Book Review
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Alex gets to study at Yale, on the condition that she work for Lethe, a society that watches over the 8 houses which boast rich and powerful alumni. When their occult activities get more sinister, Alex has to get to the bottom of it or risk New Haven’s peaceful existence and her own life.
My thoughts:
Loved this premise so much - dark academia and fantasy? This is such a good combination
Alex was such an interesting character and I loved how we gradually learnt more about her and her past and abilities. Really liked her relationship with Dawes, how it went from purely functional to fully having each other’s back and doing the absolute most to protect and support each other
Was much more mystery/thriller than I expected but really liked this aspect of the book too, especially with all the magic Alex uses to try and solve it
The flashbacks were so good - loved getting Darlington’s perspective on things and Alex in particular since we’re in her head so much, and seeing the puzzle unfold as we piece together how the past and present match up
The pages at the end of each chapter with information about each society were interesting but didn’t really help me get my head around the different ones and what they all did but I never seem to pay close enough attention to things like this anyway
I 100% knew what was up with Darlington (being cagey here to avoid spoilers) and the cliffhanger has me so excited for the next book! Will definitely be reading the rest of the series
4/5 stars

Nofilter Booklr Challenge: Nov 19 - Scribbled or Written in All photos are AS IS, no crops, no filters, no sharpening.
Other than my college research from eons ago, I really don’t write in my books. But I do like to flag parts. Generally, blue is for sad, pink for romantic or sweet moments, orange for funny, and green is for quotes or important exposition.

This is my copy of Salome by Oscar Wilde with illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. Published by Three Sirens Press in the early 1930’s!

Finished!
(And tossing this into the #nofilterbooklrchallege for a) being a library book and b) not coming out nearly as well as I’d wanted. Sigh.)

Pen marks are mine, pencil are from whoever owned the books before me because I don’t buy new books for class
Books pictured and marked up in for Science (or actually for English classes): The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and Kindred by Octavia Butler
Those notes may not seem like much, but in fact they led me to write my Best Essay Ever about Kindred, a book written by a literal genius.

prompt: a series with mismatched covers
I found the first Farseer book at a used book sale, adored it, and bought the next two from Thriftbooks. Sadly, they did not have any paperbacks of the matching editions, so I got the older, more cliched fantasy artwork style...also not a huge fan of the colors of either. But I’m looking forward to reading them anyway!

For @sonderreads #nofilterbooklr challenge.
Am I a smeyer fan? Absolutely not but I'm a complete and utter sucker for aliens falling in love.
This one actually works for book that's falling apart and book without a dust jacket. The jacket fell apart, both covers had to be duct taped on, and there's a good chunk of the pages are covered in coffee stains.

No Filter Challenge: a book that has been scribbled on or written in & a book with torn pages (Kind of! It’s really just the cover and back on this one.)
My copy of Hamlet with all my messy scribbles and sticky notes!

For @sonderreads‘ #nofilterbooklr challenge I’ve got some ugly covers. Now I don’t feel bad calling these covers ugly, because like the stories inside, they were meant to be weird and a bit grotesque. Paul Jennings was a master of the bizarre and a big part of my childhood, both his books and TV show based off them, Round the Twist.
@literatureandtrees Look what I ended up getting from the charity shop! I managed to find all these on the shelves in one afternoon. Thought you might appreciate them re: our conversation the other day :)
What’s your favourite weird or creepy book?

Nofilter Booklr Challenge: Nov 28 - Ex-Library Book All photos are AS IS, no crops, no filters, no sharpening.
Every now and then a former library book will sneak in and has to undergo “surgery” as my children like to call it to remove library-bindings, stickers, etc. This one had two stickers on the spine and one of them would just not come off, which is fine. I love the cover, so it will just face out.

Thank you so very much to  @sonderreads for issuing a book challenge for those of us with imperfect pictures and imperfect books!  I am mystified at those who are able to get lovely lighting on their photos, so it was nice to have a challenge where I can pull out a few books and snap away.  I am so photo inept that I only just discovered that there are filter options on my phone about 5 minutes ago as I was trying to rotate a shot.
This is a copy of “La Tulipe Noire” by Dumas that someone must have used in a French class--it is filled with translations and notes about how far to read for the next class.

Prompt: sort of just… all of them?
Mainly this book is getting its own post because I own two copies of it and one of them is vaguely new ish and not torn up and the other is this one, because this is the first copy i read (got permission from my teacher to keep it this time) and I loved it sooo much. It is falling apart, and the pages are way past yellowed and dogeared, and I don’t think the cover was ever whole, and it’s my favorite ever.
