Just finished "Bright", and let me tell you - I can understand where all this fuss comes from, but my stupid ass likes the movie a bit too much nonetheless.
Also, they made Nick this innocent, adorable, friendly cinnamon roll, which I absolutely love

Nick Jakoby x Tikka
Some time ago I read a pretty good smut fic about this ship, and it was so good that I wrote two extended scenes of the fic, though I never shared them on the internet.
Anyway, if you like well written cute and spicy short stories (6k words one shot), and if you ship these two or find any of them adorable and hot, don't pass on this fic!
Nick is such a sweet character (and he is so hot!), and Tikka was cute (hot too). They are so shippable. I wanted that stupid bad movie to have a sequel only to have more of these two!

Orcs and Demons
I saw bright for the first time 2 days ago and now I’m obsessed with Jakoby <3
9:00pm
The typing on my computer became more and more irritating, my leg bounced impatiently as my report felt like it was becoming longer and longer even though it was just an assault case at a gas station, some guy coked up on fairy dust, thankfully only left scratches, being an EMT is stressful enough.
Busting through my office, one of my EMT’s abruptly commands “We gotta go now! Domestic attack” I dropped my pen and laced up my belt swiftly. As the ambulance was packed me hoped in and sped off, “hey, you got a hair tie?” I asked slightly turning my head from the wheel.
“Yeah, here” she handed me the tie “What happened at the scene?” I hope it’s nothing serious, I don’t know If I could handle it right now, with my bills starting to pile up, finishing school and needing to get rid of the stack of paper work on my desk, It feels like the bones at the arch of my back are melting.
“Schizophrenic elf forgot to take his pills and lashed out on his fiancé, the responder said she’s hiding in a closet somewhere in the house, they also said she has some cuts, deep bruising and swelling to the face and head, maybe concussing injuries” she explained.
Quickly making a right turn and reaching for my intercom “Are the cops at the crime scene yet?” there was scratchy response “No, you should meet there at the same time” I uttered a thank you and pointed to the back of the ambulance “Get the bag ready for head trauma”.
When we arrived, a cop car pulled up quickly and two tall men stepped out, a tall black man and a slightly shorter Orc, wait... Orc? How the fuck did they let an Orc into the police force!? Shut up and focus! There’s a hurt woman inside, just let the police escort us inside to help so we can all go home.
I jump out the back with the small medical bag, “You!” I pointed to the black man, quickly catching his attention “You come with me to the front, Orc you take back” they stopped in their tracks with a questioning look ‘Your telling us what to do?” the human guy asked. I was already half way up the walk way,
“do you two want to sit here crying with your thumbs up your asses all night or do you want to save this girl?” The human looks at the Orc and he just shrugs and runs to the back, pistol and flashlight drawn.
I quickly read the officer’s name tag, Ward, I followed behind him to the door. His fist pounded the door in urgency, even though it was a loud knock, it was pitch black and dead silent on the inside.
“Maybe it was a false call?” Ward says, “Or maybe he’s keeping her quiet? Or maybe he already got her and he’s gone? Or-” “alright alright- I get it” He quickly draws his gun, and tried the knob. Nothing. “Step back sweetheart” I snarled my teeth at his pet name and my stomach soured.
He speaks into his intercom “Hey Jakoby, no one’s answering the door, I’m persisting” “10-4, coming through back”, he kicks the door in, small pieces of wood falling as the door flies open. He looks back at me “Stay in arms reach” I quickly nod and we enter the dark house.
As we walk I flip the light switches on....

Kandomere X OC (Liren) Pt. 8
Tumblr media
The conversation with Kandomere had gone better, easier, than expected. He'd been disappointed, Liren could tell, but hadn’t asked any questions, to which she was very thankful. Liren didn’t want to have to explain that her boyfriend was going through some kind of mating haze and she’d be busy boning all week. She didn’t want to make things weird again. It seemed she had a habit of doing just that; except for when it was the two of them. They got along rather well when it was just them and they’d ended things on such a good note when he’d left.
She found herself thinking of Kandomere often that week. Only because she wondered about the progress he and Montehugh were making without her, because even with her help they weren’t getting very far. They’re probably chained to a desk, catching up to all that paperwork, she snickered. They could at least call. Liren kinda missed the mismatched duo; especially the big man, her morning just didn’t feel right anymore without their daily banter. Sure she had Mikey, but he was too busy sticking his tongue down her throat, and his dick in her to hold much of a conversation.
Kandomere would frown at her in that way he does and give her some great one-word of advice about the situation. Probably, “Daniels,” with a nicely arched eyebrow for effect. It didn’t take much from him to set her mind off in all directions at top speed. She was still digesting some of the things they’d talked about the other night. Like how he was a half elf, like Elrond. She’d eyed him enough that she should have been able to figure that out for herself, but it wasn’t always his ears that she stared at. He’d shown them to her that night. They were perfectly pointed elf ears, she’d told him so, but their shape was just slightly different, a bit wider than most. At least from the ones she’d seen up close before. In the brief moment that she’d seen them, his ears seemed softer, not quite as sharp.
She’d learned quite a bit about him and how he viewed himself. It was the way he spoke. He held a certain respect for his grandmother, even if he himself didn’t adhere to her high expectations. And he spoke of his sisters with a bit of exasperated affection that only a brother could. Liren had forgotten to ask their names and how old they were. I bet they are stunning. How old was Kandomere? She had really wanted to ask if their hair was blue too but held her tongue. It would be rude to ask now but next time, it was on her list of questions to tick off about the elf. How old had his father been when he died? She would have liked to meet him, he sounded like a badass, and rather charming from the things Kandomere had told her about him. His father had met his mother at some stuffy fundraiser that they’d both been bored out of their minds at, and they’d ditched the party halfway through the event. Kandomere’s grandmother must have been furious. That was one of the stories Kandomere had shared, and she hoped he’d tell her more some time. It was nice to be reminded that he was just a person too, with his own baggage and drama. He wasn’t flawless like she painted him in her head. They’d talked for a lot longer than she realized.
It was after eleven when Mikey had turned up. Her orc had been reluctant about coming back but he caved and nearly mauled her after dropping his bag at the door. It had been quite the night, between her two gentlemen callers that evening. Mikey had been the one to wear her out. He’d kept her up late into the night almost every night this week and she was becoming desperate for sleep. Uninterrupted sleep. In her bed. Alone. That would be great. She stifles another yawn as tears prick her tired eyes. Now, Liren was sitting in her kitchen sipping a cup of coffee, while Mikey was pretending not to be making goo goo eyes at her from across the room. She sends him a small smile and shakes her head knowingly. “You’ll wear me out before lunch if you keep it up hound dog,” she teases. Mikey has the audacity to look hurt after the dirty things he’d whispered in her ear not even 5 minutes ago, before letting her escape to the kitchen for her morning dose of caffeine. Liren takes her seat beside him and wonders aloud about breakfast. Mikey, the ever sweet orc that he is, says he’d like her, to which Liren responds that she isn’t on the menu till there’s something hot in her belly. Queue another raunchy remark from him…
“I could-”
Liren points a finger at him and scowls, “Don’t finish that sentence. Food now, or else.”
“Yes ma’am.”
Thirty minutes later the pair returned from a food run and tore into the haul. Mikey’s phone had been buzzing in his pocket, had been for several minutes now, and Liren lifts a brow in its direction. Mikey takes it out and glances at it before he tosses it on the table. She briefly wonders if its Fogteeth related but shut that thought down before it gets too far. She doesn’t really want to know. It would probably upset her and she’d promised Dorghu she’d stay out of it a long time ago. It was something that always bothered her but Dorghu had kept up his end of the deal thus far and so would she. “It’s just my dad checking in. Making sure you're alright.” Speak of the devil.
I’m touched? “I wasn’t aware he cared that much. I mean you know we have our own arrangement, he and I, but that’s sweet in a way I guess.”
Mikey snorts, “He likes you. Not nearly as much as I do but that’s a given.”
“Your a fucking cavity Michael.” Mikey tickles her side and she pinches his arm in retaliation. The playfulness leaves his eyes as a familiar heated look takes its place. “No, no, you let me finish eating or there will be hell to pay,” she warns, swatting away his grabbing hands.
“Better hurry then.” Liren pauses. He’s been a lot more dominant with her this week, not that she minds. It’s nice to be able to hand the reins over from time to time. There's a few other things she’s noticed as well: he seems more relaxed since their conversation the other day, he doesn’t go down on her everytime now. Which is fine, she wouldn’t want him to feel pressured, but it is kind of a bummer, and temperature wise he’s been running a lot hotter than normal. That latest development makes snuggling at night almost unbearable for her. And that’s all Mikey wants to do is touch her, hold her, even when he’s sleeping. It’s cute. Or at least it was at first but it's a little suffocating. She’s been cranking the A/C up at night and praying that it holds up against the constant abuse. As if on queue a warm hand caresses Liren’s kneecap and makes its way up the inside of her leg. Bold move Michael. Liren takes one last sip of her drink before hot lips replace it and follow the line of her jaw.
“I could do this all day,” he whispers, sending hot breath across her skin. Mikey draws back to look at her when she laughs.
“We’ve been doing this all week,” Liren reminds him with a flat teasing tone.
“Never gets old,” he says. There’s a brief moment when Liren thinks that it could. She’s enjoyed all the attention of course, in and out of the bedroom. She should have listened to Mikey when he said that “it” was a lot. She hadn’t laid back and taken it, well a few times she had, and enjoyed it quite a lot. But she’d had to stop Mikey a few times because her vagina just couldn’t take it anymore and she’d watch him try to make a discrete trip to the shower where he’d jerk off till the next time the need struck him. She almost felt bad for him. Almost but not quite. She’d joined him a few times. He was quite pitiful like a sad orc puppy or something. His blue balls weren’t going to kill him. Though from his moping you’d think it would. The sex was great and they’d definitely gotten closer having shared the same space over the course of the week and spending every second together. Mikey looked at her like she held up the sun and the moon. And she had to remind him that she could never reach that kind of potential, “I would cave under that kind of pressure.”
Mikey bumps his head to hers and pinches her cheek. “You're a diamond.” Liren scoffs and pokes him in the side. “You're practically perfect in every way.”
Liren gives him a goofy smile. “Mary Poppins?” The orc returns her cheesy laugh and spins her around while singing ‘A Spoon Full of Sugar’. This is what  she loves about him. The silliness and his ability to make her laugh. She knew that he would do anything for her. That’s just the kind of guy that he was. Helpful to a fault. She really couldn’t have found a better companion.
It was Friday and Liren was ready to get out of the house asap. She and Mikey had gone out for food a few times, drive thru mostly, because he’d nearly bitten the head off of some guy that had bumped into her that last time they’d been in line. The poor guy hadn’t meant to of course, hadn’t been paying attention. He was smaller than her and Mikey had loomed over him like the fucking grim reaper. So she suggested that he remain in solitary confinement if he couldn’t play nice with the other kids. She didn’t want to babysit him when they went out. It had been a fun week but she was ready for it to come to an end. It felt almost honeymoon-esque; Liren and Mikey had stayed in their own little bubble and no one had bothered to pop it. It was strange. It made her miss Gemma and Nick. It had been ages since they had all gotten together and just hung out. She made a mental note to set it up. I might even invite Kandomere. Gemma would love that. Liren grinned to herself as she pictured it. Nick sitting obviously unaware of Gemma making goo goo eyes at the elf. While the elf made goo goo eyes at whatever confessionary treat Liren made that evening. Liren snickering from the sidelines. Liren liked the idea of it, of him there with the people she cared about. But she wasn’t sure where Mikey fit into it because there would be a fight if she put those two in a confined space together. A frown etched itself on Lirens mouth. She wished that they could get along. Mikey was one of her favorite people and Kandomere was… Kandomere. She’d added him to that group as well.
Not all her time had been spent in the sack. She’d managed to get a few things taken care of at the nursery during her time off from working with the Feds, and fucking her lust riddled boyfried, and was feeling good. While Mikey slept, she would sneak out of the house to take a walk of the grounds, her bare feet padding over the soft pathways. The place looked great. Just like she left it. She and Gemma ran a well oiled machine. It was a comforting thought that they could run things without her there. It made her a little sad that they’d fared so well without her but proud at the same time. The staff had been keeping the grounds nice and tidy, so she found little odds and ends to fiddle with in the meantime. Anything but paperwork. It was relaxing to be out in the dirt again, using her powers here and there, to give it her own special touch. It took the edge off of her restlessness, soothing something deep inside her. Everything was still in bloom, colorful, and fragrant. It was a beautiful array of colorful chaos just how she liked it. It's how she liked to picture the inside of her mind looking like. She was a metaphorical perennial, she’d always come back in the spring. And the place would still be waiting for her when she got back, so there was no reason to feel like it wouldn’t be. Liren trails her fingers over the bark of her favorite trees and caresses the petals of her favorite flowers, refamiliarizing herself with them as she passes by. She had to enjoy them while she could before winter came and all the color faded. It always made her a bit sad when the flowers went into hibernation, but they needed their rest too.
In truth she was feeling a little over used. She was over sexed and ready for her sleep schedule to return to its semi normal rhythm. Mikey had been pouring so much affection on her this week she’d felt like it was giving her a stomachache. Feeling like a child that has had too much candy whilst trick or treating. She was like one of those shiny lollipops in the wrapper that kids loved so much . She’d lost her wrapper, been eaten, and all that was left was the stick. The soggy stick that needed to go into the trash… Mikey’s stick, god what miracle it was that the thing was still functioning. Maybe he was the stick and she was the crumpled wrapper. It wasn’t to say that she was tired of the sugary behavior per say, but she was glad that the hormone fueled lust had slowed down.
In his defense, Mikey had been just as helpful as he always was around the place; in between bouts of lovemaking when they both needed a breather, helping her garden and lugging all the heavy stuff. She could do it of course but she appreciated that he wanted to do it. Liren confessed that she liked to watch him lug around those heavy bags of mulch and when he bent over to pick up something she’d dropped on ‘accident’.. Mikey would smirk at her and puff himself up like a proud peacock. After her admission to him, if they were working in one of the green houses, she always managed to wind up bent over one of the work tables and filthier than she’d planned to be just doing some light garden work. Fun, but not very productive. She didn’t mind. Not really…
Tonight was the last night of Mikey and Liren’s sleepover. She would be sad to see him go. It had been nice having someone else in the house, and he was a surprisingly clean house guest, for a male. Having come from a big family it was comforting to have someone else in it. It made her feel less lonely and more at ease. But… he had to go home. Her vagina needed rest. And he’d said that he was feeling like he was back to his normal self, “well as normal as I can be having been in heaven all week,” Liren made a gagging noise in the back of her throat and Mikey blushed.
