y/ndevils00 if you’re allergic to sappiness, you may wanna keep scrolling tonight!
first of all, i’m so proud of ALL my boys tonight! all 5 of our goal scorers, the assisters, and the ones who just played their asses off tonight!
now is where it gets sappy!
my jacky: you broke a 22 year old franchise points record tonight. YOU did that. i always knew you would do it, and i’m so grateful that i was there to see it happen. you’re my (real) best friend, my love, my heart, the father to my cat, and the best hockey player i’ve ever seen (sorry boys). the talent that you possess is constantly leaving me awestruck, and i can’t wait to see what you achieve in the future. i can’t imagine the past 3 years without you, and i hope i never have to live a future without you either. i am so unbelievably proud of you. congratulations, my sweet boy. lil satan and i love you to pluto! <3
my lukey: my little (not so little) brother for the past 3 years. for some context, i met luke when he came to a devils game literally the same month i started working for the team. jack introduced me to him and lukey and i hit it off. i ended up sitting with him at the game, we exchanged numbers, and i adopted him as my own little brother very quickly. when luke was chosen in the 2021 draft, i cried tears of joy; but those tears were nothing compared to the ones i shed tonight. my baby brother made his nhl debut tonight and i couldn’t be happier for him. i look forward to seeing you absolutely kick ass and show everyone in this league how incredibly talented you are. congratulations on your debut, smush! i love you! <3
p.s. rasmus dahlin, i am in your walls. stay away from my boyfriend.

I always breathe easier when Geno's back in the U.S. ...
From TH, September 5, 2023
The KHL is setting a scary precedent with the handling of Russian prospects who were drafted by NHL teams.
A timeline, to catch you up:
June 2015: Flyers draft goalie Ivan Fedotov in the seventh round. Fedotov develops into one of the top non-NHL goalies in the world.
2021-22 season: Fedotov signs for a year with the KHL club CSKA. CSKA is owned by a Russian state-run oil company.
February 2022: Fedotov says publicly in interview at Olympics that he intends on moving to the NHL
May 7, 2022:  Fedotov signs one-year deal with Flyers
Early June 2022: Fedotov arrested by Russian law enforcement for suspicion of evading military service and sent to remote military base in eastern part of the country
July 1, 2022: Fedotov becomes sick and rushed to hospital. His lawyer said that Fedotov had been given some kind of injections on the base, and that he and Fedotov's family weren't allowed to see him in the hospital. Fedotov is released from the hospital after a couple of days, but misses the entire 2022-23 season while at the military base. His contract with the Flyers slides a year to 2023-24.
July 8, 2023: Fedotov's KHL club CSKA signs him to a two-year extension, giving him two competing and active contracts.
Aug. 14, 2023: The IIHF completes its investigation of the competing contracts and rules in favor of the Flyers, saying that the CSKA contract is invalid. The IIHF gives CSKA a one-year ban on signing  players for international transfers. Fedotov is also suspended from international competitions for four months, which is irrelevant given that Russia isn't competing in national tournaments anytime soon. The IIHF suspended Russia from international play after the invasion of Ukraine. The IIHF suspension of Fedotov doesn't affect his ability to play in the NHL.
Sept. 1, 2023: CSKA has its regular season opener ... and starts Fedotov. KHL president and former Penguin Alexei Morozov releases a statement essentially saying that because they disagree with the IIHF ruling, they're going to do what they want: “The KHL accepted this roster in accordance with our central database, therefore Fedotov can play. Neither the KHL nor the club agree with the IIHF’s decision, which infringes the constitutional rights of a Russian citizen to work. Russia’s prosecutor general spoke in defense of the player, and sent a message to the Russian Hockey Federation, the club and the league about the consequences of violating his right to work and insisting that Fedotov be allowed to take part in the championship.”
Fedotov allowed five goals in a loss in the opener.
That same day, the IIHF fined CSKA 5,000 Swiss Francs (roughly the equivalent $5,600 USD) for playing Fedotov, and says that if Fedotov continues to play, CSKA will be subject to further sanctions.
