TOP FILMS 2019: 20 films

1/ PARASITE. Bong Joon-ho

De film en film, le coréen s’affirme comme le plus grand raconteur d’histoire de son époque. A la fois auteurisant et grand public, politique et burlesque, gore et esthétique, Parasite est un film comme les américains ne savent (ne peuvent, ne veulent) plus en faire. Succès critique et public mérité et encourageant !

2/ MARRIAGE STORY Noah Baumbach

Réalisateur culte depuis Les Berkman se Séparent et Frances Ha, Baumbach doit cependant lui aussi se réfugier sur Netflix pour sortir ses films. Après Roma en 2018, l’opérateur prouve qu’on peut lui faire confiance pour créer encore du cinéma noble et délicat. Le duo Driver/Johansson est fascinant, le récit de leur séparation filmé avec justesse et force. Du grand art.

3/ MIDSOMMAR. Ari Aster

En 2 films le réalisateur américain s’impose dans la cour des grands avec 2 expériences dont on ne ressort pas indemne. Midsommar, sur un sujet casse gueule (et qui rappelle The Wicker Man) reste longtemps dans les esprits et prouve que l’on peut encore surprendre et fasciner à Hollywood en 2019. La version de 3h sortie en Blu Ray en remet une couche. On attend la suite avec impatience.

4/ Il ETAIT UNE FOIS A HOLLYWOOD. Quentin Tarantino

Hollywood justement, dont l’un de ses fervents admirateurs se plait à réécrire l’histoire avec son talent de conteur hors-pair. Depuis Les 8 Salopards, son cinéma est moins pop, plus adulte et l’on ne peut pas penser une seconde qu’il arrêtera après le prochain. S’il est depuis 25 ans l’un des réalisateurs les plus fascinants, il dirige ici de main de maitre les 2 derniers géants d’Hollywood: Di Caprio et Pitt. La concurrence est très loin derrière.

5/ BORDER Ali Abbasi

Un des plus gros chocs visuels et sensoriels de cette année. Border mélange les genres, contes de fées, thriller, fantastique et film naturaliste avec une force et une grâce qui vous poursuivent longtemps. Un hymne à la différence et une réflexion sur notre rapport à la nature. Inspiré par une nouvelle de John Lindqvist, qui avait écrit Morse...

6/ THE LIGHTHOUSE Robert Eggers

Après la claque The Witch, Eggers continue et creuse le sillon d’un cinéma horrifique, tordu et sans concession. Noir et blanc, format carré et bande son obsédante pour une descente (ou une montée) vers la folie, magnifiquement mise en scène. Pattinson confirme son statut de nouveau grand, Dafoe est toujours parfait dans un conte gothique qui cherche la lumière et tangue comme une chanson des Pogues.

7/ SORRY TO BOTHER YOU. Boots Riley

Une petite claque par le leader du groupe rap The Coup. Le film dynamite la mondialisation et le racisme ordinaire dans une charge punk et pop contre l’exploitation humaine et la blanchisation de la société américaine. On pense à Gondry, Spike Jonze, Idiocracy ou à l’Arme Fatale...Jouissif et culte.

8/ AD ASTRA James Gray

On aime tellement James Gray qu'on lui pardonne ici les facilités du scénario, parce qu’on se laisse quand même emporter dans son trip SF, élégant et fragile. Au-delà de certains passages un peu légers (donc curieux de la part de son réal), Gray film Brad Pitt comme jamais, tout en retenue, donnant là une 2e interprétation majeure sur l’année...Le cinéma moderne américain a besoin de James Gray et de son classicisme.

9/ LE TRAITRE Marco Bellocchio

On attendait plus grand chose du vieux Bellocchio, et plus grand chose aussi du film de mafia italienne depuis que Gomorra (le film et la série) avait redistribué les cartes ( Suburra, Piranhas, A Ciambra, Les Ames Noires...). Mais le film remet au coeur de l’actualité l’histoire du juge Falcone et d’un traitre qui su renverser la Pieuvre en bravant l’Omerta. Grande performance de Pierfranceso Favino.

