#PHnews: 3 cities, 3 provinces in E. Visayas reopen to tourists

TACLOBAN CITY – At least three cities and three provinces in Eastern Visayas have opened their doors to domestic tourists after a year-long movement restriction due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

Based on the advisory released by the Department of Tourism (DOT) regional office Friday, these areas have reopened to regional and domestic tourists following the National Inter-Agency Task Force Resolution No. 101 uniformed protocols for land, air, and sea travels.

These areas include Biliran, Southern Leyte, and Eastern Samar provinces; Catbalogan City in Samar, Tacloban City in Leyte, and Maasin in Southern Leyte, said DOT Eastern Visayas regional director Karina Rosa Tiopes.

Requirements for the entry of tourists vary for each province and city.

In Biliran, regional and domestic tourists who would want to visit the place would need to present a valid identification card (ID), and have to undergo health assessments upon arrival in the province.

Those who will stay for 24 hours or longer have to present proof of booking from an accommodation facility or proof of sponsorship from a Biliran resident where he or she would stay.

Those without proof of booking will be facilitated by the tourism assistance booth at the provincial border.

Biliran province takes pride in its tourist destinations such as the Sambawan Island in Maripipi Island, the shifting sand and the sunken chapel at Higatangan Island, and various waterfalls like the Tinago and Tomalistis Falls in Caibiran town, and the Ulan-ulan and Recoletos Falls in Almeria.

The province has also DOT-accredited farm-tourism sites such as SofTea Garden in Bato village, Biliran town, and Canaan Hill Farm and Honey Garden in Uson village in Caibiran.

For Southern Leyte province, requirements include valid ID, Southern Leyte QR Code, and health assessment upon arrival.

The province is popular for its diving sites located along Sogod Bay. These dive sites stretch from the town of Macrohon to the historic island town of Limasawa, then across to the towns of San Francisco and Pintuyan in Panaon Island.

Another popular destination in the province is the twin islands of San Pedro and San Pablo in Hinunangan town.

Those who want to visit Eastern Samar should present their valid ID to explore their popular tourist destination such as Calicoan Island, Sulangan Island for pilgrims, Minasangay Eco-Park in Balangkayan town, Canhugas Nature Park and Guinduyanan Cove in Hernani town, and Divinubo and Ando Island in Borongan City.

In Catbalogan City, visitors are required to show valid ID, local QR code, and health assessment upon arrival.

Catbalogan, the capital of Samar, is known for waterfalls, caves, and beaches.

In Tacloban, requirements include valid ID, local QR code, and health assessment upon arrival.

Attraction in the city includes the San Juanico Bridge, the Yolanda Memorial Sites, and Sto. Niňo Shrine, Price Mansion, and the Leyte Provincial Capitol.

Some of the top hotel or accommodation facilities and restaurants are also located in the city.

A local cruise operator in the city also offers a sunset excursion at the San Juanico Bridge via boat ride.

In Maasin City, requirements include local QR Code, valid ID, and health assessment upon arrival.

Must-see destinations in the city are pilgrims’ sites such as the Monte Cueva Shrine, Our Lady of Assumption Statue, and the Maasin Cathedral built in the 1700s.

“To give due consideration to the new carrying capacity, we highly advise that a pre-booking be secured through the provincial and city tourism offices before traveling,” Tiopes stated in the advisory.

The contact number of provincial and city tourism officers are posted on their official Facebook pages and DOT Eastern Visayas social media account.

Tiopes added that Leyte, Northern Samar, and Samar are not yet included in the list as they have not yet issued executive orders for the entry protocols and on allowing tourists to enter their respective provinces. (PNA)

No entendíamos el mundo y menos, lo que sucedía en la tierra, cambiabamos de pantalla a veces obligados y otras por necesidad, con la empatia en manos del vacío y la mirada ausente del presente. Queríamos volar, desaparecer sin dejar rastro, con la inocencia de un niňo y la ilusión que nunca muere. Pero hay estábamos, rodeados de todos esos humanos y toda esa vida, encontrándonos una vez más en el rincón más bonito del mundo, nuestra sonrísa. Ici, la Chose peut se transférer de corps en corps, se nourrir des mémoires de ses victimes et les imiter... mais elle est psychique davantage que physique. Film culte autant que bizarroïde... Les noms et la structure narratives restent identique. Cependant, la bande dessinée est rapide et bâclée, à la limite du résumé, oubliant des épisodes marquants tels que celui des vaches. WHO GOES THERE? 1978 Scénario de William F. Nolan Un script jamais adapté, mais qui a été publié dans la réédition Rocket Ride de la nouvelle d'origine. Nolan change beaucoup de choses, réduisant le nombre d'humains (ce qu'on retrouvera dans le film de Carpenter) et en faisant les proies d'un trio d'extraterrestres qui sautent d'hôte en hôte, laissant derrière eux des enveloppes vides. Cette version est évidemment très différente du script de 1982, elle tient davantage du polar surnaturel que de la paranoïa. THE THING 1982 Roman d'Alan Dean Foster Novélisation du film de Carpenter. Comme la plupart des produits de ce type, l'ouvrage de Foster a été écrit pour accompagner la sortie du long métrage. Rompu à l'exercice (il aura aussi fait, entre autres, les novélisations d'Alien et AlienS), Foster adapte superbement l’œuvre. Quelques scènes sont différentes du film, et le final héroïque au chasse-neige est directement basé sur celui de Lancaster. THE THING [PREQUEL] 2009 Scénario de Ronald D. Moore À la fin des années 2000, sous la pression d'un duo de producteurs amoureux de l'horreur, Universal s'est lancé dans une préquelle au film de 1982. C'est Moore qui écrira la première version de l'histoire du camp norvégien. Il évoquera son traitement en quelques mots à IGN ( https://www.ign.com/articles/2009/03/18/exclusive-moore-talks-the-thing ), expliquant qu'il ne s'agit pas de faire un remake, mais un "compagnon" à l’œuvre de Carpenter. THE THING 2010 Scénario d'Eric Heisserer Une réécriture complète de l'histoire de Moore. Heisserer change beaucoup de choses, traque impitoyablement les possibles incohérences, resserre les liens qui rattachent la préquelle à The Thing 1982, et se documente amplement sur les questions scientifiques. C'est à lui que l'on doit l'accès à la soucoupe volante via un tunnel transversal, par exemple. Se rattachant au film de 1982, il propose une autre continuité pour les évènements du camp norvégien. Radicalement différent de la version de Heisserer, et beaucoup plus inventif, ce livre constitue une continuité alternative. TACLOBAN CITY – The towns of Guiuan in Eastern Samar and Limasawa in Southern Leyte are now ready for the quincentennial commemoration of the Philippines this March.