Mikey comes up behind her to peck her exposed neck, one of his tusks grazing her skin. Liren shivers and bumps her head against his in return. He holds it in place for a moment, to breathe her scent in; she’s learned. One of his new favorite forms of showing affection. “Jirak I’m going to miss this. Having you all to myself.” She knows what he means but the first thing, the first person to come to her mind is Kandomere. Instant guilt washes over her. She almost opens her mouth to beg him not to start anything with the elf tomorrow but bites her tongue not wanting to ruin the moment. It's better not to say his name. Liren wraps an arm around Mikey’s neck and bumps his nose with hers.
“I’m glad you came back.” She meant it. This had been good for them. It might still be a little messy but it had been good.
He chuckles and rubs the back of his neck, suddenly embarrassed. “Well, you’re very persuasive. How could I not?”
Liren snorts and shoves him off, climbs beneath the covers and yawns as Mikey crawls in behind her. He wraps his arm around her middle and nuzzles her hair. Liren jabs him with her elbow and moans, “no more. I’m tapping out.”
Mikey's lips turn down into a pout but he wriggles behind her and presses his hips against her. “You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone.” Liren pinches his arm and tells him to “keep dreaming.”
Her alarm sounded early but Liren bounded out of bed with a burst of energy. She had set her clothes out the night before and pulled them on quickly and hustled into the bathroom. She hurriedly brushed her teeth and combed her hair, braiding it and letting it fall down her back. Leaving the bathroom, she crept through her bedroom, down the hall into the kitchen and turned on the coffee pot. She made a quick poor mans gravy and popped some biscuits in the airfryer and waited. Bouncing her leg while she sipped her coffee, she checked her phone for the time, and sighed. In her excitement to return to work, she’d woken earlier than she needed to and now had to wait. She had about thirty minutes. Fifteen, if she ate really slow and brushed her teeth again. Mikey was still asleep when she peeked through the doorway to check on him. He’d tossed all the covers off the bed and was sprawled over the entire space. And he had the nerve to say he wasn’t a bed hog. Lies and hogwash! The timer on the airfryer gave her a two minute warning beep. She left the orc there, warm in her bed, and plated the biscuits for herself and some for Mikey to have when he woke up. She took her time eating and sipping her coffee while she waited for her two coworkers to show. It was kind of funny, she thought, how much she had disliked them in the beginning. She’d been downright hostile to them but that was before when they were still a threat. She supposed they still could be but she didn’t see them that way any longer. Now she was anxiously awaiting their arrival; couldn't wait to see their faces. Not seeing them after being together for weeks had left her a little sad, mopey. Maybe she should have that little get together with everyone; invite Gemma, the two agents, and Nick. Mikey too of course but she’d have to swear him to be on his best behavior if Kandomere did come. She’d mention the party to the two agents today and see what they thought. Liren hoped they wouldn’t think it strange she’d invite them. They’d had lunch at her place before but that hadn’t been a personal call, just convenient. Even though she’d been sweating it at the time, so worried about what Kandomere would think of her cooking. She’d text Gemma first to get her opinion and set up a date that was good for her. Maybe they could have their own little sleep over too. Liren missed her Jellybean something terrible. But it would have to be after she caught up on her sleep.
Liren was putting her plate in the sink when she heard them pull up and nearly dropped it with her excitement. She skirts to the coffee pot and pulls out two of her togo cups, filling them. She adds the condiments she’s learned that they each like, and waits. Liren purposefully doesn't answer the door, bouncing on her heels, waiting for the two agents to come in. She holds the two mugs in hand in front of her as she shouts for them to come in. She grins from ear to ear as she takes in Kandomere and Montehugh’s surprised faces. It’s priceless. “Hi guys,” she says brightly.
“Well, good morning to you too, sunshine.”
“Good to see you too, Jolly Red Giant.”
She chuckles and hands him his cup. Montehugh sips it and hums in appreciation. “That was weak Daniels.” Liren shoots Montehugh a smirk to let him know that she’s missed his teasing.
Liren shrugs, “What can I say I’m a little rusty.” The ginger shakes a finger at her as if to say he hasn’t forgotten her week long absence. He’ll ask her why before the day is over with, she just knows it.
Kandomere watches the exchange, waiting his turn. Liren feels his eyes on her and she tries to keep her hand steady when he reaches out to take the other cup from her. His fingers graze hers and Liren shoots him a cautious smile. “Five sugar, and heavy on the creamer just how you like it.” There’s a minute tilt to Kandomere’s head and you know what he’s thinking. “I’ve seen you make your coffee enough times to know how you like it,” she says, rolling her eyes.
“Thank you,” he says, there's a hint of a small tugging at his lips. Liren watches him take the first sip. The tips of his sharp teeth peek from behind his lips and suddenly she’s imagining how they’d feel on her neck. Jesus christ, he’s not a vampire! Liren smiles at him like she hadn’t just thought about him putting his mouth on her. She goes to put on her boots to hide the raging blush that’s crept into her cheeks. Not sure what's gotten into her, she remembers that she is sick of sex, and love bites after this week. But maybe not from him… Stop it!
Mikey saunters into the kitchen while she’d mentally scolding herself. Liren looks up from tying her shoes and sees that he’s bare chested and the waistband of his pants are riding dangerously low on his hips. Sweet jesus! Liren's eyes bulge and she sends him a look. You promised you wouldn’t, she mentally groans, sending the thought his way. He ignores her by smiling and fixes his own cup of coffee. “Morning agents,” he says grinning. Liren holds herself back and clears her throat. She wants to strangle him. It’s a good thing he’ll be gone by the time she gets back home or she might. It’s not so much that he’s half naked with his tits out, but that she knows his back is covered in marks from her nails, and there's a set of teeth marks on his shoulder and he’s trying his damndest to flash them at everyone. Thankfully most of the marks blend into his mottled skin. Except the bite on his shoulder. Liren wants to melt into the floor when she notices it and clears her throat again, and widens her eyes at the orc.
Both agents nod in his direction and Liren watches the exchange between Kandomere and Mikey. No one speaks but there's plenty said. She tries to break the tension by gathering up her stuff and heading to the door. It has the desired effect and snaps everyone into action. Montehugh is the first one out the door followed by Kandomere and then Liren. Liren pins Mikey with an annoyed glare and tells him to lock up. “Wait!”  He grabs her by the waist and pecks her cheek. Liren pushes him off and smacks his chest. “You’re being an ass Michael.”
“What?” His voice is laced with confusion. But he doesn’t look the least bit apologetic. Liren points a finger at him, then pokes his bitten shoulder. “Sorry,” he murmurs, but she's not sure that he really is. Liren pulls away from him and Mikey doesn’t let go. “Come on Lir, don't be like that.”
“Mikey I asked you not to start anything with Kanodmere and that's the first thing you did when you walked in,” Liren sighs.
“What did I do? I said hello.” Mikey shrugs and turns his back on her. “Why are you always on his side?”
A surge of apprehension straightens her spine, hands fisting on her hips. “Why are you making sides? I’m not on anyone's side,” her voice edged with annoyance. Liren’s good mood deflated.
“Well it seems like there is.”
“Seriously.”
“Yes!”
Liren crosses her arms. The two stare at one another. “I don’t have time for this right now. See ya later.” Her braid whips behind her as she turns to leave. Mikey grabs her hand and Liren snatches it away. “Would you cut it out already,” she nearly shouts, in her growing frustration. Liren turns to head towards the car, she turns and Kandomere is standing right behind her.
“Problem?”
Liren shakes her head. “Not at all. Let’s go.” Behind her Mikey growls and tugs on her arm again.
“Lir, wait a minute.” She opens her mouth to tell him to stop making a scene and that they’ll talk about it later but Kandomere steps in. He’s quick. He grabs Mikeys wrist and twists, shoving him back. Mikey stumbles back and growls at Kandomere. The elf moves her behind him, blocking her from Mikey's view. “I told you to back off.” Mikey growls at him.
“You’re the one that needs to back off right now,” Kandomere says calmly. Mikey puffs out his chest and begins to charge Kandomere. Montehugh is hollering behind them and running from the truck. Liren moves from behind Kandomere just as Mikey gets within reach and she shifts the earth beneath his feet, sending him sprawling to the ground. Liren freezes. Her heart sinks. She hadn’t meant to. Not really. It was just a reaction. She hadn’t wanted them to fight or hurt each other. Liren rushes to Mikey and he gives her a bewildered look.
“How did you do that?” She doesn’t say anything. She hadn’t prepped for this conversation with him. He wasn’t supposed to know. She doesn’t know what to say, so she says nothing. She helps him up but he doesn’t take her help. “What was that Liren?”
“Liren, now's not the time,” Kandomere says, trying to give her an out. Liren snaps her head in his direction, and gives him the most exasperated look she can muster. “I know that agent. Could you give us a moment?”
Kandomere doesn’t budge. She motions with her eyes and he only glares at her. Their stare off ends with him shaking his head and running a hand through his hair. Montehugh is red faced behind him and making a fuss, talking about arresting Mikey for attempted assault on a Federal agent, as he sucks in a breath, but Kandomere puts a calming hand on his partner's arm and steers him towards the car. “Two minutes Daniels.” She nods to the elf and turns her attention back to her bewildered and angry boyfriend.
Liren pushes Mikey back toward the house and he tries to stop her. “What was that Liren? How did you do that?”
“I don’t know what you mean. I didn’t do anything.”
“Don't play dumb. You moved me.”
‘Can we talk about whatever you think you saw later? You’re embarrassing me,” she whispers. Her words make him frown as it registers. Mikey moves to touch her and she steps back. ‘Don’t. We’ll talk later.” She gives his arm a quick squeeze and reminds him to lock up when he leaves. She doesn’t look back at him, because she doesn't want to see what his face looks like. One: because she’s annoyed with him and his stupid face. Two: because she’s probably hurt his feelings, and Three: she doesn’t want him to see hers and how mortified she is at what she's just done.
Liren’s not sure what's just happened as she climbs into the back of the car. She's never messed up with her magic like that before, never. And in the span of five minutes she's crapped on whatever restraint she's claimed to have in the past. She deflates and tries to keep the good mood that she’d woken up with. Buckling her seat belt she ignores Montehugh’s questioning stare by staring down at her traitorous feet and waits for Kandomere to start the car. He turns around in his seat and looks her in the eyes. “We’ll talk later.” Liren swallows. She must be in trouble. Liren nods and knows that he's probably just worried, especially after what she’d told him about her ex. And then Mikey decides to show his ass. He probably thinks she has a habit of poor taste in men. But Mikey’s not the problem. He’s just coming down from heat and is probably still a little hormonal. At least that's the only explanation she can think of other than his jealousy of Kandomere. Kandomere’s probably just upset that she’s abused her powers just now. His eyes don't have the same brightness as they did when she handed him his coffee, now they’ve got a darker tint to them. He looks almost murderous. He’s either angry she used her powers or pissed about having to get into the middle of things with her and Mikey. Lirens guilt hits her, she's never used her powers like that before. She hadn’t meant too. She’d just reacted. And she’d done it to Mikey… She was such a shit girlfriend.

Dark Matters
Chapter 4:
Shae left the food to simmer on the stovetop before joining the three men in the kitchen. Her dog and Nick seemed to be getting along perfectly, meanwhile Daryl was wandering the room, browsing her decor.
She joined Kandomere on the couch, sitting at the opposite end. Despite how great it was to see him, she couldn’t help but feel a bit of dread deep in her gut. To be fair, how they left off wasn’t the best, and she’d never planned on seeing him again. Crazy how life works, isn’t it?
“So, what happens if you find Nadia and Akila?” Shae dared to ask. She had a feeling there wouldn’t be much they could tell her, but with her work background with Kandomere, maybe he’d give just a bit.
He watched her silently, his frame unmoving but senses always on a swivel, but every one of those was focused on Shae, at the moment. Although it was easier to talk past the lump in his throat he’d felt since stepping into her place, he was still overtaken by her presence, as he always had been. When she placed herself at the opposite end of the couch, he suddenly felt the distance that had been between them for all this time- how had he gone so long without even speaking to her? He cleared his throat. “They’ll be charged and likely be imprisoned, but I can’t talk specifics if they receive harsher punishments,” he explained, meeting her eyes.
“What about the wand?”
Daryl’s body stiffened at the mention. He could say he trusted in Kandomere’s judgement enough to believe Shae wouldn’t be part of any Inferni business, but let’s be real. This man was more pessimistic than he’d ever been before, considering his newly found ability and last run in with Inferni. Daryl turned slightly, eyebrow raised as he looked between Shae and Kandomere. “What about it?”
”Wands are ancient weapons forged from the Dark Lord- only he can truly vanquish them. There has never been a method discovered that effectively destroys them, so we keep them in centers like the ones Nadia and Akila infiltrated,” Kandomere looked to Ward when he spoke. “For now, we can only keep them contained and away from the world as best as possible,” he exhaled, knowing full well how brittle of a solution that was, but it was realistically their only solution. Whatever evil may come knocking on the door, it was his job to keep that door locked.
Shae looked down at her hands, picking at her nails. As much as she hated being that person, she knew Kandomere wouldn’t come up with a plan for all possibilities. “What if it’s too late?” she asked, tone lowered.
That caught Nick’s attention, a pit of nerves forming in his gut. “What do you mean?”
”Girl, that fucking prick at the mercado was giving me a hard time again-“ The door swung open and in stepped a shorter woman with dark, straight hair to her chin and hazel eyes, paper bag full of food and booze in one arm and her sunglasses in the other, looking at each individual face.
“Oh.” She first took notice of the two officers in uniform. When the blue haired elf caught her eye though, the match was made in her head, realization dawning on her. “Oh. I’ve interrupted something,” she winced, looking at Shae apologetically.
His brows pulled together in mild annoyance at the human’s rude entrance. “Who is this?” Kandomere pointed to her, looking to Shae.
