The Act 1 Wyll and Aurel dynamic is so funny to me actually.
Because Aurel is a dhampir, he has had Bad Experiences with monster hunters, he is traveling with Wyll out of necessity because of the tadpoles but he cannot let Wyll find out what he is.
But Aurel can only think "He is a monster hunter, which means his view of the world is limited and he will strike me down the moment he knows what I am" for so long after knowing Wyll. Because Wyll is so nice. He so sincerely want to help the tieflings at the grove (but, well, they're not monsters, they're refugees, so that just means he's an honorable man) and he's fine with Astarion being a vampire (but then, Astarion's an idiot who isn't all that much of a threat, so of course he's not going to worry about killing Astarion) and he's willing to spare Karlach at the expense of his own safety and...
And eventually Aurel cannot hide from the fact that Wyll is, fundamentally, a kind and honorable man. He is not like the other monster hunters Aurel has faced, the ones driven by dogma and hatred. Wyll is guided by love, by compassion, by a desire to protect people and he only directs his fury towards those who are actively harming innocents. By all rights, Aurel should realize midway through Act 1 that Wyll isn't going to try and kill him on the spot as soon as he knows what Aurel is.
But Aurel doesn't tell anyone about what he is. It is a secret he holds onto out of old fears and anxieties. The last time his secret was discovered the man he loved was killed, and he won't go through that again. It eats at him, the what if's crawling around his insides and keeping him awake at night every time a new companion's secret is discovered. And Aurel is so prone to spiraling, to getting lost in the worst-case scenarios - no matter how absurd or unlikely they may be.
It comes to a point where every time he talks to Wyll there is an ache in his heart because Wyll is a good man, he's such a good man and Aurel is so glad to call him friend, and perhaps in another life they could have...no, no, the nature of his existence means that one day they will be fundamentally opposed to one another and Aurel's heart will break again.
And meanwhile Wyll has probably already figured out that Aurel's a dhampir because a) he doesn't need to breath, b) he goes out for 'nightly walks' WAY too much for a guy who complains about nature all the time, and c) one time he climbed up a sheer cliff-face like david bowie in labyrinth when he thought no one was looking (wyll was looking) and now he's just trying to come up with a tactful way to breach the subject. Because from what he's read dhampirs are usually pretty touchy about the whole 'vampire parent' thing and he knows what it's like to have a fraught relationship with a parent, and he doesn't want to push if it's a sensitive subject...
So you've got Aurel talking himself into seven different anxiety attacks on a daily basis while Wyll stands to the side going "how do I tell him I already know without making this Worse"

I want to get back to my increasingly masochistic hobby of liveblogging shit-tier movies in the middle of the night but I don’t know how I’m ever going to top Dracula: the Dark Prince in terms of sheer incomprehensible fuckery. like. the playmobile-looking thunderclap castle. the script that was very obviously a first draft and sometimes repeated an entire sentence twice in a scene or had the entirely wrong word in the middle of a sentence and the actors just rolled with it. the awkward random cuts to the ambient lesbians. the way all the actors’ facial expressions seem completely detached from what they’re saying. the “traditional hungarian” meal of a costco roast chicken and the kind of fruit platter soccer moms pick up on the way to a potluck. leonardo. how do I move forward.

A HALL OF FAMER
by Réginald-Jérôme de Mans
A few words inspired by the recent induction of Bryan Ferry’s band Roxy Music into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It’s more or less a meaningless honor, even if well overdue – bands can be inducted 25 years after their founding, and Roxy, thanks to the divergent geniuses of Ferry and fellow founder Brian Eno, was the most influential and groundbreaking presence to emerge from the early 1970s glam rock movement apart from David Bowie.  And Ferry was almost as protean, as multifaceted and chameleonlike, with all the loungey lizardlike charm that suggests, as Bowie.
Even if today Roxy Music is remembered mainly, if at all, for its last album, Avalon, an ethereal album that is to makeout music what Shakepeare is to clichés.  And Ferry remembered, generally, for remaking Avalon over and over over the course of his solo career to limited degrees of success, as if trapped in that ether, a Phantom-Zoned wraith in a white dinner jacket.
It wasn’t, he wasn’t, only that.  Ferry as #menswear style icon has helped perpetuate the cliché of his Avalon days and sound, aloofly dapper as a gyrfalcon alights on his Savile Rowed wrist and Sophie Ward pirouettes. He was better remembered for his conservative elegance than his music: my first exposure to him was in the first issue of Esquire Gentleman 25 years ago, a very short-lived Esquire spinoff that was supposed to actually focus on clothes, and I bought my first Ferry albums on the basis of his languid, polished charm.
It was only as I worked my way back through his catalog that I choked with surprise on the earlier mad glam, tiger-striped, quiffed like outer space Teddy Boys, sweaty, exuberant, retro, musical attempts at Pop Art and perversity like Roxy’s early Remake/Remodel (whose chorus was the license plate number to the Studebaker Ferry had had in art school) or In Every Dream Home a Heartache, a pained love song to an inflatable doll. Ferry maintained a prolific solo career alongside his early Roxy stuff, quickly turning out effusive, brilliantly flamboyant covers of Bob Dylan (to this day the only form in which I can stand Dylan) and the Rolling Stones. His second solo album saw him posing in white dinner jacket in front of what appeared to be the end of a showbiz party around an LA pool.  The look, languid and decadent, stuck, even if his sound stayed sardonic and energetic.
