It was a typical fall morning in Boston, with golden leaves dancing in the wind and the fresh scent of coffee wafting through the air. Y/N walked down the familiar street, her steps synchronized with the rapid beat of her heart, her mind full of possibilities of how to break the news; she would spend three months at her father's house, as her mother needed to travel for work continuously during that short period.

Her eyes fell on the Sturniolo's house, where the triplets, Matt, Nick, and Chris, had lived since they were teenagers.

A mixture of feelings invaded her whenever she passed by.

She and the triplets have been inseparable since childhood. They grew up together, shared secrets, laughs, and unforgettable moments. But there was something deeper between Y/N and Matt, something she held deep in her heart and feared revealing.

Matt was the middle brother out of the three, with his dark hair and piercing dead blue eyes that seemed to read her soul. He was Y/N's confidant, the one with whom she shared her most intimate dreams and her deepest fears. But there was a secret she never dared to confess: her love for him.

As Y/N walked towards the Sturniolo's house, she felt her heart beating wildly. She knew she would see Matt soon, and that thought made her nervous and excited at the same time. They saw each other every day, but each meeting was like a new chapter in an endless book.

Upon entering the cozy home, Y/N was greeted with warm smiles and affectionate hugs from Jimmy and Mary Lou. Matt, with his captivating gaze and worn-out jeans, stared at her eyes for a brief moment. A shiver ran down Y/N's spine, but she quickly looked away, fearing he might read her feelings in her gaze.

Throughout that day, Y/N and Matt shared conversations like they always did while spending time together, lost in their own bubble of happiness. The sound of their laughter echoed through the cold streets, filling the air with a contagious energy, enjoying the last minutes together before the girl had to go far away.

Matt's hair was messed up by the wind, attracting her attention, who glanced at him, lost in her thoughts. She wondered if he could hear her frantic heartbeat every time he smiled when his hair got in his mouth.

But there was a palpable tension between the two, an invisible elephant in the room that neither dared to address.

At night, when Y/N finally returned home, she sat on her bed and let the tears fall silently while preparing herself to pack her bags. She wondered if she would ever have the courage to confess her feelings to Matt or if she would continue hiding them forever.

Meanwhile, across the street, Matt was lying in his own bed, lost in thoughts about Y/N. He wondered if she could ever feel the same way about him. If she could look at him with the same love-filled eyes that he always cast her way. But the fear of ruining their friendship prevented him from taking any action.

Thus, the two friends remained trapped in a painful impasse, their hearts connected by invisible strings that neither of them dared to break.

Y/N hoped that the next three months would do something good for her.

Time had passed too fast, and soon, Y/N was back in Boston. The sun shone high in the summer sky as the girl left her house that morning, leaving her unopened suitcase to organize later, the birds chirped happily along with the frantic beats of her heart, yearning to see her best friends again.

For some reason, she knew something was different, that something had changed, but she wasn't prepared for what she would find when she met with him that afternoon.

Upon arriving at the brothers' house, Y/N was greeted by a strange silence, even with the cheerful voice of Mary Lou - who greeted her happily at the front door.

Y/N quickly found Matt sitting on the couch, next to a blonde girl, with long straight hair and an artificial smile on her lips. She was the complete opposite of Y/N in every possible way.

She felt a pang of discomfort when she saw Matt so close to that girl, her heart clenching when she noticed the brunette's arm around her shoulders, knowing the inevitable; Matt had met his perfect - or not - match.

She tried to push those feelings away and tried to convince herself that she was happy for him, but the truth was that a wave of sadness washed over her and found home in her heart.

Matt's new girlfriend, who introduced herself as Tiffany, looked at Y/N with a look of superiority, as if she was sizing her up and down. She emanated an aura of arrogance and pretension that made Y/N feel out of place and inadequate almost instantly.

Her slender and tall body was shaped by a mini skirt and a tank top that hugged her tiny waist perfectly, her feet covered in sparkling high heels - too much for a normal day in Boston -, Y/N feeling suddenly uncomfortable about the large t-shirt that covered her entire upper body.

As she watched Matt and Tiffany together, Y/N felt a tumultuous mix of emotions. The sounds of the video game coming from the television and Nick and Chris' excited screams echoing muffledly into her ears as she noticed how Matt hadn't looked directly at her eyes, not even once.