Shae dropped her head forward as she snorted a laugh. “This is Rita,” she introduced. “I told you about Rita before.” Shae stood, helping her friend with the groceries. “Rita, you remember Kandomere. And this is Officers Daryl award and Nick Jakoby. Remember the whole wand thing a couple years back?”
Daryl quickly stepped forward. “That was all just a rumor,” he added quickly.
Shae rolled her eyes. “Please, I was MTF for years, I know this works.”
”Oh, I definitely remember Kandomere.” Rita stuck her chin up a little, keeping her big eyes on his scowl until she’d passed. “Nice to meet you,” she nodded and smiled kindly at Ward as she passed, but upon moving closer to the tuskless Orc, she let her eyes linger on his kind face, taking in the way he timidly made himself known around the room. Her heart throbbed a little. “It’s nice to meet you,” she looked at his badge. “Officer Jakoby,” she grinned, following Shae away.
Nick’s eyes followed after Rita. “Uh… I, uh…” His words were lost to him, taken aback by her sweet demeanor.
Meanwhile Kandomere looked on in exasperation. “She knows?” he implored.
She sighed roughly. “Yes, she knows,” Shae confirmed. “She was the only one there for me when shit went down.” Not just the recent events of the past few years. in all fairness, that didn’t really involve Shae at all. No, Rita was there for Shae from the very start of her Bright revelation, ten, long years ago.
Ward looked between Shae, Rita, and Kandomere. “How much does she know?”
Shae crossed her arms over her chest, looking guilty. Even though she didn’t work for them anymore, it could still mean trouble. “She knows as much as I do,” she admitted, then looked to Kandomere. “All of it.”
Rita looked on calmly, silently unpacking the paper bag and placing the assorted snacks and drinks on the counter. It was really her fault this was an issue now; she’d made the decision to come over unannounced, but this was truly the last thing she expected to find sitting in her friend’s home when all she thought would come of this day was booze, gossip and too much food.
Kandomere looked at Rita, both of their steely glares meeting. Ah, yes- I remember this one, he recalled bitterly.
This wasn’t how things were supposed to be done, but his plan of action to keep the wand safe had been laid out like a drunk. Rules didn’t feel so important to follow when he was desperate to resolve the danger, which meant not taking this liability in and questioning her until she broke. She’d held the delicate information all this time with no incident, so for now, he had no real reason not to trust her.
His eyes shot to Shae. I can trust her judgement, at least.
“Fine. She can stay.” He paused to point at Rita. “You speak a word of this to anyone and I will lock you away from daylight for the remainder of your life,” he threatened.
Rita held her hands up. “I already pink swore to Shae that I wouldn’t tell anyone,” she grinned sarcastically.
Daryl ran his hand over his face, doing his damnedest to keep his frustration down. “Alright, so what now?” he asked impatiently. “We just get a search party going for those two crazy ass elves?”
“And what about what Shae said?” Nick added. “What if we’re too late?”
Kandomere paused, looking at all their faces when the grim question was brought up. “If he comes back, I don’t know what we could do to stop him,” he sighed, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. He knew that news would not sit well with them just as it didn’t with him, but keeping them in the dark that any efforts they made could be pointless didn’t sit right with him, either.
“But we may have a chance to prevent it from happening if you help us, Shae.” He looked to her again, his silver eyes pleading. “You two are the only Brights I have,” he realized the same moment he said it.
Rita’s brows lifted high in surprise, glancing at Shae as she poured them drinks. Too late? she thought to herself, her anxiety stirring under her calm exterior.
Shae nodded gently. “In my experience since knowing I was a Bright, I can feel some kind of... force, I guess, when Magic is used.” She glanced over to Daryl. “That’s how I know the Wand being a rumor was bullshit.”
Nick perked up considerably. “So, you have some kind of sixth sense?” Despite the absolute trauma and horror experienced in just one night with Leilah, he just couldn’t bring himself to think that Magic was anything but cool.
A humble shrug. “Something like that,” Shae confirmed.
”That exact sense of yours can help us locate where they might be collecting, but I’m sure they’re anticipating that. We’d have to be clever about this, if you’re willing to help us.”
Rita grinned when noticing Nick pipe up, sipping her drink and leaned against the counter. “What’s in it for Shae, though?” she asked, looking head on at Kandomere.
”That’s none of your business,” he replied coldly. It baffled him to think he wouldn’t compensate her for the tremendous danger ahead, but how selfish would he sound if he admitted a larger part of him wanted her to help just so he didn’t feel so alone in this matter? MTF never looked good from the outside, he realized that, but having someone he was once close with know the struggles from the inside eased some of the qualms in his heart.
Shae held up her hands, shaking her head. “I don’t need anything,” she assured. “I’m doing just fine.”
Define fine. Shae had gone from living in an Elf Town penthouse, working as a well-known, well-respected Magic Task Force agent and partnered with the only elf to ever catch her fancy, to working as a bartender and den mother at a local strip club.
Sure, she was doing fine, but it wasn’t what she expected for herself.
”Don’t be so humble, Shae,” Rita whispered under her breath at her friend, checking to make sure no one had heard her.
He rolled his eyes. Humans really are naive. “She’s right, you have every right to name your price,” Kandomere stubbornly agreed, annoyed that once again he’d been interrupted before he could say the same thing. “But you’ll help us?” he asked again. Please, please, please, Shae.
She didn’t hesitate to nod. “Of course, I will.”
All of this felt wrong to Daryl. This girl just happened to know the two elves that stole the wand, and she had no affiliation with them in this? It was too convenient, too easy.
Kandomere concealed his sigh of relief but felt it wash over him. “Thank you, Shae. And I’m sorry. I didn’t expect to be barging in like this,” he apologized, glancing down to adjust the sleeve of his coat. There was no denying he felt peace just being in her presence, that already he felt like this impossible mission of theirs might actually be possible.
“Honestly, it’s not a big deal,” Shae insisted, waving a hand dismissively. She glanced over toward the stove, doing a double take as she remembered the food was still simmering. “Ready to eat?” she asked, turning off the stovetop flames.
Nick sauntered over to the kitchen. “It smells great,” he complimented. “Need help setting the table?”
Shae smiled brightly. “I would appreciate that.”
Kandomere watched Shae, observing as she smiled and spoke to the Orc… He should’ve been the one to stand and offer help. Fool, you’re just sitting here, he belittled himself, crossing his legs in annoyance, tugging the end to his coat again. God forsaken fool.
Rita looked over her shoulder when Nick approached, slyly watching him from the corner of her eye when she leaned on the counter opposite to stand beside Shae. For a big thing like him he was awfully agile.
“When did he come back?” she whispered to Shae, her mouth hidden behind her cup as she silently observed the men around them. “Did he even call?!” she hissed a little heatedly, looking at her with curious eyes.
Shae sighed softly, shaking her head as she loaded up the plates with food. “Him and the officers came this morning to question me,” she told her friend. “Remember those girls I told you about? The ones I went to college with?” She felt uneasy, but continued when Rita nodded. “Apparently, they went Inferni,” she said bitterly. “When they’d asked me for help with a recent project, I’m guessing it was to help steal back the Wand from MTF archives.”
Her eyes grew wide. “Are you serious!?” Rita hissed, pausing as she came to better understand the gravity of the situation she’d stumbled into, and looked at Shae in wonder. How did she so willingly agree to help them? Without any hesitation?
“Are you sure you wanna get involved in this?” she asked Shae, taking a half step closer.
Kandomere couldn’t hear over the clattering of the plates being filled or the Orc setting the table, but the way her friend would glance back put him on edge, in addition fueling the urge to get up and try to walk over as nonchalantly as possible and place himself at the table to better hear, but every move he made felt stiff, and too thought out.
Shae paused when serving up the last plate, an almost far off stare in her eyes. “I know how this looks, Rita. I know it’s suspicious. Hell, Officer Ward has been giving me dirty looks all night.” A soft smile graced her features. “But, if I’m being honest, I missed doing this kind of work. I was a damn good agent. Things just couldn’t work. But just because I’m a Bright doesn’t mean I agree with any of this ‘raising the Dark Lord’ crap that the Inferni got in their heads.” She glanced back toward Kandomere at the table. “I want that as much as I wanted to never see him again,” she inadvertently thought out loud.
The moment her eyes met his he didn’t want her to pull away. There’s so much I want to talk to you about, he wanted to tell her. But now, was not that day. With her helping though, maybe it could come soon.
Rita nodded, understanding the longing she spoke of now the same way she did when she’d recall it other times, but also deeply understood the complexity of having Kandomere involved, and the emotions that must’ve come with it. “As long as you’re sure, I trust your judgement. I just want you to be okay.” She bumped her elbow against Shae’s.
The soft bump brought Shae back to reality. She’d be lying if she said she didn’t think about Kandomere often, especially now that he was back in her life. There was so much to tell him. Not now, she thought to herself, opting to smile instead as she brought plates to the table.
He stood with a low grunt, fixing his coat before approaching the table to find a seat. He watched the others move around, picking a chair to pull out as she placed the plates down. “So, how have things been?” Kandomere asked her, desperate to hear if she’d been as plagued with loneliness as he, but also hopeful to hear that she was thriving.
Rita came to meet Shae at the counter before the last two plates were delivered, gently stopping her hand. “Let me take these ones, yeah?” she whispered with a coy smile, gesturing over towards the Orc cop with mischief in her big eyes.
“They’ve been,” Shae answered Kandomere, just barely catching her friend’s subliminal message. Christ alive, Rita was into the orc. She chuckled quietly to herself, watching her friend take the plates and go make a move on Nick. “Titty bar down the way is picking up traction, so the money’s good. It’s been amazing nannying the neighborhood kids and watching them grow up. Honestly, it makes me want one of my own.”
Kandomere’s brows jumped in surprise at the mention of her wanting children, but did it really surprise him, being the way she was with everyone? Of course she would be a good mother. “That’s good, I’m glad to hear you’re doing well.” He gave her a small grin. “You haven’t had any trouble living here?”
Shae scrunched her nose. “Well, not anymore, at least.” She kept it very vague, not wanting to set off any alarms with anyone. “Everyone has been lovely nowadays.”
He twisted his utensil in his food, catching that small little detail. “’Anymore’?” he repeated in question, looking at her. His fist rested at the tables surface, clenched. What kind of harassment had she endured? The mere thought she had endured any at all was enough to anger him.
“It’s nothing. Everything’s fine now.”
Even more like Shae... No one was allowed to worry about her. She always believed there were bigger fish to fry, putting whatever she was going through on the bottom of everyone’s list. Kandomere nodded, looking down at his plate to take a bite. “it’s very good,” he grinned at her around his mouthful.
She hummed with a soft smile. “I remember how you like it.”
Kandomere smiled, a little bashfully. Nothing really had changed about her, had it? The kindness was still warm on her, the peace she emitted calming the wildest of his nerves that had been ringing since this all started. He wished he could stay in this bubble, without any of the dangerous obligations he’d have to return to.
Bu the more the two spoke, the more Daryl realized what their history was or might’ve been. And the more he realized that, the more he was uncomfortable with the situation. All of this could end very poorly for everyone.

Daryl approached Kandomere in the living after they’d all eaten, using the opportunity of Shae busying herself with cleanup and Nick speaking with Rita outside to voice his concerns. “You sure this is a good idea, man?” he questioned, eyes on Shae, voice low so she couldn’t hear him. “None of this seems any kind of wrong to you?”
The agent looked to the officer, turning slowly so his back was to Shae and pretending to be observing the room around them. “None of this feels right, but we don’t have the time to do this by the rules. She’s strong, she’s trustworthy, and you two together are our best shot against the Inferni,” he replied quietly, glancing over his shoulder to make sure their conversation had not been detected.
“How do we know she’s not part of that shit?” Daryl challenged. “Just take her word for it? You haven’t seen this girl in years, you don’t know what could’ve changed.” He wasn’t wrong. That could be a possibility, but then again, it just didn’t make any sense.
“Why would an elf that was Inferni willingly live in an orc neighborhood such as this? For cover? Inferni don’t do that, Officer. They do their business in broad daylight, I’m sure you remember,” Kandomere noted, looking at him critically.
Daryl scoffed. “Yeah, well, maybe after getting their asses handed to them by an orc and a human, they started taking some precautions.”
“There’s no denying that,” Kandomre half grinned. “But I truly think we’ll only benefit from having her on our side. She’s well versed in my side of the line and is- was an excellent agent.” It was almost painful to have to correct himself like that. “She also has insight you might find helpful.”
“Hey, hey, you got a lot of nerve thinking I’m gonna be doing any Magic shit,” he said lowly, holding a warning finger up to Kandomere. “I’m doing my job as a police officer. She can keep that Magic shit to herself, alright? I’m good.”
The small pool illuminated the dark damp room, surrounded by Inferni men and women, a low, harmonic chant echoing through. The light pulsed as their Magic grew stronger, their power coming together for one sole purpose. A form of water lifted from the pool, moulding and meshing into a humanoid form. Chants became louder, Magic became stronger. The water became solid, a body of a man forming inside before the water dripped off. Red, dark eyes opened. He was here. He was risen.
It was hard to not hear the conversation. They seemed to forget that elves have heightened senses, but she wasn’t going to make a scene of it. It sucked that Daryl didn’t trust her, but she didn’t blame him. She did, however, find solace that, even after all these years, Kandomere still trusted her. Shae’s thoughts were intruded by a sharp sting of something electric coursing through her body. She gasped sharply, falling to her knees and dropping dishes, shattering.
Just as he was about to respond to Ward’s dismissal, the sudden crashing of plates snapped his head in Shae’s direction, finding her on her knees in the kitchen. Panic flooded him, and he was at her side quicker than the flap of a hummingbird’s wing. “Shae!? Are you alright!?” he asked, mindful of the shattered plates but kneeling down before her to hold her shoulders.
She wasn’t the type to scare easily. Unsettle, maybe, but she was never known to fear anything.
But the look in her eyes as they met Kandomere’s, the way her body trembled. Full of terror. She knew this feeling on a much smaller scale, but this? This was big.
It was him.
It took a moment for Daryl to realize. “Shit...” he hissed, speeding toward the door for Nick.
Kandomere needn’t ask to know this look in her eye, and the chills it sent down his body were enough to make him want to run and not look back, but this was his disaster to handle. “He’s back, isn’t he?” he whispered, as if uttering the words would summon him to that very spot.
