Audio Drama Sunday - 23rd July ✨

This week has been such an amazing week of listening! I’ve found three new shows that I absolutely adore and I can’t wait to tell you all about them ✨

🌲@hellofromthehallowoods (126) FIRST OF ALL 🚗🚗🚗 BEEP BEEP GET IN LOSER, WE’RE GOING TO GET MOTH 🚗🚗🚗 So glad to hear from you again, Ray!! This line: “the devil’s a better man than I am” had my eyebrows disappearing into my hairline and that’s all I’m going to say at this time. It’s always a risk listening in public, because the scene on the beach made me want to cry a little. I hope in my heart that they’re all going to make it out of there but I have no idea how right now! 

📻 @monstrousagonies (106) the first letter this week made me laugh so much! I was fully expecting the ‘moocher’ to be a brownie or someone like that, so it was a fun surprise to hear of a demonic midnight snacker! I may have to use that excuse when my baked goods don’t turn out so baked or good . . .  

🎞  Tiny Terrors (021) What a welcome VA jumpscare from Mx Wellman!! I loved the story (I, too, would feed the mega-toad to make it happy) but the surrounding footage was really creepy... I sure hope the gang goes to investigate the Riverside Institute. What’s the worst that could happen?? 👀

🌍 OOH the most recent episode of @lastechoespod was genuinely empowering! The political pressure the Archivist is under seems to have ramped up this ep, and reading @skyfullofpods’s thoughts on it last week makes me want to listen to it all again with fresh ears! 

🧛‍♂️ @re-dracula What a great week! Alasdair Stuart nails it as the Captain of the Demeter. His voice in the first ep is the calm surface of the sea, hiding the teeming mass of life and death below. The Renfield arc honestly unsettles me so much, but I, too, would love a kitten if there’s one going spare … 

🧬 Regina Prime (ep 4) The revelations!! I loved the sound design of the getting ready montage in this ep but I loved the lore drop even more! 300 clones?! And cloning is something that’s happening commercially? Damn. The last line actually made me grin, Epsilon is quick-witted and brave (or stupid!) and I like her a lot. Every episode I get more enthralled by this show and everyone needs to be listening! 

 💫 Wolf 359 (20-22) Hot damn. The tension aboard the Hephaestus is something else… the paranoia is written so well, you’re listening with your most suspicious face trying to unpick it and getting nowhere. I love how I have no idea where this is going but I know the ride is going to be BUMPY. 

🎩 I started @ethicstownpod this week and it deserves ALL the hype. The show uses a well-loved audio drama trope to bring us a very interesting new story. The writing and voice acting are spot on from the get-go, and the sound design choices feel fresh despite the radio format. Most podcasts make me feel, but this one makes me think as well! I really love it!! I’ve been following the development of the show on Tumblr for a while and I remember the creator being so excited about January’s VA and yeah, I totally get it. Amazing. Hard to believe the role wasn’t written for him. 

SPOILERS: I love how the main ethical issues are presented while January currently seems oblivious to the ethical quandary of keeping important information from someone and who has the right to make that decision . . . ALSO Artemis and Grace are very close in age . . . imagine if they became friends . . . and then Artemis found out . . . . HOO BOY. 

🥾@doyoucopypod The first two episodes are very promising! In the first ep, the pod-within-a-pod recording leads to some fun & cheesy dialogue which contrasts well with the jaded but wary interludes from [REDACTED]. I love a spooky woodland mystery and I’m really hoping for a Blair Witch style descent into terrifying found-footage chaos! The second episode really tugged on the old heart strings. I need a Does The Dog Die for this show bc I’ve had Wilson for 8 minutes but if anything happened to him I’d make that Dead Zone REALLY much more dead-er. 

🏴‍☠️ @levianpod This show has dropped its anchor right into my heart!!! DAMN. I’ve listened twice this week. I can’t recall the last time I was so immediately ALL-IN for an audio drama. I mean, firstly, that cover art is GORGEOUS. I genuinely think this show has it all, there’s LORE, there’s spiciness, there are sea captains who are also sea monsters (a GIFT for the wlw, thank you 🙏), there’s a teenage romance gone WRONG. Then there’s the voice acting!! Incredible performances right out of the gate. It’s safe to say that I am OBSESSED. Why are you still here? Go fucking listen to Levian. 

🎧 In the most recent ep of The First Episode Of, W Keith Tims talks to Packhowl - a creator I greatly admire. I love these interviews! It’s so fascinating to hear how other creators came to audio drama and it’s shed some of the brilliant The Madness of Chartrulean in new light for me. I miss grumpy space Jesus.

May I humbly ask about your animatic-making process?

i got you

1. Find an idea

I usually get my ideas from tiktoks or some songs.

I kinda try to fit the song to the character I want in it lmao

2. Download the audio

I’m an android phone user so downloading stuff is really easily.

I usually use YTMP3.com to download my stuff

there is a lot of websites with that link but l usually pick the second or first one

Then insert the audio in Alight Motion. I use Alight Motion a lot since there’s a lot of choices there.

Also I use the APK version so I don’t have to pay for premium features. ALSO THIS IS ON MY PHONE. I use an Ipad to draw….

3. (Optional) Storyboarding

GUYS TBH IN MY ANIMATICS I DON’T STORYBOARD

EVERYTHING IN MY ANIMATICS, I LITERALLY JUST WING IT LMAOOO

The only animatic I did need to storyboard was Floyd’s little minecraft song angst video LMAOOO:

a lot of people happen to storyboard their animatics so they have a plan but i literally storyboard in my head and if i think it looks good, i just put it in 😭😭😭

I literally have to go on my old tablet to fetch some of my old content here

4. START DRAWING

In my drawing process, it’s kinda easy unless I’m using a bunch of colors.