She wondered if he had really forgotten her so easily, if their friendship no longer meant anything to him. She felt betrayed and abandoned, as if a piece of her heart had been ripped out without warning.

As the day progressed, Y/N tried to keep herself occupied with the other two brothers, trying to push away the painful thoughts that threatened to consume her. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the vision of Matt and Tiffany together, acting like they were the perfect couple.

She was so different from what Y/N imagined Matt's type to be.

When it was finally time to go home, Y/N said goodbye to Matt with a forced smile on her lips. She tried to hide the pain in her eyes, trying to appear indifferent to the fact that he had found someone new. But deep down, she knew that it had changed everything between them both, and nothing would ever be the same as it was.

As she walked home, Y/N felt tears streaming down her face. She felt lost and confused, not knowing how to deal with the new reality that was opening up before her.

She wondered if Matt would ever see that she was the right girl for him, that he belonged with her.

The restaurant was buzzing with the sound of excited voices and cutlery clattering against plates. Matt, Y/N, Nick, and Chris were sitting at a table in the corner, enjoying a quiet lunch together after weeks of not hanging out as a group.

"Matt, can we talk?" Y/N began as she noticed Chris and Nick immersed in a random topic. Her voice was soft but filled with concern, her eyes trying to decipher the storm of emotions that seemed to cross the brunette's face.

"Of course, Y/N. What do you want to talk about?" Matt nodded, his gaze meeting hers momentarily, before lowering it back to his plate, a fake smile resting on his face.

Y/N took a deep breath, trying to find the right words to express what she was feeling.

"I couldn't help but notice how things have changed between us lately. Ever since you started... dating Tiffany, it seems like we're more distant."

"I know, Y/N. I'm sorry that I've been distant. It's just... Tiffany is complicated. She's very different from... Well, it doesn't matter." Matt spoke in a low tone, looking embarrassed as his hands nervously played with the metal cutlery.

Before Y/N could respond, Matt's phone started ringing, interrupting the conversation, and catching the attention of Nick and Chris, who stopped what they were saying and looked at them with interest. Matt huffed out an apology before looking at his cell screen, frowning as he read Tiffany's flashing name.

"Sorry, Y/N. I really need to take this." Matt said, quickly getting up from the table and taking a few steps away to answer the call, ignoring the worried looks his brothers were sending him.

Y/N watched as Matt spoke on the phone, his face tense and worried. She could hear Tiffany's muffled screams on the other end of the line, and a knot formed in her stomach as she realized the argument was about her, her name escaping the boy's lips more times than expected.

She could feel Nick and Chris's gazes burning into the side of her head, and she knew they wanted to say something, but her attention was too focused on Matt to try and get information out of the pair.

As the argument continued, Y/N observed in detail Matt's reactions, the lines of tension on his t the clenched fists at his side. She could feel the anguish he was experiencing.

When Matt finally hung up the phone, he returned to the table with a tired look in his eyes, his teeth biting down hard on his bottom lip, as if he was in an internal struggle between what to do and what not to do. He looked at Y/N, as if he was about to say something, but then looked away, unable to find the words.

Y/N quickly reached out to touch his hand, a small show of silent support, a frown full of worry taking her expression.

"Matt, hey, are you okay?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. I just..." Matt nodded, a weak smile playing on his lips, the same one that Y/N saw every day since he started dating Tiffany, but so different from the one that was directed to her three months before. "I just need to sort some things out with Tiffany." He cleared his throat quickly, tearing his eyes away from her and focusing them on his brothers. "Can you guys keep going without me? I really need to go."

"If I say no, it won't change what you think, so do whatever you want, Matt." Chris shrugged, his gaze rigid like never seen before by Y/N.

She tried to meet Nick's eyes, searching for some kind of explanation, but all she saw was sadness and worry.

Night was falling over Boston when Matt left Tiffany's house, his heart heavy and his mind turbulent. The rain, like a perfect background actor, fell in torrents, mixing with the tears that ran down his face as he walked aimlessly through the wet streets, having left his car in the hands of Chris - the one who knew most about driving after himself.

The boy allowed his feet to take him where they wanted to go, his vision blurred, and his mind too confused to decide anything at that moment, his heart screaming for refuge.

And that's how he found himself standing in front of Y/N's house, his safe haven in the midst of the storm that had been his life since he could remember.