The man didn’t seem to become the pose until the end of the 1970s.  Punk and New Wave (including quite a few bands heavily influenced by Ferry and Roxy) came into fashion.  On the heels of his worst-performing solo album, The Bride Stripped Bare, Ferry reformed Roxy Music with a new, more polished sound and lyrics underwritten to haiku obliqueness.
It’s Bride that resonates most with me now, his last album before that sea change, a name taken from Marcel Duchamp’s The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, a surrealist sculpture.  The bride in question is conspicuous by her absence, easy to suppose is Jerry Hall, who had left Ferry for Mick Jagger during the recording.  The bachelor is the one who’s bereft, nerves bare and taut.  From my middle age, the album appears cohesively intense, lonely, dark and bitter, the nighttime inner monologue of a romantic in Los Angeles, where most of it was written (Ferry recorded it in Montreux, Switzerland with a bunch of LA session musicians).  Living in Los Angeles in my 20s after college, I certainly ran the lyrics of a song like “Can’t Let Go” through my head driving at night through West LA, even if I wasn’t following a route from Bel Air like Ferry:
It’s a winding road from Cuesta Way Down Sunset to the beach Though Canoga Park is a straight safe drive It's too far outta reach.
But now the headlights are flashin' by so fast All directions seems the same And the windscreen wipers keep a beat repeatin' You can't let go again
True to the album’s sound, its cover was cold, metallic angular blues and grays, with Ferry himself posing in a dark leather sportcoat (far from Anderson & Sheppard country squire, this) and skinny tie.  But the man’s style, too, was never quite the arriviste cliché people assumed of the rock star insulating himself West End chic like a wannabe country gentleman in a drafty castle.  Even if he continued to use Anderson & Sheppard and Cleverley for custom suits and shoes, he patronized Versace in the 1980s, ordered flamboyant custom shoes from Berluti, and friends ran into him at a fitting at Italian tailors Rubinacci a decade ago.  He toured in a dinner jacket and leather trousers for a sterling album of Tin Pan Alley covers, As Time Goes By, continuing to be a genius reinterpreter… and that’s what Roxy had been at the beginning, a forward look back, a fanciful futuristic nostalgia act for 1950s rock and kitsch whose sound Eno hashed into Digital Age squiggles.

RWBY Sacanime and Fanexpo 2018 Panel Summaries
youtube
Panel was hosted by Michael Jones (Sun), Shannon McCormack (Ozpin), Jen Brown (Pyrrha) and Jason Douglas (Jacques). Barbara was also part of the Rooster Teeth Fanexpo panel, and the relevant RWBY Questions are at the end of this summary. Parts of this come from JayTriqz’s summary on Reddit.
Jen, do you think there are areas of Remnant that are Greek-Roman inspired? Jen hopes so. She’s still disappointed that Pyrrha's parents have not been mentioned at all and there wasn't a funeral for Pyrrha. She does say it would be cool if there were, but she thinks the reason Pyrrha was so Greek-Roman inspired is because MMK narrowed down on wanting an "Achilles" character.
Do you think RWBY will eventually have a 2D reboot? Michael, Shannon and Jen pitch an absurd idea involving Sun as the lead following a train accident that kills all of RWBY, then stress that they’re actors, not writers.
What was it like to record the Food Fight? Jen loved it, she was so glad she got to be a part of it. Michael: “At least you got to be in that fight.” Jen: “At least you’re still on the show!” Shannon: “I love that I’m in between these two because I’m both dead and still on the show!”
Shannon and Jen, what was your reaction to a scene from RVB 16? Shannon felt Wash’s anger in that scene came naturally to him- his direction was “imagine every moment someone lied to you.” He lives for moments where characters make what they think are good decisions that have dire consequences. Jen sympathizes with Carolina’s mindset in that moment, she finds it hard sometimes while record to separate herself from the character. She’s so used to Carolina that it can be hard to remember some specific moments of how she felt.
Michael, do you think it was weird that Sun basically followed Blake to the ends of Remnant? Micheal said no, and that Sun was just looking out for her. He also said he thinks Sun was always kinda an idiot, but he said that in V6 he takes his head out of his ass and kinda comes into his own and Blake is much more open with him. (Michael seemingly confirming that Sun will have focus in Volume 6. RIP the “Why Sun shouldn’t go to Atlas” crowd)
If your characters could be in any musical, what would it be? Sun would be in the Always Sunny in Philadelphia musical bit. Ozpin would be the shopkeeper in West Side Story. Pyrrha and Jaune would be in "The Last Five Years." Jen dovetails into talking about her love for horror here and mentions she’d love to see Grimm Pyrrha return.  Jacques would be a darker Daddy Warbucks from Annie.
