I looked up gift ideas for our upcoming anniversary. The big 1-0. Ten years is a long time to be together. It’s not as long of a time as some of the other people that we know, but it still feels remarkable with all the chaos in the world and within ourselves. Historically, anniversary gifts for ten years were tin themed. Modern anniversary gifts are centered around diamonds. Jupiter hangs closely above us the week before, a nod to the magic of the former.

Tin is a malleable element that can easily be bent by the human hand or melted. Diamonds are formed after billions of years of pressure and are mined without a lot of sustainable or ethical practices. The devotion symbolized within tin and diamonds oscillates between competitive and expensive. The alchemy of health and immortality. Tin and diamonds: the sacred and the powerful. Purity and invincibility wielded as facets of true love. Because true love is sold to us as absolution and the ultimate prize: one’s soul mate and best friend delicately wrapped into one package. But you have always felt like you were more than that to me.

I remember when we found a hardcover copy of The Secret Garden sitting on a pile of books at a local event. I was going to leave it, but the way you softly and casually said that it was your favorite felt like a confession. It was one of those moments of kismet where the weight of the situation lodges itself into your chest. No one knows that it was my favorite, too. Yet to meet a boy who tenderly loved and saved that novel from a free pile made me feel protective of you and of us in a way that I haven’t felt with anyone else. 

I strive for something more shelf stable with you. Something pragmatic, that holds the best of both worlds: unwavering, collaborative, the whole is stronger than the sum of its parts. It will always remind me of the home that I have within you, and all the things that you see within me that I can’t see or name. 

Happy anniversary, love. We blinked and it became ten years. I hope that I have many, many more blinks of time with you because it will frankly never be enough. I love you.