With a heavy heart, the brunette walked to the side wall outside of the two-story house, his blue eyes only seeing the window that he already knew very well. Agilely, Matt quickly climbed the expanse of concrete, the lighting from the girl's room helping and guiding him.

The sound of light knocks against the closed glass echoed through the room, and it was and understandment to say that Y/N was surprised to see Matt outside her room, hanging from her window, drenched from the rain and with eyes red from crying.

The girl quickly shot up from her seat on her pretty made-up bed, running towards him and opening the window in seconds, her hands working on pulling him inside the cozy and warm room, wrapping him in a comforting hug, ignoring the feeling of his wet clothes against her dry and warm pajamas.

"Matt, what happened? Why are you here like this? What...?" Y/N asked frantically, worried. She pulled back a few inches, rubbing her left hand over Matt's cold arm, while her right worked on brushing away the soggy strands of hair that stuck to his forehead and cheeks.

"I broke up with Tiffany." His voice sounded choked and hoarse from crying, his lips trembling without a pause. "I finally realized how toxic she was being, and I couldn't go on like this anymore. I didn't-" A sob broke through his throat, his eyes closing tightly as his hands gripped Y/N's bent elbow, seeking some stability.

Y/N watched him with compassion, stroking the cold skin of his face gently with the tip of her right fingers. She felt like screaming from seeing him in such a state, her heart hurting as if someone was squeezing it with their bare hands.

She wondered how he couldn't see that she was the right one for him, not Tiffany. She knew all his favorite songs, the movies he loved, the places he dreamed of visiting. She was the only one who truly understood him, who knew his deepest dreams, fears, and hopes.

Over the years, Y/N has been by Matt's side through every important moment in his life. She watched him grow, face challenges, and overcome obstacles. She was the person he went to in the middle of the night when he needed someone to talk to, the voice that made him laugh when he was about to cry.

And yet, even with all this intimacy and deep connection, Matt didn't seem to realize what was right in front of him. He continued to seek love and validation elsewhere, ignoring the fact that Y/N was always there, waiting for him with an open heart.

And because of that, he got hurt. Again.

"Oh darling, I'm so sorry. Come here, sweet boy." Y/N asked in a gentle whisper, guiding him to her bed in slow steps.

"N-no, I'm going to wet your whole bed." Matt muttered between sniffles, his right hand gripping her arm gently while his left one rubbed his eyes angrily, trying to stop the tears from continuing to flow.

"It's okay, I don't mind, honey." The girl insisted, helping him sit on the edge of the mattress next to her pillow while moving his hand away from his face, preventing him from hurting himself. "Stay here, I'll go get a towel. I think I still have some of your clothes too."

While Matt vented between sobs about his problematic relationship with Tiffany, Y/N listened attentively, moving around the room behind her hairdryer, clean towels and pieces of clothing that the brunette had left there when he visited her house.

She could feel the pain and anguish he was feeling, and she was determined to be there for him, no matter how much her heart burned to see him suffer for another girl.

The girl quickly found everything she needed, beginning the task of wiping Matt's wet, dark hair with the fluffy towel and wiping away the raindrops from his skin, her body standing stiffly between the boy's legs, being careful not to cross any barrier he had placed between the two of them.

As Matt spoke and Y/N advised him, she could feel his blue eyes fixed on her face, his hands too close to her legs as she finished drying him, feeling her cheeks burn like fire, knowing for sure that they were as red as the color itself.

"Y/N, there's something I need to tell you." Matt whispered, his tone low - as if he didn't want to burst the bubble that seemed to surround them - but still echoing throughout the room with force. "I only started dating Tiffany because... because I was trying to get you out of my mind."

Y/N's eyes widened in surprise, her hands stopping their movements abruptly, the wet towel feeling heavy on her skin. The girl stared at the wall behind Matt for a few seconds, processing what he had said before finally looking at him, all the words caught in her throat as tears glistened in her eyes.

What?

"I know it was wrong, and I'm so sorry." Matt continued, his voice strained as his eyes seemed to search hers desperately. “But I realized that no matter how hard I tried, I could never forget you. Because... because I love you, Y/N. Since the first day I met you, I have loved you. Every time I close my eyes, it's your face that I see. You're always in my thoughts, in my dreams, everywhere, and nothing I tried could make you disappear."

Y/N's heart raced in her chest a mile a minute as Matt's words echoed in her mind. An overwhelming mix of happiness and relief filling her veins at finally hearing the words she had waited for so many years.