Do you get surprised when you read the scripts? Jen knew since she got the role that Pyrrha would die. Pyrrha was supposed to die in V2, but they wanted to give her a bit more time to be around (additionally, production issues led to the Fall of Beacon being pushed back). Jen was surprised by Yang losing her arm though- you can hear her live reaction in the V3 Actor Commentary. Micheal only knows the basis of where RWBY is going, but not much. Camp Camp surprises him more than RWBY with some of the stuff he gets to say.
Whats your favorite line from any show you've done that’s stuck with you? Jen- "Sorry" (but her serious answer is Erid in Camp Camp saying "Pussies for Life" because she’s still amazed that that was something she got paid to say). Micheal- "Fuck you David" Shannon- "That was the worst throw ever. Of all time" Jason has fond memories of an anime he did called Wandaba Style.
If Micheal had to make a RWBY team with the people in AH, who’d he choose? Jack (who would cast buffs), Ryan (he thinks if he didn't take him he'd probably become a agent of death working for Humans, Faunus and the Grimm) and Gavin so he can slap him around.
Are you an indoors or outdoors person? Shannon is very indoorsy, Michael was but likes going out more since he moved to Austin and had Iris, Jen grew up outdoors then became introverted as she grew up and is now raring to get out more, Jason loves getting out for a while.
If you could make a RWBY character that was like yourself, how would they turn out? Micheal- It would just be Max from Camp Camp. Jason- An old and weary soldier with a dark past. Jen- Would like to be a dragon faunus because it sounds cool and would seem standoffish, but is actually super nice. Shannon- was very indecisive. He settles on someone who drive a wagon, be some kind of travelling carnival guy and be an irrelevant character whose stuff would get smashed whenever he wandered into a fight scene.
What would your characters theme song be (not from RWBY)? Sun- “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves. Pyrrha- Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love A Bad Name” (because of "shot through the heart"). Ozpin- Heroes by David Bowie. Jacques- Cold as Ice by Foreigner.
Whats more fun to record, RWBY or Chibi? Jen picks Chibi. She did also say that while she makes jokes about Pyrrha dying, she thinks its a huge honor that she played a character whose death is viewed as a massive impact to the show. Micheal also picks Chibi.
Favorite character that is not your own? Shannon, Jen and Micheal all pick Nora.
Michael, how’d you get from Youtube to voice acting? “Start yelling in your room while you live with your parents.” Michael can’t really answer, he just accepts anything that happens. He had no real plans and just was very lucky that the right people saw his videos and got him in with Rooster Teeth.
What is your favorite thing about your RWBY characters? Micheal picks Sun’s abs and his sunny nature. Shannon likes that Oz is basically him continually being typecast by Roosterteeth as this "immortal, unkillable being.” Jen picks Pyrrha's humility. That she was sweet and princessy, but not in a standoffish or obnoxious way. Jason admires Jacques for his opportunism and intellect, but he is very amoral. He likes those qualities, but would use them differently if he possessed them.
Most difficult line you’ve ever had to voice? Micheal- Nothing too crazy. He thinks that Max in the recent season of Camp Camp not being a piece of shit for one moment was difficult. Jen picked when someone asked her to be Pyrrha but doing the final monologue from Running Man from Arnold Schwarzenegger. Because Pyrrha doesn't get that angry. This was considered a "specific fetish."
Favorite character they've done? Jen- Harley Quinn in DCU Online (her literal dream role). Micheal likes them all. He likes Mogar because he was a character he created, and slowly developed him into this dumber character. He got into arguments with Lindsay about his character. Shannon likes them all for different reasons, but at that moment it is Quartermaster from Camp Camp. Jason goes for Beerus from Dragon Ball Super but mentions Wandaba Style as an honorable mention.
Fanexpo Questions
Will we see Nora before she met Ren? No, Barbara’s not a writer.
Will Yang make any puns in Volume 6? No.
What’s your favorite crackship? (DAMNIT BARBARA ARE YOU JUST A BAD LUCK CHARM FOR THIS FUCKING QUESTION) Yang/Yang, AKA Yangbang. I wish I could say I’m surprised at a selfcest joke but whatever.

DBRFSWHNERM #1: 1967’s “David Bowie”
Tumblr media
Hello, people reading this, and also, hello to people not reading this. I guess. I’m Dr. Ocsid (doctorate may or may not actually exist), and this is “David Bowie Reviews From Someone Who Has No Experience Reviewing Music”. Or “DBRFSWHNERM” for short. Send me a clip of you trying to pronounce that and I’ll officially consider you an interesting person. I only recently (speaking as in the past year or so) got into David Bowie’s music, and it’s a wonder plus a regret that I hadn’t before. Turns out, if you’re one of the biggest names in music history, chances are you’ve probably made some pretty good stuff. However, my experience with the late “Ziggy Stardust” or the “Thin White Duke” or whatever you may call him is still lacking. In fact, he amount of songs I’ve heard from him probably only range in the realm of a couple dozen at most - but that leaves me in an interesting position. What if I were to listen to all twenty-five of his albums in chronological order? What if I were to then share my thoughts on each and every one, as someone still entering into the world of Bowie? As someone who has literally never written so much as a sentence reviewing music before? No one asked for this, but then again, does everything need to be asked for? Either way, here’s my thoughts on Bowie’s first album – the creatively titled “David Bowie”, from 1967. Title: David Bowie Year: 1967 Favorite Song: Please Mr. Gravedigger Honorable Mention(s): Uncle Arthur Every time I try to think up a way to describe this album, the first word that comes to mind is “folksy”. A lot of the stuff here wouldn’t sound too out of place being sung at a renaissance festival, or as part of a musical set in medieval times. Maybe like Monty Python’s “Spamalot”. Perhaps I have no idea what I’m talking about due to having little knowledge of what was popular in the UK during the 60s, but that’s the vibe I get from most of it.
