#no ethical consumption under capitalism
Text
I do actually think that people should learn what "no ethical consumption under capitalism" really means before they just thoughtlessly repeat it whenever they don't want to even think about the harm caused by some item's production.
Like look it up!! Pick a random product that's a staple of your life and find out who is exploited and what environmental harm is done by its sourcing and processing and distribution. Find out the real, human and environmental cost of something that feels necessary to you.
Then look up the alternatives. Try to find a version that doesn't harm people or the environment. Struggle with the way corporations work hard to keep these harms secret and realize most of what we actually know is only public because activist groups raised the alarm.
Pick another item. And another. Let it really, really sink in what it means that you cannot live under capitalism without being complicit in harm. That "no ethical consumption" is not just a catchphrase to get out of caring.
And now think about how you could contribute, in however small a way, to protecting the people and environments that get destroyed for the products you rely on.

So we all know that that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and to a certain extent, we have to acknowledge that our way of life is dependent on the suffering of others. Fortunately, it seems there are people who are pushing against that. If you're in the market for a new phone, I urge you to check out the Fairphone 4. It's made using ethically sourced materials and designed to be modular, so you can make repairs at home- which means if you crack your screen, or the battery stops working, you don't have to buy a whole new phone. I know the world is becoming more and more aware of the horrific conditions being suffered by people in places like DRC to make our smart devices. You can use your buying power to make a change.
I am personally not in the market for a new phone just yet, but if you are looking to get a new phone, I encourage you to look into ethically sourced phones and other tech. If you already have a Fairphone, please reblog this and talk about your experience. Be honest. Give the pros and cons so people can make informed decisions. We can't immediately stop all of the horrors that capitalism has brought on the world, but we have the power to make smaller choices where we can to mitigate the harm done.
Fairphone's main company seems to operate in Europe (website here), but if you are looking to buy in the US and Canada, check out their partner site, Murena (website here).

Original Post
Revision:
The Eclipse is so politically rebellious and queer that I understand why they would totally reject any and all materialistic funding from the capitalistic overlords who would only have forced the content of the show to be watered down and/or stripped bare so as to appease the advertising executives trying to shill sugar teas and collagen pills.

batmanisagatewaydrug: "If you're still enjoying Harry Potter you should be used as a bowling pin"
This from one of my favourite fandom blogs. I am so tired of losing all respect for people I like and look up to. I guess one of the upsides of this stupid discourse is the amount of so-called leftists showing exactly what their ethics and principles are worth.
Either you believe that hyperfixations, special interests and escapism in general are value neutral or accept that you're an ableist thought policing dickbag willing to make acceptable targets of vulnerable people for the crimes of the rich and powerful.
There are no exceptions. None. Unless you believe Global South people whose entire countries are being destroyed by brands like Nestle matter less than Global North trans people. If you're not going after people who drink Coca Cola you can shut the fuck up about Harry Potter fans who aren't even giving JKR any money.

Btw just because there's no ethical consumption under capitalism doesn't mean that u have to go for the most evil option every time.
I'm like "hey what's a slightly less evil alternative to [xyz]?"
And I get "oh it's all evil!!"
And I'm like "yeah but these ones are active terrorists-"

temu uses slave labor
Thanks for the link, I had looked around for info when I first saw them, but didn't find anything definitive then.
I hate how hard it is to be poor and shop ethically. It's stupid.

I want to be a sneaker person but how do I do that when theres no ethical consumption under capitalism? Nike will be like heres shoes we paid someone $.70 to make for $170.00. I just want the ugliest shoes possible with the most garish colors and I don’t want to support slavery and spend half the money in my bank to do it

Hierarchy is cruel
It is exploit and be exploited
We ourselves are being used up
Denied access to the resources of our planet
So that we may be desperate enough to exploit others
Conscious consumption is a lie.
You cannot afford the $200 garment made by ethically hand,
You must buy the $20 piece, made by those who are exploited even further, by the same people at the top
because you need to wear something or you cannot go to work, you cannot go acquire food
It is not your fault and yet it feels like a failure, because after all, there are those who can afford to travel, and own expensive cars. They did it, so why can't you?
So we feel our exploitation, and feel shame at how we are forced to exploit others.
I do not blame those who are above me on the heirarchy, because I have no choice but to do the same. Humans who live hundreds of miles away make the things that I must buy, and they are suffering to do so.
We are all under the same boot and those at the top have constructed a system that forces us to indirectly or directly abuse each other.

It should not be 5X cheaper to buy a replacement for an entire item than just a replacement part for an item.

The problem isn’t that the animals have been bred into existence, purely to have their short life ended violently, just because I enjoy 5 minutes of sensory pleasure, the problem is vegans and **their** chocolate and vegetables and capitalism!!!1!
Now shut up, I am eating my chicken nuggies xxDDD

I know that there is "no ethical consumption under captialism" and therefpre there is no ethical production so you shouldnt bash the average employee of mc donalds who is flipping burgers for a living despite how shitty mc donalds as a company is for example and thats cool and fine. But there is a difference between your average wallmark clerk/mc donalds burger flipper to someone who is actively working producing stuff that is directly harmful/intended to cause harm, like I can still sympathize with a scientist or engineer or whatever that is making a neutral techonlogical advance that can be aoplied to our daily lifes in positive ways but sadly can be used to war and other horrendous shit (like internet, satelites and to some extent vehicles in general), but I dont shed a single shed of sympathy for people directly making actual fucking war machines and weapons. "Oh booohoo im an engineer working at a big company gaining immensely more than the average worker in my country but I make weapons and that make me sad : (" JUST FUCKING LEAVE DUDE WTF unless you are sabotaging the shit you are making or gatherring evidence ah la corporate espionage to fuck this company just leave dude, go work at somewhere else even if it pays worse if thats agaisnt your moral code jesus
