Something about Hua Cheng's expression here is killing me--I know this is supposed to be a delicate moment of reassurance but the pure hater energy radiating off of him is just immaculate
#tgcf#hua cheng#xie lian#hualian#words cannot express how much I love hua cheng being a hater#hua cheng in this pic is that energy when you keep spamming the A button when an npc you don't like won't stop talking#like his face when lang qianqiu keeps going on and on about his parents meeting an untimely unjust and grisly end#is so 'it was hundreds of years ago and it wasn't even gege's fault for fucks sake grow up'#'leave my goddamn wife alone he raised you with love and diligence'#'you had your bloody revenge what more do you want. figure it out far away from us.'#spoken like a true ghost king who slaps eming every single time it expresses a single inconvenient emotion he has#every day i have to resist the urge to gush about hc he's just hilarious and peak every single time i love him#no notes just banger after banger after banger#that's the face of a man who was orphaned as a child and clawed his way through life to survive and keep his loved one alive + well#a bastion of unmoving strength for 800 years#unmoved by the whining of a young man born with everything and mourning the loss of his innocence way past his expiration date#10/10 hua cheng you've done it again#hc said 'oh? a traumatic life event? we have several dozens of those git gud'#and honestly i mean that with no malice i just feel like lang qianqiu is old enough to start parsing the world in a more nuanced way ;;;;;#as much as xl thought lying to him was the best outcome hc was right--the truth d o e s matter--and not just to absolve xl#its also about giving lang qianqiu closure and moving on. about qi rong facing the consequences of his actions#so much of what is wrong with the heavenly court is the obsession with maintaining appearances over being sincere#and so much of what hc adores about xl is that xl was never really interested in those empty words and empty sentiments#he truly wanted people to prosper and live well no matter the cost to himself

mxtx really introduced her protagonist like “here is a prince in a play wearing a mask that obscures his face to the common people but he nonetheless wants to save the common people. he’s 17 and he’s dressed like the heavenly emperor and he takes the initiative to leap from a building to imitate a god descending to the mortal realm. everyone is delighted by this. he’s dressed as a god in a play and he’s fighting a demon who is also one of his best friends and he believes in good conquering evil but he also believes he is playing a part so he is smiling throughout the whole dance. he’s 17 and he’s already a god even before he ascends. he’s so confident in his righteousness that he deviates from the path the play is taking to save a falling child and this is the only time his mask falls off, but he’s still dressed as a god so the common people cheer for it. now watch how far he can fall while still wearing that costume” and then expected me to be at all normal about it

Glancing at the Qian Jin-Xiao Li duo then at the Lu Guang-Cheng Xiaoshi one and realising that from what we know Qian Jin was originally the by-the-book type and even now is incredibly careful and thorough. Meanwhile, Xiao Li went along with the photo shop trio despite knowing how unbelievable it all seemed and was willing to arrange Lu Guang's safety in a less traditional way
Qian Jin especially in the past is much more aligned with Lu Guang personality-wise whilst the more flexible and intuition-based Xiao Li is more aligned with Cheng Xiaoshi

You know what I would like? Steph and Jason on patrol and her stopping him from killing someone and then after patrol they go get dinner from some fast food place and eat it at his gargoyle. They start talking and it gets to his Bruce didn’t care enough about me speech and she tells him they’re going to go on patrol together tomorrow night as well. She shows up in her now too small Robin get up and he just looks confused cause that has to be uncomfortable.
He asks her why she’s wearing that and she says he’s asking the wrong question. He asks what he should ask. She simply says, “How do you still have that?” He looks at her confused and then realizes. She just smiles as she starts to change into her Spoiler outfit, “Yours was kept, mine wasn’t even a thought to keep.”

I just watched s2 episode 10 in the english dub and I have to say. Nothing could have prepared me for Howard's delivery of that final scene where Xie Lian gets worked up about the truth coming out.
The just...sincerely agonized delivery of "That my words were the empty ramblings of a sad child!!" shook me to the core. The absolute self-loathing in that line, the raw emotion. The way concealing the truth was done to spare Lang Qianqiu but also at its heart was about Xie Lian's unresolved feelings of humiliation and shame, the way [redacted] did everything in his power to make Xie Lian lose faith in himself and the possibility of good prevailing in the world.
The way TGCF keeps me up at night, man...
#tgcf#xie lian#lang qianqiu#the runner-up line that devastated me too was: 'it's the least of what I DESERVE!!!'#i dont think there are words to describe how that made hua cheng feel knowing all that he does (from his time as wu ming)#legitimately its on the spectrum of mantis shrimp im guessing bc i can't fathom trying to put it into words either#the way xie lian won't stop punishing himself for wishing for better--for wishing for peace and collaboration--even 800 years later#the way he continues to take responsibility for all the wrongs others commit--the way he deems himself a failure ->#for things he simply could not change or did not purposefully incite. the way he won't stop punishing himself when things go wrong#i honestly cant get over how acutely xl feels like the result of gifted child syndrome#having all of these grandiose expectations placed on him and doing his utmost to uphold them at any cost#doing everything he can to the point of self-destruction to do the right thing#only to end up hated in the end when he proved to have limits--even as a god#and discarded despite his efforts; ultimately deemed worthless for not measuring up to what were impossible/rigged standards from the get g#and like . the way up to this point they made the creative decision to make xie lian's emotional range fairly static#not that he's unfeeling but that he doesn't tend to raise his voice or express anything extreme (for good reason)#until this precise moment where it all comes flying apart with so many old scars torn open#absolutely fantastic im on the ground#honestly i feel like i forget how difficult a decision this had to be for hua cheng#i mean naturally he chose this because he wanted xie lian absolved#and ultimately xie lian really does need to stop the self-flagellation--he takes it too far#but watching him tremble with fear haunted by the echoes of what he almost became#fucking cHRIST

