|NGE Rebuild spoiler|
Damn, the evolution as a character of Shinji, growing as a person
Evangelion made me feel amazing, I don't think I'll ever see something like this again and I love this feeling
At first I felt like I wouldn't like him, but I would love the world building and the things around him, but then at the middle of NGE Rebuild 2.0, he began to change and I liked it, at the anime it happens in other way but I like it too, he's truly a relatable character
He wants to feel loved but don't want to love, he just doesn't want to feel alone, never trying to understand people around him
The end of 3.0+1.0 made me feel at my best, seeing him trying to understand other people around him, seeing that his father was just like him, that he never tried to really be good to Asuka, he became an amazing person as he stopped crying at his past and started growing up

OKAY LETS DO THIS THING
Pinned message for you to understand how this is gonna work
episodes are tagged #nge [number]
Final episode thoughts are under #closing thoughts
I know very little about Evangelion as a whole. I'm aware of the memes and the general gist of the original show's ending, but I know nothing more. This is a blind liveblog of the franchise.
I will be covering:
The original series (Netflix ver, subbed)
End of Eva (ditto)
Eva 1.1: You Are (Not) Alone
Eva 2.2: You Can (Not) Advance
Eva 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo
Eva 3.0+1.0
I'm gonna try to condense thoughts into watching blocks, and tag each set of thoughts per episode. Please no spoilers. I know about the hospital in EoE, i know about the orange juice, but other than that, I know literally nothing.
Here we go, I guess.
CURRENT PROGRESS: EVA 1/26

Thoughts on the Evangelion Rebuilds, Part 2: Eva 3.33 and 3.0+1.0
[also imported from twitter for posterity + added paragraphs]
[big spoiler warning for the rebuild ending]
Watched these two back-to-back. What a rollercoaster. Overall I still very much prefer the original 1995 NGE + EoE, but this was a lot of fun too.
Among all the Rebuild films, my favorite parts were definitely 3.33 and the first half of 3.0+1.0 because they focused on characters and them interacting with each other and the world.
The action scenes all throughout, however, were just a mess of CGI vomit, except for the climax of 3.33 which was really good (the EVAs were 2D/hand-drawn in those scenes and it was noticeably better than any of their 3DCG action scenes).
Just everything about 3.33 felt really good: the timeskip plot and character designs (Misato, Asuka, and Maya look really cool here), the darker tone, the post-post-apocalyptic vibes, the gay piano scene, the climax pitting Shinji, Kaworu, and Rei against Asuka and Mari. And like I mentioned previously, the hand-drawn Eva battle!! It’s everything I would have wanted from an Evangelion Rebuild - a story that does something new and different with the universe.
3.0+1.0 was a mixed bag. The first half was so good, a great follow-up to the events of 3.33. All the main cast’s interactions in the “village” were the highlights of the film, especially Rei. The second half consisted mostly of a big CGI battle that gave me a headache. I didn’t really like it, but it was nice to see Shinji overcome his fears and insecurities to save himself and everyone else.
I'll admit I'm not big fan of Mari because imo because she has very little meaningful interaction w/ the other characters up until the very end. Most of her scenes were just action. So the ending, while wholesome, didn't hit me as hard as it could've.
If they really wanted Mari to be so important, they should've built her relationships with the others better from 2.0 onwards. Because up until the second half of 3.0+1.0 she feels like such a distant entity to Shinji and the other main characters. And no, i dont think Mari had to be a traumatized unstable teen like Shinji, Rei, and Asuka (heck, Asuka was a lot more stable in Rebuild albeit less interesting). I actually think it was a good idea to add a character like her to shake up the story dynamic, but I think they wasted her potential.
given all the fanservice, I was expecting them to go full harry potter with the final scene in the train station and see everyone happy together but overall ending was very wholesome and i'm still happy for my boi Shinji
Favorite things from Rebuilds:  + Rei (better than NGE Rei)  + Shinji (equal to NGE Shinji) + all of 3.33 + Village 3 arc from 3.0+1.0 + Asuka's hat
Not a big fan of: - Asuka (not as great as NGE Asuka) - Mari (see tweets above) - CGI vomit action scenes - the giant spaceships