I also try to change the styles up so you can differeniate the animatics from eachother like how in Jade’s Laufey video, the colors are warm and soon turn pale and cold. And in the To Love a Boy, it’s like pt 2 of Jade’s Laufey video but in MC’s perspective and in which the MC does not return his feelings so the colors aren’t warm as Jade’s perspective.

And then in Azul’s Laufey video, the appearance and color palette’s looks very sweet and valentiney since it’s in the MC’s perspective on having a FAT FUCKING CRUSH on Azul

Epel was the hardest because during that time, I was not that active on TikTok and school took my time so it took a lot of time to gain back the motivation and finish it

ALSO, i literally draw on my Ipad now and I send the pictures to my phone to edit them so it’s an annoying process since I DON’T WANNA PAY FOR ALIGHT MOTION WHEN I CAN GET IT FOR FREE

BUT YOU KNOW WHAT TOOK ME A YEAR?? My “I Wanna Be a Princess!” MUSIC VIDEO… it’s not animatic but that took like a year to finish because I forgot about it but I did so well on it.

AND YOU CAN TELL HOW LONG IT TOOK BECAUSE THE MC APPEARANCE ALREADY CHANGED

5. Editing

Okay, I’m so happy that I actually got into editing for a bit because my videos would’ve looked so trash bro

LMSOOO but editing animatics aren’t really that hard unless you’re going for a specific transition or movement

I guess the transition that pissed me off the most were the ones in Jade’s Laufey video when it switches from warm to cold and Epel’s MLP video where it switches from silly to dark.

My editing process isn’t that unique. I just insert the song, move the pictures, and done 😭😭😭

6. Touch-ups

Touch-ups include subtitles, effects, filters, etc

I don’t really use filters for my animatics unless i’m going for something

BUT SUBTITLES?? yeah I use them a lot lmao

But also trying to fit the subtitles with the animatic is hard bc IDK WHAT TO GO FOR so i literally pull them out my ass

7. Post

I don’t do much about posting or what to say with my animatics

saw this and automatically thought that its the type content megumi would make with baby rin 😭😭😭

LMFAOOOO NO BC FR ! AND HE WOULD HAVE NO SHAME IN IT.

megumi would post him and rin so often on his tiktok. it would never be to get followers or clout. he simply recorded the cute moments they would have together or vids like the one above, poking fun at how he successfully avoided becoming a teenage parent, just to end up as a brother to a sister 19 years younger than him. the vids would range from vlogs, to comedy vids, or “make my sister’s ____ with me”. regardless, rin made up 75% of megumi’s content on tiktok, and it was solely because he enjoyed spending as much time with her as he can.

he would record himself when he’d be babysitting her. days like today, where you handed him rin just as he got settled in from school, complaining about him taking her because she was fussing for her brother all day. he ended up taking her to the park where he sat on the swing with her. she was in her carrier strapped to his torso, so he was safe to swing ever so softly with his baby sister cooing and clapping with joy at the movement. he would record her and in the background you could hear him squeal “weeee” everytime he pushed himself forward, earning ecstatic giggles from rin. AND THEN JUST OUTTA NOWHERE, an older woman with kids would approach with a smile. “what an adorable baby. and she has her daddy’s eyes. what a cutie!” she would gawk at both rin and megumi’s features, complimenting the young man on how beautiful his daughter he has. and megumi would just dead pan ( 😑 ) to the camera like those ‘staring at the imaginary camera’ vids. he edits subtitles on the video with the barbie girl audio saying “is this bitch actually forreal?” but he doesn’t actually say that. no, instead megumi mumbles a tight lipped “thanks” to the woman before he gets up and just leaves the park all together 😭😭. he stopped correcting people after the fifth time. now he’ll literally just walk away. “if i got a dollar for every time someone thought i was your dad, i could pay for your college tuition, rinny baby.” he said to his sister as he recorded the two of them. rin just stared into the camera, sucking away on the hand in her mouth.

BONUS:

you would have absolutely NO IDEA. that he has this account. you were never really a social media person, so you would only watch the tiktoks megumi would send you through imsg. you didn’t know about his 254k fans, let alone your almost one year old daughter’s! you find out when you receive a text from toji one day while you were at work. a text following after saying “you gotta dress rin as simba for halloween now”

and the video is of megumi, reenacting simba’s coronation from the lion king. him as rafiki and your baby girl with your red lipstick smeared across her forehead, wrapped in your multi patterned hair scarf fashioned as a dress, as simba. and you were both amused, shocked, and pissed megumi would do your baby like this.

𝐀/𝐍: Okay, so I’ve got the Yandere themes from @saltymongoose head cannons here and here. (Look salty, I would submit this to you but I have no idea how submissions work) Of course, reader isn’t a Player! But a Doctor! I put my own twist to it so it will match the story line. Yeah it gonna be a little bit more… violent than wholesome. Also you don’t understand the amount of research I had to do to perfect this 😭 watching a documentary of inside a psychiatric hospital and read a handful of articles. Also after watching season 4 of Stranger Things I kinda grew an interest on asylum AU’s - I’ll give you a small spoiler for this fic quoted from the show ‘what have you done?’😟 (also want to thank @deimosed for those sweet words from my last Hank fic)

𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: After working your way up your career ladder, you’re excited to be offered a place in Nevada’s notorious psychiatric hospital as a full time psychiatrist. This is a massive opportunity for your career. But things aren’t so glamorous and rewarding as it seems when you start to discover the inside works of the hospital with their dark and twisted system to ensure everyone, especially the employees, abides by their extensive rules and policies. You start to learn that the hospital's high reputation may not be so organic. Meanwhile, you develop a secret admirer amongst one of your patients who will do anything to be alone with you and to have you for himself (and maybe save you) - even if it means breaking a few rules.

USE HEADPHONES FOR THE AUDIO.

I’d let these people bleed out if you told me you liked the colour red.

