999 Week 2023 - The Ninth Man

this one is much shorter, especially since we don't get to see much of him and that he's also dead. but this time it's from someone who used to work at cradle

You used to work for Cradle Pharmaceutical, pretty high up the food chain too. Enough to interact semi-regularly with the executives nine years ago. Hongou gave you the creeps despite how kind he acted; Nijisaki reminded you of an overly dramatic rich theatre kid; Musashidou was your average rich villain; and Kubota was just kind of there.

Kubota rarely spoke up, almost as if he was afraid of everyone and everything. But you gotta admit, that man was a genius when it came to technology. Completely refined all the most used technology at the company, and when he ran out doing that he worked on the more minor pieces. Though as time went on, he did start to do less and less on the company while becoming more fidgety. You remember the few times you caught him by surprise and he was like a cat, jumping away. Once, you asked him about it. He gave you a jittery excuse and avoided you as much as he could for a whole month. He obviously tried to hide it, but it was obvious. Next, you asked the three others. Musashidou laughed arrogantly and told you in the nicest terms to screw off else you get fired, Hongou said it was a personal project they’re working on, and Nijisaki literally just waved you away.

You don’t remember too much about Kubota. It was a long time after all. You remember his office being cluttered with items but nothing personal, him passing out from refusal to sleep soon citing nightmares before his resignation, him chugging coffee almost constantly, as black as it seems Hongou’s soul is considering he killed him, Musashidou and Nijisaki. Maybe so was his, as there are reports that he helped kidnap children

You’ve been reading up on the case as of late, thinking that you were fortunate to have left years ago. It’s been brought up by your coworkers over and over, especially since they know you worked there. But the funny thing is, you can’t exactly say much. He wasn’t a very significant man to you, though maybe he is a bit more now, now that you know of his sins.

Alright, I'll say it: Jack Harkness and the Doctor's relationship is possibly the most fleshed out/complicated dynamic in Doctor Who and that is INCLUDING the master/doctor relationship. Seriously, think about it:

the fact that when they meet jack is presented as sleazy con man and the doctor makes him brave- makes him good

but that they are both willing to die for rose as long as she is safe

and then she comes back and dooms them both to live (even though jack has already died for her and the doctor WILL die for her)

(ninerosejack is canon and you cannot convince me otherwise)

but then the doctor sees jack as immortal as someone he COULD spend the rest of his life with

and instead of embracing it like you'd think he would because he is so wrecked by people leaving him/being left by him the doctor RUNS bc the Doctor is so scared of jack of what he means of what he is

jack ends up abandoned in dalek dust goes back in time to find the doctor suffers a hundred years alone/being tortured but STILL WAITS

(screw amy being the girl who waited or rory being the boy who waited- Jack Harkness is the boy who waited and he did it FIRST)

Jack finds out that he was abandoned. that the man that he loves HATES the sight of him. that the doctor would rather have a genocidal murderer than have him

and so Jack gets the hell out of dodge to go to a man who DOES love him

and don't get me wrong Jack loves Ianto and Jack DOES remember Ianto until he dies as the Face of Boe don't forget that (protecting Novice Hame from the virus as he couldn't Ianto

BUT AFTER EVERYTHING THE DOCTOR HAS DONE TO JACK JACK STILL LOVES THEM

Jack still considers five billion years cursed to never die to be BETTER than the alternative: dying a young time-agent-turned-con-man

Jack has more reason than any other companion save maybe Amy to hate the Doctor & yet spends 20 years in jail to rescue Thirteen still LOVES HER

AND AFTER FIVE BILLION YEARS HE ORGANIZES THAT FIRST MEETING ON SATELLITE FIVE HE ORGANIZES 9/ROSE'S FIRST DATE

jack harkness is a living ghost a reminder of the doctor's failures a physical fixed point and yet he still loves the girl who cursed him and the time lord that turned him into the kind of person that would give his dying breaths to protect the last of humanity in a dying city and tell the doctor that he is not alone

because fuck it, YANA was a warning but also a reminder a final gift

jack had been there all along, a ghost an echo a PROMISE

nine is just so besotted with rose he cant even pretend to be annoyed at her for more than a second. she struggles to pronounce raxacoricofallapatorius and at first hes like “🙄🙄🙄” and shes like “no hang on!” and then as she starts getting the hang of it his attitude pivots so quickly. he breaks out into the dopiest smile and she jumps into his arms and they hug and he swings her around and they’re so giddy and he’s so proud of her for such a tiny, silly reason. made for each other behavior.

