drake Nugent, C, Michigan and Josh DeBerry, CB, Texas A&M Again no desire to trade with anyone here so at No. 233 we snagged Nugent. You can’t go wrong with a guy named Drake, right? Nugent is a little short (6-1, 298 pounds) but his dad played for two NFL teams, so you’ve got to like that. The other seventh-round pick was DeBerry, who picked off two passes in 10 games for the Aggies. Among the players we bypassed for Nugent and DeBerry were tight end McCallan Castles (Tennessee), receiver Ryan Flournoy (Southeast Missouri State), Georgia running back Daijun Edwards and UConn linebacker Jackson Mitchell.

Gamecock Football Defensive Back Outlook 2024
As Spring football practice is under way for the Gamecocks, there is a mixture of knowns and unknowns at the defensive back position for the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks traditionally run a four-two-five defense, which includes five defensive backs on the field at once which consists of three safeties and two cornerbacks. Carolina lost starting cornerback Marcellus Dial to graduation last year. Dial was a solid player for the Gamecocks, but there is a wealth of talented young guys looking to step up such as Vacari Swain, Emory Floyd, and Judge Collier. All of these players were either three or four star rated recruits out of high school and got some experience playing in big moments last year, so whoever wins the starting job will look to blend their talent and experience they gained last year. O'Donnell Fortune will be the other starting cornerback for the Gamecocks. Fortune is a returning starter who had a solid year last year including a handful of interceptions. Fortune struggled at times, but he has the makeup of an NFL cornerback and is poised to lead the room this year. At the safety position, the Gamecocks have reason to feel incredibly confident because they return all three starters. Returning two year starter Nick Emmanwori looks to build on a strong finish to the season last year as a solid season could have him poised for the NFL. Other returning two year starter DQ Smith looks to hold down the second safety position where he also looks to build on a strong finish to the year last year and a solid season could earn him NFL scout attention. Lastly, Carolina returns one year starter and freshman sensation Jalon Kilgore at the third safety position. Kilgore arguably had the best year in the defensive back room for Carolina last year and his name is already circulating on NFL draft boards. Another strong year could potentially create very lucrative opportunities for him in the pros in the future. All in all, I expect a big season for Carolina's defensive backs due to veteran leadership, experience, and talent. I expect these guys to be a strength of this team also because they are lead by a fantastic defensive backs coach, Torian Gray, who overachieved in recruiting and talent development for the Gamecocks since he got here in 2021.

A New Season on the Horizon: 2024 Packers Preview
As the Green Bay Packers gear up for the 2024 NFL season, there’s a mix of anticipation and curiosity among the fanbase and analysts alike. With changes on the roster, coaching strategies, and the draft, the upcoming season is shaping up to be an intriguing chapter in the storied franchise’s history.
Roster and Management Overhaul
The 2024 season is a pivotal year for the Packers, marking their 104th in the NFL, during a transformative period underscored by a significant roster overhaul and strategic front office moves. Under the guidance of general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur, the team is adapting to the post-Aaron Rodgers era with a focus on building a formidable defense and a dynamic offense.
The draft and trades have been instrumental in this transition, with the Packers bolstering their defensive line by acquiring young talents like Devonte Wyatt and Lukas Van Ness. On offense, the addition of running back Josh Jacobs in place of Aaron Jones signifies a shift in strategy, aiming to diversify the attack and support Jordan Love, who is cementing his role as the starting quarterback.
Financial Strategy and Player Development
The Packers’ approach to maintaining a competitive roster involves judicious salary cap management and strategic player development. This includes investing in potential through the draft and making calculated moves in free agency, such as signing Xavier McKinney to upgrade the secondary.
The development of key players, especially on defense and within the receiving corps, remains a priority. The Packers are also eyeing improvements in their safety positions, with the potential addition of recently released safety Justin Simmons to form a top-tier duo with McKinney, highlighting a proactive approach to strengthening the team’s defensive backbone.
Looking Ahead: Draft and Expectations
With the draft on the horizon, Green Bay’s strategy focuses on reinforcing the offensive line and enhancing defensive depth, considering prospects like Johnny “Jer’Zhan” Newton for his disruptive play. The team’s draft philosophy, coupled with the integration of newly acquired talents, is designed to address immediate needs while setting the stage for future success.  As the Packers navigate through these changes, the goal remains clear: to build a team capable of contending for the Super Bowl, leveraging both youth and experience to create a balanced and competitive squad.
In the sports betting world, the Packers NFL spread and NFL Draft betting have become hot topics among fans and bettors alike. These elements add an extra layer of excitement and anticipation to the pre-season discussions, as speculations run high on how the Packers will perform against the spread and which draft picks could make an immediate impact.
As the new season approaches, the Packers are at a crossroads, blending seasoned veterans with promising newcomers. The team’s success will largely depend on how well the new roster gels and whether the coaching staff can adapt the game plan to maximize the talents at their disposal.
Conclusion
As we look toward the horizon, the 2024 Green Bay Packers season emerges as not just a new chapter but a thrilling expedition filled with promise and potential challenges. This year, a dynamic blend of emerging talents and seasoned veterans forms the team’s core, setting the stage for a compelling narrative of ambition and resilience. The Packers, with their rich history and dedicated fanbase, stand on the cusp of another significant campaign, driven by the collective hope of advancing closer to the pinnacle of NFL glory.
The loyal supporters of Cheesehead Nation, ever passionate and hopeful, are set to embark on this journey, their eyes fixed on the unfolding saga, eagerly anticipating the triumphs and trials that lie ahead. This season holds the promise of writing a new storied chapter in the annals of the Packers as they strive with determination and spirit to achieve greatness.