The janitors must’ve used some strong cleaning products again. Waking up to the bitter-sweet smell of disinfectant is not really the ideal way to start your morning. After a few inhales, it starts to get into your head and makes you nauseous. It’s not a scent that you would call ‘homely’.

Fortunately, it does fade as the day goes by but the pungent smell of old piss quickly replaces it by late afternoon and then the vicious cycle starts again in the morning. The sickeningly sweet smell really reflects the cryptic ambiance of the building.

But for patients like Hank, who has stayed in the hospital for a while, the stench doesn’t bother him. It does start to grow in you to the point where you forget what fresh clean air smells like.

Hank takes another glance at the clock for the umpteenth time in the last couple of hours. It was coming up to that time. He can feel his heart accelerating as the seconds pass by. Since he’s all ready, he can sit and watch in front of the clock until finally hearing those footsteps echo in the hall, getting louder as they step closer. Two nurses reach his room, both in their scrubs and ready to escort him out.

“The doctor wants to see you Hank, let’s get going,” the taller of the two says.

They both lead him to another room. This isn’t anything new to Hank. Having to go to the checkup rooms regularly to see the doctor was part of the routine. More footsteps could be heard and immediately he knew it was you. He has your footfall rhythm memorised. Even outside the checkup sessions, he can easily recognise you walking from a distance away. He watches as you make your way in - a warmth reflecting from your eyes with a smile.

“Nice seeing you early today Hank, did you sleep well?” Your voice is amplified over everyone else’s; it’s sweet, hypnotic and endearing to the ears.

All of his senses heighten as soon as you’re near (or as he watches you from afar). As you step closer towards the seat opposite him, he catches the familiar soapy aloe vera scent from you. It’s refreshing and it's definitely more pleasant than the sterile smell of the hospital. Whenever his session ends, he feels like he can still just capture the scent lingering a while longer the minute you leave the room. You’re just so fascinating with how you approach things and how you approach him.

You start to write on your clipboard the date and his name. Hanks eyes are stuck staring at your hand holding the pen. He secretly wishes that you would accidentally misplace or leave your pen one day in the room before you go to your next patient so he could keep it for himself - something that you touched and held onto everyday and probably has your sweat and fibre on it. But unfortunately, due to previous cases of patients using pens as weapons and poking peoples eyes out, doctors and anyone else using a pen has to make sure they keep them safe with them.

“Your mood has definitely improved in the last few weeks Hank, I’m pleased to see that,” your praise causes a wave of euphoria to surge through him. He wants all of your praises. All of the sweet words that come out of your lips. He knows he wants you for himself and wishes the nurses weren’t in the room with the two of you so he can be all alone with you.

The check up comes to an end and you finish it off with “I’ll see you next week Hank,” before you leave to go off to your next patient while he stays in the room with the two nurses beside him a little while longer. It’s easy to forget that he’s not the only one you’re caring for especially with how he’s so engrossed in the moment.

But the thought of you looking after other people besides him, giving them your attention and your time to them doesn’t sit right with him. Actually it enrages him. They don’t deserve you. You need someone who you can feel safer with. These people don’t have the facilities for that. The more he thinks about it, the harder his fist clenched to the point where the knuckles were turning white. Fortunately, he’s able to keep this heated anger in control quickly since he’s still on the fucking medication that slowing his brain .

But Hank is not going to allow their luck to run any longer with you…

Working in a mental hospital isn’t something that you nor your colleagues discuss outside of work. As far as people outside are aware, you’re just a doctor working and giving care in a private hospital. Confidentiality is strictly enforced - anything that happens in the building stays within the four walls.

You have to wear full sleeves to hide the bruises that you get from handling some of the violent patients. The nurses always have it worse since they do interact with them more but that doesn’t mean yours aren’t visible enough to raise some concerns. You do try to scrutinise the job and see the rewarding sides to it though, despite how exhausted you are already.

That burnt soreness on your tongue is still there from the hot coffee you finished just earlier and what's worse is that after rummaging through your work bag, you found that you’re fresh out of breath mints. Well shit then - you’re stuck with having coffee breath until your tight lunch break. Coffee breath was the last thing that you’re concerned about though, with the busy schedule you have today. You just completed the inpatient care and are now providing care to the outpatient department.

Your clipboard is under your tight grip as you’re filling in the details. Sitting opposite you is Peter, your last morning patient. He has a skinny and pale frame and just like most of the other patients, he has a buzz-cut hairstyle.

“So, it’s been a good month since I prescribed you your new medications for your schizophrenia. How has it been affecting you?” Your eyes are still glued to your clipboard.

“It’s been better than the old one, I don’t have any severe side effects,” Peter replied, possessing a strong southern accent.

“That’s perfect, but I will still need the nurses to check your blood sugar levels from time to time. High cholesterol is one of the side effects of this new medication,” You scrape your tongue with your front teeth briefly, trying to soothe the soreness as you speak while mentally reminding yourself to push through and that this is your last patient before your break.

Out of nowhere, the sound of someone screaming could be heard coming from a few rooms away. It's normal to hear some patients yelling occasionally whether it’s them resisting medication or their mood swings going haywire. After all, one of the biggest conflicts between patients and doctors is medication. But this doesn’t sound like someone was resisting. None of the screaming that you’ve heard sounded like this. This is more shrilling, you can almost hear the fear in their cry before it cuts off with crunching sounds and gargling despair and then it stops.

“Doc…?” Peter’s voice shakes as he speaks. He's now starting to hyperventilate - a bad sign that his anxiety is accumulating.

“Everything will be okay, I’m sure the nurses got it handled,” in truth, you were pretty tense yourself but you had to keep your composure and stay calm, for the sake of your patient.