With more than two weeks to go, the local government unit of Guiuan is now ready for hosting the opening of the celebration of the quincentennial events of the Philippines.

In a virtual press briefing Monday, Mayor Annaliz Gonzalez-Kwan said the celebration will start on March 14 until March 18.

“Guiuan is the host for the opening of the series of events for the commemoration of the quincentennial starting this March and will end in 2022 in Surigao,” she said.

Highlights of the events in Guiuan are the unveiling of three quincentennial markers located at Monay Beach, Calicoan Island on March 16, Suluan Island on March 17, and Magellan’s site in Pagbabangnan village, Homonhon Island on March 18.

Also part of the activities in Guiuan is the arrival of the Spanish Training Ship, Juan Sebastian Elcano, on March 16.

On March 17, activities will be held in Homonhon Island. These include thanksgiving mass at the Magellan’s Site in Pagbabangnan and St. John the Baptist Parish Church in Casuguran village. It will be followed by the quincentennial lecture in the afternoon with Dr. Ambeth Ocampo of Ateneo de Manila University in Homonhon Island on March 17.

Kwan said President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to lead the unveiling of the Quincentennial Historical Marker in Calicoan Island on March 16.

Invited guests and spectators will be limited and will be screened prior to entering the venue as part of the health protocols against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

During the first circumnavigation of the globe, the fleet of Ferdinand Magellan after several months of crossing the Pacific Ocean first saw the landmass of Suluan Island but did not land there. They waited for the next morning and landed at Homonhon Island which was uninhabited at that time on March 16, 1521, which he named Las Islas de San Lázaro.

March 16 to 18 are significant dates in the history of the quincentennial celebration.

It was on March 16, 1521, when Magellan’s fleet, composed of the ships Concepcion, Trinidad, and Victoria, sighted the island of Suluan.

On March 17, Magellan’s fleet landed in Homonhon Island, and on the next day, March 18, they first met the residents of Suluan who provided them food and shared with them the names of the neighboring islands.

During their two weeks stay in Homonhon, they gathered fresh foods and water before leaving on March 27, and on the following day, he was seen by the boats of Rajah Culambo of Limasawa.

Meanwhile, the Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Charles John Brown will grace the quincentennial celebration in Limasawa Island, according to Rey Martin Reoma, media officer of the Diocese of Maasin.

Brown will be the main celebrant for the Eucharist on the celebration of the First Easter Sunday Mass on March 31, 2021.

The alter-ego of Pope Francis and his entourage are expected to arrive on the early morning of March 31 at the Maasin Airport, the same time that the pilgrim image of the Sto. Niňo de Cebu will dock at the Maasin Port.

Brown will be joined by Manila-based and Cebu-based visitors on the vessel that will carry the Sto. Niňo to Limasawa Island.

Upon his arrival at the island, his first activity will be to enshrine the Sto. Niňo de Limasawa image at the Roman Catholic Church in Triana village.

After which, they will proceed to Magallanes village where he will celebrate a Mass and the launching of the 500 Years of Christianity that will run until next year.

“Supposed to be this is the peak of the celebration, but because of the pandemic, this was moved for a year. We will start celebrating on March 31 this year and will culminate on March 31 next year,” Reoma said.

Only 500 individuals are allowed to participate in the event in compliance with the health protocols set by the government to avoid the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Reoma added that pilgrims who will be allowed to enter the island are reminded not to act as tourists and to stay in their designated areas.

Participants who are not residents of Limasawa will not be allowed to stay overnight in the island and must leave after the program around lunchtime.

Residents of Southern Leyte who will be allowed to enter the island will have to present barangay (village) certificates prior to their entry to Limasawa while those coming from outside the province must present a barangay certificate, health certificate, and letter of acceptance from Southern Leyte Governor Damian Mercado.

Almost eight months before the celebration of the Quincentennial Commemoration of the Philippines, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines has reaffirmed previous pronouncements that indeed the first Easter Sunday Mass was held in Limasawa.

This after pro-Limasawa proponents were able to present solid evidence that indeed the First Easter Sunday Mass was held on the island.

Among those who presented evidence to the panel was Eastern Visayas resident historian and University of the Philippines Professor Rolando Borrinaga.

The first documented Catholic Mass in the Philippines was held on March 31, 1521. It was celebrated by Father Pedro de Valderrama along the shores of what was referred to in the journals of Antonio Pigafetta as "Mazaua". (PNA)
