STILL THE ONLY FIGURE IN SF/'80s HARDCORE TO HAVE SERVED IN THE 'NAM.

MINI-OVERVIEW: "Looking back, Falconi says there's plenty of factors in his life that influenced his work with FLIPPER, but there’s one that stands out above all: the Vietnam War.

“If I hadn’t gone to Vietnam, I probably wouldn’t have started FLIPPER,” Falconi says.

Falconi spent two years in Vietnam, from '67 to '69, and he came home with a new determination to live by his own rules. The army showed him how to focus on his goals and work to reach them.

After Falconi got out of the Army, he moved to San Francisco. It was 1970, and for the next decade, Falconi would dedicate his life to art -- mostly sculpture. He earned an MFA in art from UC Berkeley and almost completed a second master's degree in music from Mills College, where he experimented with early synthesizers and other noise-making instruments.

But it was John Gullak, guitarist for THE MUTANTS, who introduced Falconi to the electric guitar. The two were hanging out at Joe "Target" Rees's studios in San Francisco, where THE MUTANTS were being filmed, and Gullak let Falconi play around with his guitar and amp.

Apparently unpopular opinion

If music genres can parse down to the point where Japanese Industrial Noisepunk and Dreamcore Noise can exist as genres, movies can do the same thing too and cozy horror can exist as a concept.

You're not mad that people are using it to disregard white supremacy in Midsommar. You're just mad that this genre doesn't make sense to you. It's fine. Sometimes microgenres don't make sense to people who don't like the microgenre.

Go stare at the March 24, 2004 strip from Penny Arcade and stop obsessing over cozy horror. Jeez louise.

RECORDED LIVE AT CB's THANKSGIVING DAY 1983 -- A HEAVY NOISE PUNK GIG 40 YEARS AGO TODAY.

PIC(S) INFO: Recorded 40-years-ago on this day -- Spotlight on "Blow'n Chunks," the first live album by San Francisco-based punk rock band FLIPPER, released in 1984 by ROIR. The recordings originate from a show performed at NYC's CBGB on Thanksgiving Day of 1983.

MINI-OVERVIEW: "Here we go again! A wonderful treat for the twenty-seven-or-so Flipper fans out there: a (complete?) live CBGB's show performed and recorded on Thanksgiving Day, November '83. Standouts include definitive takes on "The Lights, The Sound, The Rhythm, The Noise" and the messy, amusing headbanger "In Life My Friend." Also, the previously unrecorded dirge "In Your Arms" makes this record a must-own for fans, containing the most chilling set of conflicted lyrics ever penned by the band:

"To use [drugs] is no vice / Look at my life / And I could never try to judge you / But I hate to play the fool.... When one pleasure excludes, dilutes, and pollutes all the others / I don't find that any fun / No, not any longer." And then there's Shatter's vocal work on "If I Can't Be Drunk." For those of you who've fallen hard for this band like I have, hindsight here is a sad bitch."