One of the many vital rules that is heavily emphasised is that healthcare staff must leave their patient in a healthy and calm condition. Anything else is a sign of inadequate treatment and can result in a strike. You’re already on your first one and the punishment you faced was just about bearable. You can’t afford another strike on your record - the week has barely started. Really, that should encourage you to prioritise your patient but you can’t help but wonder what was going on out there. It doesn't help when you hear more screaming, this time it’s a masculine voice and you could just about make out what he’s saying before it stops.

“Please don’t hurt me! Where are the fucking nurses ah-!” There’s a painful howl before it cuts off silent again. You and Peter stay quiet waiting for any more disturbing sounds but the silent prologue for a full minute.

“Will it make you feel better if I take a look outside?” He nods, still staying quiet from shock. You’re not going to leave the room since you can’t leave Peter unattended, they’re watching what you’re doing in a control room through a monitor, so you just stick your head out the door and scan the wide hallways. Of course, you can’t see anything because it was coming from one of the other rooms.

The temptation of just leaving the room is drilling in your head. For God's sake, why would they be focusing on you and watching you do your job when they should be focusing on whatever the hell was going on out there?

It seems like they read your mind because the emergency alarms start blaring through the perpetual halls with red lights flashing. You’ve never heard the emergency alarms go off, not until today at least and that was enough for you to exit the patient room. You can hear Peter calling after you, asking where you’re going or what you’re going to do. You don’t really know what you're doing, you're just following these intrusive thoughts, jogging lightly and just hoping it’s not the worst. Whatever the worst may be.

There's more uncontrollable screams that continue to echo through the halls sounding more distant as it bounces off the walls but with still the same level of fear etched in their voices if not, more. The ringing of the alarm is still going off, sounding more urgent and louder. Your head starts to spin as you replay that one sentence in your head…

I’m sure the nurses got it handled.

You stop for a moment and look back at how far you’ve gone - Peter's room feels like miles away now when you’ve only walked a few metres. You have a sense of discomfort that seems to erupt inside you. A strong feeling that something was going to happen. Before you could turn back to continue you felt something hit the back of your head causing a sharp pain shooting through your skull. Your body collapses forward and slowly and you feel your consciousness slip away and vision fade into blackness.

There’s a sharp inhale before you feel your senses coming back to you slowly as you open your eyes. It took you a moment to gather yourself together and remember your surroundings. There’s no more screaming or alarms - nothing but the sound of your pulse hammering in your ears. The halls are still flashing red. Not good. Your vision is still a little blurry and your heads throbbing like mad. Stupid concussion. You still don’t know who the fuck just slammed the back of your head like that.

What’s worse is you don’t know how long you were knocked out but if it’s this quiet, something is definitely not right. What happened to Peter? Shit. With extra precaution and making sure you don’t collapse again, you lift yourself up from the floor and make your way to Peter’s room with wobbly steps. The room isn’t that far for you but your body is still weak and moving painstakingly slow. When you reach his room, you almost throw up at the sight inside.

Someone got to him before you could because now he’s on the floor with his mouth stretched open so wide, the cheeks are torn out. Despite Peter’s thin face and prominent cheekbones, you could still see the fleshy meat from his cheeks that had been plumped out. There was no way someone could do this with their bare hands. Some sick person must’ve used a metal instrument to rip this poor man’s face.

His arms and legs were completely popped out of their joints and dislocated. The crunching you heard earlier must’ve been the sound of bones joints snapping from elsewhere. His gown is now stained with blood from his mouth. You’ve seen a lot of gory scenes at your job but nothing like this. You can’t stomach the sight any longer so you leave feeling utterly repulsed and a little guilty that you can’t do anything. Why did you have to leave him alone? You were hoping the image would leave your mind but it’s already locked in making you feel queasy.

You don’t know where you’re going since there’s no lead and the screaming has stopped. There’s a feeling of emptiness and torment hovering around you as you stiffly walk through the halls, closing in on one of the ward rooms - you weren’t prepared to see inside so when you catch a glimpse of one of the patients on the floor, the squeamish feeling inside your stomach returns.

Inside you could see a few more patients on the floor, arms and legs dislocated as well as their heads being twisted until their necks were snapped. Their faces aren’t mutilated like Peter’s but you could see some of them have holes on the side of their heads where their ears used to be and are now replaced with a crimson pool that dripped down their faces and on the floor. Clearly whoever did this, wanted to get the job done fast.

Each room you pass, you see more and more limp forms littering the floor, not only patients but the healthcare workers there as well - doctors and nurses. It’s all out of control. There are bloody hands smeared and printed on the wall too. The more you continue to walk, the more alone you feel knowing that the people you care for and work with are gone. You feel like you’re surrounded by ghosts - spirits just floating around you. You push your way through the double door and make your way to the main reception, now fully bracing yourself for the worst yet to come.

Hank can feel the heated vexation across his face and the blood rushing in his ears as he gawks down at the last dead body with pride. He was sure that he managed to wipe out everyone in this poor excuse of a hospital. It’s not like it’s a big building so surely after 2 hours, he can wrap it up and call it a job well done. But it’s not complete until he finds you again. Find your sleeping form that is, since he had to knock the fucking day lights out of you. You don’t deserve to see what he did - he’s hoping you’re still knocked out before he retrieves you.

Before he could turn around, there’s the sound of the heavy double doors squeaking as you pushed your way with aggression. The hostility quickly melts away from you as you stare intensely at him, frozen in place from shock. Your mouth starts to quiver and Hank notices a few tears just spilling from your eyes.

“What have you done?!” Your voice breaks with distress. Hank steps a little closer, the metal pipe slips out from his bloody hands as he walks towards you. You’re always easy on the eye but now the glow that would always radiate from you is flushed out. The eye bags under your eyes is more visible now and the rims of it are now red from your salty tears. You look raw and Hank finds himself absolutely adoring this state of you. Probably more now than ever.