NFL Approves Revolutionary Hybrid Kickoff Rule for 2024 Season
By Joseph Correa
Follow @Frontproofmedia!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=/^http:/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id))(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');
In a landmark decision aimed at reviving one of football's most exciting plays, NFL owners have overwhelmingly approved a new "hybrid kickoff" rule that will dramatically alter the kickoff for the 2024 season. The proposal passed a 29-3 vote during the league's annual meeting.
The hybrid kickoff features a complete overhaul of the positioning and movement of both the kicking and receiving teams:
The kickoff will remain at the 35-yard line, but the other ten players on the kicking team must line up at the receiving team's 40-yard line until the kick is caught or hits the ground.
The receiving team must have at least seven players lined up in a new "setup zone" between their own 35 and 30-yard lines, with a maximum of 2 returners allowed in a designated "landing zone" between the goal line and 20-yard line.
Once the ball lands in the "landing zone," the receiving team is required to attempt a return. Kicks into the end zone can either be returned or downed at the 20.
The key objective is to create more opportunities for kickoff returns by forcing kicks into the "landing zone" while preventing high-speed collisions that can lead to injuries.
"It will bring the play back into a relevant play, an important play, and an exciting play," said Commissioner Roger Goodell. "We can do it where the injury rate hopefully will drop."
Other key aspects of the new rule:
Touchbacks result in the ball being placed at the 30-yard line instead of the 25.
Onside kicks can only be attempted in the 4th quarter or overtime when trailing. Teams must declare their intention.
Penalties on scoring plays no longer carry over to the kickoff.
The hybrid kickoff overhaul is considered a one-year trial for 2024, allowing the league to evaluate its effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments for future seasons.
While it may take some getting used to, the dramatic new kickoff rule aims to boost excitement and returns while improving player safety on one of the game's most dangerous plays.

