Ridges and Valleys of the Zagros Mountains This astronaut photograph, taken from the International Space Station, illustrates the undulating patterns formed by the geology of the Zagros Mountains in southern Iran. The image shows a 300-kilometer (190-mile) portion of the larger Zagros Range (1600 kilometers/990 miles), which runs along the northern coast of the Persian Gulf. Several small islands are visible in the gulf. This view shows two major geological features. The first, extending across the photo, is the elongated fold mountains and intervening valleys of heavily folded limestone layers. These mountains and valleys are oriented approximately east to west. The upfolded sections form the mountain ridges and the downfolded sections form the long valleys between the ridges. While the rocks themselves are significantly older, the folding took place during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs (from about 23 million to 2.5 million years ago). The tectonic forces involved in this folding resulted from the rigid Arabian Plate pushing in a northerly direction against the limestone strata on the Eurasian Plate. These forces have also produced a great depression in the Earth’s surface which created the Persian Gulf. The other notable geological feature in the image is a series of roughly circular salt domes. These domes appear as numerous relatively small, dark patches, each of which is indicated on this geological map. These local uplifts have formed because they are made of salt, which is less dense than the overlying rock and thus tends to rise upward through it. Salt domes also form on parts of the islands in this region of the Persian Gulf. The larger Qeshm Island includes a single salt dome near its western end. Astronaut photograph ISS066-E-182850 was acquired on February 7, 2022, with a Nikon D5 digital camera using an 50 millimeter lens and is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 66 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. I got my dad's old Nikon Coolpix 990 camera out of storage to substitute for my phone.

During the disassembly process, I had to take the front drums off to access the spindle/steering arm/knuckle bolts. The spindle had to come off, so I told myself I'd just do a thorough job of cleaning and re-greasing the wheel bearings and spindle. I used diesel fuel to clean the outer bearing, washer, nut, and locking castle ring. For the spindle, I first wiped the old grease off with a paper towel, then used carburetor cleaner while gently scrubbing the rustier, gunkier spots. The carb cleaner seemed to leave the spindle prone to rust, so I sprayed some WD-40 on it for a thin protective film while I got some proper wheel bearing grease. Also pictured is the left side strut rod arm, which is a pain in the butt to get to on my car as the end on the frame pokes very close to the exhaust pipe. As with the other one, I used marine clean and a hand wire brush to scrape off old gunk, rinse, then apply WD-40 to the threads. I clamped it in my vise and spun the adjusting nut to help access and clean the threads around it.

Here is the suspension mostly put back in! I have a few more items to torque down, but the car is almost back down on the ground!

I decided to use the rubber shock bushings supplied with the shocks, since I did the same for the rear and I don't want to feel every vibration. I tried to use grade 8 bolts and nuts where I could just so I was sure things wouldn't break apart, but all the hardware that has come off so far seems to be grade 5 at most.

And here is my shock absorber bolted in! Kind of reminds me of that old book, the hungry caterpillar. Despite all the red, I'm trying to go for a green secondary/accent color where I can. These shock boots were $5 each on amazon and I hope they work. The original shocks just had the bare shaft exposed on the front, so hopefully these will extend the life of the shocks, and I don't have to worry too much about water and mud getting in because it's a street car not a mud bogger.

Canadian Rockies While orbiting over western Montana, an astronaut aboard the International Space Station captured this photograph of the northern Rocky Mountains, also known as the Canadian Rockies. Sprawling approximately 4,800 kilometers (3,000 miles) long and nearly 650 kilometers (400 miles) wide at certain points, the Rockies are North America’s largest mountain range. The Rocky Mountains extend from British Columbia, Canada, southeast toward New Mexico, in the United States. At least 100 separate ranges comprise the Rockies, and they are separated into four geologic subdivisions: the Canadian and Northern Rockies, Middle Rockies, the Southern Rockies, and the Colorado Plateau. This image features the greater portion of the Canadian Rockies, which extends through northern British Columbia and southwestern Alberta. While there are approximately 50 peaks in the Canadian Rockies surpassing 3,350 meters (11,000 feet) in elevation, Mount Robson—in the center of the photo—is the highest peak at about 3,950 meters (12,970 feet) tall. Jasper National Park, in Alberta, encompasses around 11,214 square kilometers (4,330 square miles) of mountainous terrain, glaciers, forests, and alpine landscapes. The park was established in 1907 and is one of several contiguous parks in the Canadian Rockies that have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park also supports a vast diversity of wildlife. There are 53 different types of mammals found in the park including bears (both black and grizzly), wolves, elk, and cougars. Part of the Coast Mountains, a major range along the Pacific coastline of British Columbia and Alaska, is visible in the upper-left part of the image. Glaciers carved out numerous valleys along the 1,600-kilometer (990-mile) long range, including several fjords along British Columbia’s Pacific coast. NIKON COOLPIX 990

ニコンのコンデジである「クールピクス」は1997年に発売された「クールピクス100」から始まる。 一眼レフは富士フィルムと共同で開発した1995年発売のE2が最初だが、1998年のE3sまで続くEシリーズは軒並み100万前後のプライスタグをぶら下げていて、コンシューマー向けとは言えないカメラであった。 1999年に「D1」が発売、これが65万円（十分に高価だが）となり、新聞などの報道関係に使われるようになった。 この後、2001年に「D100」が30万で発売され、ようやくデジタル一眼レフが手の届くものになってきたのである。 このクールピクス990は2000年の発売。 特徴でもあるスイバル式のボディは1998年の900から始まり、910、950と続き、990以降も995と続いていくが、コンシューマー向けのニコンのデジタルカメラという意味では、コンデジとはいえ、125,000円のタグを付けた押しも押されぬフラッグシップであった。