Tears filled her eyes, but she wouldn’t let them fall. Now was not the time to cry. She nodded, gripping his sleeves as she tried to stand shakily. “And he’s close.”
”Can you tell which direction he’s in?” he asked as he helped her stand, adrenaline rising in his veins and pulling his phone out, ready to make the call to Montehugh.
“I have no idea,” she said regrettably. “But I can feel his power.” Her arms wrapped around herself, finding whatever comfort she possibly could. “This is bad, Kandomere… We thought Leilah was a hard one when we were working on that case, but we’ve never encountered anything like this.”
He swallowed. Fuck, how had they succeeded so fast!? He’d been a fool to think they had time, and now realized he’d mishandled the time that was now up. “I need to make a call.” He withdrew his hand from Shae’s shoulder, lingering at her eyes before stepping away and dialing Montehugh.
Rita stormed in with Nick, their moment of content flipping on its head when Daryl summoned them.  ”What’s going on? Are you okay?” she asked, taking Kandomere’s place at Shae’s side. She tried to read her, but that look on her face… she’d never seen that one before. “What happened?”
“They did it,” Nick answered before Shae could. “He’s back.”
Shae was lost in her own mind, everything else around her hardly comprehensible. She watched Kandomere walk away, eyes lingering. Why did it have to be like this? Everything that happened to date was just one big spiral that didn’t seem to have a bottom and nothing to grab onto. She’d already agreed to help, but now that it was all happening, she didn’t know what to do.
Kandomere stepped onto the balcony where Officer Jakoby and Callie once sat, a hand on his chest and struggling to even the panicked breaths he didn’t want the others to see. He pressed the phone to his ear and waited only briefly before Montehugh picked up, answering with a casual, “What’s up, boss?”
“I need all warehouses and abandoned structures within a 10 mile radius of my location swept for the Wand and any activity from Inferni,” he snapped, his eyes roaming the horizon of East LA.
He paused. “Y-you got it… what’s going on?” he asked hesitantly, but the tone of Kandomere’s voice only brought a great sense of dread.
He almost laughed. How do you deliver news that the entirety of the city- of the fucking world was under a catastrophic threat? How do you even comprehend that?! “We we’re too late, Ulysses,” he spoke forlornly, pulling his hand down his face. “They brought him back.”
Silence took the place of any words, because silence was all that occupied his mind. It wasn’t just that this was the worst case scenario, it was that all the hard work they’d done to prevent this had all been for nothing. It honestly left him kind of pissed off. “I’ll uh, I’ll get to those sweeps right now, Boss, he replied, ending the call.
Daryl huffed, staring daggers at Shae. “What a coincidence, right?” And he left it at that, leaving the apartment and going back to the car, ringing his wife on his cellphone.
Nick watched Daryl go, frustration building toward his partner’s attitude. “He doesn’t mean it, Shae,” he assured. “All of this Magic stuff has him on edge.”
Rita turned and scoffed in disgust at Ward’s sour words and sudden exit. “What an ass!” she yelled at his departure, looking back at Shae with brows arched in anger. “Don’t listen to that nonsense.”
She could only shake her head. Again, Shae didn’t blame Ward for his attitude toward her. Honestly it was expected, but she had bigger things to worry about. “I need a minute,” she croaked, breaking away from the two mindlessly walking off toward the bathroom down the hall.
Kandomere looked down at the phone after Montehugh ended the call, his hand dropping to his side and face lifting to take in a little of the sunshine warming his pale cheeks. He took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. He needed moments of silence like this to retreat to when shit would eventually hit the fan. He turned to step inside, following Shae with his eyes when she exited the room.
Nick grumbled under his breath, rubbing a hand over his forehead before turning to Kandomere. “What now, boss?”
He stopped beside Jakoby. “For now, we wait to see what Montehugh’s sweep turns up. We don’t know where to start until we have something to go off of,” he explained, again looking in the direction Shae left, but then looking to the front door. “He left?” He asked Nick, his blue brows furrowing.
“Unless he’s walking home, no. Just stepped out.” He shook his head. “He’s not a fan of this. His cooperation with Shae is going to be rocky.”
”He has no choice but to cooperate.” Kandomere said through tight teeth, leaving Nick with a cold glare before following the direction Shae left in, and down the hall.
He quietly approached the only door that was closed in the hall, pausing before gently tapping his knuckles against the door. “Shae? Are you alright?” He called to her softly.
She was hunched over the sink, her head in her hands. You’d think her years of MTF training would’ve prepared her for this. Then again, it had been years longer that she was away from said job. “Yeah,” she called back, voice rough. “Yeah, I’m good.”
Ynshael… Shae jumped at the whispering voice, looking around the bathroom as if someone else was there. No one else was.
”Are you sure?” he asked, shifting to the other side of the door frame. “Listen... I know it’s been too long since we’ve spoke, but I’m still here for you if you need me. To talk, I mean.” Kandomere spoke sincerely, wanting nothing more to see her face when he told her, but the door remained shut. “Shae?”
She pressed her hands to her temples, taking deep breaths to calm herself. First the Inferni, now she’s hearing voices? Fuck this shit. Deep down, she regretted offering her help, but there was no going back.
Once she’d shaken the impending dread, Shae cleaned herself up a bit before heading toward the door. “I’m okay, I just-“ She gasped again as she opened the door, not expecting Kandomere to be so close. Her smaller body bumped into his, her hands grabbing his arms to regain stability. “Ay, Dios mío,” she breathed in a startled tone.
With a loud exhale, Rita reached for the bottle she’d brought with, pouring the cold drink to the brim of her glass. She felt like she should’ve called family to check up on them, but the lack of volcanos erupting and the ground not splitting beneath their feet gave her some reassurance that disaster hadn’t come so abruptly. “Want one?” She asked Nick, tilting her cup in his direction and her smile knocked down a few amps.
He shook his head, holding up his hands. “No, thank you. I don’t drink on the job.” Oh, sweet summer child.
She giggled. “Doesn’t seem to matter much at this point, but suit yourself, Officer,” she toasted at him with a grin, taking a few hearty sips of the drink. I’m not leaving this world sober if I can help it.
Nick chuckled softly at Rita’s banter, doing a double take toward the hall.
Kandomere hadn’t expected her to walk right into him, but that’s what he got for staring so intensely at the grain of the door while waiting for her. He grunted when she made impact, his hands flying up to hold under her elbows and look down at her. He blinked a few times; she was so close. He cleared his throat. “My apologies, I didn’t mean to startle you,” he said low, soothingly.
A soft blush dusted her cheeks when she realized how close they were. Not even when working together did they ever find themselves in each other’s arms like this, no matter how often she’d thought about it. “It’s… It’s okay, I, uh…” Her words trailed off as she looked up at him, eyes meeting. Christ alive, she’d forgotten how beautiful this man was. His sleek blue hair, the sharp cut of his jawline and cheekbones, the piercing stare that could intimidate the worst of criminals, but so comforting to Shae. She lost herself in him.
Rita furrowed her brows at the commotion from the hall, throwing back the last of her drink and burping lowly, her eyes narrowing. Are they…?  She extended her neck in her struggle to listen to their low conversation in the hall, barely landing the booze in her cup as she poured another.
Kandomere was lost in her gaze, his climbing heart rate quickening his breaths, soaking in this intimate moment with her. His bones ached from her absence... How had he gone so long without taking in her beauty? His hand raised to push back a lock of hair against her cheek, swallowing when his fingertip grazed her warm skin. He just… couldn’t pull away.
The chance was right there. All she had to do was stand on her toes and their lips would lock. It was right there. Instead, she cleared her throat, taking a step back. “I’ll, uh…” She pointed to her bed room. “I’m going to get dressed. Then we can go… do things, or… whatever we need to do.”
Kandomere nodded, taking a step back to allow her passage. “We uh, I have men sweeping the area, so right now we’ll just be waiting to see if they find anything, but we can do that elsewhere,” he told her, blinking clarity back to his vision. “I don’t want to impose.” He exited the hall to leave her to change, walking through the kitchen and living room to the front door with his eyes downcast. He wanted to stop this ridiculous flutter in his gut when he thought of her joining them; now was not the time for these long dormant sensations, or the excitement when thinking of working side by side with her again.
His own hearing was good enough to hear the full conversation. “Maybe Shae should come with us,” Nick proposed. “If they reached out to her once, they may try to do it again. And I don’t think they’ll take no for an answer this time.”
He easily picked up Nick’s voice. “I’m sure you heard him,” Kandomere told her. “And he’s right,” he added. “If they decide to make another proposal in person this time. It’s best you’re not here alone.”
Rita’s brows furrowed, looking at Nick when he spoke. “Huh?” she asked, the conversation going on in the hall only muted murmurs to her human ears.
Nick nodded, turning to Rita. “We’re gonna take Shae with us,” he explained. “A busier neighborhood, somewhere we can keep closer eyes on her with more security.”
She threw back the rest of her drink, an eye pinched shut and her throat burning, a few little coughs following. “I suppose that’s my cue to get going,” she sighed light-heartedly, moving her hair off her shoulder. “Good thing I didn’t drive,” she giggled, gathering her purse and sunglasses that were sat on the counter beside her.
Nick took a bold step forward. “Why don’t you let us take you?” he offered. “It’s getting dark. You shouldn’t be walking alone.”
Inwardly, Rita’d hoped he’d offer a ride, and secretly, she was pretty stoked she had a few extra minutes worth of that ride with the cute cop she for some reason couldn’t stop herself from getting a little flustered over when his golden eyes fell on her. “Sure!” she piped, slipping her purse onto her shoulder a little wobbly.
His ears twitched as he smiled with a nod, walking over and propping his elbow out for her to take.
“Oh, que caballero,” Rita purred, her hand sliding into the crook of his elbow, slyly squeezing the muscle of his bicep.
He had no clue what she said, but he likes how it sounded. He lead her out to the car waiting in the parking lot.
Kandomere’s frown was of mild disgust watching Callie openly flirt with the Orc, his silver eyes rolling and crossing his arms over his chest as he continued to wait, staring at the entrance to the hall. He was impatient, but for what? To get going, or just be by her side and work again?
Shae took a while in her bedroom, getting dressed to properly go outside and packing a bag or two. Her mind reeled at the moment she shared with Kandomere. It was exactly what she’d always wanted, but why did it fill her with anxiety? She tried to push past the thoughts as best she could, slipping the bags on her shoulders and heading out of the room. She dawned a pair of ripped jeans and the same shirt, now covered by a leather jacket.
He looked to the hall again when he heard her steps. He repressed how widely he really wanted to smile. She looked good. “Let me help with those,” Kandomere approached, offering a hand for one.
A soft smile as she slipped one bag off her shoulder. “If they could both go in your car, I’d appreciate that,” she requested. “I actually have my own ride I’d like to take, if that’s okay.”
He eyed her curiously as he reached for her other bag, interested in what means of transportation she had. “Sure. And what about um… Titan?” he asked, looking down at the Corso.
She looked back at Titan who wagged his tail happily, then back to Kandomere, scrunching her nose with an apologetic smile. “Back seat?”
He looked down at the kind eyed beast, nodding stiffly after sharing a few quiet moments with the dog. “I hope he doesn’t puke in cars,” he mumbled, stretching an arm out to let the dog smell his hand.
Shae smiled wide as she watched Titan take to Kandomere so quickly, bumping his nose under his hand for head pats. “Just make sure he has a window seat. He’s a good dog, very smart.” She grabbed her keys from the hook by the door. “I’ll meet you out front,” she called back as she took off for her vehicle.
He nodded, turning towards the door with Titan and the bags in tow. “Now your mother has set high standards for you and that’s what I expect, good boy,” he spoke to the dog, opening the front door. “Please, stay close to us on the road… whatever method you’re taking,” he told Shae before stepping into the hall. He looked up and down; they must be at the cars already.
Nick helped Rita into the back seat, scooting in next to her, as Daryl already took the front passenger. Daryl looked back at the two, then forward toward Kandomere as he brought down bags and the dog. “Where’s Cortez?” he asked.
Kandomere walked beside the trunk of his car and pressed the button, the hatch popping up. “She said she’d ride separately,” he told him, moving to the side to let the dog in the car. “Good thing too, there’s no space left,” he grunted.
”Titan! Ven, ven hermoso!” Rita called cheerily, patting her lap to get the dog to jump in. “You like dogs, right?” she asked Nick.
He smiled wide. “I love them!” He joined Rita in giving Titan all the attention he deserved.
Daryl grunted in response, looking back out the window. He did a double take when a sleek, red Kawasaki motorcycle pulled toward them. “You gotta be kidding me,” he grumbled.
Shae pulled up next to the car, lifting up the visor on her helmet so her face was visible to Kandomere. “I’ll have somewhere to park this, right? Wherever you’re taking me?”
He looked out, slack jawed and staring at the rocket between her legs. “Yeah, yeah there’s parking,” he nodded, his line of sight bouncing up and down between her and the bike. “I have to take your friend home first though,” he gestured to the back seats and the fools ogling the dog.
She nodded understandingly. “No worries, as long as she knows where I’ll be staying.”
He nodded, turning the engine over to the sleek car and pulling onto the street. He looked in his rear view mirror, pressing the button for Titan’s window to lower so he could stick his head out.

“Hey Nick!” You exclaimed, a smile growing on your face at the sight of the Orc’s presence. You worked in the armoury so you kept a record of which officers logged out which weapons and made sure inventory was always correct at the beginning and end of your shift. Since you were never outside the precinct, you weren’t obliged to wear an official police uniform, instead you were instructed to stick to business casual clothes. Today you had adorned your black jeans with an emerald green silk blouse that had the top three buttons left undone exposing the top of your chest to anyone who looked.
Nick gave you a beaming smile in return and you couldn’t help but notice the way his ears wiggled at the tips as he did so. “Hello, Miss (Y/L/ N).” You rolled your eyes at his formalness, “How many times do I have to tell you to call me (Y/N)? Now what can I do for you?” Nick pointed to the large sack he had resting over his shoulder, taking it off to gently place it on top of the counter, “I just need these logging back in please, (Y/N)” he gave you a pointed look as he said your name like you requested and you grinned enjoying the sound of your name coming from Nick.