"Matt, this is..." Y/N shook her head as an easy smile spread across her face automatically. "I love you too." She confessed, her voice almost a whisper, lowering her face, her eyes finally meeting his electrifying ones, feeling as if they were piercing her soul, which now, exposed, no longer had a barrier to hide her true feelings. "I love you more than I ever thought possible to love anyone."

Arsenic (Nick for short) is an alternate version of Basil ! I have this post which goes into a bit more detail about him and his story.

His first name is Basil, Arsenic is his middle name. He just happened to mention it offhandedly to Sunny, who thought it was a cool unique name and decided to keep calling him that. Nick immediately started going by Arsenic instead of Basil after this. But his name is technically still Basil

-Julie, in a bid to help her mother and because she is the Main Character, falls through a magical book into a fairytale world, and now she must find her way back to even be able to see her mother (or any of her family) at all.

-Flynn, because she is genre savvy, jumps in right after her girlfriend because she knows Julie will get caught up in SHENANIGANS.

-Which she immediately does. Flynn isn't even through the magic portal all the way yet when she sees Julie talk to a Wolf. As in Big Bad. She threatens to pepperspray him but he bursts into tears, pulling down his red cape to cover his tail.

-He says he was just trying to bring some things to his sick Meemaw when he got distracted and strayed off the path and got bitten by a big bad wolf, and now he's too scared to go home and he still needs to give MeeMaw her things, but what if she doesn't recognise him.

-Flynn of course, rolls her eyes and is like: Just put your hood up so she can't see your fluffy ears and tuck in your tail, wear a face mask so she can't see what big teeth you have, and ring the doorbell and stand six feet back. Tell her you're social distancing.

-Of course Flynn has an extra face mask, she made them herself, it's got a cool galaxy print on it.

-Now that Meemaw has her food and medicine, Reggie is so grateful he pledges to help them on their Quest. Flynn shrugs because at least he's a local who can help them get around.

-Also he's really cute and he makes happy puppy noises when you scratch him behind the ears. And he's nice to curl up with at night in front of the fire.

-Along the way they meet Carrie, a girl who went to the ball to have a good time as someone other than herself, lost her glass slipper, and now she can't wear her signature colour anymore because the damn prince keeps trying to find the girl in pink with the fancy shoes.

"The shoes were awful for dancing in, but they did look good."

-Carrie is obsessed with Julie's sneakers. They trade her for them, and she makes them some clothes that means they fit in better.

-Flynn is all: Girl you are rocking that corset. Julie is embarrassed, especially when she sees both Carrie and Reggie go pink in agreement.

-Next they find a beautiful blonde prince in a glass coffin. Carrie reads the sign and tells them about how the prince ate a poison apple and fell into a coma and they're hoping his true love can kiss him awake, and that for 5 silver, you can try, please inquire inside.

-Flynn is like: Oh hell no that is a CONSENT VIOLATION and breaks the glass coffin, gives the poor boy the heimlich. He coughs up the apple, is very freaked out, and is like: please get me the hell away from here.

-His name is Alex and he ran away into the woods because his evil king and queen parents wanted him to marry a girl and he does not want to. So they keep trying to murder him to makes sure he doesn't come back to claim the throne. He doesn't want the throne. He wants a boyfriend and a nice little cottage with a cozy fireplace and maybe a cat, or a dog.

-For now he gets a Reggie instead which is kind of the same thing.

-They break into a tower to crash for the night, find a cute boy Alex is instantly in love with, rescue him, help him cut his hair to a nice manageable mid-back length, and take him with them.

-Do they nearly lose Alex, Willie, and Reggie to an evil witch with a house made of candy? Yes they do.

-Julie is like: STOP. TAKING. FOOD. FROM. STRANGERS. Alex, I thought you of all people would know better!

-Carrie: I mean the witch is dead now, help me chop up her damn sofa so we have provisions to last us a while.

-They do not stay at the witch's house though because it's technically an active crime scene. So they're out late at night wandering the woods when they find Luke. Who fell through a magic portal of his own in the 90s and thought it was rad as fuck at first, but then he realised he's not AGING and what do you mean it's been 25 years???? So they take him with him as well to see if they can get him home.