堂々たる体躯

コンデジとはいうものの、このスイバル式のボディは決してコンパクトとは言えない。 しかし、このしっかりとしたグリップと、あるべき所にあるスイッチやボタンが実に安定した撮影を可能にしている。 形状こそ、それまでのカメラの形状からは程遠いものだが（これはニコンが一眼レフカメラとの区別を明確にするために、わざとそうしたデザインを採用していたのではないかと推測する）カメラとしての本質的な部分は残していると言えるだろう。 シールでペタリではなく、大きめのニコンのロゴがエンボスになっている所や、グリップのカラー部分がファンの間では好評だったようである。 ボディはマグネシウム製、かなり気合の入ったフラッグシップたる体躯である。

過渡期

メディアはCF（ただしType1。2GBまでしか認識しない）、総画素数334万画素、ISO感度は400まであるが、ノイズリダクションの機能はない。

これまで紹介したジャンクコンデジと同様に2000年前後のデジタルカメラは黎明期と言ってもいいだろう。 もっとも現在が完成形かといえば、先のことは分かるはずもないので、デジタルカメラがどうなるのが完成なのかは分からないが、こと静止画に特化するなら約200万画素で1,920×1,080＝2,073,600となって2K対応、約800万画素で3,840×2,160＝8,294,400となるので4K対応。 話題の8Kは同様の計算で3300万画素だが、これはまだ実用ではない段階だから、現状では完成形といっても過言ではない。 それどころか2000万画素なんて当たり前にあるのだから、一歩先を行っていると言えるだろう。 ちなみに8Kは7,680×4,320＝33,177,600で、パブリックビューイングサイズである。

メディアがない！

古いデジカメを弄っていると時々直面するのが「メディアがない」問題である。この990はCFカードだがType1の2GBまでしか認識しない。 ウチにあるCFがすべて4GB以上なのを知っていたが、SDからCFに変換するアダプターを持っているので、1GBや2GBのSDをかませて使おうと思っていたのだけど、これがまったく認識されない。 仕方がないので、また古いCFカードを新しく買う事になってしまった。 もちろん新品もあるが、これがまた異様に高い。1000円もしないカメラの為に2000円も払ってカードを買うのは癪に障るので 、あちこち電話をして中古を手に入れたのである。

他にもxDピクチャーカードとかスマートメディアとか極初期のメモリースティックとか。 もう今では探すのが困難な物が使われていることが多く、初めからSDカードを使っていたのはパナソニックくらいではないだろうか。 またこの時代のコンデジはRAW対応ではなくJPEGなのが普通なので、メモリーの容量も少ないから、ほぼMB（メガバイト）仕様なのである。 市場を探せばないことはないのだけど、もう需要がないのでコスト高になっているせいか値段が高いので、またメディアを探す旅に出ることになる。 カメラを購入したところに売っていたりする事もあるのだが、まぁ、まずないと思ったほうがいい。

他にも古いデジカメあるあるで、バッテリー問題とかもあるのだけど、それはまたの機会に。

補色フィルター

このカメラはいわゆるカメラとしての部分をニコン、他のデジタル部分を三洋電機が担当している。 カメラ好きの方なら今さら言う必要もないが、カメラメーカー数あれど、イメージセンサーのメーカーはそれほど多くない。N社のカメラにS社のセンサーなんてのは珍しくもなんともない。 では各所それぞれに発色だったりの違いがあるのはなぜかというと、これはセンサーで捉えた情報を画像処理するエンジンが違うせいだ。 なので、この990も当然エンジン（と呼ぶには、まだ未完成なのだけど）を介して画像処理をしているのだけど、デジタルカメラはCCDセンサーから色情報を取り出すのにカラーフィルターというのを使う。 今は殆どが原色フィルターと言われるRGBを取り出すフィルターが使われている。

3色分のデータをRGBカラー空間のデータへと変換し、人間の眼は緑に対して感度がよいという性質を応用して、RGB各色のフィルターを均等に配置するのではなく、G（緑）用を他の2倍に増やすことでシャープに見せる工夫がされている。原色系フィルターは色の鮮やかなトーンを得ることができるが、光の透過率が悪く、補色系フィルターに比べると低感度になる傾向がある。

このカメラ（この年代のカメラは割とありがちだが）は原色に対しての補色フィルターが使われている。

原色系フィルターに比べて波長の透過範囲の広いフィルターで、C、M、Yの3色とともに、人間の眼にとって最も多くの輝度情報が含まれるG（緑）を加えた4色でデータをつくり、最終的に演算処理によりRGBの原色を生み出してカラー写真を構成している。原色系フィルターより多くの入射光を利用できることから、一般的に解像度が高くなる。 低画素である事は引き伸ばしたときの解像に影響が出るわけだが、このフィルターを使うことで、その弱点をカバーしていると思われる。

発色が渋い感じがするのはこのためだが、300万画素の画像としては、なかなかの解像感を保っている。

本当のことを言えば、この990ではなくて、221万画素の950を探していたのだけど、まぁ、こういったものは一期一会なので、ハードオフの罠にハマってきた次第である。