10/ JOKER Todd Philips

Un film qui divise autant les critiques et forcément intéressant. Au-delà des débats sur ses propos soi-disants nauséabonds , le film dérange surtout parce qu’il met en avant un pauvre type largué, prêt à tout pour se faire remarquer, dans un pays où l’accès aux armes est un jeu d’enfants, et dans une société où les laissés pour compte se réveillent. La figure du clown est brillante, le jeu de Phoenix captivant et il ressort de cette expérience quelque chose de désespéré et fortement actuel. Que Batman et DC soit dans les parages importe finalement assez peu, que le public ait adhéré à un film aussi noir et éloigné des codes du film Marvel plus que rassurant. Pour plein de raisons, Joker est un film important.

11/ SPIDER-MAN NEW GENERATION. P.Ramsey & B.Persichetti

Si les reboot en tous genres et les films DC/Marvel ne m’intéressent plus vraiment depuis Logan, la claque reçue ici est proportionnelle à mon désintérêt pour le genre ! Ou comment dynamiter, dynamiser et redonner de l’intérêt à une franchise réchauffée ? En injectant des persos peu mis en avant (latinos et blacks), plusieurs super héros, une musique pop et rap, et mille idées d’animations à la minute, mélangeant les styles avec bonheur et intelligence. Du divertissement 4 étoiles, qui ne prend pas les spectateurs pour des cons.

12/ EL REINO. Rodrigo Sorogoyen

Après le magistral Que Dios Nos Perdone, le réal espagnol rebondit avec cette affaire de corruption au sein de la classe politique espagnole, bien malade. Ou comment suivre un ripou tout le long du film sans le rendre attachant. Une prouesse filmée caméra à l’épaule, de loin, comme pour mieux faire monter ce sentiment d’oppression et de paranoïa permanente.

13/ COMPANEROS. Alvaro Rechner

Un autre film (Uruguay/ Espagne), porté par Antonio de la Torre. Le film revient sur les années 70 et la torture des opposants politiques en Uruguay. On y suit le parcours de 3 d’entre eux, enfermés pendant 12 ans...Fort et captivant, à rapprocher de Buenos Aires 77...

14/ TRAINE SUR LE BITUME. S.Craig Zahler

Réalisateur culte depuis Bone Tomahawk, Zahler poursuit son parcours discret, tous ses films sortant en DVD chez nous. Auteur, scénariste, compositeur, il signe un cinéma personnel et percutant, posant le décor pendant la première heure avant de faire basculer ses histoires dans une déflagration de violence crue et inédite. Ici une histoire de braquage foireux et d’âmes brisées, portée par un Mel Gibson ténébreux à souhait et un Vince Vaughn déjà à l’oeuvre dans Section 99. Un film froid, implacable et hors-normes qui a tout pour devenir culte.

15/ UNE VIE CACHEE. Terrence Malick

Parce qu’on espérait un éclair après les exercices de styles et les purges précédentes, parce qu’il y a souvent plus de cinéma dans un plan de Malick que dans tous les derniers Marvel, parce que cet homme reste un des plus grands filmeurs de la nature, parce que sur 3h il y en a au moins 2 de magnifiques...Oui, c’est répétitif, oui c’est trop long, mais Malick est revenu déjà à quelque chose qu’il semblait avoir perdu depuis la Ligne Rouge : faire un film, pas juste une succession de plans, fussent-ils réussis...

16/ THE OLD MAN & THE GUN. David Lowery

Après Ghost Story, le réal américain change de style et embarque Robert Redford dans un film touchant et gracile qui confirme la facilité du réalisateur pour raconter des histoires sensibles et à fleur de peau. Redford, en braqueur sénile, tiré d’une histoire vraie, assume son âge, se revoie à la grande époque de The Chase et signe là une des ses dernières apparitions.