Since then, CSKA has played two games. Fedotov has been dressed and listed as the backup for both. Those are still violations, even though he didn't start.
To sum things up: The KHL is going rogue and setting a dangerous precedent. This is the first time the league has totally disobeyed the IIHF, and it'll be interesting to see how the IIHF moves forward here.
The Penguins have three prospects in Russia: Goaltender Sergei Murashov, drafted in the fourth round in 2022 and the Russian junior league's top goaltender last season; forward Kirill Tankov, drafted in the seventh round in 2021 and playing in the Russian second league after missing all of last season with a broken neck; and forward Mikhail Ilyin, drafted in the fifth round this summer and starting the year in the KHL.
NHL signing rights don't expire for players drafted out of Russia because of the lack of a formal transfer agreement between the NHL and Russia. The Penguins hold onto their NHL rights indefinitely.
Russian teams playing dirty to try to keep their top players isn't new. Evgeni Malkin had to escape to get to Pittsburgh in 2006. His club Magnitogorsk convinced him to play one more year in Russia after he was drafted by the Penguins to show his loyalty to the city and country. He did that, but the next summer team officials followed him to his home and coerced him into signing a one-year deal. The team had his passport, so he couldn't leave on his own. Magnitogorsk had an August tournament in Finland to start the year, so Malkin had his passport, and he hid in Finland for a few days until he could get a U.S. visa and flight to Los Angeles.
With Russian teams and the national teams not playing in other countries now because of the bans due to the invasion of Ukraine, prospects like Fedotov don't have the same opportunity to escape while in another country.
As an aside, this whole situation shows why the hope some fans had to ban Russian players from the NHL because of the invasion of Ukraine is totally misguided. ... You have the league and its government-owned teams doing all they can to keep one guy sticking around at home, even sending him to a military base in Siberia for a year. Giving the KHL all their top players back would be a dream for Russia and the KHL.

The Blighted Beast: A Midseason Update
Do not repost.
We are now around the halfway point of the 2022-23 NHL season, so it’s time to check in with our favorite cursed airplane! N803TJ has transported 8 teams to 28 road games across the first half of the season, and those teams have not had enjoyable trips. At 6-21-0, N803TJ is rocking a road win percentage of 0.222, which—if it was a team—would put it dead last in the league.
But how does that compare to a typical road record?
On average, the road team will win an NHL game around 45% of the time. This win percentage has been slowly trending up over the years—road teams won only 42.6% of regular season games across the league in the 2005-06 season, but won 46.3% of games in the 2021-22 season. Of course, there’s variation from season to season—in 2010-11, the road win percentage got all the way up to 48.1%, and the more recent 2017-18 season it dipped to 43.7%—and the averages for the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season and the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons must be taken with a grain of salt, but the general trend shows that road wins are more common now than they were 17 years ago. In the regular season, home ice advantage seems to be disappearing.
Tumblr media
Fig. 1. Road win percentages by season from 2005-06 to 2021-22. Note that 2012-13, 2019-20, and 2020-21 are shortened seasons.
Unless, of course, the road team flew in on N803TJ.
Tumblr media
Fig. 2. Distribution of road win percentages from 2005-06 to 2021-22.
N803TJ's current 0.222 win percentage is 3.8 standard deviations below the 2005-06 to 2021-22 league-wide mean win percentage of 0.453, and 8 mean absolute deviations below the mean. It is clearly an outlier compared to how road games usually go.
This discrepancy can’t be entirely chalked up to N803TJ carrying bad teams around, either. Yes, the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets have been the most frequent passenger on N803TJ, but the third most frequent traveler on N803TJ this season has been the league-leading Boston Bruins. The Bruins boast a road record of 13-4-1, which is a stunning points percentage of 0.750. When looking only at their four road games when flying on N803TJ, however, that drops to .500. It’s a small sample size, yes, but it’s still an indication of how powerfully cursed the Blighted Beast is that it can reduce the strongest team in the league to odds like a coin flip.
