12 for microstory
Candle
Shared, heavy breathing. Crickets somewhere far, far outside the window. The scent of sweat, saliva, and semen, all mixing together in the familiar blend that now reaches Eddie’s nose.
Once he’s rolled off of Buck, and they’re both basking in afterglow. He turns his head to look at Buck, and… a neighborhood blackout isn’t the worst thing in the world, Eddie decides.
Not when the candle on their nightstand flickers like that, bathing Buck in its warm, orange glow, highlighting just enough of his features for Eddie to fall in love all over again.
Send me a number and I’ll write a micro ficlet 💕

It seems the dash has been talking about the Lan Xichen - Nie Huaisang post-canon dynamics and it's gotten me thinking about how discussion around post-canon Lan Xichen's absolutely horrendous mental state often center around the question of "who is Lan Xichen angry at and who does he feel guilty about" which, at its worst, seperates into 2 camps where according to one side he feels guilty about not protecting jgy and hates the Nies and, on the other side he has completely flipped on jgy and despises him now while being filled with regret towards both nmj and nhs.
And I dislike both of these takes not just because it often feels like people projecting their own Blorbo opinions onto Lan Xichen which is never a fun time but also because that central question is flawed to begin with. It treats anger and guilt like opposing emotions that can't coexist or, if they do, have to compete until one wins and cancels the other out.
And that's not how that... works.
To be clear, the reason why Lan Xichen is so supremely fucked up at the end of the story is that he believes on some level he fucked over everyone in this situation. And, even more importantly, that even with hindsight he can't actually think of what he should have done instead. Every attempt to do better by one seems to involve fucking over the others even more because these people were in conflict with each other and choosing one would mean standing against another
And none of this would actually stop him from feeling angry at any of them. It's not "who is he angry at and who does he feel guilty about" it's: "he is angry at everyone and feels an immediate and bone deep guilt for daring to think badly of them."
Speaking from personal experience here, but feeling like you're not allowed to be angry at someone because you wronged them really doesn't stop the feeling, it just maks you feel like shit for feeling it. And this is all worsened by the fact that what he's in seclusion for is, at the end of the day, a moral question of what he, Lan Xichen, did wrong and every single emotion serves as further proof of the ways he's failed them.
Is he angry at Jin Guangyao, for killing his oldest friend, using Lan xichen's trust in him to do it, and then lying to him about it and countless other things for a decade when Lan Xichen thought of him as the person he trusted the most in the entire world? Yeah. That's a thing people get angry about! Except Jin Guangyao also saved his life and protected and helped him more times than he can count and never ever hurt him and can Lan Xichen say the same? No. He had to clean A-Yao's blood off Shouyue, he has to be haunted by the fact that if he just hadn't listened to Huaisang- hadn't been just like everyone else, in the end, and believed a lie about Jin Guangyao just to think the worst of him- then Jin Guangyao might still be alive.
Is he angry at Huaisang? For orchestrating the death of his best friend? For making him do it? For knowing what the real cause behind Nie Mingjue's death was and never telling him until he found out in the absolute worst way? Absolutely. But didn't Huaisang hide it from him for a reason? Wasn't it his clan's techniques and his personal faith in Jin Guangyao that cost Huaisang his brother? How dare he demand that Huaisang let him in on the secret of his brother's murderer when Lan Xichen is here wondering about how he should have protected that murderer better!
And I do even think he's angry at Nie Mingjue, sometimes I think it's pretty normal to be angry at your friend for kicking your other friend down the stairs and threatening to kill him, even when you know his mind is being poisoned. And years later the last thing he ever saw of Nie Mingjue was Nie Mingjue's thoughtless corpse coming to kill him before Jin Guangyao pushed him away and then proceeded to graphocally snap Jin Guangyao's neck in front of him. And if what he wants to do is protect Jin Guangyao, shouldn't he be mad at Mingjue? Didn't this whole mess start because Jin Guangyao was afraid Nie Mingjue was going to kill him?
Except holy shit, can you imagine? Lan Xichen feels like he personally has Nie Mingjue's blood on his hands. Your oldest friend is killed in front of you and you happily believe it's an accident for 11 years and now you think you have the right to be mad at him? You watched him get worse as he was being poisoned and attributed it to his illness and not to the techniques stolen from your library with the token you give his murderer. Does he think Nie Mingjue knew who he was in that moment and wanted to kill him? That he blamed Lan Xichen for his death? (For the record, I don't. I don't agree with most of what Lan Xichen thinks about himself, but I've been in a self-blame spiral and I know how it feels)
But what was he supposed to do then? Choose Mingjue's side and let A-Yao die? That's also unacceptable. But so is letting Jin Guangyao get away with it. Every single outcome is unacceptable. And really, if Jin Guangyao felt like he had to kill Nie Mingjue to save himself, when it was Lan Xichen who was supposed to keep the peace between them, isn't that another mark of his failure? That he couldn't protect Jin Guangyao well enough that he felt he had to do something so horrible?
But that's not an answer! He's supposed to know what he should have done different, and all he can come up with is "what you were already doing, but without failing this time" He can't pick a side because that means betrayal, but he's already tried not picking a side and it ended like this! There is no right answer, which can only leave him with the idea that he was simply doomed to hurt the people he loved from the start. No wonder the guy looks like shit when we see him post-canon. They put him in a real life trolley problem and gave him the lever as a souvenir.