17/ BROOKLYN AFFAIRS. Edward Norton

Norton aura mis 20 ans à faire son film, dans la grande tradition du film noir américain. Mais là où De Palma (Le Dahlia Noir) ou Ben Affleck ( Live By Night), se sont plantés en beauté, il tire un film sérieux et personnel, porté par une bande son jazz du meilleur effet. On y entend aussi Thom Yorke. Norton joue également le rôle principal, un privé atteint du Syndrome de la Tourette, et Dieu si l’on n’a pas l’habitude de voir de tels personnages au cinéma. Mention spéciale à Alec Baldwin en méchant de service contrôlant les biens immobiliers de la ville. Belle réussite.

18/ MARWEN. Robert Zemeckis

Grand faiseur d’images et amoureux des effets techniques novateurs (Roger Rabbit), Zemeckis adapte la vie de Mark Hogancamp, amnésique depuis une agression qui recrée chez lui une ville de la 2e guerre mondiale qu’il peuple de jouets et de poupées...Porté par une technologie incroyable et un Steve Carrell rarement aussi touchant, le film aborde des sujets éprouvants (le nazisme, les agressions homophobes, la maladie mentale...) dans un divertissement adulte qui ne pouvait décemment guère plaire au grand public...

19/ UN GRAND VOYAGE VERS LA NUIT. Bi Gan

A 30 ans, le cinéaste chinois signe son 2e film, et une prouesse visuelle impressionnante. Après une première heure esthétiquement incroyable, le film bascule dans un plan séquence d’1 heure, en 3D...Réflexion sur les rêves, les souvenirs, l’amour et le cinéma, le film de Bi Gan ne laisse pas insensible et confire la naissance d’une grand réalisateur dans une année forte pour le cinéma chinois ( Le Lac aux oies sauvages, Le Eternels, So Long My Son, Face à la nuit, An Elephant Sitting Still...)

20/ MEURS MONSTRE MEURS. Alejandro Fadel

Le cinéma argentin a souvent donné de merveilleux ovnis, mais celui-ci aura pu en dérouter certains. Entre polar et film fantastique ( on n’est pas loin du mexicain Amat Escalante et sa Région Sauvage). On n’y parle de femmes décapitées, de sexualité, de voix intérieures...Un film curieux et déstabilisant, mais qui marque les esprits. Sans la fin grotesque, le film aurait pu espérer mieux en terme de classement...

Inicié esta canción en mis años de Estudiante, a los 23 años. La escribí entonces hasta el coro... pero en cuanto la retomé para compartirla me percaté que solo había nombrado a mis referentes y hermanos Masintin ... no a las Yanantin...

En mi recorrido músical, como no nombrar a Qhari Alvarado, Alain Dlugosz, Sergio Scarcerieau o “Popy”, Hiram Muñoz alias “coto”, Mathieu Minne...

En mi camino espiritual, además de Qhari, Alain y Mathieu, a Camilo...

Pero seguí caminando y era demasiado injusto no nombrar a personas demasiado importantes en mi camino ... así que ajuste un poco la canción...

Así se sumaron Ariel Maidana, Hernan Kitsutani quien me reveló algo del Tao Oriental y sobre todo el Ande que en gran parte se lo debo a Jaime Araoz Chacon y a Erika Chavez. Lamento no haber tenido mas espacio para nombrarlos pero valoró al mas alto nivel los espacios compartidos con ellos ...

Lamento igualmente no haber podido nombrar a Spinetta y a mis amigos del Barco Borracho (Kike Izaguirre y Jorge Díaz-Untiveros)

En mi sendero intelectual y espiritual, definitivamente debería nombrar a Norberto Bobbio “Droite et Gauche. Essai sur une distinction politique”, Harriet Beinfield "Entre el cielo y la tierra Los cinco elementos en la medicina china”, Yuval Noah Harari con su “Sapiens, una breve historia de la humanidad”, a los siete autores de “la racionalidad Andina” (Editorial Mantaro) y sobre todo a Jiddu Krishnamurti “Liberese del Pasado”.