As for the Penguins, the effects of N803TJ on this season are crystal clear. The Penguins' seven game west coast losing streak in late October-early November kicked off with the team's first meeting with N803TJ, on a flight from Columbus to Edmonton. Their first game after the Christmas break was also a road loss on N803TJ. They are 1-6-0 (0.143) in seven road games after flying on the Blighted Beast; their overall road record is 10-9-2 (0.524), which means that in road games that the Penguins flew to on a different plane, they are 9-3-2 (0.714). It's as if there are two separate Penguins teams that show up to road games, and which one you get depends entirely on which plane they take to get there.
Of course, this could all change in the second half of the season. Hockey is a fickle game, and curses are made to be broken. We will have to watch closely to see when and how N803TJ's power meets its match—if it happens at all.

im curious about something, and i want to know people's answers
question: who do you think is the most underappreciated nhl player(s) of the 2021-22 season? you can include playoffs
and remember, underappreciated, not underrated. underappreciated has to do more with popularity and exposure rather than raw ability and talent
for example, my answer: chris kreider
he scored 52 goals in the regular season making him the 4th 50 goal scorer in Rangers history, I wouldn't say he's underrated, yet not a lot of people bring his name up when talking about above average players, so I'd say he's more underappreciated
send your answers through, let's discuss <33

Eight Players from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Sent to Nailers Camp
Tumblr media
The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced that eight players have been added to their training camp roster. All eight players are coming from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. In goal, Taylor Gauthier returns for his second professional season. Gauthier started last year in Wheeling, then played the entire second half of the campaign for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Between the two levels, he posted a 16-10-7 record in 36 appearances. On the blueline, the Nailers received rookie Thimo Nickl. Nickl is a 21-year old native of Austria, who is set to make his North American pro debut, after playing the last three seasons in Sweden. He was originally selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. There are six forwards on their way to the Friendly City, and two of those were members of last year's squad. Justin Addamo had an enormous rookie season with 21 goals and 33 points in 42 ECHL games, as well as five AHL goals, which helped him earn an AHL contract from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Jordan Frasca is beginning the second season of his three-year NHL entry level contract. Frasca collected 12 points in 36 games with the Nailers, and really hit his stride in March, when he scored four times in a five-game span. 2020 fourth-round draft pick Lukas Svejkovsky begins his second pro season, after recording 15 points as a rookie with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Svejkovsky had electric numbers in juniors, as he finished the 2021-22 season with 76 points in 57 games. Ty Glover also enters his second season in the organization, after tallying seven goals and 12 points for the AHL Penguins a year ago. Glover will be the fourth player in team history from England. Dillon Hamaliuk was acquired by Pittsburgh in a trade with the San Jose Sharks over the summer. Hamaliuk spent the majority of the 2021-22 season with the AHL's San Jose Barracuda, then amassed seven points in six games last year with the Wichita Thunder. Evan Vierling earned an AHL contract this summer, following an outstanding conclusion to his junior career. Vierling finished fifth in the OHL with 95 points as a member of the Barrie Colts. Wheeling's training camp roster now consists of 18 forwards, eight defensemen, and three goalies for a total of 29 players. The Nailers will have an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday at 7:10, followed by a preseason game against Cincinnati on Sunday at 2:10. Both contests are free to attend with open seating. The 2023-24 regular season begins on Saturday, October 21st, when Wheeling visits Cincinnati at 7:35. The home opener is Saturday, November 4th at 7:10 against Reading. Mad Chad Taylor will be the star of the night, as he juggles chainsaws. That night will also feature a magnetic schedule giveaway and the debut of Big Timber Brewing's Nail Ale. Season memberships and other terrific ticket plans for the 2023-24 season are available now by calling (304) 234-GOAL. NHL goalie tandem rankings for 2022-23
NHL goalie tandem rankings for 2022-23
