I don't know much about The Great Gatsby other than I saw a video on Nick Carroway being possibly gay, including this scene and I saw a quote about Holden loves The Great Gatsby so I thought this would be his reaction to this scene in particular scene

Gatsby
So here I am at home on a cold Sunday afternoon, watching the 1974 version of "The Great Gatsby" and whenever Nick and Gatsby have a scene together by themselves, I end up yelling at the screen, "Kiss him, you moron."
Both Daisy and her husband were garbage. If Nick and Gatsby had had any sense, they wouldn't have gotten within a mile of them.

i think i don’t know what “unreliable narrator” means actually. someone on tiktok just said my buddy richard was one and i was like babe i thought his life was just crazy he’s not lying to me he’s just in an insane situation… while gay. was i supposed to interpret that book as though he was lying? wait how does that even make sense how would i know if he was lying he’s the only one there. can someone explain this i really think i don’t know what an unreliable narrator is

More dangerous than fiendfyre, there was a sickness to the idealization of people. Everyone Ron had ever watched fall ill with this phenomenon had had a fatal case. Walking through the mausoleum, though, one name in particular would always stand out to him. Pansy Parkinson. — When Ron moved next door to the biggest party spot in Godric's Hollow, he never expected it to turn his worldview on its head.

question
is Nick Carroway supposed to read as, like, smitten? every time he says something about Gatsby positively it reads like he's fuckin struck by him, like
"He smiled understandingly—much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced—or seemed to face—the whole eternal world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favour. It understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey."
holy hell

Want to clarify the definition of "protagonist"
it's the Leading Character. being part of the main cast does not make them the protagonist. [the Main 6 from My Little Pony are main characters, but Twilight Sparkle is the protagonist)
It can be the character that we see the world from (like video game protagonists that you play as [Red, Akira Kurusu, Frisk]) and learn information with (Madoka, Denji)
but it might not be (Nick Carroway is the narrator, but Jay Gatsby is the protagonist) (Lemony Snicket is the narrator of Series of Unfortunate Events, but the Baudelaire's are the protagonists)
A character might be followed for one or two episodes in a show, but if the wider plot is focused on another character, then I wouldn't count them as a protagonist. If a character leads an entire arc we can maybee discuss it
if you're unsure if a character counts, submit them anyway or send them in an ask so we (me+anyone else that wants to comment) can discuss)

this is EMBARRASSING to ask but does anyone fucking know this fic i read back in high school? it was a nick carroway/jay gatsby fic (natsby). i think it was an alternative take where gatsby didn’t die and nick maybe took the bullet instead (he doesn’t die because of that). anyways so they fall in love or something and spend their lives together and during the course of the story i think tom and daisy’s daughter is found to be a lesbian and intersex(? not sure about that part but im pretty sure it’s maybe just alluded to and not explicitly stated) so she moves in with nick and jay (i also think they’ve moved at this point to Somewhere Else). ANYWAYS the one quote i remember from it is “I’m wild for you” and i think that is said during a Love Scene by Jay. i read the fic on AO3 back in the day after we had to read and watch the great gatsby for a class. i just want to read it again lol.

In the Great Gatsby, Nick Carroway often chooses inaction when it comes to Daisy and Gatsby’s affair, opting to watch from the sidelines as the ship crashes and burns.
Ironically enough, most of the novella occurs simply because Nick shows up, and then is pushed further along because he chose to not do anything. I’ve heard “background character to your own story” thrown about for him, and I nearly think it’s fitting.
The first look the reader, and Nick, see of Gatsby is of a silhouette reaching towards the green light. However the reader chooses to interpret this scene changes how the story is framed. In my own mind, he is reaching towards an unmoving idealized version of Daisy from 5 years prior. Nick, while he did decide to speak to him, isn’t given the chance after some hesitation.
Meeting Myrtle, and everything else that happened in the Valley of Ashes, came to because while he protested many times, Nick didn’t leave until 4 in the morning. To be fair to him, everything in this chapter would have happened regardless. He happened to be there because he couldn’t hold true to his inhibitions.
Nick then chooses to not attend Gatsby’s parties without a proper invite, granting the titular character a segue into getting to know him better. Going out together as an apology gave Gatsby the privacy to talk of his intentions, if only vaguely.
Gatsby’s plan of getting in touch with Daisy would not have worked with just Jordan, as there would be no common meeting ground (Nick’s small bungalow) without prying eyes. He needed Nick involved somehow. Again, he protested plenty, but didn’t leave until after dark.
Nearly every chapter only continues as Nick, the catalyst of this story, never truly tried to stop anything.
This all culminates in the final chapters. Nick doesn’t stop the group’s split drive to New York, he doesn’t try to stop the argument of where Daisy’s love lies, and finally, he doesn’t do much to get Gatsby out of his mansion. I won’t say he knew what was to happen, but Nick knew something was amiss.
