Feudal Handmaid OctoberTM knows the terms "jerk," "gross," "freak out," "okay," and "yeah" in the modern senses, but not "lawn," which has been a word in the landscaping/gardening world since the mid-18th century (first recorded in its current usage in 1733)?
I can understand if her knowledge of modern human speech is distorted through the lens of which terms Kerry and less sheltered changelings bring home, but you'd think "lawn" would be commonly used by like...the gardeners at Shadowed Hills or something.
of course one could argue that her vocab ignorance is just an illusion and Titania's control isn't strong enough to enforce it more than sporadically...?

Welcome back to Caroline's ramblings corner, where I spew out thoughts and opinions, aka reading me nitpick and over analyze bullshit from whatever media I hyperfixate on at the moment lmao
Today we gonna nitpick Fortegreen from Rodamrix Among Us.
Tumblr media
Y'know, in both timelines, this is probably the closest thing we get to Fortegreen's origins.
But even then, is he telling the truth? Or is he just capping to make Red believe him? And if this IS the truth, is it possible that he was a different color before becoming the shapeshifter?
"Idk hes just the bad guy, enjoy the ride"
Yes, the bean is a menace to society and I love him for that, but... i kinda also wanna know more, if there were to be more.
I'd say something like "oh when he shows up in alternate again", but me personally i think thats unlikely. Cuz the guy is stuck on Polus. Him coming back would require A) the main characters to go back to Polus, or B) he needs to get off that rock on his own.
A might happen depending on what happens bext, although thats probably Season 3 material, and B idk how cuz all the ships are gone, how tf would he get off that snowy rock on his own??
Tumblr media
so I guess that be the last time we see hum, if my theories are right. Which is kind of a shame, tbh. Then again, I guess its better than bringing him back and then not have him do anything (yea I hate it when that happens).
And that concludes the post. Join me next time when I ramble about more bullshit, maybe not fanon content or some shit like that.

So, this is a real criticism for me rather than a nitpick. I genuinely don't like what they did with Shinobu's doorknob in the new anime. Do I think the additional dialogue with Inaba is cute? Of course, I like seeing more development of their relationship and seeing his kindness and understanding be shown.
But, I think there's a reason this future isn't brought up after the page I posted. It is easy as fans to want the status quo, to want nothing to ever change and for the characters to function as they always have, especially with a series as long as UY. For me, this page functions as Rumiko's direct challenge to that idea though. Yes, of course it is fun to see their antics and there's no doubt that Shinobu enjoys the time she spends with her friends. But Shinobu (as well as Ataru and Lum as we can see) want things to grow and blossom into something bigger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, maybe Shinobu flicking the doorknob away is showing us that. Now I almost want to rethink my whole thesis here. But I can't help but feel that as a nostalgic return to a more faithfully adapted old manga, the new adaptation decided to sort of have their cake and eat it too by praising the status quo despite the fact that the old manga didn't shy away with acknowledging how it has run its course.
Though, here's an actual nitpick for the road, Shinobu specifically did NOT have the same outfit as the spinster outfit she wore in one of the bad futures and instead wore something a little more youthful. This was a nice touch by Rumiko and I wish they kept that.

