Happy to say I called the Benvi endgame all the way back at the s1 finale and never had a doubt about their endgame status. The narrative was always leading in that direction and it was obvious (at least to me).

regarding Ben’s actions in the beginning of S4.

im doing a hyper binge of all the benvi scenes in order and it is SO obvious that Ben iced Devi out in the beginning of S4 because she has hurt him over and over again (and in ways that specifically trigger his worst fears and insecurities) and he even though he loves her, he wants to beat her to the punch this time. he’s trying to hurt her before she hurts him because he’s fucking scared. the stupid Dwight Howard thing was like a voice confirming his worst fears---it could have been anyone. if they had only TALKED about it then his actions wouldn’t have seemed like a random villain arc but an understandable flight instict.

i understand Devi has apologized and I think Ben has forgiven her (it seems like they were implying that they have some unspoken agreement/resolution) but just one conversation that had something like “I am so scared of what will happen if you hurt me again,” and then Devi comforting him would have meant so much.

actually what I DO like (surprisingly) is Ben being the one to reach out in the end---previously I was hoping it would be Devi first. The ball is firmly in his court all season and he has to make the choice to either hold onto the past or face his fears and trust that Devi has grown and this time would be different. That’s major growth from someone who has a major fear of abandonment/rejection and has always lashed out and guarded his vulnerable side. I just wish we would have SEEN it happen more explicitly.

s4 spoilers aside...since the b*vi/daxton discouse is a hot topic right now, i just wanna say the main conflict of this love triangle has never been "who's the better fit for devi" like most teen drama love triangles. That's barely scratching the surface. It's more "when will devi learn to love herself so she could accept to be loved by someone else", isn't it? I feel like it's been made obvious by nalini's speech. I also feel like it would be denial for a b*nvi stan to claim that Paxton doesn't like her for her. Girl put him through hell and he still came back for more. Just like, as a daxton myself, I can admit ben does like her personality, even after everything he put her through. Also, it's canon. Narratively, "The One" could be either one of them at this point on the show. I know what makes most most sense to me and we know who's the most likely winner because of the showrunner's name....but narratively, both boys had/have feelings for Devi because of she is. I'm tired of reading otherwise.

Once everyone's able to admit that, the debate gets meatier. We can focus on devi's final choice and her own feelings. There will be a lot of b*nvi based on the trailer but what matters to me is how they look vs. daxton. From my POV, once devi learns to love herself and the stomach knots fade a bit after the margot situation, picking ben over paxton is settling for mediocrity when the finished product was in reach. But that's just me. Mindy made her choice.

Unpopular opinion: I know a lot of people had beef with Ben and Devi in season 2, and I understand why, but I really liked the turn they took after Devi cheated on him. It didn't make sense for them to return immediately to banter (especially after having his heart BROKEN!!! still can't believe he said that im sobbing) was hard for Ben, but ultimately, showed they cared about each other deeply and were there for each other in hard times. I really liked seeing that softer side to their relationsh

THIS!!! i see this argument so much, about how ben was "awful" and "mean" to devi after the events of 2x02. and like...yeah. duh. of course he was. because he was all-in with her. he really, really liked her. and she just ripped his heart out of his chest. for paxton. someone he knew she had a thing for. the most popular guy at school, the guy everyone fawns over. ben thought devi had picked him, and he was so happy that she was his girlfriend, but then he realized he wasn't her first choice (until eleanor's bomb drop in 2x10, obv).

and in 3x04 he says, "Yeah, well, she broke my heart." because even if it wasn't a long relationship by any means, it meant so much to ben. he and devi have all of this shared history, history that goes deeper than anything she and paxton ever had. and she just...threw it away. left him behind. broke his heart.

i think their progression from enemies to sort-of friends to dating to jilted ex-lovers to friends again really felt natural for who they are. all of this history they have, all these years they've spent so close to each other (even if it was as rivals for a good portion of it) ultimately culminates into those last few moments of 3x10 where devi finally realizes it's ben. it's been ben all along. she fits with him. she has never had to be anyone but herself with him. he is a constant in a way that no one else has ever been in her life.

it's ben. of course it's ben. it's always been ben.

LISTEN. when paxton hall-yoshida made a point to show up at devi’s house, he was committed to that choice. say one thing about that guy, but he’s loyal and steadfast and he wouldn’t try to backtrack on the gesture that’s already been made because that’s simply not his style. casual to the point of obscuring his emotions? absolutely - think oh, i think you’re insane, but in a good way. that’s why it’s cool we’re friends or you look cool in that outfit or even see you monday, devi.

but one thing he isn’t - ESPECIALLY at this point in the season, when he has no freaking reason to be because his life is as it’s always been - is uncertain

aaaaah, thank you (and thank you for keeping that post alive lol)!!! I still stand by it! Devi and Paxton are a great fit (and Paxton isn’t just “being a dream”). They have a comfortable healthy relationship and I’d have loved to see them grow as a couple! Especially with them being diaspora kids and Paxton being more secure in himself vs Devi and her many insecurities.
