My opinion on the story of Murders of Karlov Manor
XXXX With spoilers! You have been warned! XXXX
I was initially very sceptical when Murders of Karlov Manor was announced, but I wanted to give the story behind it a chance. (After „Phyrexia“ and „All will be one“, my bar was set very low). My secret hope was that the schemes of Tezzeret (FANBOY!) and Lazav hinted in Greg Weisman's "War of the Spark" book would finally be flourish. Plunging Ravnica into chaos. More Tezzeret (finally with his Darksteel Body).
I also found the first story interesting, didn't quite know what to make of Proft and was curious to see what would happen next. In general, a murder-mystery story is always a fine art. Do you manage to write it in such a way that the attentive reader ends up with the same keys as the detective? Or - as in many films - are there 15 minutes of scenes that are essential to solving the mystery? However, with each successive story, my enthusiasm was dampened and my eyebrow rose higher and higher.
When the murderer was finally caught, it was there again. The feeling of the Phyrexia/All will be one story-arc. I find it a great pity that it seems as if the simplest solution is always taken. The characters are sometimes not written consistently and the end of the respective arc leaves you unsatisfied. Somehow you can feel in the stories that perhaps there is simply a lack of love for the protagonists and that's why they act OOC. The author did a good job and wrote a great story, but if the briefing says that Trostani, or rather Oba, is the vengeful retribution, there's nothing you can do. For me personally, the revenge motif is simply too heavy-handed in this context. It seems as if they had thought about who is least expected to be the murderer. Then they tried to knit a motif around it. It all seemed so incredibly contrived to me and didn't feel natural in the course of the story.
What bothered me in general, however, were (unfortunately) many other aspects of the story in Ravnica. For one thing: Niv-Mizzet? It might have been nice to see/hear the living guild pact on this topic. Proft himself was a very unlikeable character to me. There's nothing wrong with creating a super intelligent Sherlock Holmes variation, but then it needs wit or a flaw. Proft unfortunately had neither and in the scene where he explains her job to Erata, I found it rather ridiculously over the top. What Krenko was doing in this whole scene - with all the guild leaders, I still wonder. Yes, he's a VIP in Ravnica. But to integrate him into the story because of that?
Another big aspect that I find very unfortunate are the open storylines. Teysa is/was a double agent? Judith is planning her own coup? The Simic are experimenting with glisterin oil? All great ideas, but unfortunately they were either nipped in the bud or, in the case of Proft, not pursued any further. Who was the intruder in his mind palace? Emarkul? Jace? A new party?
But despite everything I'm criticizing, I'd also like to highlight what I thought was good. As a big Kaya fan, I like the way the Planeswalker was portrayed. Her sassy demeanour, which often just serves as a protective shield. I also liked the way she was treated as a planeswalker in Ravnica. A story arc that I thought was great in the non-canon comics. The city/plane of Ravnica has a real problem with multiversal invaders and Kaya and Ral are met with distrust and anger. I think it just felt natural in the storyline. Ral Zarek only had a brief appearance, but he was electrifying. (Well? huh? You get it?.... Sorry…)
The author, Seanan McGuire, has also written a good story that beautifully depicts Ravnica, the guilds and everything that goes with it. There was also - especially at the beginning - a lot of excitement and joy when the new chapter was published.
Basically, I would have liked to have seen a few open story lines (Lazav and Tezzeret) picked up and no new ones opened up. Only to be quickly cut short again.
I would be interested to hear your opinion on this? Am I being too critical? What do you think about the murderer and her motive?

Hello Niv, this is Tulipsempai :> I hope you are doing well
I wanted to ask you something. I have 2 comics that has MT working in a fast food place (and one mention McDonalds) and i will be lying if I say that it wasn't inspired by your McDo!MT (which I love a lot hehe).
But i was wondering if it was okay for you that I make these comics. I can credit you of course, but if you wish to keep that concept to yourself, I don't mind not making them.
So: Can I use that concept in my comics? That's the question.
Have a good day ^-^/
of course you can use the concept! I'm really glad you like MCD!King :)

Gemstones Episode 1.8 Review: Kelvin's testicles, Jesse's butt, and ancient Philistine penises
Tumblr media
In the last episode, Scotty kidnapped Gideon and Jesse, forced them to open the church vault, and stole the Easter offering money, incidentally confessing that he had been in love with Gideon.  Judy and BJ had a breakup scene, but Kelvin and Keefe barely appeared.  In Episode 1.8,, their romance is centric.