You couldn’t help but crush on the Orc since you’d first met him, he was unlike any other guy you’d ever met before and it intrigued you. He was easily the sweetest guy in the entire precinct and after a long shift of rude entitled uniformed officers, talking to Nick was a refreshing encounter. You had never understood the prejudice against Orcs, how could someone hold a grudge over something that happened to their ancestors over two thousand years ago. It was just ridiculous. You were one of the few that wished everyone could just live in harmony.
With a small smile, you took the heavy sack and hauled it into the back, shouting through the metal gate to Nick as you started unloading the various guns and protective plates in the bag, “So Nick, got any plans tonight?” Ward was supposedly hosting a party tonight to celebrate avoiding death and whatnot but you knew it was his excuse to get as drunk as possible with the least amount of judgement. You’d received an invitation, everyone in the precinct had in fact apart from a select few but you’d been hesitant to agree to attend. You weren’t all that close to Ward, only having a few little chats here and there when he was the one to pick up the guns. Your closest friend who was invited was Terry who worked in the armoury with you but he was working tonight and therefore wouldn’t be attending.
Your decision tonight was solely based on Nick’s answer here. If he was going, you had an excuse to look your best. If he wasn’t, well what was one more night lounging in the living room watching television and ordering takeout. Nick folded his arms over his chest, “Ward’s having a get together I guess, he wants me to go but I’m not sure if it’s my kind of scene.”
You quickly set the rest of the items in place and walked back out front, leaning over the desk, resting on your forearms placing them close together, resulting in you pushing your breasts together and making your cleavage much more prominent. “Oh! You should come, I’m going and it would be nice to have a dance partner.” You flashed him a winning smile. Nick’s eyes darted all around as he tried his hardest not to stare at the exposed skin of your cleavage, “W-well perhaps I could come for a little bit, it’s not like I have anything else to do tonight.” “Great! I’ll see you there then.”
Nick looked down to hide his blush at your obvious excitement at him agreeing to come to the party. He told himself, ‘she’s just being friendly, don’t get your hopes up’. He raised his hand up as a wave goodbye and left the room, heading back to the corridor outside where Ward had been leaning against waiting for him to return so they could hand in their end of shift report. Daryl let out a sigh of relief at the sight of his partner, “Dude finally! What took you so long man?” Ward raised an eyebrow at Nick’s flustered face before smirking, “Oh I get it, you were flirting with (Y/L/N) again huh? You know she’s coming to the party tonight”
“I-I was not flirting! (Y/N) and I were merely conversing about whether or not I was coming to said party tonight.” Ward laughed, “Oh so you guys are on a first name basis now? What happened to ‘Miss (Y/L/N)’ huh?” Ward chuckled to himself as Nick only got more flustered and tried to splutter out excuses only for Ward to shut him down, “Listen I only have the patience to say this once, she likes you man so ‘Orc up’ or whatever and ask her out at the party.” Nick didn’t respond but he thought a lot about what Ward just said on his ride home. Was it possible? Could you really like him? I mean, he had always thought your conversations had a bit of a flirty and personal tone to them but he assumed you were just being friendly. He was just grateful to meet someone who didn’t immediately hate his guts based on his appearance that he didn’t want to ruin it by looking for a deeper meaning behind everything. But lately he had to admit to himself that you’d been appearing in his thoughts more than colleagues should think about each other.
_____
You huffed as you stood in front of your full length mirror in what felt like your twentieth outfit of the night. Your hands smoothed over the harsh fabric of the denim jacket before your face twisted into a scowl and you ripped your arms out of it and threw it on your bed, along with all the other clothes you’d tried on, checked yourself out in and then decided it wasn’t flattering.
Full of nerves, you chewed on your fingernail as you stared at your open closet as if the perfect outfit was going to fling itself at you and shout ‘wear me! wear me!’ You groaned and ran a hand over your face, contemplating on cancelling the whole night ahead. It had been an hour after you’d originally come out of the shower and now you were starting to feel hot from trying on all these clothes. In your eyes nothing was looking good on you and it was making you feel worse. But no. You’d already told Nick you were gonna be there, you couldn’t cancel on him like that. Really, you were just as much looking forward to seeing him dressed in something other than a police uniform.
With a deep sigh, you dug back into your closet and pulled out a pair of high waisted dark blue jeans that hugged your ass but weren’t uncomfortably tight and flared ever so slightly at the hem to give you that extra curvy silhouette. You picked out a black corset top that pushed the girls up very nicely and sucked your waist in to appear more hourglass. You made quick work of your hair and makeup as you were beginning to run out of time. You would have put more effort into it but you’d decided to spend the first hour of getting dressed picking the wrong clothes to wear and then decided on a similar combination as you would usually choose. You placed your shoes on just as your phone buzzed to let you know that your taxi had pulled up outside. Great timing.
You had to get out a couple houses down due to the street being blocked off by many cars, of which you assumed belonged to the partygoers of tonight. The music was loud to say the least, or to put it in better terms you were glad you weren’t Ward’s neighbour. You walked the short distance down the path and saw a few of the other women attending also in jeans and you immediately felt a lot better in your outfit choice. You tucked a strand of hair behind your ear as you walked past the crowded yard to get inside the house to greet the host. If there was one thing your parents taught you well, it was manners. The living room was the most crowded by far, ‘Jesus’ you thought to yourself, ‘Who knew Ward had this many friends?’ You squeezed yourself through a gap just say big enough to let you pass to enter through into the kitchen. Ward, his wife, and a few others were stood with drinks in hand, seemingly deep in conversation.
You stood straight and walked over, “Hey Ward, Sherri you look amazing, I didn’t realise it was this big of a party!” It felt awkward to shout everything over the music but they seemed to hear you fine. Sherri gave you a big smile and Ward nodded, “Glad you came, your boy isn’t here yet though so here, take a drink.” Ward handed you a plastic cup with a blue liquid inside, from the smell it was surely strong enough to calm your nerves. You felt your cheeks flush at the realisation that Ward knew about your crush on Nick or vice versa but perhaps you weren’t as discreet as you had thought. As if sensing your sudden discomfort, Sherri took your arm, “Come on, let’s dance, I love this song.” Before you could protest, your left arm was pulled forward into the crowd. You recognised a few faces and got a surprisingly large amount of ‘hi!’s, smiles, even a few hugs. It was amazing how friendly people got when they were tipsy though you doubt they’d remember that small detail of the night in the morning.
Sherri had only stuck around for a few minutes before disappearing to go back to her husband’s side not that you could blame her. You glanced around but Nick was still yet to be found. You weren’t allowed to be disappointed for long before another drink was shoved into your empty hand, this time it was pink and tasted a bit sweeter. Another twenty minutes had gone by and already the air inside was far too hot for your liking. You hunched down and began the difficult journey back out onto the front yard. You finally managed to get outside and leaned against the brick wall, sighing in relief as the cool breeze washed over your skin. Your eyes were closed so it was no surprise that you jumped from the feeling of a hand on your shoulder.
“Sorry! Didn’t mean to startle you, was just making sure you were okay” you stared back into Nick’s golden eyes. They looked even more beautiful up close. Your eyes darted over his markings, trying to trace the outline across his cheeks and forehead. You took in his outfit too, his navy blue hooded jacket and white t-shirt was a little baggy and yet it made him look even broader. Nick’s physique had always struck you as impressive and your mind wandered as you thought about what it would look like underneath the clothes. “(Y/N)?” You realised you hadn’t said anything yet, “Oh! Ye-yeah I’m fine, it was just a bit hot in there I needed some fresh air.” Your eyes lowered to the drink in his hand, “How long have you been here, I didn’t see you in there?” Nick followed your eyes to his bottle of beer, “About twenty minutes, I was going to look for you but all the scents, it was a bit much.” That was partially true, all the smells mixing together was more than a bit harsh on Nick’s sensitive Orc nose but it was also that he was incredibly nervous about seeing you. Ward telling him that you liked him had him drowning in self doubt all evening, to the point he was tempted to turn around and go home as soon as he arrived if it hadn’t been for Ward calling him to let him know that you had arrived and was looking for him. He wasn’t going to tell you that though.
Your finger circled the rim of the plastic cup in your hand as your body turned to the side to face Nick, biting your lip as you tried to think of something to say. You glanced up and saw Nick looking you up and down, an unreadable expression painted on his face. A wave of embarrassment flooded you and your arms couldn’t wrap around your waist quick enough, “Why are you looking at me like that?” You said with a light laugh, trying to disguise your insecurity, assuming Nick was judging you.
“Sorry! You just look really pretty tonight. Not that you don’t look pretty any other time, cause you don’t- I mean you do! I-I mean…” You couldn’t help but laugh at Nick fumbling over his words. You felt a lot better knowing you weren’t the only nervous one. Feeling a little brave from what little alcohol you had consumed, you pressed a finger against his lips to shut him up, “So you think I’m pretty?” You bit your lip and the way his cheeks turned a darker blue was merely delicious. Nick visibly swallowed, “I think you’re beautiful, and-and really nice too, like super nice, you’re probably the nicest woman I’ve ever met and I’ve met a lot of women. Not like that, it’s just with this job you meet a lot of people and not all of them are nice, especially humans, but you, you’ve always been nice to me.”
You couldn’t help the smile on your face, you felt a lot more at ease listening to Nick blabber on like he would always do during your little chats. It was so endearing, you loved it. Nick wore his heart on his sleeve and you thought it was positively adorable. When he noticed you hadn’t said anything once again, you were just smiling at him, he continued, “I don’t really know how to do this.”
“Do what?” You took a small step closer to him and his head dipped in shyness for a moment before raising it once again.
“Tell someone I like them.” Your cheeks were going to hurt soon with all the smiling you were doing. You giggled, “Me either, but we seem to be doing good so far.” At the mention of the word ‘we’ Nick’s eyes widened, “Really?” “Really.” Your attention was brought to his ears as they wiggled at the tips. Without thinking your hand reached up and you brushed your fingertips over his right ear. Your breath caught in your throat as Nick’s hand wrapped around your wrist, his grip gentle but firm. “Sorry, it’s just really cute when they do that.” Nick surprised you by bursting out in a laugh. At your confused expression, he explained, “That’s the first time I’ve ever been called cute.” You didn’t realise Nick was still holding onto your wrist until a pounding at the window next to you jerked you away from each other to see an inebriated Ward knocking on his living room window, his words of “Get a room!” barely audible over the music blaring out the open door. You rolled your eyes and Nick cleared his throat, “I don’t suppose you’d want to go grab a coffee sometime?”
“Why wait? I think I’ve had enough of this party to be honest.” Nick straightened up in surprise and his smile, oh his smile was just heart warming. He held his arm out for you and you happily took it, allowing him to lead you to his car at the end of the street. One of the good things about LA was that there was always somewhere open to get a coffee. As Nick’s hand rested on your thigh during the drive, you thought, perhaps you should go to parties more often.

Nick Jakoby (Bright):Oneshot- Extra
Tumblr media
It’s a pretty regular Saturday night. After your recovery, Ward decided to throw a little get together at his house. You were a bit flattered. Another part of you knows he just really wanted an excuse to have a party and get drunk.
Laughter and music filled the walls of his home as he told crazy stories. His wife by his side shaking her head with a smile. You grabbed a drink, chatting with a few officers until your eyes caught a certain orc. He was at the side just taking it all in. You know in these types of situations he felt a bit out of place. Excusing yourself, you grab another drink, heading over to him. Easing through the bodies, you smile when he makes eye contact. He gives a little awkward wave, and you lean on the wall next to him. Offering the drink. He takes it happily.
“T-Thank you.”
“It’s the least I can do for the guy that saved my life.” He looks down at his feet bashfully.
“It’s not that big a deal.”
“Are you kidding me, you went straight hulk on the guy. It was awesome!” He finally smiles, and it makes you happy. You take another swig at your beer, enjoying the happy faces around the room. Most days didn’t end so great. More often or not you were left mourning a friend, or family. So any opportunity to celebrate was a gift. A slower song comes on, and you can see Sherri pulling Ward to the center of the dance floor. The space clears, and a few officers get involved, slow dancing with their partners.
Your gaze drifts to Nick. He looks a bit more tense. He sends you a look before clearing his throat and placing down his drink. You raise a brow, putting down your own drink.
“Do you want to-I mean it’s not like I want to- I just thought you would want to..”
It’s kind of cute how tongue tied he’s become.
“You wanna dance with me?” You question.
“Not if you don’t want to!” He insists.
“I’d like to.” You say softly. You hold your hand out for him.
“Really!”
“Really.” You confirm.
“O-Okay.”
He takes your hand, leading you to the middle. Your eyes track his frame. Nick is pretty buff, even for an officer. The job sort of demanded a certain stature, but lately you feel like you’re getting to know a lot about him. Possibly because before now, you never gave him much of a second thought. He’s holding you as he moves with the music, and you can’t help but laugh internally at the distance.
“Nick, we aren’t in high school, you can hold me.”
You move in, adjusting his arms. He fumbles for a second, and now you’re both a lot closer. You can see how nervous he is, and he glances around.
“People are staring.” He mumbles. Your hand around his neck doesn’t loosen.
“You know it’s rude not to look at your partner when you’re dancing.” He straightens.
“S-Sorry.”
Now he’s completely focused. Sometimes it’s like he’s a teenager.
You take this rare opportunity to admire him. The many color patterns of his skin. His warm hands are placed comfortably on your waist. Those golden hues that feel almost magical. There’s so many differences that you never truly appreciated. You were so fixated on rising as an officer that you forgot Nick was going through exactly the same trials as you. Except he wasn’t afforded the luxury of voicing his annoyances.
“Nick, I really should have said this sooner. I’m so sorry. For the way I talked to you, treated you.”
He brushes it off.
“It’s fine.”
“It’s not. Nothing about it is fine.”
Nick looks at you fully this time, and he can see the regret you show. He sighs, and you become a bit flushed when his palm moves to your cheek.
“Thank you.”
You aren’t sure what it is exactly he’s thanking you for, but you just nod, a bit distracted. Nick’s eyes flicker to your lips, and for a fleeting moment you think maybe he wants to lean in. Somehow you find your body moving closer. You open your mouth to speak, but the song changes to a loud booming tune. Your little moment vanishes. Nick gathers himself, coughing as he releases you all together.
“I-I’m gonna get another drink. “
“Uhuh..”
You don’t fully take in his words. Your body turns with his, and you touch your cheek. You can still feel his warmth. A heat you never knew you needed.