Mas allá de mi familia y las compañeras que compartieron mi camino ... mi camino nunca habría sido equilibrado sin las hermanas Yanantin que acompañaron mis pasos en la época que escribí las primeras estrofas de esta canción ... Por eso nombro en prioridad a Hania Perez del Cuellar, Vanessa Touzard, Marisa Escalante, Sophie Ibañez, Maria Laura Moreno sainz ...

Pero sin duda debería nombrar igualmente a Erika Chavez, Raquel Vargas y Magali Avila... un gran amiga y Alter-Ego, mas allá de los pasos afectivos compartidos (Semana 8 - Notas de Harry Haller).

A todas estas compañeras y compañeros de mis pasos y vuelos, que fueron y son parte de mi equilibrio y acompañan mis conversaciones de Soledad ...

3 libros para leer en esta cuarentena

El confinamiento nos ha brindado a varios privilegiados como yo, la posibilidad de retomar lecturas que quedaron pendientes. Comparto con ustedes una breve reseña de 3 obras que he tenido la oportunidad de revisar y que me han parecido sumamente interesantes: Desde el ámbito de la teoría económica, pasando por la ciencia ficción hasta la antropología. Cada una de ellas con enseñanzas valiosas sobre el mundo que nos rodea, nuestro origen como humanos y nuestra capacidad para crear mundos inimaginables.

1. Historia mínima del neoliberalismo.

Autor: Fernando Escalante

Esta es una obra recomendada a todos aquellos que tienen interés en conocer de manera relativamente sencilla cómo es que funciona el sistema en el que vivimos, cuál es su origen y su evolución a través del tiempo y cómo la proliferación de las nuevas tecnologías han ayudado a la consolidación de este sistema en nuestras vidas diarias, particularmente del capital financiero. El autor establece un punto esencial: El neoliberamismo no solo como un fundamento económico, sino como un sistema universal de coordinación social que tiene impacto en la cultura, filosofía y ética de la sociedad en la que vivimos.

Es un texto sencillo aunque con cierta carga de tecnicismos económicos. No obstante, me parece que en lo general es entendible para quienes no tienen nociones de este tipo. Especialmente recomendado para aquellos quienes temen la eventual llegada del “socialismo” o “comunismo” en nuestro contexto nacional, se darán cuenta que es demasiado complicado, yo diría que imposible, llegar a esta situación.

Me parece relevante para entender que la sociedad a la que pertenecemos no se mueven a partir de hechos aislados o creados de manera natural, sino que corresponden a una lógica impuesta por ciertas organizaciones y actores mundiales y que nadie, absolutamente nadie, escapa a ella.

2. Luna roja.

Autor: Kim Stanley Robinson

Obra de ciencia ficción que se desarrolla en un escenario futurista en el que China se encuentra a la delantera en la carrera por la colonización de la luna, por encima de Estados Unidos y Europa. En tal contexto, se desenvuelve una historia interesante: Un asesinato de un alto funcionario chino a manos de un trabajador de origen estadounidense, quien huye en una travesía por la luna y la tierra acompañado de una joven embarazada, hija de un alto funcionario del gran país rojo, quien podría dar a luz al primer humano nacido en la luna.

Me pareció interesante pues nos da una muestra de cómo podría ser la conquista lunar, y al leerlo, podemos darnos cuenta que no es tan descabellado pensar que es algo que podría pasar en poco tiempo, tal vez alcancemos a verlo: Obras de ingeniería, el poder del capital financiero para la planificación del futuro de la humanidad y su impacto en la tierra. Ofrece ciertas explicaciones curiosas sobre la luna, su origen, su conexión con nuestro mundo,sus características físicas, la sensación de vivir en un lugar sin gravedad y sus implicaciones para la vida humana ahí. Francamente es impresionante dado que observamos a la luna casi en todas nuestras noches pero poco sabemos de ella.

De igual forma, en ocasiones suele ser una lectura complicada para quienes no estamos tan familiarizados con conceptos de la física, pues la obra recurre frecuentemente a estas referencias. Sin embargo, creo que es legible y sobre todo un ejercicio interesante para quienes tienen la curiosidad de buscar y entender estas referencias.