(Being that Wikipedia doesn’t describe this one as “Folk Rock” but does with the next one, I probably just don’t know what I’m on about.) This album is weird. That feels almost wrong to say, being that the music on it is actually generally very conventional. But it’s that normality that makes it weird by Bowie standards, ’cause it has none of that flair to it I’ve heard in his later songs. As far as I can detect, at least. I sure wouldn’t have guessed this was Bowie if someone played it to me with no context, even with his voice still being pretty recognizable in his twenties. Is it bad, though? I wouldn’t really say so, though that may just be my low standards kicking in. The whole album is just kinda there – there’s very little of interest about most of the songs, and not much to say about them, either. The opening track, “Uncle Arthur”, is sorta catchy at least. It tells the tale of a 32 year old man who still lives with his mom, who goes off, gets married, and then leaves his wife because she can’t cook. Yeah, it’s a song from the 60′s. The closest thing that comes to a “favorite”, though, is “Please Mr. Gravedigger”. It’s still nothing great, but it’s the one that stuck with me the most – though that’s partly because it made me laugh when Bowie sneezed halfway through the song. This piece sets itself apart from the rest of the album by having no instruments whatsoever; instead, the void is filled by what seems to be the sound of someone walking through a graveyard. Thunder, grassy footsteps, and constant rain set the scene for this song while Bowie sings some lyrics that, again, give off the vibe of some old folk song. Some “Oh my Darling Clementine” type stuff. That difference from the other songs is mainly what makes it my favorite, ’cause it’s at least got something interesting about it. Not something I’d actively listen to by my own choice, but then again, nothing on this album is. All in all, this album gets a resounding “meh” from me. Not the worst way Bowie could’ve started out, but there’s not much it has going for it otherwise. It wasn’t reviewed too well back then, and now it exists pretty much only as a novelty for the more die-hard Bowie fans to look back at and think “Man, I can’t believe this is the same guy who made ‘Heroes’.”

History of the Daft Punk duo by Aneta Dolega and Dominik Bułka
(do not remove credit)
1992 Before two french musicians Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo started to wear their robot suits under the band name Daft Punk and raised a musical revolution on dance floors, they’ve played in an indie-rock band called „Darlin’”, together with their school mate – Laurent Brancowitz. Bangalter and Homem-Christo have meet in the paris school Lycée-Carnot back in 1987. Soon, Brancowitz caught up with them. Melody Maker described the band, which name was taken from a Beach Boys track, as „a bunch of daft punk”. Darlin’ was allready spotted by the british band Stereolab, who took one of the Darlin’s tracks on a compilation, made by their own label. They’ve also made some concert possible for the Darlin’ to play in UK. The first Darlin’ single was sold in 1500 copies. A good start however, didn’t brought enough success and band awareness. Darlin’ was not yet broadly known in the homeland. Soon, bored with lack of progress, Bangalter and Homem-Christo started the electric band Daft Punk, and Brancowitz joined pop-rock band Pheonix.
1993 It’s been said, that its the best since the guillotine. Both gentlemen ditched guitars and found their new passion in EuroDisneyLand, where they took part in a huge rave party. The name Daft Punk was inspired by a review, the band got in a music magazine. But there is also the alternative story behind it, which tells that the name is short for “Dogs, Androids, Firemen and Tomatoes”. At this time, both guys have already started their experiments with electronica, synthesizers and drum machines. Soon, the duo was signed in Soma Quality Records. The label boss – Stuart Macmillan decided to launch a test-single record with Daft Punk.
1994 The debut single called “The New Wave” gets published, and receives a very warm welcome in the music industry. It seams that Daft Punk have moved the borders of the House music. They’ve added some disco and rock elements to it in an innovative way. In the end, the Daft Punk sound is a fusion of techno rhythm, with some inspirations from their youth. You can find Jimi Hendrix, Kiss, Television, Talking Heads, David Bowie or Serge Gainsgourg sounds in there. This way the Daft Punk duo stands hand in hand with Air and Cassius, as the ambassadors of the new wave of french music.