~~
Things come to a close around two. Ward’s words of apparently he’s not as young as he used to be. You bid goodbye to some of your colleagues, and Nick comes back.
“Do you want a ride back?” You nod as you point to James who is passed out on the couch.
“My ride is currently occupied.” Nick laughs softly, as he guides you outside. You both get in, and the ride is fairly quiet, but surprisingly comfortable. Your house isn’t too far away. When he pulls up, you thank him, unbuckling your seatbelt. You open the door, and when Nick sees you sway lightly, he practically runs out the car.
“Whoo! I think those drinks finally caught up to me.”
He helps support you, asking for the key to help you get inside. You hand it over, and he opens the door, guiding you inside. You slip off your shoes, and stand up straight. When it looks like you won’t tumble, Nick removes his grip.
“I’m just a bit tipsy, that’s all. “
“Well have a good night officer (L/N).” Nick moves to leave, but you press your back to the door, blocking his way. It closes, and Nick does that cute little shuffle.
“D-Do you need something?” He asks.
“I want that kiss you were going to give me back at the party.”
His expression says it’s all. A mix of terror and surprise.
“I-I would never try to kiss you! N-Not that you’re aren't attractive or anything because you are! You really are. It's not like I think about that b-because that would be very inappropriate. “ He’s running himself in circles.
“Please..Nick..”
There was no warning at all. Nothing that told you that this would be your position. Standing here, asking Nick Jakoby for a kiss. His flustered babbles stop, and he internalizes the yearning expressed on your face. He’s convinced that this is all a fantasy, a delusion from too much alcohol consumption.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” you frown.
“Nick, I promise you I’m not drunk.”
“That’s not the biggest issue.”
He steps closer, placing his hand against the door. His entire demeanor has changed. You let out a shallow breath, because he’s so much closer, you can smell his cologne. You have no idea what it is, but it smells amazing. Those golden orbs are almost shining.
“Nick you-”
He leans in all the way, and you let out a soft gasp. The kiss is so sudden. His big hand moves to your neck, fingers brushing your throat. You shiver as he travels down. His touches now don’t hold even a hint of innocence as they previously did during the dance. It slides over your hips, and up under your shirt.
The skin contact makes you release a little moan as you arch into him. Nick lets out something akin to a growl, which urges another moan from you. You try your best to pull him as close as possible. Every kiss is like another shock that runs all through your body. Nick only parts to gather a breath. You’re breathing much heavier than he is, and you whimper when he begins leaving kisses along your neck.
“D-Do you want to come upstairs..” you sigh out.
“I..can’t..”
He forces out. You can tell from his voice that it’s taken everything in him to deny your offer. You grin, and he moves back.
“I should..get going..”
He still has you close, and you can tell that he wants to kiss you again.
“Just ten more minutes.”
He doesn't have a chance to refuse. You pounce on him, smiling.
Nick has very little complaints.

Kandomere x OC (Liren) Pt. 7
Tumblr media
Mikey looked up to see Liren jump out of the SUV. She's back early, he thought. Setting down his tools and wiping the dirt from his hands he jogged over to her. Even from a distance he could tell that she was angry, he noticed she wore a deep frown on her face, and was mumbling to herself. He sniffed and was immediately on the defensive. “Did something happen? You smell upset.”
“No,” she said curtly. Liren yanked the front door open and headed for her bedroom. Mikey crossed his arms and waited. Trying to give her enough space. He leaned against the door frame and waited a second more. “I’m fine. I got into it with the elf.”
An involuntary growl rumbled from his chest and he pulled her in, holding her tight. “I’ll kick his ass… if you didn’t already.” Liren gave a weak smile and shook her head. Mikey inhaled her scent. She still smelled like him and it filled him with longing. He had been craving her all day and dreading the conversation they needed to have. He prayed that she didn’t run for the hills. He swallowed and began to speak but Liren beat him to the punch.
“Mikey, I don’t know what was said this morning and I don’t know what your deal with Kandomere is but you two need to chill. We work together and I’m a big girl and I don’t need anyone to speak for me. Got it.” She glared at him. Mikey had never been so intimidated and turned on at the same time but he felt a little guilty. He apologized. He hadn’t meant to make her angry.
“Listen Liren… I know now's not the best time but I have something I need to tell you. It’s not that big of a deal but I just thought you should know- I- I mean it's not that big of a deal, but it kind of is… It’s been messing with my head all day.” He said all in a rush.
Liren gave him a confused, concerned look and then shook her head. “Please don’t say ‘I love you’, I can’t- it's not- I can’t do that right now.”
Mikey’s ears drooped a bit as his face flushed and waved his hands to clear the air. He knew that she hadn’t said that to wound him, but damn; it still hurt. He wasn't able to stop his mouth once it opened. “It’s not that. I mean you know I'm crazy about you. But it's something else. It’s a little embarrassing. And you have to know I can't control when it happens.” Liren’s eyes softened slightly and she placed her hands on her hips; he had her full attention. A knowing glance at his pelvis was almost enough to make him lose his nerve. She probably thought he had another boner. Which he did. “Lir, we’ve been spending a lot of time together and it's triggered… It’s started my… What I mean to say is, that I’ve gone into a heat cycle and I don’t want you to freak out,” he said hurriedly with his hands out in front of him, willing her not to run from him.
Mikey watched Lirens face change from confusion, to concern, to something that he couldn’t read, like she was buffering. She hadn’t gone running so he took that as a good sign. She ran a hand through her hair and motioned for him to follow. He thanked Jirak she’d moved away from her bedroom; her scent was strongest there. Liren dropped onto the couch. He loved that couch. It smelled like Liren. An image of her on that couch started forming in his head making it hard for him to concentrate. He’d been thinking about her all day. In all sorts of perverted twisted ways, the literal and physical sense. Mikey felt like a dirty pervert watching her now; the way she worried her lip shouldn't have sent his mind into the gutter, but oh it did. He thought about how soft they were and how they felt when she-
“Mikey, I'm sorry. I’m not really sure what to say. I didn’t know that was something to worry about so soon.” Mikey rubbed the back of his neck and sat across from her. It was minutely easier to think when she wasn’t so close. He wasn’t sure which of them was more uncomfortable at that moment. She smelled so damn good. All he could think about was touching her and tasting her. He tried to clear the lustful thoughts from his head and waited for Liren to say something, anything. “So what do you want to do?”
Mikey licked his lips and gripped the arms of his chair so that he could shift into a more comfortable position. He’d been hard the moment he saw her, wanting to tell her about all the dirty things he would to do to her, show her. Like how badly he wanted to rut with her on her big soft bed, and mark her over and over again, so that everyone knew she was his. He wanted to bury himself inside her and make her his mate, for real. He wished he were better with his words and could tell her about all the things he wanted for them. How much he really wanted her. But this lust gave him tunnel vision and clouded his judgment. There was a primal urge to simply throw her over his shoulder and mate with her until he knew his seed had taken root, and that scared the shit out of him. He’d never thought about when he’d have little orclings before. But all the sudden images of those thoughts were flooding his head. He had enough sense to keep his mouth shut about that. That’d spook Liren for sure. Because it scared him a little too.
“Earth to Mikey… Are you still there?”
“I’m sorry Lir. I was just thinking. It probably wasn’t a good idea for me to be here. I’m sure you’ve heard about heat cycles before. It’s not fair to drop all this on you. I can’t even think straight around you right now.” Liren sat up and gave him a sympathetic look. She ran a hand through her hair and went to the kitchen. He watched her dig around in the fridge for a moment, she turned and tossed him a beer.
Liren sipped her own glass of water and fiddled with her nails. “You look like you need it. I’ve heard about it, sure. But I’m not very knowledgeable. Gemma didn’t have much to say about it. I just know there’s lots of fucking.” A pretty blush painted her cheeks as she finished that last part. The Liren that had scolded him earlier was gone and the shier version of her made its appearance.
“Well you're not wrong about that,” he said sheepishly. “It can be a little intense at times, or so I’ve heard. If you were an orc I wouldn’t be so worried.”
Liren cocked her head to the side, with her eyebrows pinched together, “What’d you mean? Do you think you’ll hurt me if we were to go at it right now?” It was an honest question but it made him feel like shit to answer it.
“I don’t know.” He softened his voice and tried to explain himself. “Liren, I’ve been trying really hard not to hurt you. I know you’re strong. But we are built differently. I’m always afraid I’m going to cut you with these,” he gestured to his fang-like tusks. “It’s a miracle I haven’t nicked your thighs yet.” He hated to admit that to her. He loved the way Liren tasted, and his human friends had always gone on and on about that particular activity, and how their women loved it, and even though he enjoyed it too, it scared him. Orc’s didn’t participate in that particular activity for obvious reasons. It was mostly a human custom that he had only become aware of in recent years. He felt a little ashamed that he had even tried such a thing with Liren, putting her at risk of being cut by him, but he hadn’t wanted her to be disappointed with him. And as much as he loved eating her, it was still risky.
“Mikey, I didn’t know you were so worried about that. I wish you would have told me. We don’t have to do that anymore.” She approached him slowly and squeezed his hand. The contact was gentle but it sent fire shooting through his veins.
“Lir, I shouldn’t stay too long. All I can think about is,” he looked her up and down and caressed her fingers. “I’m sorry about being an ass to the elf but he’s got the hots for you and I can't stand it. So I guess I’m not too sorry about it.” Liren let go of his hand and covered her mouth.
She chuckled to herself for a moment and shook her head, “I think you’ve got that all wrong Mike. Kandomere doesn’t see me that way.”
Mikey rose from his chair and stared down at Liren. “Baby, I think you’ve got it wrong. He most definitely does. That's why I said what I did. I didn’t want him sniffing around what's mine.” A low growl rose up from his chest. “If he wants a challenge-”
Liren pressed a hand to his chest, like she was trying to quiet the rumblings inside him, “Calm down bucko, no one is challenging anyone. It’s just the hormones talking.” Liren was trying to keep the mood light but wasn’t completely successful. His cock was aching in his jeans and Liren was still touching him; her hand like a hot iron sizzling through his shirt. He leaned down for a whiff of her hair. “Mikey, I… I know this is a big deal for you and I can’t understand what it’s like, I don’t really have anything to compare it to, other than blue balls. But I don’t know if that's a very good comparison. ”
Mikey let out a laugh and nodded. “I suppose it's not the worst way to describe it, not very in depth though. It’s more primal than that. It’s being with your mate and giving into those urges that are buried beneath the surface. It’s about connection and procreating. Binding. If you were an orc we would probably be synced up by now.” He sniffed again and let out a relieved sigh. “You’re not fertile yet.”
A mad blush crept up Liren’s neck to her face, “Excuse me! Don’t say shit like that out loud,” she swatted him. “I didn’t know you could tell that so easily.”
Mikey grinned and pushed hair out of her face, “Of course I can. I know when you want me too.” And those words did the trick. She covered her face and moaned into her hands. The sound made his cock twitch.
“Oh my god. That’s not embarrassing at all.”
Mikey agreed with her, “It’s not. You humans are so squeamish about these things. I don’t understand it.”
“Mikey, I was raised Southern Baptist, it's been ingrained.”
After talking with his dad, and now Liren, Mikey decided it would be best to keep his distance from her for now, until he was out of this heat cycle. He was freaking out a little. But he wanted to tell her in person why he wouldn’t be around for a bit, so there were no misunderstandings between the two of them. It was really just an excuse so he could get a glimpse of her one more time before quitting cold turkey. Every instinct in him told him to move forward and take her with him. Be with her. But she was holding back, like she was unsure of what to do. The hand that she placed on his chest before warmed him but those same hands covered her face, and twitched as she tried to keep them still at her side. She was withdrawing. Mikey hoped he hadn’t freaked her out too much.
“So what do we do now,” she asked quietly.
His heart was beating in his chest, rising up into his throat, but he swallowed it down. “I should probably go, for a while. Till this is over,” he said sheepishly. Liren only nodded and he forced himself to go to the door instead of her. “I’ll see you in a couple of days.”
Liren’s head was spinning. That was not how she pictured the conversation with Mikey going. He’d thrown her for a loop… And she felt horrible about it. She had been taken by surprise and felt like she hadn’t handled the situation as well as she could have. She had tried to be gentle with him, as much as he was with her, and she was worried that she might have hurt him by letting him leave. The whole thing was too fast. Heat! He had scared her a little with his confession. Liren knew that it was serious and not to be taken lightly. Not that she took Mikey or his feelings lightly. She sat on her couch and pondered on the whole thing after he had gone. So many questions raced through her head. Had she been wrong to let him leave, was she being too cold? Should I tell him to come back? She couldn’t lie to herself and say that she hadn’t been a little afraid at some of the confessions he shared with her. She hadn’t had any idea Orc’s didn’t do oral. They had always been careful. She realized Mikey had been more so than her, in more ways than one. She rested her chin in her hand, and thought about how clueless she had been this whole time. Maybe the time apart would be a good thing, she could think about Mikey and figure what he was to her. She had choked on her coffee before, when Montehugh had called him her boyfriend, and hadn’t forgotten about the reaction. She had done it unconsciously and perhaps that was her sign that she needed to get her shit together where Mikey was concerned.
Some of his behavior made sense the more she thought about it. Perhaps that's why he and Kandomere were butting heads so much. They could sense it or smell it in the air. And Kandomere… Mikey had to be mistaken. Maybe his sense of smell was off, his hormones were in hyperdrive right now, and he probably saw every male as a threat. Not that Mikey had anything to worry about because Kandomere was not interested in her in that way. Liren hated herself for making everything so messy. She liked Mikey and couldn’t understand why it was so damn hard for her to just admit it. There was something inside her that just wouldn’t let her do it. At first she thought it was Kandomere and her attraction to him, which was problematic for its own reasons, but that wasn’t quite it… There was a small part of her that felt like maybe she wasn’t good enough for Mickey.
And she was with Mikey. Wasn’t she? Yes. She was. He was a good guy. And they were good together, she thought so, Gemma seemed to think so. And they had good sex, really good sex… Surely she could handle this… heat cycle situation. The only thing that scared her was that Mickey held back and that she hadn’t known. She might have approached things differently. Like using a safeword or something. He had never hurt her before and she trusted him not too. She decided that she would text him, asking him to come back, and bring an overnight bag. Later.