The NHL didn’t exactly have goalie tandems last season. It was more like gaggles of goaltenders. Due to COVID-19 absences, injuries and ineffectiveness, a record 119 goalies appeared in 2021-22 regular-season games, from Akira Schmid to Zach Fucale. As a result, NHL scoring numbers climbed to their highest levels in nearly 30 years. The 2022-23 NHL regular season should offer a bit more normalcy…

all about Trevor Zegras
Zegras was born on March 20, 2001, in Bedford, New York[2] to parents of Greek descent[3] Gary and Julie.[4] He began skating at the age of three and played in the Rising Stars youth program alongside his cousins.[5] Growing up, he was a fan of the New York Rangers but studied and emulated Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks.[6]
Playing careerEdit
Growing up in New York, Zegras played bantam major hockey with the Mid Fairfield Rangers before joining the Avon Old Farms school's Winged Beavers of the Founders League (USHS).[7] During his tenure with the Winged Beavers from 2016 to 2017, Zegras also recorded 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points.[8] As a sophomore at Avon Old Farms, Zegras attended the USA Hockey National Team Development Program's (USNTDP) Top 40 tryout and qualified for the team.[5]
Zegras joined the USNTDP under 17 team for their 2017–18 season in the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he recorded 20 goals and 39 assists for 59 points. Following this, he joined their U18 team in 2018–19 where he earned 87 points, including 61 assists.[5] As a result of his play in the USHL, Zegras was drafted in the first round, ninth overall, by the Anaheim Ducks at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.[4] In spite of his draft selection, Zegras kept his commitment to play NCAA Division I ice hockey for Boston University.[8]
Collegiate
Edit
Zegras played for the Boston University Terriers men's ice hockey team for the 2019–20 NCAA season. He competed with the Terriers in 33 games where he finished tied for third among Division I freshmen in points with 36.[7] At the conclusion of his freshman season, Zegras was named to the Hockey East Third Team All-Star,[9] selected to Hockey East All-Rookie Team, and named a finalist for Hockey East Rookie of the Year.[10]
Professional
Edit
Zegras officially concluded his collegiate career on March 27, 2020, by signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Ducks.[11] Following the signing, Zegras was re-assigned to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the San Diego Gulls, to play out the remainder of the 2020–21 season.[12] On February 5, 2021, Zegras made his professional debut with Gulls and had one goal and two assists in a 4–1 win over the Bakersfield Condors.[13] He was eventually recalled to the NHL level in late February[12] and subsequently made his NHL debut against the Arizona Coyotes on February 22.[14] A few games later, on March 18, 2021, Zegras scored his first NHL goal against Adin Hill of the Arizona Coyotes in a 3–2 overtime win. During the same game, fellow rookie Jamie Drysdale also scored, making the teammates the youngest in NHL history to each score their first NHL goals less than 2:30 apart.[15] He finished the season with 13 points through 24 games, with six points coming in his final six regular-season games.[16]
Zegras was eventually returned to the AHL in April to aid in his development and transition to the professional league. When speaking of the re-assignment, executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Murray stated: "He's ahead of our scheduled progression, and as a result, we are moving him to center ice effective immediately. He will need some experience in the AHL first, but our expectation is that he will be back with us in the near future and play center for the Ducks for years to come."[17] Upon returning to the AHL, Zegras made the transition from left wing to center which resulted in an increased offensive output.[18]
During training camp prior to the 2021–22 season, Zegras continued to play the role of center[16] and was named to their opening night roster.[19] Zegras quickly became a mainstay on the Ducks lineup while playing alongside Sonny Milano and Rickard Rakell. On December 7, 2021, Zegras made a never seen before lacrosse-style assist to Sonny Milano in a game against the Buffalo Sabres.[20] By December, he had scored 22 points through 27 games to rank second amongst league rookies in scoring while also averaging 17:00 in ice time.[21] As a result of his play, Zegras was one of four Ducks players on the NHL All-Star Game fan vote ballot.[22] He was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for December 2021 after recording 11 points in nine games.[23] Although Zegras was not nominated for the 2022 All-Star Game, he was later named a special guest, participating in the Breakaway Challenge.[24] Zegras finished his first full season with 23 goals and 38 assists, and was named a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL's rookie of the year;[25] the award went to Moritz Seider.

