On March 9, 1977, Francine Hughes returned from business college to her Dansville, Michigan, home and put a frozen dinner in the oven for her husband, James. He didn't like it. Francine, he said, should be at home preparing meals for him, not running off to school. He beat her up, as he had done many times before; and to drive home his point he tore up her schoolbooks and term papers and forced her to burn them in the trash barrel. Twelve-year-old Christy Hughes called the police, who came to the house long enough to calm James down but declined, as they had many times before, to arrest him. They left James, tired from beating Francine, asleep in his bedroom. Determined to "just drive away," Francine piled the children into the family car. "Let's not come back this time, Mommy," they said. She carried a gasoline can to the bedroom, poured the contents around the bed where James lay asleep, backed out of the room, and set a match to it The rust of flame sucked the door shut.
Francine Hughes drove immediately to the Ingham County sheriffs office, crying hysterically, "I did it. I did it." She was charged with first-degree murder.
Dansville adjoins East Lansing, home of Michigan State University and consequently of many social-action groups. Within two months feminists and other interested people in the Lansing area had formed the Francine Hughes Defense Committee to raise money and public awareness for her defense. They were careful to say that they neither advocated nor condoned murder, but they held that women confronted with violence have a right to defend themselves. They argued that "Francine Hughes—and many other women facing similar charges—should be free from the threat of punishment," for Francine Hughes was a battered woman.
At the time wife-beating was a growing feminist issue, following close on the heels of feminist attacks upon rape, a crime it resembles in many ways. Both rape and wife-beating are crimes of violence against women. Both are widespread, underreported, trivialized, and inadequately punished by the legal system. Both are acts of terrorism intended to keep all women in their place through intimidation. In fact, rape is often part of wife abuse, though so far only a few states acknowledge even the possibility of rape within marriage. The chief difference between the two crimes is that while the victim of nonmarital rape must live with a terrifying memory, the abused wife lives with her assailant. Rapists are, in Susan Brownmiller's phrase, the "shock troops" of male supremacy. Wife-beaters are the home guard.
American feminists took up the issue of wife-beating when they learned in 1971 of the work of Erin Pizzey, founder of Chiswick Women's Aid, the first shelter house in England exclusively for battered women and their children. Rainbow Retreat, the first American shelter for abused families of alcoholics opened in Phoenix, Arizona, on November 1, 1973; and in St. Paul, Minnesota, Women's Advocates, a collective that began with a phone service in 1972, opened Women's House to battered women and their children in October 1974. Rainbow Retreat, during its first two and a half years, sheltered more than six hundred women and children. In St. Paul the five-bedroom Women's House sheltered twenty-two women and fifteen children during its first month of operation; less than a year later Women's Advocates were negotiating to buy a second house. Across the country the shelter movement spread to Pasadena, San Francisco, Seattle, Boise, Albuquerque, Pittsburgh, Ann Arbor, Boston, New York. To open a shelter was to fill it beyond capacity almost overnight. Suddenly it seemed that battered women were everywhere.
While activists opened shelters, researchers and writers set about documenting the problem of wife-beating or, as it came to be called more euphemistically in the academic literature, "domestic violence." The records showed that 60 percent of night calls in Atlanta concerned domestic disputes. In Fairfax County, Virginia, one of the nation's wealthiest counties, police received 4,073 disturbance calls in 1974. During ten months in 1975-76 the Dade County Florida Citizens Dispute Settlement Center handled nearly 1,000 wife-beating cases. Seventy percent of all assault cases received in the emergency room at hospitals in Boston and Omaha were women who had been attacked in their homes. Eighty percent of divorce cases in Wayne County, Michigan, involved charges of abuse. Ninety-nine percent of female Legal Aid clients in Milwaukee were abused by men.
The FBI guessed that a million women each year—women of every race and social class—would be victims of wife-beating. Journalists Roger Langley and Richard C. Levy put the figure at more than 28 million. Some said that one in four women married to or cohabiting with a man would become a victim; others said one in three. In some areas the incidence seemed even greater. In California the experts said one of every two women would be beaten. And in Omaha, the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women estimated that 95 percent of women would be abused at some time. There scarcely seemed need of additional evidence, so the same statistics began to turn up in every new account, but repetitious as they were, they showed all too clearly that wife-beating is a social problem of astounding dimensions.