Sudden Exit: Michigan's Keon Sabb Declares Transfer Portal After Harbaugh's NFL Departure
In a surprising turn of events, the Michigan Wolverines football program has been hit with yet another blow. After Jim Harbaugh’s departure to the NFL, the team’s highly talented safety, Keon Sabb, has decided to enter the transfer portal. This unexpected move has left fans stunned and questioning the future of Michigan football. In this article, we delve into the reasons behind Sabb’s decision and examine the possible impact of his departure on the team’s overall dynamics.
The Harbaugh Factor: Jim Harbaugh, once a beacon of hope for Michigan football, recently bid farewell to his alma mater and accepted a coaching position in the National Football League (NFL). This news sent shockwaves through both the Michigan fanbase and the team. Many believed that Sabb’s decision to transfer was directly influenced by the departure of Harbaugh. The close relationship between Sabb and Harbaugh, built over their time together in Ann Arbor, seems to have played a significant role in this unexpected move.
Tumblr media
The Cheap Jerseys Connection: While Sabb’s transfer news dominated headlines, rumors also emerged linking his decision to the availability of cheap jerseys. Although this might seem unrelated at first glance, it reflects the larger issue of players seeking a balance between athletic and financial stability. In the ever-evolving landscape of college sports, athletes are increasingly aware of their marketability and the value of their brand. Sabb’s potential interest in inexpensive jerseys may signify a desire for financial stability and control over his personal brand.
The Domino Effect: Sabb’s decision to enter the transfer portal could potentially trigger a domino effect, leading to further transfers within the team. When a highly skilled player like Sabb chooses to explore other opportunities, it may influence his teammates to evaluate their own paths as well. Consequently, Michigan’s new coaching staff will face challenges not only in recruiting new talent but also in retaining the existing roster. The departure of key players could significantly impact the team’s depth, leadership, and overall competitiveness in the coming seasons.
Michigan football finds itself in a whirlwind of change as Keon Sabb’s decision to enter the transfer portal following Jim Harbaugh’s exit to the NFL has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the program. Sabb’s choice highlights the importance of stability and personal branding for athletes in the modern college sports landscape. As the coaching search continues, the Wolverines must navigate these challenging waters, aiming to retain their talented players and rebuild a solid foundation for success. Only time will tell how this sudden exit will shape the future of Michigan football.
Although it isn’t clear if Sabb has left the door open to return to Michigan, his entry into the transfer portal suggests he is likely looking to play elsewhere next season, and is perhaps looking for the opportunity to be a regular starter.

The 4-3 Defensive Formation in Football
Tumblr media
One of the foundational elements of modern NFL formations is the 4-3 defense, which places four down linemen up at the line of scrimmage and three linebackers behind them. This scheme was developed in the late 1950s by Tom Landry (who was then a New York Giants defensive coordinator) as a way of containing the explosive attack of running back Jim Brown.
The 4-3 was also informed by the contributions of defensive coach Garrard "Buster" Ramsey of the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears linebacker Bill George. Jimmy Johnson developed modern 4-3 strategies throughout his time coaching at the University of Miami and brought these new formations to the Dallas Cowboys when he supplanted Tom Landry as head coach.
In addition to guarding against a running attack, 4-3 schemes also provide support to the two deep safeties in covering short and mid-range passes. Man-to-man coverage is possible, but a variety of popular zone coverage schemes are also run from the 4-3 formation, with each player responsible for covering his own area on the field.
Before detailing each member’s role within the 4-3 formation, it’s important to note that there are gaps between offensive linemen, through which running actions can occur. The A gaps are on either side of the center (the innermost lineman, who snaps the ball to the quarterback) and bounded by the offensive guards. Between the guards and the offensive tackles are the B gaps, while the C gaps are those outside the tackle. (If the offensive formation has tight ends, there is also a D gap). The A gaps are thus the innermost seams and the C or D gaps the outermost.
In the center of the 4-3 defense is the nose tackle (the 0 position), who lines up directly facing the center and tends to be one of the most physically dominant players on the field. Often double teamed, the nose guards against running backs targeting the seam and quarterbacks trying sneak attempts.
At the adjacent 1 position stands the defensive tackle, with alignment shaded to the left or right shoulder of the offensive center. Also referred to as a nose tackle, this player differs from the 0 in targeting only one of the A gaps. Behind these two players is the 3, a defensive tackle who focuses on the pass rushing, charging across the line in an effort to sack the quarterback. Alternatively, the tackle can drop back and provide coverage support against the run or short pass.
Lining up across from the offensive tackles on either side of the 0 and 1 are the defensive ends (4 and 5 positions). They are tasked with covering both the B and C gaps. Their primary aim is to get into the backfield and place pressure on the quarterback, as well as to cover against the run. The two other players in the 4-3 formation are lined up behind their teammates on the line and have varied roles, from stuffing runs to assisting the deep safety and disrupting the passing attack.
When operating as a unit, these seven core defensive player make it extremely hard for ball carriers to find gaps and run freely. At the same time, they can effectively engineer pass rushes, creating pressure up the middle. One player may engage with an offensive lineman and allow the other to slip through and target the quarterback unhindered, causing a rushed pass or getting a sack.