3. Sapiens: De animales a dioses. Breve historia de la humanidad

Autor: Yuval Noah Harari

Gran obra del historiador israelí en el que realiza un recorrido general de la historia de la humanidad, sus especies y cómo es que la nuestra, los sapiens, proliferó por encima de otras del mismo género “homo” con los que convivió. Es una obra que nos ubica de manera biológica e histórica sobre nuestro origen y evolución.

Para todos aquellos que les gustan los temas de la evolución biológica y social, es un efuerzo que nos brinda mucha luz para entender el por qué somos como somos. Desde nuestro aspecto físico, las capacidades que nos encumbraron como la especie dominante en la tierra, hasta la creación de realidades ficticias para facilitar la manera en que colaboramos y convivimos.

Es un seminario de biología, sociología, historia y antropología condensado en un libro, que nos hace preguntar (al menos a mi) cómo es que algo importante de repente lo dejamos en el cajón más profundo del olvido: Nuestra origen, evolución y hacia donde estaremos en un futuro.

El autor reta a la memoria de nuestra especie, los sapiens. Nos remite hacia nuestro lado más oscuro: La idea de que desde nuestro origen, nos hemos dedicado a modificar el entorno en beneficio único de nuestra especie, a tal grado de llevar a la extinsión a nuestros parientes más cercanos. Y ante tal realidad, preferimos escondernos en la desmemoria y continuar con nuestra vida diaria sin importar qué consecuencias tenemos con ello, tal y cómo los primeros sapiens lo hicieron. Somos la síntesis de múltiples determinantes históricamente construidas.

Desde la primera revolución cognitiva, la manipulación del fuego, la capacidad de “chismear” como factor clave en la evolución de nuestro sistema complejo de comunicación, la modificación del nómada recolector al agricultor tradicional y la falsa idea de la domesticación de ciertas plantas en beneficio del humano hasta el ideal del super hombre, todo ello en esta obra que a mi gusto, debe ser una lectura obligada para quienes pretendan entender de manera profunda nuestro recorrido en este mundo.

Cada una de estas obras trata, evidentemente, de temas diferentes pero que al final, son complementarias. ¿Qué cosa en este mundo no tiene conexión con otra? Una condición fundamental del método comparado es que todo es parangonable en la medida en que se encuentren las categorías indicadas para ello.

Un festival para todos

Música, gastronomía y opciones para los pequeños se reúnen en esta tercera edición

Con The Beatles como temática para este año, el Roxy Fest sigue pisando fuerte y se confirma como uno de los favoritos en la región y en nuestro país. Hay muchos elementos que lo hacen diferente, pero su atención en la posibilidad de llevar a los niños al encuentro con actividades para ellos es uno de los más destacados. Las bandas al tope del cartel estuvieron al tope de la cima por los años noventa y se mantienen vigentes aunque con menos resplandor. Tampoco falta el apoyo a la voces emergentes con una selección de propuestas destacadas y que dan de que hablar. Un día para convivir en familia y con los sonidos que han formado parte de nuestras vidas ahora en vivo y a todo volumen.

Jade Bird

Apenas con su EP Something American y el próximo lanzamiento de su disco completo en abril, Jade Bird ya se vuelve constante en el medio con gira alrededor del mundo y en festivales tan importantes como el nuestro. Para la joven, esta experiencia “ha sido increíble, todo lo que pueda decir no describe el camino que he tenido en los últimos años, y no me queda nada más que continuar, prepararme para los conciertos, los festivales y las giras en espera de que escuchen mi nuevo disco”.

Esta primavera presentará nuevas canciones, en las cuales tomó el tiempo necesario para darles vida, “quería mostrar todo el aprendizaje que tuve en las giras y todo lo que he evolucionado musicalmente. Antes me gustaba escribir todos los días, al menos ideas, que pudieran convertirse en canciones, pero en este momento eso es un poco complicado.