-Right before they find the magic portal back, Carrie's prince finds them and she grabs Flynn's pepperspray to keep him away and he's like: I JUST WANT TO GIVE YOUR SHOE BACK THEY LOOK EXPENSIVE also I'm not the real prince, I'm the kitchen boy who looks weirdly like the prince, we switched places and he fucked off and people are starting to catch on I'm not him because I don't know court etiquette please take me with you before they behead me.

-So they take Nick back home with them as well and they all live happily ever after. Rose is cured, Reggie is human again, Willie is safe from the evil warlock who locked him up, Luke gets reunited with his mom, and Ray is like: ... okay so... we're gonna need a lot of bunk beds?

I suppose I didn’t expect this to happen in this way… but I suppose I never expected it to happen but then it always does. I look down the hallway at it, it stares straight back at me. It looks like it is giving me a moment to run, but I wait for things to be different.

Maybe this time it won’t, maybe this time it will be nice? Trying to give the thing some sympathy. But it only glares at my soul, I know it is going to attack me, and I’m scared.

It bends it head down,

I move backwards a step,

It’s wings are spread,

I look for an opening in the crowded hallway,

than bobs it head up and down, I start to quick shuffle to an opening,

And finally,

“HONK, HONK, HONK”

I sprint down the hallways.

“Fuck,” “fuck,” “Fuck,” I curse as my mind wonders, why the bloody hell does this keep happening to me?

I love it when Tori and I can go to the park. Usually I don’t like the outdoors much, but with Tori it’s more fun.

We aren’t the one to run a lot so we explore the ground and trees. I see a ladybug on a plant and go to pick it up, it’s so small in my hands.

My grandpa says I have much too small hands for a boy my age, but they look so big compared to the ladybug. I like bugs, or at least the pretty ones. I don’t care for plain beetles, but Tori also likes bugs. Dad says that’s unique because most girls don’t like bugs.

Dad is in the car on a phone call, we are supposed to leave in the next thirty minutes or so, but I don’t mind, I get to see Grandma and Grandpa later today. I like seeing them. I always get treats.

I want to show Tori my ladybug, she sits under a tree reading a small book, she is almost entirely still. Tori doesn’t look for bugs with me anymore, Dad says it’s unique for her to like bugs but girls at her school called her weird for liking bugs. Tori doesn’t help me look for bugs anymore.

I stay with the ladybug in my hands and look at my sister, she looks sad. I don’t want to make her unset by showing her the bug, but I don’t want her to be sad all alone.

I sit down and look around at the rest of the park,

A man with his wife on bicycles,

A woman setting up a picnic with her toddler,

And at a football game of boys my age, I suddenly feel a bit nervous, I always get nervous around boys my age. Mom says it’s because I am just sensitive and shy and one day I won’t feel nervous around them. I don’t know if I believe her yet.

I watch them kick the ball around, I could ask to play, but I think I want to hang around Tori until she feels better. I look at the game one more time. It looks like another person is about to join the game as a blonde boy runs up, but then I see it.

A goose, no more than six feet away from me.

I didn’t know this park had geese. I reach out to pet it with the hand that is not holding the ladybug, it stares at me as I move closer. Then it moved its head down, and flared its wings. I stay still in confusion. Then it hisses, I stand confused as “HONK, HONK, HONK,” It runs towards me and I scream, running as fast as I can away from it.

I run over the mud, over the little creek, around the bushes, through the flowers, near the trees and I am about to run into the field when, “WAP!” I stop and look around. It’s Tori, with no more book in hand as she had thrown it at the goose.

Tori stood firm, but the goose looks like it’s getting back up, Tori grabs my hand and runs us to the car. We ran quickly and Tori opened the door and got me in, but Tori barely made it but not before getting bit by the goose.

Dad turns around looking at his frazzled children and Tori’s now bleeding hand, asking us why we interrupted his phone call. We explained the goose, and the running, and Tori’s hand, Dad just laughed.

In fact he laughed until we got to Grandpa and Grandma’s house, and there in between the laughing he said to tell the story to Grandparents and we did, to which they started laughing.

After a minute or two, Grandpa interrupted the laughter by saying, “Chin up kiddo, a story like that will only happen once, you have a good story to tell.”

I laughed awkwardly, little did I know that I was going to wish Grandpa was right about this.

The park had become a bit of an unsafe zone for me since the Incidences. Since I was seven, I've had two goose attacks, both of them ending with me sprinting to the car. Other than seven I was also attacked at age ten. Luckily Tori had been with me both times and saved me. She still has the goose bite mark since the seven year old goose attack.