An Old Man's Dick:  It's still Easter evening.  After dropping off Judy at her house, Baby Billy asks Tiffany "Who wants to suck an old man's dick?" She goes down on him while they are driving down dark country roads near the estate.  Suddenly Scotty, driving away with the money he stole, runs a stop sign and crashes into their car!   They are unharmed, but Scotty is near death (Tiffany finishes the job by accidentally shooting him).  Then they steal the money.  An interesting call-back here: earlier Scotty implies that he forced Gideon into oral sex, and he dies while interrupting consensual oral sex, an ironic punishment of the sort you would see in 1950s horror comics.
Top five young ministers:  Gideon admits to being Scotty's partner in the offering-theft plan, and is rejected by Eli and Amber.  But he doesn't mention his part in the blackmail plan!  We cut to Jesse telling his siblings that they are in the clear. But how do they know he won't tell later, and implicate them in the assault?   Worried that he'll be arrested, Kelvin is having anxiety attacks and "sharp shit pains in my stomach" (hemorrhoids?).   Even if he wasn't convicted, the scandal would destroy his career.   "I was in the Top Five Young Ministers to watch last year -- I got a reputation -- a following."  Wait -- if he's so famous, why is his whole plot arc about proving his worth?
Denim brings lunch:  We cut to scenes where Baby Billy and Tiffany leave town with the offering money, Eli worries that the whole enterprise is corrupt, and Jesse apologizes to Gideon for pushing him away and starting the whole mess. Eli admits, for the only time in the series, that the church's finances are not entirely above-board.
Next, Judy tries to mend her relationship with BJ by bringing him lunch at the optometrist office.  Whoops, his coworker Denim already picked up lunch.  "So you're having sex with BJ?"  No, she's a lesbian -- she has a wife.  This does not convince Judy, who calls her: "One of those benevolent lesbians, out to meet a hot guy, make friends with him, so you can sample-suck some clean dick."  BJ's nonchalance about LGBT people, plus Judy's sort-of nonchalance, will become important later.
He refuses to take Judy back, so she storms into the parking lot and starts destroying cars, finally getting arrested.
Hemorrhoids and Testicular Tumors: Keefe is swimming while Kelvin tries not to look at the body that is giving him so many unwelcome desires.   He wants to know how he can rid the world of darkness, when he's surrounded by it: his mother died, Eli was assaulted, the church was robbed.  He concludes that God is punishing the family for "not being who we say we are."  But Kelvin had nothing to do with those things. How does "not being who we say we are" apply to him?
"Don't you think God is being a little harsh?" Keefe asks.  We all wear masks; we hide things even from ourselves.
Kelvin laugh/cries and says "I think we're getting off easy...when the Philistines stole the Ark of the Covenant, God punished them with hemorhhoids and testicle tumors."
He's referring to an obscure story in 1 Samuel 4-5, where the Philistine thieves were punished with opalim. The King James Bible translates the Hebrew word as "emeroids" (now "hemorrhoids") and the NIV as "tumors."  An article in Biblical Archaeology Review points out the importance of penises in Philistine art, and suggests"flaccid penises."   No one mentions testicles; apparently Kelvin invented it, to correspond to the glimpse of Keefe's testicle that began his recognition of his homoerotic desire.
Next: "You should go, Keefe."  Keefe doesn't understand: "You want me to make a store run?"  Kelvin becomes angrier and angrier: "Go.  Leave.  Get out. I am no longer fit to lead you!"
Kelvin scratches his butt as he says this.  Apparently he has hemorrhoids, and thinks that God is punishing him -- an ironic punishment for having anal sex? Will testicular tumors come next?
Keefe disagrees: "There's no one more worthy than you."
"Get the fuck out of here! Now! Do I need to call security, motherfucker?"  This is shockingly aggressive.
Keefe wades away, holding his swimsuit like he held his shirt during the mushroom head scene.  The intimacy he enjoyed that night has been revoked.  Kelvin falls into the pool and screams and cries.
Why does Kelvin send Keefe away?  If he's no longer qualified to be a spiritual leader due to the assault of the blackmailers, they could certainly continue to live together.  It must have something to do with the "hemorrhoids and testicular tumors," the intimacy they shared, or even homoerotic desire itself.  Kelvin believes that it is evil, demonic, that Keefe is a serpent who tempted him.  I don't care much for this association between LGBT identities and sin, but the show has been careful to establish that it's in Kelvin's head, not a general theme, structurally or in-universe.
Jesse's Butt: Jesse invites his crew and their wives to "movie night," but the movie is actually the video of their sex-and-drugs party. He has decided to come clean: "These flawed men and myself have participated in some illicit, sinful activities."  Is this a callback to Kelvin's belief that he has participated in "illicit, sinful activities" with Keefe?