He still doesn’t understand why you’re so upset though. Why do you cry for these people? You didn’t mean anything to them. They just used you as a product for your intelligence and for their advantage. Of course you don’t understand that now but one day, you will be grateful for what he has done.

And that’s a promise.

Okay I genuinely don’t have too much to say about this video but one thing I will say is that it hits very close to home, in a very odd way. I could just be projecting and taking this the wrong way. However, I was the youngest child in my family, and I was too young to understand some of the stuff that happened around me or people tried to shelter me from it. Then when I was outright told the truth it kind of broke the way I viewed my life and the people in it, in a way that can’t really be fixed. So I feel that a lot through Vincent’s situation. Obviously not the same thing because my family isn’t centuries old vampires who have killed before and will kill again lmao. But that feeling of not knowing what to trust anymore, or what was real or what you just made up to make things fit the narrative that you were told. It hits pretty fucking deep.

(Am I over sharing on the internet? Possibly. But also it’s my blog so I can do whatever I want!)

Overall my thoughts areeee… While the summit wasn’t what I was expecting it was going to be I enjoyed it! It was refreshing to get some… possible moves on other storylines, some foreshadowing for ones that are going, and new information on characters!

as you guys know, ive been super determined to shift recently and YALL I SWEAR I GOT SO CLOSE THIS MORNING !!!!

i had three very lucid dreams, so lucid in fact, that it felt like i had shifted until everything started going hazy and i failed a reality check ! ANYWAY LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THEM BC I FEEL LIKE IM GONNA SHIFT ANY MINUTE NOW FR FR

so it started with me waking up at 7am and then trying to sleep but failing so i decided to go on tiktok for a bit and then did an alunir julia method awake meditation which didnt work as an awake method so i rolled over and decided to try and get some sleep and then i had this random dream and i think i woke up and tried to get back into the dream but visualising it and then i felt myself begin to fall through my bed which is how ik im about to lucid dream, so i started affirming that i was in my dr and YALL THE SYMPTOMS WERE INSANEEE ! as i was falling through my bed i felt something wrap around my waist and it wasnt painful but it was quite tight and not exactly comfy but i powered through and it felt like my entire body was contorting like yk in stranger things s4 when vecna strikes his victims, THAT is what it felt like but not painful, just uncomfortable and weird. im shifting to my tsitp dr right, and after that weird contortionist shit was over, i heard waves crashing, birds chirping and people talking in the distance it was unreal but silly old me thought i had gone to sleep with audios playing (i hadnt) so i didnt realise i could’ve potentially mini shifted !?!? anyway, i woke up in this room and immediately knew something was off because i was in this really dull dark grey room that just had a double bed in it where i was sleeping. i got dragged out of bed by my feet by this kid and i was so confused and i somehow knew jeremiah was there and i called to him but he looked awful idk why but it was like walmart jeremiah and i did a reality check and didnt pass so i knew i was dreaming. i was like okay i have to go but can i have the jacket youre wearing rn and he was like um and i was like ok nvm can i just have a hoodie of yours and he went to get me one and then i was like actually im trying to shift, can you help me make a portal and he was like yeah sure so we made a portal together and i affirmed to activate shift this time and walked through it and then i ended up in this other reality which was like a wr but in my dream and i got a random witch from hp to help me make a portal and i kept trying to go through it except it was flying away ? eventually i did go through it and ended up in another reality similar to my dr, all the characters were there but something felt off again bc we were in this random house with all our suitcases ? and jeremiah walked through the door and he looked weird again so i did a reality check and my finger went straight through my palm so i laughed and then i lost lucidity and woke up but what a whirlwind. also there’s literally no way shifting is lucid dreaming lmfao get that idea out of your head fr

I kind of hope that what we take away from the whole Dracula Daily thing is that the best way to get people reading is not to shame them for what they are reading or for not reading - but to offer a nice social environment for reading. This might be, as so often before, the teacher in me speaking, but personally I’m convinced that spikes in trends and popularities of books have a lot to do with people enjoying the social bubble where they can talk about their reading or even film or show or whatever. Take Goncharov! It’s a “movie” that doesn’t even exist but people went insane for days talking about it - and sure, that’s partly owed to the whole thing being a joke that’s funny, but really, people like doing stuff with people. I don’t think as many people would have part-taken if it hadn’t involved this much interactions and ‘yes, and-’-ing 

e.g., when people discuss audio books, one argument is often brought up: That silent, solitary reading is a rather recent development. That for a long time, people would read stories out loud - and often, communally. In those contexts this is usually brought up to highlight how listening to a story is a perfectly acceptable way of reading it. But there is another aspect here - the communal aspect. Because if one person reads, that also entails conversation about the book, choosing the book together, exchanging speculation about how it might go on and how you liked the chapter and what your thoughts were - and conversation and hearing other people’s perspectives usually sparks new ideas, new thoughts, etc. For me, personally, the fact that my grandfather and my mother used to read to me as a child - even long books or complicated books and that they would talk to me about those books, explain words to me or recommend to me things from their own childhood, was a huge factor in my literary development and it was very communal. 

I remember reading Twilight when it came out because all my friends read it and I wanted to partake in that conversation. And the thing is, I was never a hardcore, sincere, genuine Twilight fan - but it’s still something I had complex thoughts about and that I remember with more clarity than some of the other books I read at the same time and that actually I enjoyed more than Twilight - and tbh, part of me is convinced that it’s bc I had my daily book club going on where everyone discussed their daily Twilight reading.

And I know, I’ve done my fair share of bad-mouthing TikTok - mostly about the way they discuss books and its lack of individuality and the way it affects the book market and their paranoia of imaginary classics-loving elitists trying to force them to read stuffy old racist books or, oh, yeah, the zlib thing - and pls for the love of god, don’t take this as backtracking on any of that. But if I see some of my six-graders read “They Both Die In The End”, knowing they either got it directly bc of BookTok or because BookTok flooded the English-language section of all our local book stores (sigh) than I’m really happily taking this over any of the kids who say they “don’t read at all, don’t want to read, haven’t read in years”, think “reading is boring”. Because it is far easier to expand your taste in books than it is to go from reading no books for a long stretch of your formative years into reading books at all, especially if you stopped as a kid and want to pick up again at some point in adulthood.

