yayy i finally did a quest on prumeval age!! i'm glad primeval age i encouraing me to make art thatbtakes more effort. the result is a lot more interesting than my usual fullbodies on transparent backgrounds!
i'm super happy i got some people to let me portray their characters as peater's family!
[Image description: A stylized digital drawing of two adult styracosaurus & two styracosaurus hatchlings on a beach. A little bit of pastel blue water can be seen encroaching on the shore. One adult styracosaurus is lying down by the shore and has pale green eyes & gray skin with darker gray freckles along her shoulders, back & on the upper portion of her head. She is looking down at her son who was just running over to her, a tiny brown styracosaurus with pale freckles all over & bright blue eyes. He is making eye contact with her and seems to be saying something with a smile. Not far away, her daughter, a tiny grayish greenish styracosaurus with pale blue-green eyes & dark freckles, is digging in the sand, looking down with a mildly amazed expression, small piles surrounding her. There are two seashells scattered among the beach, and farther back there are pale trees & green ferns. The other adult styracosaurus, who has silver freckles all over & light gray eyes looking over at the others, is eating a fern there. End of image description]
the adult styrscosaurus eating a fern in the background is maeve, an unrelated styracosaurus who was a member of peater's natal herd & would come to be like an auntie to him! she was designed by mechanic-drone & belongz to aegis.
the baby digging in the sand is gwenn, peater's clutchmate who is designed & owned by sollyraptor!
the other adult styracosaurus, pisces, is peater & gwenn's mother & is a primeval age npc of sortz who was designed by goblingrins.
the other baby is peater, who belongz to & was designed by me!

I mean yeah birds are dinosaurs, and have been dinosaurs long before we even knew about non-avian dinosaurs. But it's still surreal to think that dinosaurs are still around, and we've even domesticated some of them.

I wanna talk about this cool dinosaur fact I know. There is two basic divisions of dinosaurs, Saurischia and Ornithischia. And saurischia means "lizard hip" and ornithichia means "bird hip". But birds are actually saurischian dinosaurs, despite misleading name. It's just that birds and the dinosaurs in the ornithichian group all evolved separately but had the same features as an example of convergent evolution.

Death Stare- Dino Doodles
Tumblr media
I think crow-like beady eyes on dinosaurs are criminally underused.
Also hooded crows are underappreciated.
This was supposed to be a "scary feathered dinosaurs" piece but turned out cute.

People that say that feathered dinosaurs are "uncool" (or similar) interest me. What about feathers exactly makes dinosaurs less cool? What makes scales necessarily cooler than feathers? Because feathers are soft? I know that many scales are very smooth and wonderful to stroke. There are also some impressive predators out there that are feathered in the modern day (look at birds of prey) and many scaled animals that aren't exactly "cool" in the same sense do exist.
I am genuinely curious as to why, as somebody who personally thinks that feathered dinosaurs are really neat and interesting.

June's Fossil of the Month - Lesothosaurus (Lesothosaurus diagnosticus)
Family: Lesothosaurus family (Lesothosauridae)
Time Period: 199-190 Million Years Ago (Early Jurassic)
Living in what is now Lesotho and South Africa during the very early Jurassic, Lesothosaurus diagnosticus is a small species of non-avian dinosaur believed to be among the earliest ornithischians, an order of dinosaurs that, though only distantly related to birds, had bird-like hip joints, and who's later members included the ceratopsians (a group of typically large, quadrupedal dinosaurs with prominent facial horns and bony head crests, including Triceratops and its relatives), thyreophorans (heavily armoured quadrupeds, including Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus and relatives), pachycephalosaurs (relatively small, bipedal dinosaurs with extremely thick armoured skulls) and ornithopods (a hugely diverse group of 3-toed grazing herbivores, including the hadrosaurs or "duck-billed dinosaurs".) As the bones in its hindlimb were considerably longer and thicker than its short, inflexible forelimbs Lesothosaurus was likely bipedal in life, and like all known ornithischians it possessed a hard bony beak positioned in front of its teeth that likely aided it in grasping and tearing plants, although as its teeth were narrower and sharper than the broad grinding teeth seen in many modern herbivorous vertebrates (as well as most later herbivorous ornithischians,) it is possible that it was an omnivore, feeding both on plants and small animals. Large eye sockets and long hind-legs suggest that members of this species were fast-moving animals that relied on an acute sense of vision to detect predators and locate food, and the discovery of "bone beds" in which the remains of several individuals have been preserved in close proximity to one another suggest that they may have been social. Throughout much of the Jurassic the saurischians (the other major group of dinosaurs, containing the large, long-necked quadrupedal sauropods and diverse bipedal theropods) were considerably more widespread and diverse than the ornithischians, but by the end of Cretaceous the ornithischians had drastically diversified to the point of becoming among the most abundant large land animals - by studying Lesothosaurus and other early ornithischians, a better understanding of the group's rise to prominence (and the resulting impact on wider ecosystems, as plants developed defences against predation and other herbivores adapted to compete) can be gained.

[Image description: A stylized digital drawing of four styracosaurus by the sea. In the top right corner of the drawing, a dark gray adult styracosaurus with light gray eyes & darker markings similar to a diamondback rattlesnake is lying in shade provided by a palm tree and watching two juveniles, a grayish greenish one with pale blue-green eyes & dark brown freckles charging at her clutchmate who is brown with pale freckles all over and bright blue eyes. In the bottom right corner of the drawing, a blue-gray styracosaurus with darker gray freckles and pale green eyes is also watching them, only her head visible. There is also a fern & two bushes in the background, and everyone is smiling. End of image description]

Here's the second part of my Evolved Dinosaurs series, this one featuring Titanosaurs.  I originally wanted to draw more of them but it was pretty time consuming and I wanted to move on to the next part.  Hopefully the composition is passable. Anyway, the scene is a herd of Titanosaurs gathering at their breeding ground where two males are battling for center stage while females look on.  This particular species hails from South American where vertically all of the largest known Titanosaurs were discovered.  Given how efficient they were at getting big, after 65 million years I imagine they would have finally recached the biological limit of terrestrial size, reaching up to 50m in total length and raising their heads reaching to 20m.  A contributing factor the their size increase is the joining of the northern and southern American continents which greatly expanding their territory.  When it's spring in the northern hemisphere they migrate to North America then back to South America when spring returns there. They regulate their body temperature with their neck flaps similar to how elephants use their ears for the same function.  In males, these neck flaps can expand and exhibit bright colors to attract females as well as intimidate potential rivals.  When combating other males, they would often expand their neck flaps and risk injury as a show of confidence. As always comments and critiques are welcome.
Note: the males are distinguished from the females by the bright red patterns on their throats and darker back stripes.