No one wants to see the video except Mandy, Chad's wife. Jesse advises that she might not want to because it features "Chad's gray testicle." Another testicle reference?  Is seeing that, like, the belly of the beast?   But they all go to the screening room, even Chad's underage kids (um...that's illegal).
As they watch, the wives storm out in anger and disgust. Amber starts throwing things at Jesse, yelling that he drove Gideon away and destroyed the family.  Then she grabs an assault rifle and shoots him (with buckshot) in the butt, a symbolic anal rape.
We cut to shots of Baby Billy and Tiffany rolling around in their loot,  Eli using his influence to get Judy out of jail, Keefe driving away crying, Scotty's van being dredged up, and Jesse yelling "She got me in my meat! She broke my butthole!" The background song is "Oh, Lord," by Geordi:
Oh Lord, what's wrong with me.  I can't seem to be what I wanna be
And it's not for the sake of tryin'
I tried so hard, God know, and felt like dyin'
And if you've been watchin',  you woulda seen me cryin'
So, O Lord, won't you give me your hand?
The siblings and their partners have broken up.  Gideon is gone.  This is the low point of their lives, and there's just one episode left for things to get better.
Next: Episode 1.9 Review: Jesse is racist, Judy is a rapist, and Kelvin is the Devil

Hello @odyssey-owl, @odysseymysteryhour, @aiorevelations, @livehorses, @harlowdoylepi and all of the Odyssey Fandom at large!!
I wanted to share a theory about the first arc of the webcomic Adventures in Odyssey has been releasing on their Club.
Tumblr media
Needless to say, spoilers for the Edwin and Jules arc of Odyssey’s comic…
In this arc, Zoe has written a musical inspired by the story of Jacob the Patriarch from the Book of Genesis in the Bible. For those who might not know, Jacob is the younger twin of Esau, who in that time, was destined to gain their father, Issac's, inheritance as the oldest son. When they were born, Jacob came out holding onto Esau's heel, the reason being that even in the womb, they were at odds with each other.
21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.
23 The Lord said to her,
“Two nations are in your womb,     and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other,     and the older will serve the younger.”
24 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. 25 The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau.[d] 26 After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob.[e] Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them. -- Genesis 25:21-26 (New International Version)
One day when Esau had come home from a long day out, he was so hungry, that Jacob managed to get him to exchange his inheritance for a cup of stew. No. I'm serious...
29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[f]) 31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”
32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?” 33 But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright. -- Genesis 25:29-34 (NIV)
Not too long after, Jacob complied with his Mother, Rebekah's, wishes and managed to trick Issac to give him an official blessing just before said father died.
5 Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country to hunt game and bring it back, 6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, 7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’ 8 Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you: 9 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it. 10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing before he dies.” Genesis 27:5-10 (NIV)
...
33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!” 34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me—me too, my father!”
35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing.” 36 Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob[a]? This is the second time he has taken advantage of me: He took my birthright, and now he’s taken my blessing!” Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?” Genesis 27:33-36 (NIV)
In the post Focus on the Family added today, August 8th, 2022, on the Club, Edwin tells Zoe's that he's read the story and has the understanding that he will be playing Jacob the titular character. The post ends with Zoe suggesting that this will not be the case...
Here's my theory:
Esau and Jacob were twin brothers who had issues between each other for several years. The younger twin ultimately used really unfair methods to get what he wanted (even though Rebekah came up with the idea of tricking Isaac, he still could've said 'no', for example). Who do we know from Adventures in Odyssey, who are twin brothers with an unhealthy relationship caused by a deceptive younger twin who does messed up things to the dissatisfied older twin?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OH YEAH, EDWIN AND REGIS BLACKGAARD!!
According to Genesis, Esau and Jacob (later named 'Israel') do eventually make up and forgive each other for all the problems from before, as seen here:
3 He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother. 4 But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept. -- Genesis 33:3-4 (NIV)
So here we have a two pairs of twins with troubling histories. One pair make up later down the line, and the other only had one interaction in the radio program's canon, Episode #329 'The Return,' in which Regis threatens Edwin with further misery if he doesn't help, to which Edwin begs him to let him go. In the Blackgaard Chronicles Book #4 'Rook's Ruse', we also learn that when Regis and Edwin were young, Regis pitched a fit over their Mother almost changing their last names to Barnett due to their Father being a Nazi from The Netherlands.
"...she gave the immigration officials her maiden name, Barnett. Eddie didn't seem to care, but Regis remembered pitching a perfect fit about it. For some reason, he didn't understand. He didn't want to be a Barnett." -- The Blackgaard Chronicles, Book 4 'Rook's Ruse', Page 7, Phil Lollar.