OH MY GOD I CANT BELIEVE I ALMOST MISSED POSTING ABT BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN'S ANNIVERSARY???? im gonna get mushy here so if yall wanna skip this go for it i wont hold it against you lol but this movie means a lot to me (if u cant tell) and id just kinda like to share a little bit abt why

I remember when I first saw Brokeback, I'd been either a junior or senior in high school, and I had watched it with my ex. I literally have no clue how we got to watching it or who proposed we watch it in the first place, but I remember that even back then I had been incredibly moved by the story.

Cut to 5-6 years later, and in January of this year I'd been in the midst of a really, super dark depression thanks to some health issues that I've been dealing w for awhile now. It made it so that on top of COVID, I wasn't rly getting out of the house for anything but school, and even then doing that took a really big toll on my anxiety. So basically, from the time that the 2021 winter semester had ended for me in early December, to when school started back up again for the spring in late January, I hadn't left the house at all.

In mid January, like a week before school started back up for me, I was scrolling through Hulu, bored out of my mind and also trying to find something to occupy my time and thoughts w bc I'd been going stir crazy, and I saw that Brokeback had been listed again. I kinda lingered on it because I remember phil (@/senditothemoonn) had watched it like a month or two before and she had started talking abt it in our group chat and posting quotes abt it and stuff, and it had been awhile since I'd seen it so I was like hey! What the hell! Lets give it a watch, its time I watch it again anyways.

And like. Something happened to the world for me after that viewing. It was like it had blown apart, and when it came back together it was completelty rearranged for me.

I'm not entirely sure why that time around the movie has such a deep, DEEP impact on me when I had seen it before, and had been very touched by it back then. I think its partly that a. I never used to watch movies with subtitles, and so before I realized that I probably have issues with the way my mind processes sound, a lot of movie dialogue just kinda. Didn't get internalized by me for some reason? Even now when I rewatch old faves that I haven't seen with subtitles, I'm always astounded by what the hell theyre saying because I had never rly picked up on it before, lol.

And like...I mean if you've seen the movie then you already know this, but their accents and dialect are kinda hard to get through. ESPECIALLY when it comes to Heath as Ennis. Which isn't in any way a jab at him, I think every part of his performance is super thoughtful and well-crafted and every acting choice he makes serves the character in only positive ways. But when you already have issues processing audio, and when you have a character who's jaw is perpetually cleched so tight that the words literally have to "fight" their way out of his mouth, its just like. Not the best combination lol.

And so this time around when I saw the movie, I saw it with subtitles and it opened up a new dimension of the film to me. Honest to God, the first time I watched the movie, I had no idea that the shirts at the end were so signifigant because Jack had stolen Ennis'. I guess the first time I saw it, I didn't catch the part where Ennis talks about having left his damn shirt up there, and Jack just kinda shrugs it off and changes the subject. When I saw that moment this time, it didn't really strike me as anything important until the movie got to the end and you realize that Jack had kept the shirts all those long 20 years and UGH. I literally remember screaming with tears in my eyes, thats what happened to the shirt! There they are! And then when I saw that Ennis had put his shirt over Jack's to hang together on his closet door for the rest of his life? Dead. Dead, I was literally stabbed in the heart 50 million times and killed dead. I'd never made those connections before and now that I had I like. got it, yanno? I got why this was an oscar winner, and why people were sk devastated by its best picture loss. Not that I hadn't before, but it just hit so much harder.

So yeah, the subtitles probably had a lot to do w why its stayed lingering in my mind for a long while, but I also think its because in a few ways it kind of spoke to me and made me think about my health issues and the self-imposed quarantine that I'd put myself through for the better part of a year at that point.

To me, the whole story is about regret, about not taking the chances we have while we have them and having to learn to live with knowledge of the things we didn't let ourselves do and the memories we didn't let ourselves make.

I hadn't seen a lot of my family for awhile at that point because I just didn't want to be out of my house, and its only been recently that I realized how much life I've missed out on living for a good year and a half-ish or so. And like yeah, I have a reason, my health issues and super aggressive anxiety have kinda put me through the ringer. But I dunno like. I kind of empathized and related to Ennis' character in a really odd way, because he also let his fear control what he did and especially what he did not do, and for that, he ended up living a half-life and missed his chance of getting to spend his time with the person he loved the most.

For me, the fear of regret is one of my biggest motivators in doing literally anything. I've realized I don't want to end up like Ennis, isolating myself from my loved ones and missing out on the chance for love and life because of some issues I have. And I mean its not like they're not real issues. Just like the fears that motivated Ennis' actions, theyre very real concerns. But since seeing the movie, I've been a lot more proactive about seeing doctors and trying to get this shit fixed up, because I don't want to end up wasting my life away. I wanna find my Jack, and I wanna be happy, and I wanna live.

Anyways. Happy 17th birthday to my favorite movie in the world <3

Chess and Wick somehow meet up an become besties after TTH. They’re hangin out ina mall when an unexpected twist causes Chess to become triggered into a state of dissociation.

Wick was holding up a jacket. It had some bright floral patterns on it, which reminded me of Wick’s old uniform.

I took another sip from my slushie, contemplating it in my code while taking in Wick’s relaxed expression. My screen shifted into a soft smile.

“I think it’s pretty damn fitting, you hippie.”

They shot me an eye-roll and began to try it on, testing the fit of the material. It reminded me of those jackets organics would get from attending high school, kind of like Lemon- ah, Lemie’s old uniform.