This made me have a bit of fear of goose. Or geese. Whichever works. Either way I have been terrified to go to the park by myself. But now it’s different.

I have made a lot of friends since I was seven, or at least a lot of friends for me, Tao, Issac, and now Elle.

We all made friends because we weren't quite normal. I couldn’t make friends because I’m Charlie, I'm very highly anxious. Tao couldn’t make friends because he was just very… passionate about things. Issac had a hard time making friends because they always had their head in a book and barely looked up.

And Elle, well Elle came out as transgender and lots of people found that weird for some reason.

But nonetheless they all became friends, it was a strange mixture but it worked. In a lot of ways they all had fun with each other.

Now, they were all walking through the park, all with ice cream in hand. And for a moment Charlie forgot he was in the park. And little did his friends know that he needed to be aware when he was in the park.

“-and so as I was saying, DC movies have no reason to survive, and will die off within the next Marvel movie phase,” Tao said, moving their beanie a bit out of their face.

“Not really I mean think about it, DC has been around way longer than Marvel, comic-book-years-wise at least,” Issac interjected,

“Actually I think I’m gonna agree with Tao on this one, the DC movies are horrendous, and Marvel seems to be taking over the world,” Elle says twirling her short but growing hair.

“Maybe they’ll actually-“ I start but don’t finish, as I make eye contact with once again the only goose in the park.

“Bloody hell,” I whisper, as my friends stand very confused, at not hearing me curse very much and for apparently having an eye contact contest with a goose.

I think to myself don’t, don’t, please don’t.

It’s head bends down and I don’t wait for what to happen next, I drop my ice cream cone and start sprinting to my house.

As I run I hear my friends calling out for me but then I also hear “HONK, HONK, HONK,” so I decide not to stop and sprint all the way to my house.

Back at the house I quickly explained to my friends on the group chat what was happening and the other two stories of getting chased by a goose.

All that group chat had to say is that a new inside joke was created. And it was titled “Charlie don’t look now but there’s a Honk Honk.”

I am glad that my friends can laugh at it, I just wish that I could.

(Back to modern time)

Five times! This has happened to me five times, and why?! Who the bloody hell knows! I do have to give the goose points though this is the first time it tried to chase me not in a park, how did it even get to the school?

Not the matter now, now the goal is trying not to get bit by a goose well running to my next class.

I make it to the next hallway where my next class is, and for a moment I swear I see and hear another goose on the opposite end of the hallway. What the hell are they ganging up on me now? But I realize it looks like it’s chasing somebody else.

Thank. Fucking. God.

I run into the classroom as the hissing gets too close to my legs for comfort. I barely get a chance to say good morning to the teacher when I have to run over to a table and jump up away from the goose.

The goose starts to calm down a little bit but not enough to try and stop getting onto the table. Then all of a sudden a tall blonde boy runs into the classroom, and what was tailing him? but a god forbidden goose.

He sees my idea and runs up to the same table, having to grab my arms to get up, and once he gets up with a little room on the table, he kind of just holds me there.

At that moment the geese seemed to calm down. In all my years of being chased by geese they have never calmed down well I was around.

I’m not sure if I’m all safe yet from them, but I do look at the boy is holding me, he’s tall, blonde, a bit familiar, seems to be covered in freckles, but the thing I seem to notice in that moment is that he is very, very cute.

“Hi,” he says still holding me, but looking in my eyes,

“Hi,” I say back with a sneaking blush coming to my face,

“Nice to know someone has similar problems as you,” he smiles,

“What?” I question,

He points at the geese,

“Oh yeah…Yeah!” I laugh, it’s weird I have never been able to laugh at my misfortune with the goose but now I feel so easy to.

“Nick Nelson by the way,” he says.

“Charlie Spring” I say in return.

We stood there for a moment.

“Ahem,” The teacher says,

“Oh right of course,” We climbed off the desk as the goose was all calm and now it was picked up by two older boys in class and thrown out the window.

we sit down next to each other, he looks me in the eyes and I look in his.

Maybe the goose wasn’t so misfortunate after all.