Tombs of the Blind Dead will be released on Blu-ray on October 24 via Synapse Films. Other than the packaging, CD, and booklet, its identical to last year's Steelbook edition.
Also known as The Night of the Blind Terror, the 1972 Spanish-Portuguese horror film is written and directed by Amando de Ossorio. Lone Fleming, César Burner, María Elena Arpón, José Thelman star.
Tombs of the Blind Dead has been newly restored in 2K from the original uncut camera negative. It includes the original Spanish version, an English/Spanish hybrid soundtrack, and the re-edited US theatrical cut, each with lossless PCM 2.0 mono audio.

Tombs of the Blind Dead begins with a trio of friends getting together for a camping trip that quickly turns into bloodcurdling horror as a legion of long-dead Knights Templar rise from their graves in search of human flesh! When the Templars were originally executed for their cannibalistic rituals, they were hanged outside to die as crows pecked out their eyes. Now, armed with ancient swords and riding their skeletal undead horses into the night looking for prey, these mummified creatures cannot see… they hunt purely by sound alone.

Born September 9th, 1972 to Mary and John Kronbach in Great Falls, Minnesota. As the oldest of two kids he's both stubborn and protective, the former by instinct and the latter by necessity. With John's violent outbursts and propensity to gamble away most of the family income, and Mary's neglect in response to Ricky acting as a "tomboy" from a young age, home life for the Kronbach siblings was less than stellar.
To catch a break, Ricky would get into his allowance and bike down to Freddy's with his little brother Jeremy in tow. It happened often enough that multiple servers and one of the owners' daughters knew them by name. But late one Friday in November of 1987, tragedy came rushing up to meet the Kronbach's when Jeremy, aided by the owner's daughter, requested to see the Bonnie animatronic up close. No one exactly knows how the nine-year-old managed to get his head stuck between its jaws, triggering the springlock mechanism that killed him.
Following these events, John blamed Ricky for the death of his "only son" and unleashed a reign of terror on the teenager that would only end in further tragedy. When questioned about the events that took place during "The Christmas Massacre of '87", Ricky would claim to have been asleep during his parents' murder. At no point does he confide in anyone about the night terrors that lead up to the event—of the 7ft tall, striped marionette that led him towards the knife block on the kitchen counter.
The night terrors continue well into adulthood, even after his suspension from MSU's post-grad program, when he threatened one of his professors and picked fights with several classmates for unspecified reasons. With a criminal record and infamy attached to his family name, Ricky is forced to seek professional help when no one would employ him.
In the Spring of 1996, Ricky meets his career counselor, Steve Raglan, who offers him a night security gig. Ricky turns down the opportunity, and upon exiting the office he notices a magenta Chevrolet that seems familiar. Disconcerted that he can't pinpoint where he's seen it before, Ricky decides to skip town and start a new life altogether, as far away from his past as possible.
"I'm thinking Anaheim. Become an Imagineer. Someone who puts a smile on kids' faces, y'know?"
Strangely enough, in a Denny's out in the Middle of Nowhere, Colorado over a year later, he comes across the same car, the same career counselor, and Ricky is now certain "Steve Raglan" isn't who he claims to be.
"Steve Raglan" knows the name Kronbach, knows about Ricky's past and his impressive academic record, so he makes him one more offer the young man can't possibly refuse: if Ricky helps him finish an old project him and his old business partner set out to create in the 80s, then "Steve" can bring Ricky's brother back from the dead.

La increíble Toni Collette cumple 51 años
Antonia Collette (Blacktown, Nueva Gales del Sur; 1 de noviembre de 1972), conocida como Toni Collette, es una actriz australiana nominada al premio Óscar.
Toni Collette es hija de Bob Collette, camionero, y de Judy Collette, trabajadora de una empresa de mensajería. Es la mayor de tres hermanos. Toni comenzó su carrera como actriz en el instituto, y apareció en diversas obras teatrales estudiantiles. Posteriormente se matriculó en el National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), de Sídney, que, tras estudiar dos cursos, abandonó para comenzar a interpretar representaciones teatrales.