I took another sip of my drink, the cold liquid feeling tingly on my magical tongue. I’ve always liked the colder foods that organics made, sometimes when I was good I would-

“I think that you look rather fit in it Wick. I bet it would look nice with embroidery too. You do seem to like crafting.”

Oh, the other code must have kicked in. Fuck, I need to stop spiraling into thinking tangents.

“Ah, feeling more serious?” He asked casually, taking notice of my changed eye display, “That is a good idea too, I’m thinking I might get it.”

Well, Prof was right, Wick looked like they belonged in something as comfortable as that.

“How is everything going?”

The voice creeps from over the clothing display.

A black hand, flecked with magic, is placed on the edge of the metal rack.

Familiar.

My slushie suddenly feels too warm. Too thick. I can barely muster up enough strength to get it through the straw.

“It is going very well Sir!”

Sir.

“We’re doing just fine. Our decision is already made, we don’t need assistance,” Wick’s deadpan voice creeps into the edges of my audio receptors. I barely even noticed my own voice before-

Wick takes my unburdened hand into his own, giving my metal a gentle squeeze.

“That is wonderful to hear. Let me know if you need anything else at any time.”

“Of course, Sir.”

I’m shaking. Why am I shaking?

I feel a finger flick the front of my monitor.

“Hey now- you don’t gotta apologize. Where’s that unapologetic bastard I met back in hell? Who punched me straight in the monitor when I said shit about stuff I didn’t understand?”

Next was the hug. A cold embrace from a friend who now also has sticky knees from the stupid floor.

“Right. Okay. I’m not fucking sorry, and I totally should have shoved my drink at that guy’s face instead-“ I hastily breathed out, a lighter tone at the end of my words.

“Whatever you say. How about we go pay for this jacket and get out of here? Do you want another slushie, Chess?”

I look Wick in the eyes, seeing her gentle expression yet again.

She cares so much.

im soo mad i had such a comprehensive answer to this post and tumblr ATE IT so now i gotta rewrite the whole thing from memory. hell on earth :[

alright i CANNOT take credit for eldritch bain thats @des-paa-cee-toeee BABYY!!! eldritch duke came about on a whim before i knew abt despaa’s take on eldritch bain but it was soooo fun learning abt this bain and throwing ideas at the wall (discord dms) to see what stuck (exploded in the microwave). i cant speak to bain's origins bc im still learning them myself but ive got some eldritch duke facts down. readmore placed below to contain the brainspill ^_^ (and it really is one hell of a brainspill like it got way longer than i intended so sorry in advance😭)

right so dukes a university student in the late 60s/early 70s(?)

hes taking part in an archaeology project with one of his classmates in a forest near his uni (studying bone fragments, arrowheads, just collecting random samples) and keeping audio logs of the whole project

his classmate strays too far and messes around in a bunch of forestbeings' turf

the beings retaliate by possessing/driving the classmate mad

classmate offs duke via rock crimes (fly high babe) and duke gets to spend some time getting acquainted with the spirits in the trees

one of the forestbeings decides that that was kinda fucked up in hindsight and takes pity on duke, searing life and consciousness back into his broken body and resurrecting him from the mud as a nothuman trapped in a mostly mortal vessel (you work with what ya got)

this process might take a while but idk if itll make up the 20 yr gap in his lifespan yet (give that hes 20ish in the 70s and shows up in pd2 in 2017 as a 50 yr old and not a 70 yr old)

i just think hes neat!

tbh idk how i actually feel abt writing this duke au given that i think im also writing some other stuff rn but i looove gnawing on it when im spaced out during class its like my screensaver. i actually started a little smthg as a sort of taste-test for this au where its a police report on the case of duke's initial disappearance in the 70s, documenting the weird facts from an in-universe after-the-fact pov (i am such a sucker for dramatic irony its not funny) and working through the story in the form of aforementioned audio logs. pasting the scraps below

Friends initially report 20-year-old August Lindenhurst missing on August 18th, 1968.

Over summer break, Lindenhurst had been taking part in a month-long personal project proposed by 19-year-old Gillian 'Gill' Dorsey, both students at Dennington University. Classmates became concerned when the project's allotted time period ended and Lindenhurst had still not returned to campus. He and Dorsey were last seen entering the forest behind the main building (see map in addendum 2A) with bags one month prior. Investigators organized search teams, which found their equipment still intact in a makeshift bell tent approximately 1.8 miles from campus, and CSI later noted that the project seemed largely archaeological in nature. Around the same time the tent was discovered, a welfare check conducted on Dorsey's dorm discovered her partially decomposed body still in bed (Dorsey case filed separately, though it shares many unusual circumstances with this one).

CSI recovered a collection of microtapes from the tent in the forest, dated throughout the month as audio logs leading up to Lindenhurst's disappearance. Detective Greene was able to transcribe a majority of the logs’ content despite questionable integrity following recent storms. Following analysis of the tapes, the Lindenhurst case was changed from missing persons to homicide. Transcripts deemed relevant to the case are attached below (transcripts for the rest of the tapes available in addendum 2F).

and then the transcript of the first tape starts! from there the rest of the story plays out over multiple tapes as duke n his classmate (using gill dorsey as a placeholder name for no reason in particular) pick through tiny buried oddities over the course of about a month. all the while we see signs that theres Something In These Woods thrown in (discussing strange dreams in passing, unidentified voices heard on tape, odd changes in behavior seen in casual conversation, etc) leading up to the discovery of The Final Tape later on in the case, recorded on the day the project was supposed to end

The original recorder was recovered in a clearing approx. 600 feet from the tent. Clear signs of a fight present in surroundings (see addendum 3A-3G). Blood at the scene matched with Lindenhurst. The recorder still contained the most recent (presumably final) microtape inside. Det. Greene reassigned for transcription.