Sin embargo me gusta pensar en un concepto, lo que encerrará esas canciones. Tener una disciplina para estar atenta cuando llegue la inspiración porque a veces nunca sabes cuándo sucederá”. Agregó que confía en su crecimiento desde su EP debut, “en la composición, en la producción, y ser humilde para reconocer que aún me falta mucho por aprender”.

Adicional a la música, considerada una mezcla entre rock y folk, las letras juegan una parte muy importante. “Creo que son muy directas y mucho viene de mis experiencias, de mis relaciones personales, mis relaciones de amistad, y sé que no existe una víctima real pero esas emociones existen y creo que se pueden compartir sin problema, pero todo lo que sucede se convierte en una inspiración”, agregó.

El éxito de sus temas la lleva a nuevos públicos y lugares, “no sabes cómo reaccionará la gente, pero tienes muchas ganas de compartirlas así que eso es lo más importante”. Temas como “Lottery”, “Furious”, “Uh Huh” y “Love has all been done before” tendrán eco en su primera visita a la ciudad.

Les Deuxluxes

Anne France Meyer y Étienne Barry llamaron la atención desde su debut Springtime Devil por 2016 y los siguientes sencillos, tales como “You´re dead” y “Diable du printemps” confirmaron su valía, con una propuesta definida por guitarras rabiosas y una voz poderosa. En entrevista con Milenio Jalisco, Anne, una de los dos integrantes de la banda, que hace labor en guitarra y voz, mientras que su compañero toca la batería pero ambos logran dar vida “al ruido de cinco o cuatro personas en el escenario”, compartió.

Confirmó que se encuentran en proceso de composición de las canciones para su siguiente álbum, “después de esta entrevista iremos por el campo a asolearnos un poquito en la nieve y trabajar juntos en nuevas canciones que son más experimentales que las otras”. Su éxito ya los llevó de gira más allá de Canadá, y preguntarle sobre ¿cuál ha sido su país favorito? le resulta complicado. “Es difícil responder porque cada país que visitamos es tan diferente y tan rico que tenemos la tremenda oportunidad de compartir con nuevo público y es como empezar de nuevo cada vez, siempre nos encontramos con sorpresas. Es una vida rica y vibrante, todos los viajes forman nuestra visión del mundo y nuestro gusto musical. Tenemos la oportunidad de escuchar nuevas cosas casi todo el día, no es una rutina, es una experiencia diversa y la tratamos con alma y corazón abierto. No es una vida fácil pero es una vida rica”, dijo emocionada.

Escuchar sus temas nos remonta a una película, como la banda sonora de un título emocionante y muchas veces lleno de acción, algo de lo que ellos están conscientes. “Tenemos una visión muy cinemática de la música, del arte visual. Tenemos eso en mente, un video, un concepto para cada obra, que es independiente, es su propio mundo en esta galaxia.

Y sí, estamos conscientes de eso porque somos amantes del cine, la ópera, de obras más grandes que la naturaleza y es un poco como aplicamos nuestra técnica a la formación minimalista de nuestra instrumentación, pensamos más grande de lo que somos”. Para finalizar agregó que “México, es increíble, el público es muy generoso, abierto, es siempre un placer”.

311 alistan su presentación en el festival Roxy

Además de su presentación, el grupo tiene un nuevo disco en puerta y una línea de cerveza

Dentro del cuantioso line-up con el que el festival Roxy celebra su tercera edición encontramos a 311, agrupación que rock alternativo que fusiona ritmos como el reggae, rap, heavy, funk entre otros. Los estadounidenses llegarán por primera vez a Guadalajara con una presentación que incluirá los éxitos que han marcado una carrera de 30 años.

Respecto a su larga trayectoria, el vocalista y guitarrista Nick Hexum comenta “estamos muy agradecidos porque la mayoría de los fans vienen y se van, así que decidimos continuar juntos y tener lo que llamo una actitud de agradecimiento, permanecer agradecidos por la amistad y la relación de trabajo que tenemos y por ser capaces de hacer esto por algunos años, sentimos que nos estamos fortaleciendo y podemos ir por otros 30 años porque es nuestro sueño, es algo que haríamos como hobby de todos modos y poder hacerlo como trabajo es algo muy especial”.