(This is specifically ABOUT 3.0+1.0, NOT 3.0, or NGE)
Spoilers ahead
I have to wonder how eva’s japanese LGBT audience feels like after this movie. After 8 entire fucking years of khara putting out kawoshin merch NON-STOP, insinuating through interviews that kawoshin COULD be good for each other (really, it was only a matter of setting healthy boundaries if the looping was the only thing keeping kaworu attached to Shinji/sacrificing himself to cope with his fate), only for 3.0+1.0 to shoot it down in three minutes tops of exposition and not even allow room for ambiguity. I would believe that kawoshin was only a matter of a tragedic pair that could never be if it wasn’t for the fact that:
* Gendo is compared to Kaworu in the sense that both of them were lonely, played piano (yes, they really went there) and only had Yui/Shinji in the world. The idea is that both of them were dependent on their respective partners to somehow bring them happiness. So what is Gendo rewarded with, in shin eva? After abandoning, neglecting, abusing his own son, being mainly responsible for the state of the world and harming billions of innocents? He’s redeemed through a sob story and gets to be reunited with Yui. In other words, Gendo’s obsessiveness is remunerated with the same person he became dependent on, but Kaworu/Shinji have no choice but to separate indefinitely.
>Lovers committing double suicide believed that they would be united again in heaven, a view supported by feudal teaching in Edo period Japan, which taught that the bond between two lovers is continued into the next world, and by the teaching of Pure Land Buddhism wherein it is believed that through double suicide, one can approach rebirth in the Pure Land.
(this has not been confirmed canon, but god forbid the implications that the Gendo/Yui scene could have)
(Shinji and Kaworu don’t even get to stay as friends in the Neon Genesis, because the message is that Anno (Shinji) bid farewell to all of the eva characters and his relationship with them, for good. That’s why they go their opposite ways in the last train scene)
* Not to mention the wlw baiting with Asuka & Mari (Kaworu/Shinji parallels were even used in the promotional material to suggest that they had a bond akin to theirs), that also added up to nothing bc ig gay ppl only serve as Marketing Tools lol.
* Kaworu might be coupled with Rei in the “Neon Genesis”. Kaworu is a character that throughout the years (in spin-offs, drama CDs, magazines, you name it) has been portrayed as having little romantic/sexual interest in women and thus had been established as a more gay coded/leaning character to the audience/fans. “He could be bi/pan!” do you really think that this was not a decision made out of convenience because they didn’t want to commit to him being exclusively mlm?
Any traces of Shinji’s/Mari’s/Kaworu’s and even Maya’s queerness are as good as gone by the end of the film. Finito. This goes WAY beyond “omg we know your ship didn’t become canon but that doesn’t mean it’s queerbaiting!!” This is straight up 25 years that amounted to NOTHING but picking people’s pockets for profit and selling out the narrative that gay relationships are temporary and adults eventually settle down for the opposite sex (actual belief in the conservative parts of japan). How ppl are blind to this as if it has nothing to do with khara’s potential views on lgbt relationships is beyond me.

I’ve been thinking a bit more about Kaworu, Shinji, and 3.0+1.0 today. So of course, spoilers if you haven’t seen it below.
I was happy that Kaworu finally just about spelled it out for Shinji that he was his alter ego, with the “I am you” comment. I don’t know how many people know the alter ego idea behind Kaworu...there’s an old post somewhere that discusses it, I know I elaborated on the idea in my breakdown of the manga’s “Twisted Night” scene.
But, if you think  about it - start with his design. He’s handsome, taller, has “good hair”, casual/laid back, confident. Building on that, Shinji sees that he is treated specially, he’s powerful, but mostly very calm and composed, and calculating. Very seldom acts on emotion only, there’s almost always a secondary motive to everything he does. Never shows his whole hand even when he may not be right. Never hesitates to make a decision, even when it’s an unpleasant one. (I’m thinking of the kitten here.)
In any case, if you’re on board with that, think about it now with 3.0+1.0′s emphasis on coming of age for Shinji. Kaworu is Shinji’s idea of his own ideal adult self, and as of the end of the movie, Shinji has successfully “become an adult” (by getting rid of the terrible emotions and EVAs that stunted his development). And the very last scene shows Kaworu on the other side of the tracks.
If you’re thinking as Kaworu as his alter ego, as in someone who Shinji needs to become more like to survive his ordeal to “become an adult”, wouldn’t it make sense why they’re separated once Shinji “grows up”? Thematically, as an ideal, he wouldn’t be necessary anymore. Shinji would already have become the adult he needs to be.
When you think about that in context of the rest of the series, wouldn’t it now make sense why Kaworu keeps dying? Each time he dies, it’s Shinji failing to grow, failing to mold himself to those ideals he sees in Kaworu. So Kaworu dies, and so does (most of) the rest of the world (usually), because Shinji has given in to his impulsive and emotional side that keep him in his childhood.
It’s the time he breaks out of his emotional impulsiveness and selfishness to become an adult that Kaworu survives.
Additionally, with the train as a transitional metaphor, Shinji et al seem to have finished their journey, but Kaworu’s plot ended with needing figure out what happiness really means instead of what he thought it would be. His being on the other side of the tracks may mean he still has more journeying to do...