Writing the 80s and other decades
If you’re not as into the decade(s) or being close to accurate as I am, maybe this post isn’t for you but I’d still like to be heard out. I don’t think I’m too much of a nitpicker for being upset when a character from the 70s or 80s has a smart phone and watches Netflix on a flat screen, ok? In fandoms with a larger amount of younger fans that take place in the past (which can be as recent as the 80s our example for today) or was made 20-30+ years ago there’s a lot of people who outright refuse to learn about it or even make the effort to try. I’m not saying you have to write a thesis or dive into endless hours of research but I can guarantee you google searching a few key details will not kill you.
I’m also begging you to search a bit deeper- there’s more music than Guns n’roses, Madonna and Motley Crue.
Watch movies and shows made then! Besides finding good stuff to watch it’s also great to get a feel of the decade. What everyday items do people own? How do they dress? What/where do they eat? What’s some good slang? (The best for the 80s tends to be horror movies. There’s good glimpses of daily life before the plot itself kicks in)
Make sure you know the year it takes place in. So you know if what you’re referencing is possible/makes sense - why would a character from 82’ be talking about a movie that came out three years later? This is a nitpick on my end but it can make it very cheesy/noticeable. — and! Don’t just reference stuff I read a book that just said a string of things that existed then and it was … not good
Ask! I can guarantee if you weren’t alive then you have a family member who was, this goes for all of the recent decades. Ask about something specific, they might know.
Thrift!!! Single best advice I can get is thrift/antique, even if it’s not your hobby you can get a lot out of it. There’s old appliances, clothes, books, movies , furniture etc you may find something you hadn’t seen or heard of before! Incredibly helpful.
Check websites! One of my secret weapons is slang websites ran by people who were teens in the 70s/80s - little dictionaries of terms that were common then so I don’t risk modern phrasing.

I have read roughly 20,000 fanfics that cover David and Les's first day as newsies in detail, but have never seen them go back to get the afternoon or evening editions and have to talk to Weasel again. What's up with that?

Most of the side quests in Pikmin aren't "side" quests. "Get this many Pikmin"What I'm gonna do? Stop getting Pikmin? that's the whole game. It's like if Mario created a "side quest" where for every 100 coins you will be rewarded with a 1up.

Adding to my time period rambling
Here with more time period related stuff because there are people out there who want to do it and may not know a lot, also I think just having this stuff out there would delute the modernish fic stuff. 🤷‍♀️ again I’m nitpicky/it’s my personal thing to want to be in time period. You can ignore me,
Adding to the pretty/pretty boy thing. Long hair wasn’t always feminine! For the longest time it was actually a “manly”/ acceptable thing to grow out your hair. (Maybe a bit more in the 80s but) but it’s also subjective, not everyone was about it etc.
Same thing goes for Chokers!! A lot of rockstars of the era had them and it wasn’t nessisarily a more feminine thing (though those are rockstars were known to blur the lines a bit, Mick Jagger, Robert plant, Bowie etc).
Basically Baby faced , androgynous, long haired men were a thing and normal? Mostly. Like late 60s-80s. My point is Vance has these traits and don’t baby him for it? Idk.
Video arcades are in the making. They aren’t as big as the 80s yet, there’s few games and I’m 99% sure Pong still fascinates the boys. However 1978 space invaders baby!! (Point is Arcades wouldn’t be around and in all likelyhood they’d have a machine or two in a laundromat or something. Like the pinball being in a convenience store)
Kids are mean! They fight. They insult without the fear of authority now days . (At least at my schools no one would risk fighting etc from all the rules etc) I guess they were more lenient? As much as you can be when spanking/hitting students is a thing.
Wood grain. Wood grain everywhere. Dens, cars, phones, TV’s. If it can have wood as a accent it will. (Personally want to bring this back. It’s cozy)

So apparently Nintendo took down Yuzu (for now. It didn't work very well for them when they tried taking down Dolphin so we'll see how long it'll be down for) and people are calling them hypocrites for being anti-emulation while using emulation to sell some of their old games.
They're not anti-emulation, obviously. If they were they wouldn't use it for their own games all the time. They're anti-piracy. They're not being hypocrites for re-selling their old games that they own through emulation while also trying to take down emulators that allows people to pirate their games.
I know that this is a dumb nitpick that doesn't matter in comparison to the entire issue but it annoys me when people focuses on the misconception that Nintendo hates emulation more than the fact that they don't care about preservation.