Wheeling Nailers Re-Sign Peter Laviolette III
Tumblr media
The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce their first player signing of the 2023 offseason. Wheeling has re-signed forward Peter Laviolette III to an ECHL contract. Laviolette, 25, played his first professional season with the Nailers in 2022-23, and the Wheeling, West Virginia native hit things off immediately with the fans. Peter won the Project BEST Community Award, as he led the team with 12 community appearances. On the ice, Laviolette contributed five goals, six assists, and 11 points, while playing a physical style, which led to him finishing second on the club with 96 penalty minutes in 38 games. The forward's first career goal was definitely one to remember. The Nailers trailed the Reading Royals 5-3 after two periods in the annual New Year's Eve Game. Peter's goal at the 3:31 mark of the third lifted the roof off of WesBanco Arena and kickstarted a 6-5 victory for the home squad. Laviolette notched a pair of multi-goal games in March, and finished the campaign with points in five of eight contests. "Peter is exactly what we want a Nailer to be," said Nailers Head Coach Derek Army. "He plays hard, he loves this community, and he brings energy every day. We are excited to have him back!" Prior to turning pro, Peter played five years of college hockey at Plymouth State University, where he majored in Sport Management/Business Administration. During his time with the Panthers, Laviolette accumulated 35 goals, 32 assists, and 67 points in 105 games. His best collegiate season came in 2021-22, when he finished third on the team in scoring with nearly one point per game (26 points in 27 games). Plymouth State won the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament three times and the regular season championship four times with Peter on the squad. Laviolette III is one of three Wheeling natives to ever play for the Nailers, and he is the son of former Nailers Head Coach and Wheeling Hockey Hall of Famer Peter Laviolette Jr., who was recently named head coach of the NHL's New York Rangers. The Wheeling Nailers will open the 2023-24 season on the road against the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday, October 21st. The team's home opener is Saturday, November 4th against the Reading Royals at 7:10. Season memberships and other terrific ticket plans for the 2023-24 season are available now by calling (304) 234-GOAL. The Wheeling Nailers, considered one of the top things to do in Wheeling, West Virginia, provide affordable family entertainment for fans throughout the Ohio Valley. Read the full article

NHL expects 98% of players to be vaccinated before season, deputy commissioner Bill Daly says
12:22 PM CT September 16, 2021
(AP) Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Thursday the NHL expects 98% of players to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the start of the season.
The league projects that only between 10 to 15 of roughly 700 players will not be vaccinated by the time the season begins Oct. 12. The league and NHL Players' Association did not impose a vaccine mandate on players, but restrictions -- including the potential of not being able to cross the border from the U.S. into Canada without a lengthy quarantine -- contributed to the number.
"We weren't really trying to convince each other one way or the other," Los Angeles defenseman Drew Doughty said. "But then I think when the NHL released that statement that you lose pay and stuff like that, that kind of changed some guys' minds."
Teams will be able to suspend unvaccinated players without pay if they cannot participate in hockey activities as part of the protocols, which could include games in Canada since Daly confirmed there is no exception in this case for the country's quarantine rule. Fully vaccinated players will have any COVID-19 positives treated as hockey injuries and still be paid.
Unvaccinated players also will have their movements restricted when on the road. And there will still be regular coronavirus testing for vaccinated players.
"I think that's been an incentive and a motivator for most players to to become fully vaccinated, even if they had concerns about it," Daly told The Associated Press at the league's annual player media tour. "But it was intended to be that."
Three teams -- Calgary, Toronto and Carolina -- have confirmed all their players are vaccinated, and Philadelphia expects to be at 100% soon.
Coaches and staff must be vaccinated as a condition of employment. Columbus recently replaced assistant coach Sylvain Lefebvre because he declined to be vaccinated.

KK deserves more than 6mil for 1 year and there is no way Habs CAN'T match that. It was so low I thought it was a joke of an offer as petty revenge for the Aho one. Literally had a $20 signing bonus tf. With both teams picking up racists this is good PR frankly to excite fans.