She wanted a little time to pull herself together before Mikey came back. She needed to work off any lingering frustration she had from this crazy day. Most of the staff was heading home by the time she made her way to the back of the grounds, towards the Solis Tree. She stopped short, trying to recall what day it was, and whether it was time to feed the tree again. Liren took a peek and decided it wasn’t quite time for it yet. But the bowl at its base and the feeder in its branches were empty. She grabbed the bowl and hurried back to the house to fill it. Once inside she checks her phone, half hoping there would be a notification over the text bubble. Instead there was one missed call, from Kandomere. She pointedly decided to ignore it and the voicemail he’d left. She’d listen to it after watering.
He was probably calling to say that they would no longer need her services, or that her behavior today had been unacceptable, or something along those lines. But he had been an ass too so she didn’t feel bad when she left her phone on the counter and walked away.
Earlier…
Kandomere chewed the inside of his lip and gripped the steering wheel. He was still burning when Liren exited the vehicle. Liren had completely overreacted. She had no reason to behave the way she did. Or speak to him that way. He wasn’t even sure why she had reacted that way. Kandomere would have remained silent on the Michael issue but she wouldn't leave things alone. He blamed the orc boy for this. If he had only kept his mouth shut. Ulysses should have remained quiet as well. Kandomere could smell the orc all over Liren. It was a constant reminder that she didn’t belong to him, that she wasn’t his, and he needed to let the fleeting fantasy stay just that. He could be content working with her even if she was a pain in his ass. And a brat. Even though it wouldn’t be forever.
“Listen Boss, about Liren…” Kandomere shot him a look and let out a sharp sigh.
“I know.” There was a small silence between them as they traveled back to the office, his speed much slower than it had been. After Liren’s outburst, Kandomere called the search off for the day, and quickly drove Liren home. It had felt like she had burned him with her heated gaze and sharp tongue. A part of him wanted to stop her from leaving but he knew better than to try when they were both angry. He would approach her when both their tempers had cooled and preferably when his busy body partner wasn’t around to interfere. It was important to him that he do this right. He didn’t want her to be angry with him, even if he hadn’t done anything wrong. Though he had spoken to her a bit sharply… He would apologize for that even if she had been wrong about the whole Michael thing. It pained Kandomere a bit to know she thought so little of him and his character. But they hadn't known eachother very long. She wouldn’t have known how wrong she was about him. Hoped she knew that he wasn’t really like that.
As Kandomere and Ulysses took the elevator all the way up to the top floor, to his office, he still had the hot headed elemental on his mind. While he sat at his desk, trying to catch up on the growing pile of paperwork, he found himself unable to concentrate on the reports in front of him. After an hour and barely a fraction of the stack reviewed, Kandomere gave up, and dialed Lirens number. It rang and went to voicemail. Not surprising. He left her a short voicemail and politely informed her that he wished to speak with her again and apologize about their discussion this morning. He said his goodbyes to the remaining staff and Ulysses, palmed his keys, and pretended not to notice the knowing smirk on Ulysses face.
Kandomere continued to collect his thoughts on the drive back to Lirens. They needed her, and as much as he hated to grovel, he would if need be. He wouldn’t put the case in jeopardy. If he hadn’t already. This case was troubling enough on his own, and Liren. Well… she was maddening on her own too. Frustrating. If not a bit odd.
He eased into her driveway and pulled up in front of her house. He listened for a moment and knocked on her door. He heard the pause of clomping boots then the latch of the door clicking open. Liren stood a bit wide eyed before him, the shock on her face evident. He apologized for having startled her, “it seems you didn’t get my message. Perhaps I should have waited till tomorrow but I wasn’t sure if you would be joining us again,” he trailed off. Then he noticed what she was holding.
In her hands was a bowl of milk. “Do you have a cat?” he asked out of curiosity. The thought slipping from his lips involuntarily made him cringe. Liren gave him a goofy grin, and shrugged, “You could say that. Come with me and I’ll show you. But keep your distance, Franklin is a little shy of strangers.” There was a child-like gleam in her eye and a bounce in her step as she went through the french doors into the backyard. Kandomere was a bit dazed by the drastic change of temperament from that of this morning. She led him down the path, not speaking a word, to the small gated grove where a small cluster of magical trees grew. Remaining outside the gate, he watched her set the bowl in front of the tree and gave it a pat. There was a bird feeder in its branches, she took it down, and gave a sharp whistle. The chatter of a fairy was heard and then it fluttered down from its perch in the tree. Liren held her arm out and the little pest landed. Kandomere politely held back the grimace that threatened to grace his lips. Fairies were widely considered pests. One fairy was a pest, anymore than that was a problem. Kandomere eyed the tree casually looking for more.
Liren asked after its well-being, cooing at it and rubbing its ugly, little, blue head. “This is Franklin, the nursery cat. Not everyone is fond of fairies, but I couldn’t get rid of him. I found him here one morning with his wing broken. Things between us were rocky at first. He’s a biter. But now he’s one of the family.” Liren turned to face him and Franklin gave a high pitched screech and hissed at Kandomere.
Kandomere openly sneered at the pest, “nasty little thing isn’t he.”
“He most certainly is not'', Liren huffed, “he’s very neat, and he keeps watch over this tree.” She stroked the little beast's wing gently before setting it down by the bowl. Kandomere chuckled. {Only Liren.} Liren’s head shot up at the sound, never having heard him laugh before.
“Do you take in all the strays you find?” Her brows pinched in contemplation and shook her head.
“No, only the special ones”, she said, turning from the fairy, with hands on her hips. There was a far away look in her eyes when she turned away from him, and knelt to pet the fairy’s wing. “I know how it feels to be broken. I was lucky enough to find people that looked after me till I was on my feet. And it’s the least I can do for this little guy.”
“What really happened in Atlanta, Liren?”
She took a breath and straightened her shoulders. It seemed like she remembered that she was still angry with him and she turned her back to him. “Like I said before, I made a mistake…” she hesitated. “I trusted the wrong person.”
Kandomere’s sucked in a breath. “And you’re still running from that mistake.” Round eyes turned on him and he could see the unease there. That was it. Kandomere wanted to reach out and touch her, to comfort her, but he kept his hands at his sides. He wasn’t sure how she would react if he touched her now. Or why he wanted to so badly. She was mute for a minute. Her mouth opened and shut a few times before she spoke again.
“I’m sorry about today,” she said quickly.
“So am I.” He willed her to understand. Not just about today but about whatever it was that plagued her. Something shifted in her eyes and she turned away, back to the fairy for a moment, and filled his feeder with the scratch feed nearby.
“I was eighteen, about to start my freshman year when I met him. It was like falling into the perfect storm.” Kandomere saw how she struggled with her decision to speak, as she swallowed and wrapped her arms around herself, like the action would protect her from what she was about to say. “Everything was fine in the beginning. He was charming and I thought I was in love. But he wasn’t who I thought he was, and he dragged me into things I should never have been a part of. And his temper…” She wiped her hands on her thighs and looked down. “I left when he put me in the hospital a second time.”
Kandomere was silent. He’d thought perhaps she’d been in trouble for the use of her magic, but it had been a man. It wasn’t what he expected to hear, a man.
“Did you contact the authorities?” She laughed bitterly. And her dim eyes looked so deeply into his, Kandomere fought the urge to squirm under her scrutiny. It seemed like she was searching for something.
“I did. And they did nothing. Told ‘us’ to keep it down. They wouldn’t touch him. Never even filed a report.” The fairy buzzed by her feet and shoved corn into its mouth. She gave a halfhearted smile to the little fellow and moved away toward the gate, passing by Kandomere. “I’m sure you’ve noticed that the police tend to stay out of the Elven districts.”
That caught his attention and Kandomere frowned. “He was an elf”, he said more as a question, than a realization.
“Yes.”
“And your family?” He asked softly. Wondering why she hadn’t returned home. What she told him next didn’t surprise him at all.
“I had to cut ties with them. He’d threatened me with them before,” Her bottom lip quivered a moment and she had to bite the inside of her lip to make it stop. Her body trembled and her arms tightened around herself. “He always made good on his promises.”
Her voice was distant and fragile as Kandomere listened to the rest of her story. It bothered him to see someone like Liren, who was so bright and full of life this way. In the short time he had known her, he would never have thought she had been through such trauma. She always seemed so cheerful and carefree; he never would have known. But then the ones who are hurting the most often hide behind practiced smiles and false laughs. Her confession rocked him. But it all was starting to make sense. Of course she would have gotten no help. “I am sorry that happened to you. Not all elves are like that.”
Liren gave him a knowing, little smile. She crept closer to him and tapped the gorget at his neck. “I know.” The lump in his throat tightened a fraction. “I shouldn’t have said that.” Kandomere crouched down and tossed corn to Frank. The creature hissed and funneled it into its mouth. Liren cleared her throat and motioned it was time for the two of them to leave. “Goodnight Frank”, she called, leading Kandomere into the gardens, the long way back toward the house.
Kandomere decidedly did not care for the fairy. But Liren did. She cared for the pests and the miscreants. And learning what she’d been though he couldn’t help but admire her even more. Her poor treatment from one of his own race shamed him. He would never hit a woman. Human, Elf, Orc or otherwise. And yet she remained kindhearted. Kandomere couldn't help but think of her as a small wonder.
“Kandomere?”
“Yes?”
“Don’t tell anyone about what I told you tonight. Please.” Her eyes begged him. "I-I haven’t told anyone. Only Gemma knows.”
He didn’t stop himself this time as he reached out and touched her arm. “I wouldn’t betray your confidence. It will remain between the two of us.” He heard her quick inhale and how she stood stock still at his touch. He wondered if she was afraid of him too after today? He quickly lowered his hand and they continued down the path.
The walk back to her home was a short one but they took their time in prolonging it. She’d inspect a plant here and there. And he would ask her the names of one here and there as well. Other than that, Liren was quiet at his side; her confession having made her shy. As they reached her door, Kandomere found himself unable to leave, leave her in this saddened state. Even if their rift from earlier had been settled for now. When she realized he had not moved to leave yet, she left the door open. As he followed behind, Kandomere pondered how to ease her discomfort. “I appreciate you sharing that with me. I… am not sure how to… I’d like to tell you something as well.” {What are you doing?}
“This belonged to my fathers father”, he said, tapping the silver plate at his chest. “It's a family heirloom. I believe you know the meaning of the words.” Liren nodded with a serious look on her red face. He knew she didn’t like it. She had given it ugly looks when she thought he wasn’t paying attention. “I don’t wear it for the words that are written but in reverence of my father.” Liren situated herself on the couch and Kandomere placed himself at the other end.
“It was passed down to him, as is tradition. But my father never believed in that ideology. He wore it for a different reason once he met my mother…As a giant fuck you to the others.” Kandomere paused and pictured her face. “You see my mother was human.” Liren stared at him wide eyed. He could see the wheels turning in her head. “Naturally my grandmother did not approve of the union. He married her anyway. Abandoning elven tradition and the family for a time.” Liren shifted and moved closer. His story seeming to draw her in. Her eyes told him to go on. “Once my sisters and I were born, my grandmother let go of some of that snobbery. And when my parents passed on she tried her best to steer us down the right path. My sisters fared better in that aspect than I did,” he paused. “I’ve become the black sheep of the family just like he was.” Kandomere glanced at Liren and she shook her head.
“Black sheep? She didn’t think the Magical Task Force was the right path for you.”
Kandomere nodded. “I’m sure you’ve noticed that most elves don’t venture far from the elven cities, for business or otherwise.”
“I have. I’ve also noticed you're not like most elves. And that's neither good nor bad. Just different”, she said plainly.
“I didn’t want you to think-”
“That you were a bigot with pointy ears”, she offered. A bright blush staining her cheeks. Kandomere gave her a mild smirk. “I am sorry about what I said. I totally thought that at first. But the more I thought about it, that didn’t make much sense.”
“How so?”
“It's the way you are with Montehugh. Speaking Bodzvokhan… It’s not very usual to meet an elf that speaks Orcish, ya know. It’s a dead give away.”
Kandomere nodded in agreement. “I wanted to be able to connect. Half of the community looks down on my family, and what my father did. I noticed from an early age they treated my family in a way that was similar to the Orcish community, only less hostile. And that is only because of my Abuela’s family. They still hold some standing.”
Liren mulled over what he was saying and felt like a total asshole for having judged him so harshly. “I had no idea. I’m sure it was rough growing up like that. No one deserves to be treated any differently than the rest, but your grandmother sounds like a force to be reckoned with.”
“Yes, she certainly is. I suppose that is where I get a certain amount of my pretentiousness from.”
Liren laughed and pressed her lips together. “I couldn’t say.”
Kandomere caught the gleam in her eye. Her playful mannering trying to peek through. “Liar. Even I know I can be a bit… snobbish at times?”
“My, my, we are going deep if you can admit that out loud,” she laughed.
The conversation of family carried on for a while. Each taking a turn telling a fond memory or two. Liren was surprised at how affectionately Kandomere spoke of his grandmother and sisters even if there was a small wedge between them. She hadn’t seen that type of affection in Fin. And he had never really told her about his family. At least not in detail, everything very generic. And even now she wasn’t sure if that information had been about his real family or the coven. But she really liked Kandomere’s version of family, they had their rough patches too, and it made him seem so normal, relatable.
“I find it very comfortable here”, Kandomere gestured to his surroundings. “I notice very little judgment from you, and the people here.” His own openness took him aback. He had expected an argument and more heated words, not this polite conversation and sharing. The mutual interest.
Liren chortled and folded herself onto the sofa. “That's not a very accurate assumption agent. Have you forgotten earlier today? And I was very critical of you when we first met as I'm sure you’re aware. And I thought for sure you would never step foot in this house again after the night of the party… you know when everyone was gawking over you.”
Kandomere digested that information and his mouth twisted a bit. “I don’t take that personally. I believe you were right when you said that elves are not often seen in the area.” The staring was a common occurrence anywhere but in Elftown. “I meant that this place is a haven of sorts. Not only is it beautiful here, it's peaceful. You’ve made a safe space for the different races. There’s hardly any animosity here. Before us.” He was referring to the MTF crowding in on her. Liren nodded in understanding.
“I wish it were always that way. We have our good days and bad days here, and it isn't just me. Gemma is like the glue around here. If it weren’t for her, half of my orcish neighbors wouldn’t support this place. Clan politics still play a part.”
