You did see something about magic ink!! I rambled away about the kind the Shadow uses over here earlier, but magic ink can come in as many different forms as there are magics and magical subtypes on Ehl!!

Which is to say, a lot.

I imagine Elemental tattoos would be the most popular - only Ehlves and some half-Ehlves can be Elementalists at all, and even then, they can generally only be one kind. And because Mind/Dark Elementalism is highly regulated when it comes to Alchemy, that leaves the other 8 Elements up for grabs.

So, if made and applied properly, anyone who:

a) has skin that allows for tattooing to happen and stick b) isn't already a magic user of that type or the Element opposing it on the Wheel of Venn (e.g. Water and Fire can't coexist in one person wrt Elementalism, Dark Mages are less susceptible to Sorcery and the Calling of Deepfolk; this applies to other tattoos as well) AND c) doesn't have something Weird about their biology/existence that fucks with magic (i.e. Goblins, Dragonkin (they are Rock And Magma, not fleshy), and Deepfolk)

... can choose to get a tattoo that allows them to use any magic that doesn't break the above rules.

So, in theory, a human can get a tattoo that lets them manipulate metal or plants like a Metal or Plant Mage, but not both. Or a magicless Emry person could get a tattoo that lets them shapeshift like the Ahsitari or other Shifters, and another made with human blood that lets them teleport short distances when they draw blood from it and link it to their destination. But said Emry wouldn't be able to use their human tattoo indefinitely, because human blood magic consumes the blood used for it, and theirs would deplete really quickly.

I'm sure in the future, I'll have a WIP that explores the magic tattoos a lot more, along with all the other things that change/get discovered throughout TMS and Whispers, so these mechanics aren't 100% set in stone, but that's the gist of them so far!!

with my fourth rewrite officially started, it was time for an updated wip intro! some settings, conflicts, and character arcs have drastically changed, but we're hauling ass to finish this damn thing.

🏛️ SUMMARY

a hades and persephone myth retelling in which kore, newly dead, is taken to the underworld to rot as mortals do. when hades discovers she is the godly offspring of his older siblings, he tricks her into eating pomegranate seeds and siphons her abilities into his own domain, unleashing a curse that ultimately causes him to start to decay.

NAMESAKE explores stolen girlhood, death and rebirth, patriarchal structures, grief and atonement, and redeemed villains through lyrical, flowery prose. this novel is ideal for devourers of anne carson's translations, circe by madeline miller, and ardent readers of louise glück.

follow along as demeter receives her deserved redemption arc as her harrowing grief threatens the balance of life and death; kore blooms into persephone, queen of the underworld and polluter of the gaian realm with festering necromancy; and hades uncovers a love for humanity and what it means to have agency in a body robbed of it.

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 06/01

notes: the draft is officially begun and i made a lot of progress! i expect this will get weirder as i divert more and more from draft 1, but hey, we like an easy start. (and there were definitely things that changed!)

Every movement of her armour echoed off the stone. Isi hoped the dragon would not be alerted to her presence too soon… but then again, it had likely already been disturbed by the quake. And taking her armour off would be an even worse idea. That thought was only further validated when the tunnel opened out into a larger cave, and they caught their first glimpse of the dragon. A small crack in the stone high above them offered just enough light to see the creature. Pale pink, significantly larger than any creature Isi had ever seen… and asleep, it seemed, curled up in a nest of sorts against the far wall. Its scaly sides rose and fell, slowly but rhythmically. Isi paused; the dragon seemed to be no threat right at that moment, so she could take her time. A sweet smell lingered in the cave. The dragon’s nest seemed to be the source: plants and flowers of all colours and sorts stuck out of it, flattened under the dragon’s weight. “It’s beautiful,” breathed Robin behind her. Isi took a deep, slow breath. “It is.” Truly, she had never seen anything like it. And she had orders to kill it.

Seasoning: R is mint. He's mostly chill but a little bit spicy if you bite into too much of him. Savannah is sweet and sour sauce - what is that - because uh she is.