Saltó a la fama al protagonizar "Muriel's Wedding" (1994), una fábula social en tono de amarga comedia dirigida por P. J. Hogan. Para el papel tuvo que engordar en pocas semanas más de 18 kilos. En esa época tenía 22 años, y dicha película le valió una nominación al Globo de Oro como mejor actriz de comedia.

Más tarde, la actriz australiana logró debutar en Hollywood, compartiendo protagonismo con Gwyneth Paltrow y David Schwimmer en "Mi desconocido amigo"  1996. Tras aparecer en películas como "Emma" (1996), adaptación de la novela de Jane Austen o "Velvet Goldmine" (1998), Toni intervino en "The Sixth Sense" (1998), película de suspense de M. Night Shyamalan que se convirtió en la sensación del año. Por este último título sería nominada al Oscar a la mejor actriz de reparto, aunque la estatuilla sería para Angelina Jolie por "Inocencia interrumpida". También destacó en 2006 interpretando el papel de Sheryl Hoover en la aclamada película "Little Miss Sunshine".
En 2011 estuvo en el 'remake' de la comedia de terror "Noche de miedo", donde interpretó a la madre que cae bajo el hechizo del vampiro (Collin Farrell), estrenada en 2011

Collette es vegetariana, practica yoga y le encanta realizar viajes espirituales a la India, es una ferviente defensora de los derechos de los animales y es miembro de la organización PETA. PARTIES: Ingeborg, Hendrik and Vera Beenhakker. LOCATION: Ingeborg and Hendrik's home. TIMING: 1972 CONTENT WARNINGS: Allusions to spousal abuse and disordered eating. SUMMARY: A day in the life of a newly haunted Ingeborg, stuck in an unsatisfying marriage and trying her best at motherhood.
It was like this every day.
Wake. Hear the baby crying, but be stuck in the tangle of sheets and the terror that held her. Try to breathe. Try to breathe. Try to breathe, Ingeborg. That first gulp of air reactivating her body, stirring awake now. Untangle from the sheets. Try to ignore the wetness of the sweat that clung to her back. Swallow. Shake her hands. Try to forget what she dreamed of. Try to remember what it had been. Check her legs and arms for scratches.
Try not to wake Hendrik. That was most important. Let him rest, because if he wakes before his alarm, the day will be before it could start.
Go to the baby. Clutch her. Hope that her scratches wouldn’t stain Vera’s baby clothes. Let her drink. Hum to her, in the hope that she’d get a little easier. Sway with her, the prettiest thing that Inge had ever known, the prettiest thing she would ever hold. Tell her about her nightmares, because she was too young to understand the horrible things she dreamed of anyway, and didn’t every child want to hear their mother’s voice?
It was like this every day.
Make breakfast for Hendrik, but never for herself. “Is your appetite still bad?”, he’d ask, but not out of concern. His fingers would reach, wrap around her wrist and hold it up. “There is nothing on here, nothing on your bones at all. You’re going to fade away.” And then what purpose would she serve him? Child-bearing hips disappearing. Even her mother was making snide comments now. He’d let go, tut with annoyance and read his paper.
Eight A.M., and Hendrik would be gone. The house a sanctuary. The baby would cry again, and Inge would try to quiet her, but she wouldn’t hush. Inge would think of what the doctors had said, about how maybe there was something wrong with her that caused the night terrors. Something to do with her child, too, and how new mothers were often afflicted by this type of terror and depression.
Maybe it was her fault that Vera wouldn’t stop crying. (Hendrik would insinuate it was, slamming doors whenever the child would not stop. He’d grab her and ask her why she couldn’t get Vera to quiet down. Desperate. He was just desperate and tired, just like her.) 
It was like this every day.
She would try to sleep during the daytime, because somehow it was easier then. She would do the dishes. Slave in the kitchen. Vacuum every corner despite having done it already the day before. Have a staring contest with a sandwich and lose halfway through. Listen to Vera crying again, go to see her, beg her to quiet. Try and sleep, curled up on the bed with her babe — which might be the only moment where she felt at peace. The sun at its highest point, her darling child sleeping with her on the mattress that was just hers when Hendrik was out.
