Mmm. I’m much less upset about this development since realizing that it’s straight-up a disability narrative in fantasy clothing. But... through that lens, the way the characters seem to be making progress in their attempt to find a way to break the curse, and particularly the implications that if they succeed people could be able to opt out of this disability, are less great.

(From what I’ve been able to piece together about when and in what cultural context this was written, it’s entirely likely the question “am I being ableist” had never crossed the author’s mind. And they clearly put a lot of thought, probably over several years, into how people would be affected by and deal with this disability.)