Eventually, she gives in and their last name goes from 'Blaguer' to 'Blackgaard'.
The point is, is that much like Jacob, many issues within the Blackgaard Family as it is today, came from the younger twin, Regis. And given that Zoe's musical is all about Jacob, what I ultimately theorize is that Edwin is going to be cast as Esau and find himself remembering the emotional trauma he went through as Regis's brother. I don't see Zoe-a responsible, Christian girl-changing Jacob's story from the Bible to appease a modern audience, so since Esau and Jacob's arcs will likely end with them forgiving each other, Edwin will probably think over his troubling relationship with Regis. True Regis is dead, and can no longer talk to Edwin about their problems, but that doesn't mean that Edwin still can't ask questions about it. And I theorize that those questions could potentially be something along the lines of:
"Am I ready to forgive my problematic twin?" "Why or why not?" "What does forgiving someone as monstrous as Regis actually look like?" "What if those negative feelings he gave me come back?"
At least, this is what I hope the comic does: dive into these tough questions and really think carefully about them (at least, this is what I'd do, if I were being commissioned to produce an Odyssey webcomic). FOTF has confirmed that Jules will also play a huge part in this arc and will likely form an acquaintanceship with Edwin over their mutual sibling experiences. So it wouldn't surprise me if this is how Jules learns about Regis Blackgaard and all the issues he put Whit's End through when he was alive

(This is old art from my instagram. Only posting it here now. You can find me on Instagram: @beautiful_02.08.18) The character here is named Serenity Harper from a Christian manga series named after her. It is made by Buzz Dixon. I only read through the 1st book online (that I realized too late that it might not be morally good) and so far its pretty average to me. However, it has an infamous reputation.
The art is like a mixture of manga, comics, and realism and it isn’t detailed. It has colors that doesn’t sit well with and the plot also needed help. It actually got a review from Stan Lee on the back cover and some old mixed reviews on Amazon. Atleast the main character isn’t the ‘positive character!’ trope, from what I’ve seen character-wise she’s the opposite of Pyuri-tan. The story does fall into the ‘lost person’s journey to Christ with the help of other Christians’ category, there’s nothing wrong with that but the execution here is pretty weird. In the 1st book the Prayer Club told Serenity that she will be their pet project. In the 2nd book it seems that one of the members of the Prayer Club blackmailed Serenity into joining so Serenity could escaped consequences for stealing money (which Serenity gave back.) There’s also this love drama between her and a member of the club who is in a relationship (‘for practical purposes its official’ according to him) with another member of the Prayer Club who is a pastor’s daughter (and she doesn’t want Serenity to take Derek.) There’s also NIV Bible verses at the end of the manga. It could have worked though it just isn’t well-executed for me. The manga has such an infamous reputation that I didn’t think its a good idea to place a Bible verse for this. For the illustration, I tried to emulate a 90s anime artstyle that I like for Serenity. I added a background here because my illustrations needed work. Overall I’m pretty happy about this. Today's Daily Encounter 13th October 2022
Kind Words
“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”1
In the busyness of our everyday routines, it is easy to become stressed out; so, when something truly difficult comes along, we can become anxious and at times, even depressed. I recently saw a comic strip that illustrated this perfectly:
Several businessmen were walking along with slumped shoulders and long faces—an obvious depiction of having the “weight of the world” upon them. But, amid all of this gloom, one man was hopping along, with his head held high. In the next frame there was a booth that read “Kind Words Here”; with a rather short line of men in front of it.
The irony in this cartoon was that all these men had walked by the free booth without bothering to stop, and so they continued their way, downhearted and depressed.
This is, too often, a real scenario; sometimes we need a kind word and other times we can work the “kind words” booth and help lift others up. Unfortunately, when we feel down, kind words are not readily available. Likewise, when we can use kind words, we hold them back.
The kindest word to cheer up an anxious person can be found in Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” God’s Word is the true source of peace, and prayer is the truest way to deal with a problem. If you are anxious, consider this a kind word to you. If you know someone who is anxious, be a source of encouragement to get them through their day and you will do much good in the name of Jesus.
If you need a kind word, then I will say to you, “You can do this!”, “You’ve got this!”, “It’s gonna be OK!”, and “I’m praying for you today!”
Suggested Prayer: Dear Lord, I bring my anxiety to you today and ask that you provide me with a peace that will surpass my understanding. Allow me to be an encouragement to someone and that my words will direct them to you and your unending love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Proverbs 12:25 (NIV).