Five thirty P.M., dinner was served. Every day. Some kind of meat, with some kind of starch, with some kind of potato. If Hendrik’s beer wasn’t cold, the night would be ruined, so the beer was always cold. He would tell her of his day, smelling like the manure that hung in the air of their small village. He would not ask her of her day. He would comment on the food, hardly ever complimentary.
He would eat three plates, and she one half. “That’s why she keeps crying, because you’re not eating,” he would say, chastising and blaming as those were his favorite games. And then he’d retire to the couch (hand outstretched for another beer) and Inge would retire to the kitchen, to clean the mess she’d made.
It was like this every day. 
Hendrik would drink a few more beers. Became the type of husband no one would speak of, but everyone knew existed. Vera would cry. Inge would loiter. Hendrik would suggest maybe his wife sleep on the couch tonight, because she had kept him up again last night. He wouldn’t ask what was happening to her, why she woke up every morning unable to breathe. Why she’d scream.
He’d just ask her not to. And if she was going to, to do it in the living room where he would not be bothered. 
He would not hold Vera. He would not hold her, unless he wanted something else. He would not thank her for changing the sheets, making the bed smell fresh again even if his stench always ruined it.
He would retire to bed and Inge wouldn’t. She would sit on the couch and draw the things she’d dreamed with charcoal, staining her fingers and postponing what was sure to come.
Vera would cry, again. Hendrik would bellow to get the child to quiet. The charcoal would rub off on her daughter and Ingeborg would beg her to quiet, that she loved her so but she loved her most when she would be quiet, because otherwise daddy would get mad.
And then, eventually, she would retire. To the bed her husband banished her from, because in her still lived the hope that this night would be different. That this night, no dreams would come. That this night, if they did, he would hold her and help her breathe. That the next day would not be like this.

horror recs aaww yeahhh. mostly a peter cushing, christopher lee, and vincent price show bc i tend to fixate on them and their films a lot.
note: it kinda goes without saying that some of these have problematic elements and themes. i consume media critically, which should also kinda go without saying!!
feel free to hmu me for trigger warnings, but i can't guarantee i'll remember everything in the films.
HAMMER HORROR RECS
+ 'the curse of frankenstein' (1957) and just. the whole hammer frankenstein series, especially 'the revenge of frankenstein' and 'frankenstein created woman.' ('created woman' leans more heavily into the sci-fi aspects, but is more of a revenge slasher at heart.)
you can skip 'evil' and 'horror' (unless you're a completionist) bc they are the worst and aren't super important continuity wise ('horror' is totally outside of the main continuity bc it's a reboot!!)
+ 'horror of dracula' (1958) and 'the brides of dracula' (1960) are two of my fave films ever. they perfectly encapsulate that distinctly hammer-y gothic horror atmosphere, and are full of frills (pretty women) and thrills (scared silly men.)
most of the sequels are kinda meh BUT
'dracula ad 1972' (1972) is somewhat of a cult classic. it asks the vitally important questions 'what if dracula was fucking around in modern (aka 1972) london? and what if the writers absolutely detested hippies?' johnny alucard is a #bisexualking.
'satanic rites of dracula' (1973) isn't very good, but it is funny, and a somewhat direct sequel to 'ad 1972' so it's worth it imo.
and i wouldn't recommend any of the other sequels unless you're a completionist (like me,) but 'taste the blood of dracula' is pretty good.
+ 'the mummy' (1959) more gorgeous hammer decadence set and costume wise. christopher lee is insanely good in this, acting totally through his eyes and body language (which he also does a lot in some of the weaker dracula sequels when he refused to say lines he hated in the scripts lmao.)
+ 'the hound of the baskervilles' (1959) is a thriller take on a classic sherlock holmes story. not totally book accurate (hammer usually doesn't do super accurate adaptations,) but peter cushing is absolute fire as holmes. it's one of his career-best performances imo.