1995 In may 1995, Daft Punk has already gathered material for the new single, called “Da Funk”. On one of the versions, you could find a clip, directed by american director Spike Jonze (who made videos for Beastie Boys, Fatboy Slip, or “Be like John Malkovich”). It was the first time that the band had such a huge commercial success, selling over 30.000 copies of the record. They’ve won the UK, where they had supported for one of their favorite bands – The Chemical Brothers. It was also the general respect of the DJ community which they’ve received, with the remixes of the Brothers records, which also helped. In this period, the band got the attention of major record companies, who had noticed the success of the band and the rising popularity of house and rave music in Europe. In the end, Daft Punk signed a deal with Virgin Records, which let the artist have maximum of their freedom and a deal with their own record label Daft Trax.
1997 The duo gets to launch their own record label Daft Trax and take control of the productions. They also keep strict control over their appearance, showing on all promotional material in their famous masks, to keep their looks private. It all was important, with the ongoing “Daft Punk” press madness. The original headgear will evolve with time, and by the beginning of the XXI the gents will play gigs in high-tech helmets, designed by special-fx companies like Alterian (Zombieland) or Ironhead Studio (Batman Forever, Iron Man 2). The robot look will become their alter-ego with time. In one of the interviews, Homem-Christo explains, that its just a “creation” which allows the duo to make music, and the look is a great accessory to make a full picture to the sound they are creating. The robots are in the focus, not they, he added. On the 20th of January 1997 Daft Punk official launches the debut album, called “Homework”. On the playlist, we could find “Da Funk” and the new single “Around The World”, which becomes a huge hit. Even until now it is seen as a part of the electronic music golden era of late 90′. The band enjoys appreciation not only from the fans of electronic music, but also from the mainstream circles. Their popularity reaches the other side of the ocean, and “Da Funk” lands on the soundtrack to the “Sankt” movie picture directed by Philip Noyce. Soon, the band wins golden records in few countries, plays at the biggest festivals like Lollapallooza or Glastonbury. Their fame reaches other meaning, when the band asks fans to bring toys, in exchange for the Rex Club concert tickets. The gifts are then taken to a charity organization, which takes care of the poor children on the streets of Paris.
1998 The half of the duo – Thomas Bangalter, who started his own label Roulé sooner, launches a EP called “Music Sounds Better with You”, recorded together with other musicians under the name Stardust. The record becomes a hit, and dominates the charts and dance-floors all over the world. Bangalter also starts collaborations with the movie industry and records together with the french director Gaspar Noe. He writes music for controversial “Irréversible” with Monica Bellucci and “Enter the Void”.
2001 – 2005 The musicians join forces and record a very appritiated single “One More Time”, with a manga-styled video clip. Next, the “Discovery” album appears in march 2001. Using the rising returning wave of 70′s and 80′s disco music, the records becomes a commercial success. Soon after that, the french duo team up with japanese director Kazuhisa Takenouchi in “Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem”. The animated movie uses the same imaginary world of japaniese manga, which is used in the video clips for “Discovery”. On the 15th of march 2005 the “Human After All” LP goes on sale. The record is named the worst in the Daft Punk history. A huge tourne seems to rescue the image of the record. The band appears in high-tech robots suits with huge light-pyramids in background.
2006 – 2009 Daft Punk unleash the full potential of their creativity in their first directed motion picture “Daft Punk’s Electroma”, which had its premier at the film festival in Cannes. It tells a story off robots which want to become human. Still, the band continues to work on music, and by the end of 2008, their start to work on the forth album. In meantime, Daft Punk makes music for ads and movies. Homem-Christo becomes a producer for various projects. He is responsible for the success of “Sexuality” by Sébastien Tellier. One year later, Daft Punk wins two Gramy awards: best electronic album “Alive 2007” (recorded at Paris Bercy Palais Omnisports on 14.06.2007), and best single “Harder Better Faster Stronger” in the same category.
2010 In summer of 2010, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo are honored with a prestigious award – title of Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for their accomplishments in the field of arts in France and in the world. Couple of month later, Daft Punk write the original motion picture score to the science-fiction movie “TRON: Legacy”, directed by Joseph Kosinski. The sound of synthesizers and classical orchestra get combined. The dance tune “Derezzed” gets also a feature on the album. The record only sharpens the appetite of the fans.
2013 On the 21st of May the shop shelfs get a new guest – the long awaited new album from Daft Punk: “Random Access Memories”. The record is promoted through “Get Lucky” featuring Pharrell Williams. The album also gets co-work of musicians such as: Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Panda Bear, Nile Rodgers, Todd Edwards and the disco music legend – Giorgio Moroder. With the most of the tracks recorded with use of live instruments, the band pays honors to the roots of electronic music from 70s and 80s.

“She Worked for Me”
I recently wrote about the death of another pop music icon, David Bowie, and the ways in which freshly deceased pop stars are typically met with a posthumous wave of adulation (fat lot of good that does them). The great Aretha Franklin was no exception.
Except in the aptly named White House.
“I want to begin today by expressing my condolences to the family of a person I knew well,” Trump told his Cabinet in remarks widely circulated soon after her death. “She worked for me on numerous occasions. She was terrific—Aretha Franklin—on her passing. She brought joy to millions of lives and her extraordinary legacy will thrive and inspire many generations to come.”