I've seen some interesting headlines about "barbie forgetting her core audience" by some xian website with various rebuttals because the world is not just fundies of course.
Okay fine.
Now let's get a little nitpicky about the term Barbie's core audience.
Barbie's core audience should be we the consumer and since mattel opened it's own shop and amazon it started to be all consumers but to make a crude analogy, uptil very recently it's been more of an electoral college made up of supermarket and toy store buyers, a lot of whom have biases about what they want the Barbies sold at their stores to represent so can short pack the black barbies, have too low cleavage or too spooky a concept revised etc. In 2022 Laverne Cox Barbie was released at walmart, target and others. But the anti trans panic and the death threats over pride merch had not yet happened. I'm not as sure they'd have risked it this year, despite her popularity.
The 'electoral college' of Barbie may also be why we never got Barbie and Ken pack that weren't both the same race other than Lucy and Ricky as far as I can tell.
Please note: I'm not a longterm Barbie doll expert more of a Barbie, the company, observer: strategies and attempts at political neutrality in recent history.
So not only is core audience is a loaded term but Greta Gerwig managed to negotiate creative freedom for this project to make a film to appeal to *all* barbie audiences including those who don't buy barbie on principle (her family growing up where barbies came in as presents from others). So yes, Gerwig's deliberate choice was to NOT make a film for the core audience if by core audience you mean Barbie fans at large. So it's a stupid headline given the tagline 'for those who love or who hate barbie' and also doesn't know how small the core of 'super buyers' used to be.
The next Mattel merch films may be tailored for the consumers they want to appeal to only.

It feels very odd (and not in a complementary way) to me to refer to a human being as damaged goods. It feels like it goes beyond the realm of calling someone traumatized or damaged but it’s a phrase used very casually.

Nitpicking, Lily talking about Steven universe again?
for those who don’t know Lily Orchard made a video call Steven universe is garbage and here’s why. For myself, I would say it’s was probably OK but I had problems with it that I couldn’t help but keep thinking about until several videos and forms talking about why her video on Steven universe is actually kind of flaw going from not really knowing exactly how productions work to just really not really getting the LGBT themes of the show. but at the very end of all of this, I don’t really hate that. Lily made a video talking about Steven universe but apparently she really hates it when people are talking about her video and stating that it’s bad because of biases against her or just straight up making up stuff like the show creator being affiliated with World War II Germany. Yes, it interesting conversation to have. I most likely going talking about a small part of a much more bigger picture heck this small part might not even be finished or might even and will get more attach to it as time goes on but I feel that I want to talk about this mostly because it’s interesting and relatively speaking I didn’t really have a problem with Lily for almost nearly a month mostly until now she decide to talk about Steven universe and to be fair she did change it’s just at the changes kind of boring.
So, without any further, do let’s nitpick lily talking about pearl from Steven universe
Tumblr media
All right, we start things off of an analogy mind you I don’t think having a treadmill for character is overall a bad thing. you can argue that their story should end with them getting off of it, or trying to find a center of peace, then Lily says “man you know that one episode that you guys like and that song well I don’t like it. No not one bit you guys may like it and may have your exclamations about it but you know there’s this other episode that I like and you know it’s like a lot more deeper by like a lot and a lot more grounded and it doesn’t have all these lights and anime stuff all around it” and that’s where I feel like a boil down most of it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I’m gonna be honest here, reading all of this this is pretty meh really this comes across as “I don’t really like the flow of a Steven universe episode where they spend a little bit more time setting up the thing and then they immediately pay it off and I don’t like it did I say I don’t like it yeah I don’t like it” and in all honesty this criticism is the most meh thing I’ve ever read and it’s probably the main reason I’m probably not gonna read any more of Lily stuff because it’s just gonna be a boring massive mess meh. A lot of it is the exact same thing that she talked about in the video where she doesn’t like that one of the main aspects of pearl is that she talks about Rose a lot, but there’s so many other aspects to her character outside of that I’m genuinely bored and wondering what is the point of this hardly any of it is new it’s just the exact same thing but more.

The new anime I feel messed this one up by making the apartment not small enough. I mean, I get there's different needs for animation but look at how much walking space there is by comparison. Both the new anime and the manga fill the harem with both women we're familiar with and also some random ones. The OVA piled on the named characters, which I honestly think is better. Either way, the apartment needs to be smaller!