+ cash on demand (1961) is a christmas movie/pseudo-scrooge tale about a bank heist. it's more of a claustrophobic psychological thriller than a horror movie, but it has a bunch of strong performances and it really makes the most of itself. one of my personal top ten movies ever.
+ captain clegg (1962) is more of a swashbuckler/mystery than a horror film, but it's so much fun and a big 'comfort' movie of mine. i love pirates and parsons and smugglers ❤
+ 'the vampire lovers' (1970) evil canon lesbian/bi vampire ladies and pretty period fashion. it's part of the karnstein trilogy, and is probably the most accurate to the source material, 'carmilla.’
i do not recommend ‘lust for a vampire’ unless you are a completionist. it doesn’t even have peter cushing in it.
'twins of evil' (1971) is the final karnstein film and is a prequel. it might be the horniest and most gruesome tbh? but it's pretty good 👍
+ 'fear in the night' (1972) is a sneaky favorite of mine. psychological thriller that handles the topic of mental illness and its mentally ill characters pretty well, imo.
+ 'captain kronos - vampire hunter' (1974) do you like swashbuckling vampire hunters and fabulous twin nobles? then you'll like this one. 'kickass' and 'badass' are the main adjectives i'd use to describe it.
AMICUS RECS
(NOTE: amicus borrowed a lot of actors from hammer, so they are kinda similar vibe-wise on occasion.)
+ 'dr. terror's house of horrors' (1965) horror anthology with tarot card readings as its framing device, which is such a whipass concept.
+ 'the house that dripped blood' (1971) horror anthology about a cursed house or smth :) and while it is pretty good over all, i'm recommending this one mainly bc the 'waxworks' segment is one of the finest pieces of cinema i've ever seen.
+ 'tales from the crypt' (1972) horror anthology based on 'tales from the crypt' comics, and it has a couple of really good ones. great primer for getting into their anthologies.
+ 'madhouse' (1974) one of my lowkey favorite movies bc i love gay old horror actors hamming it up and having fun and making fun of themselves. and i love projecting onto herbert flay and paul toombes so much <333 #lovewins
OTHER RECS
+ 'frankenstein' (1931) and 'bride of frankenstein' (1935) if u haven't seen these two you have got to fr fr. 'bride' is a perfect score in my book and just. holy fuck. one of the most insane, profound, beautiful movies ever. stg. dr pretorius is everything 2 me <33 i ❤ heart gay old men.
+ the invisible man (1933) i get the feeling you've seen this one? but it's lots of fun :) claude rains is amazing as the titular invisible man. honestly i kinda prefer this movie to the book.
+ 'psycho' (1960) a classic, one of the og slashers. i'm assuming you're seen this one just bc it's so popular? but it really is That Good.
also 'psycho ii' is fucking amazing. i haven't seen any of the other sequels yet, but 'ii' is just. so so heartbreaking. a near perfect sequel that really dives into the aftermath of the events of the first film.
+ 'corruption' (1968) absolutely not the best but it starts strong and is just damn fascinating. about a dysfunctional couple tearing each other to shreds at its core.
+ 'the abominable dr. phibes' (1971) a revenge slasher kinda considered to be a precursor to 'saw?' idk lol. but it has some fucking epic kills. vincent price really delivers here emotionally as the title character and it drives me up the wall.
'dr. phibes rises again' (1972) is also pretty good. weaker kills imo but a stronger protagonist.
also while i don't think you Have To watch 'dr. phibes' first (i didn't,) 'madhouse' is kind of an homage to it.
+ 'the wicker man' (1973) folk horror/musical masterpiece about a devoutly religious cop investigating the disappearance of a young girl on an island inhabited by pagans. if you haven't seen this just know that it is a 10/10 must watch.
+ 'house of the long shadows' (1983) about an author who's dared to spend the night in a creepy house that was once owned by a super fucked up family. doesn't really kick into gear until all the old people start showing up, but it's fun.
+ fright night (1985) epic vampire movie pastiche B) peter vincent means the world to me fr. it makes me cry sometimes. the sequel is pretty good too!! but i wouldn't really recommend the 2011 remake.