Let that sink in a moment.
“She worked for me.”
Really??? That’s the central point of Trump’s so-called tribute to Aretha?
It’s not even remotely true, of course, but the real significance is what the comment says about Trump, and by extension, the people who support and admire him.
Aretha Franklin played some concerts at Trump hotel/casinos. That is hardly “working for” Donald Trump. That’s like saying Picasso was an employee of the Prado, or Prince was in the NFL because he played at the Super Bowl. Or me claiming the Fire Department “works for me” because they came to check a gas leak in my building.
Trump’s insistence on that framing of his brief path-crossings with Aretha Franklin speaks to his infantile desire to be the boss of everybody…..even in their own obituary, which, as with all matters on heaven and earth, he somehow managed to make about himself.
As David Graham wrote in The Atlantic, Trump cannot conceive of any higher compliment than being graced with his presence. In Trump’s mind, everyone lives only to serve him and bask in his wonderfulness…..and that goes double for women and people of color. (That same disrespect was reflected this week in his clash with Pelosi.)
To give it the most generous possible interpretation, if Trump was merely acknowledging that he had met Ms. Franklin in person (as he did when memorializing G.H.W. Bush) he could have stopped with “a person I knew well.” That was a lie itself, but at least it wasn’t also a despicable racist dig that placed himself in the superior position and Aretha in a servile one.
His disrespect for the Queen of Soul is of a piece with his well-documented contempt for African-Americans in general, and African-American women in particular. Would we expect any less from a rich, obscenely entitled 72-year-old right winger, raised in privilege by a father who played footsie with the Klan and was sued by the federal government for racial discrimination bad enough that Woody Guthrie wrote a song about it?
We know that Trump is very bad at the ceremonial aspects of his job, particularly when it comes to honoring other human beings or comforting his fellow man in times of grief, and the reason why is clear: because he lacks even the tiniest kernel of human empathy. He relates to others only as servants to his own mythical magnificence. His discomfort with sickness and death and inability to display—or even fake—normal human compassion as consoler-in-chief is yet another way he is manifestly unfit for the duties of the office he unaccountably holds.
Trump’s epoch-shattering pettiness and his astonishing unwillingness to set aside personal differences even when honoring the dead (see also John McCain) is a stark genetic marker of his malignant narcissism. The best he’s done—at George H.W. Bush’s recent funeral—is quietly sulk because he’s not the center of attention…..and in that case only because the Bush family cleverly managed to hem him in with some jiu-jitsu. If Trump fits the famous description of a person who wants to be the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral, all I can say is that there are millions of Americans who are with him on the latter count at least.
Even without the pointed barbs that characterized McCain’s funeral—the same weekend as Aretha’s, as it happened—Trump inevitably suffered by comparison at Bush’s memorial as he sat petulantly in the front row while the nation listened to tribute after tribute to the basic personal decency of “41.” (Though we ought not to forgive or forget the role the Bush dynasty played in giving us Trump in the first place, from Willie Horton to the invasion of Iraq.) I don’t exactly know how any of that fits in with Trump’s refusal to recite the Apostles’ Creed. I suspect he thinks Apostles Creed is Carl Weathers’ grandson.
Trump, of course, is not alone in his condescending attitude toward a group of people he is wont to call “the blacks.” Playing right into one of the worst and oldest stereotypes of dumbass white people, Fox infamously misidentified Aretha when it broadcast news of her passing, running a photo of Patti LaBelle.
I don’t have the column inches—or patience—to list all of Trump’s public displays of racism (for starters, see: NFL), but one of the worst and most telling of them remains his attacks on the so-called Central Park Five, the young black men convicted of assaulting, raping, and brutalizing a white female jogger in 1989. The five men variously spent from six to thirteen years in prison before being exonerated by DNA evidence. (A serial rapist imprisoned for other crimes confessed and was proven to be the attacker.) Back in ’89, Trump, then just a private citizen and douchebag-about-town, took out full-page ads in four New York City newspapers calling for the reinstatement of the death penalty in New York state, with the Central Park jogger case the obvious subtext. (Just in case you thought racism, birtherism, and sticking his big fat nose where it doesn’t belong were new things for Don.)
But much more shocking is the fact that as recently as 2016 Trump continued to insist that the Central Park Five were guilty and ought to be in prison, even though they’ve been indisputably proven innocent and another man confirmed as the perpetrator.
I don’t even know where to begin with that demonstration of unmitigated racism, barbarity, and wholesale contempt for justice and the rule of law. I can only say that it’s appalling that it hasn’t gotten more attention, even as I understand that “outrage fatigue” has never gotten an aerobic workout like the one the Trump era is giving it.
So compared to shit like that, Trump’s megalomania and racism in insulting Aretha Franklin is neither surprising nor near the top of the list of his worst moments. But it’s still galling, especially when deployed in reference to an artist of her gifts. I don’t think anyone expected soaring, poetic rhetoric from the Donald in memorializing one of the greatest and most influential singers of the past century, but what he did say was even worse than I anticipated. Once again, every time I think he’s hit rock bottom, Trump has managed to surprise me by beginning to dig.
