I find nightjars weird cause I expect them to have teeth instead of a beak. I think I blame anurognathids for this.
Tbh, I feel if they could have teeth, they'd re evolve teeth

BOTD: White-tailed Nightjar
Photo: Chris Harrison
"This rather long-tailed nightjar is found in open grassy or shrubby habitats from Costa Rica across much of northern South America. Both sexes show a distinctive buffy nape. Males have extensive white in the tail, especially visible in flight. Strictly nocturnal; single individuals are most often seen sitting on the ground at night, sallying up to catch flying insects. Listen for the song, which begins with a sharp 'pik' note, followed by a longer whistled 'seeeee,' ascending and then descending."

What’s your opinions on Night Jars? I think they’re fascinating birds with very unique appearances!
All of Caprimulgiformes are super cool for sure! It's not just the unique appearances that fascinate me but the fact that that appearance results from some really amazing adaptations to nighttime insect hunting that allows them to fill a similar niche to bats. Plus, they have some spectacular displays and songs, too! If you're ever lucky enough to be in their habitat at night during the breeding season, the sheer volume of their ringing calls through the forest is incredible.
Where I am, the most common one is Common Nighthawk, and the male's divebomb courtship and territorial display is insanely cool. Racing toward the ground only to pull up at the last second so that the air rushes through their highly-modified wings to create a sonic boom? God. The first time I heard it I didn't understand what animal was even making that sound. Then, to be in a male's territory during the breeding season where he will use that same tactic at your head to intimidate you into leaving his area? I mean, talk about effective!

BOTD: Spot-tailed Nightjar
Photo: Eric Carpenter
"Small nightjar of savanna and grassland with scattered bushes and palmettos. Spends the day roosting cryptically on the ground, but at night may be found beside quiet roads and tracks. Like all nightjars, eyes reflect amber-red in lights. Song is high and insectlike, unlikely to draw attention."

Not me changing the notification sound on my phone to the nightjar I used to hear in the evenings growing up. I miss that sound.
