I remember seeing someone wonder why no one does literary analysis of popular music. I don't have very many mutuals, but if it was one of y'all then this post is for you.
Title And Registration by Death Cab For Cutie communicates the mental and emotional state of its narrator with such efficiency and precision that I cannot let it go unnoticed any longer. The song, read literally, is about a person being stopped by the police and looking for their title and registration papers in the glove compartment and finding a picture of their ex.
The song is absolutely brilliant for communicating structurally how much the narrator doesn't want to think about their ex. The song starts with an entire verse that is the narrator mentally avoiding the topic. They talk about how you never find gloves in the glove compartment and that it should be called something else. The sentiment is corny and cliched and delivered here with the utmost sincerity. The way that the narrator is avoiding his feelings is shown by the song avoiding the point for the entire first verse. After this verse the narrator admits that he found "souvenirs of better times". The song goes on to get more explicit with each verse until the narrator admits that they stay awake all night thinking about this relationship.
Death Cab are pretty good at starting songs small and building them up into subtle narratives, but this is probably my favorite example. Every line down to the title itself adds to the narrative. Title And Registration gives more context as to why he's looking for a legal document in the rain. After all the song never outright says he's been pulled over but it's heavily implied. In the end the song manages to paint a picture of a person breaking down in the rain in front of a cop because he accidentally saw a picture of his ex. It's such a potent picture that is only gleaned by coming at the song sideways. And yet the song leads you sideways into this interpretation as if it were obvious.

Today has been so mega stressful I just
Smacks head against wall
#Shima speaks#Okay. Okay okay okay storytime#SO as many of you know I bought a new car back in April. Almost May.#I didn't get the title registration card in the mail until like June#So I registered my car and bought the plates. 100% bought the plates I KNOW I bought the plates#Fast forward to now it is August and still no plates in the mail. No notification that they've been mailed or received or ANYTHING#SO I'm sitting here going hey where are my plates my temporary tags have expired on my car and I could get ticketed for that#I decide you know what I'll go to the DMV directly and get this sorted out. Fucking hate the DMV all my homies hate the DMV#But what can you do you know. Idk where the plates are.#I was very worried bc the mailroom in my apartment was broken into so somebody could have stolen the plates out of my mailbox#And I'd be none the wiser!! Bc I haven't received any sort of notification that they were delivered!#So I decide to go to the DMV right but my coworker tells me that they don't do walk ins anymore. They only see you by appointment#The next appointment wasn't available until August 22nd. LIKE. THREE WEEKS FROM NOW#So I book the appointment. And I send them an email going like hey uh I kinda need new temp tags while I'm waiting to be seen abt my plates#And they email me back going oh lol this is the wrong county you need to go to blah blah blah county office#So I'm like jesus christ okay I'll go to the correct county office. LUCKILY they have walkins so I drove over there today#I walked in and the girl working the customer service counter asks me what I need and I say hey I'm having issues getting my plates#I hand her my title registration card and she looks it up and goes oh lol we have your plates. They were returned#APPARENTLY they fucked up my address and didn't include the apartment number on the package so it got returned to them#SO THEY'VE JUST HAD MY FUCKING PLATES FOR A MONTH AND A HALF AND DIDN'T TELL ME. NO EMAIL NO PHONE CALL NOTHING IN THE MAIL#The girl goes into the back and grabs my plates. Thank god I finally have my fucking plates#LUCKILY I didn't actually have to wait in line she just grabbed them and I didn't need to get a ticket to see someone at the counter#But oh my god. SO fucking stressful dude.#I hate adulting <3#Also my computer had a hacking scare so there's that too#But that's a whole other can of worms#Lies down I'm fucking exhausted bro

Goodbye, good riddance, and goodnight to this place. I'll miss the memories, but I won't miss the pain. I'm heading east and I'm not looking back, but for the good times.

Title and Registration
Song by Death Cab for Cutie

"'...Cause behind its door, there's nothing to keep my fingers warm
And all I find are souvenirs from better times
Before the gleam of your taillights fading east
To find yourself a better life..."

so like as a kid i really liked transatlanticism by death cab for cutie but my favorite song was title and registration. and so i was in a failing relationship circa 2020 and i was like what if i listened to transatlanticism. not bc i was in a failing relationship but bc it was quarantine and i was feeling a little nostalgic. and i heard title and registration and i like SOBBED and it was like so fuckingreal. and then we broke up like a week later. and we are actually so much friends now so its good. anyways. now title and registration makes me sooo happy and joyful like it makes me smile like a crazy person its such a good songlike for real Theres no blame. for how our love did slowly fade. and now that its gone. its like it wasnt there at all

I'm back again w more music and bc I also go by saph online and found that funny bc I've been following for a bit and only just now realized that. I also am not huge on Will Wood and my bsf loves him so so so much. Romeo and Juliet.
Anyway
Mumford and Sons isn't exactly a niche band and you've probably heard their song Little Lion Man (if you haven't, it's not my main recommendation but it IS good). Their album Wilder Mind holds a lot of good memories despite being an album about painful love, and so therefore is an album that makes me feel catharsis when I'm hurting and joy when I'm not. Fun dichotomy! The song I recommend is from this album, Broad Shouldered Beasts. It's one of the softer ones- I had a hard time choosing which one to recommend so I picked this one bc it's 4:20 minutes long lol
Also, unrelated but also good, May I Have This Dance by Francis and the Lights ft. Chance The Rapper
omg twinning <3 also tbf i'm pretty sure at least half of this website is in love with will wood sdfkgjbkj. and yeah i've heard little lion man! in fact i'm quite a fan of Tonight Alive's cover of it. broad shouldered beasts is nice! a little slow but i like the end particularly when it picks up. and the 2nd song is nice too!!
for these i give you one of my favorite songs from a musician who makes mostly songs about painful love- Crooked Teeth by Death Cab for Cutie, and ONE DANCE by Simon M