Happy Halloween!!! The untamed pretty please?
a continuation of 1 2 3
Nie Huaisang at ten isn't that jarring, even considering the adult version he left behind, because he's pretty much exactly as Jiang Cheng remembers him.
Seeing Nie Mingjue at thirteen as a sullen child instead of the looming specter of his memories takes some adjusting.
Nie Haoyu wouldn't take no for an answer and it hadn't helped that A-Ying had been thrilled at the invitation and immediately started peppering the Nies with question that they'd answered in good humor the whole way back. Nie Haoyu seems delighted with A-Ying, finding him amusing and impressive and complimenting Jiang Cheng several times on raising such an impressive son.
He just glares back but Nie Haoyu's good humor is unaffected. His memory of the clan leader is spotty at best and he's coming to the slow and horrifying realization that it was Nie Huaisang and not Nie Mingjue that got his personality from their father.
Joining a clan is probably good for them, long term, and the Nies are the only other tolerable major clan, not that he'd ever expected to get practically kidnapped by them.
The only problem is that Nie Haoyu is going to be dead in two years time and if he wants A-Ying and the Nie siblings to have some semblance of a normal childhood, he's going to have to. Do something about that.

Draw Nie Mingjue sleeping under a tree?
Tumblr media
My mind is still stuck in my fierce corpse Jiang Cheng au in which Fairy ends up being Nie Mingjue's good doggo. So have both of them napping underneath a tree! :D
Thank you for the cute prompt, you know I cannot resist drawing this big man all peaceful.
[image ID: a digital grayscale drawing of Nie Mingjue from The Untamed/MDZS. He is lying in the grass underneath a tree, across his belly lies the dog Little Fairy portrayed as a big husky. She is also asleep. Nie Mingjue is smiling peacefully in his sleep. End ID. More detailed image description in alt text.]

Wei Wuxian: *sipping his coffee and cringing*
Nie Huaisang: What are you drinking?
Wei Wuxian: However many espresso shots fit into a venti cup.
Nie Huaisang: ...Are you ok?
Wei Wuxian: Physically, mentally, or emotionally?

If you put Jin Guangyao on a rollercoaster, he can't scream. He will try but his body doesnt have the pathways for releasing the fear so it's just elegant wimpers in a weird voice
i am wildly curious about what prompted this ask, anon. and i have so many questions. why is jgy on a rollercoaster? is he alone or with someone else? why would he agree to do this?
no scratch that, he’s definitely on the rollercoaster to hold huaisang’s hand, because we know nmj would not waste his time on an amusement park ride. ok so that’s one question answered, 99 more to go.

Trick or treat! Nie Huaisang ship of your choice, picking couples Halloween costumes?
:DDDDD! Thanks for the ask!
SangCheng pre-Halloween shopping:
"It's not fair." Nie Huaisang slumps over the handle of the grocery store cart, wilting impressively without really wilting at all. (If he'd actually leaned his whole weight into it, he'd have fallen flat on his face already. "Jiang Cheng, you agree with me right? It's not fair. It's not fair at all."
"What, that they don't have any more child sized black cat costumes?" Jiang Cheng stuffs his grocery list into his jacket pocket. They still need approximately another six pounds of candy. One pound at least to appease the sugar fiend that was Lan Wangji, two to make sure that they had enough when they had to hand out Halloween candy later, and another three to satisfy Nie Huaisang's need for hoarding Halloween candy of all types in the shape of bats. "I told you already that Jiejie had already picked out a bee onesie for A-Ling to wear when they go trick or treating tonight, besides, it's too late to get them now, it's already Halloween morning."
"But I wanted them to still be here." Trying to pry the grocery cart away from Nie Huaisang when he's like this would only have been a losing battle, but Jiang Cheng tries it out anyway. Predictably, it doesn't work.
"For what? Our costumes are done," (They're both owls this year. Huaisang had spent a not insubstantial amount of time sewing on all the feathers) "A-Ling will be a very cute bumblebee, Jiejie and her husband are something they won't tell us, Lan Wangji will refuse to wear a costume again, and Wei Wuxian will come to our house wearing something that has way too much fake blood on it, and your brother is--"
"So our dog can match us when we do give out candy later."
"You want to dress Bella as a cat?"
Huaisang sighs. "It would be funny! You can't keep dressing her as a pumpkin every year!"
Jiang Cheng runs his hand through his hair, laughing.
(If he'd been caught off guard by the thought -- I really do love this man -- and that'd immediately come on the heels of -- I didn't think it was possible to have this like I have it -- that's something to unpack later.)