That’s why “She worked for me” has stuck with me, amid all of Trump’s other appalling turns of phrase. It’s no news flash that Donald Trump is a racist, a misogynist, and a small, small man. But every once in a while we get a perfect little economic encapsulation of all those things.
So there you have it. Trumpism—your one-stop shop for racism, sexism, classism, and narcissism.
Rest in peace, Aretha. When comes such another?

Aubrey Plaza - June 19, 2017
Recent Conan appearances:
March 15, 2017 -
Her role as Lenny Busker on Legion (link)
The role of Lenny was originally meant to be played by a middle-aged man.
At the time she met with Legion writer, Noah Hawley, she had just recently torn her ACL and was on crutches, which potentially contributed to Hawley’s perception that she could play an angry male character.
When Legion first premiered, she had just finished a day of filming and went to a bar to watch the episode, but no one around her recognized she was in the show.
Red Hair (link)
For her film Ingrid Goes West, she had to die her hair red, which then prompted her to learn various facts about redheads, including the fact that redheads turn into vampires after they die.
Playing a Page (link)
Plaza played an NBC page on the show “30 Rock.”
Her role on the show was to introduce a tour group to the set of Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
Plaza was a page in real life for SNL and NBC, so for her 30 Rock appearance she wore the same uniform.
June 27, 2016
Her Birthday (June 26) (link)
Plaza hates her birthday because it makes her feel depressed about what she has not and will never get to do.
During her 2016 birthday, she watched one episode of Game of Thrones without watching any more from the series.
When she was on Anna Faris is Unqualified, there was a Parks and Rec reunion and she got birthday cupcakes.
Singing and Dancing (link)
She was forced to do a closing musical number for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.
She hates singing and dancing.
During her dance training, she remembered that when she was young, she competed in Irish River Dancing.
She attributes her awkwardness to the fact that she was trained in a dance that requires a straight face and minimal arm movement.
Mike and Dave Pranks (link)
When Mike and Dave was being shot, there were still real guests staying at the hotel at which the film was shot.
Plaza’s co-star, Sugar Lyn Beard, thought it would be entertaining to scare guests with gruesome makeup, which led to the production team being warned that cast members cannot harass hotel guests.
April 3, 2015
Audrey’s Mom + Airbnb (link)
Plaza’s mom booked an Airbnb, but the owner of the apartment failed to mention that he would be sleeping on the couch.
Her mom still wanted to stay there because the owner offered to take her bungee jumping.
Religious Upbringing (link)
Plaza grew up very Catholic.
She has a memory of seeing a seven-foot tall Easter Bunny placing Easter presents in her home.
Hormonal and Spiritual Unrest (link)
Plaza had recently been finding lots of bug bites all over her body.
Attributes bug bites to a “spiritual problem” and to the fact that she’s been “really hormonal lately”
Another way she’s noticed her hormones acting up is that she found herself repeatedly singing the words “kill” and “die.”
August 14, 2014
Summer (link)
Aubrey was the maid of honor for a wedding and was tasked with buying all the party supplies.
She purchased exclusively penis paraphernalia, including a cake that was so graphic, the show couldn’t air it.
Her mom opened up the box of penis paraphernalia and “loved it.”
For the party, two random strangers from the street were hired to be strippers.
Abdominal Injury (link)
While she was shooting, Plaza had to carry an oven on her back, which caused her to rip her abdominal wall.
She got her injury treated in London while she was shooting Parks and Rec by an “old-timey” English doctor.
Photobomb (link)
Photo recently emerged of Aubrey photobombing Katy Perry and Hillary Clinton.
Plaza joked that after the photobomb, Hillary confided in her that she was running for president.
February 12, 2014
Hugging (link)
Conan addressed a paparazzi photo of Aubrey and Amy Poehler hugging with Aubrey’s legs wrapped around Amy’s.
Plaza explaiined that she has a tendency to wrap her legs around people when she hugs them, which led to her grandpa calling her “Monkey” and giving her a monkey toy every year for Christmas.
Chris Bosh (link)
Plaza frequently tweets about her obsession with Miami Heat player Chris Bosh.
When he had a cameo on Parks and Rec, she hid in his trailer in hopes of meeting him.
She thought it would be funny to disguise herself as his hair dresser, but he didn’t recognize her, so she actually styled his hair.
Posted a photo of her and Bosh on her Twitter hoping he would reply.
Apocalypse Preparation (link)
Plaza recently shot a zombie movie, which prompted Conan to ask if she had plans in the event of a zombie apocalypse.
Plaza admitted she is always prepared for an apocalypse because she sleeps with a dagger on her bedside table.
Plaza conducts a weekly shanking drill in the event her home is invaded by a zombie or a murderer.
She likes to surround herself with people who have skills that would be useful in an apocalypse, so she gifted her boyfriend helicopter lessons for his birthday.
Conan offered to take flying lessons for her.