Recientemente, la agrupación anunció el lanzamiento de su nuevo documental **Enlarge the Show Detail 3 que forma parte de una trilogía de documentales sobre la banda. “Han pasado casi 15 años desde el último documental, éste se concentra en nuestra comunidad de fans y como la gente lo ha convertido en un movimiento, como una sociedad de personas positivas que son muy inclusivas y abiertas a otras personas, comenzamos con una banda, pero se ha convertido en una comunidad”.

Además, la banda se encuentra preparando su próximo material, el cual será lanzado durante el verano “sólo nos falta una canción por grabar para terminar, así que es muy emocionante”. Paralelamente, también se encuentran programando el lanzamiento de una nueva línea de cerveza, la gira que tradicionalmente realizan en Estados Unidos con sus fans y otras cuantas sorpresas.

I wish I could properly express the sheer joy I experienced drawing this page. Things are getting weird, all of the expressions were outrageously fun to figure out, and it's great seeing Noah respond to circumstances where he is not in control and, like, trying to be some kind of hero. He's a jerk, but a protective jerk. And maybe, just maybe, Lupe is correct and everything really is his fault. I've NEVER liked baby-shaped antagonists. They have always wigged me out. As a kid, any baby character bearing a slightly unusual shape never failed to give me nightmares (Baby Sinclair, Dawn of the Dead zombie baby, Dead Space Lurkers, Eraserhead, Silent Hill 4's Twins, Tiny Toons, lol). I've never liked the look of chibis for that very reason and rarely drew them unless begged by friends. They are worse than creepy Japanese girls, creepy olds, and any other age group <i>combined</i>, so although the visuals may not do it for some and might even find cherub enemies downright funny, the concept of monstrous infants come from a sickening, freaky, unexplainable place for me. I'll do my best to clue everyone in on one of my darkest fears through this little story beat. Enjoy. :) In my previous page submission I was endlessly complaining about similar-looking costuming on Marcus and Noah. I addressed it slightly by giving Marcus baggier sleeves, thicker shirt material, and changing Noah's shirt in an extremely nobody-cares kind of way. Itty bitty changes that do nothing except give this neurotic artist some additional confidence in the visuals. (Lupe will suffer some changes too. I really don't like her fake-looking shoes tbh...)

I have every right in the world to simply override the original, but it's nice to preserve previous versions any way I can, for sentimental reasons. It's why I still have all of my ancient Firesiders art up that go all the way back to 2010, as horrible and irrelevant as most of it is. Finally decided to update this when I was talking to a family member about this project (ultra rare occasion) and was using the past lineup to explain stuff, but ultimately couldn't because the characters were wrong. Well, no more. HAHA, I didn't notice this until now, but all of the extroverts are smiling and all of the introverts are either sour or looking incredulous. Character notes: Dolores I really feel like the triangle 'shape language' I picked for Dolores (top left) sorta failed and now she looks weird as a result. As for personality changes, she might've lost a marble or two while no one was looking. Past trauma was centered around her head and face which is why she became the Helmet, and so I'm thinking, ya know, brain damage. She'll still be extremely intelligent, but also a little out to lunch. Dolores has always lived with a bunch of birds. By herself. In a giant creaky estate. Why didn't I notice she was kooky before?? Ridge My favorite Ridge drawing from two lineups ago returns, whoohoo! Back to being a frat Hollywood flirt machine with an identity crisis. Noah Just a couple touchups. Still the same knucklehead. JD As mentioned in a previous submission, JD's shape language has been changed to "circle", so her portrait's been redrawn and is looking much more anatomically convincing. Apples was revisited too, dramatically giving away his paper lantern aesthetic! Tanner And like clockwork, the only person that didn't change in the slightest when it came to touchups, was Tanner. He is immutable. Eternal. Constant in his vanilla insipidness. He is best boy. However, his personality, or rather his motivations/fears/desires, have shifted somewhat. It would be "sloth" that more or less characterizes his main flaw now. He has a habit of rendering himself numb to problems, giving into platitudes, and artificially limiting himself to the comfort of supportive roles, rather than do anything that would make him appear unagreeable or separate. He is a masterclass of selling himself short, all done to achieve that peace of mind he craves. Floating with the tide may buy him contentment in the short term, but how long until he realizes that to know real peace, he must first know Truth? Madison The more I stare at the eyes, the weirder she looks. I'm stuck with it for now, I guess. Hopefully I've at least gotten the idea across: devil-may-care biker chick who shoots the world a side-eye when she's up to no good. A globetrotter since birth, she denies having ties to anyplace... or anyone. This is a weird analogy, but uh, I think of her as a Skyrim fox. Sometimes she leads her crew off the beaten path, occasionally coming across treasures, new understanding, and unspeakable dangers, but most importantly of all, no matter how lost the Firesiders get, they can count on Madison to be their unflappable pathfinder. It was during their efforts to pass through a crowd of roaring demolition derby spectators that an alien feeling gradually pulled JD Wells out of her surroundings. Anxiety? Panic? Her? She was the type to rescue wallflowers from the corners of rooms. Always a part of the in-crowd and never had a bad thought to spare toward her fellow human beings. Now, it felt as if these hundreds of strangers fluttering by were hunting her. Circling in on her. Her mind screamed that an attack was imminent, but from what angle? JD froze, her breathing short and rapid, beads of sweat breaking across her skin.