999 Week 2022 - The Ninth Man

took me a good little while to figure out what to do for this back when I was outlining the oneshots a bit but I found out what to write about for his future.

You are dead.

You’ve been dead for at least a month now.

But you’re still on Earth.

You’re a ghost.

You’re a ghost without a purpose.

All you do is haunt others, watching them silently.

Hongou is your usual victim, probably because he’s the only one you can bear to look at after the game.

He mainly just sits in his cell, a shell of the madman you watched murder two others in cold blood to keep his identity a secret, just like he did to you.

Your death was instant but painful, and instead of waking up in the fiery pits of hell like you know you deserve, you woke up in a pile of blood and flesh, a different kind of hell you guess.

You had screamed, but nobody heard. You screamed again when you managed to fall through the door.

It took oddly quick for you to realize everything.

It shocked you, but you had to get over it quickly to keep up.

So, you followed the others. You tried to scream at them to not trust Hongou and you desperately wished that in your frenzy of “oh god I’m going to die” you yelled out his name or codename or whatever instead of forgetting his name in your panic like the idiot you are.

The more you looked at some of the others, the more you realized you recognized them.

Lotus was obviously her daughters’ mother, Seven looked just like the detective that had to be taken out of the way but the remaining four, excluding Junpei who no matter how hard you thought about it you couldn’t recognize, those four were the most familiar.

They were former participants. They were from nine years ago.

Snake was the blind child who despite everything stayed calm, Clover was the panicky one who kept crying for her dear brother, Santa was one of the two siblings who managed to be in the same game by accident and was always stubborn and headstrong except when it came to his sister.

His sister. Oh god, his sister.

Her face haunts your dreams. They’ve been doing so for the last nine years. You’ve been trying to get away from her face but now she came back to haunt you, just like you’re haunting others now.

She was Zero.

You weren’t exactly surprised, considering she was alive and not dead. But that was only your main theory. You thought that maybe Lotus did this as revenge for her daughters, or maybe it was Hongou again, or maybe all of them were in on it to get revenge on you and the other executives.

But it was the sister.

You blame Hongou for all this. The once grand but now pitiful Hongou that’s just sitting in his cell as you stare at him.

But you know that it was your fault too. For accepting a deal with the Devil.

You’re probably going to follow him around because following a man going to jail is what you deserve, but maybe, just maybe, you’ll find out how to move on to Hell before somebody mistakenly lets you into Heaven.

Gideon at the end of Nona The Ninth strikes me as.. really odd. I know some people thought she's out of character because she's kinda mean - which I don't agree with - but honestly every time I get to that part I think: She's smarter than that.

I know fanon Gideon usually portrays her as a huge idiot and a goofball (fair enough for the most part) but she's also one hell of a skeptic and stubborn character that does NOT bend to authority easily. And let's remember The Unwanted Guest: We know that just by the nature of the Lyctor process Gideon must have picked up some stuff from Harrow as well, we even see it happen when she starts discussing basic necromancy at the end of Nona.

So, Gideon is now being sent to the ninth to kill Alecto, John's Cavalier, and take his place going forward, or at least this is what she says.

You see what I'm going at? She's smarter than that.

I am NOT saying she is acting out character by the way! But I think we don't give her motivations enough credit beyond being reckless because of grief. Gideon Nav who all her life has done nothing but hatch escape plans and NEARLY succeeded? Gideon Nav who is carrying part of Harrows soul? Gideon Nav WHO WATCHED THE EVENTS OF HARROW THE NINTH UNFOLD WITH HARROWS EYES?

I guess what I'm wondering is: What's her plan?