Chargers end season on a somber note
Tumblr media
INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The best way to describe the 2023 regular season for the Los Angeles Chargers would be unfulfilled. The Chargers left a lot of plays on the football field. The team had a lot of expectations going into the season.  The promise of success for the Chargers turned into key players being waived or traded and management personnel being fired. The Chargers finished their season on a humble note, going 5-12 on the year.  A  13-12 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at SoFi Stadium in the team’s season finale, might have summed up the season Los Angeles had.
Tumblr media
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Easton Stick runs for some of the 77 yards he gained on the ground against the Kansas City Chiefs on Jan. 7, 2024. Stick also passed for 258 yards in a 13-12 defeat to the Chiefs. Photo credit: Melinda Meijer/News4usonline.com "I told the team after the game that we made a pact — after the Raiders game, where we were put in this situation — that we were going to fight and we were going to compete, we were going to make this organization proud, and I do think they did that,” Chargers interim head coach Giff Smith said. “We didn't get the wins like we wanted to, but as far as what we were trying to accomplish, coming off of a difficult loss in Las Vegas, the character of these guys, I really think they rallied together and really fought for three games, I really do." The Chargers lost another opportunity to showcase to the rest of the NFL that they could be the NEXT great team in the league. They have a franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert. The pieces around Herbert were there.  Running back Austin Ekeler came back for another season to play with the ballclub. Wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen were supposed to scare opponents. On defense, linebacker Khalil Mack and safety Derwin James were the lockdown pros.  With that said, the Chargers never found a consistent offense or any type of a defensive rhythm. As a result, the Chargers had a lot of uneven play during the season.   Interestingly enough, the way the season went for the Chargers, a sequence of plays in the first quarter against the Chiefs was sort of symbolic of things going right and then moving in the wrong direction for Los Angeles.
Tumblr media
Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler (30) rushes for yardage against the Kansas City Chiefs on Jan. 7, 2024. Photo credit: Melinda Meijer/News4usonline.com Easton Stick, the backup to Herbert, was eyeballing the goal line and made a scramble up the middle. Stick was stripped of the ball and Kansas City defensive back Mike Edwards scooped up the ball and ran 97 yards the other way for the defensive score. You just can’t write this stuff up.   Still, Stick battled and showed himself to be a quality quarterback in this league, not only against the Chiefs, but in the the games he was called to duty after Herbert was lost to the season after suffering a hand injury to his right hand.  Against the Chiefs, Stick perhaps improved his stock as a backup quarterback or even a starter somewhere. Doing his best Herbert impression, Stick rushed for 77 yards and passed for an additional 258 yards in the loss to Kansas City.  With Herbert going down, Stick had a month to prove he can play in this league. He believes he did that. Stick said there was a moment when the lightbulb went off.    "I think when I went in against Denver, after Justin's deal, I felt like I saw it and was like, 'OK, I can do this.' That was probably the first time. Kellen does such a good job of putting us in a position, Justin and I, to go out there and play well and just play clear and play fast,” Stick said. “I'm appreciative of Kellen, for Nuss , for building confidence in that room, even when it was going tough for a while. Those two guys, especially, I think had a huge part in it."  The Chargers came into the 2023 NFL season with high hopes. And for good reason. The Chargers, strapped with the right arm of Herbert, were on many preseason lists as potential Super Bowl contenders.
Tumblr media

Gilman and the Chargers fell in defeat to the Chiefs in their regular season finale, losing 13-12. Photo credit: Melinda Meijer/News4usonline.com That didn’t happen. A lot went sideways for the Chargers from August until the first week of January. In training camp, every team has Super Bowl aspirations. The Chargers were no different from any other team. Expectations. High hopes. None of that panned out for the Chargers.  A year after their playoff collapse against the Jacksonville Jaguars in an AFC Wild Card game, the Chargers were not good enough to make the postseason. Former head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco lost their jobs thanks to a 63-21 wipeout the Las Vegas Raiders handed the team. In his nearly three years as head coach of the Chargers, Staley compiled a win-loss record of 24-24. With a high-profile roster, the Chargers were nothing more than an average or mediocre team at best under Staley. Now that this season has concluded, it’s time for the Chargers to look for their future head coach.  Smith is just grateful for the opportunity to fill in as the head coach for the Chargers.  "Being grateful. I've been very blessed in my life. This was a great opportunity to give back to these young men, so I'm extremely grateful for that," Smith said.  Read the full article