Kandomere nodded and sat in the chair across from her. {And the orc boy.} “Still. It's a small wonder… You’ll have to pass my compliments along to Gemma as well.”
Liren covered a small laugh with her hand. “I’m sure she would love to hear that coming from you. She rather likes you.”
A brow arched on his forehead and Kandomere studied Liren some more. She held a small decorative pillow in her lap and seemed to be watching for his reaction. Her green eyes ever watching. “Does she? I’m glad. She seems like a good person to have in your corner,” he said dodging her flattery.
Liren let it slide. “Yes she is. Gemma and Nick are the best people I know. You never have to wonder what you are getting with them. They are, what they are. It’s rare to find people with such goodness in them.” Liren stretched her legs out from under her, stood, and moved to the kitchen. “Would you like something to drink Kandomere?” Ever the hostess. She was so casual saying his name. He liked the way she said it. The setting was mildly intimate and put him at ease in a sense that was new to him.
“Whatever you're having would be lovely.” He watched as Liren flitted from here to there, leaning on her tiptoes to reach a glass just barely out of grasp. Again his eyes were drawn to the marking on the back of her neck. He’d thus far mapped out most of her visible tattoos and wondered what had made her choose them. Perhaps he’d ask her. She turned back to him and offered him a glass of, he sniffed… peach flavored tea. He sipped it as Liren watched him covertly for his reaction, approval or dislike of what she had chosen. And again Kandomere was surprised to find he enjoyed something he thought he would dislike immediately. Just as he once thought about Liren.
He had yet to figure out just what it was about her that fascinated him so much. Yes, he thought she was beautiful. Perhaps not in the classic sense, or by any elven standard, but Kandomere didn’t subscribe to most elven standards. Liren had this magnetism about her. Her aura pulled him in and her kindness was constant. It dumbfounded him how she could still be the way she was after what she had experienced. She was utterly lovely no matter how he looked at her. She was gentle and sweet but there was this fire in her eyes that fascinated him. He saw the reflection of it in his rearview mirror many times, while she and Ulyesses verbally bombarded one another, or today when she turned that fire on him. Perhaps that's what had him so enthralled with her, their spark, the flare to them. Her sense of humor amused him as well. Or perhaps her ability to take on his rather gruff partner with finesse.
“I’ll see you in the morning. We’ll start with the place you suggested first.
“Okay. See you tomorrow.” She waved goodbye to Kandomere and returned inside. Feeling drained, she sat back down on the couch. No matter how much she enjoyed talking with Kandomere, she was tired. All the talking and thinking of Fin had zapped some of her energy. That’s how he had always been, always taking, never giving back. Liren shook her head. She hated how she still thought about him from time to time. She had cared about him so much and it broke her heart when he turned on her. It took a long time to get where she was. She was still working on parts of herself that had nearly died with the volatile elf. She had been changed by him on the inside. She was too cautious, even now, but she found ways to bring herself back. The tattoos had been the first step on her road to healing and she loved them. They made her feel pretty. Having the ability to make something beautiful, both in her gardens or on her skin, after being in the dark for so long, was freeing in a way that was hard for her to describe sometimes. Liren still struggled to let people in, truly in, to feel anything but that gnawing sense of worry. The ink on her skin had helped calm her for a time, having the control to choose what she wanted, to make something beautiful, sparked a joy in her. And Serafin would have hated them. Which made her love them more.
Liren found that same joy in landscaping and cultivating her own garden. Serafin would have thought it beneath him, low class. But it made her happy. And the gym, that was to make her strong, stronger than she had been. She was strong enough to defend herself now.
Which reminded her of what she needed to do. She picked up her phone and typed out what she should have said earlier that day, to Mikey. He didn’t respond right away and Liren worried she had messed up. Had Mikey tired of her wishy washiness? Liren chewed her lip and tried not to overthink it. So she made dinner and tried not to look at her phone. She called Gemma and they talked for at least an hour. There was so much that they needed to catch up on, work and personal. Liren had missed her. Gemma said the same. Gemma had also shed a little more light on the whole heat thing. At least what she had heard from others, Gemma had never experienced it firsthand. She assured Liren that Mikey would be okay, it would just be a rough week, he might be a little snappy, maybe a little in his feelings, but he would get over it. “That’s some good pussay you got if he’s already so-”
Liren squealed, “Oh my god stop! Never say that again!”
Gemma’s righteous laughter filled the phone and Liren mentally flicked her off. “That’s it, you’ve embarrassed me enough for tonight. I’m hanging up,” Liren said finally.
“Oh stop being so shy, we both know you’re not. Don’t worry about Mike. And if you do. Well, just give him a call for some of that sweet loving and all will be well.” Liren gave her a vulgar reply and ended the call. Gemma.
Liren almost called him. She thought better of it, deciding she might come off as too needy. So she put on a movie and got her things ready for the morning.
She hoped tomorrow would be better. Kandomere’s visit had been unexpected; especially after how she reacted. Though Kandomere had forgiven her, Liren was embarrassed she’d made such an ass of herself. She’d done a very good job of that today. And she had been so wrong. Kandomere wasn’t the prick that he pretended to be. Perhaps… Her phone chimed. Liren hurried to the counter where she had banished it and quickly read the text. Mikey.
He said that he was fine and asked if he could call her. She quickly typed out a response and her phone rang shortly after. “Hey Hot Stuff, what's with the sad tone text? You feeling bad for me or somethin’?”
“I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t… I want you to come back. I shouldn’t have let you leave.”
Mikey sighed and his voice was strained. “Liren, I’ll be alright. As much as I want to be with you right now, it's probably for the best I stay here. I meant what I said. I’m worried I’d hurt you.”
Liren let out her own sigh, “I hear you but I just wanted you to know that I trust you not to. I just feel like I messed up you with you today and I don’t want to go to bed thinking that you're upset with me. I want to… take care of you too I guess. Even if that means being ravaged all night. It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make,” she laughed lightly, hoping he’d give in and give her a second chance.
“Lir, baby, nothings messed up. Just me right now. I don’t want to push you too fast. And my heat cycle is kinda-”
“I can do fast. Promise…” There was a small pause and Liren thought Mikey might not cave on this. “Tell you what, I’m going to clean up a few things, and I hope to see you here in the next fifteen minutes. I- I need you.”
She could hear his heavy breathing and all he said was, “I’m on my way.”
She didn’t have to wait long till there was a sound at her door, the back door. She thought it strange, Mikey wouldn’t come in that way, Liren tensed. Glancing out the window she saw no one there. How strange. Then there was a knock at the front door. Liren hurried to it, her heart beating a little drum as she opened it. She barely had time to ready herself before Mikey had his hands on her, in her hair. He let her go long enough to set his overnight bag down and let Liren right herself.
“Say the word if I get to be too much and I’ll go.” Liren reached up to put her arms around his neck and gently butt her head against his.
“I promise. But maybe we need a safe word?” Mikey chuckled and nodded.
“Any ideas,” he asked.
“Um, how about Pineapples. I saw this Kevin Hart show and thought it was funny-”
Mikey scooped Liren up and hauled her to the couch. “Good enough for me.” Liren noted how his chest heaved and was quick to have her on top of him. As she seated herself in his lap he nuzzled her neck, peppering kisses there, grazing her with his tusks. Liren pulled back to return a kiss to his lips and noticed how wide his pupils were, whoa. She could tell he was trying to go slow for her benefit. Ease her into it. Bless him, sweet orc. Liren pushed off of Mikey’s lap and tugged at his shirt. It flew off. She moved to his fly and the growl that came out of him made her still momentarily. She’d never heard a sound like that come out of him before. It was kinda fuckin hot. Mikey didn’t give her but a second to pull herself together before he ripped his pants down his legs, and shucked Liren out of hers. His fingers went to her core and slid through the wetness pooled there, and stretched her. He didn’t linger there long before he was pressing his cock into her. Liren let out a breathy moan and slid down his shaft. Mikey huffed under her and nudged her with his hips as she rose to meet him. Mikey let out a strangled “fuck” and set a steady pace between them. He came, but kept Liren seat on his cock, and began again. He seemed a little steadier now, and ran his hands all over her, finally removing her shirt, and lashing her chest with attention. “Jirak, you’re perfect.” Liren beamed at the compliment and rolled her hips, sending Mikey into a completely different orbit.
Liren woke the next morning, absolutely sated and exhausted. She didn’t know what time they’d finally gone to bed. Mikey had kept her up till the late hours of the night until he finally tired. He had been… like an animal with her. He’d growled and roared in her ear, sending her over the edge too many times for her to keep track of. “Mine,” he’d said over and over again. The possessiveness might have bothered her if she hadn’t known how the heat cycle would make him act. But even knowing… she hadn’t been ready for the dicking down she’d gotten. Her legs were so sore, not painfully so, but they ached with overuse. And her vagina… May it rest in peace. Liren had to wiggle out of Mikey’s grip. Even in his sleep he hadn’t turned her loose. He’d molded his body around hers and kept his arm snug around her middle.
In the shower Liren gave herself a good scrub and marinated under the hot spray, letting her tired muscles soak in the warmth. The bathroom door opened and closed as Mikey trailed in. She’d expected him to sleep longer, he ought to have been exhausted from his studly night time activities, but he’d eased under the spray with her and pressed himself behind her. She felt how awake certain parts of him were as he leaned down to kiss her head. “You okay?”
“Mhmm, just tired. You?” He hummed in her ear and pressed his fingers into her shoulders. Liren let out a small sigh as he kneaded her back and he kissed her slick skin.
“I’m sorry you’re so tired. I’ll make it up to you for keeping you up so late.” Another kiss at her neck and his hands continued their path down her spine, till they landed on her ass, taking the globes of her ass in a gentle squeeze. “I want you one more time before you leave.” Liren pressed against him in agreement and Mikey was so gentle with her. He was on his knees, under the spray, lapping at her as the water trickled down her body. He made her come before he fucked her this time. Lirens legs wobble when she finally escaped from the shower ten minutes later than she should have. She’d had to hurry after cleaning herself a second time and rushed through breakfast. Mikey watched her with more intensity than he normally did. She finally pinned him with a look and told him no. “I don’t have time, not even for a quickie.” She gave him a quick kiss and untangled herself from his grasp as she moved toward the door.
“Anything special you want me to work on outback,” he asked huskily, still trying to get her to change her mind.
“Not in particular, actually could you take a look at the side door. I think one of the branches is hitting it when the wind picks up. I thought you were knocking there last night.” Mikey shook his head and promised to trim the branches back and knock off a few things off her to-do list. Liren gave him a pleased grin and headed out the door as the black SUV rolled up. She realized she had put on two different shoes in her haste to make it out the door before Kandomere and Montehugh rolled up, catching her making the walk of shame out of her own house. The den of iniquity. Liren laughed at herself as she sipped her coffee and hauled herself into the SUV.
Thankfully Montehugh was on his best behavior and Kandomere was back to his usual self for most of the morning even though she and Kandomere didn’t speak much and Montehugh pointed out her mismatched foot wear after their first stop. She shrugged it off and feigned ignorance. And the day went on.
The next place they searched had two flights of stairs and Liren groaned as she forced herself to make the trek up to the third story. Kandomere gave her a questioning look as Montehugh huffed along beside her, and she waved his concern away. “New workout, sore, keep going.” She thought she’d heard him chuckle at her but Kandomere didn’t chuckle. But he had yesterday.
At lunchtime Liren nearly collapsed into her seat from exhaustion, her legs were still weak after the stairs, and her stupid shoes were bothering her. She rested her head against the window as Kandomere carted them down the highway, and she closed her eyes, just for a second. That’s what it’d felt like at least. When she opened them again, the car had stopped and Kandomere and Montehugh were making their way back to the car. “Well hello Sleeping Beauty. Didn’t get enough beauty rest last night?”
Liren flushed and gave him a snarky reply. She apologized to Kandomere and fussed that they should have woken her. Kandomere replied that they hadn’t really needed her for this particular stop and brushed away her concern. He was uncharacteristically unfazed by it and even showed a bit of concern, “We can finish up early today if you’d like and pick up again tomorrow.”
“No, no, we’re already out here, let’s just keep going,” she said trying to stifle a yawn. Kandomere’s brow rose at her false bravado and turned the car towards the nearest exit. Liren immediately objected and told him to turn the car around. “I’ve had my power nap and am ready to go. Good as new.” Kandomere gave her that same look and shook his head.
“You’re exhausted. For whatever reason.”
Liren shot him a warning look that she didn’t want to talk about it. “Yes, but ready to chase down a wand all the same.”
“Daniels, I need you aware and you can barely keep your eyes open.” Liren scowled at him. Kandomere wasn’t a fool; he knew what she’d been doing. He always knew. She blamed his heightened senses.
“You are being unreasonably nice to me today, you know that. You don’t need to give me any special treatment, another cup of coffee and I’ll be just fine.”
Kandomere gave her his own glare. “That’s not a crime,” he quipped.
Liren didn’t know how else to respond. Kandomere wasn’t the nice one in the group, she was. This was going to throw their whole dynamic off if he started changing his tactics.
“Since you’re in such a good mood, now might be a good time to let you know that I won’t be joining you for the rest of the week.”

Alien Nation v Bright?
We just re-watched Alien Nation (the movie - I haven’t ever seen, and am not planning to watch, the TV show) and, I gotta say, it’s excellent. It hits many of the same themes and notes as Bright, but Bright just doesn’t work as well.
Part of what makes Alien Nation so much better is the quality of the acting and actors; James Caan and Mandy Patinkin are just stellar. But also, the alien character Sam (George) Francisco is given a depth and interiority that Nick Jakoby isn’t, and it makes such a big difference.
The aliens have history and a culture that clearly intersects with humanity but isn’t a complete match, allowing even background aliens to appear more than just a stereotype. They’re working on assimilation, they’re working to join in, though it’s clear the society they’re trying to assimilate into is far less than perfect.
And James Caan’s character is adult enough to treat George as a person against his initial dislike for everyone ‘slag’.
But in Bright, Jakoby doesn’t have any of the depth George is granted, the orc culture is a weirdly bastardized southern California version of “inner-city Black” (a perpetuation of ugly stereotypes), the humans are bizarrely unwilling to see non-humans as anything other than scum... and all of that works out into something far less interesting that Alien Nation. Flatter, somehow.