Thinking about "the rhythm of the interrogation" again.
When Cheng Xiaoshi goes in to interrogate "Li Tianxi" Xiao Li reminds him that he who controls the rhythm controls the initiative. Cheng Xiaoshi needs to be the one controlling what's going on and only then can he obtain the information they need.
And if you look at what Li Tianchen does here? He's following Xiao Li's tips to a tee. I would not be surprised if Qian Jin gave him the same advice as Xiao Li at some point tbh.
Li Tianchen's whole plan here has multiple layers. First, to Qian Jin, he's setting the police looking for Tianxi and grabbing Cheng Xiaoshi at the same time. But he also goes in there with his own agenda, trying to figure out if Cheng Xiaoshi has been able to do anything with the photo he's provided. This is the information he himself wants to obtain.
So! First thing. The "informant" went to the police themselves, offering information on the old case. They dance around the topic such that the police begin to get frustrated then offer to talk, if, and only if, there are a number of conditions agreed. The police have very little information on the case as Qian Jin ensured the files were modified which just adds to the their desperation here. So they give in. Or at least they pretend to and bug Cheng Xiaoshi. Tianchen keeps even his pretend identity ambiguous at this point. He's set the conditions of the discussion before it even begins and nets himself the home turf advantage.
Cheng Xiaoshi enters, introduces himself and asks for the informant's name. This is his attempt at controlling the conversation by dictating the questions. Unfortunately, Tianchen immediately undermines this by introducing himself as "Li Tianxi". Cheng Xiaoshi's reaction is telling and he is pushed onto the back foot.
Li Tianchen now in control of the conversation offers a handshake. Cheng Xiaoshi reaches to return it but, before he can, Tianchen switches tracks again, keeping CXS off-kilter, and asks him to hand over anything hidden on his person. Tianchen could so easily puppet CXS now, but he refuses. A puppeted Cheng Xiasho can't provide anything but puppeted words and that's not what LTC wants here. Besides, he can win his possession fair and square.
Cheng Xiaoshi offers up his phone and says that's all he has. Tianchen is doubtful and "searches" Cheng Xiaoshi. Honestly, with his touch possession power, I don't think he even really cares about potential bugs at this point? It's purely to keep Cheng Xiaoshi off guard. LTC hovers over the collar, an obvious place to put a bug... and then he pulls back. Actually *finding* a bug at this stage would derail the conversation.
Tianchen then says how the "foundation of cooperation is mutual trust" and that he "hopes they'll have a better start this time". If Cheng Xiaoshi were anything but relieved at the bug not being found he would have picked up on "Li Tianxi" being the possessor at this point and been thrown off his rhythm yet again. Alas, he entirely misses it. This actually helps CXS recover his pace a bit and when he steps back into the room he's back into questioning mode, ready to take control. Tianchen has another go at making CXS realise he's talking to the "possessor" and this time succeeds. Advantage returns to Tianchen.
And now he can start to dig at what he actually wants to ask about and confirm his suspicions. He asks how CXS knew "her" name and why he had no need to ask "her" background. CXS valiantly tries to rally, but the knowledge that he's speaking to the possessor forces him to be cautious and give an honest answer. Also, Tianchen asking why he was taking so long to answer pressures him to answer quickly rather than trying to think it through any further. CXS reveals that he learnt Tianxi's past through a photo. Tianchen's gotten his answer so it's time to make his escape.
Tianchen asks for a Coke. Forcing Cheng Xiaoshi to cater to his whims one last time whilst also giving him as excuse to "go to the bathroom" later on.
Finally, the sob story. I won't make any comment to how "true" any of it is, but it does its job here. Cheng Xiaoshi offers his sympathy by reaching out to "Tianxi".
Checkmate.

#art#ocs#oc art#watercolour#traditional art#bibi#rosie#this is canson montval watercolour paper#not cotton i think its all cellulose#but still a different experience than canson xl mixed media paper (what 99% of my art is lol)#also a different experience than canson xl watercolour paper (the bane of my existence. why does the mixed media paper buckle less than it)#i have some fully cotton paper but ive been too scared to do anything but a tiny swatch sheet hkjfdjfsdksfsd i'll get there#its scary and im scared but i'll get there!!!#anyway back to canson montval. not half bad! i can layer somewhat easily and it doesnt buckle at all even with washes#struggles with some of my very heavy layering but i may have not let it dry enough rip#thats one thing about actual watercolour paper vs mixed media paper#mixed media paper dries FAST as FUCK#with watercolour paper (even a cellulose one like this) it takes MUCH longer for a layer to fully cure before you can go over it#this has some benefits like i can draw MUCH bigger which is very fun#and you can lift paint much easier (means nothing to me personally because i basically never do lifting techniques)#(and i just kinda accept my mistakes LOL)#and the lack of buckling is a HUGE plus (my mixed media sketchbooks are wrinkly little guys : ) )#but if u love to layer and are also impatient like me you NEED a heatgun/hair dryer hfjskdhjdfsd#very fun though im having fun!!!!! experimenting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#oc group: mbfial