Sorry, I actually disagree pretty solidly with almost all of this, but the reasons are complex and lengthy to explain, so I’m going to put it all under a cut.
Listen, I personally believe based on what we’ve seen from him in the playoffs that KK can eventually develop into a $6.1 million dollar player — it seemed like he did well once the team had been put through Ducharme’s mini-training camp before the playoffs that actually allowed the chance to cement his systems, and put up good numbers generally during the run for someone his age. If they can find a way to get that kind of stuff out of him in the regular season, he could very well be worth $6.1 or more down the road. I really truly think he has it in him with the right coaching and the right work put in.
The problem is, owing possibly to how the Habs have chosen to develop him (remember, he came to the NHL pretty much straight out of the draft) and how very young he actually is, he has not yet actually PROVEN that he can be a player of that value consistently for most of a season at any point. I’m willing to put an asterisk on his struggles this year, because it was a weird fucking season and the Habs had a rough go of it in several points, especially down the stretch, and because we’ve seen the ability is there in the playoffs. But given what we’ve seen while he’s been on his ELC, there has been no guarantee so far that a team that signs him to $6.1 million is going to get $6.1 million in value out of him this coming season.
Like, set aside league-wide valuations for a second, and think about what the Habs, based on their budgeting and philosophy and management choices, are paying some of their top foundational players right now in terms of cap hit. Toffoli makes $4.5 million, so will Hoffman. Anderson makes $5.5 million, as does Drouin. Petry makes $6.2 million. Edmundson makes $3.5 million. Jake Allen, a player so valuable to this team that we risked “Price to Seattle” to keep him, is $2.87 million against the cap. Gally, the lifeblood heart and soul of this team who has given his literal blood sweat and tears to it for almost a decade, only makes $6.5 million against the cap. They apparently weren’t even willing to offer Phillip Danault, defensive cornerstone of the playoff run, the $5.5 million he got from LA. With Weber on the LTIR, if KK signed with the Habs at $6.1 million, he would be the third-highest paid player on the active team when you exclude dudes named Carey Price (who is an outlier and should not be counted). I love the kid. I think he’ll be a bonafide star someday. He has NOT earned that kind of payday yet, based on the established scale of how the Habs reward their players.
Based on my amateur understanding of NHL contracts and the market, a reasonable deal with KK from the Habs would have been somewhere in the area of $2-3 million (so, what they pay for players like Lehkonen (2.3 mil) or Byron (3.3 mil) or just signed Armia to (3.4 mil)), for maybe about 2 years. By the time that runs out, he’d be 23 years old and heading into the prime of his career, and you would probably have a better idea of whether he’s made that big next step or not — if he has, you probably just got two years of great hockey out of him at a STEAL, and can at that point sign him for a nice juicy contract that will pay him to that level and lock him up through his prime years (which is what you would dangle to entice him to take the short deal for now). And if when that short deal is up he hasn’t made that next leap, then you either sign him back at what he is worth, or if that’s an impasse, part ways. He has said he wants to help bring a Cup to Montreal, and do it with the core of young guys they’re assembling (and close friends like the other Finns on the team) — with that, maybe some performance bonuses if he really kills it, and the promise of something bigger down the road once he proves himself (plus the knowledge that he might not get higher offers elsewhere because of how he’s struggled) you could probably get him to sign a deal like that with the Habs.
HOWEVER.
Now that he has signed this offer sheet, he WILL get $6.1 million. Not only for this year, but once the one-year deal expires, any extension offered to him by anyone is required to start at that number. Regardless of how he performs. Unless he has the breakout year of all breakout years, this will really screw him over — because if he DOESN’T perform to the $6.1 million level, a team (be it the Habs or the Canes) is not going to want to sign him to a second deal at that pricetag. He’ll have to go hunting as a free agent, or get traded before he expires and become another team’s problem. (Note: I’m not exactly sure if the offer sheet process allows Montreal to match with a contract at the same value but longer term, but that doesn’t really solve the problem of being locked-in at $6.1 million after next season even if they can). I understand why he signed the offer sheet — his career earnings so far total just over $2 million, and of course both he and his agent would jump at the chance to guarantee adding triple that in just one year, with the promise of more of the same on his next extension. I’m sure he probably thinks he’s worth it, or can prove he is worth it. He probably thinks the Habs believe in him enough to match it, too — I don’t think he wants to leave Montreal, but he probably sees this as simply an earlier achievement of what they would hopefully be paying him anyway someday, in his eyes.