Other talk show appearances (sorted in chronological order)
Late Night with Seth Meyers (March 1, 2017)
Legion (link)
She had to wear a harness when her character died.
Inspired by her superhero show, Plaza said her superpower would be that when she ate something extremely spicy, her head would explode.
Legion is part of X-men universe.
One of her inspirations for her character, Lenny, was David Bowie.
The middle name of her character is Cornflakes, so she jokes that Lenny Cornflakes Busker sounds like the name of a stripper.
The creator of Legion also created the FX show Fargo.
The Little Hours and Ingrid Goes West (link)
Produced and starred in the films, which will both be featured at Sundance.
Researched for her role as a nun in The Little Hours by reading a Bible that she stole from her hotel room.
One of the producers of Ingrid Goes West sought out a condemned house for them to shoot in.
Late Show with Stephen Colbert (February 24, 2017) (link)
Plaza has two rescue dogs named Stevie and Frankie, and she joked that she likes Frankie more.
Plaza attended Catholic school from Kindergarten through twelfth grade.
Her role as a nun in The Little Hours was especially fun for her because she “loves uniforms” ever since she wore one at Catholic school.
Plaza was a member of 4-H, which is a program for kids that encourages knowledge of agricultural skills.
Despite growing up in Wilmington, Delaware, which is a city, Aubrey has had farm experiences, such as sheering a sheep.
Plaza was about to receive Alumni Medallion award for her participation in 4-H.
Late Night with Seth Meyers (January 22, 2016) (link)
In the movie Dirty Grandpa, Plaza was initially asked to play the love interest of Zac Efron, but she was hellbent on securing the part of DeNiro’s love interest.
For her Dirty Grandpa audition, Plaza threw out the script, said a bunch of dirty things into the camera, and then flashed her butt.
Although Dirty Grandpa is the story of a romance between a 70 year old man and a 20 year old woman, Plaza sees the movie as a love story where DeNiro has “met his match.”
Before the movie started, DeNiro gave the entire cast a bottle of wine and a encouraging note. In order to repay him for this gift, Plaza gave him a book of Zen Buddhism with a raunchy picture of her inside.
When Plaza and DeNiro shot their love scene, her bra had been rigged to pop off for a scene that was scrapped last minute, so as soon as DeNiro made a move towards her breasts, her bra flung off.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! (January 20, 2016)
ACL and Wine Tasting (link)
Plaza tore her ACL playing basketball and initially had to be in a wheelchair.
For her gay best friend’s bachelor party, she went to a wine tasting in a wheelchair, and her friend was wearing a Santa suit, so the other wine tasting guests were afraid of their party.
Robert DeNiro’s Nipples (note from author: That is the first time I’ve ever gotten to use that as the title for a bullet point. It’s a big day.) (link)
The day she filmed her sex scene with Robert DeNiro lasted nine hours.
The director of Dirty Grandpa instructed her to suck on DeNiro’s nipples, but as soon as she tried it, DeNiro’s agent informed the director did not like his “nipple region” toyed with.
One of her proudest moments of shooting was when DeNiro complimented her acting after she was instructed to throw up and try to kiss him.
The Late Late Show with James Corden (March 31, 2015) (link)
Plaza studied abroad during college in Ghana at a documentary film program.
Her roommate in Ghana was a legitimate pirate named Jenny who was “straight off a boat from the Caribbean” and was always looking for treasure.
Miscellaneous interviews and clips
Gold Derby (June 14, 2017) (link)
Plaza was skeptical of the show Legion at first because she did not know where her character would end up.
Plaza was unfamiliar with the comic book Legion was based on before she started filming the show.
Plaza wanted to play the “villain that you love or that you like to hate.”
Plaza admits that sometimes playing Lenny Busker felt like playing completely different characters on totally different shows.
The Wrap (May 16, 2017) (link)
Before she was famous, Plaza performed improv at Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (UCB) in New York.
Some of the people she met at UCB included Aziz Ansari, Nick Kroll, Bobby Moinyhan, Donald Glover, Ben Schwartz, Kate McKinnon, Jenny Sate, Matt Walsh, Abby Jacobson, Zach Woods, Ellie Kemper, and T.J. Miller.
Off Camera with Sam Jones (August 12, 2016) (link)
Aubrey thinks she is the “worst talk show guest ever.”
She gets very uncomfortable going from a pre-interview to pretending that she’s having the conversation for the very first time.
She “can’t tell” when she’s making people uncomfortable.
Another unsettling part of talk shows for her is the fact that she has to be herself and she cannot perform as a character or a persona.
Her work in Dirty Grandpa was especially challenging because she had to make sure their unconventional relationship didn’t come across as “disgusting.”
Robert DeNiro was initially scared of her because of her character’s makeup, but as soon as he saw her not in character, he warmed up to her.
Teen Hag Trailer (February 10, 2008) (link)
Spoof of Teen Wolf trailer, where Plaza plays a high school girl, who transforms into a hag.
Despite her gruesome appearance, the hag earns praise and popularity from her high school peers.
John Milhiser also stars in the trailer.