The Taste of Revenge (1)

Chapter 1

“Come on Tim!”  You growled from behind clenched teeth at your partner of six weeks, “We have that stupid external review and we’re going to be late if you keep tapping away at your keyboard!  In case you’ve forgotten, just to complicate matters, the review is going to be conducted by Jim Sterling’s Interpol team.”

“I’m coming.  I’m coming.”  Your partner assured you as he finished what he was doing on his computer and stood up.  “And in answer to your statement, no I hadn’t forgotten that Sterling’s Interpol team would be conducting our review.”

He flicked you on the forehead as he stalked past you.

It didn’t take long for you to catch up with him, “What were you doing on your computer?”

Tim grinned mischievously, “I like to think of it as my insurance policy.”

You groaned and shook your head, “I shouldn’t have asked.”

“What, you don’t appreciate my clever pun?”

You ignored him.  The Interpol agents that were waiting at the entrance to the conference room looked all too smug and then you noticed the other members of your team.

“We’re all going in here?” You questioned.

“Looks like it.”  Ziva confirmed.

“This is ridiculous.  In my day, when someone was a visitor, they acted like a guest.  There was no sense of entitlement to another’s space.”  Ducky groused, shooting a disapproving look at the agents guarding the door.

“So all of us are going to be in the conference room at the same time?” Tony probed.

“I thought that was clear.”  The Interpol agent on the left scoffed.

“And once again, the Interpol team disregards Gibbs’ rules.  They’re there for a reason.  The last time they disregarded Rule 1, the suspect nearly got away.  If it hadn’t been for Abby and Ziva’s quick thinking, the suspect would have escaped.”

Tim seemed to have an inkling as to what you were thinking because he clasped his hands together with his right hand over his left.  His fingers on his right hand were visible and he discreetly tapped them against the back of his left hand four times.

“Right.  Rule 16.  If someone thinks they have the upper hand, break it.”

“Every time that I deal with your team, it always takes me a minute to remember that Sterling does things differently to our boss.”  You said to the Interpol agents.

The two agents exchanged a look, unsure of what to make from your comment.  Luckily for them, they didn’t need to respond because the door to the conference room opened inward and in the doorway stood Jim Sterling.  The Interpol agent wore a black suit with a red tie and confidence oozed from his every pore.  He was exactly as you remembered him down to his jade green eyes that glinted with a strange fire and his neatly-styled, thinning brown hair.

It felt like your heart skipped a beat and then started to beat at double the speed as you gazed at the shorter man standing next to Sterling. 

“He’s in prison.  He’s in prison.  He’s in prison.”  You chanted in your mind.

Sterling smiled thinly in your direction, “May I introduce you to Doctor Frederick Chilton?  I requested him and his expertise for this review all the way from Baltimore.  Doctor Chilton, meet the NCIS team that I spoke to you about.”  Sterling used his hand to gesture to all of you.

“Please come in.”  Doctor Chilton requested, moving to the other side of the door so that you could trickle into the room one-by-one.

“I stand by my previous point.”  Ducky glowered as he stepped into the room.

“Duck.”  Gibbs warned half-heartedly.

After a non-verbal conversation between you and your partner, you walked reluctantly into the room first.  As you walked past Doctor Chilton, you did your best to ignore the unsettling way his eyes followed you. 

“He looks and sounds so similar to Barba.  I hope that’s where the similarities end.”

You took the seat next to Abby close to the end of the table and Tim sat down on your other side.

“They took my Caf-Pow and tipped it down the sink in front of me,” Abby hissed to you and Tim venomously.

Once you registered Abby’s words, you switched your gaze to Sterling who moved to sit on the opposite side of the table, next to Doctor Chilton.  Both men wore confident expressions.  There was a soft thud and you twisted around to see that the two agents that had been in front of the door when you arrived now stood in the room with their backs to the door and their hands crossed in front of them.

You barely refrained from shaking your head again.

“How many times is this team going to prove Ducky and Gibbs right?”  You wondered.  “And how many times will we be impacted because of their actions?”

As soon as you thought the word ‘actions,’ your mind flashed back to Barba.  Even now, six weeks after the case with SVU, Barba’s actions never ceased to make anger curl in the pit of your stomach at the way that he had played you, the NCIS team and the SVU squad.  There was another reason for your anger, one you didn’t try to dwell on but occasionally kept you up at night.  After your walk with Barba you had considered him a friend.  His betrayal had cut you deeply.