Weather: R is a blustery day but it's not cold, exactly, and the sun is out. You're fighting the wind but you're happy about it. Savannah is the boiling heat of midsummer. You're dying but you're happy about it.

Color: R is brick red, but according to Savannah he's orange. He's loud, he draws your eye, and he never shuts up. Savannah is pink, and she's adorable, and she'll fight you.

Sky: R is the pale, pale blue right before the sky turns red at sunset. Savannah is the effervescent aurora in all its cotton candy glory.

Magical power: R is projected thermography, which is great considering his terrible memory. Savannah is colorized telepathic empathy, which is great considering her tendency to suck at secrets.

House plant: R is a sunflower that is too tall for your low ceilings. Savannah is an orchid that is not the color you thought it'd be.

Weapon: R is flirtation, and if that fails, fists. He's a crappy fighter, though. Savannah is intimidation, and if that fails, fists. She's better than R.

Subject: R is history, which again, the irony. Savannah is athletics.

Social Media: R gets insta, because he needs to have visual representation of what he did yesterday. Savannah is tumblr. She's a tumblr girlie and you're not even mad.

Makeup product: R is eyeliner maybe? Dramatic lad. Savannah is the funkiest eyeshadow.

Candy: R is dark chocolate covered candied orange peels. Savannah is nerds rope.

Fear: R fears being overlooked, and also being perceived. You know. Mortifying experience. Savannah could stand to be a little more afraid.

Ice cube shape: R is actual cubes. Savannah is like. I dunno. Mickey mouse. Something gimmicky.

Method of long distance travel: train for both. They really like riding on trains, or the metro, or trolleys.

Art style: R is that guy that does the troubled birds. Adrian somebody. Matt Adrian. Savannah is that guy that does the blocky color landscapes that are nonsense up close but super cool far out. Uh.

Mythological creature: R is a changeling, but instead of being a faerie he's just another human, but he's convinced he's special forever because he has this funny mark on him. He is special! He's a failed changeling. Savannah is a mermaid, and yes I'm saying that because she loves to swim.

Piece of stationary: R is a postcard and Savanah is a tiny note in a tiny envelope.

Celestial body: R is Pluto, because he doesn't know if he deserves to be in the gang or not. Savannah is a supernova, because she deserves to be.

Happy Fab Friday!! I actually made it! I always remember this either the Saturday after or the wrong Friday <.<

I’ve been productive this week! I’m working on a wip guide (so my blog can be all organized and people can see the wips I’ve not worked on in what feels like eight years XD) but I have a couple intros and some character introductions I need to make. I got one wip intro up and a character intro that I’ve been putting off for I-don’t-want-to-admit how long! Now for the others…. sigh. But this is a good start.

And aside from that, I got back into working on one my first-ever wips! I just went to browse for the character intro but I ended up adding a few hundred words and I realized how much I missed it.

NAMESAKE 🌷💀🏛️ EXCERPTS

nano is going well so far! i'm a tiny bit behind, but i've been sprinting a ton the past week, developing new core characters, and mapping out the mystery of kore's death and persephone's rise as queen. decided to flesh out the daimons and personifications who fill the land of the dead as well, which led to the birth of calamity and misery (and gloom, who isn't currently featured.) they're delightful, callous, morbid little menaces.

find the wip intro here for more context, but here are some fresh excerpts from the last five days!

from chapter one:

hekate has a role in the original myth and in my previous rewrite, albeit much smaller. i'm fleshing her out to become more involved in the story right from the start. so far, she's deeply envious and desperate to prove herself as demeter's ward and kore's sister.

the twins and dionysus are the only half-siblings from zeus whom kore will not refer to as "cousin." like them, she's suffered hera's ire, but their proximity in age has made them close.

from chapter two:

kore's first glimpse of the bone palace. i intend to carve out most of my setting descriptions from last year's rewrite because they're already *chef's kiss* imo, but had to have something on the page for her to react to. and who am i if not routinely depressed by the extinction of lions from Ancient Greece. 🥲

aforementioned little devils. calamity and misery are new editions and suffer from sameness right now, but im hoping to flesh them out properly in my sprints next week. their relationship with hades is so unexpectedly tender and is really helping me understand my evolving god of the dead.

