I think Nicky does piss Andrew off, but not because he's loud and dramatic; because he cares.

Nicky cares, and Andrew can't fathom why. When Nicky agreed to come back to be their legal guardian, he barely knew Aaron and had never even met Andrew before. But he put his own needs and happiness aside for the sake of 'family'. Even when they hurt Nicky, emotionally or physically, Nicky never turned his back on them. Out of everyone, Nicky stayed; he didn't even need a deal. He stayed without being asked or demanding anything in return.

Nicky is likely the best parent Andrew has ever had. An eighteen year old with his own trauma and no idea how to be a good parent to two utterly broken teenagers. Part of him is, of course, grateful but the injustice that this wreck of a boy only three years his senior being the best, most successful and most caring guardian Andrew ever had would make him—justifiably, I think—pissed off.

Nicky Hemmick's trauma responses are more subtle than the other Foxes. Next to Andrew, who lashes out when he's touched without consent and Aaron snaps at people with vigor, Nicky looks normal in comparison.

Just because they're subtler, doesn't mean they're not there. He always hides his phone/book/magazine when someone comes into the room. Its immediate, unthinking to shove it under his thigh or the pillow behind him because at one point that was all that was between him and Luther finding reason to look through his things. He hesitates for a few seconds, not enough to be noticeable to most, before he eats, waiting, inevitably, for someone to start a prayer. He gets nervous when people are too calm for the situation, he needs noise and energy to know that no one is mad at him. He overshares whenever he tells stories because for so, so long he had to keep everything he loved under wraps in fear of his parents taking it away. Now he has years worth of stories and experiences he never got to tell anyone out of fear-hatred-not being safe and he just wants everyone to know. Though, sometimes, he finds himself falling back into those patterns of keeping details close to his chest. He'll repeat the same stories over and over again and completely forget to mention others. It an unthinking notation, one that he forged to keep him safe even when his mouth ran a mile a minute in front of Luther. His personality—outwardly at least—is a result of this too. He's free now, and he gets to be flamboyant and loud where he never could be before. He won't forget that privilege.

Anyways i think we should explore Andrew’s misogyny and we should explore Nicky kissing Neil without the latter’s consent and we should explore Aaron and Jack’s homophobia and we should explore Neil’s selfishness and we should explore Kevin’s bitchiness and we, actually, should explore all these negative trauma responses instead of screaming and wailing and erasing them. Fruit.

I don't know why, but for some reason, I always think that Nicky and Aaron grew up together. But they didn't.

They grew up on opposite sides of the country, over two thousand miles apart. Aaron didn’t move to South Carolina until he was around 13, and Nicky was 16. Then Nicky moved to Germany less than a year later.

They would have barely known each other. Nicky said himself that he was too depressed to pay Aaron any mind when he moved to Columbia. And he'd never even met Andrew before Tilda died.

But he still came back. He came back to a place and a family that had almost been the end of him, for a boy he hardly knew, and another that he absolutely didn't.