you're mad that people write jgy... doing shit he canonically did? you guys are fucking nuts.
I'm going to assume that you are referring to this ask. If I'm wrong and you're referring to something else, please let me know so that I can make a more sensible rebuttal.
So the first possibility is that you were referring to my annoyance about the perennial crop of dumpster mushrooms people keep coming up with with regards to Jin Guangyao and Mo Xuanyu. It always amazes me that the purity police are so determined that their faves must be perfect that they completely strip them of any agency. Mo Xuanyu can't be both a cool character and a fucked-up little dude who harassed his brother, he has to be a perpetual victim, forever suffering until one day he just snaps.
Incase you were wondering, summoning Satan to murder your relatives is not, in fact, healthy behaviour. It's fucked up! Yes, even if they're awful! And it is in fact one of many fucked-up things MXY did, one of which was harass his half-brother.
Anyway, it pisses me off that people try to make the whole 'kicked out of JLT' thing somehow JGY's fault because, even aside from what I mentioned in the original post about the wounds and such, it takes one of the very few pieces of information we know about Mo Xuanyu from his own pen, and removes his agency in the situation completely. And that's not even going into how mind-bogglingly stupid it would have been for JGY to set up a plot that even touches on incest, considering...*waves at the whole Qin Su situation*.
It's okay to like Mo Xuanyu even though he's not a paragon of moral purity. This is MDZS, there are no paragons here.
The other possibility is that you're referring to my distaste for murderYao in AUs. To which I say...well, show me the pressures. Show me the forces that caused Jin Guangyao, alone of the entire cast, to still have comitted his canonical crimes. If Wei Wuxian isn't making anyone cannibalize themselves and Nie Mingjue isn't constantly on the ragged edge of sanity, one wrong word away from a murderous rampage, why is Jin Guangyao still somehow a murderer? If Wei Wuxian gets to be a Manic Pixie Dream Necromancer and Nie Mingjue gets to be, idk, a professional bunny cuddler, why doesn't Jin Guangyao get to be a wedding planner of awesome and terrifying efficiency or something?
So those are the two things from that post that I thought might have upset you, Nonny. If I guessed wrong which post you're talking about, or guessed wrong which things you're talking about, feel free to either send me another ask clarifying - a link or even just the first line of the post would be helpful - or you're always welcome to come off anon and reblog with your additions and corrections.

Sworn brothers LWJ, NHS, and JZX. You would think they're the least messy of the sworn brothers but they are just in different ways especially when they're together and have to share one and a half braincells and two are hopeless, social awkward romantics
--------------------
“I regret my youthful folly,” Lan Wangji said solemnly. “Deeply.”
“I understand,” Jin Zixuan said. “I, too, have reason for regret.”
“Oh, stop being such spoilsports, both of you!” Nie Huaisang laughed, wrapping his arms around each of their shoulders. “You should pity me, instead! I have the most boring sworn brothers in the world!”
“I still think we shouldn’t have been held responsible for it,” Jin Zixuan said gloomily. “We were eight. We hadn’t even met other people yet.”
Lan Wangji nodded.
“Pssh, like either of you have still met other people,” Nie Huaisang said. “I’m the one being robbed here. I could have sworn brotherhood with Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian!”
Suddenly he was being glared at.
“…unless that’s the problem?” he hazarded a guess. “Wait, why do you guys want to swear brotherhood with them? Lan Zhan, don’t you have a thing against Wei Wuxian?”
“…no,” Lan Wangji said.
Nie Huaisang stared at him. “Are you saying no because you don’t have any feelings about Wei Wuxian, or because your feelings aren’t against him?”
Lan Wangji sullenly refused to answer, which was already answer enough.
“And you,” Nie Huaisang said, spinning to look at Jin Zixuan, who’d already preemptively started blushing. “What is your problem? You don’t even want to marry Jiang Yanli – are you crushing on her brother?”
“I’ve never even met her,” Jin Zixuan squeaked. “It’s not the same…”
“You’re both useless,” Nie Huaisang declared. “Completely, utterly, totally useless.”
Then he grinned.
“Luckily, you have me here…”