lastly, from hades's intro chapter:

i love them, your honour.

goals for next week are to catch up, hammer down the chapter voices, and curl myself inside the mind of my new villain.

notes: at this point in the draft it's a nice balance of "broadly similar to draft 1" and "tweaking stuff to make it fit properly". i think the character moments are much better this draft :)

As Sierra and Holly left their little campsite, Enya fluttered over and landed on Isi’s shoulder, then smacked her with her tail. “What can I do for you?” Isi asked. Enya grumbled, took off, and landed by the fire SB was halfway through constructing. When Isi stayed where she was, Enya huffed smoke and gestured with her head towards the half-finished fire. “Is she gonna help me light this thing?” SB said. Isi smiled. “I have no idea, but she is hungry, and thinks we should be eating already.” “She’s right. It’s getting late for an evening meal.” “Sierra and Holly will be back soon.” Isi directed her next words to Enya. “Soon, Enya. Soon.” Enya huffed again, then curled up on the ground.

WIP(s): The Serpents They Stone - In an alternate version of our world where gods lived alongside humankind and brought them to a new level of technological prosperity, the dreaded World Serpent Jörmungandr reveals herself to have survived Ragnarok while rescuing her villainous old flame, the Phantom Queen Badb. Quickly finding herself pursued by the entire world for the prophecy that promises she will end the world, Jörmungandr dedicates herself to saving Badb from the "Black Pharaoh" that enslaves her - even as Badb is forcibly driven to remain sinister and create chaos.

Miasma - Based on the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland & the later Black Death, the island of Ériu is besieged by the foreign Anglii and their High King is killed. His daughter, Hail, dies with him, but she is resurrected by the serpent goddess Corchen with one objective - to kill King Godric across the ocean, no matter the cost. Her mission soon intertwines with that of a mysterious plague doctor's, who seeks to stop an oncoming plague - one that could spell the end of all life.

Mythology(ies): All, but predominantly Norse, Egyptian, Aztec, Celtic (mostly Welsh/Irish), Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Sumerian, Mayan, Slavic, Hawaiian, Christian, etc.

WIP(s): Maidens and Monsters: sapphic retelling of Scylla’s monsterization, in which she is so beautiful, the ocean (and it’s patrons) cannot help but be drawn to her and too much divine attention in one place always leads to ruin.

Light and What Lies Below: In-between of Maidens and Monsters and OH, in which Calypso makes a deal with Hades, creating Davy Jones’ locker before the sailor is even born.

Ocean’s Heart: Dual POV retelling merging Ogygia Calypso with Davy Jones Calypso, in which when he binds her to a mortal body, he binds her to the island as well.

Her Name is Kore: Persephone/Hades retelling in which Kore knows, even as an unannounced goddess, that she is destined to be something more than just Demeter’s daughter.

WIP(s): Kingdom of Ichor (A YA fantasy series) A modern retelling of classic Greek myths with the gods and goddesses being a focal point. Each book in the series will be told in dual POV following a potential couple. I don't know how long I want the series to be, but I do know it's gonna be pretty expansive! The first book is titled Of Flowers and Darkness, which will be a retelling of the myth of Hades & Persephone.

WIP(s): Fuck Gods (also referred to as WIP MILF). Life has not been kind to those at Nueva Vida Institution, a residential facility for “deeply disturbed” individuals. The institution seems normal from the outside, but a group of friends on the inside think that there’s more to this place than meets the eyes: they think it’s a end-of-life sacrificial home for those the gods have chosen, and that their life-forces are being drained. They’ve decided that before the gods can get to them, they’re going to complete their life-long goals of getting closure. And to do this, they plan to kill some gods.

Mythology(ies): Greek myths are retold through the character arcs and through parallels. Achilles, Sisyphus, Medusa, Icarus, Pandora's Box

Set in the fictitious province called San Andres, following the lives and misadventures of related characters, all while uncovering the secrets of their ancestors and the land.