A tidal wave of memories rolled into her. The riot.

It wasn't much farther ahead where Noah's attention flicked back toward the sound of tearful choking in his wake. He could only speculate as he hauled JD out of the gathering and let her retreat into a still side passage where the festivities had become a dull drone. He took a knee in front of her huddled form, hopefully putting himself between her and... whatever had turned this lioness into a trembling lamb. After deducing that the fleet of hyper children dashing by were just that, he swiveled back around and felt her head fall against his chest.

Does a sign of trust always have to be such a surprise?

I cannot stress enough the importance of stock images. That includes taking pictures of yourself, fellow artists!

Noah's looking a little too shocked imo, but it's not ridiculously far off the mark. I really like this moment in the main story and just had to put it on canvas. Why yes, I do have an overdramatized, sappy song that inspired this scene - thanks for asking!: "Fix You" cover by Joseph William Morgan. The original Coldplay track I sing as a joke in the face of first-world problems literally all the time, and here I am attaching something I personally find emotional onto it. Bwuahahaha.

In arc one, the main cast is rendered homeless and unable to be remembered by other people, hence all the grunge. Somebody needs a haircut.

Sword and Shield go hand-in-hand. Living up to that metaphor, Noah and JD go through a tremendous amount of ice-breaking that only they can accomplish together. The first arc follows these two around almost exclusively and they are a DREAM to work with due to how outrageously removed they are in terms of personality and sense of purpose. I like to view these two through the lens of the masculine(offense) and feminine(defense). This dyad is designed to fill in the holes left vacant by the adjacent force (that is the dirtiest thing I've unintentionally ever said). What I understand is that both succeed and suffer differently but equally, and neither side is given too much to handle as long as the other is there to lend a hand.

You can even see it in their presentation, how one is clearly more haggard than the other. Obstacles of the flesh are what occupy Noah. He works things out by dealing and receiving physical stimuli, his logic being body-based. Whether he manages to break down a foe or if it be his own bones that wind up breaking, he's going to come out of that struggle with a better sense of himself. He can handle and derive meaning from pain. JD, concerned with matters of the heart and social cohesion, doesn't get any kind of profound feedback from something so corporeal as pain. As a result, pain doesn't seem intent on finding her (which is why her "powers" are outsourced to a beast companion - oppositely, Noah's powers are entirely martial). She is able to access realms of understanding Noah simply cannot. Not without her help. And vice-versa.

Aaaand I think I'm done talking about stuff that some smart guy probably already came up with 1000 years ago and expressed far more succinctly. In summary, I love these two. ;_;

Also someone needs to delete orange from my computer. This is ridiculous.