“And now for the findings.  Doctor Chilton, if you would be s-”

“Hang on.”  Gibbs interrupted, “Are you telling us that you’ve already made your decision?  I thought this was a review.”

“It is.  You were tried in absentia.”  Sterling replied.  On any other person, his British accent may have been attractive and comforting but in this instance, the charm and amusement in Sterling’s voice had disgust forming in your stomach as you attempted to figure out what Sterling gained from his current course of action.

You clenched your jaw as Doctor Chilton began to speak about how your team had dangerous levels of co-dependency and how that was indicative of a larger problem at NCIS.  Surely everyone in the room had noticed that his vibrant green eyes never left you throughout the whole briefing?  It wasn’t just you being paranoid, right?

“It is my personal recommendation that the entire NCIS team be demoted to probationary status.”  He concluded.

The room went deathly silent.

“I beg your pardon, young man?”

“I did not make this decision lightly.  Out of all the options, I consider this to be the best one.”

Tony coughed repeatedly.  His coughs sounded a lot like he was swearing in Italian.  Ziva examined Sterling with narrowed eyes and a calculating glare.

“I’m sure that we will regain our status as full NCIS agents by working for you in your latest case.”  She announced shrewdly.

The fact that Sterling gave no answer confirmed her words to be true and you felt your blood thundering through your veins at the thought of yet another person manipulating you and your team to achieve their own ends.

“NO WAY IN HELL AM I GOING TO LIE DOWN AND ACCEPT THIS!”

You stood up from your chair, drawing everyone’s attention to you and you unclipped your badge and unholstered your gun.

“Consider this my answer.”  You set your badge and gun down firmly on the table.

Tim and Tony stood up at the same time.  They too placed their guns and shields on the desk, “Good luck accessing the network.”  Tim grinned toothily.

“Connections go a long way when it comes to solving cases.  I wonder how well you will do without mine.”

“No, Tony.  I’m sure that Agent Sterling’s team will encounter no dramas solving cases since they have their own reputable sources.”  Ziva imitated your actions.

Ducky placed his hat on his head, “I have no doubt that you have a qualified ME team on standby.”

“Count me out too.”  Palmer stated.

Bishop and Torres placed their guns and shields down, “I guess we got lucky with the SVU squad.”  Bishop remarked, “There doesn’t seem to be a lot of inter-agency cooperation in this field.”

Unless your eyes were deceiving you, Doctor Chilton’s professional exterior had cracked and he was now panicking.  His gaze darted between Gibbs and Abby as they stood as well and back to you.  Clearly, he was attempting to predict their next moves.  But why was he so interested in you?

Abby pulled out a small, black device and pressed a button on it.  She tipped her head to the side and regarded Sterling with an innocent look, “I hope you brought your own machines with you.  The NCIS ones are no longer online.”

“You’re obstructing an investigation!” One of the agents guarding the door cried, pulling your attention to him as he reached to his belt and pulled out a pair of handcuffs.  He started towards you but Gibbs obstructed his path by stepping in front of you and causing him to fumble the handcuffs.

“Try it.”  Your boss’ voice was low. 

The agent swallowed nervously and peered around Gibbs to look at Sterling to determine what his response should be.

“I can detain you here for obstructing my investigation.  You of all people should understand the importance of solving cases.”

“We’re not NCIS agents anymore.”  You retorted.  “We’re civilians who have no knowledge of your case.  If had you provided details of the case and explained why you needed us and our machines and then we resigned, knowing that information, it would be a different story.  But you didn’t.  So we’re not discussing that.”

No one commented on the wry chuckle that escaped your boss.

Taking his cue from you, Tim spoke, “Seeing as our presence is no longer needed here, I suggest we leave the building and enjoy the rest of our day.  It’s so beautiful outside and we really don’t get to experience days like this very much.”

“I am inclined to agree with you, Tim.”  Tony commented theatrically and after a pointed look from your boss, the Interpol agent who had tried to handcuff you quickly hopped out of Gibbs’ path.  Your team trooped towards the door.

Evidently, Ziva couldn’t resist leaving without firing a parting shot, “All the best with your current investigation, Agent Sterling.”  She called over her shoulder.  Before anyone could reply, she grabbed the handle and pulled the door closed, separating your team from the people on the other side.

Tony held up the key to the conference room, “When should we tell them that while the door opens from the inside, it locks from the outside?”

“Never sounds good to me,”  Gibbs replied.
