木斛[Mokkoku] Ternstroemia gymnanthera

An evergreen tree. It grows over ten meters tall and has a stately appearance, and produces tiny four-petaled flowers in summer and red fruits in autumn. The leaves are fleshy, glossy, and beautiful.

It is one of 三大庭木[San-dai niwaki], the three major garden trees, and also one of 江戸五木[Edo go-boku], the five garden trees that were emphasized in the Edo period(1603-1868.) If asked what is the king of the garden trees, some would say it is 松[Matsu](Pine tree), and some would say it is this one. It is easy to care for, yet on the other hand, it is said to require a high level of skill to prune it beautifully.