and then we get into the nitty gritty of the day of the attack. the report basically concludes with “well that was fucked up” given that lindenhurst’s killer classmate is also dead under mysterious circumstances (found in bed with their mouth and lungs all full of dirt, more thoughts on that but this post is more than long enough rn) so theres kinda. no one to prosecute. the story itself ends with the whole case file being completely wiped by bain, revealing that we were just reading the report along with him the entire time as part of a background check on duke. hes troubled by the implications to say the least, like sorry man you found more than you bargained for in this funky crime grandpa!! the whole ‘coming back nothuman’ thing isnt super covered in this version of the story bc it is still just a police report and obvs cant have ALL the details but that does still happen

I was happy we have an audio drama with the girls just hanging out after their focus ep but I didn't ask for all this schoolwork... Notes: - Yuuna's talking about how when the big plate of fried chicken comes out and everyone races to get pieces they like - Just in case it's unclear she means letting people stay to study in the lib instead of just borrowing the books - The three notes that come after are all kiiind of related but ngl there's no good way to put this in eng bc they're related to irregular verb conjugations in jp grammar: ari ori haberi ima so kari (ありおりはべりいまそかり/ 在り居り侍り在そがり) is a mnemonic ppl use to remember the verb conjugations for verbs that end in ru in old jp the words themselves are all variations of 'to be', na ni nu nuru nure ne is for verbs ending in nu, and ka ki ku kuru kore koyo are for the verb kuru

let me clarify for you! this blog began in spring 2020 as an incorrect quotes blog for the legend of zelda fan comic, linked universe - since then, i have fallen into writing for three main fandoms (with varying degrees of obsession), which are bnha, obey me!, and redacted asmr:

bnha - stands for 'boku no hero academia', or 'my hero academia' - it's an ongoing manga with an accompanying anime series, set in an alternate future where superpowers exist and following a young group of students at a school for heroes in japan.

obey me! - 'shall we date?: obey me!' is a mobile gacha-based otome game (i.e. it's a dating sim) that is set in a high school for demons in hell, where you romance the seven personifications of sin. (more dateables, like barbatos who i write so much about, have been added since then, but the premise is the same.) you, the mc, get teleported to hell for your exchange year abroad, and do lots of kissing and dance battles to progress the story.

redacted asmr - a youtube channel, which explores an alternate universe identical to our own where magic exists but is hidden from the general population. everything is audio-only, so there's no visual aspect. there's a broad range of characters (laid out at the bottom of this post here!) who (with one or two exceptions) all have their own listeners (i.e. us!) who they romance over time.

all of these are still ongoing - bnha has new manga chapters every week, obey me! keeps adding new chapters fairly frequently, redacted asmr gets two new uploads a week - so there's no shortage of fun stuff! i highly recommend all of them, and i hope this helps :)

In the belly of the beast.

It is a pain to get into. The cover is held by 8 small machine screws with four a bit hard to get to, two of which are very hard. Oh and that is after you wrestle the heavy thing off of the rack. I only did a visual check in general and did not adjust anything.

Ok the results of the inspection. The amplifier was in the shop at Innovative Audio in Surrey BC about 5 years before the previous owner bought it. I found a label that they use to book in all their work. Several of my pieces have been worked on there and got such labels. The work was done in 2015 when the thing would have been 25 ish years old. That was a pleasant surprise.

One of the items to replace in old tube amps is electrolytic capacitors. Seems that was done. The Stock ones are 800uF @ 450V and the big black ones here are 1000 uF @ 500V. Bigger can be stressful on a power supply (ask me how I know) but the amp charges through a thyristor which limits the current at turn on. You can see it in the photo as the gray disk just to the right of the big black capacitors. There is also a small cap on the board that looks like it may be original but is in good shape. So that big ticket item is off the list. ( yes I have spares for the little ones but they were cheap)

Biggest surprise is the tubes. None are stock as I was originally told. It looks like they are low hours as best a visual check can tell. The Shiny parts are nice and shiny. Those discolor when they get tired. They are 6550 which is the stock type, but they are US made Philips ECG type which is not stock. Likely made in the 1980s when Philips bought the US Sylvania factory. Stock ARC used Russian usually as they needed a steady supply. Philips shut down the plant just as ARC brought this to market. So somebody paid a premium for NOS 6550s I think. I pulled each one out and gave it a look. Each was hand labeled for position on the board and had a numerical value from the matching apparently most were 52 to 56, but one was less.

Pulling and moving the tubes can help with the contact of the pins in the sockets. I was a bit anal of me as I wore cotton gloves. Not really necessary, but old habits.

The driver tubes are also not stock. I had bought a set which is now a spare (not too expensive). There are four drivers and they were Toshibas. I had bought some Toshiba 6922s for my old tube preamp. They are very nice generally. I also pulled and put them back. The pins had a bit of heat discoloration, but the tubes looked good.

I looked for the connection test points for Bias when I decide to do that. They are stupid hard to access. Back in the day Dynaco would put an extra tube socket on the outside of their amp base and run test points to that. Such a simple idea. As ARC have it you need to use those hook clips to leads on two resistors and run this with covers on to get heat in then do the adjustments. I saw one photo where a guy had 4 digital multi meters hooked up to track the bias test voltage. I have two digital multi-meters. Still what an FN pain.

I was generally pleased with my inspection. So I put the covers back on and plugged everything back in. She fired up with no smoke or flames and I played a couple albums. All good. In fact it may have sounded a tiny bit different with the tubes getting their pins cleaned up a bit.

There's a minor niggle with the amp and that is it only takes 0.55 volts to drive it to full output. That's not much. I have to run the sp14 preamp with full attenuation and the volume turned way down. Not the optimal setting.

Insert my rant here about tubes sounding different from each other. Tube rollers love that, but to me it speaks of a problem with the concept. But hey I signed back on to the tube tribe.