But even if he DOES perform up to that level, if he remains on the Habs that creates another massive problem crunching up against the salary cap: Nick Suzuki and Jake Evans are both RFA’s at the end of the 2021-22 season, and THEY will be looking for their “grown-up” contracts at that time, the SAME time KK will need to be signed again. Nick is probably going to develop into the better player between him and KK (look at where he already is right now), so even if KK performs excellently next year as say 2C, Nick looks like he will be even better at 1C — and if I’m Nick’s agent, I’m definitely starting my contract negotiations with what the Habs would be paying KK as my absolute lowest starting figure, if not higher. Jake probably has more of a 3C/4C upside, but if KK struggles and plays at a 3C/4C performance level and Jake does that well or better, then if I’m Jake Evans’ agent I am definitely putting my starting figure for negations right around $6.1 million, because I can argue “well, you’re paying Kotkaniemi that much, why not my client?”. Romanov is due up for his post-ELC RFA deal after next year too — because he’s more of a defensive defenceman who isn’t expected to score much, he likely can’t command the kind of figures that an offensively productive centre does, but you still need to have enough cap space to actually sign the guy for what he’s worth; Romanov is eligible for arbitration in that negotiation, so lowballing him too hard could get complicated and contentious fast. And all of this isn’t even including factors like depth players on one-year deals who will need to be replaced or brought back after this year, etc.
Accepting/matching this contract creates a dozen new problems the Habs didn’t have before at all. It carries massive risk and could cause problems for the cap and for roster construction even if KK takes off like a rocket and lives up to the figure on the sheet. I didn’t even touch on the absolute hell the fanbase and media will put him through if he is in Montreal on that kind of payday compared to the rest of the team and fails to live up to it. Alex Galchenyuk only made $4.5 million while he was here and struggling. Look how that turned out for him. You’ve seen how people get when Carey has a rough patch, how the $10.5 million gets brought up and thrown around, and that’s with Carey goddamn Price. I have been around this fanbase long enough to see what happens when people don’t feel you’ve lived up to your pricetag. It gets nasty. Think whatever you’ve seen hurled at Mitch Marner this year, then multiplied by a factor of “fanbase whose expectations have been disproportionately raised probably beyond what’s realistic by the miracle playoff run” and “the Montreal hockey media eats people alive even in good years”. He has been lucky so far in his struggles because he’s still young enough to be cheap. And I’ve still seen plenty of people already writing him off anyway.
Make no mistake: I love KK, I love what he brings to the team, I love how he fits in with the rest of the young core and their dynamics, and I really believe he has the potential to break out into a formidable 2C lowkey-superstar. And I was really, really looking forward to hopefully watching that growth and achievement happen with the Habs, as part of the super exciting future that has been building here. I will be heartbroken if this leads to him leaving, genuinely. My biggest worry with having this bright and shiny new core was always that I would have to watch it get torn apart and turn sad just like the last one.
But now that this contract, right now, at this point in his career is going to be the price of keeping him? I don’t know if matching it will be what’s best for the team as a whole, or even what is best for KK. I don’t know if Carolina actually gives a shit about him as a player enough to use and develop him right if they keep him, or what their end goal here even is other than definitely very literally getting petty revenge for the Aho thing, just look at their Twitter (I think the idea of this as DeAngelo counter-PR has become a bit overblown as an explanation, because surely they MUST know they could end up holding the tab for this and all the risk of it in the end, and that this will die down eventually, so either they’re incredibly stupid or there’s some other benefit here).
And regardless of which way everything goes, I can’t think of anyone I trust less to make the best choice for everyone involved than Marc fucking Bergevin.
